Paul Pierce's assessment of Celtics vs. Lakers fans feeds into stereotypes

53778140

It's been a long-held stereotype: East Coast sports fans are utterly obsessed with their teams to the nth degree. West Coast fans carry the reputation of being a little too casual, a little too apathetic and a little too distracted to seriously follow a sports team. That's why it was almost inevitable that a discussion like this would come up with the Lakers-Celtics Finals looming.

But it was surprising that Celtics forward Paul Pierce, an Inglewood native, would miss the mark entirely when comparing and contrasting the Lakers-Celtics fan base.

"Well, the fans at home cheer for us, the fans here don't," Pierce said. "I mean, I'm not at enough Laker games to really tell you how their fans are. I'm more biased really to tell you how their fans are. I'm more biased knowing that our fans are, I want to say, I think a little bit more knowledgeable to the game. I think a lot of celebrities come here to get out of the house to watch a game, to see the other celebrities. But then you've got your fans to mix with them. It's an interesting crowd, whereas I think our fans really come to watch the actual game."

When I first heard the comments, I really thought nothing of it, figuring he really just spoke to the reality that the atmosphere at Staples Center and TD Garden are inevitably different. A Lakers home game feels more like an event than a basketball game, with fans at times more fixated with celebrity sightings than what's going on in the game. A Celtics home game, on the other hand, entails nothing more than the crowd's electricity seemingly trickling onto the court.

Pierce muddied his point, however, when he suggested that Celtics fans are more knowledgeable than Lakers fans. In reality, both fan bases are equally devoted, but simply take different approaches.

I didn't grow up in the Boston area. I grew up in York, Pa., which is within close driving distance to Philadelphia and Washington, whose fans are also known for their devotion. I also didn't go to school in Boston. I attended Syracuse University in upstate New York where the student population's large contingent of people from Long Island, New Jersey and Boston often led me to joke I went to a school that featured the three most annoying accents in the world. My connection to Los Angeles is also fairly limited, since I've only lived here for the last 21 months, and I've often wondered how people out here who constantly complain about the rain would handle brutal winter temperatures.

I bring this up because I've seen and lived the cultural differences even though I'm both detached from Boston and Los Angeles. I grew up embracing the Northeast hustle and I embody the West Coast's laid-back attitude. I find the tendency of people on the East Coast to stress out all the time to be unnecessary, while I wonder why life out West moves at such a slow pace. That doesn't mean one area is superior to the other. It's just that it's different.

I've experienced sports back East and out West the same way. I've noticed how Syracuse basketball lighted up a town whose life largely centered around the school. I've witnessed several students who were Red Sox fans when they watched Boston end its 86-year curse in 2004, then rushed the quad in pure drunken and maddening excitement. And I've observed in downtown Los Angeles how the Lakers' 2009 NBA championship united a city during the parade.

You can argue that a Lakers' game atmosphere sometimes feels more like a night at the theater than an actual basketball game. But to say that that shows Lakers fans are less knowledgeable overlooks the fact that a) celebrities including Jack Nicholson and Flea know their hoops; b) Most of the Staples Center crowd doesn't properly represent the Lakers' fan base because of the insane ticket prices; and c) the crowd's laid-back attitude doesn't prevent it from reacting appropriately to what's happening on the court, especially during postseason. If Boston fans still want to suggest the Lakers only feature bandwagon supporters who come out of the woodwork when they win the championship, they should consider their own crowd. There were plenty of bandwagon Red Sox fans after their 2004 World Series championship.

Even though the atmosphere at Staples Center and TD Garden during the 2010 NBA Finals will carry different vibes, both crowds will be electric. After all, two teams steeped in tradition are bound to have devoted fans regardless of geography, showing that Pierce's comments about knowledgeable fans sounds far from knowledgeable.

Finally it's gameday. My honest opinion is these two teams are evenly matched, and more similar than most people realize. Objectively, I can see this going to 7 games either way. It'll all come down to which team can execute more consistently throughout the series.

NBA: Where the prophecies of Zoroaster happen, LOL.

From everything I've read, the Celtics really think they're winning game one. I hope the Lakers are ready for what's coming. And I hope the team has watched and re-watched game 6, 2008 a thousand times. I want game one to be the revenge game and then game two can just be a regular beatdown.

Wes

THATS IT! I SAID LAKERS IN 6 BUT, THE HECK WITH IT! I'M GOING OUT ON A LIMB AND SAYING LAKERS IN...4!SWEEEEEEEEEP.

"It's an interesting crowd, whereas I think our fans really come to watch the actual game and chant M-V-P for Kobe when he's in town"

^^Paula, I fixed your quote.

Sorry, but I don't see this going 7, and especially 7 either way.

Here are the possibilities:
WWLLWW
WLWLWW
WWLWW
WWWW

and the very rare WLLWLWW - the only way it goes 7 is if there's a split in the 1st 2

Refs, stay out of this!!!

This is between The Lakers and the celtics!

Mamba - i hope you're right about your prediction but Stern will never allow a sweep in this series. I see it going 6 or 7, and frankly it's a toss up for the winner. Some "non big name" will step up in a game or two and have a massive impact to win that game, and that will be the difference in the series. Such as a Nate Robinson/Rasheed Wallace or a Sasha/Luke.

AALLLLLL RIIIIGGGGHHHHTTTT!!!! IT'S GAAAAMMMMEEEEDDAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GAME 1 BABY!!! In about eleven hours from now...

I can't believe I have to suffer through 8 1/2 more hours of work, 1 hour on the train and 2 hours of just, well, whatever until TIP-OFF!!

For everyone else... Get those Car Flags UP, get your Purple & Gold Gear prepped and ready for tonight, bust out those Jerseys, New & Old alike, any Laker t-shirts you got from the store, swap-meet, corner vendor or from any of the parking lots near Staples... (Obviously I mean the "Official" gear, wink wink, LOL)... REPRESENT PEOPLE!!!!

I'm so BAD, I went and bought toilet paper with the Celtic's logo, along with Full Face Photos of all Celtics players & coaches, New & Old, imprinted on each sheet... Actually I got a year's supply. Order yours NOW at 1-866-CELTICS-SUCKS or online at www.bostonblows.com. And the BEST part is it's FREEEE!!!!

I actually somewhat agree with Paula Pierce's assessment of LA fans. I have been to several Laker games and a handful of other arenas around the country - and the Laker fans are the least vocal. I have no idea why, but i don't like it at all. I wish our fans were loud and really made a difference like in most other arenas. We have the least advantage of "home court".

LWLWLL

Lakers cannot play defense.. period!

Your reasoning is impecable Purple Heart. There's just two little things that's clouding my vision. 1. Remember back to 2008 when the Lakers lost, I don't know a bout you but I felt like hell for a very long time. Now imagine how the guys who actually played the game felt. Although they are trying to be politically correct, little hints are slipping ut that Phil, Kobe, Pau, Dfish & company want this one worst than any series they ever played. 2. Phil just may retire this year and he really hates Red Auerbach for all the snide comments he made about Phil only went to teams that were Championship ready. To win 11 would firmly seperate him from Red and so I think all playoff long they have been holding back for this series. This is my prediction
GAME 1. LAKERS BLOWOUT BY AT LEAST 16
GAME 2. LAKERS WIN BY AT LEAST 8
GAME 3. LAKERS WIN BY 2 POINTS
GAME 4 LAKERS WIN BY AT LEAST 30
That's my predictions and I'm sticking with them!

@ Purpleheart-

Don't worry about the fans at the Game... The LAKER Fans WILL REPRESENT over on Figueroa and at the Coliseum in about 2 weeks from now... and trust me, WE WILL BE LLLLOOUUUDDDD!!!!!

Seriously people...let's consider the source of this garbage. Pierce also said he was the best player in the world. Come on now. I will agree that Boston fans are more neurotically faithful to their home teams...HOWEVER, only when they're winning and they're not very knowledgeable about the game either. Their faithfulness is to their "home" team simply because they are, not because they know anything about the game.

What a crazy day. It must be championship week, day one.

My main man, Gary Colman, gets left to die on the kitchen floor by a wife who "gags" at the sight of blood. That must be the ultimate tragedy in his life. And the man hunt is on for the girl killer in Chile...

But on a good note, we have home court in these finals, and I think that's big. Big if we can take the first two games. We need the fists two games...

I'm sorry Princess but on this one I must agree with Paula.
Have you ever seen her in a game of WheelChair Basketball?
The girl can get down and her crossover wheelie, man she breaks some spokes on the other guys.
Mamba24

Captain - ahem - Jack... I haven't seen any basketball savant who thinks that the Cs can take 4 out of 6 and -- you are saying -- 3 out of 4 on LA's home court? Get serious. Even if the Cs have played well away from home--LA hasn't lost yet in the playoffs at Staples. It is inconceivable that in such a closely matched series they would lose 3 of 4.

Just not within the realm of possibility.

You all in Boston really need to worry about your own home court, that is where you're going to lose the series.

It'll go 6, but Lakers way. Unless it goes 5. That scenario would be: WLWWW or LWWWW or WWLWW or WWWLW

There is at least one more permutation, but you get the basic idea, right? Your aging Cs are all tweaked backs, buckling knees, and pissed off, frustrated Tee'd up and tossed-outta-the-arena toast.

A toast then: to you, green toast.

Refs, stay out of this!!!

The better team is going to win, as a die-hard Lakers fan, I certainly root for my team. I read some of the postings by Celts fans; they were either wishful thinking or simple minded logic based on the past wins the Celts had. When the Magic beat their team in games 4 and 5 I did not see too many of their postings. Truth is nobody knows who is going to win; the only things that I am scare of the Celts are Pierce's wheelchair and miracle...What a joke!!!!

It's THURSDAY!

WAHAHAHHAAHHAA, OH MY! ROFLMFAO!!!

I lost all respect for any sort of true Celtic fan when they chanted MVP for Kobe. When they're team stunk, they cut and run. The one caveat is that they stunk for so long, they had to jump off.

At some point, Jack and Rose had to jump off the Titanic.

But I'm not offended by what Paul Pierce has to say. They've paid him millions to say such things. He's a Bostonian. So what....big city to small city is easy.

Well, I disagree with Paul Pierce. As you can tell I am not a Kobe, Pau, and Phil Jackson's fan but I respect Laker fans. They have stuck with Kobe in the thick and thin. As far as celebrities watching the game it only benefits Lakers like Odom taking less money and Phil sticking around for so long. Lakers represent the NBA Show. FOX played in LA just for his entertainment career and I am sure you will find more examples.

And If Jack Nicholson and other celebrities were not part of the mix or I should rephrase that if celebrities were not leading the cheer Lakers following would not be where it is. Hard core fans of Basketball will watch no matter what but the casual fans of basketball becoming hard core fans of Lakers (not basketball) can only happen to this degree only in LA. When people who are nuts about Tom Cruise see Tom at Staples they automatically get nuts about Lakers also.

On top of that these celebrities are actual fans also and they just don't look like they are acting. Se maybe acting but I don't think Celebrity fans like Jack are faking it and he does not only cheer he actually makes Jerry Buss accountable to get better players and better coaches. They also help them recruit and give other insight because I am sure through media and behind the scenes Jack dictates many Laker decisions. I believe no NBA team can ever get this kind of media attention and Fans’ Attention.

Lakers are in a league of their own in this kind of Celebrity and Fan Following.

Tough guys? Marquis Daniels got knocked out by running into someone's chest! LOL...

Though, his nickname was 'the Polish Hammer'..he shoulda dodged that chest!

NBA OFFICALS BEWARE! Please be aware that in my opinion the league is poised for a class action suit if you continue to make rules and not enforce them , then not enforce the equally. . How can you ignore the recent official corruption record and go on with business as usual. For years the NBA has lost many fans because the officiating make the games look totally FIXED. It gets worst every year. The Officials pick the winners in every game in the first two quarters with their choice of who they decide to call fouls on, thus we are not entertained. The Celtic and Garnett thing really pisses me off. If you look at the video, he throws TWO punches right in front of the referee. And all he got was an offensive foul! When you apply the rules so haphazardly and unfairly, you diminish the entire NBA product BRAND. I think all fans agree - we just want the games to be called fairly, equally. Can't let one side get away with everything and call touch fouls on the other team.

Kevin Garnett is a dirty player. The video of him punching Howard in the arms, TWICE, during game 6th last week is unbelievable! How could the officials miss that call? It’s a terrible call and the NBA should review the tape and take appropriate actions otherwise the NBA would be viewed as bias. He should be suspense of his action.

The league must clean up its act.

Pierce sux.

Posted by: Magia32 | June 03, 2010 at 07:45 AM

Magia32-

Ill answer your question ... None. When have I ever said they have?

When have I said they chased Lions and Tigers and fought a Bear with there hands or wrestled a great white shark?

The indelible sound in my mind when it comes to Lakers homecourt fans is the sound of cheering.

In 1991.

For Michael Jordan.

When he was in the process of closing out Magic's Lakers.

That made me sick. Scottie Pippen said sometime after that, the difference between the Chicago Stadium crowd and the Forum crowd was that the Bulls fans helped get their team into the game, where the Lakers had to help their *fans* get into the game.

I think MM is right. I've only watched on TV, but over the years I've noticed a cavalier (no pun intended) attitude from many LA fans courtside and in the lower bowl. Largely because celebs go for the event, and some are planted there to promote projects for the networks or a movie. But the TV doesn't show the salt-of-the-earth LA fans who are probably screaming and clapping and yelling. However, in other arenas, the lower bowl and courtside are filled with the rank-and-file fans who go crazy, giving the impression that LA's Home Court Advantage isn't as strong.

Plus, the visitors *always* love playing in LA. If you're in Vancouver, you're playing in front of the law firm partner, the owner of the contracting company, the surgeon. Visit Staples and you're putting on a show for Jack, Denzel, Dyan, Flea, Cruise, et al. How many of us would love to give the stars a show in that circumstance?

Boston is no different.

But, with family roots in LA, I know Angelenos love their Lakers as much as Beantown loves their C's. I know they've lived and died with the Lakers for generations. They know the game as well as anyone. It shows from cats like Rick Friedman, Jon. K, mamba24, LTLF, wesjoenixon and a ton of others here.

And after the embarrassment that was the 2008 Finals, I know EVERYBODY'S going to be ready.

As will I.

All Vegas Sports books are predicting Lakers over celtics.

I'm always in trouble. But this is all on the up and up Mamba..
He wants the young men to play this out.
If one of them wants to quit, or fake an injury, or pound forearms,
He will not intervene.

Maybe you guys are right that Celtics will break apart and give in 5 or 6 games. Or maybe 4.

My fear is not that Celtics cannot stop Lakers but Celtics like in overtime game against Tragic cannot score at all. They get so cold that they make New England winter feel like Miami. And I am sure in that cold span Kobe and Lakers will knock down shots to bury the Celtics.

This is what I thought in 04 and 08 when Lakers played Pistons and Celtics. Maybe in 04 the Kobe-Shaq feud cost you the championship. Maybe in 08 not having Bynum & Artest cost you the championship. But your boy Kobe did not deliver either and for some reason he did not want to take it to the rack like Michael did when nothing worked. Yes it was 3 against 1 but Kobe chose to jack up 3's and let Celtics romp the Lakers. I am not sure why he does not break the D and try to slam in Trafic or do a layup. Maybe he is worried his 150 mil body is not worth sactificing or he is just not Jordan's caliber to take it on his own and sacrifice his body. Or maybe he has smaller hands like Phillup has said. Or maybe he thinks his jumpers are all that and will finish other teams. Whatever it is he is just not the closer that MJ was.

If Celtics can play half the D they played on him last time and keep all Lakers in check then Celtics can be in the series.

And I just don't see Pau, Bynum, and Odom dictate the Paint. And so it rests on Kobe to break the D and go to the Paint for the title.

MM,

What's the big deal? If the Wheelchair is referring to the Staples Center crowd, then he is right, but those fans at Staples aren't representative of the Lakers' real fan base. Next thread please.

Kinda glad it irked you enough to get serious though. Sorry for the triple post by the way.

I'll state this:

We played the same exact Orlando Magic team (except for a less tough Vince Carter) and nobody got 'knocked-out' by anyone (truly the most accurate measure of basketball prowess, Celtic boys).

Our 'soft' player handled Howard's elbows just fine.

....oh and we didn't have Ron 'I take on Stadiums' Artest.

WE ARE SWEEPING THE CELTICS! WE ARE, WE ARE WE ARE! And I'm going to hold my breath until we do!
Mamba24

Release our new Kraken, Artest! It's not a payback time, in my opinion, but it's extermination time! Let's knock the Celtics back 25 years like we did to them in 1987!!!

Go Lakers!
In Kobe, I Trust!

I think Paul was talking more about the fans at the Staples Center than Laker fans in general. I'm also sure you're right, ticket prices keep the people who REALLY care away (which is a shame, by the way). On that point Pierce is correct. Oh, they cheer when the game gets tight, they'll scream for a great Kobe shot, but I'd bet most of the people in the stands out there couldn't tell you the difference between a pick and a screen. The LA fans at home? Different story. Just from reading comments in the Times you can see they love their team and know the game. And let me tell you, after trolling around the Cleveland and Orlando newspaper sites for a few weeks, this place is a breath of fresh air. I said in an earlier post it's nice to be back in the civilized basketball world after wallowing around those round-ball trailer parks.
Two great teams whose fans hate each other. Does it get any better than this?

I always tell the truth. Even when I lie. Say 'ello to my little friend! Pauly the Wheelchair Pierce. Hey Tony Montana put this piece of ^%# in wheelchair for good.

Mark G:

Jou gotta problem with sweepin? Get jour little a.. in gear and start sweepin'. Don't make me send Tony Montana to visit jou.

WE ARE SWEEPING THE CELTICS! WE ARE, WE ARE WE ARE! And I'm going to hold my breath until we do!
Mamba24

All right, all right, I give! Just don't hold your breath Larry.

JUSTA! WHERE are you? IT'S GAME DAY, did you know that?

And where is Ouchhhhhh? I just got to the point where I could actually stand the guy, and he goes and disappears.

Celtics are Ugly, have Glass Jaws, and are Bleeders, and those are their good points. Ditto for their fans.

Paul Pierce declared himself as the best player in the world when:
a). He lost big at craps in Las Vegas;
b). He got drunk after an extended celebration of '08 Championship;
c). A Porn star at Riviera refused to sleep with him;
d). All of the above

Posted by: Edwin Gueco | June 03, 2010 at 08:05 AM

There is nothing wrong playing craps mate. Drunk? what do you expect from him.. sip Cafe latte in Melrose?

Dude ripped the Lakers that year and I am sure the chick thought her merchandise would be worthless after Pierce is done.. Probably picked up the better looking and less used starlet after that..

After tonights game .. well during the game I am going to have me some rum.. Lakers loose I will drink in celeberation and if you win I will drink in sorrow... I got it all planned...

--------------------------------------------------

By the way ... all of you who are getting all wet because of Vegas Line.. Celtics have beaten that line both time against Cavs and Tragic..

You have better odds winning craps than betting on your Lakers!

GM Cru !!!!!!! GAMEDAY !!!! Boston SMACKDOWN TIME !!!

I wanna give a Man-Hug to MM... EXCELLENT summary and explanation for those east and west coasters thats never lived in the others territory.. I also wanna add, most of us have seen "celebrities" in day to day life out here so unless you're a tourist, locals out here really dont do the whole " omg theres lindsay lohan" I dont wanna sound like a snob, but you can go out and mingle with "celebrities" if thats your thang ... Bostonians FEEL they're more knowledgable because they tend to "block" things and revert back to the Golden Era. Sure, they'll tell ya ALL about the DOMINANT Celtics.. they leave out the part that this was 1957 to 1969 !!!!! For such knowledgable, devouted Fans.. I find it oddly amusing, the NBA and Fans of the NBA, didnt hear a PEEP from them 1987 until 2008 !!!!!! Hmmmmmm no chest pounding for over 20 years ???? How can that be ? Oh Yeah.. because you guys were SCRUBS for the last couple of DECADES, thats WHY !!!! So next time you wanna venture away from your sorry annoying blog community and hang out here, make sure you dont wander in thinking Laker fans dont realize "our" down years were all of 10 ( 89-99 ) and you guys sucked for ummmmm, quite a bit longer !!! lol Since I've been alive, I've watch the 2 teams personally compete for a Championship 4 times, both teams winning twice.. I also noticed, for all the rah rah rah chest pounding, Boston HASNT repeated as Champs... EVER in my lifetime... NOT ONCE !!!! That cracked me up so I googled the team and sure enough.. the last time the Celtics had a back to back, let alone a 3peat was in the 60's !!!!!!! LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOO Ummmm Im no Math whiz. but we're talking about 4 decades !!!!!! over 40 years of ummmmmmm mediocrity !!!! Buwahahahahahahah Basically, Bostons BEST years took place long before some of us were even born, when the NBA consisted of what?? 16-17 teams total?? YaY !!! We DOMINATED back then.. That makes us the BEST Team for LIFE !!! Ummmmmmm NO.. Tonight is the night that begans to disprove that retarded mentality...

Tonight.. game 1 - Shock and Awe Lakers win by at least 10 !

Def, release Artest on the Wheelchair.

I know not from which rock you've been living under, but to make the above statements prove that you obviously don't know jack (no pun intended) about Kobe. And from this point on, we CAN'T take ANYTHING you say seriously ANYMORE. Not that we did before.

By the way, is your last name Hoff?.. Just askin'.

I would really buy into this Ron Artest is a tough guy if I didnt see him RUNNING away from Ben Wallace!

The fact that the Lakers have priced out most of their fan base is telling. Before too long, all their fans will only be the lame celebrities.
