Phil Jackson talks to Magic Johnson

Courtesy of ESPN.com.  In an interview that'll be part of tomorrow afternoon's broadcast of the game against the Spurs on ABC, Phil Jackson says he'll coach through the end of next season:

"One more year after this one with the Lakers.  Dr. Buss has insinuated that he would like me to coach longer, but I said, 'Let's just do one year at a time right now.' So that's what we're doing."

Thanks for the link Bronx!

Wow that was disgusting. I feel sick, no really KG is disgusting. He makes me sick to my stomach. He's so obviously upset about that loss. What a jerk.

My hate for the celtics and everything boston is unmatched, media lovefest for king crab and his crabaliers are a close second.

“The Lakers felt like that game was the championship,” he said. “Some of the comments those guys made were incredible, and it was just the regular season. It was kind of comical. But we knew that we just had to move on from that.”

You know what else is kind of comical? That a no-class punk like you and an equally disgusting leprechaun amongst other terrible 'people' won an nba championship.

LG

what a non story. he's said he was gonna do one year at a time from here on out, quite a while ago.

this is how espn generates news without having to do any investigation or work. just post some stupid stuff in public and start spouting opinions about it...now we have something else to cackle like hens about.

Gotta love Magic on ESPN. Except I thought the game was 12:30 West Coast time?

Hopefully we come out with some vigor on defense to start this one off. The Spurs will just try to grind it out like they always do. Competitive? Sure. Fun? Not.
(insert sweet metal hip-hop drum beat here)
Not!

Not!

Now we're the LAKERS!
And we make our SHOTS!
and we don't care for..

anyhoo, I love Bowen's audacity. The guy loves his role in the NBA, he's a workhorse. He reminds me of an old pitcher. Just stands there and hurls himself over the mound trying to get some life on that fastbal. Bruce Bowb bangs into every player out there in the name of defence.

Whatever.

The only thing I'm worried about is that Popovich will take away Kobe's passing lanes and he'll have to force passes or make shots. If he's shooting well early it'll open up the whole floor for our offence.

Andrew should take it at their bigs. Pau should keep on truckin' en espanol. The bench should get their effecient and run the offence socks on.

GO LAKERS!!!!

Also in regards to PJ's retirement, there was an article on Truehoop today. Kurt Heinlin of Forum B&G was analyzing the issue of a new coach.

In the midst of proboble championship contention, would the lakers promote one of the assistant coaches to head coach, and keep the triangle offense, that this team is built upon, and everyone is comfortable with.

Or would they hire a new coach, Byron Scott was named (he is a laker for life), be able to come in and succesfully integrate their principles into the team?

Interesting stuff? Triangle or no triangle?

Gotta love Magic on ESPN. Except I thought the game was 12:30 West Coast time?

Jamie, the game is most definitely 12:30 PM PST on ABC, and I can't wait for some revenge!

There's only one thing that worry's me about the game against the spur's. Bruce Bowen we all know what a dirty player he is,so it won't
surprise me if on the first play if he take's a hard swipe at kobe's hand, because they know they can't gaurd him. Other than that i'm not really worried about this game. Might be close first three quarter's than laker's will open it up.

Here's hoping this team gells, wins a title, and Phil stays on for a nice run of titles. Phil's approach to the game and to mtoivation and "internal" issues is definately different from other guys, easy to second guess, but it works, over and over again. Phil takes teams that are close and pushes them over the top.

Preseason, did Phil and Pop trade off the facial hair?

Today is a good day for Bynum to play well against class.

Gotta agree with the ranter....this is basically a non-story. All it says is what we already knew...that PJ is in control of his own destiny. The job is his for as long as he wants it. It must be nice to have the world on a string.

In today's gaime, I hope we remember how we defended against Ginobli during the playoffs -- funnel him to the right side where he is less comfortable....

LG,

I feel you on hating the Celtics especially KG with a deepseeded passion! I hate the Cavs too, as well as Dwades Heat and I am also starting to have a sincere disdain for Dwight Howard, who is forever mocking some other player whether its mimicking the hand thing that Shaq used to do after a dunk or a jump hook, his hulk posing gesture he stole from Kobe after a dunk or play, or his impersonations of others players or people. While I agree players should have fun, enjoy the game, he is over the top I say cuz he is always swaggerjacking on somebody else ISH..Get your OWN, I say!

Regarding PJ's 'retirement' comments -- I think he has seen that the future of the NBA is with LBJ and he is just positioning himself to be available to coach LeCrab...

Good Morning, Laker Nation!

It's game day!

It's time for...

Jon K.'s Early Thoughts That He Has Not Put Too Much Thought Into Yet:

1. I hope Phil Jackson coaches another three or four years for the Lakers.

2. Wow. After next year, Phil will have coached more years for the Lakers than he did for the Bulls.

3. We're playing the forever hated, yet grudgingly respected, San Antonio Spurs today. Big game.

4. As much as I hate to admit it, Tim Duncan is my most respected non-Laker/non-Clipper in the NBA. The guy's good.

5. Since Tim Duncan is so damned good also we're going to see also how good Andrew Bynum is today.

6. What is Rad Vlad doing showing up an hour late for shoot-around? I don't like that at all.

7. I also don't like Lamar grabbing his crotch during the Clippers game. We're not the Celtics. We don't do that crap.

8. Let's get some minutes for Josh Powell and/or Chris Mihm today!

9. I hope Luke Walton starts today. We play better when he starts.

10. I don't understand why the L.A. Times doesn't fire its entire sports staff (except the Kamenetsky Brothers) and hire Kevin Ding. It would be an improvement.

11. Clippers are playing the Warriors tonight, still down 8 players. Just insane. At least Gordon, Thornton, and Jordan are developing as a result. With everyone healthy we could be above .500 for the second half of the year.

12. I hope Kobe Bryant keeps up his Jerry West impersonation. I could get used to this.

13. Things overheard last night from Cavs fans during the Cavs game: "LeBron is such a whiner! Can't he just play ball?" and "I've never seen a team travel as much as the Cavs do."

14. We have The Machine back. It should mean that we have a good game today.

15. Let's hope that the rafters shake with noise today! The crowd makes a difference. REAL FANS MAKE NOISE!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

The Snake,

Give me a break.

DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!

The Crab King is the most over-rated player in the NBA.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forvever.

GO LAKERS!

The Snake - I'd respectfully have to disagree... I don't see Jackson being a head coach again after the Lakers... I'm assuming of course that you're saying he'd move to the Knicks along with LeBron. A number of years back, he came here for the opportunity to coach Shaq. I doubt that he'd find himself at that type of mindset again. He seems to have reached a point where he'd like to win another ring or two with the Lakers and then either retire or move to another position within the organization. I think he has an honest and deep-rooted affection for this team and don't see him moving to greener pastures.

LG,

I've heard that Byron Scott is a real taskmaster as a coach. He seems like he's the kind of coach that's good at taking a young, undiscliplined team and bringing them to a contender level, but he's not a Championship coach, because after the team loses the champsion/doesn't make it to the Finals... his players stop listening to him because he is so strict.

That's what happened in New Jersey.

That seems like what's happening in New Orleans.

So... I think Kurt Rambis or Jim Cleammons are better bets.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

looking for a good win today...

Add me to the list of people saying this PJ thing is a non-story. Him saying he wants to play out his contract and go from there is far from him saying he's going to retire. So, all the people who were doing backflips in their mother's basements after hearing PJ announced his retirement *cough* pfunk *cough* are going to have to temper their enthusiasm until he offers something more definitive.

I'm watching the Boston-Dallas game and Dirk is getting exposed big time. The Big Streudel is laying a big fat egg so far with his poor shooting, poor defense and mistakes.

Scalabrine is fat and goofy.

Come on guys, you know Phil Jackson would not answer such a big question like that.
If anything Phil Jackson, is just playing mind games as usual.
I won't believe it until i see It.

Jon K,

I agree for the most part. I haven't really seen Byron Scott as a proven coach. Until he wins a championship he probobly isn't who we want coaching the lakers.

I hope PJ continues to coach for the next couple of years. Didn't every one already know about his contract? He basically said what everyone already knew, and the media span it into a story.

"Scalabrine is fat and goofy" - LOL
Too bad the Celtics are destroying the Mavs, I was hoping for an upset.

LG

PJ has always shown his predilection for coaching superstars in their prime years. MJ in his prime in Chicago, Shaq in his prime during the 3-peat years, and Kobe in his prime at the present time. He realizes that 2 years from now Kobe’s skills will start to decline. For PJ to coach a superstar in his declining years is just not in his pattern. He is prepping us for the inevitable ‘retirement’.

But here is the scenario – after next year, PJ announces his ‘retirement’ and recluses himself in Montana (sounds familiar?). In the meantime, NYK lands LBJ in a blockbuster FA deal. But his first year with NYK is a bust and the unforgiving New York press demand the coach’s head on a silver platter. A ground swell builds up for the return of New York’s prodigal son (PJ was a Knick) to coach LBJ. PJ is ‘convinced’ to come out of retirement with a contract he could not refuse and once again gets a chance to coach a superstar in his prime. PJ returns to the Gah-den and LBJ thrives in the triangle. PJ later retires to write a best-seller on ‘How I Brought Out the Best in Michael, Shaq, Kobe and LeBron’.

"The Big Streudel ..." I love it!!!

We need to beat crap out of Spurs, let them know, last game was refs aided fluk, it's not going to be repeat of this. Besides big 3, Lakers needs to aknowledge, this Matt Boner guy and guard him without living open for 3s. He is done it against us and Phoenix game too.

Phil Jackson was a great coach from 2000 to 2003 and then not so great after that. Haha, that's the LA kind of measurement, only good when you're winning, don't care less when you're losing. Well, people here don't question his pay which is actually double than most coaches. The long time don't care of his affiliation as a player which is the Knicks or his Bulls affiliation, as long as you do your job of winning, you're OK even if you play Luke for 40 minutes, it is all about winning that's the mentality of a big city. If Phil Jackson was small franchise like the Thunder it would be a great honor while here in LA, he has given them three championships, he's just considered one of the best. We come to ball games late and we leave the game five minutes before the finish if the spread is 10 pts more or less, however, it is a city that pays premium for quality players and coaches

What's up with the Kamenetsky Brothers being so late today?

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

lakers_sth:

I agree, Scalabrine is a fat ass, still tryna figure how he is even an NBA player....

I hate the Celtics!

The Spurs have not played the Lakers in the latest surge of Bynum as well as Lamar active from end to end. AB found himself with his pivot moves, uses the board as his ally. Lamar is asserting his height, his heightened activity with ambidextrous layups. Ariza is enfant terrible with his defense, inside games as well as perimeter perfection, Sasha is gaining confidence with his machine-like performan. Lakers are playing at home, I don't see any distinct advantage of Spurs winning tonight. If ever they succeed, it is pure carelessness and over confidence on the part of the Lakers. At this stage, I don't see any Western team winning against the Lakers at Staples, it has to be at their home turf with the support of their home crowd.

Jon K,

Late with what?

AK

The Snake,

Give it up.

The Lakers will be the last team Phil Jackson coaches.

He's 64 and will be 65 when his present contract ends.

He has a ranch in Montana and has been living in sin with Jeannie Buss in their house in Playa del Rey for years.

He had his hips replaced recently.

Do you honestly think after all he has accomplished, the relationships he's established in Los Angeles, the lifestyle he's established, his age, and his health issues, that he's going to get up and move to New York to begin a rebuilding process with LeBron James?

If you do, then you're out of your cotton-picking mind!

This guy has coached the best and been the best! LeBron James simply isn't enough of a player for Phil Jackson to change his whole life for him.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!!

Hey AK,

Usually you guys have a morning "It's a new day and Laker Nation and here what we're talking about" thread up by now.

This present thread was established yesterday.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

AK

I meant, "It's a new day in Laker Nation and here's what we're talking about" thread up by now.

I hate it when I do stupid typos. A symptom of typing too fast.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

lakers_sth....

I was watching the opening game on ABC today and came to the same conclusion about Dirk. At 7 foot, he provides absolutely ZERO inside presence for the Mavs. Mark Cuban should fire himself and let someone with some real Bball knowledge take over. This team of his has absolutely no heart and it starts with Dirk.

Jon K,

It's a morning game and I have to leave a good two hours before the game starts to be there for anything pregame. It doesn't leave a ton of time to do a typical pregame and frankly, that thread tends to get overshadowed very quickly by the live blogs and postgame reports. So we typically don't do one for games like these.

AK

Pretty pumped about this game. REVENGE!!! Unleash the Beast on the Spurs. Please don't let me down Drew. I'm hoping we get a got mix of Kobe Nash/Mr. 81 today with a very nice helping of Ariza throwdowns and a side of LO aggression.

GO LAKERS

AK,

Okay.

It's cool.

Thanks for the clarification.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

What we are watching right now with the Celtics/Mavericks game is the consequences of the Gasol trade.

It was such a league shaking event that it caused Mark Cuban and the Suns to panic. As a result, both the Mavs and the Suns will be lucky to make it into the playoffs this year.

Sweet, sweet providence.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

As much as I love watching Mark Cuban brooding like a dejected Ivan the Terrible on the sidelines, I hate watching the Celtics win even more.

I guess nothing is perfect in life.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

LG,

As a Los Angelenan living in exile in the frozen grey decaying wastes of Northeast Ohio, I think I have a special insight into the situation with the Cavs.

Out here, Cavs fans break into two types: 1) LeBroniacs 2) Healthy Cavs fans.

LeBroniacs belong to a cult of personality which seduces them into the delusion that LeBron James is LITERALLY the Greatest player of all time--past, present, and future. There's no reasoning with them and any weakness attributed to LeBron James and/or the Cavs is explained as a conspiracy created by David Stern to protect the major teams and the media legacy of Michael Jordan.

Healthy Cavs fans can be reasoned with an offer the MOST objective assessment of LeBron James and the Cavs. In my conversation with "healthy Cavs fans", they believe that the Cavs are one of the best teams in the East and they have a strong possibility of making the Finals this year. (By no means a guaranteed conclusion.) The Cavs are as good as they are this year not necessarily because of LeBron James, but because his teammates have stepped up their play this year, particularly on the offensive end. LeBron James is incredible (in their minds), but he is an athlete first and a basketball player second. They believe he badly wants to win, but sometimes question his true desire. They also note that he travels constantly, but is rarely called for it, and that he unnecessarily complains whenever he is called for ANYTHING or if the other team plays him physically.

Though I am not a Cavs fan, I generally agree with most of the concensus assessments of "Healthy Cavs fans" because that is what I see, too.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

Looks like we got the 3 Amigos broadcasting the game. I got to mute the TV.

Guys I think we learned something today. First of all, nobody can F with us in the west. Spurs are done, they barely won getting all the calls in San Antonio. And in La when we get some calls they get smashed. Parker is ineffective against our bigs and Duncan is mortal now. I luv it, goliath has officially been knocked out. As for the rest of the west, they are all 1 to 2 players away from being on the championship contender level. We will trule he west, EASY the next few years, hands down.

As for the East, and folks its prediction time, I say this 6 game road trip coming will determine whether or not we win the whole thing. I know its still 1st half of the season but we know that if we can stay healthy our defense improves dramatically. And #1 offense plus great defense does equal championship. We need to beat Boston and Cleveland on this road trip, or at least play tough both games and win 1 out of the 2.

Individually, Bynum we love you! He is the reason why we were the favorites when the year started. He had to play like last year before the injury to push us over the top and dammit hes doing just that. He is showing us why we needed to sign him early and why he should be an all star for seasons to come. Bynum the beast? If he keeps playin like this that's exactly what he is. He needs to get double doubles every game and be a dominant force on both ends of court. He's doing that, and the last week or so he gets an A+ in my book. My mother and grandfather are going to see Kareem Thursday at the Harlem Renaissance exhibit in Bakersfield and I might just tell my mom to kiss Kareem for his work with Bynum. Good job by the whole Laker family.

Also, I gotta say this and I want everybody to join me on this. Lamar Odom has to stay. I know he's not Scottie Pippen but dare I say he could be so much more. He leads the huddle before the game, I love watchin that. He boards like a crazy man. He drives to the hole, he shoots better from the outside. He really does do it all, and if he takes less money like he has said he would- SIGN HIM. If we kept this group intact for the next 5 years? Wow what a thought. Yes we gotta sign Ariza and Kobe in the off-season. But LAMAR ODOM needs to be on the priority list as well. If I'm Phil, Mitch, or Buss right now I tell him that if he keeps up the good work then he's staying with the team.

Finally I want to add that it was soo nice to see Farmar back and playing well. UCLA is really representin right now Laker fans. Bench mob is back and its better than ever. I sense a nice win streak coming up. GO Lakers.
