Lakers 125, Jazz 112: Any questions?

April 15, 2009 | 12:47 am

Before Tuesday night's regular season finale at Staples against the Jazz, there were plenty of questions Pau Gasol drives past Carlos Boozer about how the Lakers would approach the game.  Win, and they draw Utah in the first round of the playoffs.  Lose, and they might get an opponent of a decidedly less physical nature in Dallas or New Orleans.  Well, after LA's emphatic 125-112 win, the Lakers clearly sent a message to their now first-round foes:

"We'll play you, we're better than you, we're going to beat you."

After a foul marred first half that left the visitors with a 29-10 advantage in free throws attempted, Kobe on the bench with foul trouble, and the Lakers with a scant one point lead, LA blew the doors off in the second.  69 points on nearly 60% shooting.  Out of the break, the Lakers quickly pushed out to a nine point lead, Utah pushed back to tie it at 68.  So the Lakers pushed again.  Hard.  They outscored the Jazz 23-15 over the rest of the quarter, then started the fourth with a 13-2 run to take a 19 point lead.  It would hit 21 before the Jazz managed some trash time buckets to make the final look more respectable.

When it was over, Jerry Sloan seemed, well... a little down.  "We didn't give them much of a battle, and knowing we're going to have to play them again, it looks pretty bleak. Hate to say it, but it's one of those things."  Clearly he's calling out his team, challenging a slumping team in front of a postseason series in which they'll be big-time underdogs.

I've tried most of the season to believe the Jazz would be the team last year and paper (where games, of course, aren't played) say they should be, but despite a naturally human desire to be correct about things, can't think of any reason to disagree with Sloan.  We'll break down all the ins and outs of the series at length between now and (likely) Sunday, but bottom line?  The Lakers are a much better team.

Breakdown below.

BK

Three Good:

  • Ball Movement:  48 buckets buckets on 39 assists, and save Josh Powell, every Laker notched at least two dimes while gracing the hardwood.  The Lakers are the consensus "NBA's best passing squad," and nights like these prove that dap isn't just hyped chatter.  They also demonstrate how, when the Lakers fire on this specific cylinder, the purple and gold become damn near impossible to beat.
  • Laker "Big" Three: " Big" in the most literal of senses, not the pecking order (before herds of Kobe loyalists slash my tires).  The tallest Lakers did themselves nicely against a Utah frontline they should be able to dominate in the postseason.  Pau Gasol connected on eight of a dozen shots and flirted with a triple double (20/9/6, plus a swat duo).  Andrew Bynum was nearly as clean (8-13) en route to 22 points, and while he's undoubtedly still regaining some spring in his bounce, he was every bit as difficult to neutralize as his Spanish counterpart.  As for Lamar Odom, he chipped in a sweet 16 off the pine via 7-11 shooting, but his real effect was measured in overall impact.  In less than twenty minutes of run, he finished the game an almost comical +28.  Safe to say, good things tended to happen with LO in the game.

I realize the matchup becomes different with Mehmet Okur available for Utah, but unless by "different," you mean "the Earth spinning backwards on its axis, things have gotten so crazy loopy," with all due respect to the Turkish center's talents, I don't see him changing much in the grand scheme of things.  Simply put, the Laker bigs looked much too... well... big
  • Laker Guards with "S" First Names: I had a difficult time choosing between Shannon Brown and Sasha Vujacic for this final spot.  But after a bout of soul searching, I told myself, "AK, you make the damn rules.  Just do whatever the hell you want.  Besides, you already stuck a trio of dudes into the previous slot, so by comparison, you've become more decisive."

Ah, the wonderful world of rationalization!

All joking aside, though, both guys deserved mention and I was happy not just with their production, but how it hopefully signaled a sign of specifics to come in the postseason.  Phil Jackson has continually mentioned Brown as an option to slow down Deron Williams and tonight served as proof positive that the newbie Laker is up for checking the talented and physical All-Star.  "You just gotta do what you gotta do to get him out of his rhythm," explained Brown.  "I try to utilize all my abilities no matter who I'm going against, but with him, you gotta play smart as well.  He knows how to use angles.  How to his body.  You just gotta try to counteract what he does."  And, to some degree, forget that you're battling one of the game's elite players.   "I feel pretty comfortable guarding anybody.  It's basketball."

Toss in nine points and the overall effect of his energy, and the vital role Brown is slated to fill increasingly appears to be a good fit.

For his part, The Machine was decidedly more cyborg than Wall.E (I loved that adorable robot as much as the next guy, but he's kind of a klutz).  6-8 from the field, with a trio of triples on four downtown tries.  The fifteen points capped a generally upward shooting trend in April for Vujacic, the last few games providing even more reason for optimism.

I think, and Sasha agreed, that LO's return to the bench has made a difference, allowing him to decrease his organizational responsibilities and move more frequently without the rock, which has led to cleaner looks.  Just moving more in general, really.  Having watched some recent film, Sasha noticed that he was parked and "waiting," as he put it.  Vujacic's conscientious effort to make guarding him more of a challenge may be paying off as the regular season wraps up.

It's kind of ironic that an increase in motion would serve as a key, because, as most readers know, I've often felt Sasha's worst enemy is a tendency to rush things when either the PT or results aren't to his liking.  That definitely was an issue during second half slump, and the subject of a recent pow wow with The Zen Master.

"A couple of games ago I had a talk with Coach (Jackson) and we touched base.  I was having similar problems my second year with Phil.  I was trying to go for a home run, because I knew I would have (about) four minutes, and then I was going to go out.  But I've just got to be calm.  That's the first thing.  We've got to all give up something.  I'm willing to do that.  I'm going to be on the floor whenever I'm going to be, and I'm going to do my best.  And whenever I'm on the bench, I'm going to be the best teammate possible."

Smart approach by Sasha, one that I hope continues, because it seems to be working.  If the Lakers want to make a successful playoff run, they need Vujacic's outside shot dropping and his play on both sides of the ball under control.  Lately, that's been the case, and I've been growing optimistic that Vujacic may regain his useful form of last season.  And not a moment too soon.

AK

Three Things to Think About:

  • Fouls: Did the refs get a little whistle happy in the first half?  Yes.  Was the free throw disparity, particularly early, a little silly? Probably.  But the Jazz did play a more aggressive brand of ball early on, and the Lakers weren't quite at the same speed.  Sloppiness also played a role.  The Lakers turned the ball over early- 10 in the first half- which helped create foul situations going the other way.  Refs explain some of the numbers, but not all of them.  LA needs to play better defense without fouling.  But for the Jazz, can it be comforting that they went into the break down one despite a +19 free throw advantage on the home team?
  • Turnovers: The Jazz will try to push, because once the Lakers settle into a half court defense it's much tougher to score, particularly with Bynum back.  When they got out on the break, though, Utah was effective.  One way to limit those chances?  Fewer TOs.
  • Penetration: Said PJ, "We got some turnovers at the end of the third, beginning of the fourth quarter and those same situations that changed the ballgame around for us.  Other than that, they were in our faces coming down the lane and we weren't (there) and didn't block many shots.  Second chance opportunities were there for them, and fouls."

Quotes:

Jackson, on LA's offense down the stretch:

"I thought we were really crisp.  Our passing was good.  We had five turnovers in the first quarter which bothered me.  That's too many.  But we adjusted as the game goes on.  Sometimes that takes some time."

On the fouls in the first half:

"That's the way they like to play ball.  They take it as far as they can take it at you, and create a situation like that.  We know that, we just weren't prepared for the energy they came in this ballgame with.  This is their fourth game in five nights, but it tells you something about who they are."

Bynum, on how he felt finishing the regular season:

"It feels great.  I feel well rested.  I am very, very, very excited.  I have never played in an NBA playoff game- well, I played in Phoenix for a minute, but that doesn't really count- I think I have a great chance to help push us over the hump."

Good read AK. This is going to be awesome!!!

Go Lakers!

Well, there's only one question left to be asked. Which Finals matchup will draw higher ratings: LA v. Cleveland, or a rematch of LA v. Boston? Granted, Cleveland is a smaller market than Boston, but you'd have to think that LBJ v. Kobe would dominate the headlines.

Another question: how will this year's championship compare with the championship in 2000? 2000 was the sweetest championship of the Phil Jackson era so far b/c it was our first in over a decade and was pretty unexpected. I have a feeling this year's championship will rival the 2000 one because of all the hardships we have endured over the past few years, particularly the loss to Boston last year.

On the aspect of turnovers, I thought most of it was committed by (as much as it pains me to say this) a lot of lazy passing from Trevor Ariza tonight.

So many of his passes were really really bad passes made on really poor decisions. Hopefully he'll bounce back on Saturday!

EJK

you are way over your head.

take a deep breath we got a tuff first round so lets take things 1 game at a time.

4-1, 4-1, 4-1,4-2.....makes for 16-5 playoff record....that's my call....and in the final series, it'll go the same no matter who...they'll split the first 2, then win 2/3 in the middle, home or on the road, then win in game 6... oh wait a minute, I didn't run this by David Stern to see if that's the final draft for this year's playoffs, so it's just IMHO till then....

hman

Nice post AK... and who do you think will be defending Okur when he comes back?

LAKER GURU FROM INDIA

Which Finals matchup will draw higher ratings: LA v. Cleveland, or a rematch of LA v. Boston? :

- AS LONG AS IT IS LA LAKERS AND KOBE, IT WILL DRAW HIGHER RATINGS.

Another question: how will this year's championship compare with the championship in 2000?

- IT IS BETTER THIS YEAR THAN 2000, WHY? SIMPLY, NO SHAQ WITH A BIG HEADACHE AND A BIG LOAD FOR KOBE AND THE LAKERS TO CARRY ESPECIALLY DURING THE ENDGAMES....

Sweet Sixteen left. Let it begin.

I disagree with Sloan BK for as much as it was a blowout in the end the Jazz were still missing Mehmet Okur (their 3rd leading scorer and perimeter oriented guy which will force one big at least out of the perimeter) and CJ Miles (who is a better upgrade over Matt Hapring).

Both could be not 100% for the series but still they are key components of the Jazz. Not to mention the Jazz were playing at the end of a back to back even though they got some rest from playing the Clippers.

That being said this was a good win for the Lakers and it built momentum for the playoffs, got some good playing time for Bynum and Shannon Brown against a quality opponent and got some valuable rest for the starters.

It's this time now:

WIN OR GO HOME

I'm just ready to get this thing going. If we can get past Portland, I'm predicting we win the championships this year. But again, we MUST get past Portland...

So good to log on and see we won and VERY GOOD TO SEE SASHA HEATING UP!!!!

Luke's 100% on shooting and 5 assists was also very encouraging!!

LETS ROCK THIS HOUSE!!!!

GOOOooOOO LAKERS!!!

Good morning Laker family!

I am ecstatic today. Last night's game was an all-around great game. Utah practically guaranteed themselves a loss after Deron's confrontation with Bynum...Kobe went on the attack and got the killer Mamba look. When he starts chewing his gum hard and fast, you know it's on.
I'm glad the Lakers took the challenge and didn't wimp out to try and get Dallas in the 1st round.

I also have to say that Shannon Brown is getting lot's of love from me. The kid is ridiculously athletic and his defense is much better than Farmar's. Also props to Sasha for getting his stroke back last night.

It's on now...LET'S GET THE PLAYOFFS STARTED BABY!

GO LAKERS!!!!!

A trial was being held one sunny April day to determine who would get temporary custody of a young boy following the divorce of his parents. The judge asked the boy if he wanted to live with his mom.

The reply: "No...she beats me."

"How about your father?" asked the judge.

Again: "No...he beats me too."

After deliberating for a while, the judge decided to send the child to the Utah Jazz.

They can't beat anyone in April.

Yes, that is worse than the chant our "Utah sucks" chant. And yes, Boozer left Cleveland to join the Jazz under much less dire and much more shady circumstances. They seem to be fine with him.

Playoff victory # 1 of 16 this weekend!

Go LAKERS!

This is the best time of the year.

This message is still ringing in the ears of the Jazz, so I decided to repost it. - Fatty

Lakers sent a message to the Jazz tonight, and it was a strong one. When they could have chosen another team for the first round, they made the statement loud and clear for the Jazz to hear.

"We want YOU buddy. Bring it on!"

Posted by: Fatty | April 14, 2009 at 11:24 PM

EJK, I absolutely remember that the first championshhip was very unexpected. No one crowned the Lakers like Boston was crowned last year (endorsement deals before they won anything, only to go 7-7-7-6 in the playoffs).

I think this years will be relieving. He won't acknowledge it, but Phil will be happy to be past Red, without Red criticizing through the media. Kobe will be relieved to be finally past the "win without Shaq" stigma, Fish will be glad to get back, Pau will finally recieve the recognition he deserves, and the rest will be happy to finally get some respect.

Shannon Brown is the new Ron Harper/Randy Brown... I like this guy and he deserves the 2nd string point position. Although it seems that Jordan is mentally affected by the change, I hope he can understand what's happening, that Shannon is just a bigger, stronger and quicker guard and is better suited to go against the bigger PG's in this league. Good luck to Jordan thou, my advice, well my 12 yr old sons advice would be to HUSTLE Jordan just HUSTLE..

Scary that the Lakers can get BETTER throughout the playoffs. Shannon Brown and Bynum are still either learning or getting to midseason form.

By the finals, I hope the guys are on full boil. Imagine Bynum and Gasol attacking in the half court set, having TA and Shannon slashing and Kobe being Kobe. Imagine Shannon, Kobe, and Ariza on a break with Lamar trailing. Better yet, imagine those guys on D. That's a good team.

Time to take care of business in the west.

THE POWER OF THE LUCKY BARSTOOL COMPELS YOU!

35-1... and counting!

That's the good news.

The bad news is that LeBroniacs and passive-aggressive Cleves are conspiring against the lucky barstool. I've got to come up with a plan.

Anyhow...

Shannon Brown continues to impress. What a pleasant surprise!

My gut is telling me that we're going to see big things from Lamar Odom in the playoffs. Everyone's talking about Kobe, Pau, and Andrew, but when the spotlight's off Lamar Odom he seems to play at his best.

I think that's going to happen.

Especially if (IF!) we play the Cavs in the Finals. LeBroniacs are terrified of Lamar Odom. The Cavs simply do not have an answer for him.

LET'S GET THE REAL SEASON STARTED! ONWARDS TO VICTORY!

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

Lakers may have the better prospect ever after the '04 and '08 debacle but I would not read too much on our last game. A veteran Coach Sloan is just reading the Lakers playbook and challenging his team. By Sunday, we will see another kind of Utah, so please don't downplay the Jazz performance in the last few weeks. Starting Sunday, every game is a new competition focused on one team at a time, a game of adjustments, therefore it needs a continuity on energy and success. Stick with the mission not grandstanding or overestimating but plain domination. Domination comes from sharpening skills, doing all the fundamental preparation, discipline on the body and stick with the play that PJ will unveil. Forget all the season's achievements and rankings, the 82 games were mere preparation for the playoffs. This is a brand new series, NBA Championship series begins. I have seen a lot of teams that were favored seeded #1and got eliminated on the first round because the players and coaching staff were not prepared for the pressure of the playoffs. Less talk, no mercy, and remember the Finals that got away in 04 and 08. Just do it LAKERS

Good morning Blog crew!

"We didn't give them much of a battle, knowing we have to play them again," said Utah Coach Jerry Sloan. "It looks pretty bleak. . . .

"They have a terrific team. They have guys who can pass the ball, do about anything you ask a team to do. They've got guys who can make big shots, who just know how to play the game, make the game look simple. . . .

"We're just like a little dent in the road, far as they're concerned. They're very comfortable playing against us and obviously should be."

Good try Jerry. You thought you would use the old, butter them up, act like we can't compete with them, make them overly confident trick. But it wont work, becaue we're to smart and not falling for it Jerry.

#4,

I think we all agree that Jazz fans are classless.

When I heard about the cancer taunting when Derek Fisher was shooting freethrows, I was filled with terrible anger. How could someone do that?

Jazz, Trailblazers, Kings, Pistons, and Celtics fans confuse being a classeless idiot with being a fanatical fan.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!!

GO LAKERS!

Great breakdown, AK. You guys have done an excellent job this season. Thanks for giving the Laker Faithful a place to congregate.

The Jazz didn't look like an uber-physical team last night. When Deron Williams slammed into Bynum, it looked like it might have hurt him a little bit. Bynum's a big guy.

My favorite moment of the night? Sasha winning the jump ball against Deron Williams. That will probably give D. Will nightmares for a week. At least until Sunday, when he'll have new nightmare material.

Go Lake Show!

Kind of a letdown to be playing the Jazz AGAIN. It would be nice to see someone different.

I do agree with Phil though: ". . . it'd be good for us actually to play a physical team. That's what you have to play in the playoffs and they bring it every night." Hopefully they will help us work into playoff shape.

They were playing on the road, their 4 game in 5 nights without Okur so please be ready for a better effort from them Sunday.

At times last night our defense seemed to be either foul them or hope they miss the layup/dunk.

It's playoff time.

Let's Go Lakers!!!

Take it easy. I don't like this matchup with jazz. This is not a typical 1 to 8 matchup. The lakers have there work cut out for them.

omega:

i agree no one should be counting chickens at this point, but jeez, you make it sound like we have a first-round date with the '04 pistons rather than the team we just blew out last night. unless our lakers start forgetting all the lessons they've learned from last year's playoff run and this long season, i think the road to the finals is pretty clear. but as in all things, one step at a time.

In looking ahead to the first rounds series, here's a couple things I noticed last night about the match-up.

Except for at the PG position, I'm not seeing this disparity in toughness or being physical that everyone is assuming Utah is going to have. I've heard it and read about it. But I didn't actually see it on the floor. What I saw is that the Lakers are bigger and, in most cases, stronger. If anyone was doing the pushing it was the Lakers, and when Utah tried to push, the Lakers didn't budge. What I noticed last night was the Lakers frontline looks like they've all hit the weight room hard this season. Drew, LO and even Pau are physically stronger than they were in the past. Drew looks bigger than he did before he went down. I suspect he kept on whatever upper body weight training he could that he didn't need his legs for. Bottom line, the front line is a quantum leap more physical than it was last year w/ Pau, LO and Ronny.

We hear Utah and Jerry Sloan and assume it's going to be a pick-n-roll fest. It's not. Utah's offense seems to be predicated on getting key players open by operating behind the defense (trying to catch defenders looking at the ball-handler). Lots of little back-picks and a whole slew of direction changes on cuts in an effort to lose their defenders. Bottom line is that the Lakers need to keep an eye on their man and stay relatively close to them rather than "tracking" them the way they normally do.

I think D-Will must've heard all the Shannon Brown "D-Will stopper" talk b/c he got way more energetic when Hops came into the game. The only real advantage Utah had last year was D-Will getting Fish into foul trouble and then thoroughly abusing Farmar. It's a different story this year. Brown can just be much more physical and, if Deron is going to have to work much harder this year to get the same production. I think PJ will throw a little Sasha, Kobe and Ariza at him at times as well.

Edwin Gueco,

I think the first game of the series will be rather telling. We should expect the Jazz to play with brutal intensity because they know that if they lose the first game then they've already lost the psychological war.

So Game One is going to be tough. We better be ready for it.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

When the Lakers are playing any where near their potential, they're the "amazing" the NBA advertises.

One thing is certain: Mitch K. has done his job.

One other thing about last night's game I noticed:

We're all singing the praises of Shannon Brown, me included. However, beyond his size, the leg up he has on Farmar is he plays a much more disciplined game and doesn't make nearly as many mistakes with the ball that Jordan does. But, last night Shannon was probably his most comfortable on the floor and, thus, showed some signs of playing a little less disciplined resulting in some turnovers and ill-advised shots. Hopefully, he won't go to the darkside.

The issue isn't Brown shutting down Williams- nobody does that, because Williams is too good- but that Shannon can help make things a little tougher. Maybe there are handful of trips in a game where Williams can't turn the corner on a drive, or where he's forced a foot or two wider and help can come and alter the shot. Could that be worth three points? Four? Five? Six? That's a massive difference.

But the idea that anyone can come into a game and make Williams disappear consistently isn't fair. Just as it was last night, Williams will get into the lane. It's a matter of how hard the job is made for him.

That, and how well the Lakers limit Utah's chances to get out in transition...

BK

New thread please ... what do they play for ... what do we blog for ... RINGS baby ...

I liked DWill charging into Bynum. That was hilarious and stupid at the same time. Stockton would do the same thing, but man did I respect his subtley and tact at being dirty.

I think the Jazz and the rest of the league will always be trying to answer the question "who's tougher" but the Lakers will always answer the question "who plays better basketball" first.

Olf,

"Kind of a letdown to be playing the Jazz AGAIN. It would be nice to see someone different"

I feel u dog ... I'm hoping we get portland or new orleans in the second round ...

The west should be used to prepare us for the finals ... so here's hoping roy/cp3 bring their A* game if we run into them ... actually I want roy ... he a bad boy on a bad team ... and u know what we do with bad boys? ... we feed them to the beast ....

Bynum where u @ yo ... much love for making it back yo, they call u franchise ... i call u kobe's legs ... it's all good dawg

I cant contain my joy y'all ... the playoffs is hurr yo ... dont forget the hurt boston put on us, this is our shot at redemption

Sweet victory. However, it signifies nothing. I expect the first round of playoffs to go 6 games. I don't think we'll win in Utah until we close it out there. They are too physical, like PJ said they take it right to the point that they can take it (just like a Sloan-coached team has always done). This will lead to late-game foul shots for LA at home, but not on the road. I expect they won't fold for every thrid quater, either.

Shannon Brown is making a believer out of me. When Starbury was the hype of the league rumor mill and we quietly shot out astronaut into space, we recieved that which we have been searching for, a physical defense-minded guard. He and Farmar match up pretty well with whatever type of guard is thrown at us: bruiser-type (a la Billups and Williams) you go woth Brown, quick and agile (like Parker or CP 3) you call Farmar's number. If one of them is on fire, leave himin, if one is struggling, switch 'em out.

As always, it seems as if the planets align for Mr. Jackson and his playoff rotation. The only thing is how are we going to find DJ some big-time minutes? Kidding.

Well, now we just have to finish out the work week, kick it on Saturday and then Sunday it's on.

GO LAKERS!!!!!

BK,

Nice analysis of the Shannon Brown "D-Will Stopper" situation.

Maybe we should start referring to Shannon Brown as "D-Will Slower" or D-Will Yield Sign Acknowledger" or "D-Will Significant Speed Bump" or something like that.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

i totally agree. also, it was the first position when shannon defended DW who had that 3pt, changed to 2pt shot. the replay, showed in close up that shannon had his hand in deron's face. and that reminded me how some commentators say about great defensive plays: great or perfect defense but even better offense. many times they refer that to kobe's shots that can be un-defendable.

I think people are also missing the fact that with Shannon, a strong guard with a 7 foot wingspan, we can switch virtually all perimeter positions. Kobe, Trevor, Sasha, and Shannon all have about the same size. Even with Luke in there, there is excellent size and help out there.

>before herds of Kobe loyalists slash my tires

We prefer "hordes." More manly, less of an implication of sheep...

"hordes of Kobe loyalists" ... now people are tremblin' ....

lakers_sth

i am aware that shannon can be a little prone to distracted plays. at the same time, last night he was advertised like the DW stopper, so i'm sure he was a little pressured. a few more games with meaningful minutes, and not big dunks in garbage time that he was used too, will give him more confidence.

also it helps that he is playing with the starters and understands his role as distributor.

visually, it is a pleasure (for me personally) to see him bring the ball up court and the way he moves. has a little swagger and that expectation that he can surprise with rhythm changes. got swing?

Good morning fellow Laker fans.

I say for us to be the best we must beat the best so bring them on!!! Barkley, Webber and many others thought that either the Lakers would tank the game or the Jazz would just flat out beat us so that we wouldn't have to face the Jazz in the first round. If the Lakers clearly feel like they're the best and believe in their system, they should fear no team. It seems like Barkley and others always say this and that about the Jazz while not giving the Lakers their proper due for being the top seed in the West these past two seasons. Bring on the Jazz, Blazers and any other team because I believe the Lakers are ready this time around. Only Kenny Smith has any real say when it comes to championship talk because Barkley and C-Webb never won anything.

Good morning,

What a nice 2nd half. Jerry Sloan has his work cut out for him. Haha!

Meanwhile, the Thuggets continue their shameless ways:

http://tinyurl.com/cvz4tn

Good luck to Joe Maloof in getting that apology he's demanding.

So Drew says he is very, very, very excited and has not played in the playoffs but he actually is in his 4th season as a Laker and he got quite a few minutes against the Suns in 07 first round. Was he that forgettable? Did that precede the "ship his arse out" comment? This could be the year that Drew dominates, no one can match up with him, let alone he AND Pau. Watching his progress in just the last 4 games has been remarkable. His competitiveness is great to see. The "bump" on Deron after the made bucket. Sweet. If he can avoid foul trouble, look out below!!

Let's Get IT Started!!

Well, the prologue is over and it's time to get down to the real season. I wasn't looking to play Utah, but like Kobe and PJ said, it might be good to have a tough, physical series right out the gate.

Don't be fooled by Sloan or last nights victory, Utah will give us a tough battle, especially in Utah. I hope we can get one there so this thing ends in 5. The good news for us, is even if it's a tougher, longer series than we hope, we have the depth this year to deal with it.

Having AB back, along with a healthy Ariza and possibly a new spark in Brown gives this years Laker playoff team much more depth, versatility and experience than last year. This is our year, now it's time to go out there and JUST DO IT!!!!

It starts with Mamba, it's in his hands to take this squad to the promised land. This is his moment to show the basketball world that he is not only the best basketball player on the planet, but that he can take his team to a title. It's really the last step that will cement his legacy.

The supporting cast looks ready and willing at this point. AB is shaking off the rust. Looks like his offensive touch is coming back quicker than his Defense. He's not blocking shots or dominating the glass yet, these are the things we're gonna need down the road, I'm sure PJ and the staff will really emphasize this in the coming days.

Sasha getting his groove back is very good to see. I've been saying that he needs to get more floor time with Kobe and the starters, hopefully we'll be seeing some of that in the playoffs. HIs ability to hit shots makes us a lethal offensive team. Ariza is not a shooter and though i love what he gives us in terms of D and athletic ability, certain situations dictate us having shooters on the floor.

Bottom line is we've got everything we want in terms of health and cohesiveness going into the title push. We have the potential to start a new dynasty this year. Gotta get the first one before we can even talk about it, but it's there for us. Nothing better than this if your a Laker fan. Is it Sunday yet?

Jon K, here are my observations of our Lakers lately.

LO is on the way up with his new found shooting touch in the mid range but free throw shooting should be 70% i.e. 7 out of 10;

Kobe is a little bit tired, his FT shooting need to improve more b/c that's a Laker weapon, 30% of his points comes from F/T's. His mid range jump shots are clanking due to heavy guarding, need to make those assist pass more productive to an open Luke, open LO by driving them to the hoop when open. Kobe is not only the most valuable player of the team but the best decoy out there.

Fisher has been missing a lot of three point shots, we need the bull dog to sharpen his .04 scope for the playoffs. We have few marksmen in Laker lineup and the fish is our line navy seal.

Bynum relies too much on dunking, got to mix other repertoire like the hook shot, mid jump shot, bank shots. Alley hoop shots are great but dangerous in exposing oneself to injuries after sometime b/c there are always Trevor-typed of defense whether it is Boozer, Prysbilla or Hilario that may hurt Socks if he used it constantly. Alley hoop is regarded as an insult to other team's defense.

Sasha is getting back his confidence on those perimeter shooting but he's always anxious and super excited when he has the ball. This is his 4th season, by this time he knows what referees are calling for fouls. In this playoff, we need a cool-collected assassin Sasha.

Ariza has been producing single digit scoring lately, he has to get back to the habit of double digit per game by breaking down his attacks per quarter. I want to dream of Ariza as the resurrection Jamaal Wilkes.

Gasol is our steady Spaniard, smart with his pivots, now we need his long hands for defense too. What a great sight if he will complement with Drew or LO as a second defender to avoid fouls in those block shots. Constant practice will make those strategies work in actual play.

Shannon Brown is the new star, keep those prospects bright by sticking with the plan.

Luke has been making good strides in distributing the ball, that is his forte' Communication is the key to execute those complicated passes. Constant practice will eliminate surprises and T/O's with those blind or close links. He may have the best IQ player but it will be wasted if others could not perceive what he is thinking.

We need Farmar to excel in these playoffs for Lakers to win it all. We need his last second shooting heroics and controlled speed because the speed that thrills, is the speed that spoils Farmar's decision-making as a PG.

Lastly, the real yeomen, blue collars, plumbers, linemen, diggers - Mbenga, Powell and Morrison we need your valuable contribution even only for short minutes, make the most out of it.

It seems the laker fans have thrown in the towel for a 2nd straight mvp for kobey - those chants when he shot FTs were the most anemic I have ever heard.

Just goes to show how difficult it is to garner the award two years in a row, like Nash and MJ achieved.

As a testament to how great Nash is, one must remember that he won it while playing in the same division as the so-called best playa in the world. Now that's greatness!

Oh come now "D-Will" stopper for Shannon Brown may just be over the line. It is hard to stop Deron Williams especially with that bull-dog type body and his killer crossover and an underrated jumper.

And don't forget about the presence of Andrew Bynum also altered his shots/changed his penetration.

That being said Shannon Brown was the most effective defender on D-Will. Fish played good D on Williams after the 2nd half. Farmar as usual faltered till the end when he wasn't guarding D-Will as much (Sasha was on Deron while Farmar had Knight which he also struggled defensively).

Shannon for most part made D-Will's job more harder than Fish and especially Farmar. Sure D-Will still scored/passed for an assists while being defended by SB but it was no doubt harder. First possession against SB Deron Williams constantly tried to use his deadly dribble moves to get back Shannon but couldn't and instead settled for a jumper. He made it of course but hey a jumper from him is better off than him in the lane where he can do worst damage.

I'm glad the playoff rotations will be here to make minutes less for not as productive guys like Farmar. More Shannon Brown hopefully (though no doubt more minutes for Fish since this is the playoffs).

Big PROPS to the bench for stepping up. Having two playmakers (3 if Pau is with them) helps a TON and Sasha I still have reservations but he is heating up. Walton may not be a consistent scorer but he does get the ball to the sweet places of the players most times (Hint: most does not mean all the time since he does have bad passes as well) and Odom is also a good passer so the bench is practically it's own team once again. Less reliant on Jordan Farmar's penetration and instead on TEAM passing. Get the ball out of Jordan's hands and well more success for the bench.

39 assists speaks for itself.

lakers_sth,

"Drew looks bigger than he did before he went down. I suspect he kept on whatever upper body weight training he could that he didn't need his legs for."

I gotta try that bunny lifting regimen...

I'd like to see Drew work to strengthen his base so that he can establish better low post position. He seems to get pushed out of the post frequently and have to back his man down more than he would like.
