Live from Staples: Lakers vs. Hornets

Another contest minus the services of Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol. The Lakers will look for DJ Mbenga to step up in their absences, but really, it's all hands on deck when it comes to picking up the slack. A group effort like the one against Memphis provided a solid blueprint.

First off night for Josh Powell. Nobody's hot every night.
Sasha and Jordan both played pretty well tonight, but I think Shannon really stepped forward and showed that he should be the first guard off the bench.
Note that Sasha's not getting many minutes, but he is shooting 50% for the season.
It would be nice if Sasha could continue to play within himself and shoot well when
he does get a chance to get on the floor.
Pfunk must be openly weeping right now , with Walton hitting 3 3-pointers.
Great moment - about 7:28 left in the 4th - Luke got a rebound and threw a
football pass to Shannon for a dunk. Very pretty.
Wasn't someone complaining about the bench mob last week?
Yesterday's news is tomorrow's birdcage liner.

A really positive thought about tonight.
The Lakers were playing the best PG in the league, Fish only played 14 minutes, and the
sky didn't fall.
The Lakers held CP3 to a very mortal 15 points and 9 assists. The Lakers were +5 during
Farmar's 22 minutes on the floor and +1 during Brown's 21 minutes on the floor.
Hopefully this will increase Phil's confidence in Jordan and Shannon.

Lol tonight was great for the bench. I ain't gonna lie tho i was hooping Kobe would go for 40 and if it wasn't a blowout them he woould have. LeBron could Learn something from Kobe about posting up. Carmelo and DWayne are more the Natural Heir's to Kobe's mantle along with Kevin Durant but his post game is lacking too but he's got everything else.

"Pfunk must be openly weeping right now , with Walton hitting 3 3-pointers."
Come on LTLF don't belittle the dude. He's got a lot of pride and is always right (like saying how the Magic would out beat the Lakers and how prized Pat Riley prodigy Stan Van Gundy (who got ran off his Heat job by Riley no less) would outcoach Phil Jackson). LOL! Expect Pfraud and Yellowever to come back with a vengence :).
On the brighter what a great night beating the Hornets and showing why Byron Scott should be no future head coach of the Lakers (sorry Byron most underrated Showtime Laker ever but there's a reason why your rings only came at the behest of Magic and Kareem and Worthy and zero coaching rings).

Wow! Who knew Kobe's typically strong start to set the tone early on both ends of the floor would give way to the Shannon Brown / D.J. Mbenga show!!! Rest up Pau & Drew, I hope you two can get some meaningful practice time in together because the things are only going to get tougher when the Phoenix Suns hit Staples on Thursday.

NO looked worse than before. Do they miss Tyson Chandler that much?
Or is it because Lakers are just so good.
I think both. Poor B. Scott. He was one of my favorite Lakers during showtime but you can see that he's become a lame duck coach and has perhaps lost his team.
With George Shinn as the owner, you wonder about the players' loyalty.
The new Dreamshaking Kobe tore them apart in the first half and when they doubled him in the 2nd half, Shannon Brown put on the Superman cape and took over from KB.
As expected, when teams start doubling and tripling KB in the post, it opens up the whole court for his passing. Man, is the rest of the league in trouble now.
Luke Walton finishes his private training camp and looks like the regular season finally started. I hope we never need to start Luke again but he's just fine as the bench SF.
NO tried to go inside with the absence of Pau and Drew but didn't count on Congo Cash! Mbenga is an even more intimidating defensive presence inside than Pau or Drew, and Okafor looks too short to be an NBA center.
LO played solid defense on David West and was one of the keys to victory.
Ammo looked lost out there. Definitely lacking playing time. But you can't blame PJ, Ammo simply does not look NBA caliber. Perhaps, he s/d look into playing in Europe where defenses aren't as good.
Well, with 3 days off, Drew and Pau s/d be ready to play the Suns Thursday.
I think the Suns early season record is overrated and will not be that much tougher than NO.
Too bad really, because their absence has given the bench a lot of exposure and they have responded in the last 2 games.

Added comment: the Laker's defense has gotten better since a slow start to the season. The Suns offense s/d be a good warmup for the road game with the Nuggets Friday.
The Nuggets game will be the first real test of how good this year's Laker D is. Can't wait to see the Melo vs. Ron match.

Btw, Tex Winters must be loving the new post threat Kobe.
His triangle offense really thrives with a excellent post player who can score or pass out of the double: it was MJ in the 90s, then Shaq in the 3peat, then Gasol last year. This year, it's Kobe, and Pau isn't even back yet.
And as one blogger correctly pointed out, Ron Artest's entry passing skills is like Pippen to Jordan.
Now, the rest of the team need to be ready. In the NO game, I found that some players were not used to getting into position to take advantage of Kobe's passing out of the post. I'm sure the coaching staff will be working on that in practices.

KB Blitz,
You do realize that BScott led the Lakers in scoring in 1987-88, a championship
year for them. Dismissing his contributions to the Laker championship teams he
played on is insulting.
Mike Smrek won rings only because of Magic and Kareem.
Byron Scott contributed to the winning of his rings.
And how many of the current active coaches have taken a team... ANY TEAM...
to the finals? twice?
Byron's current lapse in New Orleans is due to a dearth of talent. Phil Jackson
is an excellent coach, but even he couldn't coach a shallow 2005-06 Laker team
to a title. Same thing applies to Byron. If he had the Lakers depth of talent, he'd
be doing just fine.
