The Showtime Lakers of Magic, Kareem, and Worthy is the best 5 Championships in 9 seasons. The current "Ko P. DeLA-Ron Dynasty" Lakers Kobe, Pau, Derek, Lamar, Andrew, and Ron will win 2-3 more Championships and give The Showtime Lakers a run for their money.

I am going with Showtime era, not only because they won 5 championships but they brought NBA to the rest of the world. NBA and Lakers wouldn't be the same without this team. On the other hand, still too early to judge Kobe-Pau-Bynum era. If they manage to win at least 3 more champs I will go with them for the best basketball team, because I think they have more competition now (Celtics, Denver, Cleveland, Orlando, Spurs, Dallas,...) than Showtime had, but this team will never be overtaken as the most important team for NBA and Lakers.

Vamos Lakers!!!

Chema

Kobe's current team may have the current highlights and advantages due to being the most recent team in people's consciousness, but the Showtime Era of Magic-Kareem-Worthy epitomized beautiful team basketball at its highest. The only possible shortcoming of that team is that it was not dominant on defense, although it was definitely an offensive juggernaut.

IF the Kobe-Pau team wins an additional 2-3 championships, and establishes BOTH a defensive and offensive dominance during the run, then it can be mentioned in the same breath as the Showtime Lakes.

First of all this team is NOT better than shaq and kobe. At the time Shaq was probably the best player in the world (minus the free throw shooting)and Kobe was as Shaq said it, "the best player in the world." 3 rings yall and it should have been FOUR. Now if we win this year the conversation has legs, otherwise don't give me that Bynum/Gasol stuff. We're only a quarter of the season in, relax a little bit.

However I will say this. The only team to take us to 7 games last postseason was Artest's team and just like the Gasol steal- we evolve into champions overnight. Our defense is a beautiful thing to watch right now. We're like the Spurs with Rodman and Jordan. The posibilities right now, IF THE BENCH CAN STEP UP, are limitless. We are in dynasty mode and there's nothing Boston or anybody else can do about it. Kiss my grits Celtics fans.

Well, Showtime is Showtime for a reason.
Nobody touches them YET.

I have strong bets on this current team though. I really, really see how the could become something very special on their own.

I have never been such a great fan of Shaq (yes... that's it... I said it finally) so while I enjoyed the Shaq Kobe winning era, it never truly constituted my example for a dream team saga.

I wish I could have been there to appreciate better the Wilt /West times instead. I mean, I have recorded things but for how big and well due my huge praise for them can't be, they can't come in mind when I think of the all time best era.

Showtime. Hands down by now.

I think the Magic era was the most exciting to watch..It made it fun....

But by no means should we forget that 10 year span had a little of everything a basketball junkie could wish for...

Magic,Kareem,Cooper,Worthy,Scott and a staedy supporting cast that just got better with age.....

How lucky have we been?......Simply amazing talent....

If you never saw Showtime, you shouldn't even be allowed to vote on this. Seriously, there has never been a team (in ANY sport) that had the buzz and the electricity of the Showtime era. Yes, all the other teams/eras were/are special, but there will only be one Showtime, baby. When Magic plugged them in and got them going, and Chickie Baby was firing up the popcorn machine or getting the Jello jiggling, and Dyan and Jack and Dancing Barry were up and dancing, and the whole Fabulous Forum was rocking...wow, there will never be another Showtime.

I think we've already done this poll.

Kobe-gasol. Deeper bench.

****WE’RE STILL HERE***
Looked out the window what did I see, the sun just where it ought to be.
The sun didn’t explode out of the sky, and The lakers Blog will never die
We’re still here and that’s a fact, So management it’s time to get this thing on track
Yesterday was like being on a Roller Coaster Ride, all that kept me going was Laker Pride
Pride in the team and blog family too, When the going gets rough I know you’ll come through
But don’t relax and think the crisis is done, It’s still possible they’ll do a hit and run
What was the most gartifying thing to see, That even the disgruntled returned to say let us be.
And quiet as it’s kept some of their beefs were real, With the old regime We all know the deal.
I don’t like controversy but it is a fact, A lot of people posted but their post did not come back
Now some of this could be blamed on the computer I know, But some of it was B.S. I now say so.
But I believe in putting the past behind, besides my mentor Edwin would want me to be kind.
So as much as this is a crisis, it’s an opportunity too, To have some input and try things new
Brother “Swish Index” wasn’t just talking stuff, though it did come out just a lil rough
But tough times demand tough talk, So we’ll either get it together or all take a walk
There are already plans for other blogs by us, but lets give it few and show a lil trust
The Times didn’t cause this mess and we can’t blame the Kams for looking out for their best
But what’s best for them was not for us, So for the moment in the Times I’ll place a lil trust
But trust cannot be given it must be earned, that’s the only way to keep from being burned
It was nice to see some newbies jump in the fray, Chema, Iggy, you “done good” yesterday
Then the Elders lent their weight to the cause, They rallied Laker Nation & posted without pause
To many names to mention here, but we appreciate that you fought for what you hold dear.
Well that’s about it, I guess I’m through, I’m Mamba24 and LAKER BLOG I’m proud of you

With respect to the past, it's a little difficult to be nostalgic when the present team keeps me focused and excited about it's potentiality of a new dynasty. Though I have flashes of memories watching the Showtime era, I became cognizant of the this whole Lakers-love phenomenon later in life. No time excites me more now that Kobe is finally in his position to seal his place among the greatest NBA players.
If and when the Lakers when this year, commentators will again ask Magic where he sees Kobe's position among the greatest Lakers (a ridiculously rude question to ask, IMO). Kobe will now equal the amount of championships won in the 80's. And this team's dynamic hasn't come to its full fruition; it's exciting to watch how it continues to evolve.
Imagine that it's only a matter of time that Kobe's mid-range jumper will be close enough to perfection that he doesn't have to drive; and when Pau and Andrew's synergy in the post becomes instinctively fluid, both their offense and defense will complement each other.
These three factors give me much optimism, yet there's much more to say about the supporting cast. Perhaps some minor issues need to be solved, like having the bench rediscover its rhythm, but I think these are small wrinkles that will iron themselves out throughout the season. I think they aren't always focused on the team philosophy- it must be hard for the dudes who play less to accept minor roles, to be ready to play when PJ does finally call on them... Come the end of the season, they'll all be focused, talons will be sharpened because they'll know that they'll be in the position to win it again. Good times! Can't wait till Christmas, btw, and very excited to see this blog community circling its wagons, keeping it going. Band of brothers and sisters, you all are.
Which brings me to my last point. This blog is the best reason why I am more than ever excited about the Lakers, reading all of your thoughts, inputs, rants and squabbles keep me smiling. For three years now, I've been a reader. If I can help out in any way to keep it going I'll sure try. Yes, it's the bloggers that make this place happen.

At the moment, this bench is too weak to be the GLOAT. That could change, if Walton comes back healthy, Farmar keeps going at his recent level, and Shannon shows some consistency.

The Showtime Lakers redefined basketball. I saw the Wilt/Jerry team of the late 60's and that Showtime team would've run circles around them. The Kobe/Shaq teams of the early 2000's were great but they always seemed to have trouble closing teams out. The Showtime Lakers would not only beat you but they would bury you then rest their starters in the 4th.

Magic and Kareem in their prime was unbeatable!

Jayden24,

I still believe this team IS better than Shaq-Kobe. Even though Shaq was best player of the world and the same for Kobe I rather stay with current Kobe and Pau-Bynum (when helthy) duo.

Moreover, I also think like Zaira that the feelings for this team are more special than for Shaq-Kobe's team. The familiar atmosphere, the closeness to the fans, in short, the feelings, never were the same as when Shap was on the team.

Mamba24, LakerTom, John K, Edwin.... thanks for welcoming and suporting a newby (blogger not reader) in this tough time for our community. I will try to do my best.

Vamos Lakers!!!

Showtime. Cooper got defensive player of the year....off the bench.

They were that good. Not only is showtime the best Laker team, they are the best team ever, overall. Now that we have perspective on the 3peat teams we know that they have some flaws that can be exploited defensively.

I have DEEP love/affection for the Showtime Lakers. But Kobe, Pau. Artest, Lamar have a shot at matching surpassing what they had. They now have the contracts in place to see what they will do. It's up to them to determine who they will be and what they will accomplish. Magic and the boys earned every step and went through herculean battles. We now have the Celts as an accomplished foe. Maybe this seasons playoffs will define them and put them in the same conversation with Magic's boys. I guess that the Celts can screw things up by not showing up again like year though...LOL.

Time to change topics, sort of. But before I do, I big shout-out to Mike Bresnahan for chiming in with a comment. I think that bodes well for our future here.

This week the blog has been rocked with the departure of the Kamensky Brothers to what some consider the evil empire of sports. To interpret the objection, ESPN represents the corporatization of American past-times that belong to the fans. Now comes word that what some consider another evil empire is about to challenge the status-quo.

We're about to add TMZsports.com to the digital landscape. Yes, you read it right. The folks at TMZ are about to launch a site dedicated to the debauchery and human failings of the athletes who play our favorite game(s).

http://bit.ly/8PvMfp

The article rightly points out that ESPN and broadcast nets like CBS are held hostage by their contracts with the NFL, NBA, MLB and the PGA. The dog that bites the hand that feeds it quickly finds itself at the pound. But it would be hard to argue that the other extreme will save civilization.

That makes our participation in sites like this one more important than ever. It also places even greater responsibility on the LAT to preserve and foster our blog community.

Here is where we can blast David Stern for harboring inept officials, challenge Andrew Bynum for failing to commit to playing Defense, and express our distaste for anything Boston. Unfiltered commentary on how the games are actually played still has a home. Let's continue to nurture it. This house that we built with the Kamenetsky Brothers may be the last honest place left standing for true fans.

I will try to do my best.Vamos Lakers!!!Chema Posted by: Chema | December 22, 2009 at 06:53 AM

DAMN! Do we have some educated knowlegeable Bloggers or what?
And Rick Friedman...OUT FREAKIN STANDING!

Definitely Showtime. I was only a kid during that era, but I still felt it.

Not to say that these Lakers can't get there, because they surely can. And I think they will.

"Let's try to get some of you first-timers out there to comment. Don't be shy!"

1000% with you on that one, Houston Mitchell!

As I wrote previously, it could be said that the value on this blog community can be found in BOTH those who post, and those who just "lurk" here without commenting.

Every writer needs readers to appreciate his thoughts, no? Every Chief needs Indians to lead, right?

Having said this, I would suggest there is the potential to be a 'Chief' in all of us. So...to echo Houston's invitation...come on out and play you Lonesome Lurkers.

Cast your thoughts and opinions upon the waters for ALL to read and enjoy. Doesn't matter IF you're with us (Lakers Nation: Devotees of The Greatest NBA Franchise) or against us. Although, if you are against us, try to show some class and make cogent points without resorting to insults and name calling...lol.

To add my 2cents to The Poll:

It was my supreme honor to personally witness The Showtime Lakers of the 80's. Considering how many on that team, during that Magical (pun intended) Time went on to be included in The 50 Greatest Players of all time, and found continued great success beyond their playing careers, there is no question that The Showtime Lakers are the Platinum Standard for the Purple & Gold.

I lived and died with their successes and stumbles. By rights, the Lakers should have been 3-0 against our "rivals" from the East during that decade. I can certainly understand the feelings of the greatest owner in pro sports, Dr. Jerry Buss, who cannot bring himself to call that team by name, but refers to them as our "rivals" when he targets the ultimate goal of THIS Lakers team to surpass the number of titles that team claims.

Forget the victory balloons in The Forum that were never released, the errant pass thrown by James Worthy that would have given the Lakers a 2-0 lead heading back to Los Angeles in 1984 will forever haunt me. If you remember, that was also the year and series where Frankenstein (i.e. McHale) clotheslined and threw down Kurt Rambis. A disgusting play memorialized forever in infamy. They could not beat the Lakers on the court, so they resorted to thuggery and tried to BEAT them up instead.

Does anyone doubt that IF the Lakers came BACK to L.A. opening the series with 2 road wins, that THAT series would have been OVER? The Lakers would have had to win 2 of 5, and the guys in green would have had to win 4 out of 5. NO TEAM in the world would have beaten those Lakers 4 out of 5. That would have been the first of 3 victories over our "rivals" during the 1980's, and that would have led to our two storied franchises being tied at 16 championships right NOW, not looking up at 17.

The one we gave away, and the one they stole. To paraphrase Chick, it wasn't a 2 point switch, it was a 2 title switch. Talk about 'stirring the cup of bitterness' we poured for ourselves. *sigh*

Remember 1984, and what happened in 2008, when June 2010 rolls around Lakers Nation. All signs are pointing to a rematch for the ages next June, and I can hardly wait. It will be a Battle Royale. The Good Guys (in Purple & Gold) versus the Bad Guys from Beantown.

Then, like two ships passing in the night, as our Lakers continue to grow and improve, prepare to wave bye-bye to the green slime who will be getting fitted for their rocking chairs, as they fade back into mediocrity and irrelevance for another 20 years!

P & G R

For those of you who say that the showtime era was better:

Who were they competing against?

*I* am not saying that showtime was *NOT* better. I'm saying that
to answer the question you must talk about who the competition was.

With that in mind:

Kobe is competing against Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, LeBron, D-Wade,
Nash [ who I despise ] & Dwight to name some.

I cannot recall ever seeing, reading, or hearing about a superstar with a
fracture on his shooting hand dropping 40+ on someone.

I appreciate Magic as one of the greatest to ever play the game. I also saw
Jordan and the Bulls run him out of the building. [ twice wasn't it? ]

I do *NOT* believe that Jordan & the Bulls would beat this version of the
Lakers. It would be worth selling my car to watch the games, if I got good
seats.

Pau is *STILL* underated. Artest changes EVERYTHING. I still miss Ariza.

Go Kobe!
Go Lakers!!

ps. Shaq was *NEVER* the best! He was merely the biggest.

Remember 1984, and what happened in 2008, when June 2010 rolls around Lakers Nation. All signs are pointing to a rematch for the ages next June, and I can hardly wait. It will be a Battle Royale. No disrespect brother, but that was at the end of Magics career and not to crack on my own team but I think Boston also ran this version of the Lakers out of the arena in 2008. So you got to come a lil stronger than that. As for competition played against you may have me there.

Showtime was dominant for a full 10 years. Easy to forget that two hamstrings one year and Worthy leg injuries two other other seasons kept the five rings from arguably being 8. Even with the playoff injuries Magic and Co. was the hands down indisputable best ever, 60's Celtics included.

Thank you for your kind words.

Thinking back upon that incredible and amazing decade of growth and prosperity for the NBA, with the inimitable dulcet tones of ole "Golden Throat" (Chick Hearn) providing the Lakers narration in the soundtrack of my memories, is a good thing. It is the best thing. The Los Angeles Lakers under the ownership of Dr. Jerry Buss will go down in history as one of the Greatest Sports Franchises in History...bar none.

As we prepare to bid adieu to 2009, and look forward to 2010, those of us in Lakers Nation should be grateful and give thanks. We stand on the threshold of a nascent 4th Lakers Dynasty. I predict that the coming years will see the glorious Los Angeles Lakers franchise surpassing the number of titles won by our "rivals" from the East, and one Kobe Bean Bryant surpass the number of rings won by a certain Mr. Jordan!

Showtime era, definitely. The Showtime Lakers were just so damn reliable! There was always the sense that things were under control back then. I can't recall ever feeling that there was chaos within the team, or that egos were clashing, and affecting what happened on the court. Even if the Showtime Lakers didn't have the most rings of the choices given, I'd still pick them because of their cohesiveness and reliability as a team.

exheldovr,

"At the moment, this bench is too weak to be the GLOAT. That could change, if Walton comes back healthy, Farmar keeps going at his recent level, and Shannon shows some consistency."

I agree. We have yet to see how good this team can be and that is probably we'll see next year instead of this year; however, the depth of Showtime was unbelievable. Bob McAdoo coming off the bench? Really?

Showtime was absolutely beautiful basketball.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Chema,

"I will try to do my best."

Just be yourself, brother. That's enough.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!!

It is hard to say, I have watched the Lakers since the old Sports Arena days. I once sat the scorers table in the really old days. There were games when the building was less than half full. I dearly loved to watch Elgin play and Jerry West would be the best ever.

One thing I know though, Magic coming down the middle on the break, looking one way and passing another, was the most exciting thing I have ever seen in basketball, before or since.

I cried real tears when I heard Magic had the disease. But I loved all those teams, even Clyde Lovellote (sp?) who died young and Rudy LaRussa.

wait all of yall is wrong. kobe-shaq era was the best laker team ever. if they was here today they would have more than 4 and that team was like untouchable. idont care what team it was ot of kobe or shaq they still were the best.
