Fight the power

By now, most fans know about the league directive requiring bench players to sit when not engaged in spontaneous celebration or checking into a game. I like the rule, though it will cost the game some beautiful moments, including the tradition of standing until teammates have dropped their first bucket of the game.

Not to worry. The Lakers showed Thursday night in Anaheim an ability to honor that moment with creativity and style (and show a sense of film literacy at the same time). Keep an eye on the bench in the footage below:

Clearly Josh Powell was somewhere else when they rehearsed, but they still earn high marks for execution.

In other news, if you missed it, here's the LAT report on the Bynum and Gasol injuries.

Nice game last night guys..Thank goodness for TNT and the NBA Pkg...Good morning to all! Mamba Brother, how bout a little roll call

I never thought this would be possible but..........LUKE WALTON IS SLOWER THAN HE WAS LAST YEAR!!

Luke looked absolutely horrible last night as he crept closer to his 30th birthday. This clown has FOUR MORE GUARANTEED YEARS ON HIS CONTRACT! Unbelievable!!

Watching Mbenga last night was great as he is a better defensive center than Bynum or Gasol right now as he patroled the paint and contested EVERY shot that came in the lane...............and just think there were actually people (AK, BK) that thought Chris Mihm should have been ahead of Mbenga in the rotation last year........by the way........where is Chris Mihm? Oh I know.....he's the same place Luke Walton would be if the Lakers cut or traded him.........OBSCURITY!!

I got 2 words for ya.

I'm back

Mamba24,

Please add me to the Impeach David Stern band wagon. I can't count the number of posts I've contributed here calling out the commissioner for his undisguised bias. Glad to see other bloggers drawing the line.

Clearly Josh Powell was somewhere else when they rehearsed, but they still earn high marks for execution. BK

Come on give the kid a break could it be he was doing the right way and all the others were off? ROFLMFAO!!

Bill Simmons column is very good: (Link below is for part 2)

I _LOVE_ IT!

LOL

That would explain why Jordan Farmar kept insisting I refer to him as Ricky Vaughn.

AK

Oh yeah, 28 Assists on 36 scores. We're looking pretty damn good here, Lakers.

More Major League, really.

BK

With all the props on Bynum and more hopes on Pau, we have forgotten the all around utility Belgian-Congo Wall, DJ Mbenga. Put Socks on the reserve and Pau on street clothers, let's start DJ on Tuesday. S & P are our offensive threats but they are made of marshmallows and ice cream cones, we need DJ doesn't get injured, doesn't buckle down, low maintenance, low profile but favorite of the masses. Bynum is a high maintenance player like a Ferrari need to be displayed but untouchable. Every time Drew reaches his peak and about to be endorsed to the All Star team, he gets injured. DJ was embarrassed by Griffin last week, then gets back on Thursday w/ 7 blocks more than what Bynum made throughout all preseason. Bynum should contemplate now on hiring DJ and learn how to block shots without getting fouled. LMAO!

Marbury keep tweeting about the Celtics and that fake Pierce...haha!!. My question is would Marbury or Shaq come in first place for destroying a team all by themselves?

Wow, no offense to the nice guy who does the earnest yet dull Dodger blog, the K brother's really do it right and this is the best sports blow around. Well written. Witty. Timely. Insightful. Hip even!

Glad the season is starting.

I have the weird sensation that we haven't seen any real display of Lakers D so far (except for the Mblocks).
Remember last year: we did an ok preseason, but the first regular games we were shutting opponents off. Well, then we lost our remote in the "unpredictable" position (that tended more towards the Off position).
Are we going to see that again?

GO LAKERS!!!

Read on Truehoop that Cleveland and Denver are interested in trading for Stephen Jackson....

I don't any part of Stephen Jackson here. None.

I hate the rule.

Stern is trying to turn a sporting event into dinner theatre. Just lame. More stupid rules that favor lazy rich people.

i JUST FIGURED OUT WHO "REDS LOVE CHILD IS", IT'S BILL SIMMONS. SERIOUSLY. Read carefully his comments aboout Laker fans and Septic fans hating each other. It is almost word for word what RED wrote one day. Either that or Simmons is just the Dummy and Red is the real brains behind the column. Now champ get some rest. 2 Knockouts in .002 seconds yesterday deserves a vacation. Don't let these Trolls bait you into divulging any more of your MARTIAL BLOG ARTS secrets.

LUKE WALTON IS SLOWER THAN HE WAS LAST YEAR!!
Pfunk36
And yet we did win the Title with him didn't we? Before this season is over all you Luke haters are going to be damn glad we got him. Look at all the minor injuries happening, anyone of them could have just as easily been major. I'll take the Laker squad as it intact.

JQ, MOM Kamenetzky is the reason this Blog is hip.

mamba24,
"Septic fans "
Is the place where they all gather called the "Septic Tank"?

Luke comes back from injury and he's SLOWER ? If he goes any slower he will be going backwards.
We better sign Gaffney, he runs the triangle well, is WAY better at defense, is high energy, blocks shots, plays well without the ball, and scores when needed.

exheldovr,

Bill Simmons is a tool, but I thoroughly enjoyed the article.

"8. Shaquille O'Neal
Red flag No. 1: He's 835 pounds. Red flag No. 2: He has never successfully pulled off the whole "sidekick" thing; even to the bitter end, he was playing the big brother/little brother routine with Dwyane Wade. Red flag No. 3: He's splitting time with Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who might be a better fit for this particular team because of his outside shooting. Red flag No. 4: He has never, ever, ever, not in his entire life, played for a coach as offensively challenged as Mike Brown. Red flag No. 5: He doesn't have the luxury of Phoenix's training staff anymore. Red flag No. 6: He's so fat that it's like looking at one of those TVs where the HD is screwed up so it makes everyone seem wider. Red flag No. 7: The Suns traded him for two guys who they immediately bought out for a combined $14 million. Red flag No. 8: They are better off if he's playing 15-20 minutes a game and that's it. Red flag No. 9: He's so fat that it's possible Delonte West was packing three guns because he got confused and thought Shaq wanted to eat him. Red flag No. 10: He's awfully close to some records, which will make it awkward if Cleveland tries to reduce his playing time."

Bill Simmons sees what I see.

I mean, do people really think this is going to work out? This is just another example of crazy Ohio thinking that comes with a nine-month lack of sunlight. Crazy decisions happen that make sense at the time, but really don't make sense as soon as you get on a plane to some place that actually has sunlight.

and btw: Simmons didn' t even look to see that Sasha, "the self proclaimed, machine", had cut his hair. Another missed stat.

Mamba24,

"i JUST FIGURED OUT WHO "REDS LOVE CHILD IS", IT'S BILL SIMMONS. SERIOUSLY."

Stranger things have happened in this world.

I find Bill Simmons' hatred for Sasha Vujacic and Luke Walton to be utterly entertaining. He really hates good looking white guys for some reason. In his heart he probably realizes that Sasha and Luke probably get more tail in the city of good-looking people that he could ever fantasize about.

Not only are they Lakers, but they are enjoying life.

Something about other people enjoying life must just drive a troll like Simmons utterly crazy. He's made a living out of complaining and there are people out there who are better looking than him enjoying life.

It's the kind of subject matter that haunts his dreams at night.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Speaking as a guy who had seats right behind the warriors at the game in the forum I can see why they don't want players standing befor the frst shot is made. Its a pain in the butt when have vendors, security and regular folks walking in front of you line of site during the game. Now imagine those same folks being 6'3'' to 7'1''. If you pay top dollar you want to see the game not the players backs. During TO's I never saw the lakers girls once because the players were standing getting the next play call from don nelson or argueig with nelson if your stephen jackson

Mamba24,

Sir I'm am sorry to say you have it all wrong actually this is the way it should read:
What do we play for? Lazy rich people!!!

Mamba 24,

You just blew my cover!!!!

Why, Mamba, why?!?!?!

Walton is slower this year? Excellent!! He has gotten progressively slower over the past several years, while the Lakers have done progressively better over the same period. That means they'll only lose 3 games total in the playoffs this year, and by the time he retires, the Lakers will be winning 178 games per season!!

This made my day.

Those fans who communicate with the Kamenetsky blog on behalf of the Celtics (or other teams) are appreciated and enjoyed, reminding me that since sport is fundamentally unimportant, we are free to overreact and have fun doing so. Don't let possessive Laker bloggers keep you from injecting yourselves into the Kamenetsky conversation. I often scroll until I come upon one your offensively witty tags.
Keep them coming! (FTR: this writer has been a "Lagunero" since that April when Elgin blew his knee out against Bullets.)

Hey Everyone,

I agree with Mamba on Bill Simmons being Reds love child, they write in ways that deceitfully seem correct, yet you know they are lies, and at least they both have the guts to call out KG's knees as worry factors. read for yourself the excerpt i pulled from espn regarding our beloved Lakers....and a not so beloved Khloe Kardasshian. Mamba, i salute you for looking into this with me.....

Raise your hand if you're excited about Khlomar! (Happily raising hand.) Look, I don't have much ammo for the teams I hate right now. The Colts have been ruined for me; Peyton Manning has become such a monolith of clutchness that I can't even toss grenades at him; if anything, I respect the hell out of him. The Yankees are pulling for each other, slamming shaving pies into faces and looking unbeatable; even worse, it's the kind of likable, quirky (albeit, expensive) team that the Red Sox once had before they dumped their front office, ignored human intuition, decided that "business-like" was better than "personable," and used complicated statistical engines to assemble their 2009 roster. (Wait, we didn't do that? It just seemed like it. Sorry.) So really, hating the hateable Lakers is all I have left.

And you know what else? It's fun to have teams that you hate. I hate Sasha Vujacic's hair. I hate the fact that women like Luke Walton. I hate their uniforms. I hate when Pau Gasol gets excited and does that thing where he barks with his hands at his sides as his ugly beard drips sweat over everyone. I hate not being able to hate Derek Fisher. I love being able to hate Kobe, who has brought me more hateable joy than anyone else this decade. (But damn, is that guy good. I do respect him.) I hate Laker fans who show up for Clipper games and only start making noise when the Lakers go up double-digits. I hate the fact that D.J. Mbenga has a publicist. I could go on and on.

I would hope that the Laker fans are OK with this. I would hope they hate the Celtics just as much, for reasons that are just as personal to them. That's what makes the rivalry great -- we hate them., they hate us, and somehow, the hatred is deepining, in a good way. After all, it's just sports. I don't REALLY hate anyone. (Well, except for Vujacic. If he was crossing the street on one of those crosswalks where you have to stop until the person passes, I'd like to think that I wouldn't run him over, but I would definitely glance around to see how many people were looking before I made a final decision.) So that's what makes me so happy that the Lakers added not just the black sheep Kardashian sister, but...

3a. Ron Artest
… the looniest player in the history of the league! As they're defending a title! And even better, every Laker fan thinks he's an upgrade over Trevor Ariza! Really? That's what you think? You really think that?

True story: I had some friends in town for my birthday weekend last month. We were flipping channels during halftime of a college football game looking for something to watch, eventually stumbling across TMZ, which had just come back from commercial and had Ron Artest in their office. Why? We had no idea. We watched for five mesmerizing minutes as Ron chimed in with thoughts during the staff meeting and answered questions about Lamar Odom's engagement. He had one of those "This is cool, I always wanted to be on this show!" glows. Nobody in the room said a peep. We were riveted. It was the single weirdest cameo I have ever seen on a TV show -- even weirder than Brian Grazer's cameo on "Entourage." There was just no explanation for it.

When it was over, my friend Jacoby said, "This is just gonna get better and better and better every week, isn't it?"

Yes. Yes, it is.

Mamba 24, You just blew my cover!!!! Why, Mamba, why?!?!?!

Pre-season stats for Andrew:

#4 in scoring
#3 in Efficiency

Has anybody told Kobe he is now the 2nd option?

Yes, I did! And then I told them to "SHIP HIS AZZ"

I thought Bynum was a foul waiting to happen? Pre-Season...

Bynum averaging 2.5 fouls in 30 minutes
Kobe is at 2.7 fouls in 27 minutes

I think the reaching fouls have disappeared for Andrew. Helps when you have a strong knee and able to move again.

I do think Simmons does write some entertaining articles. His anti-Lakers bias will never go away, I understand that.

But every time I read an article by him, I wonder if he is like the guy in Clockwork Orange, sitting in front of a tv with his eyes propped open. All he references is tv, movies and TMZ Hollywood gossip. Does he do anything? Get out of the house? Experience real things or just what he sees on the tv? He says he's married, with a child or children, but I have to wonder if he spends any time with them. It seems like his life is sports on tv, Clipper games and more crap on tv.

But maybe he only sleeps 3 hours a night and has time to watch every tv program on.

LA Lakers 2009 NBA Champions

Mamba24 - please add me to the 'impeach Stern' bandwagon as well. It's time for the simpering fool to be put out to pasture.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not a hater, of any team or any player. LeBron's good and one of the best in the game today. But, I just don't see him as one of the all-times. Not yet anyway. He's a star, not a legend.

Re: Stephen Jackson, add my voice to the chorus of 'no's'.

Re: the Lakers bench toe-dancing - awesome!

This is my inaugural post, beings that I just can't take it anymore.

I am assuming the TNT/Kcal double-shot last night was a pre-season only viewing? Bummer. It was great to have the choice to listen to our Stu/Joel team rather than be stuck with the National TV so called "hoops gurus". I wish it would happen during the regular season as well.

I usually cannot stand TNT's "game-time" coverage, and I have a really hard time when Collins believes whatever God-awful rubbish he's spewing forth is more important than the viewers getting a good size viewing of the game being played. Shrinking the size of the game in progress to unwatchable size while we get to see instead some unimportant gobbledeegook type of stat is RIDICULOUS!

I also wanna know when substitutions are made, who's coming/leaving, (yes, even when it's not Kobe), instead of some obscure story about an injury report from some team in the East that nobody watching THIS GAME cares about.

Sometimes I think Doug Collins just likes to hear himself talk.

Also... when is TNT gonna get the hint and start cutting off East Coast games that are runaways in favor of the already-started West Coast game, instead of forcing us to watch 3 minutes of garbage ball and then a mundane interview with LeBron, complete with all the canned answers we hear every single day? I love ya Cheryl Miller, but it's NOT important for me to hear your interview when my boys are currently 3 or 4 minutes into their game.
Perhaps some equal time might be a good compromise? You cut off the West Coast game plenty, so maybe when it's a blowout, the East Coast game could be chopped as well? Ya think? Yeah I know... probably not.

I think we were spoiled with Chick and Stu, and I still think we're spoiled with Stu & Joel... the rest is just... the rest.

Hopefully we'll get that same choice of networks more often this season, although I know it probably was just a pre-season fluke.

I'll take OUR guys over TNT's "talk-boxes" any day.

...The General Speaketh.

"Did somebody tell Kobe Bryant he is now the second option?"

Must be fun Friday here in LA. This kind of stuff you just can't get at any Comedy Shop. Do you guys make this stuff up as you go??

Kobe Bryant will NEVER be the second option on ANY team.
#1 He has the ball too much
#2 He won't allow it

Call it pride, call it ego, call it.............fill in your own adjective.
Even Celtics fans know - Kobe doesn't like being second fiddle, and, therefore, he never will be.

Keep up with the jokes, though, guys, this is funny stuff!!

Still don't know if it's a good thing or not to have your best player's nickname be that of a snake.

Magic Johnson - the rattler
Kareem - the boa
Jerry, the "Anaconda" West
nah, doesn't work. Sounds more like the Rogues Gallery of Villains from the old BATMAN TV series.

Ex,
[Phil: Look, I really want to get Bynum more involved in our offense in November and December. It's a good thing, Kobe. Just trust me. We run everything through him for 42 minutes. You take over for the last six.
Kobe: C'mon, we did this last season. Then he got hurt, I took over and our team took off. Why go through the charade again?
Phil: Because you're still two titles behind MJ?
Kobe: That's your big motivational move with me now, huh?
Phil: Hey, he told me himself -- "Tell Kobe to call me when he gets to six."
Kobe (eyes narrowing): He said that?
Phil: Yup. He said he can't even take you seriously until you win two more.
Kobe: Really?
Phil: Yup. That's why we need Bynum right now. The Pechonkamappadosa tribe has a phrase for this called, "Kakaboomaka." It means, "To share the credit without giving up credit with those who matter." I just want to build his confidence up and save your legs. We put a ton of miles on those babies these past two years -- 208 games. This is good for you.
Kobe: Lemme think about it.
(Kobe leaves. Phil turns to Shaw.)
Phil: This is too easy.
]

Yup the Simmon's post is hilarious. I want to hate on him for hating on Kobe, but I laughed so I'll just go punish myself instead

The way LO is hitting the 3 this year Kobe might be the 3rd option if he doesn't pick it up. haha!

"Sometimes I think Doug Collins just likes to hear himself talk."-General Hooper

I usually like Doug Collins as a color man, but last night he was way off his game. He's usually very informative with his analysis. Last night, he was rambling, saying a lot of dumb stuff. It was like he was drunk or something.

As for the game last night, MBenga played well. he's an exciting guy to watch play. He challenges everything, even if he's about to get the ball bashed right in his face. I like that. K-Mart was challenging him last night and MBenga took him out. I bet K-Mart won't challenge MBenga like that again.

Go Lakers!

General Hooper,

"I'll take OUR guys over TNT's "talk-boxes" any day. "

You've got it. The TNT guys make the game almost unwatchable.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

segeboy,
When Simmons manages to filter out his bias, or at least 90% of it, he is a great writer.

His segment on Garnett was pretty realistic (which I was not anticipating).

pfunk36

I wouldn't have it any other way.

That is a most excellent response to the leagues (silly) rule. Nice footage someone. Even nicer play.

Major League has been on all over the place the last couple of weeks. Awesome!

At this rate, I'd rather have Stalin run the NBA...he was all about people dancing and applauding him for hours upon hours (or they would be shot and their families would migrant to the Tundra)

This rule IMO is unequivocally stupid...he's sapping the excitement out of the game. David Stern is dead wrong on this one.

Btw...Mbenga's one great game isn't enough for people to be heralding him the future of the Lakers...I hope you guys were being sarcastic. He is however, more capable than Kwame Brownifide-Scrub. His shot is pretty sweet...

i liked the bench dance but hope it is limited to pre season. I can remember Cavs doing all their shows and they looked extremely annoying and stupid especially after losing to Magic to get to finals.

Hope the Lakers bring inrtensity instead of sideline stunts.

Go for the jugglar I say.
