Everyone on the bus!!!
In the NBA world, a roadie is often considered a fresh and new chance to see, as the saying goes, "what a team is made of." In particular, treks that require Mapquesting entirely within the Eastern Conference can garner such a label. Some, however, might see the Lakers' three-game swing away from Staples- which begins tonight against the Pacers (4:00 pm PT)- as more vakay than stepping stone, what with the combined 15-32 record for the hosting trio. But even against three teams the Lakers would be favored to conquer, specific challenges do in fact exist. For example, the Lakers are looking to bury an opponent from the opening tip more often, creating a deficit for the second unit to help maintain. Such goals are typically considered lofty in enemy territory, where most benches tend to struggle. It would help mightily if Trevor Ariza can maintain what's been a steady upward trajectory since joining the Lakers.
OTHER NOTES
- A look at NBA trends ranging from the Pistons' defensive struggles to the Lakers' lockdown improvement. In the case of the former, a Chauncey-free existence doesn't appear to be favorable.
- We hear this move worked out pretty well for Kareem.
- Joe Crawford would rather play for the Lakers, but is thriving with the D-Fenders.
- J.J. Redick simultaneously gets and loses his shot in Orlando's rotation.
- Even PETA wouldn't protest Jason Terry's latest donation.
- The Knicks-Starbury buyout talks end after 15 frustrated minutes. But at least Steph will have plenty of free time to contemplate his next move.
- After helping put the WNBA on the map ("map adjacent, if nothing else), the Houston Comets are folding.
- The Bull's donut quandary.

It's time for Socks (aka) the Beast to show Larry Bird how wrong he was.
In fact, Lamar ought to have a chip on his shoulder too.
I'll take any win tonight, as the Pacers are tougher than their record indicates... but what I really want is for the Lakers to CRUSH them, and by crush I mean hold them to 20 points or less in 3 out of 4 quarters.
And while I'm pronouncing my wish list, here's what I want for Christmas:
Tim wants a 28-1 Lakers record on Christmas day.
Santa Jackson shaved his white beard, but maybe he'll be in the giving mood. Looks like he has a lot of talented Elfs this year.

DREW MAKING CASE FOR NBA ALL-DEFENSIVE TEAM…
The remarkable stat about Sunday night’s win over the Raptors was that Andrew Bynum and the Lakers were the ONLY team this season to hold Chris Bosh to less than 20 points. Not only did Drew shut down Bosh from scoring but he also held him to just 6 rebounds and forced him into 4 turnovers.
At this point in the season, only Dwight Howard among NBA starting centers has better defensive stats than Andrew Bynum, averaging 13.9 boards, 3.9 blocks, and 0.8 steals per game in 37 minutes. Drew’s averages so far this season are 9.1 boards, 2.2 blocks, and 0.7 steals per game in 29 minutes.
Since Howard has averaged 37 minutes per game versus Drew’s 29 minutes per game, viewing their defensive productivity per 48 minutes gives a more balanced comparison. Howard’s figures per 48 minutes are 18.0 boards, 5.05 blocks, and 1.0 steals while Drew’s figures per 48 minutes are 15.1 boards, 3.6 blocks, and 1.2 steals.
Howard and Bynum are the ONLY two players in the league averaging over 9 boards and 2 blocks per game. Based on these numbers, Drew should be the second team All-Defensive center for the year. He is already the top defensive center in the West and should be a shoe-in as Yao Ming’s backup at center on the West All-Star team.
While Howard may have better stats at this point of time, I believe that Drew at this point plays better man-to-man defense than Howard. Howard gets his boards and blocks the same way that he gets his points – with his great athleticism. In my opinion, even though he does not have the same level of athleticism as Howard, Drew has better basketball smarts, footwork, and moves at both ends and will become the better center.
The first matchup between the Lakers and the Magic happens on December 20th in Orlando. It will be interesting to see how these best two defensive centers match up in their first head-to-head meeting this year. I predict that Drew will battle Howard to a standstill and the Lakers will prevail in the critical pre-Boston holiday matchup.
Of course, all of the above is solely the opinion of a professed Andrew Bynum fan.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING LAKER NATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IT'S LAKERS GAME DAY BABY YA!!!
Tonight we shall pay homage to a time honored tradition here in Laker land. The incontrovertible right of this team for years to come, The Blowout, or known by its' technical term, Ohsh*t-heretheycomeagainaphobia, is a fan favorite in LA-LA land. An odd side affect is seeing a team blow you out before it even happens. This is achieved in one of two ways. First: By watching the opposing teams highlights. If you were to continually watch the Lakers highlights, you would begin to think they are a team of destiny and they look tough to beat. As you watch more and more, the highlights instill a sense of fear and aw. The closer you get to game day the more the symptoms compound. This can lead to stomach problems and general bad play. Second: Admiration. If you have heard of the Lakers superior play, you would be compelled to watch them play. As this happens you gain respect for the Lakers and as a side effect of that respect, you play terrible defense because you wish to see the Laker greatness first hand. This can lead to severe idol worship and in extreme cases, increased pine time.
Today I pack the virual bowl for the pacers coach...I also send him some virtual aspirin, he gonna need it...

I don't think MT will agree with that Sports Illustrated article....
Afterall, it says that Detroit has gone from the 3rd best defense to the 25th. This is IMPOSSIBLE because Kwame, in that same time, has gotten more minutes.
Detroit's defense is actually BETTER than before.... everyone just doesn't realize it yet.

What a great idea, Larry. In addition to existing Lakers season ticket holders contributing some of their individual game tickets to fellow bloggers ala pslakerfan, there must also be many millionaire Lakers bloggers out there who could afford to purchase Lakers season tickets and donate them to the blog. That way they could get a business write off on their taxes and sponsor 42 of their blog brothers and sisters to a game. What a way to invigorate the laid back Staples crowd. In fact, I invite all very rich Lakers Bloggers to sign up now as one of the sponsors of the LA Times Lakers Blog luxury box at Staples. I figure there must be hundreds of grateful Lakers Blog readers and posters out there who could afford to do this. And I would be happy to play God and hand out the tickets. LOL.
I mean, seriously, if I had an extra million, I would do it. So, let’s how grateful the rich Lakers Bloggers are for the blog. I bet there are some fans who would do it. How cool would it be to have a Lakers Blog luxury box or even section at Staples. Maybe AK and BK could lobby for the times to put up some bucks too. Great idea, Larry.

This is a great opportunity for science - probably a Nobel Prize in it for the K bros if they want to observe and document. (As long as they don't use long strings of hyphens in their write-up!)
So what happens when the unstoppable force of AIs lack of interest in defense meets the immovable object that is the incredible defensive intensity of Kwame Brown?
The world awaits ...

Game day! Love it.
The Lakers can't sleep on this Indiana team. They've got to come out with a defensive lock-down mentality and put this game away early. Expect the home team to make some runs. Expect the Lakers to answer. Come on, bench. Let's see it!

just like last year, this laker team will burn out in midseason. injuries will come, and losing will rise. Kobe will leave once he realizes that this team (although talented) is just too injury prone and isn't built for the long run. hmm a thought of kobe and Lebron isn't a bad idea in New York. dont get me wrong but im not a knicks fan, but you get the picture, your franchise player will leave you guys

AK/BK - thanks for the Ariza link. Feature articles that give us new information on the Lakers (considering how much we read about them) are few and far between.
So, who guards Kobe the most in practices? Is it Ariza? If so, that's gotta be beneficial for both of them.

Posted by: mamba24 | December 02, 2008 at 10:22 AM
I'm a little worried..This incredible great start by Lakers is in the forefront and Boston is only 1 game behind! If the Lakers lose tonight then Boston has the best record in the NBA. Boston is trying to send L.A a message and L.A needs to show how tough they are by matching the pressure. We cannot have a letdown otherwise Boston will get a mental edge.
Boston is older so they should have problems keeping this pace. Luckily for us, the west is a little weaker this year and we should be able to kill more teams without the starters going the full 48 minutes.. That's an advantage Boston had last year..They could coast during the year because the east was so bad.
Posted by: zen | December 02, 2008 at 10:22 AM
If you look at the standing, it seems an easy ride with the Pacers who are 6 - 10 but if you refer to their roster they have 8 capable scorers who are also tall. I hope the Lakers will be careful with this team and playing there as a visitor. Based on history, lakers had a hard time winning at Conseco stadium. If they stick to business, sticking with defense like a leach, I don't see any problems. If they play around again of too much alley hoop, it may bounce back to them. Right now, Pacers have no chance of beating the Lakers, only the Lakers will beat themselves. Go get them for Mamba 24.
Posted by: Edwin Gueco | December 02, 2008 at 10:22 AM
fire32,
Nice revisionist history there pal. I bet you think the Suns won the championship last year!
Not sure how you call leaping to the top of the western conference and making it all the way to the finals "burning out in mid-season" but it's hardly even close.
That being said, I can understand why you can't help but watch the Lakers now, they're 3 times as fun as the Suns ever were, and the Suns are now the most sad, boring, wretched team to watch in the whole NBA.
Posted by: Mayor of Kobe Town | December 02, 2008 at 10:23 AM
Wasn't Danny Granger drafted in the same year as Drew? Based on the draft scouting reports, I was hoping the Lakers would draft Granger that year. He seemed to be the versatile SF that would've been perfect for the Triangle. But I guess Mitch and Jim Buss knew what they were doing in taking a big risk in drafting a very young and raw Drew. Granger probably would have made a more immediate impact for the Lakers, but Drew appears to be the better long term investment.

Memo to FIRE:
Wishful thinking is NOT serious analysis.
Posted by: Eric M. | December 02, 2008 at 10:33 AM
Mamba24,
"Hey Season Ticket holders at the game. If you can’t show some enthusiasm & support for your team, give your tickets to others in Laker Nation who are more into their team than they are into themselves."
Abso-fricken-lutely.
I want our crowd on December 25th to be like a home game for the Detroit Red Wings. I know if you, I, Charles, and Pig were there, that would be the case.
We have high expectations as Laker fans and I understand, based upon the cost of tickets, that some fans feel that are "due" to be "entertained" by the Lakers.
I understand the expectation that the team should win; however, what I do not understand is how many "fans" feel that it is only joyful to support your team when they are winning in the last two minutes of the game.
It is a JOY to support your team. It connects you with your team and it LITERALLY helps your team to win, especially during difficult moments. That is a true and literal joy and the fact that many elitist Lakers season ticket holders don't connect with that joy makes me sad, because it not only hurts the team but also shows that they are more into themselves than they are the outside world and the joys it has.
It is a joy to support your team and if you believe that you are a "fan" (as opposed to a ticket purchaser) then you have a duty to express your enthusiasm for your team and support their emotional energy in seeking victory.
IF YOU ARE A FAN, MAKE SOME NOISE!!!
What do we play for? RINGS!!!!!

It is a JOY to support your team. It connects you with your team and it LITERALLY
helps your team to win, especially during difficult moments. That is a true and literal joy
and the fact that many elitist Lakers season ticket holders don't connect with that joy
makes me sad, because it not only hurts the team but also shows that they are more into
themselves than they are the outside world and the joys it has.It is a joy to support your team
and if you believe that you are a "fan" (as opposed to a ticket purchaser) then you have a duty
to express your enthusiasm for your team and support their emotional energy in seeking victory.
IF YOU ARE A FAN, MAKE SOME NOISE!!!
What do we play for? RINGS!!!!!
Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

Mamba24 - just so you know - I hate Boston so bad, I want the ass-kicking on Xmas day to be so complete - so final - that the ugly green weenies end up wearing their asses as hats.

Magia32 is that you or someone else using your old user name?

Wow...Fire32...what can I say? I read your post and...I just couldn't wrap my brain around it. I tried I really did. I sat here and I smokes and smoked and smoked...and I almost understood the twisted and depraved logic that would cause such vile and incoherent statements to flow from that gaping nonsense hole you call a mouth. While I'm sure on some planet or parallel universe your logic works, but your problem here is this is Earth...water flows, air blows, felt feels and Kobe is going nowhere but the NBA Championship!
I pack you a virtual bowl sir...for having as much fun in a fantasy world as I do!
Inhale now as I blow smoke at the screen...
IT'S TIME TO WATCH THE LAKERS AND DRINK SOME BEER,
TOKE A BOWL AND SCREAM AND CHEER!!!!!!!! LAKERS 4 LIFE BABY!!!!!!
CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP

Anyone else watch the boston game on NBA TV last night? Of course, I didn't think about the fact that I'd have to listen to frickin' TOMMY HEINSOHN whine about how few free throws the celtics were getting ALL NIGHT LONG. Boston announcers are such boorish homers that I had to turn the channel after a few minutes because I couldn't stand listening to them anymore. It was like overhearing the conversation at a VFW bingo game, I swear.
Here's my beef with boston: they are loveable losers, but when they win they rub it in everyone's face. Look at Sox fans - I actually felt for them during the drought, but since they've won they've become just as obnoxious, if not more so, as Yankee fans. When the celtics were losing I felt for them, but now that they've won they think they own the freaking planet. Maybe when boston learns to win with style and class and trolls like LGCs stop spreading their hate bad things will stop happening to them. Brady's injury is just the beginning - boston is about to enter a new era of drought because karma is a BEEEOTCH.

Fire32,
I thought you were reformed. Why the negativity? Your analysis is off-base for two reasons: Depth and youth. Two factors which serve as bulwarks against the effects of injuries.
exheldovr/Tim-4-Show,
The Pistons cannot be a worse defensive team with Kwame Brown on the team. They cannot be. Even if statistics show that they allow 129 points per game with an average opponents shooting percentage of 68%, it doesn't matter. There are three types of lies: Lies, damned lies, and STATISTICS.
The only TRUTH that we can truly rely on is the magic of the golden calves: Kwame Brown. Kwame Brown = improved defense. It is a universal law--universal to relativity, mechanics, and quantum mechanics. It cannot be changed. It cannot be destroyed.
Thus...
The Detroit Pistons are a stronger defensive team... as long as Kwame Brown is on the team. He doesn't even need to play, just as long as he is on that team.
Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.
GO LAKERS!

"just like last year, this laker team will burn out in midseason. injuries will come, and losing will rise. Kobe will leave once he realizes that this team (although talented) is just too injury prone and isn't built for the long run. hmm a thought of kobe and Lebron isn't a bad idea in New York. dont get me wrong but im not a knicks fan, but you get the picture, your franchise player will leave you guys

I'm a Knicks fan and live in NY. But I have league pass and watch the Lakers from time to time. Do you think this Laker team is better than the Celtics. Trust me I was pulling for you guys last yearagainst Boston. Great bench play.
We have a cancer called Marbury on our team we are trying to get rid of. You want him? Hahahah.

Go Lakers!
LakerNation expects a 3 game sweep this week and expect 17-1 record by the time you fly back into town.
Breaking the franchise record has to be a goal now being this close and the teams that they play. Anything less than this would be considered a FAILURE!
Last year and this year it just seem the Lakers focus more on Defense when on the road than at home. Even the triangle gets run more than at home. Due to this anything less than a sweep is a FAILURE!
Andrew can you display the BEAST in back to backs this week? We shall see.
Is there anyway Ariza can play 48 every game? Let's just say that Rad's occasional 3 isn't doing it for me. The he Spreads the Floor assessment is a joke. His lazy defense is killing the occasional 3 benefits.
After watching most of the Celtic games this year (which is brutal to watch but it works for them ) we are going to need Ariza on Rondo if he isn't on Pierce. How bout 24 minutes on Rondo and 24 on Pierce. I would have to say Rondo is the 2nd best player on the team now behind Pierce. It just scares me to think JF or Farmar have to slow down Rondo and even more frightened thinking of RAD on Pierce.
I will be looking for 2 things on this trip. A sweep and how do the Lakers do in stopping PG penetration into the key. To be quite honest the only weakness I see in the Lakers is PG penetration into the key. If they could get a handle on that 70-12 is possible this year.
