Why Ron Artest in purple and gold is, if nothing else, a win for the K Brothers

July 4, 2009 | 11:52 am

Because our postgame breakdowns, practice reports and general Laker coverage will soon be decorated Nba_g_artest_580 with quotes like the kind that followed Ron Artest's ejection in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semi-Finals.  Remember the tale about a friend who was killed with a chair leg thrown by an angry member of the crowd?  And the casual way Artest caps this brutal, bizarre story?

"So I'm accustomed to playing basketball really rough."

Between that and mentioning how he told Kobe Bryant, "Don't you know you're hitting Ron Artest," I'm chalking thhis up as one very solid interview.

There was also this sandwich-riffic gem after Houston forced a Game 7:

"'Five Dollar Foot-long' is one of the best songs. That's a hot song. You've got the FreeCreditReport.com, and then 'Five Dollar Foot-long' comes on. When 'Five Dollar Foot-long' comes on, they should play that in the club. They should play all those in the club."

I'm also a fan of "I've been in the stands before."

There's also a fantastic interview on Sacramento Radio's Carmichael Dave Show, where Artest makes the host suffer dead air so he can gobble Flintstone's gummy vitamins, then describes his humanistic approach while choosing which ones to eat:

"Well, I try not to eat the lady. I try not to eat the man! Just give me the car. I try to find the car. Worst case scenario, I eat the lady."

And these quotes, ladies and gentlemen, are simply from the 2009 postseason alone.   Not too shabby, indeed.

Now that Ron Ron is now a Laker, it's only fitting to check out an interview he conducted with Kobe Bryant for the Best Damn Sports Show period interview during last season's playoffs.   Artest recollects when he and Kobe battled as teenagers- Artest admits he got torched- and talks about shoving around Dwyane Wade as preparation for an impending battle with Bryant.  Ron Ron also doesn't just give props to Kobe's game.   He sounds ready to request an autograph (and this would have been a prime opportunity, since Kobe's daughter isn't around).

And finally, if you ever desired (further) proof that BK and I sometimes have no idea what we're talking about, check out this 710 ESPN podkast where we talked about how a March 12th win over the Rockets in Houston represented, among other things, a failed audition by Ron Artest to join the Lake Show.

That Artest-Bryant interview was great. I'm more excited than ever about his coming on board.

#4,

Excellent post as usual. How goes it, #4?

>>> In my line of business, we would describe the effect as multiplicative as

I loved that multiplicative vs. additive. What is your line of business.

>>> The good news is that in one of the reports (Eric Pincus' I believe), Lamar

>>> Mitch may just be working on the money details.

Man, those former point guards always seem to know what they are talking about. I noticed that exact same thing. Eric also said that the Lakers have no intention of playing hardball with Lamar but rather want to reward him for his performance and coming off the bench. I agree with you. Lamar is a done deal just working on the details.

Tom

OMG

"Worst case scenario, I eat the lady."

Best.Quote.Ever.

man, his quotes are hilarious!

CHAMPIONS AGAIN IN 2010!

AK - be careful what you wish for, your all consuming workload just got bigger. Still, an addition like this must be gratifying, it'll open many avenues of pur entertainment. Is John Black putting up mattresses in the bunker?

People needed further proof? Really?

BK

Ron Artest is the gift that keeps on giving. Congrats AK!

rudy is a great offensive piece but he doesn't play defensive. i don't know why fans want him, haven't we learned we have offense we need defense. defense wins championships remember.

also, everyone complained about jordan's attitude about pt but look at rudy. rudy is a rookie and was complaining about playing time. he also threatened to go back to europe if hedo goes to portland. rudy also made a big deal about the foul in the press. i mean remember when kobe got dirty fouls by dauhntay jones he said jones was playing good defense. rudy i think would complain even more in sasha. sorry we don't need that attitude in the locker room. he is good and he just needs to mature. he also was complaining during the olympics about the us team. sorry he seems to not care about the team instead about himself. dude, get over yourself. you're good but you have a lot to learn.

yep lamar is not goin anywhere. he's like ronron, they've both gotten paid already.. now its all about establishing some sort of legacy and living the good life.

3 years, 80 million, and out!

love that guy.

2009 Countdown To A New Nickname For Ron Artest!

{Okay, now that Ron Artest is a Laker, "Ron Ron" has to go. It is too belittling a nickname. So, Jon K. has personally taken on the responsibility of convincing Laker Nation to create a new nickname for Artest and due to his obsessive Lakerholic nature he will beat this deadhorse with a whip until it's a bloody mess, so I suggest everyone get on board with this idea immediately if you know what's best for you.}

Suggested names:

1. The Wolverine (defensive prowess and claws)
2. The Pitbull (like a pitbull, one of the most loyal and friendly dogs in the world... just don't get them mad).
3. El Toro (the bull!)
4. Mr. Artest
5. The Quotation Mark (due to his being a quote machine)

Please feel free to offer your own suggestions.

wes,

>>> Interesting article from 20 second timeout. Forgive if it's been read or posted.

You never need to apologize about posting about a Kevin Ding article. While it is one of the most overused clichés, leadership by example is really what leadership is all about. You are so right that Kobe sets the example of hard work that encourages and motivates his teammates to work as hard. Jordan, Sasha, Andrew, even Pau have all improved their work ethic and as a result their abilities by following Kobe’s leadership.

Thanks, wes. Kobe was really the most valuable player in the regular season, too. What did he do? Make his teammates much better than they were in last year’s Finals.

Tom

This was on a rocket's blog..(I'm not sure that applied to sign-and-trades. I checked yesterday and was told that the Rockets did look into an exchange of sign-and-trade deals, but LA was not interested.)

Could this be true that the rockets tried the sign and trade with the Lakers but the Lakers declined it. Why wouldn't they want to keep their MLE?

I like Hightest for Artest!

"2009 Countdown To A New Nickname For Ron Artest!"

Here's one for you Jon K.:

Bill.

LOL!

Straight from the horses mouth.

Hugo,

Thanks for your response. I really am not down on Rudy and would probably take him in a trade for Sasha because I think he has a better stroke and is more consistent. There have just been so many posts where people want to trade Farmar for him, which don’t make sense because he can’t play the point even in the Triangle. Trading Sasha for him would be great but we would also have to take back another player to match salaries. And no doubt Pau would love it. What I would obviously like, since we’re talking about Spaniards, is to somehow trade Sasha and Luke for Ricky Rubio. And I still contend that there is no way the Lakers trade Ammo. He is worth $10M by letting his contract expire. In other words, he will pay for Artest every year but next year. Ammo for Artest. Now that is a pretty sweet trade. Only thing that could screw it up is Ammo turning out to be a diamond in the rough. That would be great but I doubt it is going to happen. And Pau Gasol is the best power forward in the NBA. Lakers could have 4 All-Stars next year.

Tom

It was mentioned on the last thread as well..It said at hoopsworld that Nate said he had been contacted by the Lakers and the Magic..what is Mitch up to?...

Jon K...His name should be FULL METAL JACKET.............

If you look at Artest's build, it is kind of like a pitbull's. Strong and compact.

I'm liking "The Pitbull" or "The Pit" for Mr. Artest.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Hey, my Artest Muppet comment here got some face time on USA Today - Woo Hoo!
CBS SportsLine picked it up as well - haha

Jon,

The Psycho fits best. The Punisher would also work. The Mongoose (although he never could catch the Mamba)? Best “The” nicknames for Lakers:

Kobe – The Mamba
Drew – The Beast
Fish – The Bulldog
Lamar – The Candyman
Pau – The Spaniard
Ron – The Psycho
Sasha – The Machine
Jordan – The Zohan
Luke – The Duke

Tom

Ron Artest said on his Twitter said he had been in LA for only one day and already has a movie part.

FA's out there, come to LA and the Lakers will make you famous.

Artest name: The Beast (from Revelation)
Number: 666

Jon K,

The word that always crosses my mind when thinking about Ron Artest is 'crazy'.

Ron "Crazy" Artest

Or we could just call him "Loco" Artest.

Go Lakers!

Steve McNair got shot in the head. Wow.

RIP

Go Lakers!

Ron is a gold mine of funny things:

Greg: "Could this be true that the rockets tried the sign and trade with the Lakers but the Lakers declined it. Why wouldn't they want to keep their MLE?"

Trevor, because he got a raise of over 20% from his previous season, qualifies as a Base Year Compensation player. Making the salaries match is a difficult proposition.

From the Salary Cap Faq:

"Base year compensation (BYC) prevents another salary cap loophole. Without BYC, a team over the salary cap that wants to trade a player, but can't because of the Traded Player exception (which says teams can't take back more than 125% of the salary they trade away), could just sign the player to a new contract that fits within the desired range, then do the trade. BYC says "if you re-sign a player and give him a big raise, then for a period of time his trade value will be lower than his actual salary."

We would have to give up something else in order for that to work salary-wise.

What about Artest's number? he asked for help about it...

From Kill Bill "the crazy 88"

GO LAKERS!!!

"Loco" is good for nickname.

should wear number 00. Cause hes so good defensively he holds you to double zero points.

CHAMPIONS AGAIN IN 2010!

Staples 24

If Hedo could change his mind, then why can't Ariza? Of course, Artest could change his mind as well?

As Mitch said, nothing is certain until they sign on the dotted line.

So what if Ariza did change his mind and came back to Mitch with his tail between his legs?

"Mitch! I'm so sorry. I fired my [blank] agent and then kicked him in the [blank]. Please Mitch! Can I come back?!"

Would we take him back, and for what price?

It would be to his benefit in the long run to play for the Lakers and take even a low price, with short years, no?

Artest ain't so tough. From the Artest 'Golden Moments' files

Is there anything else you want the fans to know about your time over there?(in Africa)

"A monkey tried to attack me! I was coming out of my tent and I saw a monkey. I was filming the monkey and saw it running towards me so I ran back inside my tent—you could see my camera shaking all over the place! I got out of my tent and tried to find the monkey, but he was in the tree. When the monkey started to come down a little bit, I ran back inside my tent again! When I unzipped my tent it wasn't there, but then, a third time, the monkey peeked it's head over, right over my tent just like a human! Then he just sat down in my chair and looked at me. It was the funniest thing ever! Some monkeys are nice. Some monkeys will attack you."

Jon,

Mad Artest fits best.

Jon,

Nothing fits as well as TRU WARRIOR.

Tom

the pit-bull and loco are both pretty good nicknames. how about "Bam-Bam" for his fondness of Flinstones vitamins? or perhaps 5 Dolla' or Footlong?

i was reading some of those letters to the editor on the Times. man, seems like a lot of people are furious with the ariza non-signing, and replacing him with Ron. even though i was preaching "keep ariza," i have since moved on, and will place my faith in mitch, phill, and the team.

So many excellent names. "Bill" still works for me. I'd add "best friend" to the mix.

I like what I saw of Shannon Brown this year. I hope he can stay with the Lakers this year and develop, he is athletic and plays hard. But in spite of the love he gets on this blog, he is not going to be the Lakers' starting point guard this year.

The Lakers will not go into a season where they are hunting for a championship with Shannon Brown penciled in as the key guy at PG.

The guys has played a total of 92 games in the NBA, averaging 10 minutes a game.

He has 65 career assists. He has shot 41% from the field. He plays tough D but he has not demonstrated he is a playmaker or a shooter.

He has some potential, but this is not a guy you count on if you are playing for a title.

In hindsight, it now looks like getting Artest was really the Lakers' Plan A, and resigning Ariza was Plan B.
I don't think the main factor here was money, the main factor is Kobe's championship window.
Artest's peak as a player coincides w/Kobe's since they're about the same age, so the Lakers are putting all their chips on getting 3 more championships in the next 3 years.
If Kobe and PJ can run the table on 4 straight championships they will be able to do what the MJ/PJ and Shaq/PJ combos could not do.
After 4 straight, both PJ and Kobe could retire having accomplished more than past history. And Kobe w/d have 7 rings, one more than MJ, and will probably have to beat Lebron more than once in the Finals to get the 4 straight.

It still is not the great improvement that keeps the Lakers solidly in front of the pack for next year as other teams have improved too. A lot will depend on how much better Bynum will be.

Houston fans call him Crazy Pills. I've always dug that.

I got a great nickname for Ron Artest:

The Arbiter

In German, arbeiter means worker or manual laborer.

In English, the defination is a person chosen to judge or decide a disputed issue.

Plus Ron's mad dog defense...

Good Afternnon Charles....Good Afternoon Everyone....

4th of July makes me always think of when I lived in Hawaii ('70 to '73), and what the Fourth and New Years' (crater festival, oh yeah) sounded like all over the island, quite unigue indeed...happy 4th everybody (including communists and facists even, but not Celtic fans)...

one thing I haven't seen regarding the Artest deal:

(though I might have missed it due to the gauntlet of posts (mega, as it were) about it etc, so sorry if I am being redundent redundently (again) )

and that's the spin that if indeed the deal is for three years (whcih would be a lot more desireable than 5, unless of course we have won three straight titles and those extra two years are looking very fortuitous etc), and the worst case senario of Artest being a complete cancer along with several incidents of inspired lunacy, our commitment to him isn't insurmountable...

indeed, with the money we are paying and his talent (potential nut balling not withstanding) and the length of his contract that may be left (1 or 2 years by then) he would be a very tradable asset and a seemingly easy one (of course that's if he hasn't convinced the rest of the league that he is certifiable or so)..

in other wordy words, even with a worse case senario, the risk isn't very big at all---especially not verses the potential gains...

and even though I have never been an Artest fan, to say the least, I will be whole heartedly rooting for him and for his success, which in turn is success for the Lakers...

and like everybody else (including him, no matter how he spins it now) I am very sorry to see Ariza split, but I do think Mitch made a hell of a move (complete with ample balls to prove it)...

and I promise you, Mitch ain't done yet...

AS ALWAYS, AS EVER, ANOTHER GREAT DAY (AND CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON) TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!

GO LAKERS !!!

AK/BK brothers, enjoyed your post on Ron and the interview..

WHEN DID THE LAKERS DECIDE UPON ARTEST?

The big question that is still unanswered to my satisfaction is when did the Lakers really make the decision to sign Ron Artest rather than Trevor Ariza? There are several inside versions circulating, some saying the Lakers never made an offer and others saying they did. You have to wonder whether we will ever know the whole truth as they call it.

But lets step back a little. Remember those weird tweets supposedly from Ron on his
Twitter account saying “Lakers this or that?” Everybody thought at the time that it either was not really Ron or that he was just playing with the press in fun. Or maybe not. In retrospect, you have to believe that the Lakers were most likely actually talking to Ron well before they ever sat down to allegedly negotiate with Ariza and Lee.

I also don’t remember when Trevor and Lee met with Mitch but Jeff Eisenberg of the Press-Enterprise talks about the Lakers two-day effort to recruit Ron Artest where “Bryant texted him repeatedly, Phil Jackson and Magic Johnson had lengthy phone conversations with him on Wednesday, and owner Jerry Buss took him to lunch Thursday.” Someone needs to construct a timeline of all of these events.

Much seems to contradict the version that says that the Lakers met with Ariza and Lee in the evening and then changed courses and closed a deal with Artest the very next day. More likely, the Lakers had already decided to go with Artest before the meeting with Ariza and Lee, which is why they were not encouraging and likely hoping Ariza and Lee would react negatively to make the entire process less of a negative PR move.

Bottom line, the Lakers just couldn’t pass a chance to finally get Ron Artest in purple and gold, even if it cost them a potentially great young player and reminded everybody that in the end this is still a business. Jerry Buss may be the greatest owner in the NBA but he is still a smart businessman who rarely allows emotion to sway his judgment. You have to feel for Trevor because he did everything we asked for and more but due to the new capenomics suddenly found himself as the odd man out. Well, he did get $25M.

And while the Lakers played hardball with Trevor as just business, it appears from the signs that the Lakers are not going to do the same with Lamar but rather want to reward him for his great play and for coming off the bench. So while Jerry and Mitch can make the tough decision to let a great prospect like Trevor go in exchange for a polarizing player like Ron Artest, they also still have enough heart to appreciate Lamar Odom.

When Mitch has finalized negotiating the contracts with Lamar and Shannon and getting all the details worked out for those contracts plus Ron and Kobe, he will be able to sit back with great pride at having accomplished more than just bringing last year’s squad back intact. Instead, he brought them back a bigger, tougher, and better team. That is why he will be the NBA EOY for 2009/10. Congratulations, Mitch. Superb job.

Here is the Lakers 13-man roster for 2009/10 – Sign me up for that 70 win bandwagon.

PG – Fisher, Farmar
SG – Bryant, Vujacic, Brown
SF – Artest, Walton, Morrison
PF – Gasol, Odom, Powell
CE – Bynum, Mbenga

Tom

And just when you thought this summer could not get even more exciting?

Houston's agreement with free-agent forward Trevor Ariza appears to have pushed Wafer out of town.

Agent Mitchell Butler said he was "floored" that the Rockets pursued Ariza.

"None of it made any sense to me," Butler said. "We had a good conversation with them prior to free agency. I expected they would look at a center and then come back and look in-house."

Why he didn't tell the monkey: do you know you are trying to attack Ron Artest???

Maybe Ron threw beer on him... and the monkey was suspended to be in the park for a while...

more thoughts, seemingly....

another thing that has been on my mind as far as free agency and how it is shaking out this year, I haven't heard anything about lower level teams, like absolutely nothing...

it seems they have to just wait until the more high profile teams battle out signing whoever and the smoke clears and then they get to battle for the leavenings...

how would you like to be a fan of those invisible teams...their blogs must be the most depressing things on the net, and about as much fun as disentary...

and how is pairity in the league served---really only by the draft it seems, unless a lower team has a crap load of money and the player in question doesn't give a rat's rosey about winning a title...

if i was a little more compasionate, i might even feel sorry for those teams and their fans---but I'm not and I don't, at least not for the fans, they have a choice don't they...so suffer and live to chant "Beat LA" until your vocal cords are ripped to shreds...go for it..

hello my name is Floyd and I am a certifiable uncurable Lakerholic...

GO LAKERS !!!

ron should where number 18....because three years with kobe, pau, artest, lamar, bynum, equals three championships....making us have more rings than the celtics....dont you agree thats the perfect number....trade sasha or give up your number...lol

leonardbast.

I think ‘Footlong” was already used by John Holmes. LOL.

Tom

I'm gonna nickname him Trevor. I'm not close to being sold this is good for the Lakers.

Ron Artest PItbull
ArmPitbull

How about "Maniac" or "Asylum" for Artest???LOL. I think Pitbull is a good moniker for him.

Laker Tom and others,

What do you think about trading Sasha for Kirk Hinrich? I think that Hinrich is a fantastic defender and would shoot well in the Triangle system. Hinrich with Kobe and Artest would cause absolute havoc on the perimeter defensively. Hinrich could also play either PG or SG which is a plus in our system. I like Rudy Fernandez as well, but Hinrich is so solid defensively and could guard opposing guards and even gave Paul Pierce fits in the playoffs. Hinrich would be a great addition to our team. Go Lakers!!!

Fatty,

"A monkey tried to attack me! I was coming out of my tent and I saw a monkey. I had forgotten about this one.

Wow. Ummm... yeah...

So... yeah... well... umm... I understand about the monkey thing. Creepy little devils they are. Ummm... yeah... well, no monkeys in Los Angeles! So Ron "The Pitbull" Artest won't have to worry about that which, I'm sure, is a weight off of everyone's mind, right?

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!!!!

Damn Steve McNair dead.

First Michael Jackson now Stevie. I'm no Ravens/Titans fan but he was a good quarterback in his prime.
