Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has leukemia, long term prognosis is positive
Hall of Famer and Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar revealed during an interview Monday that he has Philadelphia chromosome-postive chronic myeloid leukemia, a form of the cancerous blood condition that impacts blood and bone marrow.
While Kareem admits the initial diagnosis, made last December, was understandably frightening, fortunately the disease can be managed and his long term prognosis is positive. He has no plans to curtail his wide ranging activities, from writing to documentary filmmaking to possibly joining the coaching staff of the Memphis Grizzlies. The hope, Kareem said in a Monday interview, is that being open about his diagnosis will encourage others to be proactive about their health.

Hey Cap, I have been a fan of yours since you were with the Bruins. I followed your career and Ali as heroes of my time. Get well soon.
If you need a 2nd opinion on your disease, consider our little cancer hospital in San Gabriel Valley that works wonders on leukemia patients. I have a relative with Leukemia who was cured after a stem cell transplant taken from the compatible cell of her sister. That is the City of Hope Hospital located in Duarte, Ca.

I heard the news driving into work today. Now THIS is something I will pray for. I will pray that whatever God has in store for Kareem will happen. We, of course, want full recovery and will be praying for such. The prognosis is good. But whatever HE wants will happen.

Watching him as a laker assistant coach though, there is a certain air of dignity around him that screams I'm a man walking among boys and I will not apologise for it. I guess that's why he'll always be the captain.

I have always been a fan, and i always will be. i pray for your continued health and well being. Along with Magic, you were the only other Laker i recognized growing up. I still remember asking my uncle "Who's that bald guy with those things on his eyes" during the 88 finals (my first clear memory of any Lakers games, as i was born in 83) and my Uncle telling me the the phrase that i made into my handle "Son" he said "That's Cap, and those are Cap's Goggles"...

First was Magic one of the greatest of all, Then freaking HIV put an end to his basketball

The Captain is going to live a long time. Gleevec is really the first miracle cancer drug, it was initially developed specifically for CML, and Kareem's still in the first stage of CML. He could easily live another 20 years, and pass away from something else that's totally unrelated to CML. Cap is going to be just fine. Now if he could just convince Drew to bend his knees more on defense.

As soon as I heard the 710 ESPN Sportscenter bump "A Lakers great has leukemia, back in 60 seconds" this morning, I knew it was Kareem. Hearing that it's a treatable form with a prognosis is a great relief.

18 years ago, almost to the day, it was the saddest day in the Lakers kingdom. When Magic announced that he had HIV on 11/7/91, the sky over Los Angeles was purple while we cried and pondered about his future. Now Kareem revealed he has Leukemia, another sad day but there is hope. Magic looks healthier than ever and Kareem is the most resilient basketball player i've ever seen. Just look how long he stayed in the league. So no doubt, Kareem will overcome this ailment and we will celebrate with him in June when we win our 16th title. Go Lakers!!!

I have a great picture hanging above my pool table. It is a playoff game in the old Boston Garden. Opening tap- the purple and gold team - Kareem, Magic, Worthy, Scott and AC Green. The White team? Ainge, DJ, Bird, McHale and Parish. Made me think - we lost DJ a few years ago, and Magic and Kareem are both sick, and Ainge just had a heart attack. How precious is life, and how inconsequential, really, is basketball. I used to take it a lot more seriously than I do - up to naming the 12th player on the Wizards roster and where they went to school. But, with my own kids now, it is all in perspective. I love the Celtics, always have, always will, but if they lose, so what? If the lakers win, so what? I can take some good natured ribbing, or I can dish it out. This is just a joke, man, gives me some laughs during the day. My daughters will be with me for the rest of my life!! Get well soon, Kareem, they're still shooting set shots in Heaven, not quite ready for sky hooks!

Kareem is G.O.A.T. in the combination of what he meant both on-the-floor, and off-the-court. Please put me in all the Cap bandwagons.
