Undefeated in the '09: Lakers 113, Jazz 100

These winning ways feel so "2008."

Three Good

  • Kobe Bryant:  Kobe must dig that whole "Western Conference Player of the Month" thing, because he kicked off January with a very strong bid for retaining his prestige.  The Mamba notched the Lakers' opening pair of buckets (one a nine-foot jumper, the other a running dunk) and from there, never lost an offensive groove.  His 40 points were the result of both efficiency (13-23 from the field) and sensible distance (the majority of his shots were mid-range or closer).  That insistence on tight proximity to the rim led to fourteen stripe attempts (a dozen successful), further proof of Mr. Bean controlling this game.  But lest anybody think he was all about O, Kobe made his presence felt on D, snaring seven boards, blocking a shot and harassing Deron Williams down the stretch that amounted in a ginormous turnover.

There was also a bit of playground to Kobe's game tonight.  Some extra flourish on the dunks.  A pair of theatrical fake passes while airborne.  Some interaction with the courtside patrons.  Hey, if you're gonna impress the award voting committee, a little extra flair never hurt, right?
  • Pau Gasol:  El Spaniard's night was, in many ways, a smaller scale Xerox of Kobe's.  He wasn't quite as tidy from the field (6-13), but made up for it with a similar propensity for drawing fouls, getting to the line eleven times and, like El Mamba, connecting on all but two.  21 points to complement eleven boards and six assists, the latter stat often accumulated through impressive two-man work with Bryant.  The duo worked screen and rolls, give and go's and even teamed to scoop up a loose ball (which Pau shuttled to Kobe for a contested three), their fairly remarkable chemistry in full effect.  A fun night for Gasol as he became just the fourth European player to hit the 10,000 point mark.
  • Trevor Ariza: His night already saw some great moments during the opening three quarters.  A terrific pass to set up a Sasha Vujacic 23-footer.  A bunny-hopped, double-clutched floater in the lane.  Canning the open trey offered.  Just wrapping up the night with twelve points and nine boards (three offensive) off the bench would have been pretty good in and of itself.  But down the stretch in the fourth, Ariza played hero in a big way.  With two minutes and change left and Utah having cut the Laker lead to six, TA forced a pair of turnovers that he took down court for layups, one being of the "and one" variety.  That pair of steals- Ariza had a season-high five on the evening- pushed the Lakers back to an eleven point lead over a span of just 19 seconds, essentially icing the contest in L.A.'s favor.

Early in the season, I remember reading a GM poll that ranked Ariza among the NBA's best at playing the passing lanes.  You'll get no argument from Phil Jackson.  "Trevor takes risks at times, but he's very limited in the risks he takes.  Obviously, 'steals' is not the perfect analysis of good defense, but in his case, he anticipates well.  When he a person crosses over, he has very quick reflexes.  He's a cobra out there and he just strikes and takes that ball.  He's terrific at it."

Three Bad

  • The Second Half: PJ has a deep and rich voice, its slow, measured tones often fairly soothing, which makes for quite the pleasant listening experience before and after a game.  But I'm wondering if that timbre created a halftime speech a little too easy-like-a-Sunday-morning, because the Lakers hit the third quarter hardwood alarmingly relaxed.  Their 57-43 advantage appeared the work of an entirely different team, dwindling away due to suddenly frigid shooting and a defense lacking in rotation, paint protection and general intensity.

Lamar Odom and Trevor Ariza's insertion with around five minutes to go seemed to get things on the right track, but the ensuing final period kicked off another collapse.  A fifteen point lead shriveled down to eight before Kobe and Pau reentered the fray to restore order.  Thankfully, the Lakers took care of business when it mattered most.  But that doesn't change the fact that without a stellar opening 24 minutes, the results could have been less favorable.  Or at the very least, MUCH too close for comfort.
  • Andrew Bynum: The eight points could be written off as simply an unremarkable effort. But two boards from your starting seven-foot center?  That couldn't be explained away in the days of Kwame Brown.  Throw in a painted area that was attacked like a club hopping Keith Closs during the third quarter disintegration (and turned considerably less vulnerable upon Drew's benching) and this won't end up a box score pinned on Sly and the Family Bynum's fridge.
  • Three point shooting: On the plus side, seventeen bombs more or less represents the number a somewhat "far line" averse PJ is cool with.  On the minus side, the Lakers made only three, and two of the makes belonged to Kobe.  Sasha Vujacic was particularly "oh-fer," striking out on five occasions.

One issue

  • The power of making your "bad" not "awful": Make no mistake.  The Lakers played a considerably worse second half than the first. But even while struggling, the Lakers didn't do screw up enough to truly kill themselves.  For example, the third quarter saw them allow fourteen paint points without a ton of resistance.  But that aside, they limited the Jazz to 36% shooting, matched Utah's fifteen boards and only turned the ball over three times.  In other words, they didn't allow themselves to get buried.  Ditto a fourth quarter while outscored 34-32.  Utah's 56% shooting obviously represented a defensive collapse of sorts, but the Lakers got to the line eighteen times and forced four turnovers against only two of their own.  And even during this second half of floundering, Utah never got with a layup of tying the game.

Against a quality team like the Jazz, the difference between surviving runs and coughing up a loss can be the magnitude of your mishaps.  In the Lakers' case, they was enough to bend, but only mildly threaten a break.

Pau Gasol

Trevor Ariza

Good win to start 2009 right.KOBE display why he's still the best player in the world.Hopefully our player will stay healthy to continue their development as a team to propel their true destiny as a champion for 2009.A lot of amazing buzzer beaters tonight around the league.I cant wait to see our Lakers play against the ugly Lebron and the cavs,I think KOBE will beat him again as MVP this year,im predicting KOBE to up his game a notch higher than anybody.hopefully our Lakers will beat those ugliest cavs and arrogant, cocky, ugliest celtics again so that they will shut up specially KG the yapping ugly Garnett.

AK:

Read my previous posts on AB. I'm sure AB's non-productive & foul laces trend is a big concern of Phil & Mitch. Frankly, I have no answer why AB's plays are so bad! He seems indifference and not buy in the program. Very disappointing indeed after promising start (Before signing the big contract).

Lakers will probably win the Western Conference easily but they will need AB at his best to conquer the beasts of the East, namely Celtics, Cav and Magics. We haven't seen much of DJ lately but I'm certain that the Lakers won't get much from the injury prone Mihm.

*Yawn*

Is it June yet?

Good Morning Charles...Good Morning Everyone....

enjoyable game last night seemingly...even though the Jazz got close a few times I didn't really feel any concern, I had the feeling we could do about anything we wanted and at times, unfortunately, so did the Lakers---

of course if we had converted free throws better the lead would never have been remotely challanged---PRACTICE !

No tacos---shouldn't there be defensive schemes that preserve the tacos?---with a three point cushion, maybe they should have gave up a two or fouled....hopefully this is addressed in game film....

even against suposed top level teams, focus will continue to be a challange, especially with a big early lead etc.

our defense looked better, I like more of the man on man coupled with some help zone--maybe we are starting to grasp it better...

not too much to make fun of, other than that big guy they have with the funny name-- I was surprised that he could remain upright with the weight of his nose fighting the laws of gravity...

I did think more of our bench should have played more (Powell especially of course)...

Ultimately, I still see a team that is growing, learning, and is going to get a LOT better---a lot better----mmm mmm scarey good !

AS ALWAYS, AS EVER, YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY (AND SEASON) TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!

GO LAKERS !!!

Some of the best discoveries are purely accidental.

While watching the game last night and fighting a cold, I decided to hit the sack at half time.

Seemed like the safe thing to do. Healthy lead, solid defense, Kobe in control.

So instead of my usual single malt Scotch at the half, I downed two fingers of Nyquil, neat, no soda, and twenty minutes later I was into some sweet Lakers sleep.

This morning I get up, check the score, Lakers win by 13. Yup, a beat down of the 'righteously hated' Salt Lickers. Until..... I watch the 2nd half on my DIRECTV HD DVR only to find out, the Lakers TWICE, lost big leads, and sort of, almost lost the game, only to win by a large margin in the end.

So what's the amazing accidental discovery?

You don't have to be Einstein or Luke Walton to figure this one out.

Whenever the Lakers get a big, nearly insurmountable lead, simply turn the game off.

No stress of blown leads, watching them go lazy and un-focused on D, and no yelling at a stubborn PJ to call a time out. He does hear you yelling at him you know. Watch how he crosses his arms, sits back, and gets that smug look on his face.

Instead you will leave the TV feeling great that the Lakers pulverized the opposition and they are truly one of the best teams of all time, a real unbeatable Juggernaut.

In the end, all that counts is the 'W'. Its not how they almost didn't get the win, or they blew the Tacos,(Booo!!) its just knowing they won and feeling good about it.

Fatty - Who also feels the two greatest Discoveries of the 20th Century are auto AC's and Nyquil.

Hey Adrian,

What of this "ugliest" thing about...? Have you got a man crush on LB and KG..?

Just kidding....

Where are the trolls..? I missed Butler.. especially him and LGC's... :)

All is good in laker world...

Go lakers... Go Kobe...

Kobe was real efficient yet again. AK could this be the year Kobe gets very close to 50% FG%?

Again the rebounding from Drew is so puzzling. Everyone save for Sasha got more rebounds than Bynum. Heck even Luke Walton, who only played 15 minutes, managed to snag more than double Drew's amount. If he wants to play defense that's fine but he has to show more aggressiveness in hitting the boards. In fact he's not even the Lakers leading rebounder, Pau Gasol is. Bynum is much stronger than Pau yet not snagging more boards than a finesse power forward (granted Pau did lift even more the offseason after the Olympics). What does that mean:

1) Not bringing as much energy. The best energy game I saw from him was against the Celtics. But he needs to bring it every game not just the important ones. Energy=better defense and offense.
2) Not taking as much effort on the boards. Bynum is hella strong not to mention hella tall. And that gives him a huge edge in getting rebounds. (8 rebounds per game so far). But he could do better. Dwight Howard ala Superman is so active and is pulling 14 a game. Howard probably will be a better rebounder than Shaq though won't probably reach Chamberlain or Russell. Bynum is using too much of his body instead of trying to truly snag the rebounds. Kobe is 6'6 and hits the boards hard and got 7 rebounds per game at one point. If Bynum had Kobe's activeness, he would be so much better at the boards/defense.
3) Passiveness. Drew has so much more potential yet he doesn't use it. Sure he is averaging close to last year but last year he was the 2nd option and Pau is a much better option in almost every way save for post defense. He won't average 20 and 10 but he can average at least 15 if he was more active. Lamar Odom after the Pau Gasol trade flourished getting 16ppg, 12rpg, and shooting a phenomenal 60% since he was no longer targeted as the 2nd option plus him moving without the ball made him even better. Drew has to do a better job at "moving without the ball" and get himself at a position where he can dunk it. Plus he is too much reliant on Kobe and Pau to set him up instead of creating opportunities where they can find him easily for a high % shot. When he does get the ball and decides to take it in, he is too much out of the block and instead settles for hook shots when he could get closer and dunk it. Drew can do it but he's too much standing around waiting to be the reciepent of Kobe's penetration or Pau's skillful passing. Until then, team's won't fear him as much and he can be easily neutralized and won't be fronted as much (when he is and there is no back side help an easy dunk for him).

Drew has what it takes but he simply is not finding the right way to become a good center and instead just willing to be a screener and the recipient of alley oops.

For "moving without the ball thing" this is a good example

http://tinyurl.com/7qw3wc

Now Rip/Ray Ray/Reggie Miller are perimeter players so Bynum should not do that what Rip Hamilton is doing lol But the idea is that even after setting screens he should make a cut to the basket or should be fighting to get positions on the block. If he does that more with more energy, I guarantee that Bynum would get closer to the basket when the ball is given to him and increase his scoring opportunities.

Defense is powered by energy and fundamentals. Ronny had the energy but didn't have good fundamentals. He was very foul prone and wasn't much of a defender beyond shot blocking. Drew has the fundamentals, it's right there and he's using them. The only problem is that his energy is inconsistent with the skill. It's like him doing nice moves with his car but doesn't have the gasoline to make it run. If Drew played with more energy, the defense would improve dramatically and he could possibly be a All Defense team candidate.

Drew is doing a fine job so far and this game he will rebound from it I'm sure. It's just some games he'll come out with great energy and emphasis on the fundamentals while other times he'll just relax and be passive.

Anyways Portland next and it will be another win as long as Roy is contained.

I don't know what happen to my post sent earlier. I have one more observation on the game last night, we do need a reliable back up PG to take the load off D'Fish. The offense is a bit sputter there, don't you think? It's sad that the leading assist person on the Lakers is Kobe who is also a leading scorer for the team. His APG is 4.3. Phil should try Sun at the PG position now that Sasha hasn't regained his shooting touches and ability to make plays for others.

How can Andrew have two boards in 25 minutes? What is that? Kid is not the same player he was last year, not even close. Why? I would hate to think it's because he showed enough to get that big contract and now he's gonna become Kwame redux.

I'm just preplexed watching him out there. He doesn't have the fire, the tenacity the spirit to compete he had last year. That more than anything scares me about him. Forget about scoring, dude should pull 10 boards and 3 bliks a game without breaking a sweat. 2 rebounds is an embarassment. He also doesn't block out and lets smaller guys out position him. Hello Kareem? Where are you?

lakers_sth-

From the last thread: Yea, I had the under 208.5 last night. Bookmakers were pretty much right on with that one. I figured the Lakers were going to come out cold since they had so many days off, the complete opposite happened. It was still close at the end though.

I haven't been betting too much this year but last year I was betting on almost every NBA game. The halftime line always saved me. You get a feel for the game and I find it easier to bet.

My big bet this year was OJ Mayo to win ROY at 4.5-1 odds. He has since moved down to 1.5-1 odds. Hopefully he can outplay Rose down the stretch.

Anyways, good luck with all your bets.

more thoughts....

Pau may be vying for the point guard position--cool play of the game...

I am not really worried about the Jazz and it almost bothers me, it seems I should be...

Sunday's game will be a very interesting and perhaps a telling rematch of opening night...

I think Bynum will emerge by the end of the season and no team in the play offs will have an answer for him, let alone our other players they have no answer for now will be that much stronger etc...

I can understand and indeed share some of the concern for Bynum's play, but ultimately I have a very good feeling about his future development--I think he wants to be great (not just good) and that will eventually be the determining factor of him getting his game together....it just might not happen fast enough for a lot of us, but as I said, I do think by the end of season we will indeed see Laker Tom's Beast rip the throats and beating hearts out of our opponents on a regular basis...

GO LAKERS !!!

Another good win. Yes Utah cut into the lead, maybe a little too much, but Utah is a legitimate NBA team, even if they are struggling a bit now. When you go on a run and take a big lead, a good NBA team will respond and Utah did. The Lakers had an answer every time they did and ended up with a nice 13 pt. advantage.

It would be nice if every 20 point lead became a 40 point lead, but they almost never do. Games have ebbs and flows to them and the team that is down will usually fight back. I'd rather be the team taking and defending leads every time.

I remember the great Lakers of the 80s often toyed with teams and put them away late in the 3rd Q or in the 4th. They lost now and then to teams they shouldn't. It's a long NBA season. This was agood win against solid team with a winning record.

With their win vs. Utah, the Lakers have extended their lead over Celtics and Cavs in wins over quality opponents.

The Lakers have won 12 games against teams with winning records (5 on the road). Boston only have 10, and just 3 on the road while the Cavs had the easiest schedule with only 7 wins against winning teams (just 2 on the road).

Without a doubt, the Lakers are currently the best NBA team.

Great post game breakdown with one exception. Why even mention Luke as a source of information on team development and future? I personally find it odd that out of all people to talk to in regards to the development of this team Luke is used as a source of information to get a growth perspective. Next time ask him what he thinks about the seat cushions in his recliner.

Gotta love the great win over Utah. Two favorite highlights: Trevor those last minutes and Pau dribbling down the court with the between the legs and behind the back. It was awesome to watch!!!

Trailblazers next! Can't wait!!!

GO LAKERS!
I LOVE LA!!

*click on my name to see some great photos of last years LAL-NOH matchup in LA*

Undefeated in 2009 LET KEEP IT UP!!!!

I hate trolls and do not want to complain. But here is my beef.

I am very disappointed with the play of Andrew Bynum. He had three blocked shots and I love him for that, but he needs to develop some skills.

If I had Kareem teaching me for three years, I would expect to have a couple of go to shots. He only has the dunk. And last night he tried some fade away spin moves that I KNOW the cap did not recommend.

Bynum relentlessly gets the ball at 10 feet out and looks to pass. Comparing him with the swiss army knife of options Gasol and Bryant has makes me despair. Even Luke has more tools in his belt.

I am desperately trying to remember the first half of last season. He seemed have some moves. If so, what happened????? AK / BK anyone, what gives????

I push this point because I think his being an offensive threat would seal our Championship. No one could touch us if he lived up to his potential. But night in and night out he leaves me more worried than assured.

I need a glimmer of hope. But rest assured, if he is only a dunker, I think I can still push us over the top with RALLY CAPS!

GOOooooOOOO LAKERS!!!!

Jon K.'s Early Thoughts That He Has Not Put Too Much Thought Into Yet:

1. Despite everything, still a good win last night over a quality Utah team.

2. Obviously, we have to work on not letting these leads slip. The Kraken needs minutes!

3. I'm very disappointed by Andrew Bynum's effort. 8 points, 2 BOARDS (?!?!?!?!?), no offensive boards and 4 fouls. If Kwame Brown was still on this team, he would have put in a much better effort, by comparison. In all seriousness, if that's Andrew Bynum's production on a certain night, we should put Chris Mihm in. He'd do better than that. I hope in practice Phil Jackson puts Chris Mihm and Pau Gasol in together so they can get used to playing together.

4. I think Phil Jackson's words have made it official. Trevor Ariza is no longer "The Ghost", he now is "The Cobra".

5. I am absolutely amazed that the Clippers have as many injuries as they do. Just crazy. I'm not one to ascribe "randomness" to injuries. Before Donald Sterling fires Mike Dunleavy, he should fire his entire training staff. Ridiculous.

6. You know, there are multiple players on this team whose jersey we COULD see retired. Kobe is obviously having his jersey retired. If Pau Gasol has a long Laker career, he could have his jersey retired. And Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom, and Derek Fisher are all possibilities for having their jersies retired, depending how the next few years go. Special times are happening now.

7. We really need a good nickname for this present team. "Showtime" has already happened and is/was a very special and unique team. This team is special and unique. They need their own name. We can't just call them "Showtime II." It's not fair to either team. I suggested "Gotime!" but no one seems to like that. Any suggestions?

8. So, it looks like 72-10 isn't so likely, but 70-12 could happen. Though, in all honesty, if this team starts playing up to their potential and stops blowing leads, then 72-10 COULD really happen.

9. I won't even begin the complaints about the lack of panache of the Kamenetsky Brothers; however, I will begin complaining about the 1000 yard stare over my shoulder of AK. In the videos, BK speaks directly to the viewer and looks engaged, while AK stares over the viewer's left shoulder and looks like he's shyly fixated on a Laker girl seated somewhere 100 yards behind you. Come on, AK! If you're going to become a successful ESPN talking head, you're going to have to learn to engage the camera.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

Jon K.'s Addendum To His Simple Thoughts:

1. Methinks it's time to do a Bio-Chrono analysis about Andrew Bynum's uninspired play. Remember, he's about confidence, trust, understanding, and faith. These are his motivating factors.

2. I can't wait to play the Trailblazers.

3. I'm also looking forward to more wins with Luke Walton starting. Slowly it will shut up the Haters.

4. I like the fact that the Lakers are held to a higher "taco" standard. It's just plain cool.

5. It seems like Laker Nation always needs to have ONE player to complain about. It looks like Andrew Bynum is dangerously close to being that player.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

I'm running errands last night before the game up here in Portland...last stop: Starbucks for my wife/cocoa for my boy...wearing my psyche(won't give it away, but it says Lakers on it...and we haven't lost since I put it on before each game)

I'm coming toward the door, a drink in each hand...two young guys coming in...one comes in, the other stays outside...and shuts the door in my face...
"F*** the Lakers old man..."
Must be a native, because he says this standing right in front of the door...one kick and it opens...into his face...
He and his buddy are none too pleased...according to them, I like to have various kinds of sex with my late mother...and orally copulate men...
However, this is Portland, so....all bark, no bite...

The stories I could tell of what has happened to my wife and kids when we used to go to games up here...we don't anymore...the fans up here are...well, let me tell you a story...

Playoffs 2000...I use the entire tax refund to get seats to a game up here for my wife and I...she's never seen a game live...good seats...7 rows back, behind the Laker bench...guy two rows behind spends most of the fourth quarter yelling at Ron Harper...making fun of his speech impediment...after the game,(we won) He's still yelling at Harp...Harp invites him down...guy won't go...I try and persuade him to go meet Harp and say this sh** to his face...he decides not to take Harp up on it...

This wasn't some cheap-seat drunk...he was a high-level businessman...

I really want the guys to beat Portland...bad...

I respect the players and coaches for Portland...good young team...can't stand most of the fans...and the announcers are the WORST in the NBA...it's not a national game, so we won't get it on League Pass...have to listen to those clowns all night...did I mention they're really bad?

Maybe it's time he moved out, if you know what I mean.

strange days indeed...

my second post appeared before my first post making my title of "more thoughts" a little odd, but giving the title of this post more than a little validity as it were, seemingly...

Is there an FNG on the posting blog machine?

GO LAKERS !!!

Regarding Bynum's lack of activity last night. Last night was the first time post-injury I have seen him play without a brace on his knee. I think fear of reinjury without the psychological crutch of the brace may have reduced his activity level. However it is good he is playing without a brace even if it takes him several games to get past the mental fear factor.

some further thoughts from the further bus (making Ken and his Merry Prankster friends quite proud indeed)....

Bynum has shown us some great post moves and footwork in the past, just not lately...it seems if he gets an early travel call he doesn't keep working his post moves as much---that coupled with him maybe not getting the ball in his ideal post /rhythm position etc.

I do like that free throw line elbow jump shot he has made fairly consistenly (even the Jazz anouncers said if he really develops that shot opposing teams would really have problems etc.)---maybe if he took a few more of those in a game then he could use that success to crash the rim and create his own driving dunks etc.

I still think he does have some very servicible post moves and a soft touch--maybe we have too many options / weapons on this team (that's probably a good thing though) that don't allow Bynum enough touches etc.

On other teams Bynum would be the main offensive focus and his post play would definitly flourish...

As I said before, I think patience should be our mantra---the reward will come, and again I think it will come this year....

"I want a short haired girl that sometimes wears it twice as long"

"but follow if only you be men of valour...."

GO LAKERS !!!

there's a sign post up ahead department...

now my posts are in the correst order making my "strange days indeed" post seem even stranger still...

" I thought to myself what could that mean, am I going crazy or is it just a dream...now wait a minute I know I'm laying in a field of grass somewhere, so it's all in my head...and then...I heard her say ...one more time...spill the wine, take that pearl..."

GO LAKERS !!!

Christopher Blake,

I feel for you brother---I have lots of relatives in Portland
--I have to deal with obnoxious Jazz fans here in Southeast Idaho, but you have to deal with probably the worst fans in the NBA (they think, and I mean REALLY think, that their players NEVER foul)---keep the faith and thanks for representing the Lakers in the Land of Port....

Do the locals actually think their announcers are good or are they embarassed as they should be?

Portland used to have a pretty decent guy--long timer like Chick--he coined the Rip City thing years ago---guess he died (?)...

GO LAKERS !!!

Christopher Blake

"wearing my psyche(won't give it away, but it says Lakers on it...and we haven't lost since I put it on before each game)"

Does it have anything to do with Mamba24's thong?

And is it true you haven't washed it since the Lakers last loss?

And is it also true your wife won't let you sleep in the same room with her until you burn it in the Fireplace?

Portland announcers: The fans are just imitating those guys. I fear they could some day be cited for inciting a riot. I hate it when I have to listen to them on the NBA Pass.

I wish DIRECTV would give us the option of each teams announcers like they do on the MLB Pass.

Fatty - Warning everyone to stay at least 50 feet away from Christopher until that 'thingy' gets burned.

So last night I was watching the game on justin tv which obviously doesn't possess the sharpest image around anyway... but with around 4 minutes left, my internet decided to crash and by the time I re-booted, the game was over. So, I missed the Ariza plays at the end. Urgh.

A couple observations: Fish played a lot of minutes once again. Why didn't Sasha play more - was it a matchup situation? Was it because Fish knows Williams' game so well from his stint in Utah?

Second observation naturally is Bynum... I can only echo what others are saying - the motivation just doesn't seem to be there... karmadog's take on the knee brace was interesting but I can't help thinking about Chris Mihm - that guy endured so many operations, so much pain with his foot and ankle and he has trained and rehabbed relentlessly just for the OPPORTUNITY to play... and he's sitting there on the bench, night after night, watching, not complaining... and you know the guy's dying to play. So, I'm just thinking that Andrew should play with a little more desire, that's all. Show that he wants it.

christopher blake,

Seriously, man, what is up with Oregon fans?

Trailblazer, Beavers, and Ducks fans are incredibly vitriolic and classess, especially when playing California teams.

I've been to Oregon several times, but only southern, eastern and northeastern Oregon. A beautiful state and, in my experience, the people were pleasant, friendly, and down-to-earth.

Why are they such classless animals when it comes to rooting for their teams? I've got no problem with energetic, protective fans, but Oregon fans completely cross the line. They're like Boston fans. Maybe worse.

Seriously, Christopher. If you have any insight into this, I'd really like to understand it better.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

Jon K

Actually I was thinking the K's need better lighting.

The lighting is making an other wise dapper AK look like one of those 'sad clowns' you see painted on Velvet. lol

Andrew effects the game by just being somewhere around the rim. He's not earning his bonus yet, but no complaints... while we're winning.

davem,
"So, I'm just thinking that Andrew should play with a little more desire, that's all. Show that he wants it."

That was an issue his first two years; last season he seemed to be past that, now it appears to be showing up again. Hopefully it is caused frustration, and not satisfaction.

"caused by frustration"

Good win for the Lakers last night. The games ahead on Sunday are feelers game in the West, where the team is heading in 2009. Definitely, we have the edge against the Blazers w/o Roy and Webster and Tueday's game is a good one against Hornets. They lost two at home so what do you expect from Byron's team? He puts them on notice that if they can't beat the Lakers there no chance for them to capture the West. Stepa, West, CP3 and Posey will try their best to steal the game.

Lakers are doing great with their performance last night eventhough they had a long lay off. I'd like to see Powell, Mihm and Vlad play more minutes. These bigs will help the team during the playoffs. How about Mbenga and Yue in the 2nd half of the season?

Celtics are desperate.

They are currently fishing for old players to help the team. They are waiting for Marbury, asking PJ Brown to come out of reitrement, talking to Rob Horry, if he could help them. The mean machine is old and still getting older by shooting for the geriatric group. Can they ask Larry Bird and Cedric Maxwell to come back and help?. LOL!

I was really looking forward to seeing Sasha go after Deron, but.....

Apparently PJ was worried so much that even when the lead was large, Fisher was still on Deron for 42 minutes.

Fishers defense was amazing on one of the elite guards of the NBA.

AB - He WAS moving a little Dinosaur slow like. Hopefully it was just a cold or something, or his minutes could become extinct like the Dinosaurs. I'm really not worried. The Beast will have his day yet.

Fatty,

"Actually I was thinking the K's need better lighting."

If by "better" you mean "any whatsoever," I'm gonna have to agree. haha

These videos remain the work of some fairly guerrilla-style production.

AK

Floyd,

It's not as much Bynum's offense (which does require tons of work) but his overall effort. He's too passive and too dependent on the teammates. Sure that's good to be trusting of teammates but he must be aggressive on his own. He does take advantage of opportunities but he doesn't create the situation well enough to open up opportunities for himself. Usually it's a Kobe penetration or a Pau pass. That $13 million is not worth it if he just continues to be too reliant on Kobe and Pau instead of giving effort. His teammates are more than willing to find him but without effort Bynum is not going to be the franchise player anytime soon.

The rebounding and defense is what was lacking the most from him. Those 2 are the most important when it comes to effort since offense wise it requires more skill as well as effort/energy. He snagged less than 2 rebounds, even D-Fish got more than him and he got as much as Sasha and Sasha averaged less minutes than Bynum did. Sure 3 blocks and those were good help defense but otherwise his energy was not there and he was a liability on defense. Otherwise Jackson would not have hesitated to leave him in there.

When Bynum gives effort he'll be fine. But he has to learn to be a 3rd option and has to be motivated enough to work instead of being too reliant on his teammates and better give better work ethic and energy to rebound and defend because if he does give more games like the Utah one he ain't worth the $13 million extension.

blake,

I have league pass and yes their announcers are very unprofessoinal, biased, and disrespectful to other fans. During one game last year, Mike Rice literally said, "Laker fans are not knowledgeable." I try to tell people that when opposing crowds chant "Beat L.A, Beat L.A.", they're not only saying beat the Lakers but beat Los Angeles.

Undefeated in '09! We are totally the best team in the league now!!!

Anyhoo, I hope we can keep it that way, and kick ass from here on 'til June.

Edwin

Now that I can sink my teeth in. Go deeper in the bench and rest starters and give reseves experience if called on in playoffs.

CHUCK23,

That Q for AK/BK is right on... although it has not yet been addressed... I don't want to sound as a Walton hater... 'cause I'm NOT!! But it is frustrating to watch these guys (Walton, Vladi, Mihm, Sasha and Powell) play disoriented and out of synch...I want to think they will improve their game w/ more PT and as the season progresses. They are talented, they are just not showcased enough?!?!?!?!?! But that's PJ's call.

I totally luv the KB,Pow,DFish,LO and 'The Cobra' lineup! That is Chemistry @ its BEST!!!

As far as AB is concerned... after pondering on his situation all night long and analyzing all the facts... I came to the most awesome revelation!!!! AB's got several secret weapons in the works and all the aces up his sleeve!!!!!!! The heavy artillery will not be unveiled until and when it matters MOST... @ the PLAYOFFS!!!!!!
His meekness and passiveness are just a facade!!!!! AB doesn't want the enemy to know his secret moves just yet, otherwise they'll be ready for him and we will have lost the SURPRISE ELEMENT!!!!!! KEY ingredient for winning a Championship!!!!!! So LakerNation, DO NOT DESPAIR... THE BEAST in AB is ALIVE and WELL. NBA needs to be on RED ALERT for when this happens...

FRIENDS and FOES BEWARE!!!

We have a sinuous road ahead and our enemies are lurking in the shadows but we'll be ready... WE ARE THE LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!

KEEP THE FAITH Y'ALL and stay healthy!!!!

GOOOOOOOLAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carlos:

I'm applauding you for a stance support of AB and alert on the secret weapons scheduled to be unleashed in the Playoff. The main problem I have, from my perspective, with AB is his lack of conditions. He's got tired so easy and that is the primary cause of his inactivity and lack of aggressiveness (Lethargic to be precise) while he's in the game. There is no excuse for lack of playing conditions considering AB is only 21 years old. Phil has been careful with his choice words not to rub too hard on AB on this issue. Unless AB starts to display his secret weapons (I don't know what they are..lol!), I think it's fair that Phil took the matter on his own hand and try to light the fire under AB's behind!! We need him to show his promising future now or trade him to the Nets for Martin & Carter.
