Sasha_2 PROGRAMMING NOTE:  Join us for Purple, Gold, and Blue at 11 am.  Our guest will be Kevin Pelton of Basketball Prospectus.  Watch on the side of the page, or join the chat by clicking here and going to our show page.

As the old saying goes, "Dude, you gotta play four quarters of roundball," a phrase that will come back to haunt the Lakers' 118-117 loss to the Pacers.  And that would appear applicable, considering the Lakers tossed a fifteen point cushion to start the fourth quarter.  But really, that wasteful, unfocused attitude (33-45 from the line?!) was indicative of a game spent playing poorly for most of the duration, save a 17-0 run sparked by the bench mob in the third quarter.

It struck Andrew Bynum as curious that those same pine soldiers would get the heave ho after allowing the advantage to get somewhat chipped.  But then again, as he remained fully aware, Drew was among those allowing Indiana a major trump card on the glass, a trend that came back to bite the Lake Show in the final seconds when Troy Murphy wormed his way into the paint and tipped Marquis Daniels' miss home.  Hard to argue Phil Jackson's assessment that an unpleasant fate was wholly deserved.  But for what it's worth, the Pacers handed the Celts an even uglier losing box score this season, thus removing any bragging rights for Boston fans, like the one who wrote this "analysis."

If bright spots are still sought, consider Trevor Ariza's hand in creating the eventually blown third quarter space.  Just another reason Westchester's finest remains part of ESPN's seriously premature 6th Man Of the Year watch. And assuming his play is maintained, TA's likely to remain in the race.  Despite his obvious outplaying of small forward starter Vlad Radmanovic, Phil Jackson is content to have Vlad spread the floor for the first unit, then let Ariza gobble the Serbian Sharpshooter's PT.   Lamar Odom is equally entrenched in 6MOY yammer, but one wonders if a lack of scoring will come back to bite his trophy chances.

Troy-Butler

Please see my post on the Indiana Thread.

Peace

I love this team.

I'm looking for a rebound win tonight, some fire in the boys.

Go Lake Show!

If the Lakers continue to win 7 out of every 8 games, I'm completely fine with that.

Last night was lost because of poor Free Throw shooting, lackadaisical defense and poor substitutions by Phil in the 4th quarter.

So far the Lakers only lose when they play really really bad, and considering this is a relatively young team, I'm willing to accept that it's going to happen every once in a while.

JSNV!

Howdy padna'. You going to hang with us to see the Manny Pacquiao vs Oscar De la Hoya fight?

I hope the bench chairs have soft cushions considering the way our asses got spanked last night.

Plaxico Burress is more than an idiot. He's a real idiot. I'm going to bring a gun into a nightclub and tuck it into my sweatpants? Fool.

I can understand bringing a gun if you're walking alone down dangerous streets AND your stupid enough to have lots of money on you (knowing that you're going to be walking alone down dangerous streets), but bringing a gun into a nightclub is pure, stupid brazado.

I'm so tired of big stupid bravado. For those of us who are intelligent enough to see through it, these machismo idiots look like giant, insecure childish morons with a bad pokerface.

If stupidity and ego were a joint crime, this guy should get 20 years.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

The team was actually pretty sharp offensively Yesterday. It was the fact that they didn't play defense with any semblance of caring that did them in. They also rarely fought for loose balls or long rebounds - check out how many more shots the Pacers got.

If they play this way again, we are looking at a 0-3 road trip.

A toast to the Mayor for his words of wisdom. Thank you for creating a sane blogging atmosphere.

And, yes: Please, please, please make your free throws. And get back in transition. Thank you.

Go Lake Show!

Saying the Pierce is better than Kobe and therefore the "best player on the earth" is flawed reasoning. Maybe his accomplishments and play put him on par with Dwayne Wade. But not Tim Duncan or Tony Parker or even Manu Ginobli. Not Shaq. And definitely not Kobe. These are all current nba players whose accomplishments extend far beyond one great season or NBA Finals. I'm reminded of the words of a famous jazz poet named Amiri Baraka -

"Mother (expletive) who think he passed Coltrane better check out Peetie Wheatstraw, see if he caught up wit' him yet"

If the Lakers have a championship mentality they should blow out the Sixers tonight and make a statement that last night was a fluke.

Mayor,

The only thing that I think Jackson coulda done better was to put the starters in a little bit sooner to finish the 4th quarter. We saw a 16 point lead shrink down to 8 before Phil finally pulled the bench.

But on the other hand, Phil gambled in the Toronto game the same way and the bench pulled it out for us.

If we WOULD have won last night, No doubt Trevor Ariza would be MVP!

His bonehead missed assignment on the very last possession doesn't take away the fact that for at least two games in a row, Trevor has bailed us out with his hustle!

I was looking forward to posting a message to Eric M. explaining why I thought that Vladdy starting has played a major role in our success. Although this loss makes my opinion sound less credible, it does not change the situation.

Vladdy, Pau, Andy, Fish and 24, the "slow" group, as you say, wears teams down so that when Trevor, Lamar and the rest of that "fast" squad just picks them clean!

It's pure genius and it's been working to perfection luntil last night!

hog

Suns handled Pistons and Indiana...due in no small part to Shack, who matches up well with EC teams and their physical play.

What is it about the EC that gives the lakers fits?

Charles sez:

Butler, You know I spar with a few people here, but your post was spot on. The Lakers need to check themselves (PJ, The Team and the rest of the Coaching Staff) before they wreck it. Both losses came from the east and Indiana ain't jive, turkey.

Physically this team is not soft, mentally they need toughness. Especially our bigs should not be out rebounded by Troy Murphy and Rasho Nesterovich.
Kwame can't jump a lick and Sheed should be in a battle of the box out. Make the other bigs work.

Am I worried? No way. It's way too early in the season. But I do share the same concerns with the "Cry for D" posters.Yes. I feel we have high game to game expectations because this team IS capable of winning all of the games barring injuries and flight schedules.

Like Troy, I wait for the the Detroit, Boston, and Cleveland games. "

Well said, Charles. The lakers do not have a good record vs. the good EC teams going back to last season. Physical, tough play seems to disrupt the lakers. When the Suns played the lakers this season, Shack took control of the paint to the point where PJ sat bynum in favor of the speedier 2nd unit, which did well against the confused Suns.

But that lack of inside toughness is what should worry laker fans - it's a recurring theme.

GAME ON!

Matthew 11:12 - "The kingdom...suffereth violence, and the violent TAKE IT BY FORCE."

Mike T. is right.

Detroit and Boston are gonna pimp-slap us across the court in June if we keep playing like this.

The Eastern Conference is laughing at us. And rightfully so. Showtime 2.0 can dazzle its way out of the West without a blemish, spot or wrinkle, but in order to conqure the Beasts of the East, we've got to play 4 COMPLETE QUARTERS OF BASKETBALL.

For example: Let us revisit the Game Six Massacre in June 2008. Once Boston got a 15-20 point lead, they could have downshifted. They could have put in the 3rd stringers and ran out the clock on us. Nope.

Pierce kept shooting.
KG kept taunting.
Ray kept drilling 3's.

They weren't content with a 20 point lead. They did more than defend. They grinded. They pushed. They (almost) demoralized us.

THE EASTERN CONFERENCE IS NOT GOING TO EASE UP OR LET UP ON US! 15-20 POINT 4TH QUARTER LEADS MEAN NOTHING, AB17!

Phil was right to take out the 2nd unit. Why? Because a 15 point lead got reduced to 6. Why? Because, unlike Boston in June of 2008, we STOPPED defending. We STOPPED grinding. We STOPPED pushing. We are merely content to win. We have no intention to demoralize the opposition.

That's why the path to the ring runs through Boston. Or Detroit. Or Cleveland.

Until we develop a mindset that seeks to grind, punish and demoralize our on court opposition, we will always be 2nd fiddle to the Green Monsters. Until we commit to play 4 Quarters of Complete Basketball - where 15 point 4th Quarter leads are turned into 25-30 point 4th Quarter leads, there will be no more parades down Figueroa St.

THERE WILL BE NO CHAMPIONSHIP UNLESS WE COMMIT TO TAKING IT BY FORCE!

The refs won't give it to us. Detroit or Boston shole ain't! We have got to take it. No more early shot clock 3's or lobs that turn into blown dunks and turnovers. DISCIPLINE! FOCUS! HARASS EVERY DEFENDER! FIGHT FOR EVERY REBOUND! SINK EVERY FREE THROW!

Doesn't matter if we play the Celtics or the Oklahoma City Thunder. Every team must be crushed and demoralized...no exceptions!

CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE BORN BY TAKING THEM BY FORCE...ask Cap, Magic & Big Game James!

DEAR LORD, Let last night's loss be a lesson to the great citizens of Hollywood. To win a ring requires us to get our hands dirty. To win a ring requires us to forsake a Beverly Hills white-collar sense of entitlement mindset and to adapt a TRUE LA MINDSET - like the folks in South LA, Comption, Inglewood, East LA and elsewhere who GRIND 24-7-365 to TAKE what is rightfully theirs.

Deliver us from the superstar mindset. Use this loss to stamp in our hearts what it TRULY takes to be a CHAMPION! How can we call ourselves CHAMPIONS if we ease off the weaker teams and save our A game for the stronger ones. Develop in us a spirit that sees every opposing team as a threat - regardless of record. Remind Laker Nation that we don't play for 80-2 records, Pacific Division & Western Conference Championships. WE PLAY FOR RINGS! RING WEARERS play every game like it's JUNE! Develop in us a true CHAMPIONSHIP spirit that seeks to play 4 COMPLETE QUARTERS OF LOS ANGELES LAKERS BASKETBALL EVERY SINGLE GAME!

Lord, we know what we must do. Let those who have a spirit of a CHAMPION to ride on through tonight and beyond. Let those who don't, find another place to play by the trade deadline. We don't play for stats or the top of Hollinger's PER stats sheets. WE PLAY FOR RINGS! WE PLAY TO WIN...OR WE GO HOME!

AMEN.

What a dissapointment last night...

oh well. I would take this start anytime.

Let's get back to the stiffling D that we showed at the seasons start.

2-1 roady!

On to the Sixers:

Philly has been struggling in the early part of this season much in the same way that the Clippers have. They seem to have a lot of talent and should be better but haven't really gelled on the court yet.

We all know Brand and what he can do. Igoudala is a Danny Granger type and can rebound and dish. I don't think Dalembert has nearly lived up to the expectations set way back when he was playing for his big contract extension. Andre Miller is dangerous. He isn't quick but he's big. He may sound like a girl when he talks but he plays with power and loves posting up smaller guards and burning the defense with alley-oops. And Philly has two great young players in Thaddeus Young (another Ariza-like utility forward) and Lou Williams.

So, even though Philly may get inspired at the thought of playing the Purple n Gold, let's hope the Lakers are inspired by how much they plain sucked last night and take it out on the 76ers, keeping their perfect record on the second night of a backtoback intact. Remember that Philly had to go to overtime last night in Chicago and travel same as the Lakers did.

Hey, this is slightly off topic, but what does everyone think of L.A. Live--the building complex next to The Staples Center?

Personally. from what I've seen in photos, though I love the idea, it's come across as a cheesy, extra-corporate version of "Blade Runner" with a good dose of the worst of Downtown Las Vegas thrown in. Terrible, especially considering that we're entering into a economic depression. Terrible design. I'm sure people will nowgo into epileptic fits from walking towards Staples as they are overwhelmed by the rapidly strobbing collage of corporate logos and videos on either side of their path.

People from the West Coast should understand that East Coast architects have no real understanding of the soul of the West. They have have this distorted idealized/bigoted impression of what Los Angeles is and, as a result, have sub-consciously been working to destroy that which is good in California for almost a century (one only needs to look at the history of East Coast developers in California and such effrontery as General Motors and Goodyear working together to dismantle Los Angeles' red line--the most effecient mass transit system in the United States--to see what I mean.)

Staples and L.A. Live really should have been designed by somebody else.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

F'ing sux.

I have a headache.

Imagine my astonishment when I discovered I would not get the Christmas present I had my heart on.

Well, today's roll call was like some much needed aspirin, but I think it will take another 7+ winning streak to cure it.

So....

Here's a hang-over toast to the next 7.

Cheers!

We are still on a 72-win pace. So, not much to complain about, except that you want to reserve your losses for the good teams.

That's because on some nights, no matter what you do, one of the elite teams becomes unstoppable. This loss just reduces our margin for error.

Oh well. Tonight's opponent will feel our wrath. Time for us to get that taste out of our mouths.

We need to punch Philly in the mouth and run away with their lunch money.

I'm in there like Swim Wear!

Hog,

You are absolutely right. The triangle offense is so methodical, yet so efficient, that teams that run it well tend to be one of the league leaders in scoring while having less possessions per game (on average).

That is mind-numbing for the opponents. That means that the opposing team has to deal with spending more minutes per game playing defense then they are used to, only to get scored upon anyway.

I mean, they are getting run off screens, and cuts, and back-screens and lobs. They're stressed and worn out.

Then, BANG! PJ puts in a bunch of young kids who just want to run around the court, lobbing passes everywhere, dunking and driving and juking and jibing and trying to steal all the passes and block all the shots to boot.

Then, on top of all that; let's just say you survive the numbness of the starter's triangle, and you manage to slow down the bench's run-and-gun, unfortunately for you, the second unit also knows how to play the triangle, and their legs are younger than yours.

What is a team to do?

Lose, that's what.

PJ is a genius.

Especially since its LO that allows the Bench Mob to be both run-and-gun and slug-it-out at the same time.

BTW: I'll take 7 out of every 8 as well. That would get us home court for sure.

Keep the faith, but do something special for yourselves today - this will help ease the pain

(40) JAY JAY - We all know its coming down to us and Boston in the end
(41) THE OUTLAW - love this team.I'm looking for a rebound win tonight, some fire in the boys
(42)MAYOR OF KOBE TIOWN - If the Lakers win 7 of every 8 games, I'm completely fine with that.
(43) JSNV - I'll take 7 straight wins and 1 loss ALL SEASON LONG,
(44) JANAYA - Let's get back to the stiffling D that we showed at the seasons start.

laker_sth,
"Ron Artest "weighing in" on Plaxico Burress is like Lindsey Lohan commenting on Britney Spears. Gather all of them up and put them on Crazy Island together away from the rest of society."

You want them reproducing? It'd be worse than Jurassic Park!

Mamba24,

Add me to the "A Road Game The Season Is Over- BANDWAGON" ... sign it with ... came along so I can laugh at everyone else on the wagon

Otis,
Here's a belated response to ya question on can we beat boston now ... my opinion to that is we won't know the answer until June ... These are two very good teams and chances are they'll both make it back to the finals ... our squad's job is just to ensure they keep improving cuz the champs led by 3 future hall of famers are definately not going to rollover for us or any other team in the league ... with that in mind I like the current progression of our squad and even though we're less than 20 games into the season I've definately seen enough to say with confidence that a rematch will feature a much better laker squad ... however laker fans should keep in mind it'll be a better celtic squad as well ... just gotta wait till June dude to see who's really better ... and of course dec 25th & the other regular season game are double edged swords ... the winner gets bragging rights, but also gives the loser more motivation to get even better ... make no mistake, they want to beat us a 2nd time around just as bad as we want vengence cuz the media keeps calling us da best which is an insult to the defending champs

Mamba,

2 Shots to the Head is great prose, my friend. I love it.

BTW, did you fix that "Hate the Celtics" bandwagon irregularity?

--Fearless

Jon K - I see LA Live all the time and I don't think it's a sign of much besides a lot of money getting poured into trying to revitalize downtown LA and try to make it someplace people with money would actually want to live. It's part of this whole "luxury loft" movement that's been going on everywhere (not just LA) for the past couple of years. Fact of the matter is, the number of millionaires has grown a thousand fold over the past couple of decades. And the rich got richer for sure during the "W" era. So, it's not as if the economic crisis means the money has disappeared. It's just been redistributed and that's unfortunate for the working class.

But back to your original question - LA Live is not all that different than the Grove or Hollywood and Highland. Staples is already surrounded by existing luxury loft buildings - it's not as if the Ritz Carlton being built there is going to be alone. It may not be "true" to the spirit of LA but it wouldn't be happening if there wasn't a demand for it.

utzworld,

"THERE WILL BE NO CHAMPIONSHIP UNLESS WE COMMIT TO TAKING IT BY FORCE!"

Amen.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

Man, this Laker team is under a lot of pressure to beat the Celtics.

I can't wait for Christmas. I hope Andrew elbows Perkins in the head.

Good Morning Charles....Good Morning Everyone....

Jay Jay & Keifo---check out my post on the game thread after the game.....you may notice that one of pet peeves is .....wait for it...MISSED FRICKING FREE THROWS..

that and sloppy / weak passes---both of which can be controlled...

As much as last night's loss sucked, I am also in agreement with most realists on this blog , namely that these losses happen (and should be expected), hopefully we learn from them and it's a long season etc.

Do the trolls and nay sayers really have any CREDIBILITY on this blog (or anywhere else besides their own showers)?

Like I said after the last loss--I am glad that Laker losses gives some meaning to their obviously pathetic little lives...

Things I 'd like to see:

the Lakers hire a free throw coach

the lakers hire a passing coach for Rad (and maybe Lamar at times)--Rad's passes (a relative tearm indeed) drive me right up the wall...

Things I don't want to see:

Troy Murphy's fugly face..

" that's not such a silly walk at all is it?"

AS ALWAYS, AS EVER, YET ANOTHER GREAT DAY (AND SEASON TO BE A LAKER FAN !!!

GO LAKERS !!!

I think the ambulance chasers are funny. I haven't laughed so much in a while. We know they come out after every loss and we'll get to laugh at them another 10 or 15 times this year.

God help the Sixers tonight.

Mamba,
Please put me on Helo's "RunForTheHills" wagon

Jon K.
"I'm going to bring a gun into a nightclub and tuck it into my sweatpants? "

LMAO. It's a fun day.

Oh...and one more thing.

73-9 AND the trophy!

More thoughts....

The 72 win Bulls lost to the Vancouver Grizzlies !!!!!

GO LAKERS !!!

lakers_sth,

Don't get me wrong. I like the idea of L.A. Live and the revitalization of Downtown L.A. I, personally, deeply enjoy a true "urban" experience (like San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Boston, etc.) with something to see when I look upwards.

I think Los Angeles has been needing build vertically (with more mass transit) instead sprawling outwards for about twenty-five years.

However, while I like the idea of L.A. Live, I hate the design. There's nothing fun about being surrounded by strobbing videos of corporate logos and commercials. Also, the overly angular design with lots of sharp corners is TERRIBLE (TERRIBLE!) feng shui.

A person can never truly relax/feel comfortable/be at peace in an environment with lots sharp corners and angles 90 degrees or less. It's a fundamental neurological truth to feng shui. Sharp corners equal "danger" in our unconscious minds. While they may temporarily excite the nervous system--short-term--mid-to-long-term exposure to lots of sharp angles in any living, working, or visiting environment invariably leads to stress and burn-out.

Go feng shui!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

LET IT BE SAID, LET IT BE WRITTEN, LET IT BE DONE

A few thoughts on last nights game

* Pretty exciting game, kudos granger & raptors for fighting for so hard for 4 quaters
* Vlad Rad has no business starting. I'd like to see Ariza get his gig (we'd be start better defensively) or Sasha( we'd start better offensively). Preferably Ariza since defense is our mantra this season. And the argument that we need Vlad to space the floor is kinda weak since this team has proven over and over again that they can score at ease.
* We need to realise the rest of the nba is quite good as well and as such we can't just spread the wealth with minutes. That means Bynum had no business returning to the bench in the 4th quater and Rad had no business returning to the court either
* In da 4th quater after the starters came back in, I noticed a lot of guys passing up open shots in an attempt to pass the ball closer to the basket. My guess is this team guys where just nervous about the game being tight, I'd like to see Gasol/Bynum/Fish/Odom be more aggresive in these situations cuz the one thing teams are good at is ganging up on kobe since that's the way they've had to play us for so many years.
*Lastly I'll end on defense. The one thing I've noticed is our defense seems built on steals, blocks & rebounding. I'm happy with all that but would like to see less attempts at blocking shots when guys drive to the basket and more postioning (looking for the charge). It's an area we're just not good at and I constantly see guys get good position but move out of the way/create an angle for the opposing pg to get to the basket. Rambis needs to run a drill where everyone takes a charge from Bynum a couple of times, guys just need to stop being afraid of taking the hit cuz once opposing team realises we'll rotate in time and take the charge they'll drive less at us. The problem with going for blocks when a team is trying to run it down our throats is we'll end up with fouls called on us.

Pleased with our 14-2 record, the pacers had no business being in the game but hey it took a last second tip in on a broken play for them to come out with a win against us. I can live with that.

SIir Floyd I salute you.lol. That's the spirit.

lakers_sth,

What I dislike most about L.A. Live is that it is tacky. Tackiness works in Las Vegas, Reno, Atlantic City and Mexico. It doesn't work in a Great global city which Los Angeles is supposed to be.

(Of course pretencious designers from the East Coast with an East Coast bias would already by prejudiced into thinking that Los Angeles already is tacky. So, thus, they ensure that Los Angeles truly BECOMES tacky by presenting a tacky design for Los Angeles which our stupid local government enthusiastically accepts, morons that they are.)

Urgh.

Bring back the Raymond Chandler era of Los Angeles.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

GREAT POST TALIQ!

mamba24,

Thnx for updating the signature on the beat boston band waggon ... but umm that bandwaggon aint the place for giving our adversary their due respect (ala my comments about the media insulting them ) ... I'd rather you end it at "we can beat them every week." ...

Basically that band waggon should be nothing but venom for da celtics ... KG ain't an all star on this waggon, he's a chump that'll never be better than duncan ... Pierce is the dude that'd better not get stabbed at a night club in LA cuz he ain't no coming back from that ... Allen is yet another chump that's madd jealous of kobe and will get his before all is said and done ... Rivers is a dude that just got lucky and has no business coaching a high school team much less an nba squad ... on this wagon we bend the truth to feed our hatred ... on this wagon we're looking forward to a laker sweep of da celtics (pre-season, regular season, playoffs, pickup games, xbox, espn rankings etc etc etc)

So on this waggon the media ain't insulting the celtics enough ... when I start seeing articles about how ugly their mamas and wifes are ... then I'll concede that perharps the media is insulting them :)

F* the celtics ...

Another thought....

Chick always used to say that everyone (including pro basketball players) have a bad day at work sometimes...

I really wish Chick was here to see this current team---I think he would have thought it was one of the best Laker squads ever....

GO LAKERS !!!

The 72 win bulls also lost to crappy teams.

it happens

justanother...

Just post your e-mail address as a link on a post pslakerfan.

AK and BK aren't your personal secretaries!

...and if they are you'd better get them a good x-mas gift!

Jon K - I think the Raymond Chandler era (at least the affluent part) is alive and well down in Hancock Park. Unfortunately, that "tackiness" is what you get with new money and the mixed-use loft-living I was talking about. They're being built all around the city, Hollywood and LaBrea, Vine, next to the DGA, Santa Monica, etc. If you want to live like old-LA you can still move into places like the Ravenwood, El Royale and Gaylord. For those that like it, it's not as if those building are getting torn down.

Be encouraged that not all of the money getting poured in downtown is in tacky developments. There was a great recent article in LA Mag that talked about all the great new restaurants and infrastructure that's popping up in an effort to make downtown an actual place people want to live.
