Lakers 105, Grizzlies 96: Better pitch, tune still under construction
You wouldn't think a team leading the pack in its conference entering a game against one of the NBA's weak sisters would need a morale boost, but that's exactly where the Lakers found themselves Monday night as the ball was tipped in Memphis. Consecutive losses in Miami and Orlando had nearly doubled their season total, early season defensive numbers were sliding like the Dow, the Bucket Boys precision of the offense had gone the way of Pushing Daisies.
Sounds like a great time for a team meeting. The Lakers players and coaches cleared the air in the afternoon before the game, again committing to defense and with Kobe Bryant encouraging teammates to move the ball and take the offense that's available to them. LA's 105-96 win produced at least some of those moments. The Lakers, after allowing the Grizzlies too many of the easy buckets that had plagued them over the last month, clamped down hard in the fourth quarter, holding Memphis to 16 points overall and only five in the final four minutes. Memphis turned the ball over six times in the final frame.
As for the offense, the box shows a team high 36 for 24- including a huge triple with 34.8 seconds left to give LA the lead for good. On that play, at least, the ball found Bryant, but as far as finding more balance the Lakers aren't quite there. But first things first- they got the win and avoided a three-game losing streak. The goal now is to carry any momentum into New Orleans for a date with CP3 and the very well rested Hornets.
They'll play that game, and likely those coming over the next few weeks, without Jordan Farmar. Surgery has been recommended for the backup PG after he suffered a tear in the lateral meniscus of his left knee Friday in Miami. No course of action has yet been set, but Farmar is likely to meet the knife sooner rather than later, the length of his absence determined once docs open him up and assess the damage. Think weeks, though. Likely more than one hand's worth, too.
That should leave him plenty of time to watch Kobe on Deal or No Deal, so there's your silver lining.
While we're used to it in LA by now, the continuing positive evolution of Kobe's public image continues to be a story in other cities around the NBA.
As always, great work from Hornets24/7 previewing tonight's game in New Orleans. Having won 11 of their last 13, New Orleans is playing very solid ball, and the Lakers will need to crank up the execution on both ends if they're to gain a split on the roadie.

- Condolences to ex-Laker Brian Cook, whose father recently passed away.
- Never let it be said that Mark Cuban doesn't have a sense of humor. Time will tell if his marquee dude, Dirk Nowitzki, was merely punch-lining when he brought up taking a pay cut down the road to bring in a better supporting cast.
- Eddy Curry could be back in a couple of weeks and says Coach D has him in the blueprint. In the category of Things that truly need to be seen before believed...
- Tay Prince isn't thrilled with his teammates' tech snagging ways.
- Here's something you don't see every day. An entrenched starter requesting to come off the pine.
- Chauncey Billups wants to one day GM the team cutting his current check.
- Carlos Boozers remains day-to-day, and the days feel at least 72 hours long.
- If The King was talking serious, tossing chalk up in the air can be trademarked.
Now comes a real test. Miami is a good team, Orlando is a pretty good team, but the Hornets are a better than good team. Wonder if they Lakers will play up to their competition? Would be nice to see...
LO looked totally discombobulated for lots of his PT on the floor. He's missing shots badly and making poor choices. I wonder what's going on with him? He's completely disappeared. Kobe was Kobe. Fish is playing tons of minutes and I don't like that. Hate to see him get injured. We need a PG!

Congratulations on toppling the Griz, lakers.
The Gay-OJ juggernaut presents one of the mightier duos in the NBA, and many a team has gone to Graceland only to emerge bloodied and savaged.
On the serious side, is it just me, or will the Celtics be gunning for some kind of record win on Xmas? I tell ya, it was such a downer to see my team lose last xmas. Almost better not to watch at all if that happens!

It would be truly great to get Gerald Wallace on the team. We don't need a Swiss Army Knife as much as we need a consistent defender, rebounder, scorer (at times) that defends and keeps his head in the game.
Let's change the culture of the team and get back to our winning ways.

Good morning,
Something is wrong with this team that seems to need meeting after meeting to fix the obvious. Why do the Lakers need to constantly keep recommitting to Defense, when that should be obvious? Why does Kobe have to tell his team mates to stop standing around and stop forcing the ball to him?
The core of this team has been around a long time now. The coaching staff even longer. Are the players not teachable or are the coaches not capable of teaching?
Game after game, the Lakers have let the opposing team dictate the tempo and style of the game. Why are they incapable of commanding the game with their own style of play? I understand that the Triangle is reactive in nature, but it still has its own principle and system.
Communication on Defense is still lacking this far into the season, and the floor spacing on Offense finds players out of position and slow to react.
Bynum the Beast has disappeared into a haze of confusion. If it weren't for Lamar, AB17 would be the weakest link. LO seems unable to execute his role as 6th man with any degree of consistency. Kobe's defense has all but disappeared, probably because the team has become overly dependent on him for offense.
The coaching staff seems to have lost this team. With Phil Jackson having six rings, this is unexplicable.
Tonight will be a test. The Hornets are for real. Fans, players and coaches will find out how real the Lakers are as they play in the shadow of the Christmas Day showdown with the Celtics. Stay tuned. Go Lakers!

Last night's game was crazy - oscillating between "what the heck are we doing" to "take that you bunch of losers"!! Obviously we need to shore up the defense - I'm hoping Booster Boy et al have some kind of plan in the works for picking up a player. I would really hate to see a trade go down at this point.....The 4th quarter was great. LO may have gotten some of his mojo back after picking up that T. Seriously - he's getting to be like Kobe in the lack of respect the zebras give him. There were at least 2 or 3 plays where he was hacked, pushed & otherwise fouled with no call. I HATE NBA ref'ing. Ugh - don't get me started.... The D in the 4th was great - OH IF ONLY we could do that for an entire game!!!!
That said, this team is still a work in progress but there were a lot of positives to build on. Bring on the Hornets! Let's see what we can do - BUCKLE UP & GET 'ER DONE!

We're lucky we played the Grizz last night. If we would have played any better of a team like say the Heat or the Magic (I know Magic are actually good) we would have lost again. At the end of the day a W is a W though, I'll take it.
I few things I noticed last night:
1. Kobe had a lot of fire. I think it was in the third, he got really in to it and started getting that look and really getting in to the faces of the other Lakers to fire them up. Kobe needs to do that every once in a while. This team has the talent and a purpose, it just needs to light the fire.
2. While Odom didn't shoot so hot at least he got a T and showed some emotion. I would rather have a game like last night then one of those 1-3 nights. I actually believe he was getting fouled too. Let pray he shows up tonight and again against the Cs.
3. Bynum still isn't all there but he at least showed up last night. Remember, Bynum is our key to the championship, we NEED Bynum to play at a high defensive level with some steady offense. Tyson Chandler will be a good test for Drew tonight. Hopefully they can both play more then Drew and Howard did Sat night.
4. The Luke honeymoon seems to be over. Haven't noticed Luke doing anything good this road trip. While he hasn't been bad by any means, he isn't as effective as he was when we first put him back in the starting lineup. I wouldn't mind seeing Vlad Rad get the start tonight.
5. I always see Kobe and Pau congregate during timeouts and free throws. I wish all the Lakers would do that with each other instead of only those two. Sometimes it seems like we lack communication, huddling college style every once and a while might help.
Anyways, lets end this road trip 2-2. If we win tonight I won't call this road trip awful, just bad.

Last game of a road trip is always the toughest, and the Whorenets have been playing well lately. But the lakers seem to match up well with them, maybe even better than vs. the Griz.
I will be brave and watch the Suns take on the poop-kicker-tools on Xmas, but it's a risk. Losing on Xmas is the WORST!

K-Bros - Just want to thank and commend you for the blog. You guys and Ding are the only area sports writers that I consider 'must read,' when it comes to the Lakers.
A few thoughts from the game .
1. I think the Luke experiment has run its course and VRad should be back in the starting line up. I think there are still important minutes for Luke with the second group, but VRad is the better starter. So I am not down on Luke at all - he just needs a different role.
2. I love that Kobe is telling the other guys, esp. Pau, to shoot when open. We are so much more dangerous when everyone is contributing. Kobe is feeding other guys in critical situations because he knows they have to step up if we are going to win a ring. If we lose a couple because of it - so be it. We need Sasha and LO battle tested and ready.
3. We can't think of Andrew as a primary part of our O or D. He is still such a young and unpolished player. Rather than getting down on him, let's celebrate what he does bring. Honestly, he is the proverbial icing on the cake. He is going to make mistakes and he is learning. He is a huge upgrade and has a very high ceiling.
4. Pau has to step up and join Kobe and Fish as a leader for this team. He has been great all year, but he needs to step up and be a force in crunch time. That was a monster play he made to get LO's airball and out to Kobe. He is never going to be the enforcer type, but if he is assertive at crunch time, that will open things up for everybody else.

Last year as the trading dead-line neared... I mused that Lamar and Luke were playing horribly because they didn't want to be traded.
They played like crap so that other teams would be less interested and/or would offer less in return for a trade.

Seems like most of he Lakers fans are rooting for Odom and Bynum to show up, but really, what if they show up tonite, and even Xmas day, will they show up the game after that and the game after that? What I'm trying to say is, where is the consistency in these guys? These are "supposedly" Finals contenders and bringing back the O'Brien trophy in June, and yet look at them, their play is nothing but mediocre to say the least. There were no major injuries and everyone has been with each other since the beginning of the season. I say there's no excuse for their play for the last dozen games.
Frankly, I'm disgusted with their manner and attitude on the court, all talk and no action (Odom), and speaking of whom, probably one of the most overrated NBA players in recent memory. Just my 0.02!

Hey y'all! Been crazy busy at work/home the last few days and haven't been able to recap/post (very unChaplainlike!) comments about the last few games. I will say this: Jon K. and I saw the handwriting on the wall a few weeks ago and only a few of y'all listened to us. Y'all ready to listen now? :o)
I'm not labeling Christmas Day as Armageddon. Rather, it will be the ultimate litmus test for the Lakers to see - face to face - what it's like staring into the eyes & hearts of a champion. That game will be 1000% more MENTAL than PHYSICAL. They can either take Boston's bait and get sucked into their trap and lose focus. Or they can choose to remain focused for ALL 48 MINUTES.
The road they choose will determine whether we win or lose. Period.
DEAR LORD, We know what our Lakers must do. They themselves know what they must do. You have granted them the freedom to do it. Let them walk in that freedom. Boston won't give them permission. Comparing the two, Pargo has more advantages being younger and his trend on ppg his still rising while Lue is on a downward flow, no longer the Luuuuuue that we used to know but much better than our other reserved PG's. Besides the latter may need a Laker trade while the former can be acquired if he voids his current contract w/ DM.

I'll take an Xmas win. But I wouldn't mind if we lost, as long as we get to the finals and win there.
Burn yourselves out Boston. Then fall prey to the ever stronger east contenders when you get to the playoffs. We know the best way to beat boston is to have them beat themselves. They've done it for the past 22 years before McHale decided to save that franchise last year.

I'm wondering if Jerry West was right. He said that a front line of Bynum and Gasol would not work. Initially, it worked well, until teams figured out how to play the Lakers by crowding the middle. It may be that the Triangle Offense isn't meant to be run by two 7-footers, especially two that can't shoot the 3. I think Phil needs to experiment by letting his players be more creative to allow the Lakers players to use their athleticism.
As for Gerald Wallace or Caron Butler, although either would be an upgrade, I don't think it's going to be the difference between winning a Championship or not. They are somewhat redundant with what the Lakers currently have.
It's possible that Bynum will not be the player that I imagined him to be. He's still young, but he's definitely not as explosive as last year. It could be that the defense is now focusing on him, but he dunks a lot less, and he tries to do too much on offense. Instead of asking him to go 1-1, he should pass out and try to re-post to get into better position, or play some pick-and-roll with him to give him some mismatches or better looks. I almost think that it may be better for the Lakers to trade him rather than Odom, although for Bynum, you'd have to ask for someone very special.
To RLC, you're dreaming if you think that LBJ is going to the Celtics. By that time, Pierce and Garnett will also be over-the-hill and he's not going to take a huge pay cut to join an aging dinosaur of a team like the Celtics. Enjoy your 1-2 years because it's the last time for the next 20-30 years. It's going to feel soooo good when the Hawks or Cavs knock the Celtics out of the playoffs after the Celtics go 74-8. Just like seeing the cheating Pats lose in the SB.

Funny enough, the idea that the team had yet another meeting bothers me more than it encourages me. I've participated in enough team activities to know that doing that type of stuff is a hallmark of real troubles. It's just a reminder how these guys really are a bunch of kids.
Recognizing that there's a problem is good. Wanting to fix that problem is great. But that's all they've done so far. There are steps beyond that. They need to get out of the emotional mindset and focus on the Xs and Os of how to address the problem. And they can't be left to try and fix the problem individually (which is something this coaching staff does). They need to be lead by the coaches primarily and kept on track by the vets.
Don't say they need to shore up the defense - actually figure out how that's going to happen. The problem with giving an increased effort as an emotional response is that it's way too dependent on momentum and can turn just as negative as it was positive with one bad play. What these guys need is effort borne out of belief that what they're doing works. That if they just keep doing what they're told, they'll prevail. That's when you get an unshakeable consistency that ultimately wears down your opponents.

I may not be the mastermiind PJ is but why can't Sasha get a few more minutes? All I know is Phil can not complain about his effort on Defense and from what I remember he could shoot. This guy's minutes almost seems like he is in PJ's Dog House.

Go ahead talk about Bynum but Oden is going thru the same thing. Oden last night fouled out in 22 minutes and had 3 rebounds. Why can't PJ let Bynum play till he gets 6 fouls? Bynum only plays 21 minutes, get 4 fouls and we don't see the guy again. No wonder the kid is pissed! LO the brainless is getting his minutes during cruch time and I think AB really needs to know what it is like to grind out a win at winning time. HURRY UP AND TRADE THE BRAINLESS WONDER!

Go ahead Lakers and surprise me but I havn't seen a welled played game in a month or so. I actually was laughing yesterday they looked so bad on several possessions, I kept thinking of the Key Stone Cops.
Ok I will give them 1 quarter on the trip last night well they played with some fire but that is it.
If it takes a loss to NO and Celtics to make the Lakers make a blockbuster trade then so be it...
If they come home 1-3 on the trip and get embarrassed by the Celtics on Christmas Day I just don't see how they don't make a major trade.
I will think like Butler and say a loss to NO and Celtics is actually a win and good for the team. This will assure a TRADE and most likely involve the Brainless Wonder.

The "D" in the second half was much more effective...desire...heart...they showed it in the second half...let's hope it continues tonight, on Christmas...and through the rest of the season...
As I said in a previous post, my heart goes out to Farmar...it was a knee injury that forced my retirement from the Sheriff's Department...I've had sixteen surgeries on that knee...my artificial knee has worn out...need a new one...and, once one of your shocks goes, especially at an early age, the rest of the car pays for it because it over-compensates...

Wait a minute, last time I checked the team is 22-5, although in need of stepping up their game but not a horrible team. For Malone, the East is good this year (unlike years past where the teams stunk it up) but you cant name me ten teams in the east (outside of the Celtics, Cavs, Orlando) that are better than the Lakers, to make them have a 5-22 record.

I say we go after Chris Bosh. He seems unhappy in Toronto. To get him, we're going to have to give up some major talent, like Bynum AND Ariza. I say we do this, then trade Odom for Gerald Wallace. If we can get away with just Bynum and Farmar, then we should trade Odom for Kirk Hinrich.

if we had made our free throws-- (9, count 'em, 9) misses, this game would have never been in doubt....

I had a lost post from the Orlando game that was sent to nowhereville apparently that was no doubt brilliant---but not so brilliant that I can remmeber any of it other than these vastly important points:
(more appropriate for the previous two games): I can't stand when free throws at the end of the game are quantified as "crucial"--- they are no less "crucial" than the ones missed in the first minute of the game, or throughout the game...
why can't our team learn the value of making free throws--the easiest, most consistent aspect of the game of basketball...
Miamii's coach looks like a cross between Eric Estrada and that guy that plays Fez on That 70's Show...
I thought Stan Van Gundy looked like a gangster in the Godfather, but now realize that other bloggers (and apparently Shaq's) observation is much more astute--that he is porn star Ron Jeremy's "fill in" double--he is one of the lucky people that has two careers and draws two checks---NBA coach and the plumber / pool boy / pizza delivery man etc.
the Grizzlies coach looks like a biology teacher I had once--wish I was more creative on that one, but if you would have seen Mr. Pillsbury, you would have to agree---sorry..

I agree that the Lakers are not 5-22 and that the Lakers are probably the 3-5th best team in the league, but that's only acceptable if you're satisfied with losing in the Finals again. For me, and I think most other fans, anything short of winning it all is meaningless. In most other years when there isn't one team that is so far better than the other teams(you can argue that the Cavs are up there as well), it may also be OK to be 3rd best, but this year, if the Lakers don't either up their play or make some huge changes, there's going to be huge disappointment come June.
Also, for those that argue that they're young and have a few years to develop, you have to remember that Kobe is now 30 and his window of opportunity will slowly close. I think they have 2-3 years left to do something major in terms of winning, barring the Lakers getting Wade or LBJ which likely won't happen. The Lakers without Kobe, even with a line up of Farmar, Sasha, Ariza, Bynum, and Gasol, may not even make the playoffs, especially the way Bynum is playing right now.

I felt PJ should have benched LO than benching VladRad or that useless beast who moves like an Elephant. If there is such thing as buyers remorse, there should be owners remorse and redeeem the contract. For being lazy and lethargic, there should be breach of contract case filed against by the Family of Bynum as damages to the Laker fans braging rights for season tickets paid.
Lastly, whoever called him a beast owes this blog an apology. My Chihuahua is more vicious than Bynum. Whoa!!!

Here is a list of the defensive principles we discussed in training camp: Play on your guy's side and give him the whole driving lane. Trap at every opportunity no matter if the guy is Mark Madsen. DON'T block out. DON'T try to hard to rebound.
