Potholes on the road to a repeat: Regarding complacency

RiddlerTV

Let's be honest- The Lakers aren't exactly covered in question marks like something out of Frank Gorshin's closet. That doesn't mean there isn't anything to talk about. (Thankfully, because otherwise we'd be out of a job.) Winning a title is hard. Winning consecutive Larry O's is like trying to find an occasion to wear something from Frank Gorshin's closet on any of the 364 days of the year that aren't Halloween. Pretty brutal. So as the regular season approaches, we'll take a look at some of the bigger issues that loom over the journey ahead.

Starting... now:

The Concern: Complacency settles in once teams win a title.

No question, there is a difference between chasing a title and defending one. Technically speaking, like successive rolls of the dice, the run to last year's title and the chase for this one are independent events. Each season is its own unique universe, like a scene inside a hardwood snow globe. In real world terms, that's not always how things work. It's human nature to allow the past to impact the present, and last year's championship is unavoidably part of the context surrounding this season. It's easy to relax, to lose some of the focus required to re-reach the mountaintop, or worse, as Derek Fisher notes in our conversation with him last week, to assume you've got the whole thing figured out.

Even if complacency isn't the issue, most of us recognize that "What now?" feeling after accomplishing a long sought goal. It's easy to lose a little direction. It's hard to recharge and do the work required after getting to the top. Fortunately, sports aren't the real world (in more ways than one). Every season provides its own concrete, easily defined target- a championship, and the history/jewelry that comes with it.

More importantly, the Lakers feature Kobe Bryant, at worst tied year in and year out for the league's MCP (Most Competitive Player) award, highly skilled at kicking slackers in the ass. Fisher is a monument to discipline and leadership. Phil Jackson specializes in multi-title runs. Ron Artest wants a ring like a Tigger Pooh wants honey.** Strong management guarantees those who put themselves ahead of the team won't be on the team very long. And so on. These are highly motivated individuals who understand how their legacies as individuals are enhanced by the achievements of their team.*

In short, call me naive if you will, but I don't think complacency a problem. Discuss.

Worry Level: Low

BK

*I consider concerns about PT, rotations, and guys "wanting theirs" to be something separate from the idea of complacency, but definitely an idea we'll touch on en route to opening night.

**Regarding the Tigger/Pooh flub, I was thinking of that story of how Tigger kept insisting how much Tigger's love honey, among other things, but of course then it turns out he hates the stuff. Totally forgot that part. Pooh was indeed the proper reference. My apologies to A.A. Milne.

Teams like the Cavs this past year were able to get by on the fact that teams count them out. Sure they won a a lot amount of games but they were still the Cleveland Cavaliers. Lebron is great but you know that their defense is poor (I don't know how they got the reputation as great defenders. Name me a single person on that team who was a top tier defender) and they have no inside option. No well coached team really fears a team like that. They beat up on east coast teams, and padded their record. Nobody ever counts the Lakers out. The intensity and ability that Kobe and Jackson bring to every game always makes them a player. At least before the game starts. If Phils history is any indication of how he manages a team for the postseason; the Lakers may not have the best record but they will be the leanest, meanest team come may.

I don't think complacency will be the problem, I think ego's and freelancing from the offense will be the demon. We've been to the finals the last 2 years, PJ and the players know what it take to get there. With the addition of THRILLER, the western conference know the "Lake Show" is the greatest show in the association, and the team to beat, hands down.

You make good points BK. But then again, last year, the Lakers were masters in complacency. The 7 game Houston series. Losses to mediocre teams. Letting teams back in the game. Etc. So its obviously a concern or else it would not be worth a discussion topic. The thing is PJ treats the regular season essentially as a long winded training camp which I think is the right approach as PJ's record speaks for itself, despite making fans crazy. This Laker team has had a tendency to think it can turn itself on or off on its own choosing. That's worked so far because the talent level of this team and the system they play is a level higher than the rest of the league. And they are led on the floor by the incomparable Bean Bryant and his sidekick: only the best non-American player in the world - Pau Gasol. Also the Lakers have chosen to always turn it on versus teams like Boston, Cleveland, S.A., Denver and Orlando.
However, I think we can rely on the Lakers to continue their tradition this year of making as many fans lunatic as possible by losing games to teams like Minnesota.

Taliq....I will be calling him ...CRABIEL ONIEL

Lakers Sign Four to Training Camp Roster
September 28, 2009

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed forwards Tony Gaffney, David Monds, Mickael Gelebale and Michael Fey it was announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not released.

Gaffney, an undrafted forward out of Massachusetts, finished his senior year at UMASS averaging a double-double with 11.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. The 6-8 forward was ranked 3rd in the nation in blocked shots (3.8) and was named the 2009 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year. Most recently Gaffney was a member of the 2009 Lakers summer league team where he averaged 3.8 points and 2.8 rebounds in four games played.

Monds, a 6-9 forward out of Oklahoma State, was a member of the Lakers 2009 summer league squad where he scored 14.0 points and pulled down 5.2 rebounds in five games. The Georgia native spent last season playing in the NBA Development League as a member of the Albuquerque Thunderbirds where he averaged 13.4 points and 9.6 rebounds before finishing out the season with the Dakota Wizards.

Gelabale, a 6-7 forward from France, finished the 2008-09 season as a member of the Los Angeles D-Fenders where he averaged 16.0 points and 4.3 rebounds in six games played. Prior to his stint in the NBA D-League, Gelabale spent two seasons (2006-08) with the Seattle SuperSonics where he averaged 4.5 points and 2.1 rebounds in 15.6 minutes.

Fey, a 7-0 forward/center out of UCLA, played all four seasons at UCLA where he averaged 5.2 points and 2.7 rebounds while shooting 54.6% from the field. The former Bruin spent the 2008-09 season playing for Al Shabab (United Arab Emirates).

The Lakers training camp roster now stands at 17 players.

BK:

I agree with you - the worry level re. "complacency" is LOW. My concern for this season is: how well will Andrew Bynum play.

Kobe Bryant chasing ring number 5 to be one away from Jordan's total = NO COMPLACENCY.

No disrespect to all the other teams, but I think the Lakers still want to thrash Boston and Cleveland in the Finals to set the record straight once and for all. No time for complacency until all of the elite teams in the East are sent into the gutter like bowling pins.

To do so requires besting worthy and improved competitors in the West this season and in seasons to come.

Complacency? I think not. The Lakers have an owner who EXPECTS Championships and fans who think the season is for nought without a parade. There's way too much pride in this organization for complacency. Sure, sometimes the players try to pace themselves instead of reaching for the jugular. But that's not complacency. That's just the grind. It IS a long season. But it will be considered a wasted season without bringing home the trophy.
These players want to be remembered as a Dynasty. I think they have a pretty good shot at it. Go Lakers!

LakerMike

Welcome aboard, Mike. You will appreciate these memories even more as you get older. For most of us LATLB regulars, this place has become an integral part of our real and virtual lives. For real Lakers fans, home is the house that AK & BK built, where we can wear our hearts proudest.

While nobody could ever replace Chick Hearn and the ability he had to make every Lakers season and game a special happening, AK and BJ will, in my opinion. garner similar respect and admiration someday as an evolutionary media force that transformed being a Lakers fan into something very special, different, enjoyable, and unforgettable. By the time they hang up their keyboards, the KamBros will deserve to revered with the same love and appreciation that we hold for Chick.

This is a special place and a special time to be so lucky as to be a Lakers fan.

Tigger doesn't want honey.....Pooh does. But I sure hope they win another title!

Is anybody on this here blog interested on doing an (unofficial) Lakers Blog fantasy league? I’m signing up for my usual number on Yahoo and I can create one for y’all to join if anybody is interested. Probably would need like seven or so to make it worth the while. And yes, L-T, I’m already penciling you in for a team. I’ll try to send you the league info via K Bros email, if that’s the right way to do it?

K Bros, what would be the recommended way of inviting people to a fantasy league without including the riff raff?

Posted by: phred | September 28, 2009 at 03:44 PM

Um, I actually had to go and Wiki pedia this, cause my books have been packed and moved, but Tigger doesn't like honey. Pooh likes honey. The literature goes out of its way to point out that Tigger likes extract of malt, which was what Roo fed to Kanga, or perhaps Kanga fed to Roo. There is a limit to how much geek I am willing to be for any particular cultural reference. Y'all look it up yourselfs, it looks like you need to practice your researching skills. : )

As to the actual point of the post, well, I don't really believe that nba teams have much of a problem with abstract emotional factors like complacency and motivation. I can't think of a season where, barring injury, the team with the best players didn't win. Sure, there will be a few Dallas mavs style chokes, but if we stay healthy and nobody goes nuts, we have to be the favorites. Just my prediction.

JustaLakerfan,

Those posts about Laker training regiments and other training camps were WAY too long. Just post the link and let people click on them. Or, at the very least, include a small excerpt and the link. But cutting and pasting an ENTIRE article, especially one of such length, isn't practical, so we likely won't post it.

Thanks

AK

I could throw in a few WE WONS! and the occasionall IT IS ALL ABOUT THE LOVE to try and dump some cold water on the giant (*&%^*( @$#@ that Blitz, Tom and HM are having with each other, despite not actually disagreeing about anything, but if they really need to be reminded at this point, I don't think there is much I can do to help.

"I can't go to bed. Somebody on the internet is WRONG!"

well, i love that quote anyway.

I might get some heat for this but I think this current squad is less complacent than some of the rosters earlier in the decade. The three-peat teams could totally dominate but there was also a tendency to coast, to feel that they could turn it on when they really needed to. Kobe was always driven but he's become a lot more focused with time. Pau has brought a lot to this team, the return of Fish has also contributed to a visable work ethic. I'm not saying that the team always has the after-burners on but the loss to the Celtics helped crystallize things for them.

Pooh like honey. Tigger likes to bounce around on his tail.

It's like saying Marge Simpson like donuts.

You're better tha that K brothers. Or maybe you're trying to make a point that i have completely missed.

Cheers

BK,

>>> Worry Level: Low

Smart call, Brian. Rick Friedman hit the nail on the head, too. This team and its individual players still have a chip on the shoulder and something to prove. As a team, we want to show we are better than Boston and Cleveland. Until we beat them both, we’ll still carry that chip. As players, Kobe will be on a Drive for Five to tie Magic and threaten MJ for most rings. Derek will be Derek, the ultimate pro. Thriller will be like a hungry beast. Bynum wants to show he can stay healthy and play break out ball for the entire year. Farmar and Brown will be in contract years. Ammo just wants a shot.

I worry most about Pau because of his heavy minutes the past two years and Lamar because he is, well, Lamar. Pau has a tendency to disappear and become too passive when everybody else is doing fine. That is OK for Kobe to do since he can turn it on at will but Pau needs to stay in rhythm. It will be interesting to see if Phil really stands by his comments to give Pau fewer minutes, especially early in the year. Much will depend upon how well Drew plays. If he starts strong, then Phil may be able to give Pau a lighter load until the stretch run. I am almost more worried re Pau’s health than Drew.

I am also praying that the ring, new contract, and marriage will provide Lamar with the serenity and confidence to finally put all of his wonderful talent together and have a sensational season, winning the Sixth Man of the Year award. Keeping Lamar motivated as well as on the floor is obviously one of the big reasons why I want to see him backing up Ron at the 3 and Fish at the 1 in addition to Pau at the 4. We need to keep Lamar engaged at all times and put him in positions to help the team. I think we may see a much more mature and consistent Lamar on the floor. He knows it’s time to grow up.

But like the last two years, there are a waves of clouds out there that could wreak havoc on our season or that could coalesce into another perfect storm of good fortune: Nobody gets hurt. Kobe wins MVP. Drew breaks out. Pau gets even better. Ron shines on and off the floor. Fish proves to be ageless. Farmar and Brown give us 2 options to succeed Derek. And Lamar Odom finally fulfills the gigantic potential he has dragged around since leaving Rhode Island and the Lakers win over 70 and repeat.

Tom

LOL. Whole lotta aggrieved Tigger fans out there. Man, BK you stepped in it.

phred,

>>> LakerTom- Too much time to yourself these days? Gotta stop with those references, or you’ll
>>> go blind. Unless of course you were going to apply as a scab ref. Then that might help, I suppose.

LOL. At my age, phred. You start to consider that going blind might not be the “worst” alternative. And actually, I refereed for over 10 years in various rec leagues and got high ratings and was very well liked by the players. Basically, I called games the way that I liked to see them called when I played, meaning that the team I favored got every call and was a sure bet to win. LOL. Just kidding. Anyway, I let the games flow and wouldn’t call fouls that did not impact the play, especially and 1’s. After all, how much did that foul affect the shot since it went in? Just stop crying and play on. The key is just being consistent on what you call unless you need to rein in unnecessary roughness. It’s so simple.

>>> And yes, L-T, I’m already penciling you in for a team.

Sorry, phred. What with actual Lakers games to watch and tape and blog about, I definitely won’t have any time to study players on other teams and mentally master.. oops, I mean, play mental games. After all, there is only so much time I can steal from work and Mrs. LakerTom. It has to be worth it to me and personally, fantasy sports isn’t. Probably a generational thing. But thank you anyway.

Tom

JustaLakerFan,

I love underdog players. I'd like to know more about our training camp invitees and hope that one of them proves to be special.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

GO LAKERS!!!!

Good Evening Charles...Good Evening Everyone....

well it's almost here and not a minute too soon....

I hope that somehow we can keep both Gelebale and Gaffney----real easy for me to spend Dr. Buss's wampum, but both those guys seems like good bench depth and insurance and players that might be needed to surround Bynum when the second half (or final third) of this dynasty is in full bloom or so...

of course by then maybe Durant will be wearing Purple and Gold (hey all of us can have our little dreams, as it were)...

AS ALWAYS, AS EVER, YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY (AND CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON) TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!

GO LAKERS !!!

"Blitz,
Could you clarify what you were heading toward when mentioning Sun, Sasha & Farmar back to Jon. Me being the biggest fan of a player who never got a look."

Humanomaly,

The remark was about Jon stating I was too negative. We knew that he wasn't high on Sun Yue but was high on Bynum especially in this case he was saying I was too negative especially about Sasha and Jordan playing good consistent bball this upcoming season.

I've never been sold on Sasha overall because he has only played 4 months of consistent basketball all throughout his career as an LA Laker and that came in a contract year and Jordan after good first starts in all his 3 years in Los Angeles went tumbling down and hit walls in the later part of each season. I have called Sasha though "Choke-a-cic" primarily because I will never forgive his 1-9 shooting in Game 4 2008 Finals and how he let an old man Ray Allen BLEW threw him without the aid of a screen from Garnett and put the dagger layup and later was crying about it. I personally think his production last year is what his career numbers will mostly reflect himself in his NBA career.

So let me say it in a different way: If it was me talking about about Brian Cook Jon would have you said I was too negative?

It's not a crime to be realistic sometimes even if it does seem negative.

This is truly awesome.
PJ and KB leading us.
Pau #2
And we still have enough guys behind them to make the playoffs on their own.

Thanks AK BK and all the gang. It's going to be the best Laker season EVER!

Tomorrow it all starts

welcome back all bloggers
Baywood

I think on the whole we probably are in for another slightly frustrating regular season because its just how they roll... but I think having Phil,Kobe, and Fish makes a huge difference when it comes to this because unlike organisations when suddenly everyone is a champion these guys are experienced at dealing with it for starters but also means that any player that might start to think he's a bit special can be grounded pretty quickly...So you've got one ring ? big deal... type of thing.I think this is more likely to be a success breeds success type of senario than a one and done. But you gotta stay healthy and you saw even in the finals (which will be remembered as a fairly emphatic win) how only a few plays in the playoffs can change everything.

Only because it drives me nuts and I see it so often do I mention this, it is training regimen (no t) not regiment which is a military term. I am pleased that Phil said that Andrew looked lighter than at the end of the season. For a true big man with a large boned frame the real danger is Shakatosis which is gaining 5 pounds per year, every year over the course of your career until you have to push off someone else's back to dunk.

KB Blitz,

The danger of the cynical mind is that it ALWAYS describes itself as "realistic."

It's not. It's just negative. There's a big difference.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

So, can I'd like an annual feel good story among Lakers personel. Sure Thriller is a feel good story (sort of), but some guy who works his ass off from training camp would be a real good feel food story.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!!

I think complacency is not a big problem because of several things.

- Amazingly, there are still some doubters.
- The addition of Ron Artest will enliven this bunch and his quest for the ring will inspire.
- Andrew Bynum still has something to prove and this year could be his for the taking.
- Pau Gasol will want to establish even more firmly his elite player status
- Sasha, Jordan, Morrison - Careers at a crossroads. Excited to see what happens.
- Some lackadaisical play last year, even during the playoff run.
- Better competition. This team tends to play up to challenges.
- Kobe clock ticking. He knows it. He's ain't done too.
- Shannon Brown. Man, something tells me he's the Ariza of this year. He may get the majority of the PG minutes this year. Good D, high energy, exciting finishes, some spot up threes. He can do it.

Tom- your loss. But I don't want to hear any more bad mouting of fantasy sports from you, since you are so doggedly determined to avoid learning anything about it.

Of course, nobody else seems interested either. I guess maybe the blog is too Lakercentric, not necessarily basketball centric. Ah well, life is full of little disapointments.

BK- well, it made me laugh at least. Never let it be said that the K Bros aren't dedicated to getting their facts right after all.

and no, that wasn't meant to sound upset, sorry if anybody got that impression. Never know around here.

I agree the Lakers are a good bet to repeat .
What we don't need , if and when they when they do ,
is the wet blanket numbskull T.J. Simers around .
I don't think he has taken nearly enough abuse for
his jealous little person article last year .
How does this guy have a job .
Now that practically no one talks to him anymore
he has lost the tiny speck of relevance he may have once had .

JustaLakerfan,

==========
Will post link in future.

So again Jon if I was bashing Sun Yue, Brian Cook, Smush Parker in a similar manner to Jordan Farmar and Sasha Vujacic would that be considered negative? Those guys cannot player and even you would agree so I have to say they can play not to be negative? You were all negative about Sun and Cook.

That's the same manner how I feel about Sasha and degree Jordan Farmar. I simply don't think Sasha can play multiple years of consistent basketball and to a lesser degree Jordan Farmar. I just don't think they are consistent starters.

And Bynum? I've already posted about how I think he's still a potential franchise player (note potential please) and that he's a really good player. But it's not necessarily thinking negative if I think he's not the player Laker Tom and to a similar though not the same matter as you do Jon. I don't think he's the dominant big man center as previous big man centers were. Heck at this moment if I had to choose I would choose Vlade Divac during his LA days to be a better overall center than Bynum.

Not thinking in the way that Laker Tom thinks about Bynum isn't necessarily thinking negative. It just isn't.

Thanks Jon K,

I will post link for updates to status of players over summer and getting into training camp.

AK thinks my article was too long but I think not as long as some of the posts I have seen.

But I will respect the blog crew and follow their requests to cut comment down.

"Of course, nobody else seems interested either. I guess maybe the blog is too Lakercentric, not necessarily basketball centric."

Hence the name NBA4ever, I am a huge advocate for the game of basketball, particularly the NBA. I’m always arguing with people that the NFL is overrated; they give me the lame comeback of the ratings. Without getting into all of it right now, it’s just that I find the Association fans to be more into the league as a whole vs being Laker-centric or otherwise. NBA fans know the players, the teams, and the cap inside and out vs the fair-weather fans of the team-centric NFL fan base. You can’t make the argument for Andrew Bynum or any Laker player without the knowledge of the other players in the league. Therefore a little fantasy league makes you a more complete Lakers fan.
I love the NBA; count me in to play if you start a fantasy league.

Mike Campagna -
T.J. Simers is a 350lb TROLL in serious need of Prozac (he's depressed) and Zyprexa (he's psychotic). He likes to harass people and make their lives miserable...and for that the Times pay him! Blame the Times for not firing him years ago. I miss Alan Malamud, the late columnist (RIP Alan) that Simers replaced on "Page Two" in space only, never in class and character...

hubbit

Any way we can get Javaris Crittenton back? I think he will have a break out year. I still miss him.

Hey phred, I'm interested in joining your fantasy league if you run one. Just let me know when the draft is.

Anyone else up for a Lakersblog "Winnie the Pooh" fantasy league?

So how soon will it be before T.J. Simers begins complaining that the Lakers suck?

Complacent + Kobe = Oxymoron

As one who worries as much as Chick did, complacency is not on my list when it comes to this Lakers team (see Phil, Kobe, Artest)

Distractions? Now your talking.

Lamar on the reality TV scene with one of the K sisters? Not good. But with Lamar that probably means he will be the on again - off again Lamar we all know. I can live with that.

Ron Artest gets my "OMG! Its the end of the world, Chick Hearns, preseason Worry Award"

And why? Although Ron is from a Big City, he never really played in a Big City. The media, temptations, the spot light are huge in LA,

"Where the stars come to play and the Larry 'O hopes to stay!"

My hope is, that Ron Ron will be focused like a Pit Bull, okay not a good illustration with PETA lurking. How about focused like a starved lion ready to pounce on its prey.

If Ron can survive today's Media day test, with the K's hard hitting questions, then it will be a good sign for how he will do for the rest of the year.

Signed, "What, me worry?!" Alfred E. Newman Fatty

Good morning CRUE!!!

Why is the reason that Luke and Sasha are in every picture in that article????
What are they triying to tell us or make us think???
Well, at least they are training

Justa,

I actually appreciated your posting the entire article about the new Lakers in camp rather than just the link. I disagree that it was too long. I don’t like there to be links when the article is short and to the point. And you are right that it was shorter than many other posts, including mine. :)

Regarding complacency. Careful inspection of the schedule reveals the following from opening night (Oct 27) to Dec 11.
--17 of first 21 are HOME GAMES
--only 11 of first 21 games are against playoff teams from '09 (including two with Houston)
--only THREE sets of back-to-backs in those first 21 games

Even if RonRon needs time to adjust to new team...
Even if LO needs time to adjust to new family life...
Even if Drew & Pau need time to adjust to each other...
Even if Sasha & Jordan need time to admit they need each other...
Even if Kobe defers early to reserve resources for May & June...
Even if PJ fails to call a timeout even once...
Even if, gulp, the injury bug bites...

Can anyone argue that expectations for a FAST START between opening night and 12/11 should be defined as a won-loss record near 17-4? IF they fall short of this target, complacency becomes the subject that will account for this "failure".

By the way, during same period of time (opening night to Dec 11)...
CLEVELAND - 11 Home / 12 Away
BOSTON - 11 Home / 11 Away
SAN ANTONIO - 14 Home / 6 Away
PORTLAND - 12 Home / 12 Away
Best record to secure home court throughout the playoffs will require a quick start.

lol ... guess it means you're for the lecrab nickname as well ... personally i'm not for it since lbj and d mamba are buddies

Jon K,

I dont see LBJ going to jersey. I think if he leaves the cavs he goes to the knicks. It'd be the same as say a russian billonaire buying the clippers, does that all of a sudden make it the preferable destination over the lakers? idk.

With a Winnie the Pooh fantasy league you'd end up with a bunch of good character guys but they'd undoubtedly be a bit soft and suffer from low basketball IQ...Piglet would be an undersized point guard and while I could see Tiger's athleticism and quickness being tantalising he may be a bust kwame Brown style...I'm not sure a player with 'pooh' on the back of his jersey is such a good omen either...

Aladdin might be a better bet, he's got smarts, is unselfish and is great in the clutch. He's also he's got a genie, magic carpet and a cool mascot on his side.Thats one hell of an entourage.

COMPLACENCY = LAMAR ODOM

It written all over. Artest and Shannon Brown will bring the energy every night.

Monday Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant was in Houston for a two-hour workout with Olajuwon. Olajuwon said Bryant reached out to him for help with his moves in the post. "He gave me the biggest compliment," Olajuwon said. "(He said) You are the best (at the) mid-post and post move. "He wanted me to show my moves to him." Olajuwon said his style of play in the paint is really suited for a guy like Bryant. "In my mind most of my moves for a guy (with) that agility can use it better than the big guy," Olajuwon said. "Because my moves are not really for the big guy. "It's for the guards and small forwards. So he would benefit most on the post because of his agility. "It was so much fun because how he picks it up. I worked with him for two hours, step by Step."Olajuwon expects Bryant to be even better than he was last season when he led the Lakers to the NBA Championship.
"Adding those moves to his game, watch out for him this year," Olajuwon said. "I understand his dedication. His desire to win and stay on top. "That's what I respect most about him." By the way, Olajuwon said he would never have held one-on-one sessions like this if he was still playing.
"You don't want to give them your secrets," Olajuwon said.

Phred,

lemme join your fantasy league. is it on yahoo?

Lakers should learn from the lessons of '04 Season when the Mailman and da Glove joined Shaq & Kobe. They thought they were impregnable and a sure winner with the best point guard and best power forward coming to LA as mercenaries to pan golden rings. Well they met their demise to a lowly Pistons. Why? It's ll about egos and complacency. The Big Ego cannot play in the same floor with the Small Ego. Like in this blog, we have not won a single game for this season and yet we read the fans reaction post after post running wild acting like kids approaching a Toys R'Us store in predicting dynasty. NBA is not a video game that can be turned-on and turned-off, it is about human endurance and emotional involvement to undergo hard work and perseverance to attain a goal. The rules are still the same with a round ball and five players in each team. When players and fans think that their team is so superior and conquer all, then those are the hints or possible pitfalls of our downfall. There is no dynasty in history that never met its downfall whether it was Alexander the great, Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler, they all did not remain on top because pride breeds complacency and complacency creates rustiness, lackadaisical attitudes, procrastinations and then it goes to blaming a game of tribal factionalism that eventually dissipates the strength of the team. What is the prescription to avoid those pitfalls? Well, hard work and humility is one. Goal setting and taking one game at a time is second. Thirdly, perseverance to reach perfection. Winning games should always be ahead of celebrations.

70 wins?? You guys are crazy. Not only would it show how truly weak the West is, it would tire them out for the playoffs, so, I hope you DO go for 70 wins - that would be the greatest thing!!!

When u have a leader like kobe chasing MJs legacy (kinda like tiger chasing nicklaus) and now a mean hungry artest to the mix COMPLACENCY WILL NOT BE AN ISSUE.

Phils main issue will be to experiment with the rotations that work and find minutes for everybody. to nurture our future and younger pieces while keeping our vets fresh. Oh and make sure luke is LOCKED DOWN keepin that bench warm

Wow. Media day is tomorrow. Wow.

Let's get it on!

I want to know A LOT more about these young invitees to training camp. I think it would be awesome if one of these kids is able to play his heart out and show something special enough to earn a spot with the team. Anything to make us stronger.

I read that Andrew Bynum has established a personal goal of being an All-Star this year. I guess we should just plan on having four of the first team All-Stars be Lakers this year.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

This is NOT a good news article. Here is quote from Drew:

>>>

"Everything is fine with the knee," Bynum said Tuesday during the Lakers' media at the team's training facility. "The knee is 100%. I'll have to wear a brace for the rest of my career."

>>>

I don’t understand this at all. The brace better be a different brace than he wore last year because that brace definitely limited how high he could jump and affected his quickness. This is terrible news in my opinion. If there are doctors out there who know more about this subject, please chime in. This is NOT good news in my opinion. It either represents a problem we were not aware of or an issue in Drew’s mind that he cannot get comfortable without worrying about another injury. Bummer news.

Tom

Kareem Rush has been invited to Clippers training camp. Interesting.

I'd like to see Kareem back and playing in Los Angeles.

Go Clippers!

GO LAKERS!!!!

Has anyone heard anything about Kobe's contract status? I really hoped it would be done by now? I heard they have to make him their offer by 10/31, is that true? What are we wating for? Does anyone have any info, I'm getting a little concerned!!

LakerTom: I thought PJ (or someone) said that Drew wearing braces was a precautionary thing. I coulda sworn I heard that when PJ did his interviews.

Yep, it's lot more tiring to win. Hahaha

Instead of of having your a-team trapping and chasing a team around that's trying to run out the clock, you have Luke passing to DJ for a shot with Sasha, Josh & Jordan watching.

Logic & trolls, an oxymoron.

Anyway, your beloved KG & Paula said they're going to win.
What are you worried about?

Justa,

I actually appreciated your posting the entire article about the new Lakers in camp rather than just the link. I disagree that it was too long. I don’t like there to be links when the article is short and to the point. And you are right that it was shorter than many other posts, including mine. :)

The blog season officially begins with roll call,
welcome home, Mamba 24

THANK YOU LAKER TOM

Mamba24 is back in full effect. Roll call, baby. I couldn't be happier. And a glorious return it is. Thanks for the first roll call of this potentially epic, earth-shattering, record-breaking, dynasty-making season.

Baby Outlaw has an awesome Kobe jersey, and I can't wait to put him in it for opening night.

Go Lake Show!

Kiwi,
"I'm not sure a player with 'pooh' on the back of his jersey is such a good omen either."

Yeah, but who's going to want to cover him? And think of the options it would give the announcers:

'Boy, they're really playing like _____ tonight!'

We all have our schticks. LOL. Seriously, I don’t mind it at all except for those situations where my stand on an issue gets distorted or exaggerated by bloggers who misrepresent or misinterpret my positions. I actually think if you ignore some of my natural hyperbole, my positions on most issues are usually right in line with the prevailing blog-sync-think. Well, maybe with a few unique twists. LOL.

Mike,

Nice recap of the home and away schedules for the first part of the season. I just think that you are being a little too conservative. Since we do not play San Antonio, Boston, Detroit, or Orlando until LeBronze and Shaq come to town on Christmas Day, I say let’s set a new NBA record and start the season with a 27-game winning streak, then dump the Cavs on Christmas, and follow up with another 6 wins against weak teams to set a new NBA record of 34 wins in a row, breaking the Lakers 33-wins.

Tom

A key reason the Lakers are so good is because of all the people who are NOT on the floor. The number of rings won by those people swamps the number of rings won by the players on any team.

Other than injury, they need to be careful about thinking they can "turn it off and on" - I don't know if that counts as complacency, since the Lakers always seem to have that attitude. It doesn't take much to turn a couple of wins into losses in the playoffs.

Mamba/Laker Tom,

We are in concurrence.

2009-2010: The Season of Obliteration

Last year was vindication. This year is about laying waste to the opposition. No mercy.

Last year we defied the haters (I'm looking at YOU T.J. Simers!).

This year we DESTROY the haters and drag their bruised and battered corpses behind our bus during the Championship parade.

Let's go.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Looks like we have the highest payroll in the league this season (more than Cavs and Magic!!)

With such a high payroll, the players should understand and justify that they deserve it. There should be no thought of complacency or its-ok in the player's minds. I am sure Phil and Kobe will preach this and keep our guys from wavering.

The person I am worried most regarding complacency is Odom, and this feeling in me has increased, thanks to his celebrity wife. We do not want to see a "Lamar and Khloe take LA" kind of show, we want to see "Lamar and Lakers take over NBA" show :)

Also, what about Morrison? Is he ever going to play, or is he going to just sit on the bench till his contract runs out? How good a defender is he? I think dude's like VladRad only in terms of D, right??

yellowfever,

"I'm sure shaq feels insulted by crabbron flaking on his party... And u know its gonna be simmering in shaqs system the whole year cause he's such a sensitive little girl"

I've inquired to multiple people as to why LeBron wasn't at Shaq's "Welcome to the Cavs!" Party. The best response I've received is an "I don't know" with a shrug.

Even among the LeBroniacs something doesn't feel right. There is a far more muted enthusiasm for this season as opposed to last. It is interesting to observe.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Staples24,

"COMPLACENCY = LAMAR ODOM"

You think Thriller (lifelong buddy of ODOOM) is going to let Lamar become complacent?

You think Derek Fisher is going to let Lamar become complacent?

You think KOBE BRYANT is going to let Lamar become complacent?

You think Laker Nation is going to let Lamar become complacent?

HELL NO!!!

Being a Chicken Little is SO 2007. Time to embrace a little Laker Tomesque optimism!

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!

Blitz, your opinion that Sun can not play, I'll leave that open...He was young, undeveloped, had to transition from China to Triangle. I think he deserved another look. I think he was a diamond in the rough, maybe not VS1, but he shows he can play at the international level at his age, and lack of physical maturity. I have always respected your opinions, well almost always, but I reflect to all those years of Sasha and Farmar, (Twins, Schwarzie and Devito) totally blowing it given true court time, not 29 minutes of waste. I always respect your opinions. And now they have picked up Gaffney, oh speaking out of both sides of their mouths. I'm losing respect for the management, if Sun was a question mark all year long last year, they should have alluded to it during the year. If her were that bad, they should have traded him at trade deadline for maybe another 2nd round pick. Blitz, you are concise, polite, precise and reasonable. You're in my top 3 bloggers, actually NUMBER ONE. I was high on Sun for the future.

Never, your name says it...
"Any way we can get Javaris Crittenton back? I think he will have a break out year. I still miss him.

They usually would try to avoid that for it has shown to cause respiratory depression. In a case of a 350 lb man this could be an issue, his body seeking more oxygen would have its heart pumping harder to supply...possible result, MI, Myocardial Infarction, autopsy-enlarged heart. However Dr's often overlook the warnings, intentional or negligently, and prescribe meds that can be avoided together, I know I'm a legal druggie. I think the man you were talking about was Simers...In my personal opinion, load him up!!!!
Why did you choose a name similar to hobbitimage, what does your name stand for, are you guys "Lord of the Rings" fans. I'm a Trekkie, so that's where mine came from human+anomaly (a word probably used 3-4 times in every Trek series, in every show)

So I think I was the one who came up with "Thriller", for RA37...finally the pasta stuck to the fridge.

LakerTom, maybe you should go back to your old supplier....you've changed a tad, not for better not for worse, but I have noticed.

Fantasy Leagues, NO NO NO NO, not here, if you want to do it, do it at work or do it somewhere else. It tends to confuse people who duck in and out of these blogs, and not everyone plays "fantasy leagues", maybe you guys can set your own up and go for it. I find at work, people wasting valuble time on it, they enjoy so good for them. But I think we should keep the blog to reality, as much as possible.

I havn't heard any comments back and I've asked, how is Morrison running...like Julia Childs from last year, or is he back to what % pre-injury.
Maybe K-Bros, (not K-Sis') you must be able to answer this one. Cuz he basically took the spot of my "child" Sun, (and money was the main issue...they said) and he was not pounded on by the bloggers. Yes, he has history, but so does Sun.

Look at who's posting now, the real bloggers, not the 1000 or so that jumped on after the championship, I go down the list, it's almost purely the regulars, hey remember the days of LGC/GWB and DingHo from Prattville, who I believe was actually Kevin Ding of the OC Register (lurking)?

Kobefan in Cupertino,

"Also, what about Morrison?"

Read up on the status of players reporting to camp.

The bit about Adam Morrison sounds hopeful.

What sounds BEST is that Josh Powell and Derek Fisher sound extremely motivated. That's good.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

GO LAKERS!!!

" It either represents a problem we were not aware of or an issue in Drew’s mind that he cannot get comfortable without worrying about another injury."

It's the latter plus the knee he wore his brace on was the one he had injured when he was kid before his time in the NBA. Again this only reinforces what I've been saying is that his mind is not in the game when he doesn't have the ball. That brace didn't really interfere with his quickness on his feet just the mere turning. Kobe played with a knee brace plenty of times and it hasn't really affected the way he played. Bynum is only good as a post defender when it comes to help defense he isn't as good. So that makes the only way for him to hope become an All-Star is through scoring which is not what the team needs (defense and more than just altered shots).

So the duel continues with Hobbitmage continuing to want the last word LOL. I want to end this but Hobbit you really need to stop man. No more LO stuff and no more cracks about us ok? But I will respond this once.

"I just finished watching Lakers @ Boston in February (?). There were 2
clear plays in the 3rd quarter & 4th quarter where Lamar was guarding
Rondo. Rondo blew past Lamar."

Rondo blew past LO/Fish/ and even Ariza. The only person he did not blew threw was Kobe Bryant.

"That's actually how I know that LakerTom favors Odom at SF on defense and Point-Forward on offense."

That's the point that I and everyone else who favored LO to run the point has been saying since well....LAST SUMMER. No one in their minds would put LO at the PG slot itself, nobody save perhaps you. And it took you like what 14 months to figure that out? Maybe you should ask my wife how to read stuff LOL.

"Only praise for his multiple facets. I specifically asked about when/how those facets would be manifested and how we would be better than a more traditional lineup. The specifics were not given. "

“There’s a variety of guys can fit into that but also those five as an overwhelming group that can do some things - with the type of offense we run, they can function quite well without a point guard,” Jackson said.

Kobe defending the PG (and become his self at the Olympics), Artest defending SG's, LO defending SF, and it doesn't take a college degree with Pau and Bynum. Offensive wise simple you got still good spot up shooter in Artest (40% from 3pt land), 2 forwards who can go inside out (Odom and Gasol) and a post up guy who if he has a favorable matchup (Bynum). Doesn't take a scientist to know that. Of course it has its weaknesses too but was merely explaining the strengths of it.

I wonder why I bother and keep thing up man. Heck you couldn't even remember that LO started Games 4 and 5 of the Utah series and Games 2,3,4 of the Houston series and accused me of lying. You seem to either can't read or have a memory problem and telling me I can't read? Tell your wife to remind you of things before you tell me I can't read.

And here's another one for you

Have a nice day Hobbit. I'm more than willing to be calm unlike you who keeps the subject about LO and fails to answer my questions on how to develop players. LOL. Have my wife read that to you.

Edwin,

I am waiting for the Village Idiot - oops I mean 131-92 to tell us how the Celtic Dynasty never really ended.....I mean the fact that over the last thirty plus years the Lakers are clearly the superior franchise means nothing. He does have a point, just think about all those times the Celtics have repeated since the 1968-69 season - that just sends shivers down my Laker loving spine. Oh wait - they haven't repeated since then. Even Detroit and Houston have gone back-to-back since then - as have the Lakers and Bulls. Too bad the Celtics didn't make it back last year...heck they couldn't even beat the Cavs that lost to the Magic, which got beat by the Lakers - so at best Boston may have been the 4th best team if one is being generous?

Anyway I agree Edwin, the Lakers biggest obastacle is complacency - it leads to many bad things. Go Lakers, get Championship #16!

Peace,
Eagleboy

Good Morning Everyone...

Taliq....I hate the crabs..The whole damm lot of them..And that now includes Crabiel Oniel.....lol...

The new advertising has begun for the NBA on our free to air 24 hour sports channel..1HD.....And what do ya know, its not based around that crab.Instead the Lakers,Magic and Celtics get the lions share of the Ads..Just a snippet of Crab Boy hitting that buzzer beater against the Magic last playoffs..We will be getting 3 games a week plus some hardwood classics..Nice..

The Crabs have more issues this morning with Delonte West going AWOL from camp today..I hope he can get some help,it sounds like he needs support through this part of his life..

How long before Crabiel starts to rock the boat?...

I tip the French spider to force the organization to offer him a contract because of his outstanding play through camp..

My wife owns the computer for the next 9 hours so i hope you all have a great day and remember .....Create a space and find the time share that space with your mates...TRUST ME...

that's three for fantasy league. If i can get a couple more verbal commitments, and it gets approved by the head office (BK, cause he's got more of his head showing than anyone. J/k, really) I'll create the league and send the ID #s to the K Bros. Send them a note or something if you want to join, and then we'll start debating draft times and settings. Hope this works.

welcome back, um, ROLL CALL, if that is your real name. Haha. Mamba, i never knew why you left in the first place, except maybe that you know how much of the love you get whenever you come back. Strange news about Bynum and his brace. Possibly he has suffered some sort of permanent injury that would allow his knee-cap to slip in and out of place like Mel Gibson's characters shoulder in Lethal Weapon 2.

Sounds like the Laker weight training staff is pretty dedicated to over-all, comprehensive fitness and conditioning. Luke sounds a little out of shape, that could result in him getting even less minutes. This will obviously impact our Repeat chances.

Farmar also sounds like he blows off this aspect of being an NBA player and I start to wonder if he'll be here by season's end. It's good to see Sasha working hard, but I think he could use the yoga over everyone else. That and decaf.

No doubt Mbenga will show up in shape, but I want to see him slow the game down, for himself, and work within the structure. He's so athletic that you want to see him get better but when he gets the ball one arms moving full speed, one leg is moving double-speed, he's like looks like a flurry of arms and legs jumping hither and yon.

Mamba 24, I'm Jamie Freaking Sweet.

Is anyone else stoked on Kobe picking up some of Dreams low-post moves? This solidifies in my mind that PJ is going to look to have the ball absolutely pounded inside. Less drive and kick and more drive and dish to a big. Or, look for Kobe to operate as a 3 more often but set up on the low block so he can embarass his defender with an array of spin moves, up and under scoops and other fabulous tricks to get the rock in the sock.

GO LKAERS!!!!!

I wonder if 4th person exists, like if I said The Wes Joe Nixon, would that be 4th person? Probably not.

But these are the kinds of thoughts a week in Vegas inspire from us. That's right--that was me lounging by the pool at the Cancun resort in Vegas for 6 straight days. The pools in the Midwest seem sadder now, like they know they'll be freezing over long before they feel the Sun’s warmth again for any extended time.

Anyone watching the national parks show this week by Ken Burns? Must say, I'm loving it. It's a sad, heroic story I think. Thank God for guys like John Muir.

One last thought. This week in Vegas was the 1st time I've seen HD TV for any extended time. I'm slow, I know. After a week of seeing it on a giant screen I'm pretty amazed by it, but also strangely dismayed by the way it makes certain things look. For example, sports, high-tech shows on things like warfare or history are super, super cool, but things like old westerns and older movies in general look terrible to me. They have a phony, hyperreal quality I can only compare to some of the deteriorated black and white films from the 50's. Look at the old Twilight Zone where the bum finds the magic Santa sack that has all the gifts in it. That specific Twilight Zone episode and HDTV applied to some old films have a similar look, like something went wrong in the developing process.

I like my films to have different, distinctive looks (be it by time or intention) and I think HD TV does something to strip away a layer that I like. So I'll not worry about the HDTV craze for now.

But the football? My lord, that was gnarly. I just value film over sport and don't want my movies messed with too much. Don't get me wrong, I love attention paid to old films and I love restorations. Love them big time. Like Tarrentino's remastering and redubbing of IRON MONKEY was hot, and the new (now old) remastering of the SEVENTH SEAL is flabbergastingly good, but I don't like the unveiling that HD does to some other old films.

Wes

Mamba24, I'm in for roll call. Can't wait to see the purple and gold playing again.

Can't wait for the ring ceremony.

I'm just wondering what kinnd of brace we're talking about. If it's more of a regular knee sleeve, that's okay but I really hope he's not going to wear the contraption from last year - it seemed cumbersome and uncomfortable and very limiting.

Eagleboy said: "I am waiting for the Village Idiot - oops I mean 131-92 to tell us how the Celtic Dynasty never really ended....."

Heh. In his mind, the NBA hasn't had a full & complete season since June 2008 as well.

Pssst...don't tell anybody, but I think he's secretly a Laker Fan. He spends more time on this blog than Mamba24 does!

Tell me, Uncle Rico, why are you so OBSESSED with us?

JustLakerFan,
Thanks for sharing on the Lakers training of Mr. Shaefer. AK/BK did not allow you to cut & paste because it is a thread by itself competing with their complacency. I think your post was on the spot and up to date to what Lakers were doing in the off season.
Mr. Nano,
It seems ironic that the people who are doing all the training on how to raise their hands in coordination with their feet as defensive moves are the ones rotting on the bench during the playoffs. They memorized the training repertoire but never learn how to shoot accurately. The players who did all the work like Kobe, Pau, LO and Fisher were self motivated and did what they have to do without photo opportunities.
Eagle Boy,
Did you notice about the Celtics move this off season? it was all defensive and responding to lakers move. They could not hide the fact that their triumvirate are aging and added another an aged Wallece, why not get Bill Walton and Bill Russell too? they can help. lol!

I remember watching the 2001 Lakers defend their title. It was often a very painful sight. There was so much drama between Kobe and Shaq. And the team just felt like they could turn it on when they wanted. The result was an underachieving 56-26 record. Then they clicked in the playoffs going 15-1.

One of the things I loved about last season's Lakers was the absence of the whole Lakers soap opera. The team was focused on the goal. Sure they let a few wins get away, but they came to play just about every night.

I truly hope the team is not about to turn into a circus again. I had enough of that during the Kobe-Shaq years. Sure they were winning. It just didn't have to be that hard. Hopefully, this years team does not make it harder than it has to be. Because repeating WILL be hard.
