Round-the-Clock Purple and Gold

« Previous Post | Lakers Now Home | Next Post »

The Lakers hate their moms, Laker fans' moms and everyone else's moms!

I'm not often one who jumps to conclusions, but how else can you explain the Lake Show's performance this afternoon, aBench watch Mother's Day crapfest that ended in a 99-87 Game 4 loss to the Houston Rockets?  I'm sorry, but nobody prioritizing homage to the lovely women raising children worldwide would have come out as flat and disorganized as the Lakers did, much less stayed that way.

From the opening tip, the purple and gold were not only off their game, they flailed in every single aspect of it.  Take the disastrous first quarter, one that ultimately laid the foundation for an unsuccessful effort.

  • Three and a half minutes passed before getting on the board with a Kobe Bryant 18-footer, which put L.A. seven points behind Houston's pace.  Nearly another three and a half minutes in the books, and we're sitting on seven total points, all courtesy of The Mamba.  Moreover, the Lakers worked in a style most folks wouldn't label "advantageous."  Way too little ball movement or attacks of a middle left vulnerable in Yao Ming's absence.  Way too many arc-bound dribbles, quick J's, sloppy passes (when the ball did actually change hands) and generally flawed execution.
  • In the meantime, the oft-offensively challenged Rockets notched 22 points during this same time period.  The issue wasn't just Houston hitting shots (although that obviously created a problem).  It was the Lakers apparently feeling indebted for Houston providing place to play, because they looked dead set on doing the hosts as many favors as possible.  Thus, those same seven minutes produced seven Rockets points off turnovers.  Over the entire quarter, the Rockets also scored seven points on possessions converted immediately upon a Laker miss.  And considering how few shots the Lakers launched from within ten feet (a mere quartet), that only accentuated how the reluctance to play towards strengths bit the Lakers in the hindquarters.
  • It wouldn't be fair to harp on the players without mentioning Phil Jackson's role in thisSasha Phil mess.  I've often said the "PJ refuses to call timeouts in lieu of letting players figure it out while he kicks back and does nothing" criticisms can be ridiculous.  You can't call time out EVERY time an opponent goes on a run- as fans would seemingly expect- and more often than not, we've seen these Lakers overcome stumbles.  And such achievements contain value.

But with Phil's technique comes judgment.  This quarter was ridiculously botched on both sides of the ball, and the Lakers were getting lapped unusually fast.  With struggles as extreme as I've seen all season, even I was jawdropped at Phil waiting until the 2:30 mark to call a time out.  In my mind, big mistake, and one that certainly figured into a win falling out of reach.

Jordan Farmar hangs his head From there, a lot more of the same.

To put it mildly, the Lakers spent this contest way the hell outta sync.  With 5:40 left in the game, I happened to take a gander at the box score and noticed the Lakers was working on an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1:1.  Ten assists.  Ten turnovers.  That's straight up horrendous, a far cry from what we've come to expect from a Laker team that's made such profitable hay moving the ball around.

Failing to execute not only stymied the offense, but the D as well.  Those bad, often impatient shots put the Lakers on their heels in transition, where the lockdown effort is typically weakest.  Even when points weren't surrendered on those possessions, various Lakers picked up fouls as a result.  I've said it before and I'll say it again.  This team's defense is largely dictated by their offense, and when shortcuts are taken with the latter, the former typically goes to pot with the bathwater.  (Although make no mistake, when the Lakers defended from a set formation, they weren't always so hot, either.)

If there is a positive to be taken away from this loss, it's that pinning blame on any one player would be disingenuous.  Save perhaps Shannon Brown, you're looking at a cavalcade of Lakers dropping the ball.  Or at the very least, not until the fourth quarter mini-push, when Pau Gasol notched eighteen of this thirty points.  Granted, some fault for just a dozen coming previous is due to teammates not eying him enough, but Gasol also missed five free throws and that same lack of focus at the stripe may have contributed to an undersized Houston winning the rebound battle 43-37 and snatching eleven offensive boards.  It's obviously not all Pau's fault, but undoubtedly, when your seven foot center plays thirty-eight minutes, some of that onus must fall on his shoulders.

On down the line, it's a laundry list of Lakers failing to answer the bell.  Trevor Ariza turned the ball over Kobe and Shane Battier battle three times in one quarter.  Luke Walton tied Ariza's mark during the second quarter, then added another for good measure.  Sasha Vujacic's shot remains unreliable.  Jordan Farmar came back down to earth after Game 3's playoff resuscitation.  Ditto Andrew Bynum, who also showed signs of life during that contest.  Time off serving a suspension resulted in zero step pep for Derek Fisher, outscored 34-2 by Aaron Brooks and notching a team-worst +/- of negative twenty-six in under twenty minutes of run.  It would be a vast understatement to say Fish brought little to the table.

And Kobe may have gotten off to a hot start with nine first quarter points, but that also represented his day's high point, as he finished the day with fifteen.  Shane Battier did a considerably better job guarding Bryant than the other way around and 24's "center field" style continually left the Dukie wide open behind the arc.

As for Lamar Odom, his sub-par performance turned quite literally painful after he landed hard on his back while driving the lane and colliding with Shane Battier.  That he drew an offensive foul on the sequence added insult to an injury that prevented more run.  It's unknown as of yet whether he'll be available for Tuesday's Game 5.

Cock of the walk So that's what went wrong, which begs the natural follow up... Why?

Was this a matter of underestimating an already less talented opponent down their best player?  Overconfidence?  Underestimating the fight Houston had left in them?

The K Brothers won't travel with the team until the Finals- knock on wood- so I can't talk intelligently about how cocky the vibe was or wasn't before tip off.  I'd like to think the patient didn't die from an overdose of "We got this."  After all, this Rockets squad has made it perfectly clear that backing down or packing it in ain't part of the agenda.   Undermanned or over-matched, everything will be left on the floor, which renders cakewalk expectations pretty much ridiculous.  If this lackluster production came courtesy of phoning it in, then the entire roster deserves a slap in the face beyond simply the metaphorical one provided by this loss.  Honestly, that's just inexcusable.

In any event, if there's anything the trio of postseason losses have made crystal clear, it's the following. When the Lakers play their brand of basketball, one that features a flurry of passes, movement off ball and smart shot selection to complement energetic team/help-oriented defense, they're pretty much unbeatable.  When they stray from the program, however, chinks in the armor grow glaringly exposed.  I don't doubt this team's talent and ability are up to snuff for a title chase.  But I do sometimes question their ability to display common sense over 48 minutes.  They often make life much harder than need be, and like this afternoon, they sometimes pay a price.

The sky is not falling. Put the first 4 games behind us. It is now a best of 3 series with the Lakers having the homecourt advantage. Move on...

The most dissapointing aspect of this affair is not the loss, not even the way we lost (which was in an of itself damning) but the sheer lack of accounatbility afterwards.

Phil talked about how we accomplished what we set out to do by regaining home court advantage and Fisher according to Simers "would agree only that the Lakers got off to a slow start, and would not agree that it was an embarrassing performance" Even his head coach would not acknowledge that it was an embarrassing performance. C'mon! Makes one wonder if this shellacking was not embarrasing, how much worse it would have to get for those asscociated with this game (players and coaches alike) to agree that this label was accurate.

After Game 3 in the Utah series Derek made his pledge that the Lakers would not give back another big lead. Of course to make good on that promise requires a lead to give up.

Bottom line is that I expected Phil and company to be honest about the fact that we laid an egg. I did not expect the sanitized PC version (expletive nothwithstanding) that was offered instead. It is one thing to mail it in but at least own it. And this is the most troubling aspect of the Lakers...this tendency to all to often become lackadaisical about the opponent and/or the effort required to win. It is the playoffs after all.

As for the undermanned opponent...It is hardly a surprise that the Rockets turned in such an emotional "win one for the Gippper" or in this case Yao performance. I respect the heart with which they played for the entire game. They played extremely well. But despite these concerns I still expect the Lakers to advance through this and the next round to the finals. And if they get there I like their odds of winning this year.

Yet if they continue to leave their heart at the door, Houston or the next team they face, will happily show them it.

Lakers disgraced a proud uniform in Sunday's game. They should be ashamed of that performance. It showed a lack of respect for the opponent, the fans, and the game. I thought nothing could be worse than the way the Finals ended last year. But this was... well, worse than awful. They laid down like dogs.

I don't know it is not the loss you can lose, it is the VIBE a team in a playoffs game come not ready to play and it is not the first time JUST MAKE YOU WONDER IS THIS TEAM A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM? IT SEEMS PHIL IS LOSING THEM A LLITLE BIT MAYBEE HE LOST IS TUCH! OR MAYBE THEY THINK SOME ONE IS GOING TO GIVE IT TO THEM one more think they need to play smart again in side out ball stop with the jump shot happy mentality i just hope this is the last set back.

It's not the players. It's the coach.

Bad coach and bad coaching!

He doesn't know when to call timeout; doesn't know to keep the better player in the court; doesn't know to adjust the game plan to the situation; doesn't know when to tell Kobe stop playing individual game; doesn't know how to moltivate players; doesn't know how to use MBenga, Sasha, Power, Brown, Andrew.

He's just a louzy coach dating the boss's daughter with a windfall of 12 millions a year.

This Lakers organization is going down into the drain.

AK/BK..

Hope you could share this quote to the LAKERS Team..

”Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.”
- Michael Jordan

------------------------------oOo-------------------------------

We do have talent, no doubt...I don't know with teamwork and intelligence...

my blood pressure is bad.

the lakers have taken on the personality of their team leader. in this case, it is kobe bryant. kobe doesn't try hard on defense so his team doesn't try hard. kobe makes bad decisions on offense so his team does the same.

as a fan of the laker ORGANIZATION, most of this team doesn't deserve to wear the purple an gold. i'm ok with losing and even losing this series but i'm not ok with going out without showing any heart or pride.

watching the nuggets, cavs and even celtics play this post season, i couldn't help but feel a little jealous at how hard those teams play. if we make it past houston, prepare for more beatdowns like today from denver but possibly worse (remember how they did the hornets..).

Lets get one thing straight. Lakers didn't lose, as all these articles seem to indicate. Rockets won. Rockets took it. If the Lakers didn't show heart or passion it was because the Rockets took it away from them. Dumb media types who keep writing as though whether LA wins or loses is determined by whether LA shows up with passion or not, are off-base. You can show up with passion and just get beat. That's what happened. Lakers didn't beat themselves. Rockets beat them.
Now it's 2-2 ---a situation NOONE predicted. Rockets have absolutely nothing to lose. Lakers are under extreme pressure because if they lose to a Mcgrady-less, Yao-less, Rockets, it will be one of the most embarrassing defeats in history. I like our chances. And boy is it fun to ruin the nations' assumption that it was an evitable Kobe/ Lebron final. I love being the spoiler the coastal media wrote off. I don't care if the rest of the nation doesn't care if rockets end up in the finals. Being the spoiler has its own rewards.
Lakers are still the Koby-ites. No team exists. Rockets play as a team.

I think PJ is just setting it up so he can retire by the end of this season. PJ is just tired, so let him play his zen mindtricks in psyching out this players because he's already thought about sitting back in a chair on his Montana ranch. Besides, he realized that going up against LBJ would be embarrasing because there is no way Kobe can lead this team against the Cavs and win. Moreover, Kobe really just doesn't have leadership quality. He has been and will always be an individual player, good at it, but just not a true leader. He has made some progress in being more accommodating, but the guy is a loner who really could not care less about the people that surround him. It's sad that this is what the Lakers' players give their fans, but then again the fans parallel the Lakers by providing a lackluster support even when this team plays at home. It's like, "for every action, there's an equal but opposite reaction". It was a nice run Lakers and thanks for the 65 wins. It's nice to know that you came in second again in games won, but this time will fall actually short of even making it to the finals.

Critical Beatdown,

Word brother.

Are we the poorest coached team, dumb, or just lazy?

We can't block out on defense
We can't pass
We can't dribble
We can't execute the offense
We can't defend the pick and roll
We can't defend the 3 point line
We can't call a time-out
We can't take advantage of our Size
We can't stop a quick point guard

I have to admit I'm a die-hard Lakers fan. After this loss though, I just can't stomach supporting a team who doesn't care about it's fans..... I HOPE YOU LOSE ALL YOUR GAMES IN THIS SERIES...YOU MORONS DON"T DESERVE TO MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ROUND....

Hey Laker Fans,

You probably lost because your huge, arrogant egos are weighing your down. Try showing our Rockets, indeed the rest of the league, some respect for a change, okay?

RUDY,

"This present line-up has no PRIDE at all, they are an EMBARRASSMENT to mankind. Even if they go on and win this series and go on and win the championship (which I doubt) I will never be proud of this PRESENT LAKERS."

I hear you yo ... tough loss and it hurts to see purple and gold not show up to compete ... but it's the playoffs dawg, the team with the best winning percentage doesn't win (e.g. we had a better % than celtics in last years playoff) ... it's first to 16 wins yo

A championship is what this team will be measured by ... and until that ship has sailed, I stand behind our team and whilst I'm not proud of last night's game ... I'm definitely proud of what this team has achieved so far

24 + 16 + [1]7 = The Purple Tinted Golden Age

quote: This loss really hurt me as a Laker fan. Again the Rockets suck. Even with Yao. The Lakers are so much better than ALL these teams that I cant understand how you cant come excited and ready to play every nite.

oh we suck? really?

that right there is the problem my friend. LA you are in denial.

As mentioned before this started, you have totally underestimated our bench. Er..our starters. lol.

the heart of a champion. The LA team doesn't HAVE it.

yeah those were skid marks, not tan burns on your butts.

oh yeah ...come to think of .......again...how 'bout that sweep?.....

YOU EVER NOTICE I THINK I MAY OWE YOU AN APOLOGY. CHECK ROLL CALL TOMORROW FOR A
VERY DIFFERENT MAMBA24 REACTION TO THE LAKERS
AND PHIL JACKSON.
LARRY(mAMBA24)

Let's review: this is a team that has the most talent in the NBA, what should be the deepest bench in the NBA, the single best player in the NBA, is supposedly on a mission after getting embarrassed and humiliated while showing no heart in the 2008 finals. So what do they do? They get embarrassed and humiliated by, of all teams, the Rockets. They are way better than the Rockets at full strength, much less without 2 starters. I can accept a loss, but that was an utterly putrid display by every player. How embarrassing. We've all watched this team all season give up huge leads to greatly inferior teams and let inferior teams like the Jazz and the Rockets hang around in what should be sweeps. Then, last night, they just role over and die. This bunch of Lakers is like the kid on your high school team who was bigger than everyone else and therefore didn't have to work very hard to win on the court or on the field. Our 2008-09 Lakers are lazy underachievers. I really hate to say this, but I just don't think this is a championship team. They have the talent to be GREAT, but without heart or a championship mentality, they aren't going to win. This Rockets series should have been a sweep. The Lakers might get out of this round (god, I hope so), but someone is going to knock them out, I'm afaid. That's what happens when you don't have any heart.

It is highly understandable the level of frustration today, after yesterday´s pathetic effort. No fan no matter how loyal they are can take what happened and be untouched by it. And that´s OK.

But one thing I think is the real problem here is perception: the Lakers went from being an average team, a 7th, 8th seed to the NBA finals in months. That´s too fast.

It is not every year that your team has the chance to be champions, it takes luck, personnel, effort to be a champion. Maybe last year was our year and we blew it.Remember Detroit:they won the finals in the first time they had a real chance in 2004 and tried for 5 years to repeat only to be denied, until they finally blew up the team.

Last year was too fast, and that gave us the wrong perception that we are unbeatable, that one more year of Gasol, one more year of Bynum, one more year of Ariza would make us champions, but that is not how it works.

Last year´s finals was a much more bigger deal than people think, that whole thing that we are only getting better, next year is ours, etc is not truth in the Nba: the Pistons in 1989 are the last team to win one year after losing in the finals, and they were much closer in 88 than we in 2008.

It is time for us Lakers fans to face the truth:this team, no matter how good Gasol is,Bynum or Odom are, is KOBE, and Kobe is not the same player anymore. He is still exceptional, but not as athletic as he once were.Fisher is almost finished. And those are our last link to the threepeat team. All the others players have not won anything, and it shows.Phil has 9 rings, but how hungry is he for another one?

If you realize, all the great players of Kobe generation are starting to break down:Garnett,Duncan,Iverson. They are not what they were 5 years ago, and Kobe is no different.

Bottom line:we can win this thing but let´s see things the way they really are:it is gonna be really really difficult to do it, and it is not always that we can say there is always next year. Our franchise player is getting old and the time for winning is right now and maybe, just maybe it has already passed.

"Love the way the refs were supporting the houston muppets today....thats the only way they win...with the refs on their side..."
SERIOUSLY?!?! you get blown out in a game you needed to put your foot on our throats and its the refs fault? most of the comments here are from intelligent laker fans but blaming the refs after you get WORKED is ridiculous. Btw...what the heck kinda name is a houston muppet...come on faker fans...you can do better than that

nothing better than to see a 5'10 lil' guy slap the fakers around much like the celtics did last year...are you kidding me...outstanding

the fakers are nowhere near as good as you've been led to believe...

GO ROCKETS.....win the series

The team didn't show up, plain and simple. They take everything for granted and don't approach the game like true professionals aside from one or two players on the team. I mean dayum, did they go out the night b4 in Houston or something. They should've ripped Houston's heart to shreds yesterday, the opportunity was there for them to make a statement and slam their asses inside, they should've scored 80 points in the paint on them and as usual did not seize the opportunity to take advantage of their mismatches. The gameplan should've been just that simple. But of course with our team, we don't know how to simplify the game and prefer to make things harder than it should be. Meanwhile teams like Cleveland and Denver are demoralizing their opponent like they should.

This team needs an attitude overhaul but it starts at the top. I think Phil has to go. His arrogance and cavalier like attitude has negatively impacted the team in terms of how they approach the game, as though teams are simply going to fallback cuz they're the "Lakers." NOT.

We need some mean streak players on the team, from 1 through 15.

"Look at above picture of Battier pulling Kobe's jersey and no foul called." - Justalakersfan

Hmm... You don't see Kobe's arm fully extended in a push off in the SAME picture?

"The refs let the Rockets hack away for the entire first half. I didn't bother seeing the 2nd half, but for Kobe to get zero free throws is ridiculous." - DT

You can blame Kobe for that one. In the games he decides to settle for jump shots instead of taking it to the rim, you will see that. BTW, you will see more of this as he gets older. Its simply the natural progression of 2's.

I'm so disappointed in the LA fan base (not all of you, granted). I can't tell you how many times I've heard from Laker fans how much more talented the Lakers are than the Rockets. You're only making your team look worse when you make light of your opponent. You would never find Rockets fans belittling an opponents ability to bring it. And its perhaps that attitude which is fueled by the fans and media there that has gotten into your team's head. They feel ENTITLED. Sorry, you have to earn it, believe it or not. So get off your duff and go get it.

I can't tell you how many times in this series I've heard the refs are in the Rocket's pocket. I'm beside myself really. Ron Ron gets ejected from 2 games. In both games, his infractions did not warrant an ejection. Its all based on reputation.

In the past 4 years Kobe is by far a dirtier player than Ron Ron. Check the stats if you don't believe me.

And STOP making excuses. You guys claim you are so superior to every team in the West. So start acting like it. If you think the REFS were the reason you got schooled in Game 4, you should probably check the stat lines again. They weren't calling fouls on either side of the ball. They were letting both teams play PLAYOFF BASKETBALL. Stop looking for bailouts. This isn't the regular season.

A Groaning, Angry, Betrayed-Feeling Jon K. Shares His Early Malformed Thoughts With Laker Nation:

Some words about the loss...

1. We lost because we didn't come to play. This lack of effort reflects a spiritual cancer in this team. Sometimes they just don't show up. Yesterday they didn't show up until the fourth quarter. Too late. I can live with getting beaten (kind of). I can't live with just not showing up to a game.

2. The Lakers were out-coached. The Rockets shifted to a super-small, super-fast lineup and the Lakers just weren't prepared for that. It seems that they were expecting to play a Yao Ming-style team play, just without Yao Ming there and only four Rockets on the court.

3. The refs were consistent, but they called a lousy style of referring. This has been a very physical series--which occurred in part because that's how the refs allowed the play to proceed. Suddenly, the refs decide to call that game as if every player was made of saltine crackers. Players would get fouls for breathing too hard on an opposing player. Certainly not what the Lakers were expecting and they didn't adapt to the refs' multiple personality disorder as well as they could have, thus contributing to falling out of their game.

4. As it was Mother's Day, I was coerced into a family gathering near Youngstown, about an hour from where I live now. Unbeknownst to me, the game was earlier than I thought and my family had no interest in returning to my home... so I was unable to unlock the powers of the lucky barstool. We have no idea the impact this absence had upon the game, but it clearly was not a positive one.

5. My family has several LeBroniacs in it which is nothing short of a wound to my soul. A thing I hate about LeBroniacs is that they are completely classless. If the Lakers are playing a team of someone who is a fan of our opposition, I may jaw with them a bit, but I'll primarily let the Lakers do the talking. LeBronaics aren't like that. They talk smack on EVERYONE all the time. All the time. If you like a team that's not a Cleveland team and you find joy in that team's success, they will do everything they can to destroy that joy and try to brand you as a shallow fool and traitor. It's awful. In addition, I have never seen a community where more people want to get out. There's a bizarre self-loathing here that is covered up by fanatical, jihad-like commitment to local sports teams... which always lose. It took me almost everything I had not to scream at my family last night. I seriously had to just get up and walk away and play with my sister's dogs. Urgh.

6. The low point for last night's game? Watching the game in the third quarter by myself, in the third quarter and my first grader nephew (whom I love--we really get along) walks into the room wearing a LeBron James jersey and says to me shyly, "Mommy says that Kobe Bryant is a bad man. He kissed some other girl when he was married." I almost lost my mind. I can't believe my sister is doing this. She doesn't even follow professional basketball. I turned to him and said curtly, "LeBron James has multiple children outside of marriage and he kisses lots of girls." My nephew's eyes widened a little bit and then he turned around and walked out of the room.

7. A quick note: I've heard about a dozen personal stories from people who have met LeBron James SINCE HE BECAME A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE (stories from when he was a kid are different) and every single story has been negative and several contain elements that I cannot share here because the Kamenetsky Brothers will not post them in good taste. Keep that in mind.

8. The fouls on Andrew Bynum were stupid, ticky-tack fouls. Way to shatter the kid's confidence, refs.

9. Time to get Andrew Bynum into a sports psychologist because the kid's head is not in the game right now. We need The Beast back. We don't need a scared kid who plays like DJ Mbenga's far less talented cousin.

10. Ohio is an awful place, BUT what you get for that awfulness is a house on five acres with two basketball courts, a swimming pool, a pond, heated cherry-wood floors, four bedrooms, three baths, a full-finished basement, two fireplaces, a fruit orchard, and a wood-burning sauna in a good school district for a few hundred thousand dollars. That's my sister's house. Anyhow, before the game we were playing basketball with my nephews and nieces and my brothers-in-law. Me? I've got no shot, but I can rebound, get lots of assists and steals and play aggressive lock-down defense. Here's the thing: Generally speaking, I suck at basketball, though I excel at other sports. If you are a professional basketball player, HOW DO YOU NOT PLAY DEFENSE IN THE PLAYOFFS!?!?!!??!? HOW CAN THAT POSSIBLY HAPPEN? HOW? Muliple times in yesterday's game I saw WIDE OPEN ROCKETS with NO ONE on them! Okay, so a mistake happens. Surely a Laker will immediately run at the player in a panic, hands outstretched, right? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Instead, Lakers sat back and just gave the guy his shot! HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN?!?!?!?!?! THIS IS THE PLAYOFF!!!!!!! All I can say was that it disgusted me. If I was on the court, that would never happen. I would play with heart. I would play to win. I would constantly keep in mind what my effort and the team's victory means to its fans.

11. Shannon Brown played well.

12. Watching Lamar Odom fall eight feet down flat on his back made the Championship suddenly disappear from my mind for an instant. If Lamar Odom got hurt and Andrew Bynum continues to play like a 18 year old rookie, then its over. Urgh.

13. This can't continue. Someone needs to scream at this team. I mean scream like a rabid lunatic. They need to wake up.

14. Josh Powell. MAKE YOUR DAMN SHOTS!!!!

15. Derek Fisher. Are you going to let a near-rookie own you like that? This cannot continue to happen. Anticipate better.

16. Tomorrow the crowd better be into the game. REAL FANS MAKE NOISE!!!!!

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

I AINT GOING NOWHERE

If you wanna leave there’s the door, So long, farewell to you
So What was the Lakers record like last year, at this point in round two
They won game 1 and won game 2 against the Utah Jazz
But then came games 3 & 4 and Utah kicked their @ss.
So at this particular point in time just one short year ago

So quit your crying, stop your whinning, let’s just see this thing through
Who cares if you lose by 30 points, or if you lose by two.
Everyone said we need to be battle tested, before the Finals we go
I don’t know about you, but I’m glad for this, We need to struggle mo.
And don’t blame 9Rings for sitting there instead of calling time-out
Let them figure things in the 2nd round so the Finals won’t be a rout
An army must be battle tested before they go to war
I don’t think you get battle tested, by going “FO”, “FO”, “FO”
I’d rather go Five, Five, Five and find out who has Heart
Than sweep round 1, round 2 and 3 and in the Finals fall apart.
Games like this show you, just who you can depend on
So when you shorten the rotation, the weakilings will be gone
The boy King and his witness thinks winning is a breeze
In the Finals the first sign of weakness, will knock them to their knees
Call me crazy, call me stupid, You can call me any bad name
But I still confess, I feel no stress, That the Lakers lost that game.
Things are not always, the way they may appear to be
So hang in there, Fans show you care and you’ll have a Staples victory
But if the worst should happen & the quest for the Ring should fail
I will still support my Laker team & those that don’t can go to Hell
TO BE CONTINUED TOMORROW IN GAME 5 ROLL CALL……………………………

Good morning,

How to put this in perspective? No chance of getting it right if you just read the posts from trolls. The Lakers didn't suck before the game, so they don't suck after the game.

No chance of getting it right if you just listen to the spin of the coach. He says 'we just came here to steal one and regain home court advantage.' I don't believe that for a nanosecond.

No chance of getting it right if you just listen to the TV commentators like JVG. Those guys get paid just to talk a lot and be interesting.

So, to borrow the title of an old Johnny Carson TV show, Who Do You Trust? I trust Magic Johnson. Sure the guy said it on TV, but we know he bleeds purple & gold. He called the Lakers' play in Game 4 "embarrassing."

Sure, the Rockets played great. Most people expected that they would, with Yao done for the season. Aaron Brooks was in a zone most players can only dream of. But at the end of the day, it's still true that the only team that can defeat the Lakers is the Lakers.

At the end of the first quarter, Phil told Lisa Salters that he thought the Rockets couldn't sustain that effort for the whole game. His plan, apparently, was to let the Rockets burn themselves out and then the better team would take over. There, in a nutshell, was the problem. Smugness. The fish rots from the head, and the smugness clearly spread through the body of the entire team.

It's easy to criticize the players. They certainly didn't do anything to distinguish themselves. But the pre-game lip service to playing hard and being ready was just that. Lip service.

This morning, waking up to Plaschke http://tinyurl.com/q4juop and Simers http://tinyurl.com/rc6bjl for once it was hard to disagree with them. How rare is that? The game made it easy for them to be clever. But why don't the Lakers make things easy for themselves? That remains the unanswered question. The team is still holding at 6 wins down with 10 to go. Tuesday is likely to make it 7 wins down with 9 to go. But why make it 9 wins to go the hard way? I still just don't get it.

Can somebody please start talking about how kobe is being held and fouled on every f-ing play. I see these replays and jerseys are being stretched, forearms are being slapped. kb is being fouled three times while going to the hole and where are the whistles? Nowhere! How are the rockets getting away with the bs????? And nobody is complaining!!! Like it wouldn't be diplomatic or macho if the pj or kb bitch about to chippy play. I am so frustrated. Posted by: Brian | May 10, 2009 at 10:04 PM

THANK YOU! How many foul shots did he get again?
LO saw what the F# was going on and said I'm out of here. The only games that are played that get ratings are The Laker games against whoever. So how happy would David Stern be to stretch this out. Kobe 10 to 12 Foul shots again becomes 1 foul shot Kobe. Are these MF.s iinsane. Stevie Wonder could see through this BS. Take nothing away from Houston, they played a hell of a
game. But when the F### do we get to play our game.
! freaking Foul shot for Kobe.

I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS... THIS IS SQUARELY ON THE COACH

I'M OFFICIALLY CALLING FOR PHIL JACKSON'S HEAD!

FIRE PJ!

For not having this team ready to play!
For not calling a timeout
For not starting Farmar/Brown over Fisher
For not making the necessary adjustments in Game
For just sitting there looking smug all season
For his post game press conference... you're not embarrased!!... really? really PJ? FU!!
For this teams superior/soft attitude, which is a direct result of their coach's "zen" attitude.

For a long time i denied it but i'm finally gonna admit it... PHIL JACKSON IS OVERRATED

FIRE PHIL JACKSON!!

LMAO at the Lakers. They think they are indestructable.
Kobe you can't be LeBron. HA HA

Hey Laker Fans,

You probably lost because your huge, arrogant egos are weighing your down. Try showing our Rockets, indeed the rest of the league, some respect for a change, okay?
Posted by: Rocket Fan | May 11, 2009 at 05:03 AM

You know you are probably right. But don't forget lifting weights makes you stronger so I think we'll keep our huge arrogant ego's that we acquired the old Fashion Way...WE EARNED THEM. We'll talk again when the Rockets get about 12 more titles.

MAMBA24,

The Lakers are still the best team in basketball which is why I'm so disgusted right now.

We're going to win this series. You know that. I know that.

But how do out players just not show up like that? How?

I'm very disappointed right now.

I'm confident that a victory will be our's on Tuesday, but, today, I feel disappointed.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

THe "most talented roster" isn't true; unfortunately I think that the team has bought into that, which makes them believe that they can turn it on and off.

Preseason, it looked like that would be the case, but with the level of play that they have been getting, pretty consistently, it doesn't appear to be the case at this point in the season.

That means that they need to up the levels of focus, hustle, and teamwork to compensate. They haven't shown the willingess to do that consistently this season.

A championship is what this team will be measured by ... and until that ship has sailed, I stand behind our team and whilst I'm not proud of last night's game ... I'm definitely proud of what this team has achieved so far
24 + 16 + [1]7 = The Purple Tinted Golden Age

NOW THAT'S WHAT THE F# I'M TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!
EITHER COME CORRECT OR TALK TO THE SHERIFF

Rick Friedman,

"The team is still holding at 6 wins down with 10 to go. Tuesday is likely to make it 7 wins down with 9 to go. But why make it 9 wins to go the hard way? I still just don't get it."

The only optimism I can find out of this is that the more games we play, the better the opportunity it is for Andrew Bynum to play himself into shape for the Finals.

I'm really grasping at straws here.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

Mamba24,

"You know you are probably right. But don't forget lifting weights makes you stronger so I think we'll keep our huge arrogant ego's that we acquired the old Fashion Way...WE EARNED THEM. We'll talk again when the Rockets get about 12 more titles"

I laughed.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

FIRE PHIL JACKSON!! Posted by: game.r | May 11, 2009 at 07:33 AM

AND THEN WHAT?

For a long time i denied it but i'm finally gonna admit it... PHIL JACKSON IS OVERRATED FIRE PHIL JACKSON!!
Posted by: game.r | May 11, 2009 at 07:33 AM

For a long time I denied it but I'm finally gonna admit it.
Game.R You are one funny dude.

FIRE the coach.

FIRE the louzy and lazy coach.

FIRE the coach who doesn't know coaching.

FIRE the arrogant coach who ALWASY blame on the players and never shouder any responsibility.

FIRE any in the Lakers organization who has no gut to criticize him. Pathetic.

Well, well, well....

Everybody goes nuts after this Laker loss. How anyone can be surprised with their performence is beyond me.

This has been going on all year long. They need to be prodded and pushed (lose games) to win. This is the way it will be the rest of the way.

Like I said in previous threads, the Lakers will be challenged heavily. These playoffs will be heart wrenching.

But understand one thing. Which each embarrassing loss and with each humiliating performance, the Lakers will get better. They are in the midst of finding their championship mettle.

Stay on board people.

Go Lakers!!

(BTW - If Phil wants to start Shannon, I wouldn't be totally upset.)

Very disappointing.

This team can only be described as an enigma. They assume other teams will pack it in and thus bring varying levels of intensity in different games as well as within games. Lost leads, playing to the competition, and games where they don't show up, are all evidence of that.

I'm worried they might still lose this this series because the Rockets will continue to unleash Aaron Brooks and the Lakers won't be able to stop him.

I hope the Lakers decide to come and play in the next game.

Andrew Bynum is a massive disappointment in this postseason, plain and simple. He's shrunk in the face of the pressure. I hope he gets to play a whole season next year so we don't have this trash again next postseason. Terrible. Just terrible.

As long the Suns are sitting at home watching the playoffs and their loser MVP continues to avoid postseason success, I'll be slightly amused. What a bunch of losers.

JON K, if the crowds at the Staples show the passion that the bloggers show here tomorrow it will be no contest. And you know what I think they will This has bought out the passion in Laker Nation and one thing you don't want to be around is an enraged Beast and a F#ed with Mamba. Jon K. HOLD ON! WE WILL PREVAIL. And then for the entusiasm that you have shown that helped rouse us when we are down you shall be awarded The Laker TOM golden Drum award and will with Laker Tom beat the Drum to announce the arrival of Dynasty # 4. Good things never come easy and what does come easy is not as heavily valued as that, in which your blood, sweat and tears is devoted. THANK YOU JON K FOR YOUR DEVOTION. Thank you LAKER NATION FOR YOUR PASSION WHETHER NEGATIVE OR POSITIVE. It just shows how deeply we Love our Team.
LAKERS YESTERDAY LAKERS TODAY LAKERS TOMORROW LAKERS FOREVER.

Are you with us Laker Nation. They can take a game but they can never take our 3 Dynasties, 14 Titles and...\
FREEDOM!!!!!!!!

I BOW BEFORE THE WORDS OF A MASTER!!!!

Gutless, that's all you can call it. Totally, GUTLESS. Congratulations to the Cavs for winning it all this year. I'm a life long Laker fan but I'm not a fan of this team. Not anymore.. Get used to being in second place for a while, guys. Maybe it's time for management to consider skuttling this team a'la the Detroit Pistons and try and find players willing to play hard to win?

"You guys claim you are so superior to every team in the West. "

You guys? We're fans and we're not on the team. Did you hear the Lakers players saying that?

Get a grip. You and every other crazy headed fan does nothing but embarrass his or herself by making this about other fans and not about basketball. Do you even care about the basketball? Maybe that could be the topic of discussion and your reason for hate, but what good would it do?

It might be more helpful to you to just consider the basketball and not attack fans as your reason for hating the Lakers. That's lame.

A little shoutout..

How 'bout Shannon Brown!

You know, regardless of whether he becomes a top quality point gaurd in this league or not, hasn't he shown thus far exactly what the Lakers need at the one? And in the pressure packed playoffs for that matter?

Dude seemingly is in complete control, makes the right decisions, makes his shots, plays defense, and on top of all that, can jump through the freakin roof!

I think it's time to unleash the beast....

...the beast known as Shannon Brown.

Go lakers!!!

Mamba... you're the king!!!

How do you do that????

Good morning Mamba24 & Laker morning CRUE.

Not much to be happy about after this Game 4 debacle (what is it about Game 4 debacles??) but at least we will have a chance to redeem ourselves tomorrow night.

I TOO AM STILL HERE.

WE ARE THE FREAKING LOS ANGELES LAKERS.

I have FAITH in this team. They will not go quietly into the night.

I REALLY hope LO is ok - we need him to be ready to go. (Tell me - shouldn't that have been called a block on Battier?)

WHY in god's name can Kobe not get to the free throw line??????? I am SERIOUSLY pissed off by this. There is NO WAY that anyone can look me in the eye and say he's not being fouled pretty much every time he touches the ball.

I was very disappointed by the live chat yesterday. So many trolls and bandwagoners. I had to check out early, like Faith and several others. IF YOU CAN"T CHEER FOR YOUR TEAM DURING ADVERSITY, YOU ARE NOT WORTHY OF BEING CALLED A LAKER FAN. I understand being upset - really I do - but calling out your team as being weak, and soft, and that they suck, and they should be traded, etc etc etc - IS JUST LAME. Grow some cojones and man up. I'm not saying to be all happy and cheerful about it - no one wants to see that kind of play - but the least you can do is be somewhat supportive. Maybe offer something constructive to the discussion. But I guess that will happen when they win, right? Then you'll jump back on board and say you knew it all along.....

COME ON LAKERS - MAKE US PROUD!! I know your Mama's want revenge.

GO LAKERS!!!!! WE GOT THIS!!!!!!

Hi five and major respect to any Laker fan that actually watched that debacle.

This is why it's important to appreciate dominating players, teams and performances when they happen. They don't happen all that often.

Sports is an ephemeral euphoria.

remember guys, the first year Lakers won championship with shaq, Lakers were up 3-1 against portland, and then they let portland came back from behind and tie the series at 3-3 and then on the 7th game portland was up 15 beginning of 4th quarter? So, shit like this happens. Lakers are a young bunch and they desperately lacks or needs the presence of few veterans like Ron Harper to keep them in check when they lose focus. RIght now, its the focus that they are losing. But they should be all right. I think the bar is too high for them to lose a game like yesterday and there's noo excuse. But i guess it comes with a young talented team like the Lakers. If you talk about cleveland, they are lucky that they didnt really face any team like Utah and Houston in their playoff series and they never were tested. Its yet to be see how cleveland reacts with a tough team.

so, I guess i am saying lakers will be all right. ITs to be expected. Even though they win this series, expect more letdowns to come in the future series and if they dont learn from these letdowns, they wont see the championship trophy.

Jerry Ferro -

Buh bye. Don't let the Championship Bandwagon door hit you in the ass on the way out.

Just make sure you come back on in June and apologize for your sins. Maybe we'll let you ride in the back.

The Rockets are alot better than we Laker fans give them credit for.

For all of you abandoning the Lakers after yesterdays loss.

Step 2: Remove all the Laker Gear from your closet.

step 3: Never wear a KB24 jersey again, or any other Laker jersey for that matter.

step 4: Find yourself another NBA team to support [If you wanna call it that].

PROBLEM SOLVED!

How come I don't see any blog from those so-called True Laker fans like Mamba24, LakerTom, Taliq and Co. who got pissed off when a Laker fan says something negative to their beloved team. I guess you're so EMBARRASSED to write something about this present Team. You should, and regret depending this team from so called fair-weather fans like Korey, Ninoy and myself, for this team is just an embarrassment for the LAKER TRADITION. Even if this present team wins the championship I have no more respect for them the way they treated the games differently everytime.

Mamba24,

"The only games that are played that get ratings are The Laker games against whoever"

I hate (no I dont) to be the one always correcting hyopic Laker fan. I dont know if you know this but the Celtic/Bulls 3 OT game was the most watched game or playoff game in cable history! Get over yourself Laker fan ... ur not that good. I just dont know why you guys think your so much better than everybody else. Even the day after you get ur a$$ kicked up and down the court. If fans watch, its to watch you get you a$$ kicked not to watch your team! GET OVER URSELF!!!

I wish I could remember the idiot Laker fan who was stupid enough to post a comparison of KGs stats and Bynum. I would love to give him the credit he deserves ... not to mention the fools who agreed with him and gave him props for "telling me." Your loss of Bynum might not even compare to our loss of Leon Powe. At least I know Leon is gonna bring it every nite.

What a class act that Phil is. Why do reporters even bother talking to him? They should just leave the room when he walks in. He is rude arrogant and classless. Who cares what he has to say? I dont. I watched the game. I know what happened. Why do I need to hear it from him? The same thing happened that has always happened to him when he didnt have a guy named Jordan or Shaq on his team!

Wait a minute. For Red to have had a Love child that
means someone would have had to Love that dried up
jealous old fool. The man blamed 9Rings for having MJ
Pippen Shaq and Kobie to get his titles.. Yet this senile MF had JO JO White, The Chief , Bob Cousy, Bill Russel, Bill Sharman, John Havlicek, Sam Jones, K.C. jones Dave Cownens and still 9Rings with less hall of fame talent
has the same amount of Rings. If anybody is overrated
it's Red. Bill Russel and KC Jones ran most of those Celtics teams and the only reason they were not the coach is skin color. Finally Russsel in his last year was appointed the 1st black Coach. F# RED!!!

No need of apology Mamba24, the newcomers have misunderstood what we have been doing here, they were hurt by the quality of loss and are venting on the face of the blog which is Mamba24's roll call and sunshine LakerTom. The fact is the players and the coaching staff failed us, the fans whether GHF, GHE or Fair weather or wayside kibitzers are wishing to finish this series. The game was so unlakerlike to just disappear on Mothers Day. What a shame Kobe, Gasol, Lamar, Fisher and Ariza? You should be embarrassed for your complacent attitudes and arrogance in your show of no heart. Only scum artists who are gambling for their loss can do such a thing to just let evaporate in front of nonchalant stars like brooks, battier, artest and scola and give them a platform to brag about their lost glory. Another plausible reason is CHARITY, giving them enough to celebrate for one game then hang them in the gallows for Game 5 & 6. And charity could hurt them too for they lost the momentum and get disorganized. When the starters are off, at least the bench should take care of the slack. Unfortunately, they sucked also to the bone except for one shinning player, Shannon, he is a gamer. The rest of the crew: Walton, Farmar, Powell and Sasha I just wish they disappear after these playoffs, go away, these players quoting the famous lines of Simon Cowell are forgettable.

So be it, I hope there will be peace in the blog. No need to blame any blogger here as long as they are Laker fans and if your name was mentioned as the cause of the debacle, "forgive them for they don't know what they are doing" - somehow in some wayin the grand scheme of things, they will realize that they too are mistaken. It is the fault of the players and coaches and not the fans.

I would love for Kobe to show emotion FOR THE TEAM and get all up in arms after a loss.

His arrogance is annoying at this point?

He seems to only get pumped up when he's going one on one, i.e yelling to the announcers that Shane Battier, "can't gaurd me!".

Really? Really?? Kobester, my man. Do you really need to shout that?If this means anything, we already know you are the baddest baller on the planet.

You've got so many weapons on this team, Kobe.....USE THEM!!

Lead this team, Kobe. Lead them!!

(BTW - I'm a huge Kobe fan. I just wish he's show some humility out there)

Go Lakers!!!

Mamba... you're the king!!! How do you do that????
Posted by: keifo | May 11, 2009 at 08:40 AM

I'm no King. Jon K deservres all the accolades for holding the factions together and inspiring us to hang in there. I just surf off his enthusiasm along with others like you, Laker Tom, JustAnotherMambaFan, etc........I do what we all do. Apreciate our team through the rough times and the good times. And thank you Keifo any bandwagon I'm
on, I want you as shotgun. LOL!

Ninoy and Rudy,

I know Korey since his name appeared on this blog. He was the first blogger here who called my attention for not being a fanatic and yet I call myself a fan. Korey will never, never junk his first love team, the Lakers. He too, was hurt by the poor performance. However, what Korey was saying is that whenever he exercises his prerogatives to criticize the team under lackadaisical performance, there are bloggers here who immediately jumped on him and refused to reason out on what is obvious. From the words of quintessential fan, Jack N."they can't handle the truth". The same way with you Rudy and Ninoy I hope you concentrate on the players and coaches who are public figures and not blame bloggers here who are also grieving for the loss. thanks in advance for being considerate.

I think Colin Cowherd is right.

You can't win a championship with a FINESSE Frontcourt.

If your Frontcourt doesnt IMPOSE it's will on smaller players, inferior players, then you cant win a championship.

Bottom Line.

If Gasol can't put more than 12 points up (in 3 qtrs) on a undersized team, If Lamar Odom cant BRUISE that team, If Andrew Bynum cant assert their advantage on that team, THEN WHAT ADVANTAGE DO THE LAKERS HAVE?

They just double Kobe triple Kobe quadruple Kobe.

We become a perimeter team with spotty shooters and thus VULNERABLE.

I've been saying it all year. I love MY TEAM. But at the same time, I'm embarassed for MY TEAM.

These guys have shown me repeatedly that they really DONT truly want to win. Cuz if they did, they would be insulted how their reputation and would want to prove EVERY NIGHT that we will not be punked.

So at this point, I dont care what else happens if this team doesnt win a chip. I dont care if we beat houston by 20+ the next games. That proves nothing.

I want to see what happens when we are up 1-0,2-0 on Denver. What does this team do when everything is going good? Probably Go Soft. And sadly, nobody would be surprised.

MAN YOU ARE GOOD!!!! KUDO'S

I'm still here, rooting for my favorite team. This Lakers group is a LOT better than the Rockets. Now, they just need to play like it.

I'll be watching tomorrow, and I know the outcome will be entirely different. I expect the Lakers to come out focused and determined for the next two games, and this series will be over in 6.

Yesterday was the classic rallying game for the Rockets. Yao is gone, the players stepped up and hit crazy shots. It won't happen again, because the Lakers are gonna lock it down.

Go Lake Show!

Sasha cant shoot a pea in the Ocean from the Santa Monica Pier, Bynum has lost all confidence in his knee. Needs to strengthen and play a full season and Fisher has gon into the worst slupm I think I have ever seen in him. Our shooters and Inside presence our gone. Do I need to say more. How come the Lakers never have a Bullet Guard. Phil like the big guards, but we always get killed by them. I hope they get through this, but I don't know how we can get by Denver.

Very Disapointing effort in the Playoffs. I though this is what they were waiting for all year. We need a few new pieces. Artest for Odom in last off season and we would be un stoppable.

CrzyFan

very interesting.....

Phil Jackson said: What did I tell ya before the game? We always played down to the level of inferior opponents numerous times during the regular season. WOW, does that make him a great fortune teller or a lousy coach?

More interestingly, he then said: You guys heard my litany before the game. You know what I was concerned about. There's ABSOLUTELY NO SURPRISE. WOW, sounds like you and me; except we have to pay $2000 to sit by the court side, and he gets paid 12 million instead. DID HE EVER COACH?

Interestingly he also said: We're a little bit of a team that needs to have sometimes a spark put in us to play. WOW, no kidding, I wonder what a coach's responsibility is?

A good coach produced some famed bench players such as Tony Allen, Glen Davis, Eddie House, Leon Powe of the Celtics we recently witness. Phil Jackson created squabbling between Shaq and Kobe and shoved every bench player he ever has into pitching dark corner and make them feel depressed. I still remember vividly that Mbenga blocked 3 shoots in 5 mins he was playing of a game.

He's just an arrogant, incapable, and lazy coach.

The difference between the 2 is that Red built his teams you fool! Phil walked into Chicago with MJ and into Lakers with Shaq and Kobe already on the team.

The Chief? Cownens? Learn how to spell and please dont write about the Celtics if you dont know what your talkn about. Stick to writing about your own team. How did Parish and Cownens help Red win any of his 9 rings you complete moron? And stop with "MF" bombs!

Kobie? Your like the idiot the other nite who said that the Lakers lost cuz Byrant Scott was injured! On second thought dont write about your own team ... you dont even know them!

Finally in his last year Russell was appointed the 1st black coach? In his last yr?

Edwin G.,
thanks for interpreting my words.

I really dont know if I am making sense lately the way I was stung from last afternoon...

I called you out before?...hmm...well, I probably did... when it comes to the lakers, I'm emotional! But never anything personal, it's all Laker love on my end...

Let's just hope some form of prolonged redemption can happen for the team.

I believe they'll bounce back from yesterday.

BUT, what I have yet to see is this team truly RUB it in on a team. Take a 20 point lead and make it 30. Take a 8 game winning streak and win 15 in a row. Too often, this group of guys is satisfied and are OK with failure.

I cant imagine playing sports like that...but then again, I cant imagine making that salary either.

Know whats funny to me? Whats funny to me is how NON champions like mark jackson, jvg, and barkley know what it takes to be a champion.

Phil must go. He can't coach anymore. We need B. Scott back. WTF is with Bynum, Walton, Farmer, Powell, Ye, Morrison, and Vujacheck or whatever his name is?
We need a big trade next year, even Kobe is not safe.
I can see Paula going, and no one will want Bynum for his big unearned salary.
You guys played like PUNKS, Just like the last game in the Finals.
B. Scott, Magic, James, Kareem, Mychal, Orlando Woolridge, Nixon, even Madsen has more heart then the current suckas.
For 40 years I have been watching these guys.
This current crop needs a makeover, starting at the top.
Bring back Riles.
I will apologize profusely tommorow night as you guys are my team. I wonder how many people broke their T.Vs. yesterday after that "CRAPFEST"?
Like other posters posted, Boston and Cleveland play 48 minutes hard. Magic used to play the whole game.
They can rest after the season or when they are dead.
Maybe they can join Nick in Cancun Friday.

Still very, very pissed off.

These Lakers are really a substandard team. Glamor, Glitz and Glory without earning anything.

If they keep up with the lack of energy and desire to win, this team will be the California counterpart to the Texas Mavericks.

I used to think this team can match the 1999-2000 team when we went the max 5 games against the Kings, 4-1 against the Suns, and maybe a 7 game series against the Nuggets. I used to believe that this is a new team surging with a Dynasty in hand. It still could, but after the regular season and so far what we have seen in the post season, this team is EXPECTING to make it to the finals WITHOUT EARNING.

I could be very wrong. I hope I am.

I am also tossed between the coaching staff's failures, or the players lack of desire to execute and deliver. Is it the players or the coaches?

Shannon Brown was the only bright side to that game. Kobe is great but how many more perimeter fadeaways can you keep shooting? Pau, even Shaq had a hardtime backing down the Jahadi Whites and Malik Roses of the NBA. He called them Tree Stomps and Stalks. Face up Pau. (But really I got love and you have been our ONLY consistent Center. Thanks for the 30 points Senor. Just venting) Bynum is really shocking the hell out of me. Sure I have been hard about the Beast label, but he was playing much better during the last 4 regular season games. All I ask for at this point is after you make a mistake, look and act like you want to correct it on the other end. I'm down with the "upside" conversations with this kid. Show and prove AB. Please don't peak at the Dalembert level. Cap is a genius, Kurt has the wit and intelligence and Phil has 9 rings. What more do you need as far as coaching?

Lamar get better and speedy recovery.

Over one game? Yes. Over one game.

Come to think of it, the Celtics had 3 game 7's, and one 6 game series.

Then again, the Jazz went to the finals and never won a ring. And were suppossed to have the MJ counterpart. Are we the 90's Jazz? The 2000's Mavericks, or the LA ticket sellers?

I just want a team to try on their bad days...

OK LA, just keep on telling yourself you got rolled from tip to buzzer because of the ref's. It'll help you deal with the pain and realization that the Lakers aren't a championship team.

Mamba24,

"The only games that are played that get ratings are The Laker games against whoever"

I hate (no I dont) to be the one always correcting hyopic Laker fan. I dont know if you know this but the Celtic/Bulls 3 OT game was the most watched game or playoff game in cable history! It's About Kobe, This Is It!!!

Great teams are defined by their leaders. A leader gets his team to perform at a level close to his own. Of course, they are not as talented as the leader, but it's his job to get them all playing at a high level when it matters most.

Can Kobe play that role? Is he a true leader of men or the greatest solo act ever to lace them up? This will be determined in the next weeks.

We've gone as far as we can without a complete team concept. It's up to Kobe to get his teammates to play with him and for him.

I don't get the feeling that his teammates will take a bullet for him the way Magic and Bird and Michael and Isaah and Hakeem and Duncan and Shaq and Wade and KG and Lebron's teammates do. There still seems to be a disconnect on being all for one and one for all.

Kobe has always been above the crowd. He never went to college, never seemed to be one of the guys. He's always been exceptional, gifted, arrogant and stubborn. Can he win the championship his way? Can he be a true leader to take his team all the way? Does he possess that special gift? It's a gift that's more than just being the best basketball player on the planet. Wilt Chamberlain was arguably the greatest center ever, but he wasn't a great team player, thus he only won a few championships.

Is Kobe the equivalent of Chamberlain?

I hope not, but I'm starting to wonder.

LA beware, true Rocket fans know we could not win with Yao (Too slow..Too clumsy). The Rockets are now more atheltic and should now give you Lakers a run for your money. Rockets in Seven...Yes in the Staple Center.

A REMINDER TO EVERYONE:

TONE DOWN THE LANGUAGE. If you're talking smack, upset over yesterday's result, or whatever, that's fine (to a point), but please remember to abide by our standards. The best way to make sure your comment goes through is not to test the boundaries. Don't try to sneak in curse words, or use Mother **&@(#& or sub out a letter here and there. Make your point, be civil.

BK

very interesting.....

Phil Jackson said: "What did I tell ya before the game? We always played down to the level of inferior opponents numerous times during the regular season". WOW, does that make him a great fortune teller or a lousy coach?

More interestingly, he then said: "You guys heard my litany before the game. You know what I was concerned about. There's ABSOLUTELY NO SURPRISE." WOW, sounds like you and me; except we have to pay $2000 to sit by the court side, and he gets paid 12 million instead. DID HE EVER COACH?

Interestingly he also said: "We're a little bit of a team that needs to have sometimes a spark put in us to play." WOW, no kidding, I wonder what a coach's responsibility is?

A good coach produced some famed bench players such as Tony Allen, Glen Davis, Eddie House, Leon Powe of the Celtics we recently witness. Phil Jackson created squabbling between Shaq and Kobe and shoved every bench player he ever has into pitching dark corner and make them feel depressed. I still remember vividly that Mbenga blocked 3 shoots in 5 mins he was playing of a game.

He's just an arrogant, incapable, and lazy coach.

Mamba24,

Thanks for being so ignor...err, I mean arrogant.

It just adds fuel to our fire.

Signed,
A Rockets Fan

Mamba24,

All that sounds great! And?

As I always say .... SCOREBOARD!!!

MOTHER OF GOD IS THIS THE END OF RICO? Get serious
Texan. When the smoke clears you'll find one team standing and that team willl be wearing Purple & Gold. LAKERS TODAY LAKERS TOMORROW LAKERS FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can understand the outrage about yesterday's loss. I am not happy about it either. But I do have a much better feeling about winning this series than I did after game 2. After yesterday's humiliation, I expect these Lakers, who do have A LOT of heart, to bounce back with full vengeance.

The Rockets came out yesterday with so much emotion. It's common to see a team come out like that after losing an important player. Also, since it was Yao Ming, they completely changed their style of play. A combination of those two things mixed with hot 3 point shooting can catch the opponent by surprise. Thus the Lakers, were beaten through 3 qtrs.

In my opinion, the Lakers will bounce back and win the next 2 games because:

1. The emotional advantage for the Rockets is short term.
2. The Lakers will be ready for the Rockets Yao-less style of play.
3. The Rockets will not get as many open shots as the Lakers adjust their defense.
4. Pau Gasol will own the paint.

The Pau Gasol haters like to jump on him about being soft. Pau Gasol is not soft. I hope we pound the ball down low and just let him go to work in game five. This is his time. This is his time to prove to the basketball world that he is the best PF in the game. There's no Yao Ming out there anymore, so there's no excuses anymore. He needs to come out and play the game with confidence and authority. When he does that, nobody can handle him. I full expect that to happen going up against Chuck Hayes, Luis Scola, and Carl Landry.

As a matter of fact, Andrew Bynum should be able to get his shots too.

A lot of people are getting down on Fisher. Fisher is the heart and soul of this team. Don't forget that. The Lakers, as a team, will make adjustments in guarding Aaron Brooks. It will not be as easy for Brooks in games 5 and 6 as the defense will be able to put more focus on him with Yao out.

I have no doubt in my mind that the Lakers are now going to not only beat the Rockets, but they will demoralize them. The Rocket team without Yao faces huge obstacles in trying to beat the Lakers. So many things have to go right for them, while so many things have to go wrong for the Lakers. With the Lakers being humiliated like they were yesterday, how could they not want to come back and play to the fullest of their ability?

Go Lakers!

I just wanna help Phill ... Saying this was emberrasing lost .. and yes were very much .... They should be able to stop brooks ... and Kobe needs to stop giving to much room to Bettier ... play defense pretend hi is the best player to cover ... not just let him shoot .... .. after this terrible lost .. i dont give The laker the way they playing they dont have a shot to the title ... just get ready for next year ... maybe we can get some real physical players .. that care more abt the game .........

let's face it Lakers fan, our team is SOFT. This team lacks the championship temperment necessary to win a championship. Obviously not all teams are "born" with it, they have to develop it. Boston developed the championship mentality during the course of last year's surprisingly difficult Eastern Conference finals, while the Lakers cakewalk last year left them woefully unprepared for the Boston D.

I would like to hope that the Laker difficulties will help them develop some mental toughness, but I honestly thought that last year's beatdown would have been sufficient. I'm not sure the Lakers have learned anything from last year's butt-kicking, nor have they learned anything from their head-scratching losses this year.

I hope everything I say is wrong and the Lakers make me look like an idiot. But after watching the Lakers sleepwalk their way through yet another game, compounded by the fact that Phil Jackson no longer actively coaches during games, I'm having serious doubts about the team.

Then again, the Jazz went to the finals and never won a ring. And were suppossed to have the MJ counterpart. Are we the 90's Jazz? The 2000's Mavericks, or the LA ticket sellers? I just want a team to try on their bad days... Posted by: Charles | May 11, 2009 at 09:37 AM

Good Morning Charles my brother. This two will pass.
Nothing is Big enough to stop the destiny of Dynasty #4.

PHIL AINT GOING NO D@MN WHERE BUT TO STAPLES TO WIN GAME 5.

Jon K. sez:

"7. Keep that in mind."

AHAHAHA!!! Get off the 'Brawn bashing, Jon K, it makes you and the other laker homers appear ridiculous!

Really, I mean, c'mon! "I heard LeBron does this and this and this...."

GO SUNS!

"most watched game or playoff game in cable history!"

Wow, really, the most in cable history. That's a tenth of the average network audience. Impressive. Those network idiots should have booked the Celtics and Bulls on Christmas day.

Chicago is a great sports town. They sellout the Bears when they're 1-14 on a 10 below Sunday in December.

Man Ya'll stunk it up.
-No speed at the point
-Kobe was contained
(Battier for President 2016!)
-Ya'll bigs got outplayed by Hayes, Scola, and Landry

ARE YA'LL SERIOUS???

Houston in 6!!!!!

Oh Yeah,

And ya'll are soft!!!

Mamba24,

You are the king.

utzworld is the Pope.

I'm just a field general running around manically punching the opposition in the throat.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

Thank you Kevin Ding. Thank you for your sanity.

We (I) hold the Lakers to a higher standard than I would say... the Clippers... or any other team in the NBA.

Why?

Because as the premier team in the NBA (some would say sports) we serve as a model to other programs. It's not JUST about winning. It's about excellence.

Better players.
Better coaches.
Better systems.
Better commitment.
Better professionalism.

Excellence.

No matter how much talent you have, it means nothing without heart and commitment.

We know how good this team is. We saw that in Game Five against Utah and Games Two and Three against Houston.

During those games the Lakers weren't playing above their standing potential. They weren't playing "games of a lifetime" where they somehow transcended their natural abilities and played an "inspired" game.

Nope.

They were playing around 75-85% of their potential. They were playing good basketball, but not their best.

Good solid Lakers basketball.

So, when I see this team play against Houston at 35% of their potential, I just freak out because not only are they letting Laker Nation down, their letting themselves down.

Chicken littles are fools. I am not panicking. I am simply feeling profound disappointment that the Lakers choose to play so far beneath their potential.

I expect revenge on Tuesday.

I expect the team I know and love to play with energy and heart.

And I expect the fans to be as loud as a jet engine.

Anything less is insufficient.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

Absolutely embarrassing!!! What a pathetic effort. I have been a Lakers fan since I was 5 years old and have never seen anything so lackluster as what the Lakers called showing up for the game. Every single player should be totally embarrassed, Houston showed wha tit means to play with heart, effort and how the Lakers need to play if they want to win a championship.

As a fan I am truly concerned, this is the same mentality they had with Boston in game 6 last year. Totally embarrassed again on national television, again. Where is your pride Lakers? That's the purple and gold of West, Kareem, Worthy, Magic that you are representing. You embarrassed yoursleves yesterday but worst yet you embarrassed your fans who are always behind you. You guys need to grow up and stop thinking that jsut because you have the most talented team that you should win the title. Start watching ESPN classic and see how champiosnhips are really won: effort, un-selfish team basketball, killer instinct, toughness.

Unless you change your attitude quickly, you won't even get the chance to play for a title. Toughen-up quickly or your vacation starts early this year.

Outlaw how are you man. Has Baby Outlaw
started giving Dfish tips yet LOL!

NBA action is crap-tastic!

That pretty much sums up my emotions for that "game". AK nailed it in his thread that they just plain didn't show up. It is a disservice to Mom's everywhere (except for Rocket Moms, I suppose).

I felt like this game started going down hill from the opening tip. When Ariza pretty much dropped the ball, saved it by creating a fast break for the Rockets, I thought nobody on the court looked ready to play. Nobody. Not even Kobe. He shot better than he did in Game 1, but he made much worse decisions. Yes he's getting fouled and there are no calls being made, yes it must be very frustrating dealing with a complete lack of respect and to have a Battier's rep as a "defensive-stopper" being cemented in this series because of it, but he's our mega-watt super-star. He needs to play smarter. He's playing at one speed, he's settling for fade-aways and multi-dribble pull-ups, and he's not playing defense like we know he can.

Where is Olympic Kobe? That's the one that takes us to the Finals and beyond. Where is Olympic Pau Gasol? That is the guy that makes us unbeatable. When these two are working together, helping each other, this team wins at an alarming rate (alarming to the rest of the NBA), but when Kobe goes solo and Pau has to work to even get the ball in the post, that's when were ordinary. No ball movement, no easy hoops, no cutters through the lane. Our offence was more stagnant than a New Jersey bog.

It doesn't look like Sasha or Farmar can be counted on at all this year. Maybe Sasha's ankle isn't fully healed, maybe Farmar's foot is worse than he lets on, if so, do us all a favor and sit your ass down. Ride the pine and get healthy because when you 'help the team' it's kind of like getting punched in the face. Luke had a bad game, he's been playing well until yesterday, so he gets a 'crap pass'. But Sasha and Farmar are thinking waaaaaay too much out there. No more celebrations if you make a basket, no more histrionics for touch fouls. Neither one of you has earned that right, especially considering how you have played the whole year. Man up, play hard, if thw whistle blows, it's time to adjust your aggression but not your intensity.

I know I might get massacred on this one (especially by Laker Tom, whom I respect), but sit Bynum down, tell him your going to play him for 5 minute stretches, regardless of fouls, and play him at the beginning of the 2nd quarter and the end of the third. 10 minutes of burn, the reason being that he may play himself into Playoff shape, but I don't expect him to be an impact player this year. I just don't see it happening. He looks like a rookie, his hands are like two lead balloons, his timing is off and most of all he doesn't have the intensity that made opposing guards fear to tread in the paint.

Of course, the problem with that is wether or not Lamar will play on Tuesday. If he doesn't and we're forced to play Bynum for extended minutes than we have to have a radical shift on both the offence and defensive ends. On defence we'll need to communicate and funnel. On offence we'll need to work through Gasol at the top of the key or out of the post (which we should be doing anyway, but it'll be even more important because he will command a double, thereby freeing up somebody) and we'll need to get Andrew started early, like the first three plays of the game early, the results of which should not be fifteen foot jump shots by our 7 footer. Play like a big and you'll be reffed like a big, play like a guard and watch those silly touch fouls pile up.

If Lamar is hurt, I think we get bounced in this round. he means that much to this team. He does everything nobody else does. Defends better than most, rebounds better than most, gets opposing bigs in foul trouble and has helped stretch the floor with his shooting. I really hope he's OK and that the staff is ordering extra Dit Jow.

But for me, the worst thing about yesterday was that we looked like we're entitled to win this thing. That somehow this team is owed a championship. That is bull crap. They have to TAKE the championship, it's not a special that you order at your favorite eatery. They have to kick ass to win it and they do not look like they believe that. They look like all they have to do is show up at some arena and play some funny game and it'll all work out. I wouldn't have believed that sort of attitude possible, given how we ended last year.

If I were to predict a championship team right now, it'd be Cleveland or Denver. Which I'd rather not see.

Weak.

"THE LAKERS EMBARRASSED THEMSELVES, THEIR FANS, AND THE ORGANIZATION TODAY."
