HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE THIS TEAM ???
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Watching the highlights of Game 7 for probably the millionth time still brings tears to my eyes as my love for this team overwhelms my emotions. What still jumps out at me is the simple truth that there were at least six players without whom the Lakers would not have won this championship, absolute incontrovertible proof that it is teams that win championships just as much as it is superstars.
~
(1) KOBE BRYANT. Who can deny that Kobe was the MVP of the series and has now reclaimed his standing as the NBA’s best player, that Stern and the ESPN dominated sports media had prematurely awarded to LeBron James? Even struggling with his shot, Kobe still nailed a critical jumper to keep the Lakers ahead by 4 as well as cleaning the boards and getting himself to the line by attacking the rim and forcing Stern’s reluctant refs to blow their whistles. Kobe led this team to the championship. With the 2010 Finals on the line, he showed he could win by leading and trusting his teammates.
~
(2) DEREK FISHER. Those who really know basketball understand how important Derek is to this team. His physical toughness, inspiring leadership, and clutch shooting were why Phil and Kobe have always trusted him. This may have been his last year as the Lakers starting point guard but his clutch 3-pointer to tie Game 7 won’t be the last heroics we will see from him. When Jimmy Kimmel asked Fish if he was checking to see if he still had his testicles when he went to the locker room in Game 7, you had to love Derek’s reply that he was just making sure they were as big as he thought they were. Without Fish’s heroics in Game 3, the Lakers wouldn’t have had a chance to win Games 6 and 7.
~
(3) RON ARTEST. While we all loved Trevor Ariza, are there any Lakers fans left who still doubt that the defensive toughness and timely scoring by Ron Artest is a major reason why the Lakers were able to win their second straight NBA championship? From his lock down defense on Kevin Durant to his game saving rebound basket against the Suns to his Game 7 defense against Pierce and clutch shots, Ron Artest showed over and over that he has the championship mettle and toughness we needed. There was not a dry eye in Lakersville when Ron hit that 3 to put the Lakers up by 6. As Phil said, Ron was the MVP of Game 7 and fulfilled that promise made to Kobe in the showers in 2008.
~
(4) PAU GASOL. I think even ouchhhhhhhh would agree that Pau Gasol was indispensible to the Lakers repeating. Pau’s block on KG followed by a clutch hanging jumper in the paint with 3 Celtics hammering him and his Game 7 cinching rebound clearly showed championship mettle. The fact that Kobe called “The Spaniard” out for his play should finally end the constant questioning of Pau’s heart or ability to play tough when needed. He will be the Lakers #2 option as the Lakers seek to three-peat and should now be clearly recognized as best power forward in the NBA. It’s Gastrong, not Gasoft.
~
(5) ANDREW BYNUM. When you listen to the NBA analysts who know what they are talking about and the head coaches of the teams that the Lakers eliminated in their pursuit of this championship, it becomes clear that Andrew Bynum’s length and strength was one of the major factors opposing teams were unable to match when playing the Lakers. Drew’s physical presence in the paint allowing Pau to play power forward and Lamar to come off the bench completely reversed the matchup advantage the Celtics enjoyed in 2008 to the Lakers favor in 2010. He and Ron were the difference from 2008
~
(6) LAMAR ODOM. While he struggled at times, there is no way that the Lakers would have repeated were it not for the contributions of Lamar Odom. Much like Andrew Bynum, Lamar often does not get enough credit for the impact he has on the team, especially his rebounding and playmaking. His sacrifice by being willing to come off the bench and his versatility in being able to play and guard 4 positions make Lamar the best 6th man in the NBA in my opinion. And that is not even counting that he allows the Lakers to be able to man the 4 and 5 positions with All-Star level players all game long.
~
If you look at this year’s playoffs, I think you could argue that we would NOT have won the 2010 NBA championship without the contributions of these six players. That is not to denigrate the contribution by Farmar, Brown, Vujacic, and Walton but the Lakers Big 6 were each indispensible to repeating. We all know there are changes coming because we will have to get better in order to three-peat next year. Free agency once again will change the competitive landscape of the league, likely elevating one or more teams to join the current corps of pretenders. But for now, I love every guy on this team.
yo, they better let ron ron perform "champion" at the parade tomorrow. that song is hot fire!!
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
Hey Laker Nation how you feel today, We are the Freakin Champions of the NBA
We hoped we prayed with all our might, That the Lakers would win that night.
Were you sure or did you have doubts, How the Journeys’ end would turn out.
It turned out the only way it could, With Celts losing to The Lakers as they should
Final Battle stages are never easy, That’s why a lot of our stomachs felt Queasy
It didn’t just go for the fans it seems, The queasiness even affected the Team
Some tried to tell us don’t be so cocky, there will be times when the ride gets Rocky
Because Lakers are the upper crust , We thought the title would be handed to us
When that didn’t happen as the 4th quarter began, I heard some say This is the End
Then a voice said Lakers listen to me, All you need do is to apply some Laker “D”
I turned and looked and what did I see,There was Faith giving the sign of victory
I thought to myself has Faith lost her mind, The Lakers can’t win, they’re 2 far behind
But lo and behehold Fish hit a shot Ron hit one and the pitiful Celtics, they could not
Slowly but surely the tide slowly shifted and the gloom in the room suddenly lifted
Just like that the Lakers had the lead, hold it for 9 seconds I heard Justa plead
So they held & wouldn’t you know, The Lakers had the lead as I heard the whistle Blow
At that split second it became perfectly clear, The Lakers were NBA champs again this year
Eyes got misty, some started to cry, And if you want to know the Truth, Well so did I
From then till now I’ve been floating on air, Will I ever come down, I don’t even care.
Dynasty 4 has now been Established, God Bless you Freakin Lakers, Mission Accomplished
That’s it for me, One last thing I have to do, with all of my heart Laker Bloggers I Love U
In my mind's eye, both the Lakers and Celtics are rushing towards each other in the fashion that they have in years past. Matching each other, blow-for-blow, against all-comers until the time to meet together arrives. They are looking squarely in the others direction while they simultaneously brush aside any with the misguided notion that they are also contenders. It is the same as how Bruce Lee will casually vanquish all of the Big Boss' henchmen on his way to the real dance. It is all about Boston. It has always been about Boston. As far as improving our team?
We have the luxury of just re-signing the regulars and 'waiting' for a Ron Artest deal to come our way.
We are head and shoulders above any team in the league. Any team that adds a key player still has to meld into some chemistry. They may look scary on paper, and have regular season success ,(see any of Lebron's teams as an example), but we have 3 years of tested strong playoff team play ahead of any pretender.
As Kobe said, "Just try and take this away from us!"
I believe the Lakers all feel confidently, they are two Titles won, and......
.....are just starting to peak.
Ha.. It's going to rock, hard. Lakersblog (and Lakersplus) represent :)
What could be better? NADA FAITH, NOT A DAMN THING!!! OOOOH WEEE.
Because Lakers are the upper crust , We thought the title would be handed to us
When that didn’t happen as the 4th quarter began, I heard some say This is the End
Then a voice said Lakers listen to me, All you need do is to apply some Laker “D”
I turned and looked and what did I see,There was Faith giving the sign of victory
I thought to myself has Faith lost her mind, The Lakers can’t win, they’re 2 far behind
But lo and behehold Fish hit a shot Ron hit one and the pitiful Celtics, they could not
Slowly but surely the tide slowly shifted and the gloom in the room suddenly lifted
MM, For those of us not fortunate enough to be able to attend the parade, how about a FINAL CHAMPION CHAT...
LAKERS DRAFT PROSPECTS…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While the Lakers first round pick in the 2010 NBA draft belongs to Memphis as part of the Pau Gasol trade, the Lakers do have two second round picks – the 43rd and 58th picks. Here are the players that NBADraft.net has the Lakers picking in the second round:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
#43 – GREIVIS VASQUEZ, 23-year old 6-6 211 lb combo guard from Maryland:
~
NBA Comparison: Dimitris Diamantidis (offensively), Zoran Planinic
~
STRENGTHS: A combo guard with good scoring instincts and advanced passing ability … Has a natural feel for the game and is able to see plays well before they materialize, allowing him to deliver passes that seem impossible to make ... At 6'6 he has great size for a guard (as it allows him to see over top of defenders, but it also makes him a difficult matchup) … He has good potential to play in a pick and roll system, because he is good at keeping his dribble alive and drawing the rotation … Has crafty moves off the dribble, and uses his long strides to get past defenders ... Can use either hand to finish at the basket ... Split time between both guard positions, and was able to bring a nice mix of attributes to both spots … Showed the ability to operate without the ball and come off screens … Has become a better shooter from the outside, stretching his range and improving his percentages ... Solid contributor on the glass as well as in the steals department ... Plays with a lot of passion and confidence, he is not afraid of throwing difficult passes or taking big shots … Has proven that he can perform in key moments against top level collegiate competition … Continued to improve various facets of his game throughout his career …
~
WEAKNESSSES: Lacks the first step to explode by defenders ... Has a hard time turning the corner, and usually has defenders riding his hip ... He is not an aggressive player and has trouble against defenders who get into his body … Not a great finisher inside, he doesn’t have great strength or body control to complete plays through contact … Can be very erratic with the ball and with his passing (taking way too many risks)... Shoots a slight set shot, which takes longer to release and allows the defense to recover ... Not a great shooter off the dribble, does not have great rhythm and elevation, which is the cause of inconsistent results from midrange ... Does not project well as a defender at the next level, lacks the lateral quickness and does not put forward much of an effort on that end ... Will have a hard time containing either guard position off the dribble … Is an arrogant player, which is sometimes a positive, but he needs to learn to control his emotions and not cross the line …
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
#58 - ALEXEY SHVED – 22-year old 6-6 187 lb point guard from Russia:
~
NBA Comparison: Penny Hardaway
~
Strengths: A 6-7 natural point guard with immense upside ... A real competitor, also very smart. Charismatic ... Really has a great feel for the game at a young age ... Has it all offensively with the ability to shoot off the dribble with range as well as take it to the basket ... Tremendous passer and ball handler ... Has a nasty crossover and handles the ball well against the quickest of defenders ... Makes the game look very easy ... Creates baskets for his teammates and makes those around him better ... Very bouncy, good leaper with huge wingspan ... Looks very young. Could still be growing ... Has huge hands giving him added control over the ball ... Applies himself defensively and shows good instincts staying in front of his man and not biting on fakes ... One of the top overall prospects in all of Europe ...
~
Weaknesses: His frame is very long but his shoulders are narrow and he is very skinny ... May never be a very strong player, but as a point guard, that's less important ... Added strength will allow him to drive to the basket and absorb contact better ... He'll also be able to use his size better on the boards ... Being from Russia, he has some hurdles to cross as a number of recent Russian players (besides AK47) have struggled to make the transition to the NBA/USA culture ...
~
Here is another review of Alexey from Hoopsworld article on 5 Best International Prospects:
~
ALEXEY SHVED – 6'5 Guard (Russia)
There have been plenty of international guards with great height like Alexey Shved that couldn't make it because of the game's physicality. Shved's ability to stick in the league will largely be determined by that as well. If he can get stronger he'll last, if not he'll be back in Russia within two years.
~
His ball handling skills are superb as are his defensive instincts. He'd be great for a team with an experienced coaching staff to get a hold of as his natural gifts give him great potential. At 6'5 he could play shooting guard if needed, but is a good enough playmaker to be a lead guard full-time.

TOM

Manba24, It's away positive energy whenever I see you're post, brother you're one of a kind. Have a great Sunday, and all the Fathers"HAVE A GREAT FATHERS DAY" Peace.

Yes, Happy Father's Day to all. My son and I talk after every Laker game and were just thrilled Thursday night. I did raise him (Laker) right, ha, ha! Such great fun!

Laker Tom,

Alexey Shved would be my pick. I have another feeling he could be another Sasha one who played the point in Europe but plays SG in the NBA. But as long as he could spot up and shoot, run the offense, and play better defense than Sasha I wouldn't mind. The Suns got Goran Dragic so it's worth another gamble for a prospect in Europe that Fisher could develop and hopefully learn the offense instead of another Jordan Farmar.

MM,

Thanks for this Blog my friend and to all the fellow Laker bloggers as well, with a shout out to Mamaba24!

OK Mamba24
You're stringing this bon voyage out magnificently... but I'm sensing that you'll be posting again by Tuesday or Wednesday... so I'll postpone going into how --without your helmsmanship, this blog can degenerate into so many opinions preening and pounding each other. There ARE a number of folks who make this blog extraordinary --something beyond just some sports fans prattling... but since you're likely to reappear in a few days, I won't go into how important your presence is to this strange virtual family.. and how --beloved you are here...

You ok Fatty? The horses ok?

Yes that's right Mamba, onto the 17th title :)

Happy Father's Day Lakerblog Daddys!

I don't post often...but do read the board so thanks everyone for their contributions. (Phred - I'm Ballin Sparty that won our fantasy bball league). While enjoying #16 and reading up on other Lakers finals I read an article on 1984 gm 7. The Lakers shot 49% from the field and Bos 39% that game. But Boston outrebounded LA 52-33 and shot 51 free throws to the Lakers 28. So next time Celtics fans want to whine about the refs...ask them if they also whined after 84 gm 7.

Also...Bird was 6-18 and Magic 5-14 shooting that day. So, I guess Kobe's not the only all time great that shot poorly in a gm 7.

Enjoy the parade!

Eloquence speech, my brother! You're the heart and soul of the bloggers. In case you haven't heard, thank you! Thank you for your compassion which united us together as the best sport blog in the planet! Your uplifting spirit are always appreciated!

I hope to be able to get together with all the bloggers after the parade. Faith, if you had a meeting place in mind, please post it. I'll do my utmost to share a drink or two with my blog brothers/sisters!

Wallace,

LakerTom, nice, nice 2009-2010 summation of the NBA CHAMPS L.A. LAKERS. it was quite a year. MAMBA24, thanks for being the "glue" that holds this board together. mucho thanks. it's been a great year for "our" team. can't wait 'til the 2010-2011 season. BUT first our players need rest, surgeries, vacations, new contracts, new free agents etc. BUT, one thing for sure is......we've got great ownership, great front office, great coaching staff AND a great nucleus returning to fold......a nucleus that will win another championship and allow phil jackson to have his 3rd 3peat of his career. which, probably will never ever be duplicated again!

oops, i meant p.j's 4th 3peat! typo....ha ha

NOTE TO ALL. PHIL(11 Rings) Jackson has never won a Championship without 3-Peating. This I say would bode...OUT FREAKING STANDING for next year!!
*
@ FATTY - I heard about the fire out your way on the news. It didn't sound too good. Let us know that you are alright Man.
*
@LakeShowinPhx, thanks for the kind words my brother and for all you do and have done to help make this the 2 Time Award Winning Blog it is.
Mamba24(larrY)

EVIDENTLY SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH EITHER MY BROWSER OR COMPUTER TO KEEP DOUBLE POSTING LIKE THIS. AGAIN I APOLOGIZE!!!!
mamba24

Larry,

It's probably not you. I've seen quite a few double posts, sometimes even in the same thread, for the past few days.

And you're Larry, we all love you, so you can do whatever the hell you want. :P

Wonderfully tough season.

I've been giving it considerable thought.

I'd trade Bynum for Bosh. So much risk related to injury versus missed games versus risk Bynum has no further problems and that Bosh can't fit well or step up in crucial moments.

I'll work on it Mamba24... but I used up a lot of capital on that Artest 3 pointer..

You really earned a sabbatical... enjoy it.
Guess that means that tomorrow, the inmates are...

IPAD! NOAH...

IPAD! NOAH...

@BENJAMIN, Stop that! You are going to make me get a Big Head and some call me fat head already. Lol! Thanks bro. for all the kind words. So how do you rate this title in relation to the others you experienced. This is my 2nd best ever. The first is when Magic played center and Told Kareem "We're going to win it for ya Cap" and did! This one is a very close second!
Mamba24(larrY)

ATI,

...what is this anyway.. I don't work for Apple.. I'm a boatbuilder.
I'm just petitioning (again) for an ipad for Justa. From YOU.

btw.. a real God uses bold font for his commandments.. not just capital letters..

Ah J-Dizzle coming from the OC Register to nose in just because Bynum the franchise player is getting blasted.

Bet our Bottom Dollars? What are you a fortune teller? Can you tell us what the lottery (money) numbers are? Do you know how to solve California's economic crises? Can you solve the nation's economy and find a way to fix it? Why the hell am I asking because you are saying you can bet our bottom dollar with a "guarantee" and well it seems like you are a fortune teller and well if you are right about Bynum well I would like to know the answers to my questions above. (Really I would like to know).

25 and 10? Maybe rebounds I wouldn't doubt but 25 points per game? Hello you want to use the Kobe/Pau usage of touches yet to discredit Bosh's possible numbers yet forget HOW Bynum is getting his points. Alley oop to Bynum, "Oh nice pass to Bynum by Bryant" gives a hint? Bynum on at least (I didn't say at MOST) gets his offense from openings thanks to Bryant and Gasol. Yeah a 57% FG% does come VERY easy when you play close to the basket surrounded by the most skilled big man on the league and the 8th ranked player of all time (this man is already greater than Shaq and Tim).

Ok here's another challenge: How successful will the Raptors be J-Dizzle with Andrew Bynum? Let's assume 24 and 10 but does that equal TEAM success? Bosh is the main focus of defenses other teams aren't going to be scared of Hedo Torkuglu, Bargnani, or the great Jose Calderon! Yet Chris Bosh averaged 24 points per game and still he missed the playoffs! How will Bynum LEAD that same Raptors squad? Will he LEAD the offense and force teams to stop him opening up his teammates instead of simply scoring 25ppg+? Will he take control of the defense and lead it from there? How about in the locker room where you must earn the respect rather than just become a stat jacker like Lebron? Will he do this:

As bad as Shaq was in the 02-03 season with that infamous "I'll heal on company time" quote he showed WHY he was the franchise player compared to Bynum and I'll see the "that was Prime Shaq", Shaq at Bynum's age was arguably more athletic than that Shaq was. Heck Shaq averaged 30ppg that season the only other center to do what was David Robinson who was more skilled than Shaq but then again who got 4 rings compared to 2 rings (whom got carried by Tim Duncan)...speaking of which

Re: What do you mean more skilled? How is Bynum more skilled? Getting dunks on screen and rolls? Simply posting up less than 5 ft from the basket and throwing down a hook shot? Dwight Howard does that quite a bit despite his limited arsena. Almost EVERY scoring center as that move. Shaq did that a TON. So free throw shooting perhaps? Hmm so Nash is better than Bryant because Jose shoots free throws better ? So maybe a jumper? Oh but then again Bynum rarely has to use it since he's in the low post a TON.

You wanna see skill J-Dizzle from a center?

That is skill; maybe that's why Kobe wanted to get those skill (why on a skill wise he's better than Jordan). And the last thing I want to disprove is the "Look what the Celtics did to Dwight". 22ppg on 54% and taking the Magic to 6. In comparison they took the Lakers to 7. Contrary to what you believe J-Dizzle the Celtics didn't "stop" Dwight. They didn't even contain him. Dwight got 2 30 points games against Boston. What they did was stop the rest of the Magic. Rashard played so soft, Vince Carter CHOKED, Barnes was invisible, Jameer Nelson played poorly in comparison the 2 series before. The Magic's best option after Jameer was......JJ Reddick (ewww). So no Dwight Howard wasn't "stopped" despite having 2 other games of playing like crap but then again had bad games? Kobe had a very crappy Game 7 but he still got the Finals MVP!

Fact is Bynum is a great role player but 1) Doesn't deserve $13 million and isn't as comparable to the rest of the 2010 class save for Stoudemire (and he doesn't deserve $18 million), and 2) Isn't the "franchise player that you want him to be! He isn't Shaq and he isn't even on Dwight's level! Oh more skilled (disproved) and a tendency to make free throws better. Ooo wow. Look who got 2 DPOY winners and even better than the more offensively skilled Yao while Bynum was CARRIED by Kobe Bryant's greatness J-Dizzle!

I very much like the "Caught in the Web" summaries that Mark puts up. Excellent work during the year!

I get send a pumped fist up in the air when Mamba24 wraps it up with:
"That’s just a summary of our Resume, we don’t talk we Do.
We’re The Freaking Champion Lakers, Who the Hell are You."

Phil has better everything, IMO, including cigars, than Red. In those early NBA years, before the ABA-NBA merger, there were very few teams. Winning in this more competitive era is more significant. Don't get me wrong, Red with Russell and the other Celtic players were good and winners; but, the league is tougher now. Nice summary of Phil's achievements as coach by LEWSTRS.

Laker Tom was on the money about the key players in our recent success. I would like Phil to play our second team more minutes during the regular season.

Pau has a sweet jump shot from distance. Swish!! What a consistent All Star! I still can't believe we got this fellow.

I agree somewhat with KB Blitz's criticism of Bynum. Bynum needs consistent play overall, improved defense, a jump shot, stronger and more durable legs, and hooks with both hands. Hey, I want him to be more like Pau - since he gets $13 million a year.

"Hey, I want him to be more like Pau - since he gets $13 million a year."

Bynum can't be Pau since they are different players. Bynum is bigger and can secure post position easier considering his size though Gasol is MUCH better at getting inside should he not gain post position.

Bynum does have a jump shot but don't expect him to see much pick and pop. He's more of a post up player and his face up game outside of the jumper is sub-par compared to Gasol or even Odom.

What irks me most about Bynum is people believing that he is a franchise player and gives excuse after excuse. He's being paid $13 million and while there are better scoring options he can affect play on the court much better. Shot blocking/just DOMINATING the glass whether it's offensive or defensive rebounds/hedging pick and rolls to allow guards to recover and HIMSELF recovering instead of staying at the players forcing other players to rotate to the screener should it be a roll to the basket and having an open player to make a shot. Be a playmaker when appropriate and find cutters so that encourages more off ball movement instead of "everyone get out of my way" and when the double comes 90% he tries to score over them which is almost as contested as some of Bryant's shots. And please if he can't get out of the pain early on to gain position remember to get OUT to prevent a 3 second violation. There's a reason why Ben Wallace in his prime was a force to be reckoned with despite being a horrible scorer.

But then again I"m not entirely against Andrew Bynum. He's a great player and a solid 3rd option. What really sets me off is fans who set him as the franchise player and say "If he went here (where he's the first option) he'll be averaging 30 and 15"? What did the Lakers underestimate Bynum's talent? Those are Shaq-esque numbers in which case he SHOULD be the number one option! During the three-peat Kobe was VERY talented enough to be the go to guy but it was Shaq because well at that time Shaq was the most dominant big time of all time. Shaq destroyed his competition and was destroying Ben Wallace/Rasheed Wallace/Elden Campbell while Kobe was shooting bricks against Tayshaun Prince. If Bynum was GOOD as those fans feel he is then he should have not only surpassed Pau's offensive numbers but also be close to averaging 25ppg and force Kobe's numbers to dip down to be as equal. And that's just production wise I'm not even talking about intangibles and having an impact on the team leader wise. There's a reason why Kobe makes his teammates better more than just his assists (which are good but not great numbers). Many times Bynum gets spoonfed for his points and when he has a 20 point game everyone is like (The beast is here! He's our future). In his first year in the Lakers Lamar Had 14 20+ point games but did he convince people he was a legit 2nd option? Not really.

Yes Bynum is a great role player and very talented. Franchise player? He ain't acting like it even BEFORE his injury just a very talented player who got even better thanks to being with Kobe Bryant. Just like those analysts who believed that once Odom went out of the LA Clippers he would become a good offensive force as KG was. Kobe makes his teammates better and he made Bynum really good to the point people believe he's a franchise player when he would be worth $8-10 million per year rather than the $13 million he just made.

I love this team!!!! See everybody at the parade. Let's enjoy this one. After the parade, time to get ready for next season's 3peat!!!!
