Lamar Odom calls Jerry Buss

So sayeth our man Jim Hill, a cool cat with the best hair in the biz.

The purpose of said phone call?  Repairing any bridges in need of fixing after Doc B. didn't take kindly to un-returned calls from LO's agent Jeff Schwartz.   Does that mean LO is definitely favoring the Lakers over, say, the Miami Heat, who have reportedly offered him five years/35 mil (or haven't, according to the Tweets of Ric Bucher)?  No, but it does stand to reason that Lamar hasn't decided to close his purple and gold chapter.  Otherwise, unless Odom wants an invite to Jerry Buss' poker game whenever he's in L.A., I don't know why he'd bother placing the call.

A promising development for those hoping LO will stick around.  We'll have more details as they emerge.

AK

NOTE: Click below the jump for LO related comments from Portland GM Kevin Pritchard...

With my weekend having opened up unexpectedly, I decided to make the drive to Vegas for the last few days of summer league action.  Friday night I spoke briefly with Portland GM Kevin Pritchard.  With Utah having officially matched the Blazers' offer sheet to Paul Millsap earlier in the day, Portland is back to having money to burn.  One theoretical target:  Lamar Odom.

Q: With the news on Millsap, does that change the way you look at Odom?

A: Right now, we're going to regroup, we're going to look at the landscape.  We're still going to be aggressive in the marketplace, but we don't know who that is yet.  We want to, I guess, reassess the landscape.  That would be the best way to put it.

Q: Is Odom on it?

A: Yeah, but I want to sit down with (coach) Nate (McMillan).  We haven't really gone through our process again, and we'll have to do that.

Q: With the economics of the game changing, the cap going down, and so on, has that changed how you feel like you have to use the space you have?  Does it put more pressure on you to spend this summer, or risk your cap room disappearing?  (Note- the Blazers also have to factor in extensions on guys like Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge.)

A: Not so much. We'll look at using the space with the right free agents, but it's important for us that we look at all the options. You've got trades, we can do uneven trades in terms of salaries (because the Blazers are below the salary cap, rules allow them to make trades in which the salaries don't match), straight signings as free agents.  We're going to look at the landscape and see what's out there now.

Pritchard certainly didn't take the opportunity to send signals that Odom was a target.  As I mentioned earlier in the day, just because something isn't said publicly doesn't mean there isn't a plan behind the scenes, but if there is serious interest up north Pritchard didn't drop any hints.  Hopefully the news AK mentioned above is a step to making all of this moot, anyway.

Several hours before Bucher's tweet saying that Miami had not made an offer to Odom, this AP story said they did (but terms were undisclosed).

http://bit.ly/DQb0X

Whether or not an "official" offer has been made, it seems obvious that they've discussed a 5-year deal at the MLE. This is the same thing as Ariza's agent claiming the Lakers never gave them an offer. You don't send an offer sheet to the agent if he's already told you he won't sign it.

So Odom should now have a clear idea of what he can get from the Heat, and hopefully his talk with Dr. Buss gave him a good idea of what he can get from the Lakers. It's decision time.

With Portland still apparently Odom-shy, as long as they stay out of it there's no reason why this thing can't get done by Monday.

what are we? 5? You didn't call me back, now I'm gonna pout... Lamar called Dr. Buss because he wants the cash, the CAESH, the MOOLA, the LARGE BILLS...

Miami is putting on a good show for Dwayne Wade, that appears to be it. Lamar's agent, as well as Ariza's are living in the past, the age of OVERPAYING is over, look around the league, David Lee, who would have gotten a large offer from a couple of teams 2 years ago is sitting by a pool somewhere, waiting for someone to call. Agents are going to have to change their tactics. The big ones, with a roster of clients, can threaten to take their OTHER players elsewhere if a team doesn't sign one of their mid-level player clients to a good contract. Superstars are going to be used as leverage. They already are but with money getting tight, get ready for the, "if you don't sign Chuck Nevitt to a mid-level contract, I'm gonna take your 2nd and 3rd best players and next year and put them on other teams" threat.

Lamar's agent pushed as hard as he could, he did his job but there's not much left to push in this market. Good cop, bad cop. Hopefully Lamar called Jerry Buss and said let's have dinner, smooth some things out...

I just got a postcard from Lamar Odom from Indianapolis. He's
signing with the Pacers because he really respects Larry Bird.

same Horry who said Orlando in 6?!

some people don't age very well. ( indeed he had many great shots in his career, but for the past 3-4 years it was painful to see him playing. his shots were very OFF, almost like someone who never, ever made a 3 point shot - also i think his conditioning was very poor - kinda like LO, a slacker but much smarter and fearless)

I have no idea who Lamar Odom is as a person, but he lost a son who was the same age as mine and from that point forward I have been in awe of what he has been able to do as a professional basketball player.

He helped my favorite sports team win a championship which I was able to watch and celebrate with my living son and for that I will always think highly of the man.

I hope he finds a deal that is best for him and his family. I hope it's with the Los Angeles Lakers because I would hate to have to root against the man.

Lamar, good luck, and may the best contract you get offered come from us.

Thank you.

Andrew Z - this is one of the classiest posts I've read in a long time. You're a good fan and a good man.

I know a person that works at the Conga room at L.A. Live. I ended up getting a job there. One night Lamar came in after a game, and his sister came into the kitchen around 12am during the club hours. His sister demanded us to make Lamar a steak. It turned to a huge fuss. She said "After a game Lamar wants a streak!" That was my only impression of the dude. Selfish.

I just intercepted a morse code message from Moscow. Lamar
has agreed to sign with Memphis for a million dollars a year and
all the Goo Goo Clusters he can eat.

A skywriter just flew over my house and traced out the message:
L A M A R - N Y C.

Clearly that means that Lamar is going to sign with the Knicks.

They're really going at it on satellite radio right now. Stephen B. Smith
of XM radio is declaring that Lamar has signed with the Wizards,
while J.B. Adande of Sirius is reporting that he's signed with
the Charlotte Bobcats.

And the truth is, THEY'RE BOTH RIGHT!!!! Lamar has signed a
joint (huh huh) contract with the Washington Wizards and the
Charlotte Bobcats to split time between the two teams. That
way they can pay him 10 million dollars, but only 5 million each.

News at 11.

I was just in a seance, and Walter Cronkite informs me that
Lamar has been signed and traded to Oklahoma City for
Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, and Russell Westbrook.

Obviously we can't win a championship with all those young
guys, so there must be another trade in the works to dump them
off for a quality veteran player.

LTLF: the first couple were funny, but I think that ship has sailed.

>>>with all of this money committed to other players, how on
>>>earth are we going to be able to re-sign pau after this
>>>next season???????

Here's how.

There are currently 14 teams over the luxury tax.

According to ESPN (didn't run the numbers myself), if the salary
cap goes down next season as much as David Stern expected
it to, then 24 of the 30 teams will be over the luxury tax when
we get to the sumer of re-signing Pau.

For the 6 teams under, it will be a jackpot scenario. How the
Luxury Tax works is they take all that tax money from teams
who overspent and divide it up between the teams that are
under the tax. None of those 6 teams will be wanting to add
15 million plus in salary and ruin getting their big slice of the
money pie.

Hopefully, Pau can see the writing on the wall that ALL salaries
for NBA players are going down. Basically, some of the teams
are close to spending themselves into bankruptcy.

With less and less teams able to spend more than the MLE,
there will be less competition for players, and with no threat
that other teams will overpay their own free agents if they dont,
teams will offer their players more moderate salaries. Only
guys like Kobe and LeBron & DWade will get maxed out deals.
You won't see maxed out deals for players at the level of
Rashard Lewis any more. At least not until most of the teams
get their spending down a lot.

Posted by: Long Time Laker Fan | July 18, 2009 at 08:21 AM

LTLF,

the collected money from the luxury tax is divided by 1/30 and only that amount is given to each team under the luxury tax line. THe remaining money goes to the NBA for payments to other things. And then, there is an escrow system in the NBA wherein part or the players' salaries are deducted and put in an escrow account. If the total salaries of the players (the whole NBA) exceed 50.2%(not sure exactly) of the NBA's revenue, then the NBA will get from the escrow account the equivalent of the exceeding amount and it will be distributed again to the teams regardless of luxury status

Andrew Z,

Good take, nice to hear from you. A lot of things can be true at the same time. One of those things is, Lamar Odom is still one of the good guys of the NBA.

The other thing that's undoubtedly true is the Jerry Buss rolls high and he's feelin' this economy. He's not Buffet flush. Give him a chance to save 27 mil, and the equal amount in meaningless luxury tax, and that's got to be tempting. He undoubtedly put his best offer out there because he liked the idea of a returning player he likes.

Lamar's choices are all good ones. No pity parade necessary basketball wise. Jerry will still have THE ticket in town.

Fans, that blog mid summer, spend their emotions. It's still a good deal.

John Bollinger just posted on FSPN that there's a statistical
likelyhood that Lamar will sign with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.
I don't believe him, but I do like saying Fort Wayne Mad Ants.

hopalong,

Jim Hill IS secret agent man.

This is a well known fact among the clandestine communities.

I just got a telegram that Lamar has signed with the Chinese
National Team. A spokesperson for the Chinese team said,
"You may having destroyed Yao and stealing Chinese Magic Johnson,
but we now having secret weapon that was most reprehensible
for your NBA champion teams. LET'S SPORTS!"

LTLF

I just got a postcard from Lamar Odom from Ukraine.

he is thinking to play for Dynamo Kiev, but he is still considering the offer from CSKA Moscow who promised to build him a beach. St-Petersburg (not Florida) has a beach but he will have to take mandatory skating lessons as insurance for breaking his knees.

I just had a peyote induced vision and Vishnu told me that
Lamar Odom will be signing with the Nets within a week.

Hilarious!

I asked Zippy the Pinhead who Lamar would sign for and
he told me (and I quote):

"Now I'm having INSIPID THOUGHTS about the beautiful, round

PLEXIGLASS CARS and being approached by SMALL BOYS

The SUPERIOR Being inhabiting Dallas Raines' Hair,

Why do I feel that agents like David Lee and Jeff Schwartz sit around watching "The Godfather" over and over and over and over again and somehow come to the conclusion that this is an effective means of managing relationships.

"It's nothing personal. It's just business, Jerry."

Give me a break.

"And that's the way it was"

>>>LTLF: the first couple were funny, but I think that ship has sailed.

Oh, no. That ship has not even begun to sail. When Lamar
actually signs and the multiple contradictory reports on espn
and other news services end, then the ship will have sailed.
Until then, there is no shark to jump here. It just gets better and
better.

Oh, by the way, Lamar's standing behind you, could you
ask him where he's going to play next year?

...that's what happens when people get fat-heads.....they think the universe revolves around them....chances are still good that Duade Wade will leave home next summer aren't they??? He threw out the Kobe ultimatum, without all the color, that kobe threw out 2 years ago...."get me a better team"...same selfish demand, difference is that Kobe is polishing 4 rings, and Duade is polishing the ring around his bathtub, in that house with his face on spiderman's body.....now that was funny.

Lamar Odom has decided to go back to Rhode Island and finish out his college basketball. We almost had him...

Lamar Odom has decided to leave basketball and play for the Birmingham Barons enroute to the Chicawga White Sox.

Lamar Odom calls Jerry Buss what?

Andrew B.,

Something was fishy about that 2nd post...you might be right on target.

Don't mention it, we dwell in a suspended state of plagarism here in the Lamar gate subsector of the Matrix.

True, touching post, however in the middle you hoped Lamar finds a deal that is best for him and his family. In my opinion his offers from the Lakers were the best deal. Lamar loves LA, he loves the "show", it won;t fly in OKC.....family man, wouldn't it be best to raise your family in one city which has plenty to offer instead of uprooting them and then having to reeducate them in terms of what is ok and what is not ok.... Do you realize that if you sign with the Lakers and have solid years like you finished with, and that if you guys bring home championships that even a guy like you could be considered to have his jersey hung from the wall. That's only if you drop all the drama and get down and dirty and bring home the rings. Are you a starter or not? Doesn't matter, it's the finisher that counts.

I just saw a roadside sign near San Diego that said that Lamar
has signed with a Tiajuana Jai Alai team

"How can Wade call Miami "home" for Lamar with him only playing one season for them?

Posted by: Ian | July 17, 2009 at 11:27 PM"

apparently Lamar has a home still in Miami...if thats the case, then KG needs to come home, because he probably lives more in Malibu (LA) than the sweet smelling city of Boston.....KG come home, KG come home.....nah....stay where you are...you fit right in with that team of misfits....the Lakers only lost that finals to you because they were so shocked that a team that was so ugly could play some decent ball. I bet Jesus Shuttlesworth (Ray Allen) doesn't even look or talk to Kobe next year, because if he does, Artest wil take one for the team, and knock Allen's baby face and massive 13.5 inch biceps into the year 2014.

>>>Lamar Odom calls Jerry Buss what?

ROTFL

Jon K,

>>>Can we please just hand this blog over to Long Time Laker Fan?

Oh, no. You don't seem to understand. This is a game that
everyone can play. Pretty much every "legitimate" sports reporter
has made their statement about what Lamar is going to do,
YOU SHOULD TOO!!!

And guess what. There's as much factual evidence behind
every one of my posts about Lamar as there was behind most
of the crap being posted by the so-called pundits.

In other news, Antoine Walker was busted in Las Vegas for
bouncing checks for almost a million bucks to a casino.

Lamar will be defending his case in court.

In other news, Yao has decided to have surgery on his foot

Lamar Odom will perform the surgery.

LTLF

i totally agree. not only that but most of the jokes actually reflect the way LO is approaching the game and his career asa BB player

LO you ae making a big mistake like Ariza. According to Nobel Prize winner Al Gore Miami & Houston are going to be under water due to Global warming & hurricanes! If you need help with math: 4 years for $36 million, $9 million/year, is far better than Miami's 5 years for $34 million which is less than $7 million/year! Your agent lacks professionalism. Lakers may have a far better deal signing Big Glen Davis for 5 years at $4million/year via a 3-party trade!

This is a fun game!

I was on Twitter and someone wrote a bunch of letters, some in capital some in lower-case, I printed the page to delve deeper. At first I couldn't make head or tail of it, but when I got drunk and accidently placed my empty glass of scotch over it, the distortion from the light in the glass read Odom/Palin in 2012!

He truly has gone over to the Dark Side of the Force. Or is that the fish?

some of u r making fan of LUUUUUUUUUUUKE and he has his official knock knock joke

Knock Knock!
Who's there?
Luke.
Luke who?
Luke through the keyhole and you'll see...

Let's not forget that it is the sports agents who turned our blue collar sports heroes into the uber rich. Leaving ordinary fans at home watching on TV because of the ridiculously high cost of being there. Not to mention turning those same heroes into whining rich boys we can no longer relate with.

Yes, athletes were taken advantage of and in some cases treated like slaves, Curt Flood, but they have gone way too far. Like the tumbling housing prices which is good for America in the long run, athletes need to come down to earth in mind AND salary.

the sad/funny part of the LO situation is that Lakers fans r involved and obviously it is their concern for their favorite team

the irony is that all the other teams r trying to out-do the Lakers AS 2009 Champs, so i'm sure every basketball fan is watching this charade very closely, especially in clev, bos, orl, SA, Dal, den, port.

and all of them want the Lakers to fail. some are counting already how many days till Artest will be in Jail?! whowww (from reading various blogs)

Long Time Laker Fan,

I actually just saw Shaq crying on my lucky barstool, sobbing with a mouth full of chicken wings.

He told me that Lamar has dedicated his life to converting the world to the one true religion of lacrosse. He now only refers to basketball as the "anti-lacrosse" and has declared a jihad against it.

Shaq is, as a result, experiencing an existential crisis of faith... and he has gout.

Any word yet?

3 years, 30 million. I can't believe Lamar turned that down.

And Lamar, you can't just hold out right smack during the start of free agency unless your real goal IS going to the highest bidder, because championship teams have more at stake than one player and can’t wait around for one guy to make up his mind. Look at Artest. He’s smart.

Bad move Lamar.

Wes

>>>>Odom/Palin in 2012!

LOL

Let me try......

Reports are in that Ms Grace has spoken to Odom, they will trademark dodm bald head to begin their new advertisement for their product " Lamar Odom "champolate Milk dud..." only for 3.00 dollars because they're trying to avoid common cents.

Hey it took me 4 minutes!

"Yes, athletes were taken advantage of and in some cases treated like slaves, Curt Flood, but they have gone way too far."

I blame Michael Jordan.

I don't remember things being this screwed up before Jordan.

Jordan ruined everything. He ruined basketball. He ruined professional athletes' attitude. He ruined sponsorship.

Before Jordan, people followed teams.

After Jordan, people followed athletes on their fantasy teams.

It sucks.

GO LAKERS!!!!!

I asked my Magic 8-Ball (tm) whether Lamar would be playing
for Toronto next season, and it said "oui"

(did I mention that I bought my Magic 8-Ball (tm) in Canada?)

Hey AK -

Tell LO to dump Schwartz and sign with CAA!!! (I work there, not as an agent). I'd say the same thing about Trev if it wasn't already too late...

Lakers better take a close look at the Celtics, they are building for one more run, with Rasheed and now todays signing of Antonio Daniels, we better sign Lamar, and add a bench player for depth. Sasha and Luke provide nothing.

Actually having the LO situation to ponder makes this time of year less boring for me. If LO was already signed the Lakers would be locked and loaded with no interesting twists or options left to discuss.
If I were LO’s agent I would suggest the following approach to try to satisfy both the lakers and the need to feel special and wanted that all athletes (at least when they’re being honest about it) have. The Lakers have reportedly offered up to 10 million per for a three year period. That’s the correct ego dollar amount for the negotiation with Lamar, but not long enough to satisfy his insecurity about where and how his career will end. I would suggest that both sides consider a contract going five years starting at 12mil the first year and going down 2mil each year thereafter, so 12m, 10m, 8m, 6m, 4m a total of 40mil over a five year contract. The first year at first glance seems like a tough one for the Lakers to swallow, but take into account that Morrison will be traded to one of the remaining under the cap teams as soon as his contract is past the halfway point of the year (at that point for luxury tax reasons if we include up to three million in cash and a 2nd round pick the receiving team makes a few hundred thousand in profit on the deal but the Lakers will save approx. 3mil.) Now I know the Lakers were hoping to just reap the savings on Morrison’s contract themselves, but by using it as an offet for LO’s initial 12 million they put themselves in a much better position in the out years of the contract and each subsequent year the Laker’s are in a better cap and trade positon vis a vis Lamar.
See if we didn’t have Lamar to talk about there would be nothing to chat about except meaningless summer league games.

well, more posts from another (ok, the same) idiots getting mad at Lamar for actually making decisions that 1)we generally agree that people have a right to make for themselves, this being a free country and all and 2)things he hasn't even done, or won't do.

Max Von Sydow revealed to Beng Ekerot under the seal of confession, unaware that he was in fact death, that Lamar has in fact, actually resigned with the Lakers for twelve dollars and fifty cents and a 27% share in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Yeah, these are are kind of too easy.

Sorry, just a plug, 'the seventh seal' just came out on blu ray. bomb ass, and a movie about an entire world of uninformed hysterics preparing for the end days sort of seems appropriate right now. Also a movie about a bunch of random dysfunctional children being jerked around by a crazy man with delusions of grandeur. nah, maybe not that last one.

and technically, I am calling people hysterics for believing that Lamar is about to, or has already, signed with another team. I think it is quite rational to believe that we might be &^%#$ed next season if we can't resign him. We can't afford to sign another decent alternative at PF, ron artest can't defend paul pierce, r lewis, or LBJ if he's playing PF. Andrew Bynum hasn't played a full season yet. But we'll see.

oh, and apologies for going off topic, but the eastern conference playoffs are looking to be brutal next season. I'm looking forward to it.

If Odom signs for more Money than the Lakers offered, or for the Lakers best offer we can say his agent did a good job for his client. If LO does not sign with the Lakers for similar money that would make LO a lieing sack. Either way, I lost some respect for LO when he waited too long to call Jerry Buss. Bad business, immature, disrespectful.

Either way, this to me is a a guy that won a ring and lost himself in his headlines. Not a new story that often comes with success, just another pathetic air head.

I wish the Lakers had an option, I feel that Odom now doesn't deserve this much money.

If LO is a Laker, yes he will help, but he is what he is, a high quality bench player with the soul of a Snickers bar.

I'm sorry Andrew Z, but I don't feel like backing off my current distaste for Mr. Odom. Look at the Celtics and Spurs and Pistons and Mavs--all these teams are adding to their rosters, building for next year and we're sitting around waiting for Lamar.

It's high time to sign or move on, and if we move on, we are no longer the favorites for next year. And if this is the case, my anger is making a bee line straight to Lamar.

Wes

LO. Fire your agent. Buss is offerring $36 Mil for 4 years. Off the bench. Going to Miami or whomever, 5 years to take less cash for a non-contender is dumb. Fire your agent.
Rings and cash is what your getting in LA.

>

First, it was Marquis Daniels, not Antonio. Second, who cares? This guy is a worthless aquisition who will contribute next to nothing for the celtics.

Lamar, let me be your agent!

I'd say take the three year deal @ 27 mil with the Lakers. After that, you will easily command at least $5 mil Veterans Minimum per. The Lakers will have it then. they just don't want to commit to that now. You will certainly make the Lakers contenders for years to come, therefore earning the Franchise extra millions on Final's revenue alone.

THAT'S $37 MILLION OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS RIGHT THERE!

If you sign Miami's contract, you will be playing for $3 mil per year for your final 2 seasons. You are better than tat Lamar!

Come on man. I'll be you agent for free, just come back to the Lakers!

warren

First, it was Marquis Daniels, not Antonio. Second, who cares? This guy is a worthless aquisition who will contribute next to nothing for the celtics.

I love posts like this. Reminds me of the 'Paul Pierce and rondo suck" posts.

Hmmm.

Wes

Tony Gaffney and Chinemelu Elonu are getting invites to training camp. (via FB&G)

How about a sign and trade with the Knicks for David Lee?

I was just in the bathroom, and someone wrote on the bathroom
wall that Lamar would be playing for Sacramento next season.

I was sitting out in the back yard when an ant came up to me
and communicated to me via pheremones that Lamar will be
signing with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.

This is the second report that he's playing there, so it must be
true.

have the fort wayne mad ants ever played the UC santa cruz banana slugs?

Laker Tom - just wanted to say that I've been enjoying your "plan B" posts. It makes me think about the depth of the team, and the old adage that for every door that closes, another opens. If Ammo's summer success leads to playing time during the season, it will add to the glut at the 3 which could in turn to some small ball minutes at the 4 for other players (obviously Artest and also Luke). It's not my favorite way to go as I'm a big advocate of length, but for $54 mil I could live with it.

I just read that Miami finally gave Lamar an official 5 year 35 million deal. This same source thinks the Lakers offered a 4 year 36 million deal. I gave up trying to tell which rumors are true which are false.

Lets see which one Lamar likes better. This should be the NBA's new IQ test.

Wes

I just read that TWO NBA franchises in California are on the Endangered species list (The Clips and Sacto). This was on the front page of MSN.com.

Come on guys, I say that if it was simple and graceful to sign Lamar, then we would. Going beyond that is just dumb. Jerry Buss isn't dumb. In this economy, there isn't as much room for error.

I'm ok with not dominating everyone next year. I'm ok with being a good team with alot of drama. I REALLY think that we can make this season alot of fun without Lamar. Yes, with Lamar we demolish everyone, but do we HAVE to have that? I dunno.

Kobe is in his prime and we should do what we can to assure him a chance at a repeat (threepeat?). But at what price? Do any of you really think that we won't do something else sooner or later that makes us GREAT?:??!!!

Let's imagine the future for a minute. The economy continues to stink for another year or two (more likely two). Many NBA teams are losing money and are desperate to dump salaries. Even if we get Lamar, other teams will be able to make moves to upgrade to our level!!! As long as they are NOT locked into long term and ugly contracts.

Here is my point. We are a GOOD team. We should simply wait until another team panics and wants to move someone of quality. THEN, we are positioned to strengthen our team in the short term AND the long term.

Buss is smart. I am pulling for him not to cave into Lamars wishes for a 5 year 40mil contract (or anything else that doesn't serve our interests). I say wait it out like we did with Kwame until a team shows up that HAS to do something. THEN, the Lakers pull the trigger and find another gold nugget.

Hell, that's how we ended up with Magic, Worthy and Kobe isn't it?

The world is our oyster. All it will take is a little time and patience. Our summer will SUCK in the mean time... but what the hell, us posters like to worry and complain. LOL

sounds to me like Odom wants 12 mil a year.

Really, are you people Laker fans or not? It's very simple:

With LO, the Lakers were +17.8 per 48 min this season, without him they were -6.1.

How difficult is that to understand? (see my previous posts for the link and the math).

As a professional baller there is nothing more important than winning a championship! Lamar, Miami is not gonna get you anywhere! stay in LA where repeat will happen and is a lot easier to make some money off court! with the frontcourt of you, pau, and andrew along with kobe n ron ron, man i hope you stay!!

Mr Squid,
There is no doubt that Lamar is a high quality player. My only beef is that Lamar wants over and above what makes sense for the Lakers to do.

We have offered him 3 years at 9 mil, we have even offered him 8 mil at 32 mil. We have done our part. All I am saying is that there comes a time when Mr Buss has to do what is the best for the team short term AND long term.

Our HUGE investment is in Bynum. Basically, if Bynum doesn't become "The Man" soon, the Lakers are toast. Lamar covered us while Bynum was learning on the job. Bynum fouls out, the Lakers play Lamar and Gasol. Bynum injured? The lakers play Lamar and Gasol.

We are at the point where it is make or break with Bynum NOW. Signing Lamar ensures that Bynum can continue to mature and to learn. But now Bynum is making BIG MONEY. While before he was at minimum levels.

If we sign Lamar, it gives Bynum another year or two to grow into the beast we think he is. But Lamar wants FIVE YEARS, not a year or two. That is a huge inconsistancy.

I say we roll the dice with the kid and put some pressure on him to come up big. Bynum just MAY surprise us and show that he is ready for the call.

Hey, can't we send a doctored tape of Adam Morrison in summer league to Riley and get him to go after Ammo instaed of Lam-O?

mr squid,
You are exaggerating his importance by cherry-picking the stats. Without Odom, the Lakers would still have been a playoff team, probably not a WCF team, but certainly not in the "thunder" realm. You are also ignoring the improvement of Artest and a healthy Bynum. Mortgaging the future to make an excellent team exceptional is not a smart move.

dave,
"As a professional baller there is nothing more important than winning a championship! "

I think you're projecting. That is what we as fans would like, but very few players actually feel that way. If they did, they would be keeping in shape, improving their games, not partying, and trying harder to get on the "good" teams, even if it meant reduced salaries.

Johnny V,

"Here is my point. We are a GOOD team. We should simply wait until another team panics and wants to move someone of quality. THEN, we are positioned to strengthen our team in the short term AND the long term. "

I agree, especially in this economy. And there's precedent for it, too. We didn't panic and try to placate Kobe 2 years ago. We were patient and it paid off (Gasol).

JohnnyV--thanks for the MSN mention. Interesting read, especially about the Jaguars as candidates for LA. The mention of Lakers as "division rivals" of the Clippers was funny, though technically true.

Don't have much to add to this LO business, except to say the Lakers should offer a 5 year deal that matches Miami's, adjusted for taxes, if the extra year means that much to LO. The Lakers are built to win now, so I'm on the side of bringing him back if feasible. Unlike Ariza, there's no good alternative.

If Portland ups the price, then LO walks. It hurts the Lakers, but a pricey long-term contract would hurt them more.

For some numbers "lovers". No such thing as 5Mil veterans minimum. I believe it's between 1.5-17M? LTLF can get you exact number. 5M it's close to MLE - mid level exception

LTLF, You are the MAN! Your posts are by far the most informative and interesting of anyone of us here.

Shout out to Laker Tom, and Kobe VBlitz too. I LOVE YOU GUYS. Sometimes when you post I feel like, hell, they are posting the same thing I would!

Yellow fever, you too are coming around. I hated your Louuuuke Posts, but I can see you LOVE our Lakers as I do. And John K..... HA!. Forget about it. That guy LOVES our Lakers and I love him for his enthusiasm and good will.

But this post is for LTLF. Dude, you da man, but DANG, are you you drinking today? LOL! If so, that's cool! Enjoy! But come on, these posts today are WAAAY below your very high and second to none standards!

ex - I agree with your post about not mortgaging the team. I was an advocate of bringing Lamar back until the numbers started jacking up. At this point, I'm starting to think more about other players filling the gap, getting opportunities that they might not have enjoyed otherwise.

dave m (not dave, DaveW or any other d's)

p.s. - might be time to resume horse, the Odom watch is getting stale.

I was dropping acid in my hot-air ballon over the coast of Florianopolis with my 19 year old supermodel siamese twin girl friend and had a surreal vision that Dr. B and LO are the same person and will be with the Lakers for years to come...

Lamar isn't really that important to the Lakers IMHO. Not with Pau and Kobe both being in their prime, and the chance for Andrew to improve a lot. And then there is Ron-Ron also in his prime. THREE dominant, in their own way, NBA players in their prime and one potential dominant up and coming player.

No Odom opens up playing time for Luke and Adam. Adam has the potential to really spread out the floor, like Hedo or Rashard if he comes back strong. Luke is a better passer than Lamar and really helps run the entire offense better than Lamar. He is capable of being a 'point-forward' letthing Shannon Brown shoot and cut and drible drive if they are on the floor at the same time.

Yeah we lose some height and wing span with Lamar gone but I may have Laker colored glasses on but I still peg us for sure as the best team. Remember no one even knows if Shaq and LeBron will work or Jefferson or Rasheed. We already know our pieces will work and Ron-Ron should fit right in.

For the role Lamar will play if he comes back he is getting more than handsomly rewarded. If that reward, and the city of Los Angeles, and his teammates, and winning are not enough, so be it. We will be fine either way.

Hey AK and BK I just thought of something. Anyway for you guys to post in a blog entry when Laker summer league games are going to be on NBA TV? I found one this Wednesday I believe at 5PM PST but I never know for sure when or if they are going to be broadcast. If you could put it in an entry the day before or the day of the broadcast that would be helpful.

Or some link where we could find the info.

Larry of LA-

It's a great idea (we actually posted the sked earlier, but could have done it a coupl emore times)... but it'll have to wait until next season since the Lakers are done with summer league play :)

BK

bobo,

"I was dropping acid in my hot-air ballon over the coast of Florianopolis with my 19 year old supermodel siamese twin girl friend and had a surreal vision that Dr. B and LO are the same person and will be with the Lakers for years to come..."

priceless ... u've inspired me 2 start clowning these haters instead of trying shame them into reasoning ...

Lamar Odom maintains a home in Miami. He and Wade are friends. Miami can't offer as much money as the Lakers and we Heat Fans put the "Lamar to Miami" talk in the "too good to be true" category. If it happens, I'll be really surprised.

dave,

>>> Laker Tom - just wanted to say that I've been enjoying your "plan B" posts.
>>> It makes me think about the depth of the team, and the old adage that for
>>> every door that closes, another opens. If Ammo's summer success leads
>>> to playing time during the season, it will add to the glut at the 3 which could

>>> but for $54 mil I could live with it.

Good to hear from you. Oddly, the process of writing that post has almost led me to think it might really be better for the Lakers and for Lamar to part ways. And Plan B – or as I also call it Plan Bynum – is why both the Lakers and Odom may be thinking this too. Basically, if Bynum stays healthy and plays at the level he was playing before getting hurt, there is no way that the minutes for Lamar are NOT going to go down.

Right now, the Lakers front court rotation has been for Drew, Pau, and Lamar to share the 96 MPG at power forward and center. Because he plays both positions, Pau is still going to play 40 MPG. Add in 35 MPG for a healthy, dominating Drew, and that leaves only 21 MPG for Lamar. Not starting is something Lamar could swallow but not playing starter minutes and not being on the floor at the end of the game might not be. I would not blame Lamar for not wanting to come back to the Lakers as their fifth wheel.

From the Lakers point of view, no way do they want to play Lamar $27M for 21 MPG, especially when a fourth of those minutes could easily be covered by Ron Artest, their new small forward who can matchup well against some power forwards. And frankly, if I were Jerry Buss, I probably wouldn’t spend $54M in salary and taxes to re-sign Lamar. Just maybe, the best thing might be for Lamar and the Lakers to part ways, primarily because this season really hinges on Andrew Bynum, who could become a beast with the opportunity, minutes, and touches he would get with Lamar Odom gone.

As for Ammo, he may be the best 12th man on any squad in the NBA today. That is how deep the Lakers are. And as for Lamar, I will be happy with whatever the Lakers decide to do because I think it is a WIN-WIN situation for us.

Tom

LarryOFLa,

"Yeah we lose some height and wing span with Lamar gone but I may have Laker colored glasses on but I still peg us for sure as the best team. "

And I think most folks that know basketball will realise that ... maybe not for sure, but we're arguably the best ... same as we've got arguably the best player in basketball ... but i get what u mean, as a purple and gold fan there is no argument

Anywho like many have said, having Lamar makes it that much more guranteed. At least on paper, similar to how you'd say 5billion is great but 7billion dollars is better (even though in reality it might be that after six billion everyone starts getting greedy n fighting, silly analogy, but u get d drift)

I'm all for Odom coming back at w/e price ... be it 4 million or 10 million ... but if we lose him, I'll still be expecting a championship ring next season

johnnyv,

"Let's imagine the future for a minute. The economy continues to stink for another year or two (more likely two). Many NBA teams are losing money and are desperate to dump salaries. Even if we get Lamar, other teams will be able to make moves to upgrade to our level!!! As long as they are NOT locked into long term and ugly contracts. "

hmm nice argument ... but then if Buss offers say an 8mil per year offer we're still kinda locked in ... and at 3 years we're still kinda locked in ... yea yea ... it's still less ... but i'm just saying u should be arguing for Odom not to be signed at all ... then we'd really get the savings and put oursleves in a better position to strike ... but if that's what you're arguing for then the odds are against u cuz the chances Odom stays are higher than the chances he leaves

lol ... sigh ... ain't sure how i feel about the whole Odom thingy anymore ... besides let it just end soon so i can start neurosing over other crap

KB Blitz,

Pig Miller's lineup did not include
D-Fish. Therefore, I put LO in at the
point-forward, because ... Where else
would you put him?

The Lakers have *CLEARLY* shown
that they don't consider LO the SF
going forward. First Ariza. Now Artest.
Moving Kobe from SG to PG makes
no sense and essentially does nothing.
The offense runs thru him anyway.
[ ref. the ~7.4 assists avg for the finals. ]

re: Channeling my inner Mark Jackson.
I understand that you think he's an idiot.
The interesting thing is that if you spoke
to him, he'd probably feel the same way
about you. To be more clear, if I had
to choose someone who knew
basketball, I'm going to go with the
former professional & future HOFer
vs. some antagonistic blogger who
doesn't know biology & who's been
proven wrong on this subject multiple
times. [ yes, you've gotten some things
right too. ]

BTW, thank you for equating my
basketball knowledge/instincts with
a former professional athlete & future
HOFer. Asides from your wife, when
she's looking for gifts, does anybody
equate your basketball acumen with
HOF personnel?

LarryofLA;

Thanks you for your views, and I know they're sincere and well put, but I just couldn't disagree with you more. Lamar is a versatile 6'10" big man off the bench averaging double-doubles of around 16-17/10, who can handle the ball, play all five positions, is a good defender and is right or left handed making for a very valuable cog in the machine.

You simply do not let that kind of talent escape without a considerable fight, and unless it is just a case of Jerry Buss not being able to afford it due to the faltering economy and luxury tax implications, I'm extremely disappointed in the Lakers withdrawing their offer so quickly and appear to have given up so easily in trying to lock him up.

In a related story, it's been announced that if LO leaves the Lakers, the front office have their eyes set on 6'5" RuPaul.

phred,

"well, more posts from another (ok, the same) idiots getting mad at Lamar for actually making decisions that 1)we generally agree that people have a right to make for themselves, this being a free country and all and 2)things he hasn't even done, or won't do. "

I salute u ... and the irony of it is when u try to reason with folks like these ... they go, it's a free world i'm entitled to my opinion ... yet lamar is a treacherous fool for having his ... they fail to see the class in just going thank you and good bye

Johnny V - great posts!!

> Our HUGE investment is in Bynum. Basically, if Bynum

Doesn't being "The Man" mean being your number 1 option? With Kobe and Gasol on the team, Bynum is the now the 3. I'd say that probably holds true in 09, 10 and maybe ever 2011. I guess at some point Bynum becomes the 2nd option after Kobe. However, not sure when he becomes the 1st option.

Agree with what you said, though - it is time to throw Bynum a bigger role now that he is standing next to a massive pile of skril, yo. Play big minutes. Be "The Man(ish)". If he does, entire dynamic changes - it's a new team, a new era.
