Cava for all the people!

Spain beats Serbia 83-65 to take the EuroBasket championships.

Pau Gasol is awarded tournament MVP, no surprise given his team's result and his statistical output, and emerges without any problems in his surgically repaired left index finger.

Everyone wins here, I'd say. Except Serbia, I guess.

UPDATE (10:30 am): The Painted Area has a great post putting the tournament in the context of Pau's larger career, both in the NBA and in international play. Gasol's resume is growing increasingly impressive, to put it mildly. Well worth the read.

Great job for Pau. Although I had reservations about him playing in the tournament, it still is a good way for him to stay in shape and rhythm. This performance should also boost his confidence.

What are you talking about! Pau didn't win. His meager 57% shooting in the final earned him a mere silver medal in shooting percentage for the tournament, leaving him with a piddling 64.4 to Omer Asik's (Turkey) whopping 66.7%.

I think Laker Nation should be worried for the coming season. While we might be reasonably happy with a field goal percentage of 64.4%, his free throw percentage was significantly lower at 64.3%. Get ready for hack-a-Pau!

Actually I watched the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the game. The Spaniards were pretty incredible and Ricky Rubio was impressive. Too bad Rambis won't have him in the lineup. But when Pau was resting on the bench, particularly at the beginning the 2nd quarter, the Serbs started making a run. The Spanish coach had to put Pau back in prematurely and suddenly the lead of around 12 doubled. Same story in the 3rd quarter.

In other words, Pau dominated. He was literally in a different league!

As a Lakers fan congratulations to Pau. Statistics is not all, he is the glue for such an incredible group of players. What a defense, what intensity. I hope next time Spain matches up with USA in the w0rld championship next year it gets even closer than in the Olympics. It will be another match to remember for years. Nobody else can throw some shadows over team USA

Good. Finally Pau can rest for a bit.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!!

Congrats Pau! Just remember, the US is number 1.

And, you will never beat us.

Enjoy your transient glory. :P

I root for all Lakers, so GOOoooOOO PAU !!!

Do we have a bad azz on our team or what?

This championship for a Laker is a great prequel to our season. People have to know we are a top caliber team. They are now quaking and thinking "Lakers = champion," "Lakers = champion," over and over.

BRING IT ON !!!!

GOOOOooooOOOO LAKERS !!!!

Serbia is drinking cava too, a silver medal versus Spain is a thing to celebrate. And of course LAkers fans, because they have the FIBA World championship 07 and Eurobasket MVP 09.
With future NBA MVP numbers, with Kobe allowance, of course.

The unique bad stat is free throw %, because his injured fingers in first matches, but it will be around 80% again.

I hpe we will enjoy LAkers new ring this season.

Am I reading the stats correctly in that Pau had 9 3 POint attempts and made 4? Why don't we see some more of that?

Kudos for Pau and hope he does not get injured anymore.

LakerTom I like the idea of Odom at the point but not as regular rotation but as a situational sub against slower taller stocky pgs rather than the small quick ones or when the quick ones are in the game. When the smaller pgs sub out then Odom could dominate backup. That way he can still get pt and still be taller to post up pg and defend them.

I alwys feel it is team game and use all your tools or players for the job needed to be done.

Not too shabby a performance from Juan Carlos Navarro either! Not for nothing, but given that Memphis have effectively renounced their rights to him, I would hope that the Lakers would be taking a serious look at him.

Good for Pau. I'm not a big fan of guys playing in these games (ask Pops how he feels about Ginobli). But this was a chance for Pau to show what he is made of.

Pau is underrated, he is not recognized as the elite player he is. The way his game sometimes looks blinds people to the efficiency of his offense game, the determination of his defense and the consistency of his rebounding. Sometimes is looks ugly, but this dude plays hard and smart and has skills. He did a great job last year even while playing out of position at center for much of the time. There are not too many guys who could play that well out of position.

There are 2 irreplaceable Lakers. Kobe and Pau. Without Kobe, Pau could not take the Lakers to the title. But the reverse is true as well. Kobe could not raise the Lakers above mediocrity without a player like Pau. No question Kobe is the leader on the Lakers, but Pau is the most efficient and consistent player on the team, and statistically he actually is the most productive.

congrat Pau. An NBA and a EuroTrash hoop title in one year. Now come home and ready to defend that NBa title.

Laker Question Marks volume 2

Who the hell is Shannon Brown?

Shannon Brown is one of the most intriguing guys coming into camp this year, especially with Derek Fisher getting older. Though Fish's decline is probably greatly exagerated. He played all 82 games last year and his numbers were right in line with his career averages. He just slumped at a bad time, in the early rounds of the playoffs. Still, his decline could come any day.

Brown looks like a great fit for Phil Jackson and LA. 6'4" tall. Crazy athletic skills. Came to the Lakers and shot 52% from the field and a ridiculous 67% from the 3 point line in 18 games. Has a mindset for defense to go with his athleticism. He earned some serious playoff burn with his play, and in the early rounds he looked good, though he dropped off a bit in later rounds. Plenty of Laker fans are ready to hand the PG job right now.

But there are questions. In 3 years of pro ball he's racked up some serious frequent flyer miles. Cleveland Cavaliers. Albuquerque Thunderbirds. Rio Grande Vipers. Chicago Bulls. Charlotte Bobcats. LA Lakers. He's moved around like he's Larry Brown, and not by choice.

He's averaged 10 minues per game. He's put up 0.7 assists PPG, (his assists were even lower as a Laker). That projects to about 2.2 per game with 32 minutes of PT. Hardly PG numbers, even if the Triange is not a PG offense. It brings his basic PG skills into question. His 3 point shooting % in Charlotte, before coming to LA, was 29%, and his careeer % is 33%, a far cry from what he put up in his short LA stint. Which is the real Shannon Brown?

Look, the guy was good pickup. He is athletic, plays defense and is a good piece off the bench. There is no question there. The question is, can be a front of the rotation player? After other teams have scouted him and play him smarter, will he still be as effective as he was in his early games as a Laker. Is there a reason he is so well travelled? In other words, do Cleveland, Chicago and Charlotte know something the Lakers don't, or is it the other way around? Does he have basic PG skills of ball handling and, more important, running the offense?

If Shannon Brown grows as a player, like Ariza did, and learns triange PG skills from B Shaw and D Fish, and has the head to play that role, this could be a huge steal and he could be the heir to the job.

If he is just an athetic young guy with energy he makes a nice piece off the bench but the Lakers have to keep looking for their PG of the future. And the future could be soon if Fish stumbles.

Shannon will be an interesting guy to watch as this season gets going.

Navarro is making too much money in the Spanish League. i think he's one of the top paid players.

There is probably no way that he can come to the Lakers. Not with the lakers well into the tax threshold, and not with his salary.

Now he gets to walk into the Laker locker room, walk up to Kobe and say, "Oh, you were Finals MVP of America...that's cool, good job, really good job, man. Me? Oh, well I have this little WORLD FINALS MVP Trophy that comes with a decoder ring, a cup holder and it also hold chips and dip!"

Now I ask you, who wouldn't want a trophy (cruch, crunch mm I LOVE chips) like that?

Seriously, Pau is the man, I said it when he first got here and I'll say it into the future, he is the perfect addition to our team.

Pau is better than the league gives him credit for. Arguably the best power forward in the league, but probably the most versatile and most skilled true big in the league.

I don't think we've seen the best of Gasol yet. He and Kobe are still learning how to optimize their combined games (which ought to be scary for the rest of the league.)

The willingness, and ability, of Bynum and Artest to fit in around Gasol and Bryant will be a big factor in the level of success next season.

TD

Absodamnlutely, as great as Pau is, he's underrated. AND...

Shannon Brown is a great question. If Ron Harper is the quintessential Phil PG, he's a natural to play the part. You gotta like his Chicago south side D. Other than that, hit an open 3 when you get one and your Laker duties are fulfilled. No need to create your shot, dribble penetrate, or dominate your defender. Those roles are covered. Take the assists the triangle creates, fill the lane, finish the break, d up, man up, shut up.

Having said that, the Farm has obviously got grey matter between those ears and Shannon probably finishes second in a debate. So who should start? Good question but does it matter? As long as Phil can spot substitute according to size and speed of opposing guard, he should take advantage of the luxury with FIsh in the end game of big games. As long as all 3 are in uniform, that's undoubtedly the way it will play.

Another question: Sasha as PG? It's how he began. He might give it a try before he becomes the first player injured by blog bashing.

jamie sweet,

[Now he gets to walk into the Laker locker room, walk up to Kobe and say, "Oh, you were Finals MVP of America...that's cool, good job, really good job, man. Me? Oh, well I have this little WORLD FINALS MVP Trophy that comes with a decoder ring, a cup holder and it also hold chips and dip!"]

First off let me say out freaking standing job by Pau ... sasha you taking notes? this is how champions roll

2ndly, slow your roll jamie. Mr Pau is rocking "euro" not "world" mvps. If it's a tourney Kobe's playing in, chances are he's going to be flanked by dwayne wade and lebron james. Gasol wants no part of that, but in case you missed it go rewatch the last olympics finals. Nuff said.

Re: the previous thread...

Well played, phred.

Incidentally, I once dated a girl in college who was a big Leonard Cohen fan. Turned out she was a little to angst-y for my tastes. It just wasn't going to work out.

BTW, my wife heard the YouTube clip you passed along from across our place. "Who died," she asked?

I think Sasha as 'point' or guard other than Kobe will only be plausible if he does a number of things:

1) get his shot back to keep his defender honest and to provide spacing
2) is quick enough to provide transistion defense that we lost with Ariza
3) is a smart defender as opposed to an intense defender.
4) most importantly, get his confidence back.

I say most importantly because more than anything, a steady hand is needed at point. Regardless of the oft-said notion that the triangle doesn't need a point guard, it still needs a guy up there that can put it together and think about the entire floor game.

to put it into perspective, look at the guys Phil has had at lead guard for the past 7 championships he's coached.

Ron Harper, Brian Shaw, Fish, Kobe, Lindsey Hunter. I don't Phil nor I for that matter trust Sasha to be steady, smart, clutch when called upon, or a counterbalance against Kobe's furious brilliance. Sasha has deficiencies compared to those guys.

Good morning CRUE!!!

Congrats to our very own PAU GASOL!! Woo hoo!!! I'm very happy for him, and also very happy for the Lakers that he isn't hurt bad enough to affect our season. Come home, Pau and get some rest - we need you for the REPEAT!!

Our team is going to be scary good this year - can't you just feel it???

October 7th can't come soon enough....

LAMAR ODOM, THE LAKERS NEXT POINT GUARD…

Take the Lakers current starting lineup and substitute Lamar Odom for Derek Fisher at point guard. That would give the Lakers a starting fivesome of Lamar, Kobe, Drew, Pau, and Ron. Now I am not actually proposing that the Lakers actually consider Odom as their next starting point guard. In truth, his play and role backing up Pau at power forward is too valuable. But I would love to see it.

Rather, I am suggesting that another way to get Lamar additional minutes and opportunities and to provide the Lakers with another strong weapon is to have him spend time backing up at point guard. That would help make up for minutes he will lose to Bynum and would create nightmare matchups for other teams to deal with. It’s possible that we might see enough to want to consider it permanently.

What advantages and disadvantages do the Lakers realize by subbing Odom for Fisher? Offensively, Lamar is as good a ball handler and passer as Fisher and would have no problem bringing the ball up the court and setting up the offense. He is probably not as proficient a 3-point shooter but that is more than offset by his ability to post up smaller players for easy baskets and dunks in the paint.

Defensively, I seriously think the Lakers could potentially be better with Odom at point versus Fisher. Lamar’s height and length could be a serious problem for many point guards because he can play off of them which makes it easier to stay between the dribbler and the basket. Can he be beaten by quick fast point guards? Sure but so can Fish as we have unfortunately seen too many times.

It will be interesting to see how Lamar’s career progresses now that he has signed a new contract. The way I see it, the Lakers have three realistic options moving forward to resolve the issue of Derek Fisher’s successor. First, they stick with Jordan Farmar and/or Shannon Brown, realizing that the cannot pay a superstar at every position. Second, they go out and trade for or sign a free agent point guard, again realizing their payroll limits how much they can pay a point guard.

Or third, they can seriously consider re-allocating their resources and give Lamar the green light to release his inner Magic Johnson. Think about it. Magic in many ways was a point guard in a power forward’s body. In a way, that is also true of Lamar Odom, who is even 3 inches taller than Magic. Thinking outside the box could create the biggest and longest starting lineup in Lakers history.

Crazy or crazy smart? More Lamar, Kobe, Drew, Pau, and Ron. Tall ball always beats small ball.

Tom

LakerTom's thirst to see Odom at the PG stems more from his yearning for guaranteed playing time for Drew than for the betterment of the team.

It's been said before, and it's worth repeating: LakerTom's X & O analysis of Basketball is one that leaves alot to be desired. His fanatical attempts to push a barely serviceable center as a franchise cornerstone are laughed at around the league as well as the water cooler.

Just because Andrew is going to have a hard-time securing minutes doesn't mean we should take a championship formula and give it the ol' "Jeff Schwartz" if you know what I mean. (Jeff Schwartz is Trevor Ariza / Bynum's agent; And yes, Ariza could have been signed if he had another agent.)

Also exceedingly disheartening, is 'Laker'Tom's insistence that he is the truest Laker fan and that no one should come before him with any type of rational, unfanatical, average-enthusiast / Laker-lover related stuff.

“Drew Bynum”

He’s a center for the Lakers
He’s a man that LakerTom likes a lot, man
Cause he’s seven foot one of potential, man
When he plays a full season of ball
And Tom’ll tell ya, he’s the man
When he’s throwing down the rock
When he just wears a shower sock
But LakerTom’ll tell ya he knows
But LakerTom’ll tell ya he knows

He’s got a mean vertical, yo
He can convert an alley oop, like so
Cause when the talk begins to flow
When we say let’s trade him, heck
When Blitz likes Odom’s depth
We all take cheap shots, guys.
And y’all Laker girls with all your Sasha love
Y’all can’t touch his love
But LakerTom’ll tell ya he knows
But LakerTom’ll tell ya he knows

He knows that Kobe’s played a thousand games or so
He knows that Pau should be a power forward
When he plays at Big Dipper’s clip
Bowing to the advice of Cap
But sitting in that bunny’s lap
Why can’t all you haters see?
In this big title city
Of all the players of this town
We need a franchise to build around
But LakerTom’ll tell ya he knows
But LakerTom’ll tell ya he knows

Drew Bynum, be the man I love
Drew Bynum, be the center who can shove
Become the main guy of this team
Be the center that we need
And as Chick looks down from above
When Kobe is our best point guard
And when you buy booze they don’t card
Playing in this here title town
And the Kamenetzkys posting random threads
And everybody pushin the buttons in y’alls heads
And we need something to talk about that aint phred

Become the main guy of this team
Be the banger that we need
Ah, when Drew Bynum is in the paint
And ball is in the net
Then thank Jim that we drafted him tenth
And thank Mitch that we traded Kwame
And thank Stern Mike T isn’t here anymore
Cause LakerTom’ll tell ya he knows
Cause LakerTom’ll tell ya he knows

Too bad that AK and BK allow you post using an anonymous name.

Too embarrassed to post under your regular blog name?

>>> LakerTom's thirst to see Odom at the PG stems more from his yearning

Wrong! I want to see the Lakers add another weapon to their repertoire, Lamar get enough minutes to justify his new contract, and the Lakers to test whether Lamar could be the answer to succeed Fish.

>>> It's been said before, and it's worth repeating: LakerTom's X & O analysis

I won’t even comment on your infantile level of understanding of the game. You have obviously never played, refereed, coached, or participated in the game of basketball at any level outside your mind.

>>> His fanatical attempts to push a barely serviceable center as a franchise
>>> cornerstone are laughed at around the league as well as the water cooler.

The only laughter is from people reading your ridiculous post who presume from the tone and content that it was written by Blitz, the blog’s designated Andrew Bynum denigrator and detractor. The Lakers did not sign Drew to a $50M contract because he was “a barely serviceable center.”

>>> Just because Andrew is going to have a hard-time securing minutes doesn't mean we should
>>> take a championship formula and give it the ol' "Jeff Schwartz" if you know what I mean. (Jeff
>>> Schwartz is Trevor Ariza / Bynum's agent.

You should just stick to your juvenile smack because facts only expose you as a fool. David Lee is Andrew Bynum’s and Trevor Ariza’s agent. Jeff Schwartz is Lamar Odom’s agent. Ooops!

>>> And yes, Ariza could have been signed if he had another agent.)

Wrong again. Research the various accounts that have surfaced since. From the instant that the Lakers learned that Ron Artest was willing to sign for the MLE, Trevor Ariza was a goner. In fact, Ariza himself admits that the Lakers NEVER even made an offer to him to remain a Laker. You are deluding yourself to believe that the Lakers would have signed Ariza if he had a different agent because the game was over before Lee even had a chance to negotiate with the Lakers.

>>> Also exceedingly disheartening, is 'Laker'Tom's insistence that he is the truest Laker fan and

I never claimed I was a better or smarter Lakers fan than anybody else on the blog but you may have given me reason to change my mind: Bynum is “a barely serviceable center?” Ariza would have signed with a different agent? You probably also believe that Shannon Brown is a point guard, Sasha Vujacic plays good defense, Pau Gasol is a franchise player, and LeBron James is the greatest player ever.

>>> This is guy is the Rob Blegoyavich* (spelled incorrectly as per CNN) of our Laker
>>> congress guys. As Kobe would say: "SHIP HIS *** OUT!"

Wow. That really hurt. I don’t know whether I will have the nerve to respond. For the record, you seem to have forgotten Kobe stating that Andrew is what made the Lakers a championship caliber team, Jerry West saying that the development of Drew made the Lakers the best team, and Phil stating that Andrew is the one player who is capable of transforming the Lakers defense. All before the Lakers even traded for Pau Gasol.

Tom

Odom is NOT as good a ball handler as Fisher, WOULD have problems bringing the ball up court if guarded by a PG/SG.

Where do you all come up with these pg suggestions?
Why don't we just get Chris Paul when he becomes free? Cuz we can't, so stop making dumb suggestions ok!

I LOVE YOU PAU!!!!!!11111!!11!

LakerTom,

Is the idea of using Odom at PG built over a secret agenda of yours, which would get your boy Bynum get more play time?? (LO moves to PG, so Bynum will have to only contend with Mbenga as center and very less with Pau - since Pau will be playing PF most of times)

I strongly smell of that. Anyone else who agrees with me on LakerTom's motives behind the idea??

ex,

>>> Odom is NOT as good a ball handler as Fisher, WOULD have problems bringing the
>>> ball up court if guarded by a PG/SG.

We will have to agree to disagree regarding this. I think Lamar would actually have less problems than Fish bringing the ball up court under pressure. His height and length might even give him a better view of the floor and he is definitely faster with or without the ball than Fisher. Lamar would also be able to better run a fast break than Fish because he can finish at the rim and we all know what usually happens when Fish drives into the paint.

Tom

Hmm wow reading that article on Gasol made me check myself ... he's acknowledged widely on the blogs as the lakers 2nd best player but still there's some sort of idea in the air that he does so by a slight edge ... we figure lamar on his best days is just as talented ... or that a healthy bynum could give us just as much ... or that he's not on the same planet as kobe ...

But if you watched the games last season, you can't help but admit Gasol showed up everytime his number got called ... when we needed him to play hero he was there ... sure he had some bad nights but so does kobe ... without a doubt, this man led us to a championship ... his quiet resilience is an integral part of our team identity now ... a place where we go to when the likes of the celtics come knocking ... when we simply let go and reap the fruits of our labor as our talent shines

That article reminds us that Pau Gasol has already put in a great body of work into basketball, and this run we're about to go on will simply put to rest any debates about whether he's a hall of famer. That man's jersey is going up in the staples rafter, and y'all know that's an even more exclusive club than the hall.

24 + 16 + [1]7 = The Purple Tinted Golden Age

LakerTom,
[Wrong again. Research the various accounts that have surfaced since. From the instant that the Lakers learned that Ron Artest was willing to sign for the MLE, Trevor Ariza was a goner. sigh there u go again leaving out parts of the truth ... various accounts have also said Ariza was the lakers first choice but his agent fumbled the ball ... now i'm not gonna start an argument by tryna say which accounts have the right numbers in it, jus saying your account of the way it went down ain't the only one floating around

LakerDick, I've been enjoying some down time this summer but your post was what it took to get me back in the game. Where did you come from, and what's up with your ad hominem attacks on Tom? Keep that kind of garbage to yourself. You've opened your mouth and revealed yourself to be an appropriately named jerk.

nba4ever,

Actually it is 2006 World Championships MVP ... but yea yo I stand corrected ... Gasol deserves his due, world mvp it is ... got 2 respect that ...

Tom Daniels,

Great post as always.

I'm still skeptical about handing the reigns to Shannon Brown. His lack of passing skills, average to below average ball handling, and his inconsistent jumpshot are concerns of mine when thinking about him as the starting point guard for the Lakers. At this point, I'd be much more comfortable with Jordan Farmar as the starting PG than Shannon Brown.

I think Fisher is still good for another 2-4 years though. That guy is as solid as they come. Fisher will be irreplaceable when he leaves.

Go Lakers!

Segeboy,

No problem. I realize there are some conflicting reports out there but I think it was obvious that the Lakers preferred to see the waters muddied rather than to appear unappreciative of Trevor Ariza’s contribution to the championship by their dumping him to instead sign a controversial player like Ron Artest. In fact, the reports from Ariza himself indicate that the Lakers did NOT make an offer, instead suggested that if Trevor thought he was worth more than the minimum to go out and solicit bids. Of course, before Ariza could even talk to anyone, the Lakers jumped all over Artest, looking to upgrade their starting lineup and defense.

In the end, all David Lee did was walk right into the Lakers trap to get destroyed. In the end, I think it is naïve loyalty to believe that there was ANY chance of Ariza re-signing once the Lakers found out Artest was available. No way they could pass up the defensive player that they had coveted for so long and even considered trading Lamar Odom for at one point in time. Artest was the perfect piece to complete the Lakers dynastic puzzle. No way they were going to sign Ariza once Artest was available.

Yes, my opinion but also supported by most of the accounts as well as logic and common sense.

PAU GASOL – THE PERFECT FIT…

While Pau Gasol showed he is NOT a franchise player during his reign in Memphis, he has also proved that he is clearly a championship level player who is just a perfect fit for the Los Angeles Lakers and a sure bet to make it to the Hall of Fame if he continues to play as greatly as he has the last two seasons.

What makes Pau so invaluable to the Lakers and whatever team he plays for are his unique skill set, his ability to play both power forward and center positions, and his talent for team play. Much like Lamar Odom, Pau’s versatility enables the Lakers to adjust their rotation and play whatever style a particular game demands. Pau can score inside and out, is an excellent passer, and when challenged, has shown the ability to play solid competitive defense. Without a doubt, he has been the #2 player on the Lakers the last two years. Without his contributions, the Lakers would never had made the Finals either year.

I look for Pau to continue his sterling play. I think the addition of Ron Artest and a healthy Andrew Bynum will only magnify Pau’s value to the team. I think we will see more of the toughness that he exhibited during last year’s Finals, especially on defense. Even though I believe Andrew Bynum will become the team’s #2 option this year – just as he was last year for the month of January before his injury – I think much of the offense may actually run through Pau at power forward first because of passing and playmaking ability. One thing is for sure, the Lakers front court this year is going to be much stronger than last year because of a more mature and competitive Pau, a healthy dominating Drew, and an infusion of aggressiveness and toughness from Ron Artest. Throw in Lamar Odom as sixth man and you clearly have the best front court in the NBA.

More Kobe, Lamar, Drew, Pau, and Ron. Lakers rule the paint. Drive for Five for Kobe.

Tom

LakerTom,
No way they could pass up the defensive player that they had coveted for so long and even considered trading Lamar Odom for at one point in time. Artest was the perfect piece to complete the Lakers dynastic puzzle. No way they were going to sign Ariza once Artest was available.

I see it differently but I like your account better and in some sense the mere fact that Artest is here now makes it true that the lakers chose him over Ariza. I like it because it puts the onus on Artest to make that decision the right one.

Here is some breaking news y'all:
http://tiny.cc/7EP7e

Lamar won't be flying single any longer, ladies. Maybe we'll see him on their reality show.

Congrats Lamar, you deserve all the comforts a loving wife can provide. Better learn how to run a lawn mower, though.

Segeboy Formerly Known As Taliq

To be honest, I was just being utterly hilarious in coming up with an idea for a cool trophy that would make anyone jealous. if I had really gotten creative I would've added a hidden beer-cooling compartment in addition to the chips and dip section. Also, it doubles as a camping stool for when you forgot a chair and you're out camping.

I also like the idea of Pau and Kobe trash talking, but to be correct, yes, it was Eurobasketball championship. So Gasol is MVP of a continent and Kobe is MVP of a country. Still a larger land mass and still lidly hilarious as opposed to utterly hilarious.

Besides, who wouldn't want a trophy that you could serve chips and dip in? I can see it now, "Hey man, these chips are great and this dip is outta sight. But Jamie, I was wondering, how did it all end up in this here trophy?" And so on.

See? SEE?????!!!!!

Ahhh, someone's got a case of the Mondays and it's Mistah Sweet.

Jamie - will the trophy slice, dice & make julienne fries?

TALK ABOUT A HOT NEWS DAY…

First, Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian are getting married Sunday after knowing each other for only six weeks. The reason for quick marriage? Lamar starts training camp in 8 days and with the Lakers slated to return to the NBA Finals, the lovebirds decided they couldn’t wait any longer. And the matchmaker in this reality-is-stranger-than-fiction fairy tale is none other than Ron Artest, who introduced the two at a party he hosted six weeks ago. Wonder where Khloe is going to sit.

And speaking of Ron Artest. Today, in his own inimitable style, Ron boldly announced that if the Lakers don’t win the championship again this year, then Lakers fans can blame him. LOL! Leave it to Ron to say what everybody is really thinking. The biggest change in the champs roster was the swap of Trevor Ariza for Ron Artest. You gotta love the backwards guarantee Ron just dropped. If he delivers on the court the way he has off it so far, watch out because Ron is going to be rocking.

And while the rest of the NBA is praying that Andrew Bynum takes another year to develop, leave it to an idiot like Kenyan Martin to stupidly claim that the Nuggets, who did absolutely nothing to improve themselves during the offseason, think they are a better team than the Los Angeles Lakers. Why is it that some guys never learn to keep their mouths shut? You would think they could put one and one together and realize that the fact they’re always mouthing off and have never won might be related.

Only 8 more days until the start of training camp? That seems almost too good to be true. Did you ever notice that bloggers are like players? There are stars and scrubs, rookies and vets, gunners and playmakers, trash talkers and foul callers, chokers and killers, fight starters and peace makers, cheaters and paragons, rally rousers and party poopers, shooters and stoppers, lovers and haters, fans and trolls. And like the Lakers dominate the NBA, the LA Times Lakers Blog rules.

This is the greatest Kobe Youtube video I have ever seen.

AK/BK,

First you starve us of good LO marriage gossip column stuff and now nothing on Kobe's maid? That is top rated stuff! Yes, it is not basketball.

But were Kobe's rape charges? Whatever effects our boys effects the Lakers and our play.

BTW, I am offering a reward to anyone who can dig up dirt on this sleazy money grubbing, no love for the Lakers, maid. She violated her "no talking about what goes on in the Bryant home" clause. She needs to be outed as the scammer she is and get off of our TEAM!!!

Inquiring Lakers fans want to know!

GOOoooOOOO LAKERS !!!!

Lamar and Khloe are getting married, what a dumb move, Odumb should get a prenuptial agreement ,or you will regret.I said it first before Odumb has the lowest IQ, he will be screwed very soon and there will be big distraction in his B-game when they divorce.

" Point right at me,throw tomatoes and everything ....if Lakers don't repeat ..." said Ron Artest.

I almost got into it with lakertom over the summer and I'm glad I didn't cuz he just went at lakerdick like he stole something. LOL. omg, my mouth hurts from smiling so big.

Anyway, I'll just say this. Lakertom your eccentric. Your smart as hell, but in that too smart for your own good way. Fish as coach, bynum as all-star, LO as point over fish? Well let's hope your predictions work because if it happens its a good thing, right? Let's just hope PJ continues forever though, because he's definitely the right guy for the job. As for Bynum, let's just hope he stays healthy.

Oh, and LO as starting PG wouldn't work in a million years. But if it does, I'll be the first one to say LakerTom said so.

Don't hate guys, we all fam...

1. Thriller is awesome.

2. My prediction is that Andrew Bynum will not be as good as Laker Tom expects, but better than everyone else expects.

3. People should lay off of Laker Tom. I find it bizarre when people attack him because it should be 100% clear that Laker Tom is Purple and Gold down to his marrow. Why attack a brother of Laker Nation? He's not a bandwagoneer. He's a true fan. True fans stick together.

4. This whole waiting for training camp thing is killing me.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

I can see that the start of this year's training camp is coming none too soon for this blog. We've got a starting PG controversy where none exists. Ammo and Luke are about the only players yet to be nominated here.

Me, I'm wondering how Khloe Kardashian will fit in with the other Laker wives and girlfriends. Well, Jeanie did pose for Playboy.

RonRon says if the Lakers don't repeat, blame him! I like that. I'm also wondering, who on the Lakers roster now won't be around at the end of the season.

One other thought: I may be alone on this, but I don't like the Euro players participating in off-season tournaments. Sorry. Your day job comes first.

So much for musings. Back to my Lakerholics 12-step program. I've been told I have little chance of graduating. My sponsors say, I've fallen off the wagon and blogged here too many times over the summer. Let them drum me out of the program. My heart just wasn't into the recovery part, anyway. Seriously: Is there a Lakerholic alive who wants to be cured? I don't think so.

AK/BK,

I hope you guys have a change of heart and decide to cover this but . . . NEWS JUST IN !! ODOM TO WED ON SUNDAY !!!

People Magazine reports that,

"The ceremony is being thrown together so quickly that guests are being n
notified by phone that formal invitations will arrive this week, the sources add.

Confirming details first reported by E!, the sources say the couple went ring shopping over the weekend -- and found a sparkler that Kardashian liked.

The couple have been dating for only about a month, but their whirlwind romance is going well.

"They're very, very happy," older sister Kim told People this month. "Khloe thinks he's amazing and makes her laugh and smile constantly."

GUYS IF TWO LAKERS BESIDES ODOM SHOW, WILL YOU COVER IT AS A FEEL GOOD STORY???? IF YOU ARE INVITED WILL YOU TELL US???

Inquiring Lakers fans' minds want to know !

GOOOooOOOOO LAKERS !!!

TSphere, if hack-a-pau comes, we haveM'Benga, only problem is, he might actually kill the guy....

I have pushed for this from the getgo....Odom can bring it up or slow or break speed, hand off to Kobe once across the 1st line in the trangle, then Kobe can organize the offense, or Fsher....Odom ususally has the ball anyhow, with his 10 boards a game average, and if he's needed to do this he will be a monster...remember, make the oppostion adjust to you, don't adjust to them, and the lakers are so versatile, the opposition will never be able to adjust....the triangle offense has finally sunk in, with this group, with great tall passer such as Gasol and Odom, outside threats, KB, Fish, Sasha, Garmar, Crazy 88, I mean Thriller.....Defense first....set a goal, I say the goal is to not let the opposition crack 80 per game. Of course you won't get it most of the time but if you come close, keep them under 92....you will not be beat often.

my reaction to Kenyon Martin's comments?

Puh-Lease!

Lakers are definitely heads and shoulders better (pun intended) read: head, than the nug-nuts.

'Laker'Tom,

"..and the Lakers to test whether Lamar could be the answer to succeed Fish."

Look.

I don't want to be mean, alright? But here's the truth:

Nobody in the Laker organization would or does envision Lamar being the answer at the point, let alone succeeding Derek Fisher.

Where do you get this stuff?

I know on your NBA video games and your NBA-syndicate garage basketball league you can easily thrust Lamar into the point and dominate your short-armed opponents. However, from a Basketball X&O standpoint, you're terribly wrong -- and here's why:

1.) One of the Lakers biggest asset is their 3-man, big-man rotation. Teams have no answer for the depth and attack that the Lakers have inside. Moving Lamar up-top, even for 10 minutes a game would negate the flow and consistency of one of their biggest advantages.

2.) A full-court press would give the Lakers fits. Though there is abundant faith in Phil Jackson, Kobe & Co., to intellectually break down the modren NBA press with great passwork, the results would still cost too much per gain. Kobe having to bring the ball up would cost him energy he needs for late-game situations, and having our the big men scramble up and down the court to beat the press, then find the flow of the triangle and reposition themselves accordingly would be a disaster. Can you imagine Andrew trying to find a spot at mid-court to be the point-passman, and then having to find his spot in the triangle with 14 seconds left on the clock? Anybody!?

3.) Lamar's shooting is not accurate enough to merit the position.

4.) You can't have 5 post-players posting up at once. (This one makes those 'in the know' laugh so hard about LakerTom's assertion. To think that you can just post up everyone, especially when running the Triple-Post offense is... it's just.. I mean.. LMAO!)

5.) The size of unit would decrease the space available on the floor, thus decrease the space available to freely run the triangle, thus decrease the potency of the offense.

6.) Do I have to?

7.) Why keep going when 'Laker'Tom's already been shut down?

Look.

LakerTom.

Next time you have something to say or respond to a person's opinion, come correct.

Because your response was purely political. As is your love and lobbying for Andrew Bynum.

When it comes to Basketball X&O's.

When it comes to game planning.

And winning championships.

Keep the Andrew Bynum posters at home and stay out of the gym.

Thx.

ESPN is reporting more feel good quotes from Artest:

"It makes me more excited, gives me a better understanding of what jersey I'm actually putting on," Artest said. "So today I decided to wear the black Kobe Bryant jersey, because he is the 'Black Mamba,' and I'm really happy to be a part of this team and I'm really excited just to be an addition, an asset, to the guy, to the [Derek] Fishers and the [Andrew] Bynums and all the rest of the players."

He further goes on to say he'll shoulder the blame if we don't repeat. I'm digging the quotes and all, but dude better be able to back up all this talk.

Jayden24,

"Oh, and LO as starting PG wouldn't work in a million years. But if it does, I'll be the first one to say LakerTom said so. "

Why this idea is being treated as novel, idk. PJ already tried Lamar at point and it didn't workout. Lamar imho is our 2nd best post player (do disrespect to bynum or even kobe) and he's at his best when finishing around the rim. Having him run the point is taking him away from his strentghs in order to showcase a weaker skillset. Lets save his pg skills for the not so rare moments when he grabs a rebound and leads the break.

LakerTom,
"Why is it that some guys never learn to keep their mouths shut? You would think they could put one and one together and realize that the fact they’re always mouthing off and have never won might be related."

Don't sleep on Melo/Billups combo, they proved last year that they're legitimate contenders. Of course we'll put 'em to bed again if our paths cross in the playoffs, but I'd wager they'll give laker fans a couple of sleepless nights.

LakerTom,
"I think guys know that we were right there and everybody in that locker room and in the organization feels we were a better team than the Lakers. Everybody feels we were a better team than the Lakers and no one can tell me anything different. No one."

I take back what I said about K-Mart. Thought he made some generic remark about how they're the best team in ball. You know similar to what a celtic/spur team might say. But he had the audacity to specificaly mention the Lakers? Stupid sums it up best, but hey we'll take on all challengers regardless.

And WHY is Lamar turning flash and marrying KK?

Because he's been HOODALIZED by his old buddy Ron-Ron.

Beware: The moral self-destruction of the team has begun.

Artest has already begun the ego-rants "I'm Pippin to Kobe's MJ" "If the Lakers lose this year its my fault" etc

Kobe Pau And the crew have always been focused only on TEAM and winning. Artest looks more and more like the start of a cancerous ego trip that is the ONLY thing (given our talent level) that could bring down the Lakers.

Phil - or somebody - get a handle on it! Soon!

LakerDick,

A true testament to your namesake. Attacking LakerTom is an exercise in futility for someone as mentally challenged as yourself. Or, as the great Sheriff Taliq might say, "Don't bring Kool-aid to a block party, son."

Ta ta. After Bynum posts his first 25/12 game of the season, you might reconsider your foolishness.

LO is getting married? I thought he was married last year before his infant son died. Was it just a GF in Queens, NY? Who was that woman? How many children does LO has, besides his deceased son? Heard he just met Khloe for 6 weeks and decided to opt for lifetime partnership. I hope they realize that this is not a career contract where there is a termination clause. Indulging to marriage with short acquaintances is not like choosing clothes to wear in the closet and dump it later in the garage when it's out of fashion. This is not a marriage of a Laker player and a TV Reality actress for whims but a partnership for life. I wish them both happiness and success in their whirlwind romances and relationship and hopefully they'll be faithful to their commitment. It is not only the fans are involved here but God is their witness too. LO, Khloe, your decisions were hasty, there may be difficult challenges ahead especially in sticking with one partner in career paths. Marriage was your choice so make it work for a lifetime.
LakerTom, how do you expect LO to be a good PG when he'll be busy multi-tasking? I thought you were going for Kobe? Can Bynum, the future All Star, HOF Center play also as a PG? He will be the first seven footer play that position. lol!

Jay Jay,

"And the crew have always been focused only on TEAM and winning. Artest looks more and more like the start of a cancerous ego trip that is the ONLY thing (given our talent level) that could bring down the Lakers."

I completely disagree. Thriller is taking on a personal responsibility and accountability rarely seen by a professional athlete--at least not publicly. The guy is clearly excited to be a Laker and is personally commiting to a Championship, thus we can fully expect that at least one player will not be lulled into complacency this season.

I was among the loudest voices screaming from the rooftops, "Don't sign Artest! He's a cancer!" However, since he's joined the Purple and Gold, he's said all the right things and I find his enthusiasm to be contagious.

Give the guy a shot at redemption. He's a Laker now.

She'll fit in just fine; I just hope that she continues to respect Lamar and respect how important he is to the Lakers, instead of being concerned first about petty dramas in her life.

I've never dated an actress or model who wasn't a complete drama queen (and I've dated my fair share). Khloe Kardashian has ALL the warning signs of a self-absorbed, borderline, drama queen.

I hope for Lamar and the Lakers sake that I'm wrong in that assessment.

Hey everybody,

Nice to see all the old names on here. I've been on a little sabbatical and can't wait for the season to start but I had to drop by and ask...

WTF is wrong with Lamar? Is this really real? Is he high or something? I keep giving him the benefit of the doubt and hopefully this is some dumb publicity scheme but you've really gotta question this fool signing a $33mil contract and turning around and marrying some idiot who's only known because she's the ugly sister of the girl with the big ass.

Come one man...this is not the time to do this. I hope he doesn't get sidetracked by this stupidity and start slacking cuz I'm gonna have a fit if he does.

Umm... did I just read it right that Lamar is getting married to a REALITY TV STAR after only 12 DAYS of dating?

Jon K- I don't know, man. Are you sure your girlfriend counts as an actor? She just had that one commercial, and she completely flubbed her line 'I've fallen, and I can't um be not fallen anymore!'

First trial version. Had to give Artest the absolute best song I could find.

‘Laker named Thrill-Air’

To the theme song from ‘the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVbQo3IOC_A

Now this is a story I’m telling you all
I’m not just a guy who got into a brawl
Laker fans just chill out
And sit right there
I’ll tell you how I became a Laker named the “Thrill-Air

I’m from Queens New York born and raised
On the playground is where I spent most of my days
Chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin all cool
Shootin some B ball til it was time for school
Became mostly known
for my defensive skills
At least until I played in that place; Auburn Hills
I came out of St Johns, feeling kind of rare
The Bulls said ‘Make these guys forget all about that guy Air’

I did my best in the city that’s windy
But they packed me up and shipped me out to Indy
We did all right there, those guys were alright
We were on our best behavior ‘til we got to Detroit.

That mess, that was bad
But I was sitting it out,
lying on my ass
‘Til some guy had to go and hit me with a glass
Well, that was gonna cause a fight

The NBA got kind of pissy, they whined about that
I got my suspension, seventy games I sat
I thought what the hell?
This really ain’t fair
I caused more suffering when my album hit the air

Well the Pacers they decided that I’d have to go
They shipped me off to Sacramento
I played real hard for Adelman
Must’ve had some success
Traded for me when he got to Texas

Playin’ for the Rockets was doing alright
But me and Kobe, we’ve always been tight
Rockets jersey wouldn’t be the last that I’d wear
Couldn’t wait to tell Kobe- man was in the shower

A season or so later
Heard Mitch to Trevor ‘Yo homes smell ya later’
Sign for the minimum
Do it with flair
Now I’m the Laker with the nickname Thrill-Air

LakerDick, quit being a prick. Its annoying. So the guy is optimistic about Andrew, and likes LO as point. What's your point in chasing him down for an answer?

Disagreeing is one thing, but those 'in-the-know' know that you're just being a troll.

Kenyon Martin? You mean the guy that said the same sort of thing after the Lakers beat him and Kidd when he was in New Jersey?

Nooooo.....he has no reason to hold a grudge and is a fine, stable basketball player.

[/sarcasm]

ROFLs at the Nuggets trying to be Celtics West.

LakerTom, in regards to Drew, I've noticed that his teammates haven't integrated him as well as they did in the run up to both of his injuries.

We've discussed this before; I believe that Drew, at this point, has been largely dependent upon his teammates. He's been an outlet and garbage man around basket. But once he was taken away and brought back, the team had to relearn how to play with him in this regard (the playoffs are a helluva time to do it).

IMO, the playoffs indicated to me that he didn't have the footwork or reactions that he did when we were approaching midseason last year. Nor did he have the touch 5 feet and in. hence, he couldn't perform when he had to get a shot on his own, nor did he get those put backs he used to get often.

Hopefully, the teammates and he integrate again. Drew isn't as effective as a 'dump it in and forget it' player, as of the playoffs anyhow. It'll be imperative that they get on the same page, because for him to great, it has to be in teh context of his teammate and the triangle. He needs to be their outlet, and he needs to be able to clean up their misses too.

"I keep giving him the benefit of the doubt and hopefully this is some dumb publicity scheme but you've really gotta question this fool signing a $33mil contract and turning around and marrying some idiot who's only known because she's the ugly sister of the girl with the big ass."

Dang.

Please, East Coast Jessie, Don't Hurt Em!

At least now, when LO slips into his proverbial 2-3 game slides with the 7 pts/5 rebound averages, we have someone else to blame it on.

And for the record, having a big ass is not a crime! Mrs. Banner Holder has one (although, with this recession, it's lost a huge bit of its badonkability). And I seem to recall several of our fair Lakers Blog ladies claiming to have the goods during a gameday chat last year. I'M STILL WAITING ON MY PICTURES!!!

:o)

LAKERDICK,

Here is a direct quote from the first paragraph of my Lamar Odom as Point Guard post: “Now I am not actually proposing that the Lakers actually consider Odom as their next starting point guard. In truth, his play and role backing up Pau at power forward is too valuable. But I would love to see it.” If you check the history of this blog, you will see that I have always recognized that Lamar Odom’s most important role as the backup power forward allowed us to keep 2 of our 3 bigs on the floor at all times.

What you fail to take into account is that Andrew Bynum’s games and minutes played are going to increase dramatically this year, which means that Lamar Odom will have to also spend some time backing up Ron Artest at small forward and possibly Derek Fisher at point guard if he is to continue to play 30 minutes per game and contribute enough to justify his salary. Of course, you think Bynum is going to be a bust so that misjudgment continues to lead you to making incorrect predictions.

>>> 2.) A full-court press would give the Lakers fits.

When is the last time you saw an NBA team run a full-court press? Nobody does it because professional teams can beat it too easily.

>>> 3.) Lamar's shooting is not accurate enough to merit the position.

Lamar looked pretty good shooting from long range in the playoffs. He is not as good a shooter as Fish but probably better than Fish’s current backups – Jordan Farmar and Shannon Brown.

You really don’t understand Tex’s offense, do you. I not only played that system in high school but also bought his book and used the Triple Post Offense for several years coaching in CYO leagues. One of the key advantages of the Triangle is that it allows you to easily isolate any player on the team in a post up. That is why you see Kobe so often take smaller guards in the post. That is where Lamar would do most of his damage as opposing guards would be helpless to stop him in the paint.

Anyway, I won’t waste any more time responding to your ludicrous attempts to get under my skin. As Obama said, any fool can get 15 minutes of fame by being rude. My advice to you is to make sure to shake off what is bothering you about my posts and stop embarrassing and stop embarrassing yourself.

#4,

Thanks for your support. I think LakerDick used another name before and is the same troll that was killed earlier. Damn things are like cats with multiple lives. Definitely not a former point guard. Maybe a cheerleader. LOL.

LOL. How’s it going, Edwin, my friend? No point guard minutes for Drew but if Pau keeps shooting over 40% from 3-point land and dribbling between his legs on fast breaks, I just may decide to break out my Pau Gasol for Point Guard arguments. That should shrivel up LakerDick faster than a Lamar Odom-Khloe Kardasian marriage. If you know what I mean. LOL!

Outlaw,

Thanks for the support. Unfortunately, LakerDick will have folded and disappeared by the time Drew starts dropping 25 points and 12 boards per game.

Lamar Odom....First let me begin by saying she is hot..If she behaves, she could be a good balance he needs in his life to stop him from being so up and down..
almost like a level ground...OR...She could be a peanut...Lets hope not..

Let the point guard battle begin...the bench has the potential to be a little unstable with Morrison,Sasha,Farmar,Brown and the new French Spider..I like him..Amo ,The french spider and Sasha are not point guards...I do know that...

Can you believe that i shot the same field goal percentage as Sasha in the finals from my computer?....0%....Thats right...0%....

No one gave me $15 mill for 3 years...

Congrats to Pau, also read an interesting article on ESPN on whether he is worthy to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, for me, it's a no-brainer. By the time he retires, he would probably have a few rings and piled up his stats, but then again, the HOF is like the Grammys, nice honor, no respect.

Jay Jay, "WHY is Lamar turning flash and marrying KK? Because he's been HOODALIZED by his old buddy Ron-Ron." That's hilarious, and probably true. Don't worry though, Phil is good with this kind of stuff, c'mon, have you seen him in one of those iphone commercials?

Speaking of hoodalized, I came across this blog (http://rayradray.wordpress.com/2009/09/22/ron-ron-did-it/) about Ron Ron and paranoia in sports. It's pretty funny.

Champs Again!

LO.... how do you rush into a decision that could affect you for a lifetime, but drag your feet at a 4-yr laker contract offer??.... maybe you need to call your agent to try to get you a better deal.... there's a reason why those kardashians are always getting dumped.... that must be some GOOD CANDY!!

With regard to Odom and the need to find him minutes in addition to his usual role as backup PF. Between C and PF, there are 96 minutes to be shared. So in a close game where PJ elects not to use Powell or Mbenga that still leaves 32 minutes each to be shared between Pau, LO and Bynum. That's enough minutes to keep everyone happy. Besides SF is going to be crowded w/Artest, Luke and Morrison plus Kobe and Sasha also getting some minutes in that position. PG is already a 3 headed monster w/Fish, Farmar and Brown. SG is actually our shallowest position because after Kobe, you have the inconsistent Sasha. Brown might get some SG minutes when sharing the backcourt with Fish or Jordan.
The current lineup is set but in terms of individual player improvement, the one player that needs to improve the most from last season is Sasha.

The Outlaw,

Per your comments, attacking LakerTom is futile, but you can call LakerDick as "mentally challenged"??

LakerTom,

Let Bynum accomplish something, and then lets shower the prize. As of today, he is only the #3 option in the team (next to Kobe and Pau) He has to come up and show that he's got what it takes to become the #2 and #1 option.

Till then, don't put his name in any of the All-time Laker Greats lists.

Jon K. observation of the day...

Is there a better second string power forward in the NBA than Lamar Odom?

Is there a better second string center in the NBA than Andrew Bynum?

I believe the answer to both questions is a solid "NO!"

Ergo and henceforth, whenever The Bench Mob is put out there against other teams bench slobs the presence of Andrew Bynum or Lamar Odom will create mismatches which the opposition will be powerless to start.

As such, I expect the +/- stats of our Bench Mob to significantly improve this year.

HOWEVER! I also expect that Ron "Thriller" Artest's hyper-competitiveness (especially after he has stated that the next ring is on his back) will get him kicked out of a lot of games this year. As such Luke Walton and Adam Morrison better be fricken ready to play because we're going to need them during pivotal contests this year while Thriller is chilling out in the locker room.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!!

Kobefan in Cupertino,

Let's let Laker Tom be Laker Tom.

He's an optimist.

Personally, I'd rather share the enthusiasm of an optimist than have to battle trolls and chicken littles all day long.

With due respect, if you want to know where I stand, read my posts. Don’t read the interpretations by Bynum doubters and haters. The ONLY time I ever created a Lakers Great List with Andrew Bynum on it was in the middle of summer and was based on how the Top Ten Laker Players would change substantially if the Lakers were to win the next five championships – giving them a total of 20.

That would mean that Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol, and Lamar Odom would have 6 rings, which would likely move all three of them into the Top Ten Greatest Lakers players, especially when you discount Lakers greats like Wilt who won only 1 ring or Shaq only 3 rings. That single post is the only time I have included Drew in a Top Lakers List.

As I have said many times, I believe Drew will prove to be the Next Great Lakers Center and our next franchise player. Has he proved that yet. Not even close. He needs to stay healthy and give us five straight seasons of play like he did both Januarys before injuries sidelined him. Furthermore, I am by far not the only Laker fan (not counting Lakers players like Kobe or general managers and coaches like Mitch and Phil) who believes Andrew will become a great center.

Drew’s situation is not like Greg Odon, who has never shown signs of greatness so far. The last two years before his injury, Drew was playing just great basketball, even becoming the first Lakers player other than Kobe to win NBA Player of the Week honors for the Western Conference. All I predicting is that he will return to the form he displayed before getting injured. So tell me why is that crazy?

Tom

The triangle offense allows for non traditional players, versatile players can thrive...He will have plenty of help, almost like Devean George and the Hall of Fame Four...you said tutoring from Fisher and Shaw, that would be great. I just looked at the roster, and I quickly assessed sure thing players vs expendables...that is why I was so upset about the no look at Sun Yue (29 minutes, he should ask the Knicks for that jersey number), yes they would have had to pay penalty on his MINIMUM, but I still think he could have turned into a special player with his versatile skills, he just needed time to work out, speed up and perhaps get in a REAL game, with the real team. He wasn't given a fair shot. The Clippers picked up Kareem Rush, wow, and the Rockets picked up Wil Conroy, double, I don't see what anybody sees in him.
Down the line guys are talking about Odom will have trouble bringing the ball up the court, well, he's not 6'0" like a typical point guard, and if he's doubled, he can just keep the ball high, pass to Kobe or Thriller,( or Luke), then we have a 4 on 3 and you can choose who dunks Pau or Andrew. PG is not new for Lamar people, it's what he's been since Clipper days...he only became a 4 because of Miami, and he's lost the bulk he had from those days. LO gives us 4 players. Kobe plays 3 positions, Fish 2, Brown probably 3, Thriller 3, Pau 3 (if he goes soft, let him be a 3), Andrew 2, Sasha 3, Farmar 1,.....they shold just announce LO as the guard and Kobe as the forward, that alone will make the opposition think, and some of the teams don't do that so well.
Pau is a legit MVP candidate....Kobe may have some votes drained going toward Pau, so LeBronze will probably repeat, but just hand him the trophy, cuz you won't get a handshake.

To: Segeboy Formerly Known As Taliq and Jamie Sweet

Jamie Sweet you were rigth both times, indeed last Sunday Pau won the Eurobasket 2009 MVP, but he also is the reigning World Championships MVP, he won it on 2006 in Japan.
