Talking with: Josh Powell

March 7, 2009 | 10:59 am

On a minute-to-minute basis, there's probably nobody on the Lakers' roster who has better taken advantage of his playing time than Josh Powell.  Brought in to fill a backup power forward role when Ronny Turiaf left for Golden State, Powell hasn't matched Turiaf's level of enthusiasm on and off the floor- who could?- but from a production standpoint has been effective, utlizing a solid face up game Josh_powell offensively and a willingness to hit the boards on both ends.

Bottom line, dude works his ass off.

In Friday's win over the Timberwolves
, Powell hit for 14 points on 6-11 from the floor, and added six boards and three blocks in one of his best performances of the season.  Powell isn't the chattiest of fellows (I've joked that he speaks less English than Sun), but talked to us after the game.

Q: It seems like as the year has gone on, your level of comfort both offensively and defensively has increased a lot.  How long does it take to get acclimated to a new system and team?

Josh Powell: It just comes with staying consistent and doing the same things I've been doing every day. I think the opportunity is there more because we understand that with (Andrew Bynum) being out, everyone is going to have to step up and fill that void.  So I think everyone's just thinking the same thing.  Just keep going hard in practice, and picking up on the game schemes, then bring it to the court.

Q: Does it take time for guys to understand what you can do, and the areas where you can contribute?  Your face up game, for example, or the pick and pop?

Powell: Yeah.  Really it's the opportunity.  We're getting more familiar with guys, knowing what works, what's going to put your teammate in the best situation and where our strong points are from the first group to the second group.  The more we play together, the more comfortable we are.

Q: You were playing in this building last year, but down the hall a little (with the Clippers).  Do you ever think about what a difference a year can make?

Powell: The thing about last year, it was my first real, true chance to get an opportunity to play.  So I'm very thankful for that. Unfortunately, we had some injuries, but that enabled me to start and I was getting heavy minutes, so I was able to show what I can do.

Q: You've been a guy who has often had to be effective in short minutes.  For a lot of other players, playing in limited stints can lead to trying to do too much.  How do you avoid that urge?

Powell: Because I understand my role.  I know the things that I can control defensively.  Rebounding, playing with energy, making the hustle plays.  Being in the right spot on the offensive side.  So when the opportunity comes you have to make the most of it.  I know my strengths, picking and popping, and if I get a drop off I have to finish it.  Or go to the boards.  That's something I've always done.

Q: But you know your game won't be judged purely on a stat line?

Powell: I would hope not.  This team is different.  The coaches are very understanding and they know what they want you to do.  For some of us, we have to come into the game in spurts and have good minutes, whether it's three to four minutes or we play six to eight minutes.  It just depends.  But we all know that we have to come in and be professionals.

Q: It must take a certain kind of discipline, though, for a guy who has had your career path (Powell was undrafted out o NC State, has spent time in the D-League, and played for four other NBA teams in three seasons before joining the Lakers), who hasn't played on long term contracts or seen a lot of stability, to keep that mentality avoid pressing and forcing things.

Powell: I think it's just, for one, having a positive mindset about everything.  Two, my hunger.  Being hungry all the time and dedicated to what I do and give it my all.  That's the only thing I can do and can control.  I can't control my minutes, I can't control what happens, even during the game.  So I don't even try to.

Must say I'm suprised you guys were able to interview the dude. He seems not only shy but gun shy lol.

In any case, good read and as always thank you!

Well now Powell's showing what he can do for us and the rest of the league. So his value has gone up, people see his strengths, and he should find a more permanent job either with the Lakers or whoever, instead of going from team to team like he has in the past.

"Two, my hunger. Being hungry all the time and dedicated to what I do and give it my all. "

That really impressed me...the young man works hard...and for a reason...good things to you, Josh...

Thanks for the shout-out, longtime...let's keep the intensity, and push for seventy...

I like that Powell doesn't talk a lot, just does his business. Same with Ariza... these guys bring a work ethic, aren't about entitlement, don't complain.

This guy's a definite keeper.

Thanks for posting this BK.

Nice to see a hard working seemingly down to earth dudes (Powell & Mbenga) having some success.

It does make Shaq's latest blather seem small & petty. (Sorry, I told myself I was going to put aside my dislike of Shaq after we beat down Phx at home. But the guy won't shut up.)

GO LAKERS!!!

there's an interview on Lakers.com with Powell talking about his favorite music and he said he's also a very musical person, can play several instruments. Sorry I dont have time to find the link right now.

wes,

21 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The countdown is on.

--Posted by: dan the man

Yes DTM, countdown is on. That's March 28th in my book, with my golden rings. That's basically a week each of the treadmill, light practice and hard practice. And that should be enough time to get back on the court.

He should be back for the Hawks, or half way thru that monster 7 game road trip at the end of the year.

Wes

Good Afternoon Charles....Good Afternoon Everyone...

great to see a blow out, especially against Herman "soon to be unemployed, shouldn't have done collusion" Munster..

Powell is really playing well and is a great asset to this team..

wish his drive and hussle would rub off on Lamar a little---I think we need to convince Lamar that every week is the week before the trade deadline...

Ariza still looks lost and out of sync---what the hell happened to him? hopefully he gets back his mojo (see Dr. Evil for that maybe)...

Mmmmbenga continues to be Mmmmblocka and his shot is no fluke seemingly---great to see him play so well indeed...

extremely cool to see someone get multiple blocks on the same play---that's called not giving up on the play boy (said Foghorn Leghorn)...

my son pointed out that Morrison always looks like he is wondering what is going on--I added, yeah, it looks like he just woke up and is trying to figure out where he is and what is doing there--just his facial expression, haven't seen enough basketball playing to see if that carries over in his play or not...

Brown may just turn out to be quite a pick up, wonder if he will be able to stay around next year etc.

50 feels real good at this time of year I must say...

"I roll a stoney"

"have I or have I not covered vaginal juices?"

AS ALWAYS, AS EVER, YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY (AND SEASON) TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!

GO LAKERS !!!

This guy is great for a championship team, not just a team. It's great to see him rewarded for his strong contribution and to see how nicely he fits on Kobe's team.

He and Ariza are really not f'ing around.

dave m,

Are you saying you don't enjoy the antics of our loquacious former franchise center? lol

I can't imagine how difficult it must be for a guy like Powell not knowing where his next paycheck is coming from, so to speak, but he certainly shows his value on the boards if nothing else. An outing like last night was just gravy. To me, he's a great replacement for Ronny, even though I miss the guy and his personality. Josh seems like a better scorer than Turiaf was for us. (I haven't checked their PER, so I could be wrong.) Like Trevor and DJ last night, Powell's quiet professionalism impresses me. With those three coming off the bench we're going to have energetic play.

Re: Powell. Can you imagine how it is for his family? haha.

In the interets of fairness (I'm always talking about how the media just loves Luke and won't stop talking about him), here's an article I found today about Sasha:
http://tinyurl.com/dgjnk7

Pesky media, always one up-ing me lol.

I find it curios that 2 minutes more could do that much of a difference in terms of Sasha's shooting. I think it's far more likely he's been hampered by injuries and confidence than any such "minutes." Although you won't find me arguing against playing him with Kobe. No siree.

If Luke had the hunger that Powell had for the game he would be respected for his hard work and not for his HOF Dad! Luke sucks a$$!

Faith,

It's interesting that you mentioned the Sasha article in the Times, because when I asked Powell the question about avoiding the urge to cram as much "game" into limited minutes, I was specifically thinking about Sasha. (That should come as no surprise, as I've often said it's one of his weaknesses.)

I agree that injuries have played a role in Sasha's struggles. But the minutes are without question a factor as well. Not because I disagree that two extra minutes aren't a big deal. I think you're absolutely correct. The problem is that SASHA sees it as a big deal. He talks constantly about his minutes, how much they help him succeed, that he equates minutes with a coach's confidence, etc. And this has created a vicious circle his entire career. Sasha tries to "play his way" into bigger minutes, which means trying to "make more happen" within a smaller time frame, which typically leads to hyperactive play and poor decisions, which ironically leads to fewer minutes.

Bottom line, Sasha needs to understand (or maybe just accept) that he'll help the team more by simply doing a solid job in a specific role than coming up short while shooting for the moon. I'm not saying he shouldn't strive to be the best player possible. That goes without saying. But honestly, he'd help himself more in that goal by simply relaxing and not worrying about the "tangible" results so much. He's trying too hard to do too much.

Sasha really could benefit by taking a page from Powell's book. One of the reasons Josh has done well, beyond the hustle, effort, whatever talent, etc., is that he focuses solely on doing his job, as opposed to "impressing," if that makes any sense. He gets his role and doesn't try to do anything beyond it. That's a good thing. Solid work is an often underrated commodity.

AKvv

AK/BK

thanks for putting a face to the anonymous bench

Xodus - Hahaha! Well, the Big Loquacious, was like you said - franchise. Powell, Ariza and Mbenga are lunchbucket. That said, the guy that brought us three rings is now doing everything he can to stay relevant - having a good season and letting everyone know it. Meanwhile, the lunchbucket squad's gonna help bring us another ring!

AK - nice take on Sasha. As for him taking a page from Powell's book, I doubt it will happen. At least not over any period of time. Sasha might try to rein it in now and then but it's kind of like Dr. Strangelove's arm.

AK

good point about sasha. re: doing his job and not "impressing". that goes back for each player understanding their ROLE as part of the TEAM. unfortunately the "impressing" list is comprised of LO, JF, SV and partially TA. on a positive note Didier and Shannon were "impressive" last night, playing their ROLE.

compared to movies, that will be Soldier #7 trying to fight for the Best Supporting Actor, or sometimes, especially with JF for Best Actor.

isn't it "ironically funny" that last night the game became FUN in the last 7 minutes as soon as JF's a$$ got glued to the bench: pouting, not even cheering for his teammates, at a time when the starters where having a blast and enjoying every moment of it.

"insecurities"?

I believe your exact words were "channeling his inner Tim Thomas" haha.

And yeah I agree. He needs to stop pressing and just do. I think he knows that and has tried to do as much as possible of that lately...which imo can be attributed to his good play of late shot or no shot. Those passes to Powell and Didier hasn't hurt the team. I believe Joel's exact words were "he's been playing real well as a lead guard, even though he's not the lead guard." Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see that all that often, he's just not equipped for it lol, but it's nice to see him channel something else for a change when his shot is not droppin like it's hot.

Of course that'll change now that his ankle is all the better. And since we're talking about confidence I also have to give credit to PJ. He could have gone and done what he has done to Vlad in terms of media criticism etc, and totally undermine Sasha's confidence but he hasn't. Part of that might be because at least Sasha is trying/doing other things but knowing PJ's history, it's still something that should be put into the "positive pile." A much more positive Sasha, productive (hopefully it continues) is always a good thing.

When Bynum does return, it has to be as a bench player.

He must.

And this is a good thing. He'll learn about playoff basketball with out having to shoulder the responsibilities of a starter for a championship level team. He hasn’t even had a playoff run of any consequence to learn from.

Too much responsibility to trust in the young guy’s hands.

And as a second unit guy, he'll really make that whole unit a 1000X better, he’ll learn, and next year he’ll be ready to start; one thinks.

And Farmar, Sasha, Ariza; all those guys are going to praise Heaven the day Bynum returns as one of the bench mob. I see many, many wide open shots on the perimeter. He’ll be the boost the 2nd unit lost when Lamar and Walton started starting.

3 weeks and counting. It may be a fantasy but I’m sticking with it.

Wes

21 Days?

Is that business days? Excluding state and religious holidays?

Which states and which religions?

We need production from both Mbenga and S. Brown for this title chase to work.

Our last three subtractions from the team have all been of the "big" variety, i.e., 6-9 Turiaf, 6-10 Vlad and 7 foot Mihm.

All big, all gone.

So we need Mbenga to play and we need him to play big. He should have 20 solid minutes a night, and when he gets them he needs to be consistent.

And if Brown can go a hard, defensive minded 10 min a night, when the other team starts to make their run, when we need to shut down penetration from the perimeter, then we can put him in for some run and he can help too.

Any ideas on who the shooter is we'll be going after in the offseason?

Wes

Wes

21 days.

All holidays paid and included.

No beer sales on Sunday, unfortunately. Like here in Indiana.

I think the first game of my predicted Bynum comeback is Sunday the 29th.

Invite the gang, 'cause he'll be there.

Wes

Wes asked, "Any ideas on who the shooter is we'll be going after in the offseason?"

Why, Mike Penberthy of course!

2 minutes IS a significant amount for a young player like Sasha who is still learning the game, and who didn't get any training camp, when that two minutes is taken away from what was already a relatively small number.

Josh Powell is a keeper.

I'm hoping the same is also true of Shannon Brown.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

I think Powell has been just what this team needed in the absence of Ronny....How would it be for Ronny...Imagine going from a schnitzel parmigiana to just a plain schnitzel...
He must have regrets...Is the money worth the junk yard he put himself into?......

As for Terrell Owens.....Thank the lord that he did not end up in GreenBay........But the poor people of Baffalo ........I feel for you.....I really do

CB - no prob. I think about the fact that you're stuck in such a homer state, and being stuck in such a homer state too, I feel for you, man.

Portland, DEN and PHO (not to mention BOS) have some of the worst announcers I've ever heard. And it sounds like POR fans are even worse. I hope we kick the crap out of the TB's and shut their fans up.

Long lay off between games - good for the team though, so guess I won't complain too much about my Lakers fix.

HAHA - Butler - ran into a total Lakers fan here in your valley of the sun. He's always lived in AZ but decided in about 3rd grade he was a Laker fan. BTW - your Suns are on the losing end of a streak. Even though I hate the Suns I felt a little bit sorry for you because you love your team so much.

Somebody needs to slap Sasha every time he mentions "minutes" to the media.

Maybe that'll help!

"If I get 20 minutes a game, I'm comfortable!"

Dude, you are playing 17 a game! WTF!

How long has Sasha been in the league? If he can't get with the program soon then it'll be time to claim "old dog, old tricks" story with his career....Hopefully he figure it out.

Just play dude. You arent getting cut!

Sasha and Farmar are getting on my nerves for having poor attitudes.

Take a lesson from Lamar.

There are lessons to be learned right in front of you, but you are blind as a bat and deaf as post!

Great point, Andy. Role players especially have to play within their capabilities. Like Josh said, everybody has been given a role by Phil and the coaches and their job is to go out there as professionals and execute. One of Phil’s strengths has always been putting players in positions where they could succeed, where their strong points can prevail.

Phil has also usually done an excellent job of managing players who think they should have a bigger role or that the way their role has been defined is limiting them, which is a partly the problem currently plaguing Sasha as well as Jordan to a certain extent. Both guys want to be starters and primarily scorers, even though they are not yet ready.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Powell and Mbenga as we move forward. No matter what, they’re definitely more evidence of the Lakers great depth.

Tom

For those two "professionals" I was talking about earlier,

I think the Lakers have proved by action that they are a world class organization over the years. They've stretched that "cold-hearted professionalist business model" to help others. We can look at how they went above and beyond to help Ronnie overcome his heart situation. They've acted with compassion and they've said the right things.

Unless you know for sure theirs some shady things going on with the employees or the Doc (Buss), be it in their system or their own personal actions, you are a Laker and you have a chance to be a part of the Laker family, above and beyond the business side of it. So, time to grow up young fellas.

That rant got me thinking... giving youngins (maybe any person as well) too much stifles their maturity growth. (It's probably just more apparent with kids because we have no older fella ;-), arguably, to judge the old guys of this world)

This also reminded me of some old Chinese/Taiwanese culture. So, FYI back maybe 40 or 50 years ago lots of children gave their wages to their parents.

Red light Utah is on the rise
I had a dream we lost to them in the western confrense finals

Jon K.

The biggest reason why you like Josh Powell so much is because he's a former Clipper.

Korey,

I agree with you dude. He's close to averaging 20 minutes yet complains it isn't enough? When he did average 20 minutes for a month this season (January because of Farmar's injury) he did manage to get around 7 points per game but at very poor percentages at 36% overall and 33% from 3 point land.

He just needs to cool down and realize that in the end it matters that the *team* got the win, not how much his total points are.

-KB Blitz

I hate to state the obvious but nowhere in there has he said, or in interviews for that matter that the "team" winning isn't upmost.

All he's saying is offensively he hasn't been "on" as much because of the minutes, injuries as such. But and I quote, "as long as we're winning, it's the most important thing."

http://tinyurl.com/avpjtw

It seems like the "problem attitudes" of late are coming from the bench players. Farmar, Sasha.
LO had a problem attitude when he was on the bench too, it just was not highly public but then he got going as a starter.
Its good if Brown can start pushing Farmar for minutes in a little bit of internal competition.
How Farmar deals with the internal compeitition will say a lot about him. He dealt w/the threat of Critt in a positive way.
Sasha has to realize that he is the backup to the current best basketball player in the world. What kind of minutes does he expect in that role?
And this year, Lakers are playing less small ball, so the 3 guard lineup w/c got Sasha minutes last year is less often used by PJ. The improvements in the play of Ariza, Luke and even Odom have decreased the need for the 3 guard lineup. When Bynum comes back, there will even be less of a need for the small ball.
Next year, if Morrison turns out to be a useful shooter, Sasha's minutes might go down even more.
Meanwhile, Ariza, Powell and Mbenga have been keeping a positive attitude from the bench and not complaining about their minutes.
When Bynum comes back and PJ decides he plays from the bench, it will be interesting to see how his atiitude will be. Or if Odom or Luke go back to the bench, it will also be interesting to see how they react.
That is one problem the Lakers seem to have compared to Boston, Crabs or Spurs. The bench players from these teams seem to all know their roles. Even Starbury so far is behaving.

Faith-

I think he's very frustrated, and trying very hard to work through the conflicting desires to get more PT and play in a way he'd like with the need to fit in and be part of a winning team. He definitely wants to win. No question. He doesn't want to undermine the team. He also wants to play, and he wants to score. When I talked to him last week for a while after practice, to his credit he was trying to say the right thing- it was hard- but was very obviously not pleased with the situation.

It's a struggle, especially for Sasha who has trouble a) controlling his emotions, and b) holding his tongue. But how much he's playing is very obviously at the front of his mind. He's shown signs of breaking from his slump, but the bottom line is that for Sasha to play more, he has to play better.

Right now, there's still probably a gap between how good Sasha is, and how good he thinks he is. But if he can figure it out and learn to work through his current circumstances, he'll have a chance to emerge as a better player.

BK

The biggest plus with Powell is the short jumper game. With our offense, since the days of Shaq -- a big guy who can hit the short jumpers takes the pressure off Kobe on the outside, and Shaq/Pau/Andrew on the inside. When Malone was not hurt, his short jumper game made us deadly. That goes away, and we struggle. Those shots have always been open in this offense, and when Luke hits them, when Brian Cook would hit them a bit, it opens the floodgates. I would not be against Powell getting more prime-time as he's started to establish this valuable niche ...

As emotional as Sasha can be, he's coachable and I think that helps his case enormously.

Ugh I feel like I'm saying it wrong.

Sasha is not grumbling about playing time so much as explaining his slump.

This isn't a situation in which he gets pulled from the game and then goes mano-e-mano against PJ about playing time.

Totally different.

Good points BK, not pleased is far from being a mal-content. He's pressing true, but he's also being a team guy and playing like a team player, saying things like a team player.

Also BK, I totally get what you mean in terms of "how good he thinks he is, can be et al." I think Sasha had preconceived notions on how much better he can play this year, and how he can show he deserved that contract...but has thus far fallen short of that. Hence the frustration. Which is not to say he's not frustrated about the playing time, but there's a difference between being frustrated about minutes and being a cancer/malcontent in the bench. Of which he is not. Especially since that's the last thing we need.

Kobeblitz,

"The biggest reason why you like Josh Powell so much is because he's a former Clipper."

Dude, sometimes for a relatively intelligent person you are an absolute arrogant moron.

Get a grip.

Your wife needs to smack you in the face.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

I have said this before and I'll say this again, josh Powell is the 2k9 version of Horace grant. He has the same midrange game of the former Chicago bulls player. He"s definetly a keeper. I just hope we get to re-sign him. -jc Garcia-

Lamar,

Break out of your slump.

We need you.

Be a man, darn it.

We don't want you shrinking in a championship game like last year.

Hey all you people getting down on Sasha, calm down. Machine
will be fine by playoff time.

In case you haven't noticed, Sasha is hitting 45% of his shots
and 46% of his 3-pointers this month. He was recently interviewed
and indicated that his recent improvement was because he had
been playing on a sore ankle for awhile. And remember he
also had back problems in January.

Now Machine is healthy. In few more games you will not talk
about Machine's needy interview talk. You will raving about
Machine's many 3-pointers to slay Portland and Texas two-steppie.

Machine.

Great comments, Laker fans! Powelll rose to the occasion against the Rockets. He's all business. That leads to consistency. I respect players like he and Ariza. They focus on the game, not the referees or personalities on the other team.

I'd like to see Sasha put more arch on his shots and start with a two point shot to get his rhythm. Shannon Brown deserves a chance of guarding some of the quick point guards. Can you Say Tony Parker? The Portland ball handlers were blowing by Derrick and Jordan. This will be an issue down the road. We have to stop dribble penetration!!
