Now you all know why I've called Ron "Our Test" the whole season. He tested both our patience and our tickers last night. But we (and he) passed the test. Now we must wait for the next one.
And another big game for D-Laker last night.
As hard as I've been on him, I have to give credit to Vujacic for playing Dragic well in stretches, doing the little things on defense, and even hitting a bucket.
I can live with the Suns' bench playing well, as long as the starters aren't killing us.
PS -- as much as I hate to say it, the C's will win in 6.

In my mind's eye, both the Lakers and Celtics are rushing towards each other in the fashion that they have in years past. Matching each other, blow-for-blow, against all-comers until the time to meet together arrives. They are looking squarely in the others direction while they simultaneously brush aside any with the misguided notion that they are also contenders. It is the same as how Bruce Lee will casually vanquish all of the Big Boss' henchmen on his way to the real dance. It is all about Boston. It has always been about Boston. Boston is the only franchise that has earned our respect...and our derision. @ FEARLESS

I say TONIGHT!!! KOBE BRYANT will have one of the GREATEST SINGULAR GAMES in the history of the game. In the history of the known universe. Many refer to 'THE SWITCH' as though it is tangible, physical object in someones control. The truth is that THE SWITCH is one that can only be ACTIVATED by the SPIRIT, and by METAPHYSICAL FORCES. In the case of Kobe Bryant, the switch is the PLAYOFFS and the BACK AGAINST THE WALL, ELIMINATION GAME. From there, the chattering of the masses shuts off, the instruction of SPIRITUAL MASTERS & SENSEI can be more easily understood, and the HEART OF A LION can be revealed in it's truest form. What the team needs more than coaching, more than new players, more than just a simple win streak is a chance. It needs a MOMENT. It needs a SWORD wielded from a rock that only ONE MAN can retrieve to be struck at the right time. It needs a GAME. It needs a thriller. In it's DARKEST HOUR . It needs a MOMENT. Great win last night!
The refs tried to give Phoenix the game but it's not happening. They say we're lucky, well we gonna ride that luck to 'ship # 16!
We played 5 against eight for big stretches of the game and still won. Dave Stern and his posse of refs can't take it from us, we'll have to give it to them and Kobe already said nothing will suffice but another championship.
We got this!
Go Lakers!!!
Altogether now! We are the Freakin Los Angeles Lakers! Winners of 15 NBA Championships!!! We coming for you Steve Nash, Jared Dudley, Amare Stoudemire, Loopy Lopez and the rest of you fools who think you got a chance!
This is our time! This is our season!

Good Mornin' All (with a special how-do-you-do to my Mamba)
WOW, OMG, DANG...what a fine day.
What was it Rudy T once said? "Never underestimate the heart of a champion." You go RonRon.
After Artest misssed that 3 with 21 seconds on the shot clock I was ready to drive down to El Segundo just to ask him "WTF" in person. And then, redemption. He never stopped playing, he didn't give up on himself.
In fact, in those last few seconds he focused on the mechanics of the game. He noticed Kobe was fouled. He didn't stop to wait for a whistle. He knew the shot would be short because of the foul. He went for the positioning and he made the bucket. He never stopped playing, he didn't give up on the team.
And so freaking what if the Lakers celebrated like they won the championship? That was a special moment. RonRon has worked hard all year to be a true teammate to this squad and he came through for them last night. And they let him know they love him too. That was a pure moment.
I also really dug how our Slovenian got under the skin of their Slovenian.
Now, game five is over and done. Time to focus on game six and the final blow to the Suns - on their home court.
I LOVE THIS TEAM!

Looks like he hasn't lost the stroke he had at the end of the regular season. He knows where he is in the triangle and the ball doesn't stall in his hands like Shannon. He may be in for his defense, but he'll create space on offense that Ron's left open. More Sasha in the mix!

@LakerLass
Totally, the team was celebrating Ron more than the victory to be sure. I have no doubt some Phoenix player or coach will say, 'Hrm, well, it was, um, inappropriate and we'll use that as motivation, hrm,'cause, you know, it's not like they won a championship or anything.'
Actually random Phoenix player or coach in my mind, we've won 16 more of them then you have. We weren't celebrating a championship, we were celebrating a man who has overcome and given up so much just to fianlly become a Laker and play with Kobe. We were celebrating his tenacity, his stubbornness, his timeliness.
That's all, we'll celebrate some more on Saturday.

Some thoughts on the win:
First off Kobe, Fish and Gasol played about as well as you can. Pau is still not getting ANY over-the-back calls and he is getting landed on by guys flying in from the perimeter and, literally, crashing the boards. If this disturbing pattern is allowed to continue in Phoenix (I mean does anyone really think Jason Richardson hasn't been just jumping into guys? That ain't basketball David Stern, c'mon man) then we'll have to give Pau some help by having our guards cut off the lane for the rebound out on the perimeter. We need to maintain our rebounding edge in Phoenix to win.
Farmar and Brown had another Jeckyl and Hyde game on offense but I was really glad to see that it didn't carry over to the defensive side of the game. This might have been Farmar's best defensive game of the year, granted Phil matched him up with Barbosa who's game, though fast, is pretty linear, but he stepped up to the challenge of guarding a faster, bigger player and didn't hang his head when he missed his shots.
Welcome back to the war, Sasha Vujacic, we missed your D for certain. I've always though Sasha's defense is better than his offense. he always brings it and he rebounds pretty well for a 2 guard with a propensity for the jump shot. His up fake and dribble drive 20 footer was a great sign and he hit a 3. This whilst making his fellow country man batty by staying in front of him and not using his hands.
Bynum gave us exactly what we needed. Big presence in the paint which translated into blocked shots, offensive rebounds and altered shots, too. Great game for a guy paying on one leg. The fouls he gets called for should be called all game, it's a minor travesty...but whatever, it's the NBA where consistency is non-existent.
Saturday, saturday, saturday, saturday, saturday, saturday, saturday night's alright...to move onto the NBA Fianls!

Ah yes the "If" scenario...
From Random Sun's fans everywhere:
"If Ron hadn't got lucky and put back the air ball it would have gone into over time!"
"If there was more time on the clock we could have taken the Lead"
"If Artest misses the layup we would have won in overtime"
Thats alot of if Phuns Fans...So here are some if's from The Infamous El Guapo here at the LA Time Laker Blog:
"If a frog had wings, he wouldnt bump his butt when he hops"
"If a buzzard had a piano in his butt there would be music in the air"
And my personal favorite
"If a hen and a half could hatch an egg and a half in a day and a half. How long would it take for a rooster to sit on a doorknob and hatch out hardware??"
Posted by: The Infamous El Guapo | May 28, 2010 at 09:34 AM
Interesting. No doubt, this Suns team is very similiar to the Sacramento Kings teams of the early 2000's-- incredible 3 point shooting, non-st0p offense. And yet this Laker team still wins.
Interesting.
I didn't think the Suns could sustain such shooting 3 games in a row, but they did. They're very much due for a average to poor shooting game, and it should happen game 6. However, this may not occur.
I'm starting to change my assessment of what could be a potential Lakers/Boston finals. Although Cleveland and Orlando are competent teams, neither are as tough, offensively, as Okl and Phoenix. Consequently, I really believe the Lakers have had a tougher time so far than either Boston or Orlando. Likewise, IF ( a big if) the Lakers can close out the Suns, I will change my assessment of the Finals.
If the Lakers beat the Suns, I don't see either Boston or Orlando beating them. The Lakers have tangled with two very difficult teams in Oklahoma and Phoenix; I just don't see Orlando or Boston matching those teams' offensive firepower. Yes, Boston will bang you, but if we have a semi-healthy Bynum, and a mentally stabalized Pau, a determined and focused Odom, and throw Powell in there, we should be able to handle Boston, whose front line is hurting.
Rondo, who has been incredible, is no tougher than Deron from Utah, or Nash. Ray Allen is no tougher than Fry or the numerous other outside shooters from the Suns (and the Thunder, for that matter). And if we play Boston, we'll have home court advantage.
As far as Orlando, this is a team hanging on the threads. If Orlando makes it to the finals, I'll go as far as saying the Lakers could sweep them. No need for much analysis here.
In conclusion, based on assessments, IF THE LAKERS BEAT THE SUNS, I truly believe they will beat either Boston or Orlando in the finals.
So this upcoming game 6 will the most important game this season...

The Suns have the longest record of "ifs" than any team in NBA history.
42 years of 'almost won' and 'should've won', "if" something different had happened.

Sasha has been back - hopefully he continues to get burn and he keeps burning opponents.
I think I figured out the Laker fan dynamic when it comes to Derek Fisher. When I see him play a so-so game and then read comments on the blog like "where are all the haters at now?" it dawned on me that you have two camps. One camp looks at the offensive side of the ball. If the ball goes in, the man is clutch, the man is great, there's no one better on our team suited for the spot, etc etc. However, there's another camp that looks at the defensive side of the ball and cannot believe how the guy still gets the minutes he does when the points are hemorrhaging. Just HOW DO the Funs find a way back from 18pts on the road? Why does Nash look like a hall of famer? Why are we having to switch the screens now? Why did their bench get so many open looks in PHX?
So when I see a great game on the offensive side of the ball and another egg on the defensive end, I call it a near zero sum game... although the stats show a negative +/- even though so many of his minutes come along side the likes of Kobe. Having said this, he played about as good as he possibly can - so good game for him.
Rick touched on something earlier this morning. This game did nothing to squelch Phoenix's self-hype. They're over-rated, but they don't realize it. Good for them!! They think they should be up 3-2 (truth is, they should be at home playing golf in Scottsdale). Phoenix is not as good as OKC, but they ARE more experienced and that's what we're running into here.
The Lakers need their best game of the series tomorrow if they want to win. I called this series in 6 after they lost game 4, but seeing how it went down last night makes me less sure of that.
Time to put the steel toe'd boot to their throat.
As for the Magic tonight, I think they have the confidence, but Perkins getting knocked out will also make the Celts angry. That could be good, that could be bad. Too early to say.
One thing I know is, don't make Mamba angry. He's like the Incredible Hulk.
You would not like him when he's angry.
Salvatore, Stern and Co have risked this very thing along with over-rated Nash (who just so happens to have 2 TWO!! of Kobe's MVPs). I hope right now Kobe is thinking about how he gets called for BS fouls, how Fisher gets called for BS fouls, and yet, go to the hole, get thrown to the ground, nothing. Then the salt in the wound "we deserved to win this"
Remember when I said Steel Toe'd boots??
Think American History X.
That's the level of pissed off I am, and I expect Kobe to be also.

Gotta give PJ some credit.
That last play he drew up, for Kobe to send a high arcing pass to Ron breaking towards the hoop, wow.
He did draw it up that way didn't he?
Hate those biased announcers. If that's the way they are going to be then they may as well make it so that for each home game the team gets to use their own announcers so at least the bias gets shared. Barkley looked more disappointed than the Suns team, what an oaf.
That being said, can't even stay mad about that, was just too nice of a win. Wish that was the last game, gotta give those Suns some credit, they don't got no quit in 'em. Suns are better than Celtics or Magic, just like last year the Nuggets were probably better than Orlando, great preparation for the finals.
Was fun watching Sasha for a change, played some tough minutes and didn't pick up any fouls.
Great to be able to see Ron and the team celebrate Rons good fortune.
Rebounds a key to game 6.

As bone-headed as those two "ill-advised" shots by Ron were, I felt really bad for him. He had that shell shocked look on his face, Like "I can't believe that just happened". But to his credit, he didn't fall apart, didn't disappear. He just kept playing. That last play will go down as yet another amazing moment in Laker history. I was so happy for Ron!
They say the superstars get the calls, but KB24 got jack last night. He was molested on that last play.
Please! Stop switching the bigs on Nash on the pick and roll!
Everytime Drago gets off the bench so should Sasha. He'll earn more playing time.
Pau had some good moments, but he had some really bad ones too. He's been getting man handled.
Fish is money!
I'm going to the Rockies/Dodgers game at Coors field tomorrow night (bought the tix a long time ago) so I'll miss the game. Tempted to sell them but my kids would kill me.
I will, however be checking in frequently!
Lakers close it out tomorrow night.
Boston completes the biggest choke job in NBA history (even if they don't we will get our revenge in the finals)
Go Lakers!

FEARless,
>>> Rick, Fish was talking about championship sacrifice. Ron is still making his.
Outstanding!! Beautiful and poignant observation. I stand corrected, and thank you.

Good Morning Laker Family,
I love Artest's defense, hustle, physicality and tenacity and so whatever we get from him offensively is gravy at this time. Truth is, this is a tough matchup(the smaller, speedier Suns)for Artest than it would be for Trevor Ariza. Ariza would be a nightmare for the Suns because he's a slasher, better finisher on the break(who can ever forget that thunderous slam over Grant Hill two years ago), better three pt shooter as a Laker and quicker perimeter defender with just as active hands as Artest. This series against the Suns would've been tailored made and better suited to Ariza's style of play. Ariza also accepted his role and was comfortable within the Triangle. This is why Ariza struggled and faded late with the Rockets because he isn't accustomed to being the go to guy or being a second or third option. Ariza also was a beneficiary of Kobe and Pau getting double teamed and garnering so much attention(to Ariza's credit, he made the most of his opportunites whereas Artest for the most part has not despite basically getting the same wide open looks).
As for Ron, he's an outstanding physical, strong, in your face defender capable of shutting down or containing the opposing team's premier perimeter scorer. He was brought in to defend players that Ariza has difficulty defending such as Melo, Pierce, LeBron and even Durant(Ariza also had a difficult time against Ron in the playoffs last year). What has happened is not only have Ron and Trevor swapped places and systems, but they've even tried to swap mindsets. Trevor has gone on to Houston with the mindset of taking on a bigger role, while Ron has come to LA with the mindset of just trying to fit in and a smaller role offensively. They have both suffered to some degree as a result. Ron for the most part was at the very least the third option for his past teams, but now is fourth or fifth depending on if Bynum ever shows up. To his credit, Ron never stops playing hard and is always relentless which makes up for some of his make you shake your head, what did you just do plays. Ron will show why as we move closer and closer why we took a chance on him and why he's worth it. He did last night.
These playoffs have once again revealed the greatness of both Kobe and Steve Nash. If the Lakers ever gave Kobe a supremely talented, dead eye, outside shooter(s), the Lakers would be nigh unbeatable. Fish has and will always hit big shots(that what he always seems to do on the big stage), but imagine if Kobe had a Ray Allen or Jason Kapono to pass to for wide open shots? Vujacic was thought to be that player, but has lost his way. Nash just continues to give whatever his team needs and instills confidence in all of his teammates. Nash's ability to raise the level his play along with his teammates and to get the best out of them is amazing. Personally, I don't think Amare will be as good if he decides to go somewhere else which will show how much Nash had to do with the numbers he got.
Finally, I believe the Lakers will finish it in six.

If you haven't read Wise before, his column is worth a bookmark. I was excited to hear his name called in the post-game media op, and was even more thrilled when his article showed up on my Blackberry this morning. It's a great read.

What a game! PHX played awful in the first half and I never really thought the SUNS would win, but I did think it had a good chance of going to OT. Credit Artest for the timely rebound.
The SUNS competed toward the end which I thought was great. You've got to love the banked-in 3 by J-Rich...pure drama.
Well, it's down to 2 more games now. I have a feeling we'll be looking at a Game 7. PHX showed it can get a win in Staples (a lucky bounce, a few more FTs) but it's gonna take a big effort to get there. We ain't done yet!

Thanks. Wise is a great read. With so much ink slung at a subject, he somehow finds a unique corner of it, and puts you in the emotional space of the moment.
Course, then again, I'm a sucker for any article that's effusively pro Laker.

I hope the Suns have that attitude and look past the next game. Its one game at a time in my book....
Posted by: Fatty | May 28, 2010 at 10:24 AM
Look at this way....The Suns pulled their trump card. Laker played awful, just awful towards the end and Nash played his outright best. No one on the Suns team showed up at the end BUT Nash.
Now we make the adjustment to that strategy. Its simple. We will win in Phoenix.
This is one of those games that gives the Lakers flaws to look at without it being a loss. Are you kidding me? A win, and an indicator of what to fix in the next game? The Lakers will close out next game.
Posted by: #4 | May 28, 2010 at 10:29 AM
I like how the media, except for say, Colin Cowherd, is counting out the Lakers.
Listen, luck is a favorable random or chance event. The Lakers are 4-0 in playoff games decided by 3 or less this season.
I'll take luck 4 times, lol.
Posted by: #4 | May 28, 2010 at 10:31 AM
Even Kobe's buzzer missers (??) are clutch in the post season. If he had made the one in OKL series there would have been more than a couple second left in the game, ample time for Westbrook or Durant to get a decent shot off. And if he just missed the one last night like all his other misses, the ball would've bounced off the rim, time will expire and OT will follow. This post season looks more and more like a path of Destiny.
Posted by: vanbinh | May 28, 2010 at 10:32 AM
BTW, its not luck that when a shot like that goes up, our bigs are by the basket. On many occasions through the 3peat, Kobe would have the ball in his hand for the last second decisions, with Shaq, HoGrant, or whatever, by the basket.
Robert Horry, however, is the lone exception. And by his resume, there's a reason I'd have him sitting at the 3 point line with the game on the line.
Posted by: #4 | May 28, 2010 at 10:38 AM
Thanks for the link Rick, nice story.
I think Ron got what he really needed. Ron got him some big love.
Posted by: Noah | May 28, 2010 at 10:45 AM
As Ron said on the last shot, he used his strength and weight on the last play to get position.
That is one reason why the Lakers brought him in. Refs let players play rough around the basket at the end of the game. Richardson fouled him, but the call is seldom made.
It was the battle of the strongest and toughest. And Ron and the Lakers won.
To say it was luck, shows a lack of understanding of the game.
Posted by: Fatty | May 28, 2010 at 10:45 AM
GREAT WIN! We played OK defense and OK offense but still came out with the W. And Ron Artest, all the Laker fans are so happy for you, NY is so happy and proud of you. If you couldve seen the NY laker fans gathered last night at some local bar, you wouldve shed a tear! Well of course we cursed at you for missing two crucial shots in a row. But redemption is sweet!
Now one more win, let's get it done.

yo PUNK, the same rumor was on the AZ CEntral site last night until one of the Phoenix fans acknowledged that in the re-play it is CLEAR that KOBE is INBOUND. no infraction
now the issue of not watching the re-PLAY with U and other Funs is that the replay also shows Hill grabbing Kobe's shirt and Nash fouling
grow up
and if you did not know, MM jinxed the Suns while giving you the comment of the day. enjoy

Butler,
As weird as it saying this, ouchhhhh is right. Kobe was clearly in bounds, it's not even a close call.
Hard to believe Suns fans are complaining about calls given all the love they have gotten from Refs in this series.
Nash doesn't just travel, he takes extended vacations.

Hey Everyone !
I got a concern about the team's play of late and I think if we somehow end up losing the series ,god forbid, it would be a major reason ==> TIRED LEGS LATE IN THE GAME
Our bench's, save LO, glaring inability to provide us with quality minutes forces are main players , who we can trust to execute without lapses down the stretch, have to play 40 + minutes every game while the Suns ( those energetic bench players or rested starters ) are relatively fresh and ready to turn the tables in the 4th.
e.g As great a player as Nash is, he would likely shoot worse than 4-5 in 4th if forced to work hard and remain in the game longer (down the stretch and overall) than he had to in the last two games.
Quite a few games against a quality team like the Suns are going to come down to decision-making/execution late in the game and there are gonna be a lot more mistakes made from our side than on theirs if this trend continues and we will keep blowing leads and getting ourselves in trouble despite having put in a lot of good work to build those leads in the first place.

Oh yeah, kinda wondering why all the networks were raving about Nash with very little mention of Kobe's great game? And I am not taking away from Nash, he was great, but so was Kobe and Kobe won! If Suns would have won, then it should have been all about Nash, but they didn't win. Just seems like, "Oh yeah, BTW, Kobe Bryant was 30-11-9-4, ho hum."

As one who is living in Arizona, the prettiest part, Flagstaff.
I've come accustomed to the Suns' fan loser mentality like Butler's.
This is typical how they handle defeat, especially heartbreaking ones like last night.
Its always someone's else fault. So the make up things to help them cope. The refs cheated, they missed a call, Stern fixed the game with suspending Amare, etc...etc...They just can't handle it emotionally, so comes, the emotional excuses.
There have been studies documenting this behavior at ASU. Its called "Loser Sun's Syndrome."

Take it easy there little guy...you're gonna have an aneurysm.
Well if his teammates suck how did they win last year, and get to the finals the year before. If Nash's teammates are so good why doesn't he have any rings?
It is also pretty simple that he shot the ball because thats how the play was desgined. Do you not know basketball? Or what set play looks like?
On a side note. Do you see what I did? To ask a question you or make an exlaiming remark you only need one punctuation mark at the end your sentences.

(12) NEMAIA FALETOGO - As for Ron, he's an outstanding physical, strong, in your face defender capable of shutting down or containing the opposing team's premier perimeter scorer. To his credit, Ron never stops playing hard and is always relentless which makes up for some of his make you shake your head, what did you just do plays. Ron will show why as we move closer and closer why we took a chance on him and why he's worth it. He did last night
(13) NOAH - I think Ron got what he really needed. Ron got him some big love.
(14) LADYJEM24 - Ron Artest, all the Laker fans are so happy for you, NY is so happy and proud of you. If you couldve seen the NY laker fans gathered last night at some local bar, you wouldve shed a tear! Well of course we cursed at you for missing two crucial shots in a row. But redemption is sweet!
(15) FAN OF THE MAMBA - put me on the Ron Ron thank you bandwagon and the Sasha bandwagon.

Gotta love D. Fish's leadership both on and off the court. During the time out after RonRon's ill advised 3 point shot, Phil was sitting next to Ron giving him an ear full, and Derek comes up and claps and gives RonRon a pat on the head. Picking up a teammate when they're down. To borrow a line from mamba24, Now that's what I'm talking about.
And to RonRon, you have found a place in Laker History! And to quote D Fish quoting Phil Jackson. "You don't have to chase the moment, Play right, and the moment will find you."

Butler,
Did Steve Nash travel? No better question how many times did he travel? In the first quarter he hits Derek Fisher's arm while shooting his shot and then promptly falls down, did he commit an offensive foul on the shot? Or does he deserve an academy award nomination? Here's one more, if you lose can you then say it's because the ref's didn't make a final call for you guys to win the game? They tried to give it to you, but Karma is a bitch!
Just wait until Saturday, you ain't seen nothing yet!

Mamba24,
I'm thinking I might like to invest in that Bandwagon business of yours.
They seem to be flying off the lot like hotcakes!!
I'm also in the market for one.
Looking for a little used, low mileage model that's big enough to hold all the Laker players including the Laker Girls.
It needs to have these really big obnoxious speakers so when I ride around town I can really crank it up for this:

Amit,
Thanks for the question. I agree with your concern regarding tired legs late in games, but the Lakers must suck it up and play smarter. Besides LO, our bench needs to give us more and sustain leads and momentum enabling our starters to rest more. To be honest with you, I still don't like our defensive approach and we should take our chances with their outside shooting by shutting down the lane and clogging the paint. Make them take contested jump shots, but crowd the paint because the Suns have been having a parade to the free throw line. I would much rather take my chances making them strictly a jump shooting team than allowing them to waltz into the lane and get calls.

Vujacic's remarks "He's much younger than I am and I never heard of him when I was back home" seems rather mean-spirited since "the kid on the other team" (Dragic) is only two year's younger and in recent years they were both on the Slovenian National Team. Or, at least until last year when Dragic made the national team and Vujacic didn't! Sounds more like sour grapes.
