Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum out Thursday night

Wednesday after practice, all seemed reasonably well in the world. Pau Gasol and Luke Walton practiced, and though Andrew Bynum missed the session with a right shoulder injury, Phil Jackson seemed reasonably optimistic that he'd play tonight in Anaheim... with a minor caveat. "My training staff doesn't anticipate anything that would prevent him from playing, but we'll see what it looks like tomorrow," he said.

Well, tomorrow is here, and Bynum isn't dressed. Lakers.com reports that Bynum will miss tonight's game with a rotator cuff issue in that shoulder, and a bruised left knee just for flavor. The hope was Gasol would be okay to play tonight as well, but that didn't happen, either. Clearly his balky hamstring didn't respond well to yesterday's run, and will keep him sidelined not just tonight, but Friday night in San Diego as well.

What that means for Tuesday night's opener remains to be seen. Hopefully with a weekend of rest, Gasol will be ready and rearin' to go. The big thing, though, is to avoid taking a two week injury and turning it into a two month problem.

Luke Walton (back) is dressed and seems likely to play. More to come as we get it.

First look at the Thuggets...

Do they still hold the record for Most-Tatted Team?

Is it just me, or does Thriller need longer shorts?

Curious question - has Kobe scored the first points in all our games so far?

justa- the Thuggets have a team tattoo artist...

Wow! Mbenga has been awesome tonight. 6 Blocks and he's totally shut down Nene.

Mbenga's a blocking machine!

Our bench can play or what?
Even they can control the game!!!
Mbanging with Mbenga!!!

GO LAKERS!!!

you guys jinxed this team
now we have injuries right and left

Congo Cash should start working with Jabbar. The discipline that you get in martial arts helps access deep focus. I feel they would mesh well together.

And check out the training of the Dream paying off. The move was all Kobe, but you know the spin that he put on K-Mart was practiced a few times this summer. Maybe even more than we know so due to the Dreams fanatics on footwork.

where is farmar??

Seriously I think the Lakers should beat the Cavaliers to the punch and trade Sasha (brick and mental) plus Walton (Boston chowd at heart) for Stephen Jackson. Don't let him go Clevland.

Hurry tell Kupchack

AK, BK and KBlitz:

C'mon fellas. Its clear.

Jordan Farmar should start and play with first unit.
D. Fish can back up Farmar like he backed up Deron Williams.

D. Fish is a liability on defense.
Offensively, he can't penetrate or finish at the hole.

Farmar way way way better than D. Fish.
Oh please, don't tell me about veteran stature ...

Lakers lites out lineup:

Farmar, Brown, Bryant, Gasol and Bynum.

Man, that 3rd string can scramble!

dave m,

Mbenga's a mblocking mbachine!

Mbye Mbenga Mback Mbench

AK / BK

You guys have an idea of why network broadcasters insist that Sasha proclaimed himself the "machine"? Gotta think the producers do their homework better than that. Either ignorance or they prefer that version to the local broadcaster came up with it. It always the punch line to a missed shot.

Shaq's nicknames lasted as long as the time between press conferences but this one's stickin'. The "self proclaimed machine" rings wrong.

0 down, 70 to go.....

I'm predicting 70 wins this year, so to keep focus on a seasonal goal, that will be my sign on. Of course the real season will start again with 0 down, 16 to go.

It's all about the journey people and this year will be something special. Can't wait for Tuesday. After paying pretty close attention to preseason, (tomorrow's game notwithstanding), here are some observations.

1. Kobe. I see some new lefty shots added to his already mind numbing repertoire of offensive moves. I also see him looking to make the great pass more than before. That is spillover from his great playmaking success in the final rounds of last year's championship run. I hope he averages over 7 assists a game this year. I know Kobe Blitz will be quick to say no, but I stick to the theory we can't lose if Kobe averages 8 dimes a game. With Drew back at full strength, I definitely think 7 is a real possibility.

2. Drew. If preseason is any indication......The Beast Is Back!!! It's so great to see him moving and showing that aggressiveness we've all grown to know and love from Dec thru Jan in the past 2 seasons. Let's all pray he stays healthy, because if he does, I predict 20-10 this year. AB injury free makes us unbeatable in my opinion.

3. Pau. If AB stays healthy and Pau continues to be Pau, we have the best twin tower combo since Duncan and Robinson or Hakeem and Sampson or Parish and McHale (yuk) lets throw in Walton and Lucas while we're at it. We're pretty much a two headed monster from hell. Gasol is so skilled and so smart, that I think right now I'd take him over almost any 4 in the league except for maybe Stoudamire, maybe. But besides being the best 4, he's also probably the 2nd or 3rd best center in the league. Dude is just a plain basketball stud. I love me some Gasol. Combine him with a healthy AB, Kobe and all the gang and that gold ball ain't going anywhere soon.

4. Lamar. Throw Lamar's versatility and length into the stew and it's almost unfair. Forget his off court turnover by marrying that beastly gold diggin ,Kardashian girl, Lamar is still Lamar on the court. He broke threw in the playoffs last year and I only see a more seasoned, focused and clutch Lamar going forward. Definitely the most important signing of the summer.

5. Ron Ron. I was in favor of this signing from the get go. In fact, I wanted him last year for Lamar. (thank god we didn't do that) I'm not thrilled with what I've seen in the preseason from Ron Ron. He looks semi lost on offense and very tentative. Hopefully, he'll get more comfortable soon. I'm concerned about his shooting and overall athleticism. Is it me, or does he look a step slow out there? I dunno, I wanted to see a little more to date, but his body of work speaks for itself, so I'm gonna blow off the preseason to learning the guys and the offense. He definitely is not looking to score, (a big concern of many, not me) however I would like to see him get more aggressive on offense and of course a few more boards and steals on D is mandatory. I'm sure it will be there, just haven't seen it yet. I love his size and he's the funniest guy on the planet, so hopefully come Tuesday the crazy, (in a good way) confident beast known as Ron Ron shows up. BTW, I love his passing skills, he's very underrated in this department.

Fish, Jordan, Shannon, Sasha etc... All look as good, or in Sasha and Jordan's case, a lot better than they did at the end of last season. Feeling very good about our bench. Powell and Morrisson perhaps in a shooting capacity look like they will be positive contributors as well.

Just some quick observations. Happy to be back from my blog sabbatical. Looking forward to one of the great years in Laker history. BACK TO BACK!

I was at work tonight and it was nice to watch a lot of the game.

Let's put it simply: Two of our four best players did not play and we kicked the crap out of the Thuggets.

This team is awesome and I was so happy to see Thriller in Purple and Gold for the first time.

By the way, I could tell by little body language that the rest of the team wants Gaffney to be signed. They worked to increase his production. That is AWESOME for several reasons:

1. He's an underdog and they care. That is team unity at its best.

2. Selflessness and humility. Those are winning qualities.

3. The guy is good. He can contribute. Push that point because this year is about winning a Championship.

"Oh please, don't tell me about veteran stature ..."

Oh please don't tell me the inevitable "Farmar can't defend, Farmar is a bad shooter, Trade Farmar" that the blog will get.

Farmar is nothing more than an okay starter. Shannon is more suited to this offense than Farmar is.

You would take Farmar over Deron Williams Toddd (Give me Farmar over anyone except maybe Chris Paul) and even a real stud who LED his team against the hated Celtics in Derrick Rose?

You need to have your head checked just like your desire to see Bynum as the number one option (against a quality team look WHO dominated their silly butts).

Has Stern outed himself with this?

Sounds like Gasol needs rest after a long summer of playing for Spain.
Enough already with pro athletes playing for their country?

Luke is just so fragile or maybe I should say normal. He looks like a guy who
enters the game after drinking a beer?

Bynum will never be healthy enough to play big minutes and should be held to
12/15 mins a reg season game.

The Lakers better get serious about defending their
NBA Championship. Stern needs to stop allowing international AAU games.

LakerTom,

If Bynum blocked shots/played defense the way Mbenga did last night ...

I'd be happy to ride on the sideboard of the "Bynum is a beast" bandwagon.
7 blocked shots & did a great job against Nene. FYI, Coach Karl thinks
Nene has a chance to make the all-star team. For that reason I would
consider him to be a quality C. I am looking forward to watching Bynum
play against Denver and see how he does.

[ FYI, I mentioned riding on the sideboard, because I don't think there's
room inside. ]

I can't help but wondering if the Laker's are over-nursing Gasol hammy to give him some rest after two years of 12-month balling and to give Bynum minutes he won't likely get during the season. Is it just me?

Don’t mess with Mbenga!

Preseason has generally gone well. This is a team that has been to the Finals two years in a row now, and they are relatively intact. They are well coached. Not a lot of surprises. They should, frankly, be ahead of other teams early in the season. What matters is where they are at the stretch run - they will need to be better than last year to win this year.

My concerns coming in were:

- Can Bynum stay healthy?
- How will a summer of international play affect Pau?
- How will Artest fit in?

All three are still question marks. We will have to watch how these things develop over teh next couple of months.

But the guards have looked better than expected. Sasha and Ammo found their shots it seems. Bynum has played well (though I am sure we would all like to see a little Mbenga in MBynum on the defensive end).

I'm not happy that Pau and Drew have not had a chance to learn to play together in preseason and figure that dynamic out.

I'm not thrilled at Artest's slow response (but not surprised, I am an optimistic skeptic on Artest).

I wonder if Luke would benefit some year from playing in pre-season. I like the things Luke does well, I am not a Luke basher at all. But this year I wonder if Lamar, Ammo and maybe even an energy guy like Gaffney might make better use of those minutes.

I wish there were enough big man minutes (with no injuries) to get Mbenga more PT. You have to love that energy.

This is a well put together team. My questions weren't answered in pre-season, so that will make the season more interesting.

Screw 72 wins, I want to see this team develop into a team that can be more dominant in the playoffs. That means Bynum and Artest making the D better. That means an inside out game with Drew/Pau. That means the bench being far more reliable than in last year's playoffs. The Lakers need to grow as a team over the course of the year and be ready for the playoffs.

Tom D.

Here's an odd story about the Celtics. I love the Rondo saga. I don't think Kibe ever caused this kind of distress in the Lakers locker room:

"As the wheels rolled back and the team jet lifted out of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, the season’s most humiliating loss dangled like an anvil inside the Boston Celtics’ charter flight. Kevin Garnett was still out, the playoffs were 10 days away and Rajon Rondo directed his teammates to gather in the back of the cabin.

“Go ahead,” Doc Rivers warned his players, “but it will be an awful meeting.”

Rondo appeared to want his teammates to air out complaints in the early evening of April 14, but it rapidly deteriorated into a grievance session that had the uncomfortable vibe of the young guys against the Big 3 of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. For some Celtics, there was a sense that Rondo had prodded the younger teammates to speak out on the tough-love tactics of the vets.

Rondo never vented, but one teammate who had challenged K.G. later confessed privately that he wished he had never spoken up, that he didn’t even believe the whiny words tumbling out of his mouth. Rondo insists he had the best of intentions, and yet there’s no mistaking the fact the meeting served to widen a gulf between him and his older teammates.

As the flight touched down in Philadelphia, Allen filed past his coach and insisted, “Boy, you were right.”

“I hate player meetings,” he said. “The right things are never said. I’ve always believed that either guys blow smoke up each other’s asses, or they go the completely opposite way and say (bleep) they can’t repair.

“Well, they had it and everyone got on the bus all pissed off at each other.”

Allen walked past Rivers with that you-told-us-so line, and the Celtics climbed off the charter flight and onto the team bus in Philadelphia in a way that they never did: single file. The bus to the hotel was silent. No words spoken. Rivers had a young point guard trying to fill the leadership void, and assuredly suffering the repercussions of a tactical mistake.

“Here we are, going to the playoffs, and the problem was that Kevin wasn’t playing and it’s tough to lead when you’re not playing,” Rivers said. “I don’t think you can. There was that, and a lot of other crap going on.”

Rondo had little enthusiasm to discuss the meeting, saying, “It’s hard to play when guys have things on their chest. I think it’s best to get it off there. But obviously Doc thinks otherwise.

“…A lot of guys said what they had to say, but I don’t know if it helped us or hurt us.”
.

Within the team, there was a sense the three biggest stars – Garnett, Pierce and Allen – had all made sacrifices to solidify the Celtics as a champion. As much as Rondo might want it to be considered the Big 4, the question would linger: What had he given up?

In Rondo’s defense, there isn’t a young player in the NBA with his burden. When it was suggested to him that his maturity would never be an issue were his teammates someone besides the accomplished Big 3, Rondo brightened and said, “That’s a good point. That could be a real possibility, but I am where I am. And I’ve got to mature a little more.”

Rondo can be a restricted free agent next summer and undoubtedly could command near a maximum contract – especially should LeBron James(notes), Dwyane Wade(notes) and Chris Bosh(notes) re-sign with their own teams. For now, the Celtics and Rondo’s agent are nowhere near an extension with the Oct. 31 deadline l

I posted about SJack to the Lakers sometime last year! He didn't mention the Lakers as one of his desired places to land. I gather he doesn't want to share any spotlight with Kobe, Ron and Lamar, HELL the entire Lakers team, but damn if we got him for acorns (Sasha/Luke and whatever else) that would be bomb. Sjack is a starter though, why would he play for us 10-15 mins a game maybe 20 to get a ring ??? I don't know he'd do that even for a ring....But having his ego on the team -- wow that would be wicked cuz he does have good playmaking skills -- him for Luke -- that would be cool, he can def pass the ball well and much better overall player. Not happenin' tho.

Chemistry is the key as far as SJack is concerned..I dont see if being a mix...

Only in LA -
Sasha and Walton for Stephen Jackson??????????

It is to laugh. This isn't Memphis, and Don Nelson doesn't want your crap.

For those of you talking about Stephen Jackson, you're fricken crazy.

I know there are people out there who think that simply by adding more talent to a team that one creates an instant winning formula, but that's not reality. Reality is that chemistry is as important as talent in building a winning program. Captain Jack is a chemistry killer.

The team we have is awesome. Let's not screw around with it.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

GO LAKERS!!!

wesjoenixon,

I think it's been clear for a while that the Celtics are lacking a sense of team unity. Kevin Garnett's viscious freakouts have not really been one to build team unity.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Shane,

You say you want to trade Sasha for Stephen Jackson because of Sasha's shooting?
Jackson isn't much better (if at all). Sasha's stats from the 2007-08 season were far
better than Jackson has ever shot. Even last year (a bad year for Sasha), Sasha shot a
higher percentage on 3-pointers.

I like Jackson, but it would be adding another powder keg to the team. While you're
at it, why not ask for the Lakers to sign Starbury and Jamal Tinsley?

The current Laker team has EXCELLENT chemistry. Artest is a slight risk, but he
seems to be fitting in very well. They have been to the finals two years in a row, and
won it once despite never having all of their players 100% healthy. In one of those
finals games, Sasha score 20 points in a Laker victory.

Don't mess with the team. They are balanced and well-integrated. They have all the
ingredients they need to repeat. The only thing that can stop them would be a major
injury to one of Pau, Kobe, or Bynum.

Folks I have a question to ask. What would a freakin giant, green bald headed lunatic know about team unity? You don't think they got Rasheed just to give that imbecile KG a rest do you? Say what you will about Doc but he's not a fool. Ever heard the saying 'It takes a theif to catch a theif"? Well it takes a Lunatic to control a Lunatic. Rasheed may be crazy but not like that maniac foul mouthed KG. Nobody else on the Septics has the Balls or are crazy enough to keep KG in line. So Doc went out and got himself a Hired gunslinging Lunatic Rasheed to Biatch Slap KG when he get's out of line so he does not completely destroy the team. Mark my words, by the end of the season it will be Sheed, not KG, not Paul Pierce and not Black Jesus who will be the Leader of the Septics and if that happens it is gonna be a hell of a final between the Septics and the Lakers and it may even go 6 Games. It aint going 7 regardless casue we have our own hired Lunatic in Ron-Ron and my money would be on him against either of the Septics 2 Lunatics.

why not ask for the Lakers to sign Starbury and Jamal Tinsley? Posted by: Long Time Laker Fan | October 23, 2009 at 09:28 AM

OK Folks this is the first one of the day...OUT FREAKIN STANDING LTL FAN!!!

Mamba24,

Interesting insight about Rasheed Wallace.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Ive got a couple of better questions ...

1.What would Laker fan who openly admits to not following, caring, talking, reading or even visting Celtic websites know about the Celtics to think their opinion matters?

2. What are Laker fans who are tired of talking about the Celtics be doing talking about the Celtics?

Amen, my green brohter. Why don't they leave the boys in Green to us, and let them dabble in purple and gold?

Or, to quote the GREAT man, and I love this, BTW - "Out-freaking-standing!!

I could never plagarize without giving you the props!!

131,

It is possible to have an opinion even if that person has no idea what he is talking about. I would submit you as an example! Just kidding. Sort of. No really just playing. Seriously - you don't have to actively search out information on the Celtics if you are watching any NBA team. If you haven't noticed - there are two teams garnering the lions share of attention in the national media. Then there are about 3 or 4 others getting a fair share, then the rest are chumps. Even though I don't care about the Cavs - I hear a lot of stuff about that without trying. I admit I do look at the C's a little closer - the whole storied rivalry thing, but I am not a C's expert by any stretch, I just don't care about them enough. As the season winds down and the playoffs approach my interest in the likely competition will increase.

Carry on with your Lakers bashing - none of our talk matters in the end it is settled on the court no matter what any of us fans say.

Peace,

EagleBoy

LongtimeLakerFan,

You said, "The only thing that can stop them would be a major
injury to one of Pau, Kobe, or Bynum." This is the mantra on the blog right now but reality says different. Even if there's a major injury to Bynum the Lakers will not be stopped. That has been demonstrated over the last two seasons when Andrew did have a major injury. Truth is, a healthy Bynum makes a championship run easier and success almost guaranteed, but our championship hopes are good with him, as he makes it easier, or without him. I do agree that a major injury to Pau or Kobe would reduce our chances of repeating.

By the way Mbenga was awesome last night. 7 blocks!!! Defense wins championships!

Go Lakers!

EagleBoy-

I wasnt not refering to you or Mamba. Neither of you have openly stated that you dont follow or talk about the Celtics. I do follow the Lakers. After all they play my second favorite team 80 times a year. But if you want to say I dont know what Im talking about ... thats fine.(I believe you when you say you were kidding about that... sort of.)

Mamba-

2 against 1 and Im sure we are still outnumbered! Im calling Red for backup!

This is really too bad.
On behalf of TRUE Celtics fans everywhere, we hope Gasol, Bynum and (not so much) Walton get healthy soon. We are looking forward to a great year, and I know you are, too. Can two teams win 70 games in the same year?? Well, I don't like to predict, but it should be a great year. We want both teams at full strength in the Finals. It's time for bragging rights, and let the games begin.

131,

I was joking. I may disagree with some of your analysis - but so what? I am a Lakers fan. I also know that you were not addressing me specifically - I was just commenting that one can have an opinion about a team even if they don't actively learn about said team. It is just a silly opinion. Watch a pre-game show - a bunch of yahoos talking about this that and the other thing that will happen in the game, then at half time they usually have to backtrack and say why they were wrong. Talk is just that, talk. They play the games for a reason and don't just discuss why this team will win or will not win. It is always settled on the field of play. If I remember correctly, the vast majority of folks predicted the Lakers to beat the C's, and uhm the Lakers got beat somewhat convincingly.

I for one could care less how much a C's fan posts, how stupid or logical the post may be. It is fun just going back and forth - poking holes in each others logic or analysis. This is a public forum, and when we post we risk getting called out, it is part of the game.

RED IS busy at the moment getting adjusted to Bill Simmons office.
You mean he didn't tell you?

EagleBoy-

I know you were joking. I agree, one can have an opinion anything. I just like to have some facts to support my opinions. If I came in here and bragged about the fact that Ive never seen or even care to see Kobe play a basketball game and then said that in my opinion MJ was better ... I dont think I would have much credibility. Or I was just talkn garbage about never watching Kobe play. Either way I dont look very good and should just keep my opinion to myself.

Im glad you agree that this is a public forum. Some people seem to think they own it and can decide who can say what. Laker fan proudly brings up the fact that fans were chanting "MVP" for Kobe in the Garden. Using there own standard of human conduct and decency ... I find that very disrespectful. To go into the Sacred Boston Garden and disrespect the Celtic Nation like that. I believe Laker fan did that at MSG last year as well.

Anyways did you want to take a shot at winning those 2 big cans of baked beans?
