Andrew Bynum says he has no regrets in putting off surgery

Lakers center Andrew Bynum shares your cynicism. When he learned he had torn cartilage in his right knee before the Lakers' Western Conference semifinal series against Utah, he became aware that eventually surgery would be required. He couldn't help but remember how long of a process it took for him to bounce back from previous injuries.

He missed 46 games in the 2007-08 season as well as the entire postseason because of a left-knee injury. He had also missed 32 games last season because of a right-knee injury. And he wondered how long he'd actually be out this year had he opted for surgery.

"They said I could do surgery now, but I said I didn't know how long it would take to get my strength back," Bynum said. "That takes time. I've been through that. You keep making promises and then people get anxious and wonder why you're not coming back early enough. I wanted to avoid that and just play and take care of it when I have the time."

As a person who has had three athletic-related knee surgeries, Andrew just play through the pain!

It can be done, you just have to let the adrenaline take over.

We're going to need Andrew.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Hey MM -

WE WANT A CHAT!!

WE WANT A CHAT!!

:)

The Celtics sure play great defense.

I'm not sure how to beat it.

They're clearly going to try to force double-teams on Rondo penetrating to create open opportunities.

Hmmm... but they don't have a Kobe stopper and WILL have to double-team him.

Again, it's going to be REAL important that Thriller and Derek make their shots. That'll be key.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Justa - we'll have a chat Monday. I didn't want to do one today because I wasn't sure when practice was going to get out and then how long it would take to drive home to get in time for the game.

MM

MM - no chat for the game tomorrow???

Or was that a typo?

now, that was really important. who cares about his whining.

what a lame excuse MM

Ok - bynum is needed for this years playoffs but next year either trade him or save him strictly for the playoffs.

Bosh wants to come to LA - there must be some package mitch can come up with to bring him to the lakers.

whowwwwwwwww

JJ Redick calling TO on the floor with 25 down

what did he do at the end of Game 3 when he had to CALL the TO. what a …

ouchhhhhh - is your sarcasm font broken? Cuz it sure seems like you should have it on.....

I said before that Mbenga was offensively unskilled that's why he's not getting PT. I've been proven wrong. An offensively unskilled player can get meaningful minutes. Just take a look at DHoward. Its either a dunk or his patented ugliest jumphook in the history of basketball. The guy can't even dribble! Betcha if he took the ASG skills challenge he'll be there for 2 days. At least Mbenga has a jumpshot.

So for you Jon Kavulic- Mbenga! Mbenga! Mbenga!

magic fans should be embarrassed.. no fight in them.. just bending over and still a whole half to play.

somewhere in the republic of turkey hedo turkoglu must be really enjoying his day.... or night??

p ang,

I like Mbenga on a lot of levels.

I think of him as a similar player as Kwame Brown, a player I also like: Defensively gifted; offensively challenged. Kwame has better overall offensive skills, but turns the ball over far more than Mbenga. Mbenga is a better shot blocker.

I think we should give Mbenga more minutes. I plays hard. Is strong. Wears down big opponents who use their size to bully smaller opponents.

I'd love to see Mbenga do a judo sweep on Big Baby and there's no reason to think it won't happen.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

GO LAKERS!!!

yellowfever,

magic fans shouldn't be embarrassed - they are just like us laker fans - love their team but we have no control over the team's play. the fricking orlando magic PLAYERS should be totally embarrassed though. can't believe that they have absolutely no fight in them.

i think we all know how the magic fans must feel. lakers played a lot of games like this too. luckily, after the thunder gave them a beatdown the lakers responded and have been playing great bball.

I think that to beat the Celtics, you've got to take the ball strong to the hole. No cute moves. Try to finish strong every time. They have no shot blockers. Their defense is strong but at the rim, they can only give hard fouls. A team has to be able to play through that.

Rich,

"Bosh wants to come to LA - there must be some package mitch can come up with to bring him to the lakers."

I already wrote a post about this.

I like Chris Bosh. He IS more talented than Andrew Bynum. But he is not a better fit than Andrew Bynum when we already have Gasol and Kobe here.

"I think that to beat the Celtics, you've got to take the ball strong to the hole. No cute moves. Try to finish strong every time. They have no shot blockers. Their defense is strong but at the rim, they can only give hard fouls."

So, Andrew and Pau's role becomes THAT much more important.

Hmmm...

Clearly we're going to have to leave blood on the tracks in this series. They can be beat with finesse, but not finesse alone.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

It is so appropriate that Rasheed Wallace is a Celtic now.

I am currently suffering from a "frayed" meniscus and can only get around with the use of a walker. I don't know how Andrew can run up and down the floor let alone jump. Lets give the guy some pluses for trying to help the team.

Jack

MM - oh - duh - of course - thanks!

"Crap" doesn't even begin to describe the level of ineptitude and stanky play we've been witness to tonight....

Laker North,

Frayed meniscus is completely different from a tiny tear. It's a lot different.

Laker North...

I hear you. I hope things get better for you. I think that we sometimes take our athletes for granted and forget just how much it takes for them to perform at such high levels.

Jon K...sorry I missed your post. I also realize that a team needs balance. You being a UCLA grad, obviously know John Wooden's thoughts on having a balanced team. I don't know all the UCLA players but I remember a John Wooden interview where they asked him about having 2 Kareems. His reply was, No, I'd rather have one Kareem and one xxxxxx player. Don't recall the other player he named but the point was to have balance.

Sooooo....I guess that means that it would be better to have Bynum than Bosh, since Gasol already plays like Bosh.

Well, is there another big that we can trade Bynum for? Yes, he can be great but you gotta be in the game to be productive. gotta learn to play through the pain. I don't think this kid will ever have that. Of course that is just my own thoughts but even he admitted that it's mental at this point.

If they want to save him for the playoffs, so be it but i'm tired of rooting for this kid and his potential. I'd rather have someone like Noah. He plays hard and plays nearly every game. He is a work horse. To be honest, I did not like him when he was at Florida but hey, his playing hard in the games has grown on me. Definitely not as talented as Bynum and his upside is not as great - BUT he plays in the game. Lakers need someone to be able to play hard in the playoffs. Doesn't matter what his potential is if he isn't going to be productive when it counts.

I did not go to UCLA - but my bro and sister did. Now my daughter wants to go there.

Mark Medina

let's see:

this is the Lakers blog.
the bloggers wanted to Chat during this game
the Lkaers are watching the Game.

it is clear that the Lakers have to sweep especially after the result of this blowout.

ANY INFO ABOUT THE LAKERS NOW is superfluous. DO THE WALK

enough of talk interviews and all that stuff. that is ok for the rest of the season

NOW, only victories COUNT

please learn your priorities. Okay?

I can't understand why Stan Van didn't give Brandon Bass some of Rashard Lewis' minutes. Lewis is not getting the job done. This is the ECF. Go down fighting at least.

Have the Finals started yet. These playoff have totally sucked.

Lakers have some great incentive to make this series with the Funs a short one. I hope they take care of business.

GO LAKERS!!!!

Jeff van Gundy

unfortunately, he DOES not. just ANOTHER chocker. 2 missed FT's

It could happen.

Jon K - put down the shot glass & step away from the bottle.

Don't make me worry about you LOL!

Beat LA chants in Bean Town. Do not look too far ahead but, OMG it is happening again. Laker posters "repect" middle age man remembers the 1980's. We want Boston!!!!!! Chick is smiling down us.........

M

I don't see how you can bring back Stan Van to coach that team. His players quit on him big time.

HAHAHA, Mark Jackson just said Dwight Howard took a look away shot. Funny thing is, Howard did take a look away shot!!!

Rich,

"I also realize that a team needs balance. You being a UCLA grad, obviously know John Wooden's thoughts on having a balanced team."

I had the pleasure of meeting John Wooden at Springbok's near Lake Balboa. A complete and utter gentleman. And, yes, I'm aware of his philosophy.

"Sooooo....I guess that means that it would be better to have Bynum than Bosh, since Gasol already plays like Bosh."

THAT is my key point. Gasol and Bosh have a similar skill set, thereby Bosh (while a phenomenal player) doesn't bring more to this team. He subtracts in the sense that he costs us a player that provides a skill set that Bosh doesn't have.

"I did not go to UCLA - but my bro and sister did. Now my daughter wants to go there."

I could not recommend the experience more. I hope your daughter gets in. A great school, great environment, and everything is flavored with the theme of "You are learning this so you can give back to the world." It creates a positive theme to learning itself that I wish more schools would embrace.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

GO LAKERS!!!

RESPECT sorry Aretha.

M

They should play Lewis at the 3. He is their best post up player and he will make Paula work. Might be too late now.

Every time Howard would miss a shot, there were no Magic players in sight on the offensive boards. Just a total lack of effort. Shame.

I would totally like Shaq next season as back up, why not, he's still a big heavy man.

remember how cocky the Orlando GM was during the summer.

they almost hold the NBA hostage with Hedo, after that with the Polish Sausage and later with the Bass guy.

and the Vince story like the biggest move EVER. and acquiring Barnes. they were the biggest players of the summer.

karma

they should have resign Hedo and maybe add some pother pieces

what a failure

If I were a Magic player, no way I could sit on the podium and talk about that game. I'm curious to hear what Stan Van has to say, though.

justanothermambafan,

"put down the shot glass & step away from the bottle."

Why? Seriously why?

Shaun Livingston: Incredible vision. A long point guard, just like Phil likes them.

Steve Blake: Cheap and is tailor-made to run the Triangle. A truly under-appreciated point guard.

Kwame Brown: A major step up from Josh Powell. Knows the system. Is a real power forward, but has been shoe-horned into center position most of his career.

Shaquille O'Neal: He's Shaq! He knows the system. As back-up to Bynum we have power and we have POWER! Anyhow, he wants to be redeemed as a Laker. He knows it! We know it. It's his last season. Seriously, why not, if he makes humble amends to Kobe?

Very true, also as a back up, there would be no back up center that would hang with him.

I agree having shaq would be pretty great - even though he's been a total ass since leaving the lakers organization...he would now have to realize that this is kobe's team. We need a big man like him for the playoff run. He could definitely handle any of the other bigs out there for short periods of time.

But would Kobe allow this to go down?

"Seriously, why not, if he makes humble amends to Kobe?"

I can see it now, they have Ring ceremonies, why not a butt kissing ceremony?
I like the idea.

Ouchhhhhhh

L.A.Times pays MM to cover the Lakers. NOT the Magic or the Celtics.

MM has his priorities straight.

I'm surprised this has to be explained to you.

I know ... Rondo shot 4-14. He must have had a terrible game.

The only stat in a game that matters is 131-92.

Stop reading that Billy Beane book. He could never win a playoff series. Stats are for fantasy players.

I don't know about Shaq as a Laker backup. I can't see him as a happy role player. But, never say never.

I think I predicted Boston over Orlando in 6. Yeah, I did. But I said it was going to be going away. Meaning it wasn't going to be close. I knew Boston would dominate them...but a sweep?

Dang, I knew I should have called that.

mike t.

1. First of all Magic said that the Magic would win this game.

2. Second of all, Magic is now saying the Celtics can't beat the Magic.

3. Listening to Magic kiss the Celtics' butts, THESE Celtics' butts, makes me utterly cringe.

The reason why Shaq doesn't work out as a defensive center is because he has skill offensively which compels him to do more than just play defense. Shaq isn't a good 2nd fiddle because he needs the ball to be effective.

Kobe will never agree to play with Shaq again. Too much drama!! It won't happen.
Secondly, Kwame Brown is not a better PF than Powell. Kwame cannot shoot outside of 5 feet. He could however be a cheap backup center.
If we can get Rupaul, we should trade Bynum. Bynum is not going to be able to play 20 games without getting hurt.

I sure hope Derek, Jordan and Shannon are practicing their elbow moves (meaning elbows to the jaw) because we'll see how Rondo does after he's been laid down on his back a few times with an elbow to the side of his head.

MM, are you going to Boston for the Finals?

Jon K, In today's league a PF who can't score outside of 5 ft is useless.

The magic have to play Lewis at the 3 and Carter at the 2. Period. He can defend Paula and post him up on the offensive end.

Regarding Shaq, he clearly joined the Cavs to win another ring.

That will be the primary motivator for his decision next season.

Our core will be back next year, a little older, but still vital, and Mitch will make decisions to do what needs to be done. He's proven himself.

With every playoff win by the Celts the Green Asterisk on the Lakers 2009 season gets larger and greener, larger and greener............

Jon K,

I ment Bynum must go because he is a very important piece to our succes and we need him to win. But if he cant stay healthy why keep him. If he is not healthy we cant win. So im saying trade him for another important piece, I believe he has all star value. Why not get another all star for him, who actually is going to stay healthy.

ok, tomorrow is game 3. time to put the HAMMER DOWN on los(t) suns. i'm thinking about taking in the game at (dan) majerle's sports bar. my daughter and i were there last year when L.A. won game 5 for the nba title against the orlando magic-less team. don't know if i'm putting myself in danger by going there, ha ha. phx fans are so tired of Lakers fans who live in arizona, maybe i should enlist a BODY GUARD! ha ha. hmm, feeling good about game 3. phx probably doesn't know how to defend L.A. now! btw, did gentry get any helpful hints from press row, when he asked for suggestions on "what to do" against the Lakers. ha ha. i look for kobe and company to SILENCE THE CROWD by playing even better. they look so focused and are CLICKING ON ALL CYLINDERS! Jon K--

I agree with Purple&Gold. Bynum is a critical part of the team because he's supposed to anchor the post. He's way more critical than Sasha in this regard. So if he can't stay healthy for the Finals for the 3rd season in a row (*knock on wood*)--especially critical this year against a Celtics team who can match the Lakers' front court--then the Lakers need to look at other options.

And crazy as it sounds, I agree if the Lakers can pick up Kwame for CHEAP, they should consider doing it. Running the post offense through Kwame was a disaster, but they don't have to do that now. They can run it through Pau and let Kwame concentrate on defense and rebounding.

You never know, maybe Dwight Howard will consider joining the Lakers some time in the future once he realizes he can't lead a team to a Championship by himself. The Lakers in many ways would be the perfect team for him--the open looks generated by the Triangle Offense (when the Lakers bother to run it) would make up for Dwight's lack of offensive skills, while his post defense would anchor their defense. And it fits in with the Lakers history of getting other star centers like Wilt, Kareem, and Shaq.

After tonight's disaster, I would not rule out Dwight considering the Lakers as a future option (as long as they don't hire SVG as Phil's replacement).

Kwame can't catch, can't shoot, and is lazy as hell.

Snaq is lazy and disruptive.

What do you think this would do to the culture of the team?

There's a reason why:
Miami missed the playoffs last season Snaq was there.
Phoenix missed the playoffs first full season he was there.
Cleveland under-achieved while he was there (so he's at least not leader enough to help a team achieve)

No anf No. Double No.

If Snaq didn't have the character flaws, then okay - ditto for Kwame, but they DO have these flaws, and that's why we're better without.

Have you guys forgotten the principle of smushtraction????

it's going to be REAL important that Thriller and Derek make their shots. That'll be key.

YOU SAID IT LOUD & CLEAR!

BEANTOWN BEATDOWN!!!!!

Ok, Lakers...now it`s your turn tomorrow.

All week long, we`ve been staring each other down from 3,000 miles away.

Playing a near-nightly game of "can-you-top-this"?

Tomorrow night, show us what you`ve got!
We`ll be watching.

What worries me the most vs. Boston is Derek Fisher. Hope I'm proven wrong about that because the Magic are hyper-weak and the Septics are slightly over rated (they can be beat in under 6)

lakers are getting ahead of themselves, the lakers will go down on game 3 and 4 , count on it. Eventually the suns will steal game 5 and close it out in game 6, Faker fans are in for a rude awakening, Suns will rape your fakers kobe style...........go SUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RED`S LOVE CHILD,

Come to the Light side of the force.

It's okay. You can. It's better here.

I was a total Shaq fan when he was here and hated how the team got broken up after Detroit. Still, I have to think his time has passed. He doesn't seem to have much left and isn't willing to let go. I don't want Kwame back, he was given every chance and didn't pan out. Shaun Livingston, absolutely! Blake, maybe. I could see him filling a role.

Scott,

Phil Jackson did say that if there was one player he would start a team around (considering age) it would be Dwight Howard.

Orlando Magic have good players with no heart, while the Boston Leprechauns have old players with big mouth. Of all the three games played, 3rd game was convincingly won by the Irish Luck, however their fans act like silly fans are always gloating on one's misfortunes. Well, that's understandable because they were eliminated last year by the Magic, they kept on hammering KG was injured, no KG etc, etc. but when they're winning, it is their glorious year blah, blah, blah. What goes around, comes around it is too late to teach a leprechaun to be graceful in victory.

dave m,

As weird as it sounds, I feel as if the karmic role of the Lakers right now is about redemption.

Redemption for Kobe: Criminal
Redemption for Thriller: Bad person
Redemption for Pau: Loser
Redemption for Derek: Liar and bad player
Redemption for Andrew: Wimp

There's something going on.

Redemption.

Nothing clears doubt like a Championship.

It matters.
