Self-Esteem Sunday: How others see the Lakers
Like a couple dudes happily harmonizing across (or at least near) the 59th Street bridge, Lakers fans are feelin' groovy. Have been since that big Christmas win over the Celtics. Still, given the manic tendencies of the team's devotees- roller coasters don't go up and down more than the mood on a typical live blog- it's instructive to get an idea of how others around the NBA-osphere view the Lakers. Trolling
around for previews of tonight's Lakers-Blazers game, I came across an excellent (and generally accurate) description of the home team over at Blazer's Edge:
"...They are every bit as good as the Celtics in just as many ways. The two teams shade in inverted fashion. The Celtics are an overwhelming defensive team whose offense is so good that you have almost no hope of defending them in like fashion. The L*kers are an overwhelming offensive team whose defense is so good that you have almost no hope of scoring alongside them. It's like asking whether you prefer to get beheaded with a guillotine or a huge axe...
...Since the axe is going to fall, you might as well know that its sharpest edge is the number of field goal attempts L.A. takes and the high percentage they shoot. There's a line in this league where shots are maximized without having to employ gimmicks that compromise your defense and/or rebounding. The L*kers are just about as close to that line as you can get without going over it. They shoot a lot, they hit a lot. The stout handle on that axe--and the camel-breaking straw that spells most teams' doom--is their great offensive rebounding. You can count the teams better in that category on less than one hand. (Portland is among them.) Oh, and if that isn't enough they're also 4th in the league in both free throws attempted and made. That offensive combination is enough to overcome your average team and most of your better-than-average ones as well. At 26-5 that's just what the L*kers have been doing.
On the other end the L*kers manage to play good percentage defense while forcing turnovers...no mean feat as the legion of teams that can only do one or the other demonstrate. They're average defensive rebounders, which is good enough. They have some shot-blocking ability as well, mostly from Andrew Bynum.
Honestly, it's hard to find things the L*kers don't do well, and when you do it's like finding a mole on Jessica Alba's shoulder. Ummmm...so what? They allow latitude to opposing guards to shoot and pass, preferring to bar the middle. They'll allow lesser teams to play with them or get back in the game. Complacency is pretty much their biggest enemy..."
And there you have it. So throw on that old school satin jacket and strut about town with pride. You, Laker fan, have much to be happy about.
BK

ok Eric M.
I'm not Long Time Laker Fan so I am not a big defender of Luke. (I still disagree with him about some things and I don't agree with his argument of Luke being a 40% 3 point shooter). That being said read this please:

Credit goes to the K bros for picking up this from Kurt's blog.
And no Luke may not be the best player in the world but he does not suck.
Trevor Ariza is a fantastic player but he is not the best All Around player that many overrate him to be.

Carlos Deep,
Please do not leave posts that string long series of letters or exclamation points. It stretches out the formatting of the blog and requires us to either edit the post (which we're not supposed to do) or just not push it live (which isn't ideal, either). Just a few extra letters or bits of punctuation will make the point just as clearly.
Thanks,
AK

Blitz,
Fair enough regarding Luke. If you think an occasional good pass makes up for Luke's MANY shortcomings, we'll just have to disagree.
How is that list of PJ's young players who made it off the bench coming?
Kinda of like a club without any members huh?
Posted by: Eric M. | January 04, 2009 at 02:36 PM
Carlos Deep,
Yes, that's exactly what I'm referring to. Just scale it down a good chunk and you'll be fine. Again, the point will be perfectly clear.
Thanks,

How do others see the Lakers?
A} A team whose fans can`t stop talking about winning a meaningless, home, regular season, referee aided, Xmas game...despite trailing with 2:40 remaining in the game.
B} A team that encounters all sorts of disasters in years ending in "9".
1959 : Lakers swept by Celtics
1969 : Celts frustrate West-Baylor-Wilt one last time
1979 : Lakers irrelevant
1989 : Lakers swept by Pistons
1999 : Lakers swept by Spurs
-Jackson has never won a title in a year ending in "9"
-Ilgauskas injury all but gives Celts the East title.
-Deep down, we all know how the 2009 playoffs will end. Come on over to the "dark side", Laker fans. We`re offering "amnesty" to all LA fans if you do so by Feb. 5th!

Eric M, No worries I didn't take it as ripping but here's a counter to that plain diss hehe.
"I have thougt for a long time reading your posts that you never played sports in your life. You were probably in the band, or writing for the school paper. No...Little League, and Freshman Football don't count. Many of your posts lead me to believe this and now the one about "the knee doesn't matter"."
Varsity Football=3 years. Injured knee twice and played with a sprained football. Played FS/SS.
Varsity Basketball 2 years. Played the PG slot.
Varsity Baseball 1 year: Should have played more but UCLA was calling.
The knee does matter when it is the first few games. That is understandable. When it comes to 30+ games it SHOULD not matter. No I don't count it dumb because I had two knee injuries myself. Played through it too. Kobe had knee injuries too yet did NOT affect his production. True some never recover just like C-Webb but he still kept his offensive game but his defense was gone. It may not worry you since you never had a knee injury as well (heck I don't know but you seem to make a judgment call on me so it's fair game).
if it was scoring, then I wouldn't go hard on Bynum. Rebounding is another matter. Rebounding is a powered by effort. Kobe is only 6'6 yet he hits the boards hard. Bynum is 7'0 and only got 2 rebounds?? I'm not too concerned as well but you shouldn't have a slender 7'0 guy named Pau Gasol average more rebounds. Rebounds is all about effort and hustle. Ben Wallace is 6'7 (he admitted it) yet is one of the best rebounders in his prime.
Bo Outlaw was probably the most physical speciman other than Ben Wallace yet he didn't have Wallace's production. Why? Simple. Outlaw never had Wallace's energy and hustle. Otherwise he should have been blocking shots and rebounding more consistently.
Bynum should get out of his (assuming he is worried about the knee) "fear" about the knee. It's already 30 games and he is acting passive. When he worked out in the summer there was no problems with the knee, in fact he claimed his vertical had increased.
There is no evidence to support he is "knee problem" his making scared. It's just him being passive. Kobe played with an injured pinky and people said it would affect his shooting...not. If so then why on heck did he torch All Defensive team stalwart and the defensive minded San Antonio Spurs with over 50% shooting? Bynum is simply too passive. Do I think he will rebound this game? I say hell yeah. And he does have great games like Boston. But like I said:
Inconsistency.
It's his job regardless of knee injury to be consistent. Consistency brings better production. It's up to him to be more consistent rather than show up one game but not show up the other.

" If you think an occasional good pass makes up for Luke's MANY shortcomings, we'll just have to disagree."
If that's the case then you'll too have to agree with me about Jordan Farmar right?
I'll show a list of draft picks in Phil Jackson's career with the Lakers, how they fared, and how they are doing in comparisons with other teams.
2000: 1st Round: Mark Madsen. Received few playing time and had to guard PF since Horry was off the bench. Now he can't get off the bench with the Timberwolves.
2001: Traded away pick earlier
2002: Chris Jeffries traded to Toronto for Kareem Rush, now out of the league (Kareem had a nice career with the Lakers)
2003: Brian Cook: Can't get off the bench in Orlando.
2004: Sasha Vujacic: Earned playing time as backup PG in Jackson's systems the next year. Became 6th man in the 2007-2008 season and the playoffs.
2005: Andrew Bynum: Had 1/2 good season that's it.
2006: Jordan Farmar: Played well as backup. That's it
2007: J-Critt: Only did not get playing time because of Farmar's experience. Had it been the other way, Critt would have been playing under Jackson.
Here's a notion you have to accept Eric M.:
Not every drafted player can become All-Stars.
Heck not even lottery picks can always become all stars.
Jackson's systems allows them to play well. He is not overrated.
If you think otherwise. Please tell me that *you* can make Mark Madsen into an defensive team stalwart or that Jordan Farmar can become John Stockton. If you can then I will support you in saying that PJ is bad on developing players.

>>>>>LTLF was right you probably are Luke's stalker (yikes).
Blitz, you are beginning to sound like Andrew Bynum’s stalker. Fortunately, you will probably change your tune soon as Drew picks up his game and go back to stalking Jordan Farmar. Why does analysis to you always mean “outing” someone? Seriously, your posts are starting to be 100% negative recently. How about a fresh look for the New Year and a focus on what is right about the Lakers? Can you do that or are you stuck in the same groove as the haters you love to criticize? I know you are better than that!
What is it with some Lakers fans that you cannot be happy with the best team in the NBA that is going to rule the next decade and have to “stalk” or “Zakee” loyal Lakers players who are key to this team. In my opinion, anybody who compares Luke and Vlade or Jordan and Andrew to Smush or Kwame must be blinded to what is really happening with the Lakers and seriously handicapped when it comes to enjoying what is turning out to be a historic campaign for another wonderful purple and gold championship.
Analyze is not a synonym of criticize. Show some purple and gold love instead.
Of course, this is all JMNSHBO!

"Analyze is not a synonym of criticize. Show some purple and gold love instead."
I do bleed purple and gold Laker Tom but they aren't without flaws.
When the Lakers beat Boston, everyone played well, that's where there are no criticism as with the Golden State game.
Utah game was different.
It's all about effort. Almost there are no criticisms of KB and Pau Gasol. Why? Because they are the ones who do the right things. Not always 100% since they are human but without those two...can we be leading the WC?
Do I go against Sasha? Very few times. Trevor was simply a case of not overrating him (he can be a 40% shooter and in Reggie Miller's room simply by working hard). Otherwise I have loved Trevor's game.
Jordan's case was simple. Not following the offense and playing bad defense. Just like the Tony Parker comparisons...he is nowhere near TP's cloud. Jordan finally did a good game (following the offense) in the Miami game before his injury so I am hoping for him to continue to play in terms of the triangle offense instead of the Jordan Farmar offense. And didn't I say his defense was bad? He goes down, Trevor helps guard point guards and we contain CP3 (who owned Farmar in the 4th quarter for the 1st Hornets game).
I love our wins and have been trying to knock in that in Troy's head make no mistake.
Then again there are things you can always improve on. Pat Riley when someone did not what he felt he could do on the Lakers really drove the players hard in practice even though the Showtime Lakers won the game.
The thing about Bynum is simple: Besides some good games like Boston and Golden State, where was his effort on the Utah game? In the playoffs EVERY game matters and you can't take a game off. Sure maybe some games this season is okay but it's best to build up consistency with consistent effort and not take a game off. This way in the playoffs the effort is still there beyond Kobe and Pau.
Make no mistake I love our wins and enjoying them too. But I would rather win more in the playoffs, wouldn't you?

Cleveland lost today...Time for the Lakers to put a real stranglehold on the league with a run before the All-Star Break...
I would lose to see a 15 game win streak or something that sends a message...
Posted by: Korey | January 04, 2009 at 04:32 PM
They don't have love for Doctor Dre, Snoop Dogg, and the Lakers?! Well let it be known!
Anyway I do agree with Blitz. Had Critt been drafted ahead of Farmar then Farmar would have been the one sent packing to Memphis. Critt has been playing more minutes now and has been productive in the limited amount of time for the Wizards. I hope he gets more minutes soon.
The Blazers will come to play today while the Lakers are going to take it easy. They need to get off that mentatlity because I think the Blazers are more dangerous of a lineup when BRoy is gone. When I write dangerous, I mean dangerous in a unpredictably volatile way. This team likes to jack up the shots and they can be very streaky. They beat Boston without BRoy and had a 6 point lead late in the third quarter before melting down. Lakers need to come and play.
P.S.
I still think we can get Caron Butler or Chris Bosh for peanuts.

LTLF,
If we win the title this year it will be in spite of the fact Luke plays 20 minutes a game...Not because of it.
And I will be cheering the TEAM. Just cause I think Luke sucks, doesn't mean I don't root for Luke. Between casting up bricks, and his inability to jump, I will admit that waiting for him to "Make a good pass" does challenge my patience.
I LOVE the "He is a smart player" line. That is code for "He's a stiff". Kind of like, My wife's friend is "Nice". Right away you know she is ugly and should not be considered for a date. Luke is that "NICE" girl.
Also, winning the title this year is far from certain. PJ has lost the last 2 times to the finals. Once with Shaq AND Kobe. Guy can't hardly get off the stool without wincing. Can you say OLD AGE?

In case anyone forgot, there's a game tonight lol.
Faith's defensive keys of the game? Aldridge. While they might look for Oden to be offensive minded, especially without Roy, he doesn't have the tools yet to be that beast in the middle offensively. Though if you've ever seen his game, you'll see that as is, he does a better job than Drew right now in sealing the paint and working close to the basket. I think Drew often settles for the hook/jumper...and always away from the basket. Some of that of course is our fault, why pass him the ball so far away?
Should be a fun game. Remember this team beat Boston without Roy. To our delight.

I agree. I didn't write that or ever think that, so I'm not sure what that means.
"The knee does matter when it is the first few games. That is understandable".
You said you played with your knee injury...Sprained football. LOL
A sprained knee is NOT a real injury where ligaments are ripped and repaired. Until you have had it...you just don't understand the "Mental" recovery issues.
If I can summarize your long post about PJ and young players it is:
PJ never had any good young players so don't expect him to develop them. Is that an accurate summary?
If yes...Don't you find it odd that the "Greatest coach in history", has never developed a young player in nearly 25 years?
I would argue that Sasha and AB have done OK DESPITE PJ and all his head games.
I think when Farmar leaves this summer and goes to another team, we will find out that he acturally IS pretty darn good, and we will miss him.

Eric M,
>>>I would argue that Sasha and AB have done OK
>>>DESPITE PJ and all his head games.
And don't forget BJ Armstrong...and Toni Kukoc. And to some
extent Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant (PJ took over in their
third seasons)
But really, you're just ignoring the fact that most of PJ's teams
have been so good that they always get late draft picks.
Bynum was picked number 10, after Rudy T's disastrous season.
That's the highest that any PJ coached team has EVER drafted.
PJ has made some good role players out of second round and
late first round draft picks. He hasn't made any superstars
out of them, but very few players drafted outside of the lottery
become big stars. Ginobili, Parker, Arenas, maybe a couple
others, but less than 20 in the league.
If you really want to test your theory, put PJ on a team that
gets the #1 pick and see how that player develops.
>>>I think when Farmar leaves this summer and goes to
>>>another team, we will find out that he acturally IS
>>>pretty darn good, and we will miss him
Except for the fact that Farmar is still under contract with
the Lakers until at least summer of 2011.
The Lakers will win a championship this season, and part of
the reason they will do that is because of the team play of Luke Walton,
Sasha Vujacic, Andrew Bynum, and Jordan Farmar, all of whom
have ever had ONE coach. And I might add that Trevor Ariza
moved from a guy who could hardly get PT for the Knicks and
Orlando to a VERY effective player under the tutelage of PJ.

The seeds of doubt have to be growing in Beantown. Ever since the Lakers waxed the Celtics on Christmas, the Green Slime has been taking it on the chin. The rest of the league has taken notice and see that the bullies in green can be taken down a notch. Boston remains very good, but their sense of invincibility is gone.
Maybe Danny Ainge can get some old fashioned collusion going again with Kevin McHale. Maybe he can get Al Jefferson and Randy Foye from McH for a bag of magic beans and a couple of tickets to see the Red Sox!!
