Happy Pau Gasol Day

Gasol_lakersUPDATE: Mike Bresnahan of the LAT reports the results of Andrew Bynum's MRI will be known on Monday.

With all the injury news, plus the Super Bowl, I almost forgot. It was one year ago today that the Lakers brought in All Star forward Pau Gasol from Memphis in exchange for (basically) peanuts. (I mean that literally. I'm not up on today's commodity prices, but there are likely people who really do believe that actual peanuts would have more value than the package LA surrendered, relative to the value they received in return.)

It's impossible to question the significance of Gasol's arrival for the Lakers.  And given the events of Saturday night, his presence is even more important, the incredibly unfortunate irony of how the point is being driven home put aside.

OMG!!! Bring out the bubbly because this is one day for a freakin' celebration.

Superbowl? What Superbowl?

I still remember that day when we stole him. I think we should have renamed our team the Los Angeles Robber Barons--that's how much of a steal it was. Damn. I can't believe it's been a year.

Thanks for the reminder. I'm gonna go off and dance in the streets now.

This is mickey mouse. If Bynum's people can't be on time, they needn't be involved.

Wes

BONSOIR MES AMIS,

Don't worry, Guys, everything will be fine with Bynum. The injury is very leger and He will come back soon.

Prediction for the trip: 4-1

Love to my team and to all

Shekobe

So much for the old saying "No news is good news". I didn't realize doctors couldn't evaluate MRI's after dark.

Bynum is at it again. Taking a deadline and multiplying it by 10. Bogus. Call Maury Povich. Read the Danm results.

This is really irking me.

This whole thing has voodoo written all over it.

Who sinned in their past life? Who cursed us?

Wes

Yea, WOW, give us the results. This is ridiculous. They better give us some great news tomorrow.

GO LAKERS

i don't understand why the lakers' doctors and the organization ask for those mri images, they are paying bynum, not the other way around. it's incredible what's happening again with andrew's 'people'

Bynum got injured because of Lamar (left knee) and now Kobe (right knee),it is strange, because he is still too young,he will recover soon !

Yes Delinquent Love Child I do.

KG/Ray Ray/Paul crying Pierce when they were together couldn't win in Cleveland in 5 tries!

Maybe Cleveland chants of "BOSTON SUCKS" and "OVERRATED PAUL PIERCE" just make you go wah wah.

It don't matter what the Lakers record at Cleveland it isn't about us it's about YOU. The Big 3 couldn't win against the King and when the King again meets Paul crying Pierce he'll embarrass that Fake Larry Bird and the Big 3 will probably go and whine in the locker room and not even congrats the King when he beats Paul Crying Pierce like the Bad Boys couldn't do against Jordan.

Or how the Wussy Big 3 left without even saying grats to the Lakers for sending them Green wussies when we beat you fools on Christmas (Refs yeah right what excuse will you use is that the refs wouldn't accept your old man's dough?)

Memphis traded Pau to us for peanuts last year cuz they felt bad about Drew's knee.

This year, as another reconciliation gift, I think they should trade us Rudy Gay for peanuts.

It's only fair xD

Its already Monday here- how come I don't know anything?!?
Just a little time zone humour there...

Happy Pau Day! Truly something to be thankful for!!
Anna

Is it "Bynum's people"? I mean we ARE playing NY so maybe it just happends to be a DR. from NY.

FROM PALM BEACH, FLORIDA

PAS DE PANIQUE!

THE MRI'S RESULTS: OUT FOR A FEW WEEKS =BYNUM WILL BE THERE FOR THE PLAYOFFS=

PRAY FOR BYNUM, AMIGOS.

ODOM, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, BE CONSISTENT.

SHEKOBE

I read somewhere that the doctor who ordered the test wasn't around the read the result, so they have to wait. He's probably at the Superbowl or something. So stupid.

Ah well. Hopefully it isn't too long tomorrow.

GO LAKERS!!!!!!
KILL THE KNICKS!!!!!!!!!!

And incidentally, getting Pau was like one of the very best things that has ever happened to this team. GREAT JOB MITCH!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, Pau is the man, no doubt about it. I don't even know how to quantify what his presence means here. I used to be a fan when he was with Memphis... but I don't think anyone would have predicted how he much he would contribute, what a great teammate he'd be... just came in like an adopted stray and said, i'm home, wat do you want me to do?

I actually remembered. What;s going on at Staples for the season ticket holders tonight?

Peanuts?

Skinny Spaniard for a future Hall of Famer?

Miguel Colonel's BFF will curse you out for that analogy. Same guy who wished harm to Drew and whose curse is till in effect at every trade annivesary.

As they say in American Idol - Be Careful.

I think someone should just ask how Bynum is doing. You can tell a lot about how he's doing by just taking a look at how his knee looks today. If he can't put pressure on it and it's swollen, it's bad. Hopefully the fact that there was no laxity(I'm assuming since someone examined him and it's fairly easy to do this exam, even the trainer can do it), and he didn't hear a "pop", means that there's no significant ligament damage. I also don't think you need a $2 mil a year orthopod to read an MRI. One of the MRI fellows should be able to read it and let the team know some info.

As for the Arizona Cardinals fans, you need to know that cheap owners will never win it all. I know, because I've been a Chargers fan for 30 years. Spanos, Sterling, Bidwell, they may get lucky enough once in awhile to get to the finals, but none of these turkeys will ever take their team to the Promised Land.

i want to remind bloggers/fans, that nthis one is a 6 game road trip. i know, we r playing the raptors, in Canada, another country, but it is still part of the NBA. that game is wednesday. and the celts game is a B2B.

P ang,

I changed my handle from Migule Colonel, anyway yea I bet Mike T is happy that another human being is hurt while we never wished anything bad upon KWAMAY BROWN. Some people are just sad, what can I say?

Feliz Dio de Gasol!

For the record, I think Mihm should start if he can. I like Powell, but he's much smaller than Mihm and less of a back-to-the-basket player and defender. I'd much rather see him off the bench as the energy guy.

Besides, have you see Mihm lately? Dude looks angry. I like that.

Guys,

Need I remind you that I was the first person to be predicting that Bynum was going down after a good string of games? I'll try to find the link, but I know I was making my opinion heard.

Can't believe we went the whole day without getting the results of the MRI. Really some B.S.

I have a very bad bad feeling about what we're gonna here tomorrow. I think the powers that be decided to wait till after Super Bowl Sunday to give us the bad news. Nobody likes Monday's anyway, so give it to us then. I'll be shocked if Bynum isn't out for the year. I really hope I'm wrong, but think if it was good news, we'd know already.

*****NY DAILY NEWS -Mitch Lawrence+++++++++

The preliminary diagnosis is that Bynum suffered a sprained right knee against Memphis Saturday and will miss the next six weeks. But it could be longer, and the damage could be more serious, pending results of an MRI taken Sunday in Manhattan.

How can he know this already?

BD

Wow.
The Lakers are 65 and 18 (regular season) since steali... sorry, acquiring Pau.
Those are great numbers.

6 weeks for just a sprain? Seems excessive if that what it turns out to be.

Lakers visit Knicks at Madison Square Garden with Andrew Bynum hurt

BY MITCH LAWRENCE
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Sunday, February 1st 2009, 8:24 PM

Nate Robinson (c.) likely won't have to worry about Andrew Bynum (17) when the Lakers visit the Garden Monday.
Related News

Nobody ever said it was going to be "Dream Week" for the Knicks' opponents.

To the contrary, the Lakers, who come to the Garden Monday night and are the first of three NBA powerhouses to visit the Knicks over the next five days, are bracing themselves for bad news on their rising center, Andrew Bynum.

The preliminary diagnosis is that Bynum suffered a sprained right knee against Memphis Saturday and will miss the next six weeks. But it could be longer, and the damage could be more serious, pending results of an MRI taken Sunday in Manhattan.

Fellow Laker Fans,

Let's hope and pray that Bynum does not become the next Sam Bowie.

Remember him?

He's the dude that the Blazers drafted ahead of Jordan in 1983, was good when he was healthy, but had his career cut short because of knee injuries. Him being in and out of the lineup prevented the Blazers from being legitimate contenders back in the 80's.

The Lakers invested long-term into Bynum and if injuries keep him out of the lineup for long stretches, it could affect how they rebuild and be competitive down the road.

Has Laker Tom posted since this happened? He's probably holed up with Nepalese temple ball worry beads... don't worry buddy - the Beast WILL be back!

i think sun yue must do some feng shui for the team

last year, the kobe's pinkie and drew's left knee.
now, kobe's ring finger and drew's right knee.
something must not be right in the lakers' lockerroom..

sun yue it is up to you!

NY Daily News??? how would they have that information when no LA or AP report is stating those kinds of facts?

happy pau gasol day to you too k brothers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

maybe today we will trade a 2nd round pick and some kobe low tops for the thicker gasol.

Marc Gasol rights were not peanuts...

Pau is a great player and his bro is also a great one son it was the best trade but not just for peanuts.

Go Lakers!!

to you. Let's not badmouth Vitti and the staff - they did just get us Farmar back in
half the estimated time.

You called it Never. I just can't believe it went down like that--just like last year. A string of all-star-like performances, everyone starts to get amazed, and then, 'pop.'

Just without the pop this time, I hope.

And someone else mentioned this, but Bynum's Doc was in Florida? He was at the darn Superbowl! He had to be. What else would keep him from properly diagnosing his million dollar client, mid season and all?

It's time to cut Bynum's Doctor out of the picture. What if Bynum's good to go? What if there's no damage at all to his knee? It would be nice to know this stuff before we play our next opponent. Was his Doc planning to call after the Knicks game and say ‘by the way, Bynum was good to go’?

Something stinks. (Wes moves finger away from nose).

Something still stinks.

Maybe we need a different approach to this. What if we don’t accept the diagnosis? What say we use this week as a buffer week, like they do with unemployment. We’ll hold off on the diagnosis, we won’t let Bynum play, but we will let him snowboard and wrestle and maybe even cage fight. Then after a week of hand to hand combat we’ll sit Andrew for a week, let him play another week, take two weeks off, then we’ll play him another week before reading the Doctors diagnosis.

After all, what’s the rush?

Wes

Some Newspapers like to make assumptions. Thing is, they said during the game that Andrew Bynum had suffered a minor knee sprain which means that if at worse, he's out for about 4 weeks. Now I'm assuming however, but it all depends how strong Andrew's knees are and his youth is certainly on his side.

How could any real NBA fan not remember Sam Bowie. He's the reason why Portland has been cursed to this day. But thinking that, how many championships would Phil Jackson have today if Portland had made the right choice by picking Michael Jordan in that draft?

Last night was one of the best Superbowl's I ever witnessed. It was simply a David vs Goliath match up and even though Goliath won at the end, David's Cardinals showed a lot of heart out there. I didn't give the Cardinals the light up day when they faced Atlanta in the first round of the playoffs. But they surprised many of us on there road to the Superbowl, turning it into a Cinderella story but without the happy ending. Nice job Cards! In my book, you guys are Champs!

WILL BYNUM's KNEES DIE? WILL THEY GIVE UP?

EVEN WITHOUT BYNUM WE R STILL A BETTER TEAM THAN LAST YEAR AS ARIZA IS HEALTHY.

COMMING SOON: BEAST 2 REVENGE OF THE BEAST DYNASTY

Good Morning, Laker Nation!

Game Day!

It's time for...

Jon K.'s Early Thoughts That He Has Not Put Too Much Thought Into Yet:

1. A great super bowl last night.

2. As scary as this may sound, people from Western Pennsylvannia are even worse than people from Northeast Ohio. One word: "Deliverance"

3. Does Andrew Bynum and the Lakers think that Laker Nation will be able to just "chill out" whilst we are made to wait for the results of the MRI? Then they don't know Laker Nation!

4. I still feel sickly about Bynum's injury. I wish there was someone to blame, so we might as well blame BK. You know he feels responsible, but he won't admit it. Who knows? The guy might even feel a little shadenfreuden. He is from St. Louis, after all.

5. I'm on the "Start Chris Mihm" bandwagon. Keep the Bench Mob intact.

6. I hate the Knicks and I'm amazed that they are close to making the playoffs. This is not the "easy" game that I was anticipating.

7. Who out there thinks Michael Teniente has a voodoo doll in the likeness of Andrew Bynum? It's possible.

8. Hopefully, right now, Sun Yue is in New York's Chinatown buying Dit Da Jow for the wounded Beast.

9. We're a better team with The Beast hurt than we were last year (healthy Mihm and Ariza, improved Farmar and Vujacic, another year playing together, Powell is better than Turiaf...). Still, I don't feel well. Bynum's injury has me rather upset.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

Watched the Bowl at my doc friend's house. He had his knee done by Lombardo the Laker guy. Said he's the man. Since my friend's the man, I'm assuming he'd know.

So who's Andrew's guy? His bedside manner needs work. I'll let ya know in a couple days if you're season is over? Good that he didn't make a reckless diagnosis, but judging by last year's treatment sequence, AB might want to come back and do some doc shoppin'.

Good monring Mamba24 & the Laker morning CRUE!

It's hard to get really excited about game day, but let's be positive.

The Spanish Acquistion - arguably one of the better NBA trades ever completed - has been with us for a year now, and we are (obviously) loving it! He will service us well while we wait for the prognosis on Socks.

We're better right now than we were last year because of various players upping their game, and of course because of Trevor, so YES we can hold the fort!! All is not lost!!!

SOCKS - get well soon buddy! WE NEED YOU!! Not just for a ring, either. We need you to be ok so Kobe doesn't get swallowed up by guilt. I have never seen him look so upset. It's like he saw the season and the team's championship dreams flash before his eyes. But - knowing the Mamba - he'll be putting a hurt on everyone he comes across until our Beast is back in the middle. I feel sorry for the rest of the league right now. (Well - not really!)

GO LAKERS! Humiliate the Bricks!

Boy I can't stand to wait for the news...

A couple additional things....

1. The only reason I can assume that the MRI results have not been released are either a) The results are BAD b) The results are complex and there is no clear route of therapy--thus putting us in a situation similar to last year's.

2. Watching the Super Bowl at an Akron bar last night I overheard a conversation that made me smile. The only attractive woman in the place was taking a small group of men to task about the Lakers. She stated animatedly, "Are you f'ing kidding me? The Lakers are going to KILL the Cavs! They've got Kobe Bryant for God's sake! LeBron James is a fraud and you all know it! See! This guy knows what I'm talking about!" She said pointing at me as I silently bore an ear to ear grin.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

Dear LakerGod,

Please don't allow the MRI results to be devastating.

Go Lakers!
Amen

It's a bit presumptive to assume that the results are unfavorable only because we don't know what's up yet...

There's only one reason the results aren't already out there: Bynum's doctor is lazy.

Yeah I said it lol.

But seriously though, "Lakers doctors were also unable to look at the MRI results because of unspecified technological differences between their computers and those used at the hospital" says it all.

So let's continue to have faith that things will work out. Hopefully.

LAKERS TODAY LAKERS TOMORROW LAKERS FOREVER !

it's 11:33 AM out here on the east coast, and still no word from Bynum's knee specialist (Altichek, i believe his name is)?

i believe the reason why we have not gotten the official results yesterday, was because the specialist definitely flew in from florida last night (during or after the Super Bowl is a mystery). and by the time he arrived, his office was closed, thereby he was "off the clock." whether or not he even works on Sunday is another issue.

and i'm sure the New York article was only based on those preliminary tests performed by Lakers trainers. possibly even by the doctor that took the x-ray (in Memphis). quite frankly, i wouldn't trust anything until this site reports the official word on the knee.

i'm going to remain optimistic that this won't be season ending, and will just be sprain.

I never got injured like this... You guys should trade Lamar and Andrew for me... Ill make it worth your while...

I'm on that start Mihm bandwagon. I like Lamar with the second unit and Chris is still an NBA level starter. He just needs the reps.

Start Mihm and maintain the bench mob.

Good morning everybody, (I missed you Mamba24)

Ok, now that I've gotten over the news of AB's injury, I can say this. The fact that AB walked out of the locker room without the assistance of a crutch is a great sign. I think he'll be out about 2 weeks and will be back.

I also think our players will step up to the plate in AB's absence. I know we're worried about this road trib but I think we can handle it. We've got the talent to handle anything that comes our way. Our players will have to play a little harder and smarter...that's it. AB's going to be fine. I've already spoken to the highest power who assures me he will be with us in a short period of time.

By the way, did I mention I hate Memphis.

Pig Miller-

I agree. Gotta keep the bench mob together. They are so good because of how well they play together. If we were starting our best 5 then LO and Ariza would have a pretty strong case to start.

START MIHM

Even better....COME BACK SOON DREW

GO LAKERS

Any chance of this day becoming a National Holiday? C'mon Barrack!

Seriously, we'll be leaning a little more heavily on our two premier players, now. Kobe (injured hand and all) is going to have to play as well as he has been, if not better (hard to imagine). Gasol will have to score a rebound more, too.

But it's number 7, Lamar Odom, who stands to gain the most out of this unfortuneate conluence of events. This is his big chance to prove to the league that his drop in stats has nothing to do with his abilities as much as it was him sharing space with two 7 footers and coming off the bench.

Let's go Lamar!

Good Morning Charles....Good Morning Everyone...

still no news, I am trying hard to use the preverbial virtue but it is hurting my little brain...

like Gilligan once said (as he was hanging from all fours stretched between four trees by some visiting not so friendly neighboring head hunters) "the suspension is killing me"

like Oddball said in Kelly's Heros--"enough with the negetive vibes man"---positive vibes from the collective Laker faithful can be a powerful thang...

hope Mihm starts tonight (if not Mihm I would still settle for Bynum)...come on Jackson, really think this through...

I hate the Knickerbockers and I always have---we should have won that year in spite of Willis Reed's dramatic (I am gagging just thinking about it) limp through the tunnel--Wilt shoud have made him pay for playing on one leg--WTF?---that still sticks in my craw---I don't forget...at least we got some revenge later...

I did, however, alwasy like some of their players, notably Clyde---at the time he (Walt Frasier for the uninitiated) was the real deal that Joe Namath used as a fashion role model..now Walt is one of the Knickerbocker announcers and still has that laid back Clyde coolness, though he doesn't think the Knickerbockers foul much it seems...

hopefully we come out and play the way most teams that have an injured star plays---with intensity and soemthing to prove and make up for...

"how does it feel to be one of the beautiful people?"

"it's not a balloon!"

AS ALWAYS, AS EVER, YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY (AND SEASON) TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!

GO LAKERS !!!

Here it is, six weeks:

Seriously you guys should trade these losers for me... Lamar, Andrew and Sasha... for Kwame "The Immortal" Brown...

Bozz -

Again, that was a report based off nothing confirmed. Until there's something that includes work from a doctor, this is still speculation.

AK

To some extent, the question of LO vs. Mihm in the starting lineup is a lot like discussing the starting SF spot- bigger on paper than in reality. In the end, LO is going to play far more minutes, including fourth quarter ones. The question then becomes where the backup C's time (Mihm, presumably) comes. 15 minutes? 18? 20 at the very most, I'd think.

I've always advocated for trying to keep as many things the same after an injury, to avoid disrupting an entire rotation, so in that sense starting Mihm would be a solid choice, and then just ramp up LO's time accordingly. But then Lamar would still get that first run with the seconds. On the other hand, the "new" rotation with Odom in the starting five really wouldn't be, because it's the same thing they did over the second half last season. Not much adjustment.

BK

Hey Pg Welcome back:

Steelers win!! Cardinals lose hehe.

The Superbowl MVP should have been Roethlisberger. Holmes did great but hey it was Big Ben did direct that drive.

-Kobeblitz

I'd join the Mihm bandwagon... maybe short starter minutes (like Vlad or Luke, haha).

I read an article where it stated that of all players, ...LAMAR ODOM WILL NEED TO RISE TO THE OCCASION.

LOL. hahahaha

YEAH RIGHT.

You guys wont see me rooting for him when Lamar Odom EXPLODES for 16 pts, 9 reb 5 assists against theTHUNDER and then becomes his old self the next game with 7 pts 8 reb, 3 assists

it's 1am now in asia. can somebody pls post the news now abt bynum's injury? i want to sleep.

There's only one guy in New York who can read an MRI?

http://tinyurl.com/bdrmqy

He's playing like a beast. Andrew might be lost.

Imagine.

Let your feelings go about what happened 5 years ago.

Just saying.

AK/BK,
You probably can't answer this, but two bad knee injuries in two years... is there something about the way Bynum is built, especially the lower body, that just makes him prone to injuries? Or were these two freak accidents that could have happened to anyone?

I like the comment in that article Bozz...

Until AB's back, the Lakers will have to play with the same squad that got them to the NBA Finals last year...not bad at all.

I'll take that. Trust me, AB will not be out 6 weeks...more like 2-3.

Mikeandmike, we all know Odom tends to disappear in big games, but just in terms of regular season, take a look at his game log last year after Gasol's arrival. You'll see that he basically averaged 15pts, 11rbs, 5 asts and a block and steal the rest of the year, with stunning consistency.

Thinking of the possible reasons as to how the results being delayed could possibly good news.

1) Bynum's knee has made such a miraculous recovery that further tests are required to investigate his newfound superhumanness

2) Everything is fine and they just want to surprise the knicks when they announce late tomorrow afternoon that hes playing against them

3)They know the results, all is fine and they figure any publicity is good publicity so they are holding the results in an attempt to gain blog hits,LA times hits, laker website hits and to keep fans generally obsessed.

4) Bynums doctor missed his plane

5) Bynum is more immature than we thought and is pulling a more elaborate version of the Paul Pierce faker routine which will involve being wheeled out to centre court in a wheelchair wearing a big a blond curly wig halfway though the first quater of this weeks Celtics game as ' Hit me baby one more time' thunders through the stadium.Bynum then proceeds to strip off a Paul Pierce celtics Jersey, urinate on it, then throw it into the stands before pounding his chest and screaming 'y'all are just lucky I didn't need a dump'

This team, without Bynum is still better than last years. Keep that in mind. More experience, plus Ariza! That in itself is an Improvement.

START CHRIS MIHM BANDWAGION **
****
(01) JON K - OWNER - I'm on the "Start Chris Mihm" bandwagon. Keep
the Bench Mob intact
(02) MAMBA24 - Long time fan. Chris you have been missed
(03) BOZZ - I'm on that start Mihm bandwagon. I like Lamar with the second
unit and Chris is still an NBA level starter. He just needs the reps.
Start Mihm and maintain the bench mob.
(04) MRBARNEY DANGLES – START MIHM Even better....COME BACK SOON DREW
(05) DAVE M. - I'd join the Mihm bandwagon... maybe short starter
minutes (like Vlad or Luke, haha).

Missed you to EastCoast. Trying to pace myself for the season.

Vonislav-

You're right- it's tough for me to answer. But the latest injury is very much a freak accident. Wrong place, wrong time. The first one was awkward, too. Does that make him injury prone? Not in the sense I tend to think about it, but obviously once you get hurt the damage is done and it's always a consideration.

But while I'm not a doctor, i don't think either injury reflects some sort of congenital issue that makes Bynum different from other NBA players.

BK

Waferdenko, I know. I am just trying to awake myself with some mild yet crude Lakers humor. I am just so tired of counting on him. Its annoying to watch him play and listen to him speak. At least for myself.

From his "Lets get nasty." talk to his unfocussed behavior on the court, to his lack of awareness on defense, to his "lets lay it up in the rim and *boing...whoops should have dunked it to his little stupid smirk when he misses BOTH free throws to his I guess I will dunk it since nobody is in the way and tease fans I am getting NASTY to his stupid poor excuse for not training in the offseason in a contract season and fans still justifying his actions.

Im sorry, but after 4 years of just that from a player who could be so much more gets really IRRITATING.

But you go ahead and put up those stats and keep believing in "LETS GET NASTY."

Please Drew come back soon. I saw the look on Kobe's face, made me feel depressed.

Mamba24 - I'll take a seat on the "Start Mihm" bandwagon please! Keep as much the same as possible - good advice! Besides, Mihm (with a little more burn) will be great. He was our starting center in the not-too-distant past and did quite well as I recall. He'd be a starter on another team.... Someone else noticed earlier how angry he looks - I also like that alot. I think we need to unleash Mihm on the Bricks - he'll make 'em pay like nobody's business - lol!

I understand Mamba24, you're going to need all that energy...playoffs are going to be long and great.

LOL @ KIWI.

That had to be the funniest **** I have read in weeks.

Vonislav,
"You probably can't answer this, but two bad knee injuries in two years... is there something about the way Bynum is built, especially the lower body, that just makes him prone to injuries? Or were these two freak accidents that could have happened to anyone?"

That is a valid reason for concern. You have to include his injury senior year in high school, too. Last year when he got hurt the medical staff siad that he is knock-kneed, and has a wider-than-normal pelvis for someone his height/weight, which makes him more susceptible to the type of injury he had last season.
I haven't seen anything yet on whether that holds true for these types of injuries, too.

Hi all: I am leaning toward the Laker conspiracy theory in that the Lakers PR office (and PJ with his psychological mind games) wants the Cavs, Celtics to think something is wrong and he will be out for a while and to prepare for him to be out...........

BUT that he will miraculously play in BOTH games and those teams will not be prepared for him........

Thoughts????

GO LAKERS!!!

I think its clear the doctor is a NY Knick fan. Probably on Spike's payroll. Hopefully the knees are just at Bynum's "awkward" phase where he truly hasn't fully grown into his huge frame yet and he'll get more solid and durable. Get him doing some more squats once he’s healthy.

The beauty of Gasol day is that with Bynum down we go from definitive favorites for championship and drop all the way down to number one contender. Although I am somewhat mystified how we cannot beat the Charlotte Bobcats whether we have neither Gasol nor Bynum, or when we have them both. I think with Bynum out Ariza has to pick up the minutes, he's got more of the "toughness" the Lakers need with their all finesse line up.

I think the peanuts = cash in Memphis’s owners pockets. Sad for Memphis fans, but at least they can always watch the Lakers and take pride in their contribution. I think in order to compensate them, we should at least send them the Clippers as a consolation prize.

I haven't read all the posts yet--about 10 to go, but It's 1pm EST and I ain't seen nothing yet.

Bogus.

Wes

Mike,

You make a good point. Turns out Marc is pretty good himself. In fact, both brothers will be at the same All-Star weekend. That's impressive.

So maybe peanuts and a Diet Pepsi?

--Fearless

(Intentionally not saying anything 'bout Drew until the photos are read...)

Pig - just checked out that trade machine. Hmmmm. Really twisting down a rabbit hole with that one but.... um, I mean... would Kerr actually DO that? Sending Shaq back to L.A. would no doubt spell doom for all other teams. Unless... Kerr were to install some sort of ticking time bomb in the Big Self-Referencer. Jeez, Pig. Ur making my brain hurt, why'd you bring this up?

Peanuts is not the right word. I'm still high on J-Crtitt (now with the Wizards for a conditional 1st round pick) and Marc Gasol will be a very good center. The draft chices could be very good as well, but salary flexibility was the key. I think in a couple of years it will be evident that both teams won in this trade.

In the NBA, mediocrity should not be an option. If you're not very good, you should be rebuilding. Memphis with Pau was at best mediocre. If you have a second banana type being paid top banana money, like Pau in Memphis, you need to move him.

By the way, check out Chad Ford's analysis of better potential trades http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/insider/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=Gasol-080205. These other trades proposed by Ford don't seem so great. Maybe Tyrus Thomas of the Bulls makes a difference, but is he better than Marc Gasol? Kwame Brown's large expiring contract made this happen, and the collection of potential the Lakers added was better than other potential offered.

Ultimately, the Grizzlies received Marc Gasol and three 1st round picks for Pau, and reduced their payroll signifcantly. One of these picks has been cashed in - PF Darrell Arthur (via draft day trade for pick Donte Green) - and he and Marc Gasol could be the front line of the Grizzlies for many years to come.
