Luke Walton out for Game 5
Just got an email from the Lakers' Media Relations Dept. An MRI of Luke Walton's ankle sprained during Game 4 revealed a partial tear of the deltoid ligament. He'll be out indefinitely, with a re-evaluation coming in about a week.
Bad news for Walton, who enjoyed his best game of the series Saturday, combining with Shannon Brown and Sasha Vujacic to spark a key second quarter rally. How bad of news this is for the Lakers remains to be seen.
Walton's absence could mean additional PT for members of an already shortened rotation, unless Phil Jackson is confident giving Adam Morrison some extended burn (and judging by Ammo's 0 minutes of playoff run, he's not). Instead, we may just see Kobe and Lamar Odom spending more time at the wing. That's not a terrible thing (although LO is much better at the four), but it does potentially affect PJ's substitutions, particularly in trying to get folks rest. Depending on Lamar's SF minutes and/or Andrew Bynum's effectiveness, Josh Powell might find himself in the mix a little more often.
I also don't think it's out of the question that Jordan Farmar could get some spot minutes, with Lamar Odom now a starter, the second unit down a primary ball handler, and neither Vujacic nor Brown considered a choice option along those lines (although given how he's played lately, the same could be said about Farmar). One of the big reasons Brown was able to bump Farmar out of the rotation- beyond simply outplaying him- was that with LO rejoining the mob, he and Walton were able to run the O, which allowed Brown to play off ball without sacrificing fluidity. Between LO now starting and Walton's situation, that luxury becomes tougher to come by. This can be remedied by playing Kobe and LO even more with the second unit, but like I said earlier, that could also leave them weary.
Walton out an extended period could also, believe it or not, become an issue for certain defensive matchups. Luke tends to be more effective than Trevor Ariza against some of the burlier wing players the Lakers may face (in particular, Carmelo Anthony). TA is obviously a much better overall defender, but he's not as strong as Luke, which makes him easier to post up.
In any event, "No Luke Walton = No title" feels like something of a stretch. But I do think he'll be missed, so hopefully, it's a return sooner rather than later.

sth - LOL - I saw that...!!
Also must say that the sweater he was rocking really is not the best of looks. Especially with the bottom button undone like that. Made him look like he had a little something more than usual down the front of his pants.
