Creamed Cheese

On the heels of a loss to the Pacers better described as "frustrating" than "heartbreaking" (the latter Kobe_2 descriptor needs to be earned), the last thing the Lakers wanted to look like was back to back hacks.  And while their 114-102 win over the Sixers was hardly the textbook lockdown display Phil Jackson had hoped to watch, the Lakers' offense also ensured that Philly never truly threatened the outcome. A lead swole up to 18 entering the fourth quarter was protected, albeit with a ferocity slightly below that of a rabid pit bull.  Lotta points poured in by Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant (who celebrated his dazzling of Andre Iguodala and a now encouraging crowd with a cheesesteak).  Just slightly lower in the scoring department was Andrew Bynum, although his rebound contribution to the box score was definitely lacking.

Also lacking, according to PJ, is Drew's judgment when it comes to substitution patterns.   More specifically, it ain't none of the kid's bidness.

The Lakers, however, are racking wins like nobody's bidness, their total now sitting at an eye-popping 15-2.  The clip may not strike PJ as the stuff to lap his '96 Bulls (no offense intended), it's certainly good enough that ESPN is endorsing the Lakers as the west's unquestioned best.  The true #2?  Something of a cloudy question.

So ... what DO you have to say for yourself AK?

Phil Jackson is a horrible coach - I can't believe he stays consistent with his rotations! Why would he want the players to feel comfortable knowing when they are coming in and out of the game and establish a rhythm over the season? Madness!

Mamba24/utzworld,

Please read my invitation to you on the angry mob/CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS DON'T LOSE GAMES LIKE THE ONE LAST NIGHT!!!!!! thread.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

Wow.

Mobley might have to retire. That's too bad. That guy was all class as a Clipper.

If that is so, the trade was even more brilliant that it seemed. They gave up The Cancerous Tim Thomas and Mobley who may not be able to play soon and got Zach Randolph who has been a monster for the Clippers.

Last night's game was another heartbreaker. They got within one point in the fourth quarter and then fell apart. If they could just play a solid fourth quarter the Clippers would be 10-8. They just fall apart at the end... which is usually the sign of a team which is either poorly coached or lacking confidence... or both.

The Clippers aren't particularly deep, but their best eight players are rather good. If you look at their line-up, it's a playoff team. The fact that they are playing so badly forces a jaundiced eye in the direction of Mike Dunleavy.

He's done a great job as GM but he's obviously doing a lousy job as coach.

Go Clippers!

GO LAKERS!

Kobe was brilliant last night. Footwork, ball handling, shots made....he was by far the best player in the game. In fact, Philly's coverage had him as player of the game! Philly's announcers were showing him a whole lotta love, too. They talked more about the Lakers than they did the Sixers. Kinda nice, since I couldn't see Joel and Stu.

...Was a little sad to see EB's face. While being a Sixer must be infinitely better than being a Clipper, it'd be nice to see him win. Just not against the Lakers.

Wizards tomorrow! Nothing like gameday!!!!!!

Cue it, you know you want to:
"I LOVE LA!!!!!!"
"WE LOVE IT!!!!!!"
GO LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!

"That said, Magic admits having Davis in L.A. will force him to do something he never thought possible. “You know how much I love my Lakers,” Johnson says. “But for the first time, I will [also] root for the Clippers because of Baron.”"

I say it's time to follow Magic Johnson's (who I might add has a statue outside of Staples Center) lead.

As long as they're not playing the Lakers what does it hurt to root for the Clippers? A good Clippers team is good for Los Angeles and Baron Davis is a UCLA Bruin and a cool hometown dude.

Go Clippers!

GO LAKERS!

We've all been thinking about it and thinking about it for a while...

It's time.

MAGIC JOHNSON FOR LOS ANGELES CITY MAYOR!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

Portland's starting to get prime time in my nightmares as well. I prefer them to Rondo triple double nightmares 'cause even my subconscious knows they can't win it all.

Gotta put the TV on a timer. SportsCenter looping through my dreams isn't good for my waking state.

From the Daily News:

--The Lakers are valued at $584 million, up from $560million last year.

The Knicks, despite their on-court ineptitude and off-court turmoil, are worth a whopping $613 million, a 1percent increase over last year. The Chicago Bulls are ranked third at $504 million, the Detroit Pistons are fourth at $480 million and the Cleveland Cavaliers are fifth at $477 million.--

The Lakers are worth 24 mil more this year than last?

Coincidence? I think not!

And imagine what would happen to the #5 Calvs and #1 Knicks if Lebron goes to NY in 2010?

SCARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dead horse beat....O is fine. D needs work.

"Andrew Bynum wasn't happy about going to the bench midway through the fourth quarter of the Lakers' loss Tuesday to the Indiana Pacers.

Coach Phil Jackson had a not-too-subtle and perhaps all-too-predictable response before the Lakers faced the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday.

"That's none of his business," Jackson said. "He just goes out and plays. That's his job. ... He's a kid, he doesn't know any better.""

Phil, that's a load of bullcrap. That's your ego talking. That's not a good coach talking. That's an egotistical jerk talking. Phil, you know better.

Waking up this morning (yes, my morning thoughts are often Laker-related), I was reflecting upon how Andrew Bynum's Bio-Chrono structure is focused upon his ability to understand his environment. That is the pinacle upon which he is balanced.

He is an extremely mental player--three of his four levels being mentally orientated. The only level which is not mentally orientated is his mental level--which is emotionally orientated.

So, his entire worldview and ability to effectively respond as coordinated being to situations rests upon his emotional relationship with his intellectual/social world. That process is called understanding.

THUS! It is essential for Bynum to understand his role on the team and his environment to function effectively. MARK MY WORDS! It is NOT POSSIBLE for Andrew Bynum to give his 100% unless he understands the what, how, where, when, and why of a situation. Period. It's not possible. He becomes hesitant otherwise. It's just how he is. It can't be changed.

So this, "You do as your told, soldier! Charge up that hill!" approach to coaching Andrew Bynum will result in sour fruit at best. He needs to understand WHY Phil substitutes as he does and HOW Phil expects these substitutions to be benefit the team AT THAT MOMENT. As God is my witness, this is true.

It truly isn't a matter of Andrew challenging Phil's wisdom or authority. It's not that at all. It's just that Andrew needs to understand the logic and reason behind decisions (even if he doesn't agree with the decision, it doesn't matter) to fully commit as a human being. That's not just for basketball, it's the way he is in life in general.

Understanding is THE KEY to Andrew Bynum's success as a human being and I hope the Lakers coaching staff is aware of that fact. He needs to have things explained to him in detail. It's not a matter of him not trusting his coach. It's a matter of needing that intellectual detail to contextualize his actions effectively.

True that.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

"The Lakers are valued at $584 million, up from $560million last year."

How the hell is Oprah worth well over a BILLION dollars and the LAKERS are worth less than 600 million dollars? This is absolutely incomprehensible to me. Is there an entire planet buying Oprah jersies? I don't think so.

Nothing against Oprah, but there's no reason a single talk-show host should be worth more than the Greatest team in professional sports. Somebody needs to adjust those numbers.

Andrew Bynum = 21 years old, 4th year in the league, total number of games played: about 160

Phil Jackson = 63 years old, 40+ years in pro basketball, total number of games coached 1411.

But yeah, Bynum is a genius and Phil doesn't know what he's talking about.... NOT! Get a clue people, Bynum is a kid who knows nothing about substitutions or even enough about his own body to know when he should be playing and when he should be sitting.

Bynum needs to keep his MOUTH SHUT and PLAY, Drew's performance on the defensive end has been pathetic for a few games now, he needs to shape up and get with the program or he'll find himself coming off the bench!

Do our players really respect Phil? It seems they don't hesitate to question or criticize him. I can't imagine the Spurs players openly questioning or criticizing Pop.

I believe Stu accidentally mouthing the strongest criticism on PJ in last night game against 76ers. I am paraphrasing - the most important part of coaching is to make game-time adjustments, not before and not after. This is a direct contradiction of what PJ and his "yes" boys were saying. I am paraphrasing again - the coaching job is done when the game started. It is too late to coach during the game.

If the coaching job is done before the game, why bother for a coach to show up in the game? I am saying that because I wish, some days in the future, when a reporter heard some BS from PJ and his "yes" boys, he could challenge them to explain themselves.

Good Morning Charles....Good Morning Everyone...

Nice bounce back game---Kobe was definitly not going to let this one get away--he showed us all once again why he is who he is (initials are M and V and P)....

better free throwing tonight, but I 'd still like to see us get even better and stay consistent, as it were...

I thought the local Philly announcers were quite good and equitable in their reporting---very gracious in their views of our team and giving props where props were due---it was very refreshing indeed..

I hope the team and coaching staff watch films and see the weakness in our zone or so defense---very susceptible to base line / back door plays...we left some guys very open for that back door play and the dish off from penetration---hopefully (obviously) we are still a work in progress on the defensive end...

to play a combo zone / man takes a lot of concentration but if the players are smart enough and active it can be a highly effective defense---I would like to see a little more of some change ups from time to time, we can't get too predictable---go straight man to man, then zone, then combo zone etc.

AS ALWAYS, AS EVER, YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY (AND SEASON) TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!

GO LAKERS !!!

Paul Pierce on beating Indy last night: "We had a great incentive," Paul Pierce said. "They beat us last time and they beat the Lakers last night."

PJ's comments after last night's win: "I'm still not happy with our defense...We are what we are: a good offensive team.”

Kobe was so upset he didn't get a cheesesteak or visit the old neighborhood? Bynum was critical of how many points in the paint they gave up to Philly's guards?

Huh? Why would Pierce bring up Indy beating the Lakers? I thought the loss in Indy was just another loss. Why are the players and coach being so critical in the wake of notching a tough W on the road on the second half of a back-to-back? Why can't they just be satisfied w/ having one of the best starts in franchise history and currently being tied for the league's best record? Why are they harping so much on D?

Come on Laker_sth Do I have to tell you why.....IT'S HOLLYWOOD!!! LOL!

The most important part of coaching is preparing your team for the game. That is far more important than making adjustments during the game. Teams that are well-prepared are able to make adjustments on their own.

hey! I want to join that bandwagon. I'm all about the fact we lost the way we did!

lakers_sth,

That's what happens when you lose a game!

You always need to pick on something!

PJDoubter

I heard that statement last night by Stu and he is 100% correct. This is Phil's GREATEST FAULT!!

Phil's in-game adjustments are horrible along with his substitution patterns.........there is no rhyme or reason to them. The reason he is not questioned by the media is for 2 reasons.......1) Most guys in the media are just happy to be there. 2) They can't formulate the right questions to ask Phil to expose him because they don't understand the game themselves

During the 2004 Finals Phil's in-game adjustments were horrible during that series and he was exposed by Larry Brown

Last year Doc Rivers exposed Phil and it became evident that the Lakers had no defensive scheme during that series............it looked as if they had never been coached or they didn't have a game plan.

I am convinced that the Lakers can not win a championship with Phil Jackson at the helm............His ego convinces him that he can open today's locks with yesterdays keys....................

Out of curiosity, Charles, when did you officially become king of the blog? (j/k of course homey)

LET IT BE SAID LET IT BE WRITTEN LET IT BE DONE

ex,

Great post! You deprive us of much of your basketball wisdom and common sense by only posting one liners. I would like to see more long posts from you like this one, which was just excellent. Keep it up, ex.

>>>>>Too many of you are giving too much weight to game 6 of the Finals, and not
>>>>>paying enough attention to how close the Lakers were in their three previous >>>>>losses in that series.

You are absolutely correct. The Lakers were playing on borrowed money and lost their edge after winning the West so easily while the Celtics were struggling. Throw in the emotional boost from Pierce’s antics and a Celtics win was inevitable.

>>>>>Overall, Boston clearly played better than the Lakers, but only a little better
>>>>>than the Lakers in the first five games, and had a couple of possessions gone
>>>>>differently in a couple of games, the Lakers would have won the series.

So true. Had we not blown that big lead, the series would have been ours.

>>>>>Now, to that roster add Ariza and Bynum (with Mihm available in case a couple
>>>>>bigs get in foul trouble). Throw in a year's more experience for the young Farmar
>>>>>and Sasha, another year in the triangle for Vlad and Gasol.

It is becoming very clear that Ariza is really going to become our defensive stopper. And Andrew is slowly regaining his confidence and abilities from last year. He will be the physical force down low that we did not have last year. I also think Pau is playing much tougher this year. Overall, our team defense has been a complete turn around.

>>>>>The Celtics will need to improve a significant amount from their level of play in
>>>>>the Finals to beat this Lakers roster. Is it possible? Yes. They will benefit from
>>>>>another year together, and their younger players will improve with the increases
>>>>>experience. But Garnett and Allen are at the age when they will probably have
>>>>>a slight drop off with each year, and they have lost Posey. Is it likely that the
>>>>>Celtics improve a significant amount? I don't think so.

I may disagree here because I think Rondo has taken his game to another level. From what I have watched, Boston’s entire offense consists of Rondo penetrating and dishing or Pierce or KG going one-on-one. I think the Celtics may win 70 games this year. The Lakers trapping defense will be important factor in forcing Rondo to get rid of the ball. Of course, they will have to do a better job than they did with the Andres last night.

>>>>>Does this make the Lakers a guarantee? No - anything can happen in the playoffs,
>>>>>there can be injuries, etc. But IMO at this point they have the best chance to be
>>>>>the next champs.

To begin with, I think the Lakers will have to win more than 70 games to get home court advantage. If they have best record, they will win the Finals in 5 or 6 games. If the Celtics hold home court, then it will be a 7-game evenly matched series.

JMNSHO.

RODLMAO !!! Stop it PFunk, Stop it! hahahahaha!!!!

For all you Faker Fans

Rajon Rondo stats for last night against the Pacers
16 points 17 assists 13 rebounds
Fisher and Farmar's stats against the Pacers (combined)
14 points 6 assists 3 rebounds

At every position the Celtics are better than the Fakers with the exception of Kobe , and Ray Allen was the better player in the Finals last year.

Open your eyes Faker fans, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. the Fakers don't play defense, they don't have it in them. They have a coach whose ego doesn't allow him to change with the times.
a good example are the Trailblazers, notice the improvement as the season progresses, now notice how stagnant the Fakers look.

Boy I feel sorry (not) for you delusions of grandeur. We are a better team than last year and your savior Bynumb gets a whole 3 rebounds last night. Perkins et al will just bully Bynumb and the rest of you and then you can say you lost with class while the Celtics are enjoying another championship.

OOOOOWEEEE!!!!! THIS BLOG IS ROCKING TODAY. ROFLMFAO!!!
How you be Brother

Larrry(Mamba24)

Good coaches and teams make great in-game adjustments. Look no further than USC football as an example. Pete Carroll is the master of halftime adjustments, which usually leads to SC dominating the second half of games.

The Lakers should look at SC's defense as an inspiration. Perhaps they can watch SC demolish UCLA this saturday.

pfunk - You can add the 2006 playoff series against PHX which actually showed both sides - how he's one of the best at preparing a gameplan but one of the worst at making adjustments. They were never able to counter what PHX did to counter the "gameplan".

Unlike you though, I do believe PJ is the greatest coach in the game. I hope that he, or someone on his staff, can improve their ability to be agile and figure out adjustments when what they're doing isn't working.

Every boxer has that perfect game plan for their fight, till they get hit with that first punch.

Down goes Frazier, Down goes Frazier. Yes Sir the blog is really rocking now

lakers_sth,

you wrote: Huh? Why would Pierce bring up Indy beating the Lakers? I thought the loss in Indy was just another loss. My response: Hmmm ... In case you're not being
sarcastic:

Professional basketball is a competitive sport. It is filled
with the type A personalities who are the biggest trash
talkers on the planet! While non professionals adore
the high-scoring, flashy, "beautiful game" that the
showtime lakers personified ... professionals who have
won championships understand one thing:
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS! [ btw, the showtime
Lakers played good defense.]

To directly address: "Why are they harping on D?"
The Lakers organization understands that they have
a wonderful offensive team. They had one last year
as well. They got punk'd by the Celtics and b-slapped
into this season on INTERNATIONAL TV last year. The
Celtics organization has made it publicly known that they
are going to play physical defense and beat down as
many teams as humanly possible because they wish
to duplicate what Russell's team did. That means that
if the Lakers want to win a championship, they will play
the Celtics in the finals. That is the tapestry that you
should take my final comments.

My Final comments: The Celtics defense WILL slow down
the Lakers offense. GUARANTEED!!! If the Lakers can
not slow down KG, Pierce, Ray Allen & Rondo the
Barbarian they will be punk'd AGAIN ON INTERNATIONAL
TV!!!

F* Boston that’s right I said it

Quit rehashing the past and let it die
I know it’s hard but give it a try
We’re blowing this thing up bigger every day
Trade him, blame him, shut the F* up and play
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m just as guilty as you
But what you fixate on you give power to.
So fixate on the title and the victory line
F* Boston leave those punks behind
I would rather lose and lose with class
Than win like Boston and look like an @ss
The only way they won was by playing thug Basketball
And getting the benefit of every B.S. referee call
We’re the Freakin La Lakers we don’t play that way
That’s why we’re called the class of the NBA.
When Boston players are alone and by themselves
They know they couldn’t have won without the refs help
This time there will be a new ref calling the Finals Game
He’s an old friend of ours and Destiny is his name
When a things meant to happen, there’s nothing anyone can do
So this year the Dynasty starts, did you hear that Boston F* you
Every now and then you see the stars converge
And out of this twisted mass a thing of beauty will emerge
So enjoy the twists and turns of the season this year
And most of all get off your rumps and cheer
And when we win the title and are serenaded by the band…
We’ll all say F* Boston they were nothing but a one night stand

Mayor of Kobe Town,

"Bynum needs to keep his MOUTH SHUT and PLAY, Drew's performance on the defensive end has been pathetic for a few games now, he needs to shape up and get with the program or he'll find himself coming off the bench!"

You're misunderstanding what's happening.

Andrew Bynum isn't challenging Phil Jackson. He just wants to understand why Phil's doing what he's going to make the most out of Phil's strategy.

Andrew's not the one who's in the wrong here. It's Phil. If Phil is making decisions which don't immediately make sense to the team, it is Phil's duty to explain these decisions to get everyone on board. They don't need to necessarily agree with Phil's decisions; they just need to understand the logic behind his decisions. That's clearly not asking for too much.

Phil needs to get his ego in check. The answer "Because I said so!" is not an appropriate response between professional adults.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

Boston Owns the Fakers ,

You're making me come out of LA Times retirement for saying that crap.

Get that cannoli out of your ass and get a clue. Speaking of "delusions of grandeur" didn't it take Boston 17 years to win a championship? Didn't it take the Red Sox 86 years? Listen you schmuck, I have to live in this hell hole called Boston but I can tell you first hand that 99% of Celtics fans were still in diapers the last time they won a championship and there was one lonely survivor since the last time the Sox won the World Series. Yet all you delusional people call this city the best "town" in sports. What a joke!

Boston fans calling anyone fakers is a joke in and of itself. The biggest bandwagon is running right down Atlantic Ave. and right into the Gahhhden. What a loser!

What's up with these tragedies striking lefty big men these days? First it was Wayman Tisdale, now Rodney Rogers. Truly sad.
