An anticlimactic but Presidential Lakers Practice

Presidential_seal Anti-climatic in part because player availability was brief because everyone needed to be on the plane about 30-45 minutes after practice ended.  And anticlimatic because two speculative items discussed have since been settled.

Andrew Bynum, as he predicted, didn't receive a suspension for Tuesday's flagrant foul on Gerald Wallace.  After just three seasons and change, he's a savvy enough vet to figure if the league didn't mention anything about a suspension when informing him that the foul was upped from "Flagrant-1" to 'Flagrant 2," he was probably in the clear.  Wise beyond his years, that Andrew Bynum.

For his part, Pau Gasol spent some time talking about how he'd feel were he selected the All-Star reserve he now is, an honor he hasn't attempted to pretend wouldn't mean the world to him.  "If I win, I'll be truthfully excited about it.  It's something that fills me with pride and honor.  It's nice to make it and be among the best.  And if I don't, I'll be disappointed.  I've tried to play well to try to make this team be one of the best and play at a high level.  It's nice to be recognized."

There was, however, an amusing moment involving Kobe Bryant and yours truly.  I asked Kobe if he'd seen the clip of Barack Obama declaring him "the best player in the world."  He hadn't, but had been told of this statement, which naturally made him feel pretty good.  "That's what's up," smiled Bryant.  "It's a great honor."  By extension, I asked, shouldn't that put to rest any "Who's the best: Kobe or Player X?" debates once and for all?  After all, once a President says you're the best, it's more or less a law, right? Kobe's reaction was the most I've seen him laugh during a media session in quite a while, so kudos to me.  And with that...

GOOD NIGHT EVERYBODY!!! THANK YOU FOR COMING!  THE 9:30 SHOW IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAN THE 8:00.  TRY THE VEAL.  AND DON'T FORGET TO TIP YOUR SERVER.  SHE'S WORKING VERY HARD.

Kobe Bryant is bar far the best basketball player in the world.

Kudos to the President to recognize who is the best.

AK,

As Mamba would say, THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT. Priceless and genius, Andy. Great timing on the delivery, too. What can you say? 80% of America approves of the job that Barack Obama has done since elected and trusts his judgment as we are faced with some of the most serious threats in the history of our nation, so if Barack says that Kobe is best, that’s good enough to me. Extreme home makeover needs to volunteer to tear out the old bowling alley and put in some hardwood for the pres at no charge. Great publicity and Barack can ball as he solves the nation’s and world’s problems. LOL.

That was brilliant ...even more impressive because he didnt seem to want to be there...one of the least comunicative interviews of seen from him in a while until that point,Nice one

but he what was wrong with ma post before that didnt go through?...I know I was trying to trash your argument but Im not exactly the only one haha

Kiwi,

Thanks for the nice words. And to the best of my knowledge, your post went through. It's showing that it was approved on my end.

AK

It'll be nice to take politics out of this blog... How about it Laker Tom?

What the NBA did regarding Bynum was consistent with what they have done in the past, and in that sense, I agree with not suspending him.

BUT... I do feel that there SHOULD be a suspension for any hard fouls where there is no play on the ball. There is absolutely no reason why a player should do that.

As for trading Odom, I don't know that there is anyone else out there that would be worth trading him for. Even if they could get Brandt or Baron Davis, do the Lakers have a need for any of these guys? Maybe Amare, but would he be happy coming off the bench?

"Drew got him with a hard foul. Got that. So? I got over Raja Bell clotheslining Kobe. Did Bell even get a foul on that? Did the NBA review that?"

p ang, yes Raja got a Flagrant 2 Foul and was immediately ejected back on Game 5 of the 2006 Suns-Lakers series and yes the NBA did review it and gave him a one game suspension.

Luckily Bynum was hit with only a flagrant 1 at the time and not the flagrant 2 that would have given him an automatic ejection. But hey no suspension=GREAT NEWS!

I'm liking this President more and more! And this in addition to him chewing out Wall Street for using our tax dollars for their bonus and forcing NCAA football to get rid of BCS and have a playoffs!!! We need to get rid of term limits so Obama can be president for life!

AK:

That was just plain cool.

If I were in your shoes, I would immediately execute a codicil to my will so that my gravestone would include the line: Delivered perfect line regarding county's most popular new President to world's greatest athlete... press this button. [Button would then trigger a 3D Save-Me-Obi-Wan-You-Are-Our-Only-Hope-style hologram of the above clip].

Man, that would be awesome.

AK,

"GOOD NIGHT EVERYBODY!!! THANK YOU FOR COMING! THE 9:30 SHOW IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAN THE 8:00. TRY THE VEAL. AND DON'T FORGET TO TIP YOUR SERVER. SHE'S WORKING VERY HARD."

That's what I'm talking about. Keep up the good work.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

It's a presidential fact that Kobe's the best player on this planet. This raises the question: how did Pierce and Allen do so well in the Finals against him?

Simple: a phobia of the very essence of Boston. See the bottom of this page.

AK! That was awesome! Frickin Jim Hill was trying to piggyback on your comments. I still like Alan Massengale more.

i agree with you, Alan was better than Jim is right now.

AK,

do you know what happened to Alan and where is he now?

Jim hill makes too many mistakes, he doesn't know how to read the screen in front of him AND i don't like the way he interviews people. he leads them to answer the question like he wants to. like leading the witness.

annoying.

Lakofan,

Not sure where Alan Messengale is these days. Sorry.

AK

See, THIS is the greatness that is Obama.

AK,

that's ok, thanks

I think it was FanHouse or Ball Don't Lie who stole your thunder, AK. They already said something along the lines of "Well, if the President said it..."

Sorry.

But hey! YOU got to say it to Kobe! Hurrah for being the LATimes official Laker Blogger.

Good news on Bynum, we got away with one there. I hope the coaches go over his intentional fouling however. He needs to sell it better or he will be suspended next time.

Big roadie coming up, lets take care of some bizness!!!!!

Any word on Ariza?

dave,

So true. You know everything is going to be OK when God is a Lakers fan and the president is a Kobe fan. LOL.

Tom

LAL_Fan,

No offense or political statement was intended. Just trying to tie the fact that polls show that most Americans regardless of party trust our new president so when he says Kobe is the best, then 80% of Americans should also trust that. End of the whose better debate.

I don’t think avoiding politics on the blog means we can’t mention the president who is a basketball fan as long as we don’t turn it into a political statement. After all, Obama IS a basketball junkie. And regardless of politics, I think it’s great that we have a president who needs his regular basketball fix just like we do. That’s all I was saying, LAL_Fan. OK? :)

Tom

Fabulously done, AK

Andrew Bynum, As U didn't predict?? For God's sake, this isn't figure sakting!! KBros need to toughen up. You two need a deep therapy session with Mbengna. Seriously, you could have hurt the team if anyone would have taken you seriously.

LAKERS TODAY LAKERS TOMORROW LAKERS FOREVER !

Good morning Mamba24 & the fabulous morning CRUE!!!

AK said AND DON'T FORGET TO TIP YOUR SERVER. SHE'S WORKING VERY HARD."

AK/BK - are you guys putting Mama K to work on the blog?? Give her a break!!!! Don't subject her to our brand of crazy!! She's probably got enough to worry about with you guys! LOL!

Seriously, though - kudos on the interview. Kobe looked like he wished y'all would get lost until that point. Well done! Make sure you work on the grave marker thingy...

I am also getting irritated with Jim Hill. He sounds too much like McCain..."my friends' this and "my friends" that. Urgh. Messengale did a much better job - even Billy Mac does a better job, although that's not saying much. I could handle Hill if I knew we didn't have to listen to Joel on the broadcast. Both of them back to back is too much at times. What happened to Paul Sunderland? Did Stu just not like him or something? I thought he did a good job...

Anyhoo - it's GAME DAY BABY! We need focus & fight tonight. I hope Pau is not slumping - he needs to pick it up. Socks also needs to keep the aggression going - can't let people think he might be holding back.

I can't wait - it will be nice to see how this team handles itself on the road. I hope they remember to bring their D...

GO LAKERS!!!

>>>As for trading Odom, I don't know that there is anyone
>>>else out there that would be worth trading him for.

How about Marcus Camby?

>>>marcus camby for lamar odom sounds GREAT except
>>>that the clippers didn't resign odom becuase they didn't
>>>like his attitude so i dont see that happening anytime soon

Actually, it was partly because of his recent failed drug tests.
Since he's grown up and given up the ganja, he's been a
role model player and teammate.

If the Clippers did the trade, it would be either on a chance of
re-signing Odom, or to get his expiring contract and an extra
draft pick.

But yeah, I agree that Lamar wouldn't be likely to re-sign
with the LA Second String Clippers, so they probably wouldn't
want to trade for him.

FROM PALM BEACH, FLORIDA

BONJOUR GUYS,

For this coming trip, I wish our team concentrates 100% on each game if not we will have 1 or 2 loss.

We are playing for the ring nothing less therefore all the players should play every game with heart and soul like their captain, Kobe.

CONSISTENCY, DEFENSE, PASSION=CHAMPIONSHIP

Our team has his destiny on hand, so they have to do everything to keep it.

I will move to LA next month.

LOVE TO ALL

SHEKOBE

Since it's getting near the trading deadline, I'm going to bring
back up a topic that will get me flamed by half the people here...

trading Odom.

Once again, I'll re-iterate that I don't think the Lakers would be
willing to re-sign Odom for 10 million per and I don't think that
Lamar would be willing to re-sign for MLE or less. If the Lakers
win a championship this season, then maybe they could find
a number in-between that both would agree to, or maybe not.

On one hand, if you trade Odom, it might diminish the team
just enough that they don't win the championship this season
BECAUSE of the trade.

On the other hand, if you don't trade Odom and you can't
find a salary both the Lakers and Lamar agree on, then they'd
have to let him go for nothing next summer.

And no, sign-and-trade this summer doesn't help. If you
sign-and-trade, you're taking back as much salary as you
send out, so if you're not going to spend it on Odom, then
why spend it on a player that you don't know exactly how
they'd fit with the team?

So what is there to gain by trading Odom? It's mostly about
the future -- you're gambling a reduction in talent this year
(assuming you like Odom) vs potential future talent.

The deal would have to include mostly expiring contracts
to make it financially sound. It doesn't make sense to
trade Lamar for Kirk Hinrich, for example. And it would
be nice if the expiring contract player is someone who
could actually contribute, like say Drew Gooden or Joe Smith.

But the real potential gain would be in what the Lakers get
that's not expiring.

How about an unprotected draft pick from a team that's
mid-first round or better? Look how well the Lakers have
done in the draft. If you gave them another top 10 pick,
they could probably find another Bynum-level player. And
they'd be paying that player rookie salary for 5 years, so
they could keep him AND Ariza AND Farmar and maybe
even Mihm & Powell & Sun Yue if he improves.

If not a draft pick, then how about a productive role player
who doesn't get paid the sort of bucks that Lamar commands?
That's why I brought up Camby. Next season, he'll only
make 7.6 million, which is an absolute bargain for someone
of his talent level.

If the Lakers do trade Lamar, the trick is that you have to
get back a front court player who isn't a complete bum. If
you could get a stud like Camby, it may actually improve
the Lakers front court, but even someone like Smith or Gooden
would probably be enough to fill rotation minutes for this
championship season (and of course, the Kraken could
fill in some minutes).

To be honest, I think the Lakers will stand pat. The only
reason I could see them doing a trade at this point is if
they could get a first round draft pick for Mihm, or something
on that level. When a team is clicking this well, you don't
just start swapping out players, even if it means a potentially
better future team.

TONIGHT!!!!!

The Clippers will beat the Crabaliers!

TONIGHT!!!

The Lakers will beat the T-Wolves!

Seriously AK, that was AWESOME.

Jon,

>>>>>I'm going to see the Clippers game tonight!

Not to burse your bubble, Jon, but that means you won’t be on your lucky bar stool rooting your Lakers on. This is what I don’t get about your dual fandom. A live Clippers game is more important than rooting your Lakers off to a great start on their 11-game roadie against a very improving Timberwolves team probably without Trevor Ariza? I can understand work, the birth of a child, a wedding or anniversary, or injury preventing a die-hard Lakers fan from watching the game but tickets to see the Clippers play? No way, Jose! This is worse than fantasy sports, Jon. It is akin to adultery. JK, but not entirely.

Slam Dunk contest baby! Slam Dunk! Pitsburgh by

Mihm will be the secret weapon in The Finals mark my words.

Long Time,
I don't think they will trade him, but if they do, the end result of it should address the PG position (via the draft would be acceptable).

I don't think that they need to get another front court player - Bynum will be able to play increased minutes (from both the stamina and the "not getting too many fouls" perspective) and Gasol has already shown that he can do that. So there will be as much beneifit from the three-man/two-position rotation that has been used this season. I think that Powell can handle the decreased backup role that would be required.

This is worse than fantasy sports, Jon. It is akin to adultery. JK, but not entirely.
Posted by: LakerTom | January 30, 2009 at 09:27 AM

Laker Tom will you please stop it with all these great quotes. Lol!

IF THE LAKERS WIN JUST HALF OF THEIR GAMES + 1
THEY WILL WIN 60! 2 ALL-STARS PAU & THE BEAST!!!!
WHAT A TEAM! WHAT A COACH! LEBRON MVP MY
AZZZ. KOBE! KOBE! KOBE! KOBE!

I don't think the Lakers would trade Odom for Camby. Although Camby woudl be a hugh defensive upgrade and may even increase the chances of a championship this year, it's not a very good investment for the future. If you give up Odom for a future pick, then you run the risk of not having enough this year to win it all. The Lakers do not have any huge weaknesses, other than maybe at guard, so Hinrich may make sense. Powell may be able to make up for losing Odom in the regular season, but I fear that Powell will disappear like Ronny did if the Lakers make it to the finals. So I think that unless someone offers another Gasol for Kwame steal, the Lakers stand pat.

Here's my official prediction for this road trip: (3-3)

Loss #1: I think the Lakers will drop the first game to Minnesota. Just because the Wolves are playing out of their minds at home right now. However, I will say that this is the part of my prediction I feel least confident about. The loss against Charlotte might have woken them up but I just don't see them taking Minnesota seriously enough to come out with the focus they need to.

Loss #2: Will come against either Memphis, New York or Toronto. Again, probably as a result of not being focused against a "lesser" opponent or just running into a bad match-up.

Loss #3: Will come against either Boston or Cleveland. The upside to that being that the Lakers will win against one of those teams in their own house and take the season sweep.

What do I hope for? 6-0. But 3-3 is what I think will happen. Going 2-2 into the games against Boston and Cleveland will have everyone crying armaggedon but winning one of those big games will just leave everyone confused.

""how did Pierce and Allen do so well in the Finals against him?" says The D"

Umm Kobe is one person... it took Pierce, Allen and let's not forget KG to take down one guy surrounded by a team of young-ins and foreigners, so this is how Obama can say he's the best cause he dragged the Lakers to the finals. This year he doesn't have to drag they're already there =)

Cal bear - see the link, then you'll get what "The D" meant.
