Lakers 117, Bulls 109: Seconds, please

As the old expression goes, it's not how you start but how you finish.  Certainly that's the tack the Lakers Jordan_farmar_scored_13_points_agai took Saturday night in Chicago, overcoming a weak first half and taking control in the fourth quarter to beat the Bulls 117-109, a rousing launch to their epic, seven game trip. (I hear they're printing up tour t-shirts.)

The Lakers came out of the locker room after the break and cut a 14 point Bulls lead to one after a Trevor Ariza triple at the seven minute mark, then again following a Kobe Bryant dunk with 6:33 to go in the third. Unfortunately, Chicago regained a touch of momentum over the next few minutes and finished the frame up by six.

Enter the reserves to start the fourth (and final) quarter.  On the live blog, there was tension as fans typed with one hand and huffed into a paper bag with the other.  Nail biting.  A palpable lack of confidence, to say the least.

All, as it turns out, totally undeserved.  In a decidedly redemptive performance, easily the strongest burn for that group in a while, the unit of Lamar Odom, Jordan Farmar, Luke Walton, Josh Powell, and Sasha Vujacic blew the Bulls out of the water to the tune of a 21-6 run before Kobe and Pau Gasol re-entered the game with 6:24 to play.

Everyone got involved.  Walton had two good buckets in the post, including a converted and-one as he took advantage of smaller defenders, with a pair of dimes tossed in.  Sasha canned a big three, then another long jumper.  Farmar buried two triples of his own.  And importantly, the unit clamped down hard on the Bulls at the other end, forcing four steals and a travel on Chicago's Ben Gordon

For Farmar, who finished with 13 points (eight in the fourth) on 5-10 from the floor, plus a trio each of Lamar_odom_drives_against_tyrus_tho steals and dimes against only one turnover, the good showing was particularly well timed.  He showed a few signs of life Thursday night against Golden State, but overall has left the coaching staff and Laker fans alike wanting more.  A fair amount more, really.  Combined with a second straight positive night from Sasha (bad T for yipping at the officials aside), the backup backcourt reminded people of how they can impact the team.

In a positive way, to be specific.

Gasol, who didn't start the game well, finished with 23/10/3 on 9-17 shooting.  Odom had 16, and Ariza finished with an appropriately stealthy 18/8 with a pair of pilfers, missing only two of his nine shots on the night.  Dude's been rock solid of late.  Kobe didn't shoot the ball well (10-25) but still finished with 28, and importantly dished out seven assists and five steals.  Overall, LA won the turnover battle 23-10, including 16 steals to Chicago's two, and while the Bulls finished the night a hair over 50% from the floor, considering they were hovering around 70% deep into the second quarter (if memory serves), that's really not so bad.

All in all, a solid start to the roadie, and one that could pay dividends down the road if it restores some confidence to the sagging backup guard corps.

the Lakers just sent a message to all the teams with sub .500 records who were looking to steal one from us on this trip.

actually, they sent two messages, but I think the "our bench can outproduce your bench" is the one that will stick with those other teams more..

..as opposed to the "hey, we'll spot you 15" that the first half Lakers were doing.

When the bench plays well like tonight, the Lakers are very hard to beat. Here's hoping they can hold up their end of the log on the rest of the road trip.

I can't stand Bennett Salvatore. It seems every Laker game he refs, the Lakers are in jeopardy. Kobe got fouled on numerous jumpers. But they were never called by Salvatore or his crew. Salvatore initials say it all about him....BS.

Good start to the trip...good to see the team bounce back and take a tough one. United Center's crowd was on board with the MVP chant. Amazing!

Gotta love the 4th Qtr D that threw down the beat down to make the Bulls bow down. We just need to cut down the yip yapping jibber jabber to the Zebras so we can put up the only banner that matters. LAKE SHOW FOR LIFE!!!!

Just got back from the game and what a great experience. Lots of Laker fans in attendance - the favorite jersey was the Kobe 24 in home whites. Don't know if you heard it on TV, but there was enough of us to get an MVP chant for Kobe during free throws. Too bad he missed so many of them!

Now could you tell me who those impostors were that played in the first half? The good guys played with so much more confidence and poise in the 2nd half - so much so that the 4th quarter felt inevitable. Hope to see that kind of effort and "brains"manship as they go on.

131-92,

"Dont worry about the Cavs schedule and having a better record than them ... worry about the Celtics record and staying in front of them ... cuz thats the only chance you have of beating the Celtics!"

Hmm the Celtics have 4 more losses than the Lakers and 5 more than the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Didn't I say you Green dudes should stop smoking and look at Lake Erie? The Cavaliers sure look hungry for you dudes!

"It is what it is, a weak performance tonight...."

Then consider the Celtics 1271-121 defeat at the hands of Da Bulls to make them "non-contenders" in the NBA and they won't win a championship.

Come on 70's Laker Fan, stop living 30 years ago of West and Wilt. I don't care if you have been a fan since the Big Bang, your criticisms are way off based. Saying the bench mob sucks just sucks. Do they play bad at times? Yup and they aren't supposed to score against 1st team line ups. Yet they did and beat the team that beat the Celtics.

So quit whining.

-KB Blitz

Thank you!

Dan in ChiTown - that must have been great. I'm envious.

Key is that Phil played LO with the reserves instead of Pau. That move reinstated the original second unit from the start of the year when the bench mob was excelling.

Pretty good coach that Phil Jackson.

Need the cockiness of Farmar and Sasha back.

keep it up Lake Show!

Greetings Lakeshow Fans,

Nice comeback win at Chicago...117-109...The Bulls are no longer a pushover team, especially with Salmons and Miller added to the mix. Although the Lakers had trouble spotting Salmons and Rose, it was the bench that saved the day and "rightfully" so...Still need to hunker down on D!

Overall, I felt that Farmar's energy in the 4th quarter was exactly what the Lakers needed (especially that driving dunk)...Hopefully, this will be a good sign of things to come...

Folks, some of us have bashed the benchmob practically all year. Well, at times, they deserved such bashing. However, I ALWAYS look down the road when it comes to team and player improvement. The idea is to play the best ball come PLAYOFF time! There are still 10+ games left to work on the KINKS...

We all know that besides Bynum, the benchmob is also going to be key to the crown. NO QUESTION!

Lately, it looks like Vujacic and Farmar are starting to come around slowly, but surely. Once these fellas get their "game" back as well as Drew coming back, the Lakers are going to be tough to beat anywhere. PERIOD!

The key to their play is AGGRESSION...controlled of course.

Like I always say, ADVERSITY builds CHARACTER!

CHARACTER leads to CHAMPIONSHIPS!

Laker pride through ALL and any ADVERSITY!

Now we cant fall asleep on the THUNDERS they will come out fighting but we should win that game. the cavs will never loose i think if we keep wining cause they just play with to much energy. I cant see us having a better record then them cause we have to much road games. We might go 7-0,6-1,6-2 or the worst 4-3. But after that we will win almost every game maybe not the ROSEGARDEN. BUT THE CAVS only game is the Boston maybe Spurs.

KUDOS TO OUR 'BENCH MOB' (LO, Josh; Farmar, Sasha and, why not... even Luke had his moments!! They showed us what they are capable of when they play with heart and determination!!

4th Quarter was very entertaining and made the pain and despair suffered during the previous three Q's disappear.

Best wishes for the rest of the journey. The LAKERS LOYALS are behind you!!!!

GOOOOOOOOLAKERS!!!!

Good Grief, Luke is absolutel y worthless. The best we can hope for is he holds his own otherwise it is a major disadvantage having him on the floor. Additionally, JF is not ever going to be an NBA caliber above average ,starting PG. If Mitch could come up with a PG that is NBA qualifty in the off season, the Lakes would have a dynasty. I love TA and please AB, get well soon!

The number one thing that worries me about the Lakers right now are the minutes that Gasol, Kobe and Fish are playing.
Pau and KB have been playing non-stop since 2007!
That was even before the global recession started.
I'd hate to see them lose their legs in June.

The keys to reducing this risk factor are not credit default swaps with AIG. It lies with Farmar, Sasha, Powell and PJ.

Now that the bench mob is playing well, PJ needs to start resting Kobe-Pau-Fish with more minutes from Sasha-Powell-Farmar. That bench five combo of LO-Sasha-Farmar-Powell-Luke needs to get more burn since they s/d be able to handle most of the starting 5s the Lakers will be facing on this roadie.

Welcome back Jordan farmar and sasha vujacic. Intesity back - Check! Shooting touch back - Check! Farmar stepped up big time in the 4th and hit 2 crucial threes and made key steals down the stretch. While I especially enjoyed the jawing of sasha and Gordon, that fueled the fire of the machine. Did you notice the two baskets in the 4th by sasha were all net, the ball didn't even grace the rim. Looks like his touch is back. How bout those MVP chants in Chicago for Kobe. Wow, totally unexpected. And how scary will d rose be 2-3 years from now, the dude is definetly a baller. Once he develops an outside game he"ll be imposible to guard. Great game. Lakers for life! 09 champs!

I agree with Kobeblitz.....

We need the better record than the Celtics, much more than we need it against the Crabs who were swept by the Spurs 2,4, or 6 years ago (that's a joke).....and this is all assuming we can get out of the WEST, which isn't as wild as it was this year, but the Spurs will always scare me, and the Hornets can catch people off guard....

I was watching Gasol fight for position the other day, and I think he does it pretty well for a European....I am not going Mike T. here, but I think his calves are not as thin as people would think. Standing in huddles next to other players, his calves are not thin. Like I said, I'm not going Kwame calves here...He maintains his position pretty well considering he is relatively upright, which serves him well come rebound time, because of his height and reach....(had a 7'5" wingspan when he came into league, along with a cd collection ranging from Jay-Z to Ricky Martin)

Someone find Rodman and hire him to mentor Trevor on defense, and on how to display emotion. We need loose screw on the team now that VanRad is on a "road trip" of his own. Boy, Trevor's shot has improved, what next, pull up jumpers? Playing the point? (he probably could).....

Anyway, we escaped with the first one, let's hope that we don't have to endure them in the same fashion.

h.

lamar is always the difference makers.
he stabilizes both the starters and bench; he complements everyone's game.

isang

yes lamar is the difference maker, not always, don't be so adamant. He is the difference maker sometimes when they win, and ................sometimes when they lose.

Looks like Shaq will be a Laker when he breaks Wilts record, how appropriate. There's sarcasm in there somewhere, but it is 630 AM and I havn't slept yet, or more than 30 hours since Monday night.....

When I watched the first half i was practically crying at Laker's defense, no one was stopping the drives and they were taking uncontested shots..good to see luke, ariza and farmar gaining confidence in the 2nd batch for the good win!

Good Morning Charles....Good Morning Everyone....

that was indeed a welcome change---great feeling game by the end, as it were...

though free throwing was as the Bull announcers so elequently put it, "horrific"...I had some other adjectives to describe it but as this is a family blog I won't elaberate, seemingly...

speaking of the Bulls announcers, usually they are fairly blatantly biased (they think their team never travels and the oposition constantly does for example) as I remember, but last night, in the light of pretty "horrific" refereeing, they actually stated how bad some of those foul calls were on our players---and make no mistake the refereeing was indeed stanky bad...

understatement of the week department...wait for it...steady...it was great to see our bench revert to their former ways of building a lead and playing fairly inspired basketball (well not counting the 2nd quad anyway)...

we know what all our players are capable of and it is very reafirming to see them execute up to their abilities..

it is always the consistency question....If Farmar, Sasha, Lamar, and Mr. Walton can play with consistency and up to their abilities we are extremely hard to beat to say the least...

hope this game is the germination of some momentum and focus for this road trip and on into and thru out the playoffs (knock on some serious wood beavers)...

still wish John Salmons wil someday (soon) wear the Purple and Gold...and yes he still does look like Sam the Sham (Domingo Samudio), just needs the turban..

"well you can radiate everything you are"

AS ALWAYS, AS EVER, YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY (AND SEASON) TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!

GO LAKERS !!!

Great comeback!! But...

We're not going to win any championship if we CONTINUE to play like that in the playoffs.

Lack of effort in the first half and CONTINUED missed free throws will NOT get the trophy!!

more thoughts,

Ariza in the starting line up really gives us some athletism and a viable scoring weapon and defensive presence...as he further meshes as a starter we should see even more how valuable a player he will be for this team...

I am glad to see he is getting some balence back in his offense---for a while he was camping out beyond the arc way too much...when he attacks, with fakes, he really opens up his options...

hopefully he can end up with quite an effective mid range game, with a basket attacking and three point shooting counterbalence...he will be very hard to defend, which in turn will open up other players opportunities that much more as well...

will also need to continue to improve free throwing (along with everyone else of course)...

GO LAKERS !!!

Although the Lakers pulled this out, they did all the things that drive me nuts about them.

1. Poor free throw shooting.

2. Not blocking out on defense.

3. Odom missing layups.

4. Gasol trying to lay it in instead of dunking.

5. Gasol getting pushed around. BY ROSE!!!

6. Silly fouls 20-30 feet from the basket - Fisher had one on Brad Miller in the 3rd. They were only down 1 in the 3rd at the time. Gasol tried for a reach a few possessions before too. Fouling someone like Brad Miller is like just giving points away.

7. Rambus defense - where the guards just let the dribbler go around them. I think #2 is due to their type of defense where they allow the dribbler to just go around them most of the time to try and trap them into the baseline. I think this causes other player to leave the player they're guarding and makes it difficult to block out causing a ton of easy 2nd chance points. Every team that the Lakers play against do a much better job of preventing penetration, even 1-1 against Kobe, than the Lakers guards do in preventing penetration, because they don't really try to keep the dribbler in front of them. They just try to funnel them to the baseline every time.

8. Bennett Salvatore - thank you Bennett, for game 6 2002, but you don't have to spend the rest of your life trying to show that you don't favor the Lakers. Also, with this guy, it's like the home team getting a free 10 points. Although I don't think it was Bennett that made this call, but that call on Odom on Rose was HORRIBLE.

KB Blitz,
First of all I could care less about what happened with the Bulls and Celtics or any team for that matter except for the Lakers. I'm not living in the past and 30 years ago. I've played b ball through high and in to college in So Cal and am now retired Air Force living in New Mexico and still play organized basketball at my present age and do it quite well so i'm not some chump that don't know bad ballin when I see it. And lastly Son, i'm not whinning, just tellin the truth about this Laker team in it's present state and they are not tough enough or mentally ready for playoff basketball right now. Yeah they won the game in the end but, the Bulls were in total control of the game until they started missing shots. It is what it is... A Weak perfomance that won't fly in the playoffs. I've been an NBA and Laker fan for a very long time and just like (Chick Hearn), "the best and most unbiased Laker/basketball announcer ever" will always tell it like it is.....

I was able to watch the game on WGN last night here in Cleveland.

The Lakers are now 31-1 when utilizing the powers of the lucky barstool.

Dr. Jerry Buss needs to buy that place and pay me to guard that barstool at all times.

Anyhow, an ugly first half last night, but I was proud of how our team came back in the second half. The Zohan has gotten past his funk and is playing like the player Laker Nation loves.

Bring on our next opponent!

Time to bring some pain to the East!

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

I'd put this down as two in a row for an "off-Kobe" night. His handles aren't crisp right now, some of his plays more ill advised than usual. Dude is my hero, but I think either his hand is busted or he is just getting tired.

Others::

Sasha: is it me or was he finally trying to do what everyone has been begging him to do: slow the f down...

Powell: Dude is deadly from 15 feet. From 5 feet and in he plays softer than Kwame.

Walton: as long as he's guarded by someone six inches shorter than him, he is effective in the post...

Gasol: when his weird little trashball hook doesn't go in, it sure looks like a terrible shot.

70sLakersfan - you're telling it like it is? You mean, when you proclaim 30 minutes before the game is over that the Lakers won't win the game? That's "telling it like it is"? Maybe you shouldn't be making predictions and then trying to rationalize them when you're wrong. How about "I was wrong to make that kind of prediction."

You have valid points and criticisms about the Lakers mental make-up, but just quit with the prediction business, because you're no good at it. Or maybe this is some mental defensive mechanism so you won't be disappointed if the Lakers don't win the title, then you can say "I knew it. I told you so". But if they do win, you'll be happy just like the rest of us, but you'll explain that it was because of the "change" in their attitude that led them to become champions, when really nothing changed, you were just wrong in your assessment of the team.

Why do the Lakers play better on the road versus home?
Answer:
Home=distractions (i.e.: personal web sites to manage).
Road=togetherness (i.e.: dinner/movies/malls).
I love the long road trips.
Players see only each other (along with coaches/staff).
Long home stands: everyone goes in different directions.

Now that we've established your tremendous credibility...I seem to recall the issues people have with you stemmed from your first half comments where you counted the Lakers out and called our bench bad, etc. The Lakers won in the end and it was largely thanks to the bench. I think the point people are trying to make is that you shouldn't make assumptions, comment, and naysay before a game is over because 1) it's the NBA and anything can happen and 2) people don't like reading unnecessary negativity.

Now, your comment about whether this Laker team is ready for the playoffs is somewhat more legitimate, I just happen to disagree. Yes, this team has problems but I think they're perfectly capable of competing for a championship *right now* even without Andrew Bynum in the lineup. Every team has issues and no team is perfect. The question is whether or not the team can peak at the right time, ala how Boston did in the conference / ultimate finals last year.

Passionate Lakers Fan,

in that case, forget homecourt lol.

good win last night. i was actually able to watch it on a streaming website. thank god for technology.

i applauded the play of Sasha, Jordan, and Trevor last night, and will gladly do so again today. i hope they continue to play like this from now on, and until they win the NBA Championship.

good move by Phil to play Odom with the bench. Gasol has been playing too many minutes anyway. i get the feeling that Odom won't mind playing some more minutes, and it won't affect him in the long-run. he should be fresher than Gasol, since he came off the bench (1st half of season), and didn't have to play in the off season.

too bad the lead wasn't a little bigger, or else PJ might've put Brown in the game. like to see the dude get some minutes. (i'm secretly still rooting for Sun Yue, but since he's not even with the team right now...)

Kobe

You get so caught up in stuff about we beat a team that beat that team that beat that other team! Who cares?
For someone who knows how many playoff loses the Lakers had in their title yrs of the 80's you sure dont understand matchups!

You forgot to mention we just won at the Spurs and the Lakers got beat at the Spurs. We art 3-1 vs Orlando and Lakers are 0-2. The NBA regular season is different than the post season. Sometimes you catch teams on back to back on the road or 4th game in 5 nites and you beat them.

Do you think some of the injuries weve had may have something to do with some of the games weve lost recently? Has that crossed your mind or are you just looking to see who wins so you can figure out if the Lakers beat them or not.

Since we were 2-0 vs the Lakers last yr .... Im sure you gave your Lakers no shot in the Finals! Am I right?

70's Laker fan, KB Blitz, Justin N and anyone else for that matter,

This Laker team is going to rise or fall in the playoffs based primarily on the leadership of Kobe Bryant. I've watched and played basketball my whole life. I saw the Lakers in the 70's as a young kid, was there for every game in the 80's (the golden era i would like to call it) and continue to go to most games and basically live and die with the Lakers.

The great teams, teams that win championships, always have chemistry and strong leadership. Kobe, perhaps the greatest individual talent I've ever seen, is obviously holding the cards for this team. Jerry West was the leader of the 60's and early 70's teams. (Though their championship heartbreak is well documented, he got them there, knocking at the door every year.) Magic, in my opinion the greatest ever, lead Showtime like no other and has the rings to back up his greatness. Kobe was the key in the early 2000 run because he gave the Lakers a deadly one, two punch and Phil was able to coax him into team concept with great role players.

Now, it's all about Kobe. He must coax, cajole, encourage, lead and make his teammates comfortable and confident in the throws of pressure playoff basketball. He was awesome last year on our run to the finals, but did not have a great final and that was ultimately our downfall. Once again this year, he must get the most out of his teammates for us to win it all, with or without Bynum. (Hopefully with.)

I'm saying this because lately, and at times throughout his career, Kobe seems to think he's the only player that matters on the court and it's frustrating to watch his teammates stand around and let it be all Kobe all the time. That didn't work in the finals last year, it didn't work in the finals against Detroit in 2004 and it's not gonna work this year. The Lakers can play beautiful basketball when ball is moving and everyone is touching it. Hell, Gasol is the perfect complimentary player out there. If the ball gets stuck in Kobe's hands, or he gets caught up in one on one battles, we will fail in long the run. We might win games, Kobe can win them by himself, but we won't win a championship that way. I've harped on the fact the Laker's are unstoppable if he averages between 7-8 assists a game and takes less than 25 shots. I keep saying this to promote the idea of Kobe as the most dangerous damn distributor on the planet. His teammates need to touch the ball. They need to touch it often, in close games as well. If Kobe gets his teammates more involved, they will kill for him and deliver when it matters most. We do it at times, but i want us to do it all the time. It's on Kobe to always look to encourage, and reward his teammates on the floor, that will be how we win the championship. Individual scoring, one on one battles, MVP awards don't mean crap at this point. It's all about rings now, Kobe must make the commitment to play for his teammates, that will get us to the promised land.

Justin, Amazing_Happens,

Thanks for the response, i like hearing what other Laker fans think because we all want the Lakers to be champions. With that said, the Lakers were getting blown out in the first half and deserved to lose the game. The Bulls were in total control and lost the game more than the fact that the lakers came back to win the game due to they shot poorly in the 2nd half and as a Laker fan that really concerns me. Please look at the game within the game and not only the final out come. the Lakers have problems right now. Although the bench players won it in the end for the Lakers which was a good sign, the Lakers are playing down to the level of the competition against teams that they should beat with ease. The closer they get to playoff time the more the Lakers need to make statements with thier play and right now its not happening. The Lakers must start playing as one unit and what better time to start now during this road trip. If not, this blog will be heated in June when we are all home on the couch talking about the woulda, coulda and shouldavs...

Mikefloss,

Your comments are 100% dead on about the Lakers. I have had similar sentements for years about this team. In the final analysis and whether Kobe knows it or not, his legacy has been playing out from the day he arrived in the league to this present day. We keep hearing about Jordan to this day and he is being remembered aguably as the best to ever play this game because he did not allow his team mates to mess it up for him. He kicked @ss when he had to and simply demanded that his team mates played to the best of thier ability and worked hard every night or they answered to him like it or not because when ever you said Chicago Bulls you instantly thought Jordan. Each win or loss was his. Kobe is in that same position today as his legacy is being written. This Laker team has been together for at 4 to 5 years except for Bynum and Gasol who have fit into thier roles nicely. Kobe has to step up and lead the Lakers by any means necessary.
