Phoenix's fourth-quarter adjustment on Kobe Bryant makes difference in Lakers' 115-106 Game 4 loss to Suns

53951392

Lakers guard Kobe Bryant stood wide open behind the perimeter, waving his arms up and down, hoping the outward body language would help get him the ball. But Lakers guard Derek Fisher didn't see the movement, too busy fixated on driving through the lane. With the shot clock ticking down to five seconds, Bryant flailed his arms again. But Fisher didn't see Bryant again, and instead, attempted a corner three-pointer, which Phoenix forward Channing Frye quickly swatted away.

On the other end, Suns forward Louis Amundson set a screen on Fisher, Phoenix guard Goran Dragic dribbled around Pau Gasol, and Amundson rolled inside. Frye then curled to the nearside perimeter and caught Dragic's pass before finding Amundson down low. He missed the lay-in but drew a foul on Odom, converted on one of two free throws and gave the Suns a 10-point lead with 4:37 remaining in the game.

The described play served as the most visible example that despite Bryant's tremendous effort with 38 points on 15 of 22 shooting, 10 assists and seven rebounds, the team actually didn't do enough to allow Bryant to carry the Lakers when nearly all parts of the team's game, including the post play, bench, three-point shooting and defense, had fallen apart in its 115-106 Game 4 loss Tuesday to Phoenix. Yet, the following play also illustrated how Phoenix made the necessary fourth-quarter adjustments in double teaming Bryant after he scored 15-second quarter points by playing off the weakside of Phoenix's 2-3 zone. With the Lakers trailing by nine with less than two minutes left in the game, Bryant manned the point, met a double team from Frye and Steve Nash on the perimeter and met help defense from Jason Richardson above the circle. Bryant had no choice but to pass to the far corner where Ron Artest stood unmarked for a pretty obvious reason. His shot wouldn't fall. Bryant, on the other hand, wouldn't be given an inch from the Suns' D.

Said Bryant: "It's just knowing that when you catch the ball they have three guys around you, somebody else is open."

"They knew where he was," Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said regarding the Suns' defense on Bryant, who attempted only four field goals in the fourth quarter. "He really had put in an effort to riding that hot spell he had during that period of time [in the second quarter]. They had a double team design out there that they had tried to use to try to limit his touches."

53953014

That couldn't have been more apparent at the beginning of the fourth quarter, when Bryant ran off a pick set by Andrew Bynum on Phoenix guard Jason Richardson. Just as Bryant appeared to drive the lane, Richardson swiped the ball, which bounced off Bryant and went out of bounds. There was a play where Bryant caught the ball on the right block and immediately met a double team, causing Bryant to kick the ball out to Lakers reserve guard Jordan Farmar, who missed an open three-pointer. And then there was the time Bryant drove the lane, met an aggressive Goran Dragic and kicked the ball out in mid air to Shannon Brown, who also missed an open three-pointer.

Yet, plenty of sequences in the fourth quarter simply illustrated the Lakers didn't fully utilize Bryant's ability to take over a game.

After catching an entry pass from Farmar in the near post, Bynum didn't notice an open Bryant on the weakside. Instead, Bynum passed the ball out to Farmar, who missed a corner three-pointer. Then, Amundson boxed out Lakers forward Lamar Odom and cleaned the glass. Moments later, Dragic ran the break, crossing past Farmar into the lane. Bryant caught up to help, while Brown confronted Dragic from down low. But Dudley stood open on the nearside corner. Bryant reacted quickly and contested Dudley's shot, but it went in and widened the gap to 98-89 with 6:47 remaining.

On another play with nearly five minutes remaining, Bryant cut to the top of the key once Artest fed Gasol an entry pass. After getting double teamed by Amundson and Dragic, Bryant waved his arm, but it didn't get Gasol's attention. Gasol didn't necessarily make a bad decision, kicking the ball to an open Fisher in the near corner. But had Gasol seen Bryant continue cutting to the far end of the court and passed the ball to him on the play, Bryant likely would've produced a far better result than Odom's mishandled shot in the paint.

Fast forward to the 4:23 mark and you have Gasol unsuccessfully shooting over Amundson and Dudley in the paint instead of kicking the ball out to Bryant, left unmarked at the top of the key. On the other end, Dragic manned the point up top against Fisher, dribbled left, crossed to his right and then spun past Fisher at the free-throw line. Odom attempted to help, but Dragic switched to his right hand and converted on the layup, widening the gap to 103-90.

When I asked Gasol if a better effort should've been made for Bryant to get more looks when he had them, it appeared Gasol didn't want to come across criticizing Bryant considering the work he put in Game 4.

"I don't know," Gasol said. "He obviously shot the ball extremely well last night. He also made big plays as far as assisting. It was a great game on his part. Unfortunately we couldn't capitalize on it and make it a better chance for us to win the ball game. I don't know if he could've taken any more shots. I think in the fourth quarter, they threw two or three guys at the zone on him to make sure he got rid of the ball or made somebody else make a play. When that happens, we have to understand that we have to be aggressive."

Surely, that's understandable and there were plenty of areas that the Lakers could've sharpened to ensure a victory. But there were a few plays Bryant served as the better option where he had a rare open look.

I hope Pau gasoft was watching Howard last night. People said that Gasoft was the best big guy? No man Howard is the best. He scored points grabbed rebounds and blocked shots and he was in the paint and not on the perimeter like he is a 7' guard. Plus he delivered the People's elbow on Davis so desicively that The Rock would have been proud. In fact I now proclaim that Dwight is the Rock of the NBA. Pau you need to grow a pair and get into the paint and battle man. You letting Amare and lopez punk you. Where is the pride Lakers, how can you allow a marshmellow team like the Suns average about 110 a game. Kobe you are my boy but if you want to be like MJ you need to man up. I don't think Jordan would have allowed this Suns team to average 110 ppg against him. yeah Kobe you have the moves and the scoring ability but what happen to jordan's defensive pressure. He would have harrassed nash or Dragic to no end. Man Kobe you let their scrub players outscore yall when you were on the court. The last 4 games was not MJ like Kobe. And you know it.

The WCF isn't suppose to be some shooting contest Kobe. Shooting contest is for the regular season. Championship teams play tough defense. You are suppose to get into Gasoft's ear and chew him out when he is playing uninspired ball. You are suppose to direct your teammates to get in the right positions. look at rondo he orders the Big 3 around and future hall of famers like they are his kids. kobe I expect you to lead the way for your softy sidekick. You know Phil is so laid back so you have to get it done. Yeah you have some big offensive games but still getting beat by double digits.

Mark Medina

i commend you for FINALLY hitting the nail in the head and exposing the GASOL - FISHER POLITICS that started as soon as the Gasol Memphis speech aired.

it started to be a rapture at that moment. and PJ supported that.

as you go back to the Live Chat of the Game 4, at every situation/play you mentioned above i was screaming, yes, in CAPS:

FISHER - GASOL politics

if the Lakers r not winning the championship this year, these 2 r culpable.

and to a lesser degree UPS and Farmar.

from the moment PJ said that other people should take away the BALL from KOBE's hands, these 2 and the "scrub 2" decided that they can win by themselves. they r just a bunch of losers and their CLUTCH-NESS is NONE. there is also a post on Screen and Roll that details how except Kobe, no one on the team is clutch.

Mark Medina

great post, but i do not agree with this:

"When I asked Gasol if a better effort should've been made for Bryant to get more looks when he had him, it appeared he didn't want to come across criticizing Bryant considering the work he put in Game 4."

how come he DID NOT WANT TO CRITICIZE bryant when actually he had to talk about HIS SHORTCOMINGS?

this blog sucks. full of trolls when the team lost...

when lakers become champions, please, go away

"I don't know," Gasol said. "He obviously shot the ball extremely well last night. He also made big plays as far as assisting. It was a great game on his part. Unfortunately we couldn't capitalize in it and make it a better chance for us to win the ball game. I don't know if he could've taken any more shots. When that happens, we have to understand that we have to be aggressive."

----------------------------------------------------------------

REALLY GASOL, WHAT A PUNK AND JERK

"I don't know," - of course you don't because you ALWAYS have to point fingers at someone else on the team to deflect your own responsibilities.

---------

"He obviously shot the ball extremely well last night." SOOOOOOOOOOO??????
-----------

"He also made big plays as far as assisting." Actually, YOU PUNK are surviving making spectacular plays when Kobe is serving you the ball on the platter.

--------------------------

"It was a great game on his part." really? i did not know that we have to have, or more exactly Kobe has to have your blessing that he had a great game

------------------

"Unfortunately we couldn't capitalize in it and make it a better chance for us to win the ball game." - i'm wondering why?

---------------------

" I don't know if he could've taken any more shots."

whowwwwwwwwwww.

Pau Gasol is DECIDING how many shots KOBE CAN TAKE?

does Kobe have a RATIO of how many shots he should take??????????????

is PAU GASOL in CHARGE of the number of shots?
is FISHER the accountant? maybe he should sit his butt on the bench and take over the clipboard.

ALVIN GENTRY and the media is totally delusional that they stopped Kobe in the 4th quarter. indeed they doubled and tripled him, but as any one watching the game again ONE CAN SEE that basically Kobe did not touch the ball.

even the commentators mentioned how he scored ONLY with 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

of course, after the GASOL - FISHER POLITICS followed the UPS-FARMAR missed shots, they started to give the ball to Kobe to SAVE them.

at the end of the game after their BB IMPOTENCE, INCOMPETENCE and NO-solution and resolve totally failed and the difference in the Game got to -11, they looked for the real solution: KOBE the SAVIOR.

MARK MEDINA

because you finally hit the nail in the head let's go back to GAME 3 and see what happened in the first half:

exactly the same GASOL - FISHER politics:

i will just mention 2 plays that are exactly like the ones above in the Game 4. i'm sure re-watching the game, will be more. i do not have it recorded and i'm tired of watching JUST what these 2 punks do.

but there r 2 obvious plays

1. Gasol has the ball in the post on the left side. KOBE is by himself almost a few feet from him. he passes the ball across to Fisher who misses a 3.

2. smae scenario with Gasol with the ball and Kobe alone on the same left side of the court. LO is cutting through the paint but there r 1000 of hand in the path of the pass. Gasol still makes the pass, ignoring Kobe. LO fumbles the ball and goes out of bound. Phoenix possession. it was not LO's fault. it was an UN-NECESSARY PASS, he was not available, being well defended.
----------------

at the moment when these 2 sequences happened, Kobe was having a hot hand. and if you look at his stats, HE NEEDED TO BE THE ACTIVATOR. the team was in a terrible shooting funk. but hey, why do i even have to bother to write about it? the results are there. there where 2 losses against the GIRLY ZONE.

the Phoenix has confidence

the Phoenix scrubs started to make lots of 3's

the Lakers came back 2-2

PJ was watching this sharade

FISHER and especially GASOL are sabotaging the team and the Lakers success. maybe they r not conscious about how far this go, but the results r not pretty.

this is DAMAGING

and both of them r hiding because they r the darling of the media and they can't do wrong. and of course, there is always the scapegoat, KOBE who will take the blame.

wake up Lakers fans and Lakers Nation. Rome is burning. and PJ is watching.

MARK MEDINA

i'm really great full that you brought these issues up, even if it was reference to one game and some plays. i know that if i mention these things, my opinions r not popular when is referenced to Gasol. i do not have an agenda. i want the lakers to win as the next blogger. but i can sit watching it and get on bandwagons and say that they r nice human beings. THEY R NOT.

i hope the bloggers will pay attention to what you wrote. because you tell the TRUTH. :-)

PLAY LIKE A TEAM?

how about think like a team. how about knowing what the team's forte is and maximizing on the strengths.

THIS IS NOT DEMOCRACY and sharing the wealth. it is CAPITALISM and it is about winning. there is only one trophy. and only one parade. make sure it is happening in your town.

IGNORING the best player ever when he shoots the light out and makes all the plays for the team is just beyond STUPID and MORONIC. it is CATASTROPHIC.

Blah, blah, blah! They lost, it's not that complicated.

FISHER - GASOL politics

if the Lakers r not winning the championship this year, these 2 r culpable.

and to a lesser degree UPS and Farmar.

Are you serious?? Gasol and Fisher conspiring against Kobe? That's absolutely insane. Calm down, and realize that (1) the Lakers absolutely failed to get the defensive rebounds, which to me is the fault of Odom, Gasol, and Bynum, (2) the role players, besides Artest, utterly failed in every way they could have failed, (3) Gasol's great play on Amare in games 1 and 2 has gone the way of the Dodo bird, and (4) the Lakers D in general has been atrocious in all 4 games. There's no political conspiracy - you are just showing your youth and ignorance.

ouchhhhhhhh - Woah somebody pinch me. You actually like what I have to write? I don't mean to spoil the moment because this truly is monumental, but I don't believe Fisher and Gasol have any ill will toward Kobe. This came down to just a flaw in execution. As I detail in this post, Phoenix pretty much gave Kobe no space to work with, so part of that served as a reason why he didn't get shots. But you do combine that with the fact that Kobe was passed up on a few possessions. Again I don't think it was anything personal or intentional. But it was a mistake. And since little else was working in Game 4, I could only imagine the affect the outcome would be had Kobe had a few more looks and prevented some potential baskets Phoenix scored on the other end.

MM

it is not about conspiracy

it is about POWER control on the team. let's keep it to that for now. but if u really need more to support my case i will be happy to explain.

This is not the first time you have been in this predicament where you threaten other bloggers then go hide for few days, sulk and then come back like whimpering kid apologizing.

I see a pattern with you and perhaps deep rooted problem.

President Obama have fixed the new Laker situation. Pau Gasol is the new commander in Chief in Lakerland. We have and new leader, the best player in the entire NBA. Never a President a pointed over a player as Mr. President Obama did about Pau Gasol.

Who´s the best Laker player all times fixed for a President of USA?

Kareem, no
Shaq, no
Magic, no
Kobe, no
PAU GASOLLLLLL, THE NEW LEADER

MM,

I thought you banned Ricky.

you probably banned his IP. I suspect he's using an internet cafe.

There's another way to do this ...

Wow, whats a Jesus Santos and where's the bias hispanic mesage about refusing to speak English. As for running away, i leave the blog usually about the same everyday. As for running away, what woudl I run from are you suppose to be a threat. brother let me tell you something, ibeen threatened by real men. Gangsters, Iraqis, Crips, Disciples, BlackstoneRangers so why would i be threaten by a little child like you that can only be a big man by being on an anonomous website(Which really isn't) go away little boy. Come back when you a man. As for whimpering Kid, that's what your moma told me last night
about you when you finished servicing me punk. Not take your lil immature kiddy self alone. Also don't forget the passport and refuse to speak english line
I bet real Hispanics really dig that BOY!

It's a BRAND NEW DAY CREW - IT'S GAME DAY!!!!

@ Jesus Santos - Dude.. no need to start this all back up man...

@ Mamba - No need to say anything... That was, like, so yesterday...

@ Orlando Magic - THANK YOU!

The only thing missing from last nights game was Chris Tucker running on to the court standing over Big Baby and saying:

"DAAAMMNN, YOU GOT KNOCKED THE EFF OUT, MAAAAAANNNNN!!!

So ....

long, long ago, [ a few months actually ]

I told y'all that Pau & D-Fish had thrown Kobe under the bus.
I told y'all that Pau had a big head from winning the Euro championship.

The play of game 4 & moving away from Kobe highlights those issues.

FYI, I am not saying that Pau or D-Fish played poorly. What I am saying
is that Pau refuses to acknowledge when he doesn't make the right plays.
What I am saying is that Pau is not giving Kobe his props as being a singular
talent.

[note: the bench shot like scrubs. ]

[note: our defense sucked! ]

mamba, you could have left that line out. Hey dude, I'm on your side. Just ignore those guys, they're trying their hardest to get at you.

Go Lakers!

Hey Jesus, I have a question:

Is possible that Mark Medina and Mamba24 are the same person?????

To Hobbit,,

No MF, I using the computer in me beautiful house near the beach. Right now, 16:38 h. in Barcelona, sun, heat, and coffe in me table, i´m tired after working, and I hope we can have a happy and enterteining afternoon all togethers.

Good Morning Crew!

Hey Mamba24! I think we're all ready for tonight's game. Like Rick, I'm sippin on my coffee while I read this great analysis by MM. But I think it comes down to executing the triangle properly. They kept passing the ball around and settling for a jump shot. Play the triangle offense, start cutting, and Kobe will find you, he'll pass the ball and any of the 4 guys on the floor can make an easy lay up or dunk it! That's my take.

I'm ready for tonight's game. Let's get this W!!!

DAMMN! Now Ricky calling HobbitMage a MF this boy has serious problems. But I guess if he's called on it he'll say he thought MF meant MY Friend.
Mamba24

Ouucchhhhhhh,

Please don't describe Jon K and Justa as suck ups. They just have a different style and worldview. The Universe requires balance. Not everybody gets you, either.

That said, I pretty much agree with everything you ranted about, above. Gasol's smugness and refusal to accept accountability in his statements to the media are a great irritant.

I'm also perturbed by all of the "What, me worry?" statements, no matter who said them. Steve's points 1-4 above are so right on, I'm just going to repeat them:

(1) the Lakers absolutely failed to get the defensive rebounds, which to me is the fault of Odom, Gasol, and Bynum, (2) the role players, besides Artest, utterly failed in every way they could have failed, (3) Gasol's great play on Amare in games 1 and 2 has gone the way of the Dodo bird, and (4) the Lakers D in general has been atrocious in all 4 games.

As much as I've tried to deny it in my fandom, these are still the same old Lakers. Except for Kobe, they refuse to give an extra bead of sweat more than they think they need, instead of finding the inner focus of killer instinct. When they come up against opponents who find their own killer instinct, the Lakers fall short.

Tonight it's time for PJ to unleash Sasha and Mbenga. They have their imperfections but they play with heart and intensity. I know the rest of our bench has had their butts kicked, but part of that is that they've had their confidence crushed by PJ's coaching style. Farmar and UPS have been failing not because of lack of talent but because of lack of mojo. One of Gentry's strengths is that he's convinced his bench he truly believes in them.

Lamar and Gasol better have their game faces on tonight. Bynum needs a shot of espresso so he can stay alert.

I'll end this rant now. I'm still out of my mind about Game 4. I need a solid Lakers effort in Game 5, or I'll be headed straight to the looney bin.

I'm ready for tonight's game. Let's get this W!!! Posted by: J24 | May 27, 2010 at 07:41 AM

No Ricky, I'm not.

Dude.

I wake up to a blog full of anger and hate. It's one thing if you're putting that towards the Celtics (THEY LOST WHOOOHOOOOOOOOO) and PHX, but towards the team? C'mon. Fisher and Kobe are tight team mates. There's no way that's going on here. And in terms of Pau, they're also tight. Ridiculous to hear all the hate.

In the words of Tex Winter - the triangle is meant to beat the zone. Ok, now would be a good time to get back to basics. These guys are like the 2000 Lakers, they pretend to run it, difference being that team was more talented.

I have a feeling: Mark Medina have a mental problem of "Multipersonality" in this blog. I Think he is Lakertom, HobbitMage and others "all in one", and i´am the only one that write in this blog out of LATIMES professional writers. Ye, sir, I Know, is me paranoic mentality working again. Well, is necessary be a paranoic for write here about BB, about Lakers, about Pau, and from Spain. Absolully paranoic, I know.

MM,

Thank you so much for this particular break-down. Since I can see the games, write-ups like this serve me very well. Spiro and Mychal did a good job of outlining every time Kobe was open in the fourth and didn't get the ball. I actually like the fact that Mychal was a role-player on two championship teams, because he says the things that we hope our current role-players are thinking -- even when it is clear they are not.

For instance, Mychal is a proponent of team mates riding the hot hand. When Fish is hot, he sees no reason for everyone else clanging shots off the front of the rim. When Pau is rolling, dump the ball into him every single possession. When Andrew is active, why is anyone else shooting? Stuff like that. But, especially in the last game, Mychal was beside himself when watching the Lakers go away from Kobe when it was clear he couldn't miss. He pointed out that those open looks that Kobe never got usually came after Kobe had already given up the ball and the Lakers had run through all of the Suns defensive assignments. If the Lakers had just displayed the patience to make just one more pass, to the aforementioned wide open Kobe, in just a couple of plays the Lakers could have broken their spirit.

The moral is: Imagine if the Suns had sprung this "new" and "advanced" defensive scheme on the Lakers in the 4th (which they did), and the Lakers quickly responded and countered by being patient, managing to still give the ball to Kobe in his Kill Zone (which on that night was any part of the arena with a wooden floor), and have Kobe *still* execute? The task ahead would have appeared impossible. And Kobe would have appeared even more super-human.

Could you imagine the cyber-talk after that game? Kobe scores umpteen points in fourth quarter in the face of the Sun's D focusing on him! Kobe would be the new Superman, and PJ would be seen as a genius. And, every other Lakers player would been seen as smarter through association. We'd be talking about how "heady" the Lakers are. Their BBall IQ, and all that jazz.

At any rate, MM, your post allows me to "see" the fourth and sort of reinforce what I thought was happening.

The Suns are going to spring this D on us again. You can bet on that. But, now that they have confidence in it (which is more dangerous in the playoffs than giving a team confidence in its offense), they may try to adjust it to nullify whatever Laker gets hot tonight in the fourth. Remember, this is a home game, the potential for a Laker not named Kobe having a big night is large.

Keep 'em coming, MM.

--FEARless

Listen man its Pau gasoft who plays soft and doen't take responsibility for it. Gasoft needs to leave the perimiter for fisher and Bryant and get his soft ass into the paint where he belongs. I give Bynum a pass because he is injured. Nothing is wrong with Gasoft except his manhood. I am sending a tape of last night's game to Gasoft of Howard play and delivering the People's Elbow on Davis who mocked and ridiculed him.

Could you imagine the cyber-talk after that game? Kobe scores umpteen points in fourth quarter in the face of the Sun's D focusing on him! The only thing missing from last nights game was Chris Tucker running on to the court standing over Big Baby and saying:

I was thinking the EXACT SAME THING!

--FEARless

REPOST: Why? Well, because it's GAME DAY and I wanted to.

LAKERS IN 6!

Kobe: Nothing to complain about you just keep doin' what your doin'.

Pau: Same for you... maybe try a little harder at grabbing rebounds.

Fish: Continue to play strong, fighting thru those screens and staying IN FRONT of Nash as much as possible, but lay off the "reach ins" the refs will NEVER give you the benefit of the doubt. Oh yeah, remember, YOU ARE MR. CLUTCH pt II!!!

Artest: "If the Lakers don't win the Finals, then you can blame me, I'm the only thing that has changed here.." Rembember, YOU said that. We LOVED Ariza but we can LOVE YOU TOO! Bring that HUNGER and DESIRE that you profess to have regarding winning your first Ring. Show us ALL why you make THIS team so TOUGH!!!

Bynum: PROVE US WRONG about how we perceive your COMMITMENT to WIN injured or not. GET ANGRY!!! PLAY ANGRY!!!! PLAY LIKE YOU WANT TO WIN AND BE THE ALL-STAR THAT YOU SAID YOU WANTED TO BE AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS YEAR!!!!!

Odom: You are a STARTER in BENCH clothing. You ARE THE X FACTOR! Do whatever it takes to MOTIVATE yourself. Hell, pretend like you don't have a Ring and this is your last and only chance to get one! SLASH TO THE RIM!!! I dub thee MR.SQUEEGEE, time for you to CLEAN the GLASS!!!! I expect a Double Double (and NOT the one from In N Out) every night from here on out!!

Farmar: I know you don't get the kinda minutes that you want, but put that aside... you NEED to play like you did at UCLA... Get in there, mix it up, show NO FEAR driving to the lane. I stated before that I wish we had a player that could play like Drgic and YOU CAN BE THAT PLAYER!!! We've seen flashes of it.

Brown: Same goes for you buddy.. with your HOPS you should constantly be driving to the hole, draw fouls, try to dunk on EVERY opportunity. Stop with the mid range pull up shots, that NOT you and you are NOT Kobe.

Sasha: Whatever you did to PISS off Phil, you better try and fix it. And if/when PJ puts you in the game, PESTER the ISH outta NASH or whoever they put you on!

DJ: You'll get your chance... SOON.

Josh: Not much to say other than I hope PJ gives you a few more minutes.

ouchhhhhhhh - lol. i'm just messing around man.

MM

I am sending a tape of last night's game to Gasoft of Howard play and delivering the People's Elbow on Davis who mocked and ridiculed him. Posted by: island priest | May 27, 2010 at 08:03 AM

Priest, i doubt if Davis knows who he is today they say he suffered a concussion. But I gues that's the end of that mocking,
Mamba24

I saw a play of howard when the magic did miss a shot and the Cs quickly got the ball to Rondo who raced up the court. Howard put his head down and roared up the court and sent Rondo's shot sailing the other way. That's a real big man. Gasoft needs to man up.

Josh: Not much to say other than I hope PJ gives you a few more minutes. Posted by: HalosAnt | May 27, 2010 at 08:05 AM
Now see you people are doing it again...I have to say it...OUT FREAKIN STANDING!!
Mamba24

@ Island priest:

The WCF isn't suppose to be some shooting contest Kobe. Shooting contest is for the regular season. Championship teams play tough defense. You are suppose to get into Gasoft's ear and chew him out when he is playing uninspired ball. You are suppose to direct your teammates to get in the right positions. look at rondo he orders the Big 3 around and future hall of famers like they are his kids. kobe I expect you to lead the way for your softy sidekick. You know Phil is so laid back so you have to get it done. Yeah you have some big offensive games but still getting beat by double digits.

__________________________________________

Dude, did you not actually watch the last game? Did you not see Kobe get in everyone's ear and face who blew a defensive assignment? Did you not see Kobe rotating like mad, making defensive plays and bailing out his team mates over and over -- to no avail? Kobe was the one poking all those balls away, Dude. He disrupted shots and harassed shooters. The Suns's shots were just dropping anyway. There is no way one guy can defend against the whole team. his mates let him down that game.

Kobe was everywhere. Without Kobe, the Suns would have scored 130 easily.

Pay attention to the game. There are times when you can't stop an offensive minded team. Especially once you let them get on a roll. When that time comes, you have to outscore them. The Lakers didn't go to the well. Game over.

--FEARless

The first thing I thought of this morning, seconds after waking up, was GAME DAY!!! The second thing I thought was BOSTON LOST!!!!!!

I would like to clarify that I NEVER want a player to be seriously injured. When Glen Davis couldn't get up I was immediately concerned for his well being. And believe me, I hate him as a Celtic. But as a human being I didn't want him to be hurt. Same with the other guy (just can't remember his name right now.) I wish them a speedy recovery. I also thought the second tech on Perkins was a joke. That being said, it still made my night. In terms of basketball, I hate him. I love the fact that he might be out for the next game, because I just hate the Celtics. To me, he's almost on par with Kevin McHale. But not quite. I also gleefully rejoiced when 'Sheed was tossed, but again, to clarify, I do not rejoice in his injury. I just can't. People getting seriously hurt is not anything I could ever smack talk about or rejoice in. It's offensive on a whole other level.

I am a little worried that this whole tech thing might blow up in our faces, but at the same time, maybe it'll help with avoiding it. I mean, if they call a lousy tech for that, then what might they do to us? Not consumed by this, though.

GAME DAY!!!! I just happened to work in a place where we are ALL Laker fans. Even the doc I work for is a huge fan, and this place is buzzing with basketball talk ALL the time. It's here I met the nephew of the 24 shot clock guy, and he gets us on the floor or pretty darn close, for Laker games. All Lakers, all the time, baby.

GO LAKERS!!!

I can't stop thinking about last nights game... was it a Basketball game or Pay-Per-View Event??? Hahahaha!

Dwight "Debo" Howard was droppin' them 'bows... He's the Ultimate Eastern Confernce Fighter... somewhere Dana White was smiling.

island priest,

Are you a Magic fan? 'Cause you sound like it.

Let's see, morning coffee...check. Pants first, the shoes...check. Drop by LAT Laker Blog...check.

Hmmm. Something's missing? Mmmm!

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMME DAY!

Ahh, that's beter! C'mon Laker Blog, enough with the petty bickering at each other, we gots to beat the Suns y'all! We gotta play tougher than the,. we gotta tighten it up on D, and we absolutely have to stick to the team game.

Lotta folks eem to think Kobe could have single-handedly pulled the Lakers fat out of the fire. Although it's possible, it's now water under the brdige. I bridge I don't want to see spanning troubled waters, so we need to set our sights on punishing the zone.

We didn't lose this game not for lack of putting the ball in our basket, we lost it because we couldn't defend theirs. We lost because we allowed Barbosa AND Dragic AND Dudley AND Amundson AND Frye to have impact games. The team defense failed us more than any other factor.

So we need Staples rocking with the DEEEE-FENSE! chants tonight. We need to be louder than loud, fiercer than fierce and we need to punch the upstart gangster 'round the corner back before they think they can hone in on our territory, that being the NBA Finals. Two games and we're their. Let's be the first to two, then, shall we?

Who's with me?

More morning coffe, please, that post is fraught with grammatical and missplelled/typed words.

weak.

Listen Fearless the Priest doen't except mediocrity. Kobe should have been complaining after games 1 and 2 after allowing the Suns to score 110 ppg. He didn't say anything. The Suns scored almost the same ppg in the wins and now he is compalianing? There is now way that the Suns should be allowed to score over 100 points every game. that is pathetic and not championship ball. No one asked the lakers about their porous defense except the Priest.

President Obama said: Pau Gasol is the NBA best player all times. I think that President Obama want Pau Gasol as MVP finals. He deserve it.

Damn...is this what the thread has come to?! Ya'll kinda wild today.

Here's the bottom line, the Lakers won two games. Phoenix made adjustments. Now, it's time for the Lakers to do the same in return.

It's not about Pau hating Kobe hating Fisher hating Phil.

Defense, rebounding and hustle. That's the necessary adjustment.

So...we'll see how tonight plays out

Two games and we're their. Let's be the first to two, then, shall we?

SO SAY WE ALL! YESSSSSSSSS!
MAMBA24

I certainly hope (and assume) the Lakers aren't like the fans on this blog. Lose a couple of games and the knives come out. Name calling - aimed at our own players. Everybody on the team needs to be traded because they suck. Every innocent word out of Gasol's mouth is interpreted as some sort of dis on Kobe, when he actually praising Kobe's game. Posts pit player against player.

A bunch of crap. It's tough to win an NBA title folks. They don't just hand them out. You lose a game or two. And when you do, you have to pull together, not attack each other.

A bunch of crap. If you can't enjoy watching this team battle for a title, you have unreasonable expectations. I've been watching the NBA since the sixties. Even the best teams ever - Russell's Celts, Kareem and Magic's Lakers, Jordan's Bulls - lost plenty of games and had to battle just to get to the Finals.

That's the way it is. If you can't handle that other teams will outplay yours some nights, it ain't gonna be much fun.

Contrary to popular belief, "no man is an island seperate unto himself." Kobe is not a god.

longtimelakerlover

u r totally naive.

Fisher and Kobe's buzzer -beaters this season.

after the Miami one, Fish was very happy, of course the victory.

i do not remember after the 2nd one

but after the 3rd buzzer-beater Fish did not smile. was not happy. neither after the following ones

----------------------------

u see, Fisher has no qualities as a BB player. he will not fit ANY OTHER TEAM. i'm not even talking about starting.

his ONLY quality is that he can make spot up shots and yes sometimes he can be fearless. IF he is served on a platter. we know how that NOT ended when he HAD to create the last shot and the winner. also he rode Kobe's tail all his career.

BY KOBE HITTING ALL THOOSE BUZZER BEATERS, he took away Fisher's ONLY lunch and only rights to BRAG.

also at this moment Fisher HAS TO SHOW A LOT because he is fighting for MAYBE his last contract and obviously he wants to be part of this winning group. so for him it is personal. he also is smart enough, saw Kobe enough to realize that Kobe is tearing up the BB court and he is playing out of his mind

did they had the right to criticize him during his period when he was shooting too much and being hurt. YES.

but finally when he is back healthy again. NO

also Fisher allied with the delusional Pau Gasol who bought into the media hype regarding his play. a campaign that fluffed LBJ against KOBE. LBJ is not in the picture as a player in the playoffs so what is left, Gasol. before Gasol, if you remember it was LO. the LO thing did not work out so, who's next.

and all that was an opportunity for Fisher after the Memphis game and the Gasol speech.

by the way, a few days ago, responding to a press question regarding BYNUM, Fisher said:

"I'm not really into the business of singling OUT guys. what they did or not"

but, he did singled out KOBE after the Memphis game in alliance with Gasol. they did that exactly when Kobe become the highest scorer as a Laker. and Gasol went on after a catastrophic performance series in the 8 game road trip where he chocked in Clevaland, toronto and memphis to say: Let's go back to TEAM game, winning and TOUCHES.

----------------------------------------------------

let me ogive u a small detail that many did not pay attention

after the memphis game, with the first victory in LA, PJ became the winningest coach in the history of the Lakers. at the end of the game, Gasol went to PJ and started to congratulate him

what i found perfectly normal

but that moment started to be so LONG and so SUCK up that even STU LANTZ pointed it out that it does not look kosher.

get it??????????????????

If Obama said that Gasoft is the best player or big man he should be impeached. How is Gasoft better than Dirk Nowinski? The only time he is better than Nowinski is when he gets his soft ass in the paint.

justanothermambafan reporting for duty SIR!

I'm still pissed about game 4, but now my focus shifts to game 5. The name of this game is not "adjustments". The name of this game is "stick it to the Suns so hard and so fast they won't know what the hell hit them and they'll cry all the way back to Phoenix screaming for their mamas to rescue them from the big bad Lakers".

Yeah. That's the name of THIS game.

I want to see FIRE. I want to see FOCUS. But most of all I want to see some fricken DEFENSE. Let's have a 48 minute game of balls to the wall, hard nosed, hard fouling DEFENSE.

And if the crowd isn't LOUD, I'm gonna join Jon K on El Segundo and some necks are gonna get punched. (By him - not me - I'm too delicate).

It only goes to show that he can't read. Oh, well.

And no. I am not against spaniards in anyway. Even if the folk in Barcelona
do talk funny. :)

If you can't stop Phoenix Kobe you might as well be a water fowl snake. Plus I am calling out Gasoft. Put on your hard hat man. Phil get control off your team for Pete's sake. You are so right about the cowards. You can tell by their wordings (negativity) that they were bullied when they were kids and now thanks to the internet they can be whoever they want. LOL.

Who´s better, Pau Gasol or Dirk Nowitzky

Dirk Nowitzky.

Great shooter, poor defender, poor BB IQ, poor leadership, poor rebounding and 0 RINGS.

Pau Gasol:

Great shooter, good defender, superb BB IQ, great leadership, great rebounding, 1 world Championship and MVP, 1 European Championship and MVP , 1 silver medal at olimpics and, of course, 1 RING.

Answer: PAU GASOL.

President Obama is O.K.

@Hobbitmage, I know I should not say this because yall gone think but...I think Ricky is an AI. I'll say no more
Mamba24

Laker fan-

I would like to reiterate my inital preditiction ... Celtics in 6!

Fearless

u lost at one point:

IF KOBE play super human, PJ DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A GENIUS (u said yes)

PJ looks like a genius only when the TEAM plays TOUCHY TOUCHY

when the TEAM plays KOBE BANG BANG, PJ looks like the coach that was bailed out by MJ, S+K and KOBE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

think again

that's why PJ supports Gassy and Fishy.

if they win, he looks like PJ x 11

if they lose and Kobe shot too much, PJ has a scapegoat!!!!!!!!

the most un-coachable player ever.

I want the Lakers to crush the Suns man. That doesn't mean La 125 and the Suns 110. That means La 105 and the suns 88 or 90. Kobe if you want to be like Mike get this done.

Island Priest,
You posted "Listen Fearless the Priest doen't except mediocrity." You spelled "accept" correctly but it's the wrong word. FYI

Gasol is a scorer, much like a 4 than a 5. He can shoot free throws, have excellent footwork in the paint, good passer, and yes have flaws like he's "soft" but that comes with territory.
I can say Howard is a great rebounder, excellent finisher, good shot blocker but...no outside shot, bad free throw shooter, average passer.

It's comparing apples and oranges.

From the LAT: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-lakers-20100527,0,3033960.story

Gasol was peeved that the Lakers were banged around so badly on the boards, failing to box out the smaller, more slippery Suns.

"When a team that is definitely smaller than you dominates the glass with 15 rebounds of differential, I think that's the biggest thing of [Tuesday] night's game," said Gasol, who had only five rebounds in Game 4.

my response: Do you hear/read Gasol saying *I* need to do a better job?
Have you *EVER* heard/read about Gasol saying *I* need to do a better job?

mamba24,

you wrote: I think Ricky is an AI. I'll say no more

What is "AI"????? Artificial Intelligence?????? Allien Ingelligence?????. Yess, i´m a Allien from Barcelona, for you, Spain, a Country in Europe, near France and Italy, and, of course, a Allien. It would appear.

{Secret Agent Report}

So, I once again infiltrated my local coven of LeBroniacs last night.

Here's the full story with LeZero and the Cavs collapse...

So, yes, Delonte West was sleeping with Gloria James for several weeks.

Here's the thing and the core root of the problem (I know this may sound like a no-brainer): The whole team knew and for a while... except LeBron James. So, the issue wasn't just that Delonte West was sleeping with LeBron's mother, it's that LeBron found out about it before Game Four AND found out that everyone else knew, but didn't have the guts to tell him.

So, if I was LeZero, I'd be pretty pissed off too. Not only is my teammate screwing my mother, but all my friends didn't take the time to tell me about it.

Anyhow, in typical LeZero fashion after not showing up for Game Four, LeBron reported ripped into Mike Brown attacking his ability as a coach and his substitutions. [Translation: "Why the heck didn't you tell me that bi-polar lunatic was screwing my mom?"]

In response, Shaq, Mo Williams, and Iglauskas all stood up for Mike Brown. LeBron wasn't happy about this.

The result? Collapses in Games Five and Six of the playoffs. And afterwards, Mike Brown was fired.

So, there it is. Now local bookies are pretty much putting LeBron's likelihood of staying to be about 4 to 1, because if he did stay, the entire team would have to be metaphorically blown up. LeBron doesn't want to play with these players.

This also raises the question, "Why DIDN'T LeBron's teammates tell him about Delonte and his mom?"

You'd think they'd might.

Were they worried that it would hurt team chemistry and screw up their chances to get home court advantage and/or win in the playoffs?

Were they "scared" of LeBron's potential response?

Did they despite all the smiles and joking around not actually like and/or respect LeBron James enough to want to tell him in the first place?

Could it be some combination of the three?

Probably.

Anyhow, it is all too crazy and logical to be anything but the perfectly ironic Cleveland ending to an imbalanced obsessive fawning adoration for a local celebrity.

After being told this story by a few LeBroniacs as the Celtics/Magic game was on, one of them turned to me and said, "Did you see the interview with Kobe after Game Four?"

I had not.

"IT WAS AWESOME! HE WAS SO ANGRY! That's what we need!"

We then discussed how Kobe was going to take Shannon Brown and Jordan Farmar into a small darkened room and whip them repeatedly with an electrical cord for not showing up in Game Four and how we approved of Kobe's actions.

Yeah...

Anyhow, it is game day.

Time to start playing defense like men.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Actually, Jesus, people like you really suck. YOU and people like YOU are a big reason we have so many problems in society and so many stupid rules.

Why? Because these rules are in effect just to keep losers like you in check.

The truth of the matter is that the overwhelming majority of people on this blog enjoy Mamba24's posts, his enthusiasm, his energy, and his creativity.

I will say with complete confidence that on a daily basis Mamba24's posts bring a smile to the face of at least a thousand people.

While you will NEVER be able to accomplish that because you are just not that person nor are you gifted in that sense.

As a result, out of pure envy, you attempt to belittle a person of greater talent than yourself.

I call such people true "Haters" and, as a result, people of your ilk are the ultimate "problem" in society.

I hope you sleep well with that realization in your mind.
