Video caption contest: Pau Gasol getting posterized and Kobe Bryant getting stuffed

The Lakers certainly didn't have the welcoming to Miami that Will Smith usually enjoys. They started off their three-game trip with a 114-111 overtime loss to the Heat, continued their lack of urgency and must find a way to correct it all  Friday night against the Charlotte Bobcats.

To make matters worse, both Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant  were among the victims of NBA.com's "Block of the Night" and "Dunk of the Night" highlights.

Below, you can see Gasol getting posterized by Michael Beasley off a putback dunk. Perhaps the play will serve as a lesson that Gasol should be aware of opponents in a position to rebound and box them out.

And here you can see Udonis Haslem stuffing Bryant in the fourth quarter as he drove through traffic in the lane.

To be fair, Bryant was also featured for his outstanding offensive performance, finishing with 39 points on 15 of 28 shooting. It has been mentioned frequently that he's had shooting struggles since he has  returned from an injured left ankle. So Bryant definitely deserves kudos for his work on shooting hours before game time,  even if he also deserves criticism for his lapses on defense.

Among any of the three videos, I'd love to get any video captions that would best describe the highlight reels. Feel free to comment on just one, two  or all of them. The best comment will be featured in tomorrow's "Reader Comment of the Day."

The NBA...where going over an opponent's back in full view of 3 referees with no call, and then displaying poor sportsmanship by taunting your opponent, earns you "Dunk of the Night".

Haslem made a superb block on Kobe. He is a very underrated player, the kind who could really make a difference on a contending team, much like he did during the Heat's championship run in '06.

Kobe was in full Mamba effect on offense last night. But he's got to be the Mamba on defense as well.

MM,

'The comment of the Day' should not come from a video caption contest. It should be awarded to the best comment based on observation and/or knowledge of the game.

And, you can have 'Best Video Caption Comment' for the contest.

Just my opinion.

Great job!

Yes, MAMBA was in full effect last night, too bad he didn't keep shooting instead of trusting his teammates, ha, ha! If his teammates were as successful in making shots like LBJ's it might hold water. He was 3 for 3 in OT until he passed off. He does bear some responsibility for Richardson, however. Go Lakers!

On first seeing those videos, I thought I accidentally wandered into a Celtics blog. C'mon, don't we have enough negative posts already???

Mamba24 & All Reasonable Fellow Blogsters,

I’m thinkin’ that maybe we need a separate roll call for all the haters out there. I know that you probably won’t do it because you’re too nice and I’ve already bit off more than I can chew around here, but maybe someone else will step up to document some of the more outrageous hateful comments that seem to crop up like weeds every single day. Plus it would be useful to collect all of these diseased usernames in one place for those like me who like to keep an ignore list handy and just scroll on by...

Say MM,

Reply if you have time. Are you any type of collector? I mean, have you asked any of the Lakers for autographs or as a Pro writer is that not allowed or what? Just curious. My son and I used to go to Indy and see Lakers play and get pics and autos. We have met Kobe and he was super in signing and taking pics. We always tried to catch players when they weren't too busy and such. I taught my son (he's in his 20's now and we don't get the opportunity now, but I sure treasure those good ol days!) to be very respectful. When Kobe was a rookie, I asked him for a pic with my son by saying, "Mr. Bryant," a few times with no response until I figured out that no one called him that and immediately when I said, "Kobe," he turned around, smiles took the pic and signed. I love telling that story!
One more quick point about what many think about people selling autos of players. Most collectors want guaranteed auto authenticity so they buy from Upper Deck Authenticated or cards signed for Upper Deck, Topps, Panini, etc. I've not bought anything just on someone's say so. I don't think too many collectors do either. Your thoughts?

MAMBA24,

Keep me in the pro-Lakers roll! I think there are pretender Laker bloggers and there are some that get frustrated sometimes (don't think there is anything wrong with that) on our, at times, lackadaisical play. Go Lakers!

@AZTRONUT, Suggestion noted. What say you Laker Blog?
Mamba24

Et tu, Marco?

Chic - Fair point. I just started this so obviously just kind of seeing how it goes. I wasn't always going to do a video caption or photo caption each day. It was just whenever it was warranted if I see a cool video or photo.

MM

Methinks Kobe is relying too much on Ron to guard the other team's best player. I would've liked to see Kobe guard Wade down the stretch, as Kobe is probably quicker than Ron and generally does a good job guarding Wade. We need both Kobe and Ron to play to their All-Defense capabilities.

No more resting on defense...this aint the rec league. It's time to start playing consistent, championship-level defense.

DJ - No as a reporter, I've never asked for anyone from the Lakers or any athlete period for an autograph. Not only do news operations forbid it for journalistic and integrity concerns, the teams forbid reporters from asking players for autographs. We set those rules in place because the nature of our relationship with players and coaches are inevitably different than with their fans and it sets up a bad scenario I think for both parties. One, it makes any journalist appear to be a homer and lack integrity. Two, it puts an athlete in a tough spot because if they dont want the autograph there may be fear that they wouldn't be covered fairly. The team has a policy like this to protect players from setting up a system where journalists could profit off their name or sell those items to people literally outside the locker room.

It's really a good policy for all parties to have.

MM

Thanks MM, kinda thought that and that makes complete sense. Appreciate the reply!

MAMBA24,

You have my vote. Time to put a stamp on them.

BTW, we missed your roll call yesterday, see what happens;-)

Greetings Laker Amigos! It's been a while since I've been able to jump on the blog or the game chat (I guess I'm one of the few guys whose business is going really well...sorry, dudes, somebody's got to), so it's good to jump in and see what the mood is. Not good, I see. So thank Kobe (i.e., "God") we've still got Mamba24, Laker Tom, Jon K, aztronut, ChicNstu, justa..., cali..., and a few other true purple and gold bleeders like me to proudly carry the Laker flag until kickazz time (playoffs, for you trolls) returns.

Yeah, I'm troubled by our continued 46-minutes-of-funk-until-we-really-really-try routine. And I'm blown away by how most of these teams that play like roadkill against everyone else can play totally unconscious against us. But get real, how many of these teams can play that way for 4 out of 7 against us? Answer: none of them. Not even the Princess and the Peas.

So Mamba24, put me down as Shotgun on the C'mon Already With Kickazz Time! BANDWAGON. Let's RIDE!!!

Like who? I feel people are entitled to argue and disagree and that's what makes this blog so great. Nothing is one sided. Kobe lovers-haters and trolls of envy will come.

Been a member since Fall of '06 and the blog had the Smush Haters-Zakee, Kwame advocates-Mike T, and Kl-Gunner kats. It brought color. Mark Medina is doing a great job and he is carrying the torch.

Mamba24,

Nah, your not onion-skin Mamba24 you're have been tested before those KL vitriol's which are worst than this. Some are just venting, some are teasing coming from kids of other teams because Lakers are the Champs and some are comment are backlash from lakerholic themselves on rude awakening.

If you sensor names, that is no longer a roll call. Lakers Blog is a huge umbrella. Let them post what they feel and let them feel guilty on premature prognostications by pessimists or premature proclamation by optimists.

Hey Laker Fans,

Something to keep in mind, the Lakers have been to back to back finals now.
Yep, 2008, 2009 all the way to the finals.
Thats like another 1/2 season of games, and those playoff games are all intense ones. For 2 years running now they have had a short summer vacation.
So keep in mind, no other team in the NBA has played as many games as the Lakers have the last 2 years.
This is bound to take its toll on energy and focus over time.

Just like the mini-dynasty Lakers of 2000-2004 they are going to lose some stupid games to weak teams because of sloppy play.
Look, the Celts lose to the lowly Nets but the Celts will still be a tough out in the playoffs.
The Cavs recently lose 3 in a row but are still a formidable team. Oh, btw, the Lakers still haven't lost 3 in a row since Gasol joined the team, which is quite an accomplishment. You might want to remember that when you get down on Gasol.

They have a real tough challenge this year, trying to get to their 3rd consecutive finals.
They may or may not make it, it's a formidable task.
How many teams have made it to 3 consecutive finals appearances other than our Lakers?
I don't know the answer offhand, but I know it's not very many.

We have become pretty spoiled by the enormous success of this Laker franchise. We expect a finals appearance almost every year, we expect them to win almost every game.

Maybe, just maybe, it's not the Lakers that have the problem.
Maybe it's our expectations that need to be dialed down just a smidgen.
If we win 60 games this year, that's one helluvan accomplishment, enjoy it already.

So anyway, I have resolved to try and enjoy the journey as well as the arrival at the destination.
Try it, you'll like it.

Attaboy Mark Medina! I salute you on what you told Mamba24

As far as you should be concerned, I'll approach every story with a very open approach, meaning if the Lakers do something well, I'll do everything to the best of my ability to showcase to you how they excelled. If they do something bad, I'll do everything to the best my ability to explain why they did poorly.Posted by: Mark Medina | March 05, 2010 at 01:24 PM

Stay in the open, don't hide, don't sugar coat, don't feed fuel on fire when Lakers are on their lowest ebb but just tell it what it is. That is a fair reporting of a journalist.

Mamba, AZ, et al,

Agree with Charles on this. Let others say what they want to say without being singled out as some sort of disease. If someone else wants to respond or call them on it that's fine. I don't want to see this blog further divided into sides, for and against.

Sometimes it can get frustrating and someone just vents, that shouldn't put them on a bad list of some sort. As for those who are just always negative and critical, that's ok too, often they do have a point.
It takes variety, let's welcome them all.

Mamba24,
I'm a little leery about such a list. Who decides who goes on it and who doesn't? Once you are on such a list how do you get off? One man's hater is another man's objective poster. The idea just raises a whole bunch of nasty issues that are hard to even list completely.
I think everyone probably already has their own list of who they think is an @$%^ and who isn't. I know I do, and I scroll accordingly. I'm not trying to tell you or aztro what to do, but I think if anything, such a list would only raise the level of bitterness and make things worse, IMHO.
I am at least, very skeptical.

MM,
i dont get it.. whats the whole point of devoting a whole thread to those video clips?

makes no sense unless your gettin a kick out of it.

nazr, chandler and diop are all inactive.. whos gonna dominate our bigs tonite?

yellow fever - nothing other than just trying to lighten the mood. i know they're obviously against gasol and bryant, but figured people would have things to say about those videos

MM

I did think there was a bit of a negative tinge to FCM's little summaries today, and i agree with bronx that beasley was leaning pretty hard on pau there. obviously he is now the second dirtiest player in the nba.

anyhoo, we get a chance to turn the mood around pretty quickly tonight, if we feel like it. I hope we are gonna get some rest at some point, resting right up until overtime is not always the best plan to cut your minutes.

anyhoo. Mamba, i actually felt a little twinge at not being on the morning crew, and yeah, i know i asked for it. Honestly, though, i don't feel like i need a special listing and i fear the establishment of a blog hierarchy. It's an awful power you wield with that roll call, and with it comes a great responsibility, as my poor departed uncle ben used to say, often as he was serving up a generous helping of his own special brand of rice. Or something. I might be getting my icons confused.

IT IS ALL ABOUT THE LOVE

GO LAKERS!

AZTRONUT… I had to LOL at your suggestion for a troll roll call. The only problem with your suggestion is that most of the bloggers who would be willing to call out all of the trolls on a roll call would likely be on the list themselves. I kiddingly suggested to Mark Medina that all of these new trolls were the result of his work bringing more and more Lakers fans into the fold. What I think would be fascinating is to find out the political affiliation of most of the trolls and negative posters on the blog. I am fairly certain that we would find a higher than normal correlation between bloggers’ negative attitudes and their political preferences.

Ironically, I wanted to be an astronomer when I was a young boy. I dutifully read my Edmunds Scientific catalog from cover to cover and even won a blue ribbon at the Wisconsin State Fair for my spinning glow-in-the-dark detailed model of the moon in a box that you viewed through a 1-way Edmunds mail-order mirror. My secret touch was of course the basketball beneath all the Plaster-of-Paris mountains and craters. Glad we finally have a real rocket scientist on the blog. Some things do demand an expert rather than an ex-spurt.
- - - - - - - - - -
MARK MEDINA… I have to say I find it unbelievable that anybody could be a journalist reporting on the Lakers and not either love or hate the team, especially after developing relationships with the players, coaches, and front office personnel. How does that happen? I frankly cannot imagine an obvious fan of basketball not rooting for a team whenever there is a game. What about before you became a journalist? If you went to Syracuse University, were you once a Knicks or Celtics fan? Anyway, I am reminded of Brian Kamenetsky, who was also not a Lakers fan even though brother Andy was. I find you both inscrutable.
- - - - - - - - - -
MAMBA24… Yikes, a roll call must mean a game today and at 4:00 p.m. no less, which means I had to run home and set my DVR during lunch hour. The Lakers may not be too happy to have a lot of back-to-backs but this fan would just as soon have a game every day of the week and two on Sunday. Back-to-backs are great, especially after losing the opener. The quicker you can get the bad taste out of your mouth the better. Of course, I don’t have a night job like you managing all of our bandwagons as well as the Roll Call. So thank you for the extra effort to hang in there when your real life intrudes. You are the man and appreciated.
- - - - - - - - - -
CHARLES.. “Can't take the jungle out of the monkey. (Peeling the banana).” LMAO. Not sure how to take that one, Charles. Knowing you, I’m sure the intent was purely humorous and not controversial. When you get as many Lakers fans congregating in one place at one time, you can definitely expect to have the full range of human talents and foibles, which is I think what you were getting at. At any rate, as you pointed out, this ain’t nothing new to us old time bloggers. After Zakee, Mike T, and KL, these trolls are just a bunch of wimps.
- - - - - - - - - -
CORNERJ… “So Mamba24, put me down as Shotgun on the C'mon Already With Kickazz Time! BANDWAGON. Let's RIDE!!!” It’s pretty obvious to me that this team is completely confident that they can turn it on and dominate once the exhibition games are over. This team reminds me of the Shaq/Kobe team that won it’s repeat by finishing an uninspired regular season with 8 wins in a row and sweeping through the playoffs except for the one OT win by the 76ers. When the “real” season starts, we will dominate.

the newly born bobcat cub.

phred - well i would say it was negative because the lakers lost and showed some pretty bad things out there against miami. One of my esteemed colleagues I went to college with was amused at one point when pr officials and fans wondered what drives reporters to write "positive" stories or "negative" stories. He answered it was pretty simple. "If the story I'm writing about is positive, then it'll be positive. If the story I'm writing about is negative, then it''ll be negative." If the Lakers didn't play poorly against the Heat, today's posts wouldn't have been negative.

MM

Laker Tom - It's not as difficult as you might think. Journalists root for the story. It's pretty simple.
MM

Gasol had better wake up and realize that he needs to secure the ball, and dish out some pain as well, otherwise his raggedy-andy (but I can pass) act will be shipped out for someone like Boozer or some body who can play with the Varsity. About 1/2 of his layups should be dunks.

yellow fever - nothing other than just trying to lighten the mood. i know they're obviously against gasol and bryant, but figured people would have things to say about those videos

alright but i'm gonna keep my eye on you since you're not a lakerfan.. haha.. TGIF!

THIS IS SADDDD! I AM A STUDENT OF THE GAME AND LACK OF DEFENSE IS A SHAME! I KNOW ITS JUST THE REGULAR SEASON BUT COME ON! THE BULLS PLAYED HARD IN THE REGULAR SEASON AND THEN PLAYED OUT THEIR MIND IN THE PLAYOFFS IN THE 90'S. THE LAKERS ARE DISRESPECTING THE GAME OF BASKETBALL! I AM THE 1994 HUSTLEMAN OF THE YEAR FOR MY HIGH SCHOOL, DO YOU (LAKERS) NEED ME TO SHOW YOU HOW TO HUSTLE??

Posted by: Art -FL Laker Fan | March 05, 2010 at 02:56 PM

Great, you'll get people like GreenWieniefromBeanie, Kwame'sCalvesLover, and Ding Ho from Prattville....oh no, he's back at his regular job down in the OC.

@MAMBA24....

I'm against anything that takes away the positive energy that you bring to the blog. Sorting out trolls is beneath you, my brother. We don't need you dealing with all the negative vibes that trolls bring.

LakerTom,

Please don't introduce political affiliation in a blog.

This is a forum where free speech must be encouraged.

Also, many of us here like Charles for example do not favor setting precedents or factions or "gang mentality" based on what u believe? How do you define what you believe? Perhaps, today you and aztronut agree with one another but in the future it may not be the same.

It is enough that you learned a lesson on relationships when Korey was still blogging and we were all together in that 55 bandwagon. later on, Korey who is also a strong willed blogger has another idea which is contrary to yours. Then comes KL, you want to ostracize. How about Mike T, you and your peers decided to send him to the doghouse.

The definition of a Laker fan is an open ended ...... fans may have opinions as beautiful as the sunrise, as hot as in high noon, as fading as the sunset, as cold as winter or as dark as the total eclipse. it comes all from any weather of the day.

If you disagree, all you have to do is scroll and that is what you are doing on other posts that criticize Bynum, isn't it?

@Art-FL Laker Fan....

That was a great post where you reminded everyone just how unique and wonderful this Laker franchise is. Becoming excellent is a lot easier than maintaining excellence. Way to maintain a big picture perspective.

Lakers are on denial..Lakers have nobody but Kobe who is consistent. Laker has all but inconsistent players , no urgent setmind like other teams and denied they don't need a help, made no attempt to trade no good players like a shasa,Luke walton.need a point guard who can put some point..Fisher was good but it's no good to be compete ashe is now...how many point or pro on foul troubles shasa. wake up Lakers, trade them and get some good players.
