"we didn't stop them

they missed the first shot...and we tried to rebound it."

-JKidd.

That sums it up right there.

WOW! It's only fitting the the 2009 NBA Champion Dall-NO, I'm sure that we won that last year, didn't we? Hard to tell. Farmar, Walton and Vujacic are as worthless as they were last year. Same old Fisher, can't shoot. Phil, please start Shannon! He comes to play. Of course we need Pau back, but come on. Same old deal too, that KB can't have a bad night and we still win, that's a shame. Why wasn't Bynum playing in the 4th? Well, no, I'm not gonna panic, but pullllease, guys, no team is gonna hand you anything this year. Don't want to say it, but those Celts are looking very good and HUNGRY too!

Bottom line is that I'm not worried.

The players all looked pretty good in preseason, so they're in shape and capable of hitting wide open shots - its the team cohesiveness that's missing. 2nd game in a row where the offense looks weak, the defense looks lost, and the W depends on out talenting the opposition. Worked pretty well against a depleted Clippers, not so much against a determined Mavs.

A few more efforts like this where we get kicked in the teeth will snap the team out of the funk. Soon, the triangle will flow freely and the defense will tighten, not to mention taking care of the ball

Those guys that were dressed up as refs tonight really had authentic costumes. Happy Halloween y'all.

I guess its not exactly a weakness, but this team usually has serious problems when teams zone up on them. Nothing to worry about, but it is a little bit troubling. How many times does it have to happen before the players recognize it?

Phil shouldn't have to call a time out and tell them to attack the basket, they should know to do that themselves. And there was absolutely know ball movement tonight. Dribble, dribble jumpshot.

I know its not gonna be a problem later in the season and when the games actually count, but watching it can be frustrating.

The offense will get better as the season progresses. There are a lot of times when Ron seems lost out there, and the only thing that can remedy that is practice and experience with the Triangle.

The defense we played tonight won't win us anoth chip, but its only the second game of the season.

Not the end of the world, but its too bad we have to wait until Sunday for our next game.

LG

i think this is normal for the lakers. I had a feeling of a upset befor the game started. I think we should win on sunday. But i know this year it will be very hard for lakers to be 100% every game or vs teams that are hungry. Becuase if you think about the have nothing to look forward too not even the big game because it does not mean anything no championship. the only thing they have to play for is to get better thats it. As long as it does not catch up wit us in the long run im ok with games like today. I dont like it but i know this is who the 2009-2010 lakers are. You can tell from last year that if we were to win and we did win, that man this team will be worse next year with games that dont mean anything or regular season games. But i still like the us to win it all.

I had to skip the game comments, as i just got back home when we were down a bit and i figured I wasn't gonna improve the atmosphere with much. My game analysis? We did some good things, and we didn't do some other good things. Ron Artest is turning into a guy with a pretty good eye for the open man, but still not good enough. We shot for crap, which will happen sometimes, I don't think the officiating was unfair, but they did establish a style that wasn't a great fit for what we were trying to do.

And yeah, I don't think the effort was all there. We don't get too excited about being behind, and I think this is a good thing, because I know the effort will be there when it counts.

I loved what Bynum did on offense, he might actually be at least as good on the offensive end as any other center in the league right now. He did do some rebounding, but we missed Pau's defense, as strange as it sounds to say that. I think our better defensive lineup is Pau and Odom, and it might just stay that way. But its definitely a bonus to have a post threat like bynum around. It'll be a long process to turn him into a good team defender.

Luke Walton? had a couple good passes, was a little slow, and managed to completely not be a factor in the slightest. Not that i'm sure some others won't have their opinion.

thanks, justa and dave m for the capsule summaries and the well wishing. It's gonna be rough, but there are compensations. I'm looking at a 2 bed 2 bath apt here with full utilities/ in room washer drying, 1035 sq feet for what I was paying for 650 sq feet in washingto. And I get free cable, which is nice. Also an old friend of mine is working in a bar downtown, so I might get me a bar stool right in front of the tv and see if it's lucky.

IT IS ALL ABOUT THE LOVE

GO LAKERS

40% shooting against the Cs or Spurs means the Lakers got destroyed by some good D.
40% shooting against the Mavs means the Lakers didn't show up.

That's why lots of people have said they'll never come close to the Bulls 72-win record. Hopefully this will serve as an early wake-up call (but we've all said that before).

Also detractors think Artest will become a powder keg for the Lakers. At this point it looks like the opposite problem--he seems tentative and nervous. Hopefully the nerves will wear off after a couple of games.

Could it be that Gasol makes this big of a difference on the team? Interesting to see how they perform when he gets back.

This shows that without Gasol, the Lakers are at best top 10. They would not be able to beat Boston, Cleveland, Orlando, San Antonio, Dallas, New Orleans, Denver, Portland, or Utah.

The Lakers will need to play Luke if ERATIC ARTEST continues to try to be the man and continues to play all-frantic like. CALM THE HELL DOWN FREAKING DUDE. He needs to save that kind of energy for the 4th. I don't know man Artest is damn good but ease into that energy brother. Okay Kobe kinda sucked tonight. Sasha lost his job for the rest of the year and man Brown is awesome!!!

It's only one game, but it was a stinker. Team misses Gasol. Now off to a Halloween party. Trick or treat!

Just super pathetic!!!! Gasol should have never played for Spain - these players owe it to the team paying them to play!! Here we go - celtics are crushing opponents and Lakers look like bad news bears again.

not so funsie, but not the end of the world either...

Thoughts on the first loss of the season:

1. The Lakers need Pau to compete with the better teams in the league.

2. Dallas is WAY improved with Marion & some of their bench players. When
they get Josh Howard back, and if they can stay healthy, I expect them to be
one of the top 4 teams in the West.

3. Farmar shot poorly and made some dumb mistakes, but so did Fisher (2-9,
4 turnovers), Odom (5-11 is okay, but lots of dumb mistakes => 5 turnovers!),
Artest (1-6, 4 turnovers and a technical), and even Kobe (6-19, 3 TO, tech).
When 4 of 5 of your starters play like poo, its asking a lot to ask your bench
players to make up almost 20 points that the starters fell behind.

4. Shannon Brown was very good in this game. Andrew Bynum was as well.
Powell was good on offense, but played matador defense on Marion, allowing
Dallas to maintain and extend their lead in the fourth.

5. I think the Lakers came out lackadasical - they took Dallas too lightly. In
the first quarter, Kobe looked like the only one who was really trying hard.
The others seemed to think "We're the champs, and this is only Dallas...
no problem".

6. I bet the Lakers hand Atlanta their collective assets on Sunday.

7. I still have confidence in this team. I don't think they're going to do any 72
win season or anything like that, but assuming Pau gets healthy and most of
the team stays healthy, I think they'll go all the way again.

8. Defense wasn't really the problem. They held Dallas to 41% shooting and got
several shot clock violations to boot. The problem was offense. You can't shoot
39% and have the starters turn the ball over 15 times and win many games.

At home, the Lakers with Pau are good enough to win on off nights.

With all the games he's missed, it may take a while to get this year's show in gear.

Hate it when our team doesn't live up to our hype.

farmar wants to be a starter? he should just keep his stupid mouth shut he's pathetic

Here come the excuses -
Gasol is hurt
The refs screwed us
It's only one game!

Though this game was a stinker, here are my thoughts:

- when Kobe is past his prime, this is what he'll look like several games in a row (shudder at the thought)

- Bynum's two step runner move to the hoop shows that he's learned some moves...from Gasol

-Artest's play was lackluster, but I still see him bringing a lot of intangibles to the table. Given Artest's nice ability to feed down low, we will see a big jump in the quality of his play once Gasol returns.

- Farmar is not a leader. His play is transparently selfish.

- Sasha is done for. I see him traded in the next year, finding another team and finding his touch. But it won't be with the Lakers.

- Walton...sucks.

- Shannon is easily my favorite Laker. Even during the preseason, I get super excited to watch him play. He makes occassional mistakes, but between fish, sasha, jordan and brown, I can't believe that he isn;t getting 1/2 of the available minutes.

- PJ has no interest in winning any given game in the regular season. He wants them over as fast as he can. As long as we are number one seed going into the playoffs, he gives a hoot about the regular season. It feels annoying, but once you accept it, it won;t give you a stomach ache.

- That was baaaaaaaad reffing.

I always thought that the Mavs had a good summer and s/d now be ranked higher than the Nuggets who stayed pat.
Their ability to put their 5 best players on the floor who can all shoot from outside when Dirk plays Center is unmatched in the league. Having Marion, Howard and Ross gives them 3 players who can stay on Kobe all night long.

Tonight was a good test of the Laker's offense because they played a team with a good defense.
So we find out that we really miss Pau and Artest is still very early in the learning curve.
The Lakers defense was not bad except for the times Marion was able to slip past his defender. I believe it was when Powell was on him.
I missed much of the game so didn't see how Drew played against Dampier, one of the centers who gave him trouble last year. But he had his 2nd double double so good job.
Mavs were primed to win because of their surprise loss at their home opener to the Wiz and the Lakers were due for a letdown after their ring ceremony.
I think it shows that the Lakers can win without Pau versus the bad teams in the league but need Gasol to win against the good teams in the league.

Farmar, Vujacic, and Walton have looked horrendous this year. i know it has only been two games but do you really think they are better than marquis daniels and eddie house in their roles? can they compete with mason, hill , and manu? i think the lakers need to seriously consider upgrading. hinrich from chicago would be a GREAT fit. morrison and farmar expiring deals.....make something work... farmar is not the answer. HE SUCKS

Farmar needs to get a hold of his ego. Shannon Brown comes in knocks down two threes. I remember this play clearly. someone kicks it out to farmar on the left wing and someone starts to come at him and shannon is wide open in the corner. farmar shoots it. farmar is a bum he switches to smsush parker's former number because he is smush parker.

Jordan Farmar wears number 1. Smush Parker wore number 1. Jordan Farmar equals to Smush Parker.

They both shoot inconsistently. No leadership skills. Think they are better than they are. Turnover prone.

JORDAN FARMAR = SMUSH PARKER.

BTW What the heck did farmar do this summer. his free throw shooting still sucks. it is under fifty percent and he wants to be a starting point guard playing at the end of games. tell him to learn how to make free throws first

Hello Blog, it's just one loss but what has become quite clear is that we were lucky KG was out last year. I still don't think we can beat the Celtics in a 7 game series and we were lucky that they weren't at full strength last year.

And this year, they are at full strength and more. We are the Lakers and we have a good team but the Celtics just play clearly team basketball better than anyone in the NBA.

I'm giving an early prediction. We play Cleveland or Orlando then we will win another NBA title.

We play the C's, Celtics will win.

Phil "STUP#%) " Jackson lost it by leaving Sasha in there instead of Shannon. Please don't play Sasha he's freaking pathetic... I'm not a Sasha fan . Hey Phil do you think Shannon would beat Sasha 1 on 1. Well well well, I thought so. C'mon please stop these stupid games with a mediocre player. Sasha had his year 2 years ago. He's not NBA material in my opinion. He's a garbage type player and that's that! Shanon's year is this year. We know you have a friggin mancrush on vjuaachick but just cuz you do does not make him any better. Luke is chemistry. Sasha is antimater. Shannon plays better d and it looks like chemistry wise he's clicking on all gears. You can sit Shannon for Fisher from now on thank you sir.

Kinda like last year for you, KG is hurt, Orlando got all the calls, it's only one year , blah blah blah ; )

Our best line up will be Bynum, Gasol. Artest, Kobe and Brown. Posting up Bynum
The reserves team should be Gasol, Odom, Walton, Sasha and Fisher posting up Gasol. Sasha and Fisher need to hit their 3's. Walton needs to pass, not shoot, his range is 3 ft if were lucky.

We need to step up our defense, without that we don't repeat

tomK - kinda like TWO years ago -
Bynum was out
We didn't have Ariza - blah blah blah

Our best line up will be Bynum, Gasol. Artest, Kobe and Brown. Posting up Bynum
The reserves team should be Gasol, Odom, Walton, Sasha and Fisher posting up Gasol. Sasha and Fisher need to hit their 3's. Walton needs to pass, not shoot, his range is 3 ft if were lucky. - tomK

It's no wonder you lost last night!! Pau Gasol is so good, he both starts and comes off the bench.
Hey, great post tom - I really learned a lot about your basketball IQ on that one, thanks!!

==================
Great idea PJ don't have to tell these guys to attack the basket. Fire him and save 12 million dollars and let players figure it out. Or have PJ earn that 12 million and coach.

Well I know it's only second game and improvements need to be made.We had 2 new starters playing so chemistry not there yet and no ships have been won in October so no matter how good ceptics playing now it is end of season to be peaking.

PJ has to coach and we need to improve bench or get to playing how they can consistently play and are capable of doing.

Just was such a frustrating loss to see the way they played without real effort last night.
