Michael Cooper talks {current issue of SI} about what Bryant must do to earn the respect of the 1980`s Lakers :

"It`s not about beating the Celtics in the regular season. You have to beat them in the playoffs. That`s when you become a member of the club."

Sorry Kobe, you are not getting past that velvet rope!

I'm still pissed. I wake up in the middle of the night because i was angry.
But, who said this was going to be easy?
It will be more fun in the end.

The important part is the mental edge the c's can get over our players. Like Nadal over Federer. When he started beating him wasn't because he was the better player in the circuit, but because his style anoyed Federer the most. Then he became invencible in Federer's mind, and then he became better overall. We can't afford that.

It's only one game. We are the better team, but they aren't a bad team.

I still maintain Lakers in 6.

GO LAKERS!!!

Let's show some respect on our posts. Keep the Lakers/Celtics stuff out of this thread. This one's for Coach Wooden.

Sorry Kobe, you are not getting past that velvet rope!

Well, that's what we are here to find out. He needs to beat the Celts to have a shot at GLOAT. I don't think you can be 0-2 and be ahead of Magic.

Let's show some respect on our posts. Keep the Lakers/Celtics stuff out of this thread. This one's for Coach Wooden.

With all due respect, you're kidding right? This is a Lakers blog during the NBA finals between the Lakers and Celtics. To continue Lakers/Celtics coversation, I don't think shows disprespect towards coach Wooden his family or his legacy. Again, with all due respect.

Go Lakers!!!

All I know is that I want the Lakers to dump friggin LO and get Chris Bosh. Effing LO is such a loser - wake up you turd!!!! You are in the fricking finals against the most hated celtics - and you don't show up?!?!?!

utzworld & lakalova both bring up good points.

Here's my comprimise:

Usually, whenever there is a call for "a moment of silence" at any sports venue, there is still a small amount of noise from the audience/spectators (usally idiots who can't keep quiet, or the one lone guy to shout something out wether positive or negative)... but did anyone notice how ABSOLUTELY SILENT the Staples Center got? I thought someone hit the MUTE button on my TV...

THAT'S TOTAL RESPECT FOR THE LEGENDARY GREATNESS THAT WAS JOHN "THE WIZARD OF WESTWOOD" WOODEN.

Rest In Peace Dear Sir, You will be missed but your LEGACY will LIVE FOREVER.

Out of respect, I didn't post on the last article devoted to Coach Wooden. Also out of respect, I am not going to skip every thread until the end of time that mentions him, as I expect him to be mentioned with great respect many times in the future. Also the last thread of comments had some kind of slime or something on it.

my post on the Lakers-Celtics series.

Why I’m on the “We got this’ bandwagon.
1) We got this.
2) Overconfident? I’ve been ‘overconfident’ all year. If I read all years worth of ‘we won’t get to the finals because player x or if we play like this blah blah, from a thousand different people, of 100 or so games worth of panic from people saying we can’t win that game because of player x or if we play like this blah blah, you guys can put up the teeny chance that I might actually be wrong for once. If I’m wrong, boo hoo. I think we’re gonna win. If we lose and you guys want to mock me all summer for being wrong about that, frankly, I’m not going to notice, because I’m just going to be pissed that we lost a series we should have won.
3) I’m not a player, a coach or in any way associated with the Lakers organization. My overconfidence, believe it or not, is not going to change how the Lakers play.
4) We answered all the questions that needed answered in Game 1. I know we can win this. Obviously, there is nothing certain in life, but…
5) We totally got this.

Re banning certain idiots; I think banning Mike T was effective at least partially simply because Mike T is too big of an egotist to keep posting comments if he couldn't use his real name to get attention. Similarly, I suggest that instead of worrying about emails or IPs, we simply delete every comment that appears under the name 'E*** W****' or 'D***H'

And even if it doesn't work, that is a price I am personally willing to pay, as they never have said anything worthwhile.

You are all deceived if you think the lakers are going to get favorable calls in boston!!! yes, celts were a crappy home team during the regular season but playoffs are a different ballgame. they played .500 ball at the end of the season but rolled through the playoffs when it matters.

refs and stern are going to hand these games to the celtics in boston. can you actually remember a game when you thought...wow the lakers got a lot of calls their way this game? Never happened!! I watched every game i could this season and went to many Laker blogs - I do not remember ONE game that the bloggers thought that the lakers got favorable calls and that helped them win. Not one!!!

Boston could close out on their home court and that would be totally devastating. Lakers MUST take game 3 or 4 otherwise it will be worse than 2008. They probably come back to staples with lakers down 3-2.

And stop saying that Ray Allen can't hurt us again with so many threes. Of course he can if lakers are going to leave him wide open. He is not sasha. He actually can make them during the game. can't stand the guy but he can hit them. if he was on the lakers he'd be KILLING other teams with so many open 3s. we give our guys open 3s and they fricking brick all night long. if we only had a dang shooter that could hit something.

lakers in 7.

IT’S STILL ABOUT THE MATCHUPS !!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you know basketball, then you know that this series is over even though the Celtics managed to steal Game 2. While the Celtics head back to Boston with home court advantage, their hopes and aspirations to win this series are just fool’s gold because Games 1 and 2 clearly demonstrated that the matchups that fueled Boston’s 2008 championship triumph have now shifted strongly in the Lakers favor. The Lakers are simply the superior team.
~
I said before this series started there was no way the Celtics could defeat the Lakers if Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and Andrew Bynum dominated their matchups with Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Kendrick Perkins. I also said that I could see Ray Allen shooting the Celtics to a surprise win or even the refs gifting them another win. But bottom line, as long as the Lakers controlled those three key matchups in this series, they will triumph.
~
What we saw last night was simply the Lakers losing track of Ray Allen and the Celtics coming up with some questionable calls from the refs and big plays from Rondo in the clutch that enabled them to steal a road win. More importantly, however, we saw Artest once again hounding Pierce to another poor game, Gasol once again schooling KG, and Bynum once again dominating Kendrick Perkins. Expect more of the same in Boston.
~
Look for the Lakers to regain control of the boards in Boston and to pound the Celtics into submission. The Lakers will win 2 of 3 games in Boston to return home with a 3-2 lead heading into Game 6 at Staples Center because there is no way the Celtics can win without major contributions from Pierce, Garnett, and Perkins. The die have been cast. Kobe will not have another subpar game and the Pau and Drew will continue to dominate.
~
For the weak hearted and the doubters, these are not the 2008 Celtics and Lakers and there will be no magical emergency of Leprechaun trickery or miracles in Beantown so stop biting your nails and fretting over nothing. This is an over-the-hill team with worn-out and belittled KG, a frustrated and hounded Paul Pierce, and a Mike T. Kwame clone getting destroyed by a one-legged beast of a Bynum. Ray and Rondo are not reasons to fear.
~
Nothing has changed. It’s still all about the matchups. No disrespect the Celtics but it’s still Lakers in six.
Actually if the Lakers lose 3 in Boston I'd love to see Kobe throw rocks at the Lakers bus and turn it over by himself!!! LOL!!!
OK, maybe I shouldn't have wished for one of those classic series, but it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Sasha or Fish needs to knock Allen on his can on his follow through, make him think about it.
Before I get on Lamar's case, I'd like to see him get more minutes. Very few players can get into any kind of rhythm without more consistent minutes.
Even though the C's got a lot of fouls, it did disrupt the Lakers' rhythm throughout the first half especially.
The positive signs were how easily the Lakers got the lead back after being down 14, how they could have easily won if Kobe wasn't in foul trouble and the fact that they now know (like they should have anyway) that Allen will kill them if they leave him open. Also, unless something major changes, it seems pretty clear that the Lakers can out play the C's front court on both ends.
I figure we win at least one in Boston but probably two. We can't sweep them there because we all know we will get robbed in at least one of the games there. It always happens.
if we only had a dang shooter that could hit something.
We did, his name was Trevor Ariza.
The worst move the Lakers made last summer was letting Ariza go.
Ron Ron was a great pick up that added defensive depth. My point is that the Lakers should have somehow, some way, found a way to keep Ariza AND get Artest.
Imagine him coming off the bench for Ron, or for whomever.
Quickness, driving ability, and draining timely 3's.
I know, crying over spilt milk now, but still, he was an excellent role player in LA and Kobe, Gasol and Drew would have made him even better this year.
But then, if the Lakers win it all this year Ariza will be a distant memory fading faster than a speeding bullet.
But if they don't, there will always be that what if.
C'mon Kobe, your time is now.
Actually if the Lakers lose 3 in Boston I'd love to see Kobe throw rocks at the Lakers bus and turn it over by himself!!! LOL!!!
Whew, that was really funny!!
Seriously.
I know this may sound silly, but you can't tell the Boston fans that they can't blame the refs in game 1 because they had more FT. Then turnaround and blame the refs when the Lakers had more free throws this game. Were there some bad calls, absolutely, but there were some bad calls in game one. At least the refs are consistently making bad calls. The Lakers need to adjust to the refs at the beginning of the game when they knew they were calling it tight.
The game was decided in the last three minutes after LO missed the three point shots. From that point, Lakers were rallying Gasol was being manhandled by either Garnett or Davis in the post, Drew was trying to guard Nate at the top of the post, I didn't see what happened to Farmar. The next play were the jump shot of Fisher blocked by Rondo, desperation shot by Artest followed by Kobe, fouls by Gasol whoaaa, the dam breaks lose and Celtics can do no wrong while Lakers forgot that they were a team.
I think Red's comments were accurate, if Lakers don't will to win it, then they are not going to win. If they are waiting for the blessing of referees to settle the score, nobody will help them. Always assume that Lakers are against 8 guys on the court. Finals are do or die propositions not this 'we got this' attitude. In the first place, if that was the mojo of the Lakers the Odom switch, the "we got this" bandwagon, then 2008 will come back and haunt us.
It has to be a strong hammer and sickle whatever you can pick and use, use it to destroy leprechauns. Some of you here were not born in 1969 when Lakers were favored to win it all then lost. Some of you here were not even blogging in 2008 when we came in favored, my good friend Lakerton even optimistically predicted 4-0, then 4-2 until it was 2-4 in a blow out game. Be serious fans, don't treat this just like a season game, passion must run higher, players must show some degree of necessity. If we lose games in a matter of two minutes, what does it say? WE ARE CARELESS AND COMPLACENT.
Ahhhh... delusional lakers fans... your team took 23 more freethrows going into the 4th quarter than our beloved celtics , yet you people have the you-know-what to complain about the officiating?
You didn't hear our fans cry about Ray Allen being in foul trouble in game 1 - and that's because celtics fans are much more knowledgeable of the game than you lakers fans who are so caught up in the dust and polluted air out there in lala land to realize what's going on here.
BTW , lamar odom better not show up here in boston for game 3 as celtics fans are planning to sing "something" about his fake-ass celebrity wife...you know , like how we sang "new york knicks" to lebron will-never-win-a-ring james!
Kadina Mesa,
Why do you come to our blog? Why not blog with Boston Globe? If you cannot stand the celebrity wife or the free wheeling complaints in this blog, this is not the blog for you. Go back to your blog, outsider.
because our own blog ( celtics blog ) is completely full and overwhelmed with messages from our fans! I figured the lakers blog will not be as full as lakers fans as many of them are too preoccupied with other stuff - you know , like plastic surgery and botox!!
Kedina Mesa.... You didn't hear the Celtics fans complain about the first game cause you are on our fricking blog. We heard enough of Rivers hints to the Refs on Sun. nite and you can see how the calls were called last nite. Have no fear the lakers will win the next two!! Lakers in 6
Where is the poster DFish? your presence is sorely missed here sir.
Derek Fisher needs to go! OK, at the very least he needs to come off the bench for the remainder of his playing career. Sure, every once in a while he can get hot and knock down jumpers but what the Lakers need MUCH MORE is defense, not a few lousy jumpers. And at this point, Derek can NOT guard anybody's grandma let alone NBA players.
That in itself was bad enough but the beginning of game 2 against Boston, Derek was clearly lackadaisical and lazy in pursuing Ray Allen from screen to screen. This total pathetic lack of effort was what ignited Allen into his shooting spree.
Where was the Derek Fisher that continually hounded Allen in game 1 and continually manhandled him and played him rough? It was obvious from the beginning that Derek was going to slack off thinking the serie was over.
That said, Derek wasn't the only one with lousy defense. Shannon Brown was caught playing STUPID defense as well. Coaches should have told Brown to get into Allen's jersey and stay in there with him. Forget about double team or helping any of his teammate out. If there is ONE Celtic who should be faceguarded 110% of his time on the court, that would be Ray Allen. And if coaches have already told him so, Shannon should be yanked off the court and severely berated on.
STUPID, STUPID, LACKADAISICAL DEFENSE was what doomed Lakers in game 2. Now it's going to be 2008 all over again...
PS: Here's an idea Phil: LA needs Kobe to stop Rondo so bench lazy stupid Fisher and start Sasha so he can guard Allen. One Kobe cannot guard both Rondo and Allen at the same time. At least we know Sasha will always give 110% in his effort to chase down Allen.
Art-Fl, ya, I always thought getting Artest was great because we could use his tough d. However, I thought they should keep Ariza and lose LO. Yes, yes, I know everyone on LO's versatility etc.... but again, it's useless if he doesn't use his talents. What a total waste of athletic ability....really sad.
Having Ariza would have been so awesome. We miss his quickness, his slashing ability, steals, his 3 pointers as you mentioned, etc... Mitch and Buss should have let LO walk. Ya, he might show up one game this series but we all know he is the x-factor that could take the Lakers over the top. Just tired of waiting for him to show up.
Much rather have someone like Ariza who played his heart out every game.
Man I miss Ariza!!!!
REPOST:
Greetings Lakeshow Fans,
May John Wooden rest in peace...a lengend of all legends.
***Thoughts about the Lakers and fellow fans***
Wow! Where's the faith in a 1-1 series THUS FAR...Too much of an "obituary" feeling from fellow fans. Not necessary....
Like I've said all along, there will be NO cakewalk in winning the title from both parties. Believe me, Boston knows this and so do we, after last night's loss. It's ON!
OK, here's a wakeup shot...If the possibility of losing to the Boston Celtics is the ONE thing driving fear into our hearts and breaking our confidence in our team as TRUE fans, here's the LARGER picture.
Tell me a team, injuries, ADVERSITY and all, that has made it to the Finals 3 CONSECUTIVE years since the three-peat Lakers of 2000-2002... Also, tell me a team that was humbled the previous year to these very Celtics in 2008 and BOUNCED back and win it all the FOLLOWING year in 2009 vs the Celtics ouster called the Magic...Folks, if you ask me, our Lakers have given us a heck of a ride thus far in 2010, and not over YET by any stretch of the imagination. For petes sake, it's 1-1.
If you are worried about KB24's legacy, last year's championship pretty much got the "monkey" off his back per se...Believe me, I was happy for him both professionally and personally and the rest of the Lakers faithful. He's got 4 RINGS...
Let's STIR the pot comparing the current Celtics stars for good MEASURE in terms of bosy of work...Thus far, PP, R. Allen, and KG ONLY have ONE. It took them (except PP) to go to Boston after 10+ years just to WIN ONE, of course at the expense of the Lakers. It is what it is...ONE! Hypothetically, if KB24 and company win another one, it will be 5 RINGS for KB24 personally. That will be 4 MORE than the three amigos.
On the other hand, if the three amigos win, it will be 2 RINGS, still two short of KB24's 4 TOTAL RINGS. Folks, you see, KB24 did it with ONE team, while the other guys (except PP) had to go to another team to FINALLY win one...KB24's loyalty to the Lakers, despite all the ups and downs, is the TRUE indicator of his legacy in terms of the OVERALL body of work in the NBA. Boston, who missed out on defending their title of 2008, proved that ONE HIT wonders do EXIST...
I'm not trying to sugarcoat anything at this point in terms of our mood as fans after a loss in game #2 (still MORE games to PLAY)...I'm just APPRECIATING what this current Lakers team has done the past three years in getting to the promise land, the championship round. Tell me, do you think that Boston can make it to the Finals the next two years after this one? Maybe...maybe NOT...Until they DO so, I believe that there is no other team out there that has shown their mettle to rise back to the top than our Lakers through it ALL...In the face of uncertainty, lies the will to WIN...That's why the Finals is a series, NOT a one game decider...
With this in mind, I'm proud to be a Lakers fan no matter what, and have been for a LONG TIME...LONG TIME (Remember when Magic Johnson came in his rookie year and won it all? The loss to Mr. Erving and Philly, Bird and Boston, Isaiah Thomas and Detroit in the 80's? The loss to MJ's Bulls in 91, the Elden Campbell, Eddie Jones, Nick Van Exel experimental days, Shaq and KB8's arrival in LA in the 90's?). We all know what happened since 2000...4 titles in 6 tries thus far (losing to Detroit and Boston)...NOT BAD at ALL.
Like I always say, Laker pride through ALL and ANY ADVERSITY!
As for the current state of affairs, I expect the Lakers to give Boston a run for their money the next three games, with a return trip back to LA for a chance to win it ALL. Gotta BELIEVE folks.
Guard play is a terrible mis-match in favor of the Celtics.
Stop with the nonsense of Sasha trying to cover Ray Allen, the last time they tried that Ray Ray sent him to the bench crying in his towel.
I can't see the Laker bench playing any better (and they stunk last night) in Boston. This could be a 2004 repeat of Lakers getting blitzed 3 straight on the road in the finals.
Yeah Ross,
Also, Ariza had more experience in the Triangle and sometimes Ron just seems lost offensively. Imagine Ron on Pierce, Kobe on Rondo and Ariza on Allen.
Maybe this summer we can trade LO to the Rocks for Ariza.
:)
Wonder why we don't ever see Mbenga come off the bench instead of LO.
Unbeilivable!
Even with a starting line up the LAkers best ever of Jabbar, Gasol, Baylor, Kobe and Magic, Lakers still can't win game 2 last night, ask DAVID STERN why?
You guys are right. We wouldn't have lost yesterday if it hadn't been for Derek Fisher. Probably because we would have been eliminated by the Suns last round. But hey, if it didn't happen in the last twenty four hours, it doesn't count, right?
David Stern needs to be ejected of the game yesterday. If everybody from players, Coaches, GM's and NBA Owners gets penalized by the NBA. Commisioner's and refs should be too!
Art,
I have no idea what PJ thinks but he has the rings so guess he knows what he's doing. I don't think I've seen mbenga play the entire playoffs. What up? I'd love to see him hit his shot - at least he plays hard when he's on the court.
Yes, Ariza for Lo anyday!!!!! Of course, the rockets like all other teams don't want our trash! Farmar, Sasha, Brown, LO, etc...
Mission Impossible!!
Code name project for the NBA refs in last night's game to David Stern.
Lakers: Bynum and Gasol both dominant in the paint, Artest defense of PP, Kobe attacking, finishing and finding his teammates.
Celtics: Perkins no show, KG no show, PP, no show!
Only Allen and Rondo played well for the Celtics, that's it TWO guards? Thunder, Jazz, Suns, Heat, Cavs, Magic could have beaten the Celtics last night.
How can we make the Cetics win over the Lakers. Mission Impossible!
I think game 3 is just about the right time for Mbenga to spend some quality time mbanging with Perkins.
Celtics: Perkins no show, KG no show, PP, no show!
Only Allen and Rondo played well for the Celtics, that's it TWO guards? Thunder, Jazz, Suns, Heat, Cavs, Magic could have beaten the Celtics last night.
All except the Laker could have beaten the Celtics last night.
DO THE LAKERS LACK THE KILLER INSTINCT?
Hey Tony, SAY 'ELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIENDs, Abe Frohman, Dfish & Eric Wright.
My little friends, "Every day above ground is a good day."
Hey guys we got a new post up
MM
Sure we all remember 2008 when Ray Allen took it to the basket for a layup while making Sasha looking foolish. Nevertheless I'd take my chance that Allen puts the ball on the floor and beats Sasha again to the basket while getting by our 7-footers in the paint for two points than him shooting a wide-open trey after losing Fisher behind a screen.
While I'm not crying the sky is falling I certainly am disappointed by the lack of effort. It was totally night and day the difference between game 1 and game 2 as far as Lakers' effort was concerned. In game 1, it was obvious that LAL was bent on proving how tough they were from the beginning starting with Artest vs. Pierce then continued with Fisher manhandling Allen right from the get go. The rest of the Lakers also came out with fire and determination to beat down on the Celtics. In game 2, complacency reared its ugly head once again and it was obvious LAL were not going to have its defensive intensity to start the game with.
In the end Lakers may win it all anyway but that doesn't excuse the lack of effort IN FRONT OF THEIR HOME FANS for game 2.
Sorry but just beat the Celtics is NOT enough. Lakers need to beat UP on the Celtics physically and demoralize them mentally. Why on earth try to win the serie 4-1 if they can rub the Celts in and embarass them 4-0. One loss to the hated Celtics is one loss TOO MANY and is an insult already -much more when it is at home no less.
if we only had a dang shooter that could hit something.
We did, his name was Trevor Ariza.
______________________________________________
For the 1000th time, Ariza's AGENT and Trevor himself....REFUSEED to talk with the Lakers, putting the Lakers under time pressure to make a decision about Artest. Dr Buss had an offer on the table to Ariza. Ariza and David Lee SPAT in the face of Buss and would not make contact. Buss heard that Trevor and AGENT definitely WERE talking to the ROCKETS during this time period, however. So Buss told Kupchak to "pull the trigger" on the Artest deal. This was Ariza's play all the way! HE controlled the action. People need to STOP characterizing it as te Lakers REJECTING poor little TREVOR!
