Mitch did a good job with this draft. When you draft that low, you pick by players available, not by need. Actually you do that anyway (remember Sam Bowie vs. Michael Jordan).

You also look at upside. These guys have attitude risk, but they have NBA skills. If you draft good attitude / questionable skills there is almost no chance they ever become productive NBA players. Good skills / questionable skills is a better bet.

That said, expectations of productivity next year need to be realistic. Trevor Ariza took 3 stops and was in his 5th year when he had those great playoffs last year for the Lakers.

And people keep talking about Ariza as a 3 point threat. Yeah, he shot 48% in the 2009 playoffs. But that was a fluke. He is a 32% lifetime on threes in the regular season - and the last 3 years was 33%/32%/33%.

So let's be realistic in expectations on Ebanks as an immediate contributor and a 3 point shooter. We will be lucky if he a) makes the cut and b) plays decent D in limited minutes. I certainly hope he does and think he can.

Caracter is a long shot.

I'm starting to get super irritated by all this NBA trade craziness that's been going down the past few years. The Bulls had as serious a shot at getting Kobe Bryant in his prime for their team as any team, and instead of diving head first into that opportunity, they refused to include Deng in any deal for Kobe, and before your knew it the season started, Bynum dominated and the Lakers were on their way to 3 consecutive finals.

Now I'm hearing that the Nets will not consider trading Brook Lopez for Chris Paul. Huh? Let me laugh a bit here. Hheheheh. OK, I feel better. That's so stupid. You refuse to trade an AVERAGE big man (sorry guys, he's within an arms length of average) for Chris Effen Paul?

That's funny.

And the lakers went front court, size, specific skills for their draftees. Foxsports calls Devin Ebanks one of the steals of the draft:

Devin Ebanks F 6-9 215 West Virginia
(from MEM)
Prospect Rank: 21

The NBA champs still have holes to fill, and get a steal at 43 with a legit first-round talent in Ebanks. He's a top-notch athlete and a well-rounded basketball player.

Wes

The more I think about it the more I like Raja Bell, if he's healthy. He's a vet who is ready to sacrifice himself for a team/title. He adds to the Lakers defensive mindset and toughness. He can hit the 3 and spread the defense. He can play either guard spot adequately. A real Rick Fox/Ron Harper type pick up. And Kobe wants him.

Ad Fish, Shannon and Sasha and the Lakers have a pretty deep gurad corps. They'll need a quick guard, maybe Farmar resigns or Critt looks good or they sign a free agent.

I know a lot of teams have quick PGs that give the Lakers fits. But the fact is that Lakers BEAT all those teams. The Lakers have a lot of playmakers (Kobe/Pau/Odom to name 3). They don't need a guy who needs the ball in his hands a lot to be effective (like a Nash or Parker or Paul).

All through the playoffs opposing coaches said the Lakers wore them down with their .... LENGTH. Say that word over and over to yourself. LENGTH. That is the formula for these Back to Back Champs.

Other teams are smaller and quicker. That's OK. We are long and talented. We play tough D. We have Kobe. And Pau. And we win titles.

This is not the time to change direction. Build on the strength. and live by length.

Tom Daniels,

you wrote: This is not the time to change direction. Build on the strength. and live by length.

my response: does length = height to you?

I ask because Bosh has the same wingspan as Bynum, but he's shorter
than Bynum.

Just curious.

btw, I don't mind bell or miller as additions to the lakers.

Hop aboard and show PJ some love....

Why are some of you people so high on Bosh?? He was the first option on a CRAPPY Toronto team. His one on one defence is horrible, most of his blocks come one weak side help situations, and the most important part, aren't most of you people always complaining about physicality? When was the last time you saw Bosh play in the post?? Everytime I've seen him play he jacking up 20 footers.

I think Mitch did an awesome job with his picks and the talent available to him, and thats what the draft is about. You don't waste a pick on sub par talent because you need a guard. If you need a gaurd but can pick up a 3 thats a better player, you pick the better player.

Now lets get this little fantasy out of the way. If the Lakers pick up Raja Bell he will not I repeat NOT be starting along side Kobe, and here is why?

Raja plays the 2 (remember "Kobe stopper" and the whole deal)
not to mention that he has no idea how to run the triangle. As much as some of you hate Fish, unless some one totally wows the Lakers coaching staff he will be starting next year if he resigns.

Bosh has done diddly squat for his team and is a softy cut in RuPaul's image. If Pau is labeled as soft then Bosh is a jello......

Bosh should stick with self promotional video commercials as a stuntdouble for RuPaul..

lakers just need to focus on D!!!!

The Infamous El Guapo,

you wrote: Why are some of you people so high on Bosh?? He was the first option on a CRAPPY Toronto team. my response: I'm high on Bosh because he's actually a *BETTER* player
than Bynum! Use *WHATEVER* metric you like and he's a *BETTER*
player than Bynum! He's more athletic than Bynum. He's wingspan is the
same as Bynum's. He's a better shooter than Bynum. He's quicker than Bynum.

Right now we have the rotation of Bynum/Gasol at C & Gasol/Odom at PF.
If you get Bosh, you have the rotation of Gasol/Bosh at C & Bosh/Odom/Pau
at PF. You would be getting a 4-time NBA all star for an oft injured C whose
rebounds & assists are decreasing. Bynum has wide hips and he's knock-kneed
he'll be fighting injuries for the rest of his life. [ my opinion ]He will be
wearing a knee brace for the rest of his career.

Why are *YOU* committed to a C who has been injured 3 of the last 3 years?
Why are *YOU* committed to a C who can't average a double-double?
Why are *YOU* committed to a C who doesn't pass? I posted his stats over
the last 3 years and compared them to Odom's. Why is a 7' center being
out rebounded by a 6'10 PF?

Definitely want PJ back. I mean, that would be a huge blow...

I'd like PJ to stay as long as Kobe does... or at least another 3 seasons and when he does leave, I'd like him to sort of do a halfway with Brian Shaw so it's a smooth transition (assuming Kobe is still around)... once Kobe leaves, then the team is likely to get blown up unless there's enough young pieces to make a run.

I mentioned DURING the series that Lamar was our biggest chip.

Yeah, he's a good player and very talented... but Dr Buss (especially) knows one thing, trade value starts going down as a player turns the 30 years old corner... Lamar will not be more valuable than he is now. He's also very inconsistent and he also makes more money than he's worth (although not too much more than he's worth)....

Add it up in THIS free agent market (which is a huge FA market) and couple it with Lakers financial troubles and it starts looking super likely that Lamar gets traded.

Face it, of all the guys under contract that ARE trade-able, which one(s) would you be most willing to actually pull the trigger on???? Lamar tops the list.

I find it somewhat amusing that everyone here is clamoring for a PG when there's not really any decent ones on the market at a price we can afford and yet you have a very capable PG with 2 rings, 3 finals appearances, a big playoff game under his belt... all available on the cheap.

And you guys actually WANT him to walk. LOL.

Whatever.

Pleased with the draft pick. Ariza was a 2nd rounder, but was more athletic than this guy... and what made Ariza was his eye for offense (he sees what the offense is doing while playing D) and his willingness to work hard on his shot once he got here (his shot was BROKE before his foot broke.... then Kobe gave him a shooting regimen and the rest is history)

I don't see Farmar coming back. I think its 50-50 that Brown returns. I have to believe Fish will be back. I'm hoping Buss opens the purse enough to get one decent free agent guard (Blake, Miller, Korver, Watson). I think Hinrich would have been a great fit if his salary was lower. I've never been that excited about JCritt though he does have some experience in the system.
The most important piece we need is Phil Jackson. I will be really disappointed if Phil retires and BShaw goes to Cleveland.

Kobe the coolest man alive AND quite a dweeb...

COOL factors:
Not flinching when moron dork Barnes faked throwing the ball in his face.
Ignoring un-funny annoyance Chris Rock.

UNCOOL factor: What the heck is up with the pseudo "Beat it" Michael Jackson style clothes he's been wearing on Lopez and especially on Kimmel? I mean, zippers and shoulder pads??? You thought the all white spread was goofy? Damn these talkshow threads are just nasty in the worst sence of the word.

I still have a mancrush on him though...

It looks to me like Chicago will be the defacto favorite next season. They're doing their best to pull a Celtics and go from okay to awesome in one off season (of course, celts went from terrible to great via GM on the inside + owner sabotaging his team)

Look:
Tom Thibodeau - the coach behind the coach
LBJ
Bosh or other high producing player
+
D Rose
Joakim Noah

This will be a sick team if it gets done, and I don't see how it doesn't. Where else is LBJ going to go??

I have a hard time seeing the Lakers getting STRONGER in the off season right now - financial bootstraps. If money weren't an issue, then well... I guess we'd be the Yankees

And also

Cannot afford to lose Kurt Rambis and Brian Shaw in back to back off seasons while PJ is ailing.

I don't want Byron Scott, sorry. I love him, but no. Not for THIS team. Maybe after Kobe retires.

wuttup el guapooooooo!

Yeah - I don't get the whole Bosh thing either. Beats the crap outta me why people think the Lakers should break up a championship winning team. But hey - to each his own... Gotta have something to talk about right? LOL!

So - i lost your email address..... (and NO i don't think you're an axe murderer lol!)

Where you been? I know you said you were having some issues to deal with - I really hope all's well....

GO LAKERS!!

Let's get real, folks. Length is not what won us the championship. It's the skill of our bigs that set us apart. Did we have that much more length than Phoenix or Boston? No.

And just say no to Bosh, yes to LBJ.

Tim,

I'm not so sure that projected Bulls team beats the Lakers as is.

LBJ, we got Kobe.
Bosh, we got Gasol.
Noah, we got Bynum.
They got us beat at PG, but we have an improved Ron and a very clutch playoff Fish and possibly retain Odom.
Thibideo - Lakers beat him this year with D.
The only position they have a better player is PG and until LBJ shows some playoff skills and heart I'd still pick the Lakers to beat them in a series.

If Lakers didn't change a thing they still be the favorite next year.

Sorry Andy L - you are SO wrong.

Kobe looks HOT.

George Lopez is a shout-talker. It's annoying. The emotional range of his discourse is utterly truncated.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

jon k - so..... welcome back to cali!

I'll miss your insider info on all things princess, BUT it may all be moot anyways if/when she leaves.

However - you need to get started on your memoirs asap! I want to hear the REAL deal on what went down during your exile.

I have to give props to Bynum for one more year because the Lakers won the Championship. You have to reward an achieving child despite you worry his maturity. Like the opportunities given to Farmar extend it to Bynum and surround them with capable bench. I don't care if Shannon opts out, tho' he is on a losing end if he does because the opportunities are here. Fisher is aging, Sasha is on his last leg of his contract, he is familiar with the Lakers so why bolt out for few millions. Secure the future on long term not on a short term lure. Farmar wants to play more, let him go to where his dream will lead him.

Celtics are disintegrating faster than the Gulf Coast. Coach is leaving, GM might go to Suns, K. Perkins + their 1st dr.pick are being offered like bargains, Paula Pierce would opt out and chase long term green bucks than being the franchise of the leprechauns. As we have forecasted during the playoffs, it will take another 5 years, maybe ten or two decadeds before the Celtics get their coveted dream of going to the Finals. How sweet, perhaps that may be the underlying reasons why 131, Reds and Sgt. Jack are no longer posting. They are contemplating on Cape Cod what the season could have been if only......?????? LMAO!

Now I'm hearing that the Nets will not consider trading Brook Lopez for Chris Paul.

...I guess they feel their PG will suffice. But dude, seriously? Passing up CP3? Ridiculously stupid.

Lopez and Kimmel are the equivalent of ambulance chasers of Night Shows. They book on a bandwagon of winners, I'm sure they will invite Landon Donovan too after the World Cup. If Lakers did not win last week, will they get such attention? Perhaps, mockery and blame game on Kobe. America always loved the winners although the truth of the matter, competition never ends and losers learned a lot of teachable lessons, so much so that the winners of today were formerly the losers of yesterday.

I don't like the idea of any team being so potent, but that's IF they mesh. That's IF there's a coach that can coach them effectively. You might have a great team like ours and if you can't coach them well, then you might be good, but not great.

That's what worries me about losing Phil. If he retires then we stand the chance of getting a good coach, but perhaps not one that can coach us to another championship. That worries me.

justanothermambafan,

you wrote: Yeah - I don't get the whole Bosh thing either. Beats the crap outta me why people think the Lakers should break up a championship winning team. But hey - to each his own... Gotta have something to talk about right? LOL!

my response: didn't you also advocate trading LO ? if you really don't
advocate breaking up the team then you want the Lakers to resign Farmar,
Mbenga & Powell?

just curious, because you *KNOW* hobbits are curious creatures.

hobbit - i have NEVER advocated trading Lamar. NEVER. You've got me mixed up with someone else. I LOVE LAMAR. I am (or at least should be) the owner of the LAMAR = LAKER FOR LIFE bandwagon.

As far as breaking up the team goes, I'd prefer not to lose anyone, but ESPECIALLY NOT the core group of guys. If Jordy wants to go, then fine. I want to keep Sasha and Shannon. If Powell or Mbenga aren't staying, then that's a bit of a problem since we need another large body to compensate a little for injuries / foul trouble. If Fish isn't staying we've got a BIG problem. If Phil leaves we've got a HUGE problem. That's what I think...

I understand hobbits are curious - hope I've satisfied you for a little while!

Edwin Gueco:

And whats wrong with inviting winners to the show, arn't they talk show hosts looking to drum up business? Don't you love the winners? Obviously, you took part in the parade to celebrate the winners? And did you feel bad about the Celtics? Did you want the talk show hosts to invite the losers?

You have to reward an achieving child despite you worry his maturity.

Despite worrying about Bynum's maturity? He is only 22 and pray tell what were you doing at the age of 22, were you in world's biggest spot light, constantly under scrutiny, having to endure two major setbacks in a profession where competition is fierce. So you sit in your little office and post without an iota worth of consideration for others. Just like you sit there and suggest how Dr. Buss should spend his money. Just because there is freedom of speech does not warrant a nonsensical post.

Art - FL Laker Fan,

you wrote: Noah, we got Bynum

my response: umm ... Why is Bynum better than Noah?

No. I am not trying to start a fight/long discussion. I'm asking if you
have any evidence to support the claim. We *know* that Noah outplayed
Bynum in December.

fyi,

http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/n/noahjo01.html
http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bynuman01.html

Noah averaged .5 more blocks, 4.9 more rebounds, 1.5 more assists
Bynum averaged 2.2 more points.

hobbitmage,

Lol.
Been there, done that.
No thanks.

Not even the Lakers could beat a healthy team that includes James, Rose, Bosh, and Noah. Chicago would probably win 75 games in the regular season alone. It would also be extremely tough for the Lakers to get past Orlando if (as some rumors are suggesting) the Magic get Chris Paul. So I’m afraid it’s time for a pre-emptive strike. Either offer Bynum for Chris Paul (certainly a better opportunity – both salary-wise and talent-wise – for New Orleans than swapping for Carter and Nelson) – or, if Kobe and LeBron can be convinced to share the spotlight – Bynum and Artest (or Odom) in a sign-and-trade for LeBron. LeBron gets his max. money – and Cleveland gets the pieces to stay competitive in the East.

hobbitmage,

Here's the thing.

You keep saying there are lies, damn lies and stats, yet you keep using stats to try and validate you points.

Stats are just so misleading because there are so many variables.

Noah/Bosh got those stats playing on different teams in different systems with different teammates.

They played more games against eastern conference opponents than Bynum did which may have effected the stats.

Having those players play on the Lakers with Pau and Kobe in a new and different system in no way proves they will perform the same or have similar stats.

There is just no way to accurately compare these guys via stats unless they all played for the same team, with the same teammates against the same opponents.

To conduct any scientific study and use stats for comparative purposes all the variables need to be the same.

There is no way to do that in this case.

I understand the fun of stats in sports and they do give an overview of the performance of an athlete but using those as a scientific basis of fact to prove one is better than another is inaccurate.

You prefer Noah/Bosh, I prefer Bynum.
You say tomato, I say tomoto, or whatever.

ey hobbit, art is right....

who was Noah anyway??? why would we get rid of potential good talet for a mediocre one???

cmon guys, NO Lebuffon James, Noah, Bosh (maybe), cp3,

keep our starters, add Tmac to our forward line up and get another PG or train Shannon to be a better PG... thats all and with that roster i smell a 4 peat!!!!

Edwin Gueco:

And how is that different from any other late night talk show? That sure was a strange hater comment.

hobbitmage,

>>>Noah averaged .5 more blocks, 4.9 more rebounds, 1.5 more assists
>>>Bynum averaged 2.2 more points.

Context is important here. Noah wasn't competing with another 7 footer for rebounds. The Lakers other two front court players are excellent rebounders. By comparison, Taj Gibson & Luol Deng aren't giving Noah much competition.

Also, Bynum can post up. You can dump the ball to him in the post and he's pretty effective. Most of Noah's points come on fast breaks or putbacks.

Bynum is better than Noah, but not by much.

>>>Not even the Lakers could beat a healthy team that includes James, Rose,
>>>Bosh, and Noah

Mike T, is that you?

It would depend on the coaches of the respective teams. If Phil is coaching the current Lakers vs that squad, Lakers win. If Phil is coaching the Bulls with that roster and Mike Dunleavy is coaching the Lakers, then the Bulls win.

Tim-4-Show,

>>>It looks to me like Chicago will be the defacto favorite next season.

On paper. But that doesn't always play out in real life.

>>>Tom Thibodeau - the coach behind the coach

That doesn't always play out either. When Byron Scott took New Jersey to the finals in 2002 and 2003, the hype was that it was all Lawrence Frank and BScott had nothing to do with it. So they dumped Scott, Frank took over, and with essentially the same team, they never even made it back to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Yes, Thibodeau is presumably responsible for Boston's defense. But will his offense be effective? Will he be able to manage several big egos (Joakim Noah's got about as big an ego as LeBron)? Will he keep them all motivated without getting on their nerves?

Won't know until we know.

It sure does sound like LeBron and Bosh are both going there though.

>>>keep our starters, add Tmac to our forward line up

WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA...

Hold on there, buckaroo.

Why would you want a corpse like T-Mac on the Lakers? Seriously, that guy is more done than burnt toast. If anything, the Lakers need an upgrade at PG or deep backup front court (i.e. better than MBenga or Powell in case of injuries to any of the Lakers top 3 front court players). They definitely don't need a washed up 3.

Why are people so worried about Rose + James being a great combination??

I dont think it will be as successful as even CP3 + David West or Boozer + Williams!!

Lebron James needs to have the ball in his hands most of times, and he controls the offense.. In a team like Cavaliers, this worked good for them, because their PGs were good 3-pt shooters as well (Mo Williams, Gibson). So, even when Lebron has the ball and ends up effectively as the PG, Mo and Gibson can run around, spot up and shoot.

This might not work with Chicago Bulls. Derrick Rose is a player who needs the ball, and is a "pure" PG. He does not have a mid-range J and is not a 3-pt shooter. Mostly, he can only finish at the rim. He is good at assists, and steals etc.. So, when Lebron James is doing the ball-handling, what on earth will Rose do?? My guess is he wont have anything left to do other than stand and ball-watch.. The defense can keep him on the perimeter, and he will be totally ineffective. Also, James doe not have a strong post-play (unlike Duncan, Malone, Booze), so that P&R stuff also might not work.

In a team where someone else is handling the ball, Rose has nothing to perform there!!

So, Rose + James looks good on paper, not sure how ugly would it look on the court.

Championships are not won by mere loyalty, glamour or finesse. ou don't get it on a silver platter. Teams rebuild with 1 goal in mind -To win the championships. And that's the bottomline. Let's stop this debates based on "what-ifs" and "maybes." We have seen what the players can do through 3 seasons and playoffs. Bynum maybe a force to reckon with but if he is not 100% come playoffs, what good is he to the team? On this basis, I see the Lakers getting a 2nd 3peat but only if the Lakers will have a solidly rebuilt or reinforced team - Kobe, Gasol, Amare, Derron, Artest, Fisher, Brown, Ebanks, Caracter + 2 cheap centers who are solid bangers and 2 cheap role players. The coach would still be PJ. Then let them come to LA and try to beat the Lakers!!!

Kobe looking fly for sure with the aviator shades but when lopez said he is the greatest laker that is definately insulting since he grew up watching them play with jabbar and magic, come on greatest laker hands down in ervin magic johnson and when lopez complimented kobe as the greatest laker he should have said naww its magic or kareem, we all know that kobe played horribly in game 7 agianst the celtics i gotta give it up to my man at least he acknowledged his poor performance saying and i quote" i sucked" this was not a finals to remember but heck its all good the lakers are back to back 2010 nba champions what more can a fan ask for

kobe will be the greatest player from the past and future!

Oh,kobe is so cool.I like he so much!

Thanks for posting this. Very nice recap of some of the key points in my talk. I hope you and your readers find it useful! Thanks again

I’m attempting to add your site’s Rss to my own feed reader but it’s certainly not working effectively, you could need to check it out to make sure its operating appropriately.

It is quite unique,I really can't image how that could be!Do you like sports?I think jordan shoes are really wonderful!
