Game Thread - Lakers at Hornets

My advice: Keep tabs on that C3P0 fella who's always got the ball in his hands. According to my research, he's not just a droid fluent in countless languages. He's one heck of a guard.
The jabber box is below the jump.

Well, I have to say that I am pleased with this win over NO. I do think NO is overrated as a team but I think it helps for the Lakers to come out strong and win by double digits. I think Pau did well but he needs to stop dribbling, in my opinion. Baby Bynum played more like a man tonight. He needs to do that 2x for the Xmas game.
So far, we own the west. Now it's time to take down the East!

Effort, effort, effort...
When this team gives it, they're really fun to watch...
If we give this kind of effort on Christmas day, I will be very, very happy...

Just watched the post-game interview with PJ.
He said that offensively, he was happy with the first half and not so much with the second half. Defensively he said he was happy with the sustained effort.
He talked about the match-ups against Boston and dropped in there that Drew will be a key to that. He characterized the Finals by saying that they played one half of terrible basketball on their home floor and that cost them game 4. His hope is that they have a good showing on their homecourt this time around.
He also said he was pleased with the way that Ariza was able to step up and guard CP3.
LOL - Worthy just said he doesn't have any Celtic friends.

Piggybacking on what PJ said about Drew being a key match-up for them against Boston, I really hope they don't try and force feed him the basketball b/c Boston will key in on that and disrupt the entry passes. We've seen how that doesn't work on this road trip already with those forced passes becoming turnover after turnover. I wouldn't put that on the kid for this game. I'd tell him to protect the rim like it was his mama.

Remember, these last two games don't count at all unless they win on Christmas, so that game actually counts for three.

All I want for christmas are matching Walton and Odom road jerseys!!!!!!
These guys are lakers for life!

I don't like making predictions or anything, but I predict that Paul Pierce will have at least 1 block on Christmas. And that block will come on a certain Laker's fadeaway. That Laker shall remain anonymous...

LAKERS HAVE HORNETS NUMBER…
While the Lakers have the Hornets number, tonight’s win was exactly what the team and its fans desperately needed heading into the Christmas Day showdown with the Celtics – a strong defensive effort combined with efficient inside-out offensive basketball that led the Lakers to outshoot the Hornets from the field, behind the 3-point line, and free throw line.
Defensively, this was definitely the Lakers’ best effort since early in the season, playing the pick and roll better than they have all year long. I have always been critical of Byron Scott and his offensive strategy, which is based on CP3 doing his thing or isolating West. There were long periods where the Hornets couldn’t get a good look against the Lakers defense. And when perimeter players penetrated, Drew and Pau were there to contest the shots.
Offensively, I love that the Lakers pounded the ball inside to Pau and Drew as well as KB. This game was won by the Lakers, especially Kobe, attacking and taking the ball to the rim to draw fouls and shoot free throws. Unlike in their losses, the Lakers shot superbly from the line, hitting 28 of 32 free throws, which again shows the advantage of attacking the rim.
While it is still a long season, it is becoming more and more likely that Drew will not be able to return to his pre-injury form until next season. I hope that I am wrong and the Lakers may still be a good enough team without the full Beast to still win it all, but Drew is still far away from being the totally dominant player he was last year right before he was injured.
At any rate, a big win for the psyche of the Lakers and the Blog. Of course, the chicken little bloggers who are convinced the Lakers cannot win it all without making a major trade will decry tonight’s win as meaningless “fools gold” because it’s not against the Celtics or Cavaliers. Pray what will they cry after the Lakers take down the Celtics? LOL.
As always, JMNSHBO (Just My Not So Humble Biased Opinion)! Lakers beat Boston!
And best wishes for a Happy Holiday to everyone on this great blog.

I have not seen that Laker team in quite awhile. It was good to see them.
Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum are the keys to the Boston game. If Lamar takes the ball to his high percentage areas which are driving to the hoop and posting up with those giraffe arms he can be effective if he goes up strong.
Andrew Bynum has lifted weights and trained for like half a year. If Bynum goes and demands deep post position, catches and tries to finish with authority or drop in jump hooks he can be effective.
If Odom or Bynum play soft or like space cadets or without an edge, it will put too much pressure on Kobe unless he drops 60 , Fisher, Pau and Vlad.
Yes Vlad is a ton more offensively functional than Luke Walton.
Vlad does what he does and does it better than Sasha at this time.
Sasha needs to get his "&&%&*$ in gear.
GO ARIZA, GO LAKERS, GO KOBE!
BEAT THE HELL OUT OF BOSTON!!!!

Ok - that was a great win I must admit!! Maybe I should just stop watching the games. I missed this one due to work and viola - the Lakers play much better! Don't really know who played well but sounds like there was a much better effort!! Awesome!! Let's hope the Lakers play the full 48 minutes on Christmas and kick some green azzzzz!!!!!!!
Posted by: SgtRoss | December 23, 2008 at 08:37 PM
Much better effort tonight. I don't think it changes a lot, but it's nice to get some momentum going into the showdown on Christmas. I liked the D in the first half, seemed like the guys were committed to playing hard and together. (why not every night?) The Laker's have had lots of success in N.O, so I think we play with a confident attitude against this team, basically, we've got their number. As for the Celtics, well that remains to be seen. If anything, it will give us an idea of what were capable of being, or not. Not gonna be to hard to get up for this one.
I like the idea of playing Ariza at guard a little bit. His length and athleticism can definitely help stop some of the guard play that seems to eat us up. Putting him on Rondo could be an interesting matchup. More interesting however will be how we handle the low post game. I think Gasol is playing incredibly consistent and giving us 100% every night. Bynum, on the other hand, is looking like a lost puppy with unsteady legs. I don't know what's happened to him but nothing about his game is sharp. His base is very weak. Did he stop lifting weights? He seemed much stronger and dominant last year. He looks light to me, not as physical at all. Attitude and footwork are not good either. He just doesn't seem to have the fire in his belly that got all of us so excited before his injury. He's supposed to our missing piece against Boston. Based on what I've seen out of him in the last month, that's wishful thinking. We'll see Thursday.

Wha? I'm watching the Denver/Portland game and the announcers just put the game in the refrigerator?!?!?
Posted by: lakers_sth | December 23, 2008 at 09:33 PM
Dooooood.
Chris Paul's dirty play is so embarrassing for basketball.
It's to bad, because he's a good player.
I'm just glad the officials caught some of the illegal stuff he was doing out there, like walking under players, grabbing, using the off arm, pushing for rebounds. Ridiculous.
The sad thing is that Paul gets away with it most games.
Great job by Ariza on Paul. Hopefully, this means we will see more of Trevor defending point guards, as everyone has been pleading the coaching staff to try.
Posted by: Amazing_Happens | December 23, 2008 at 09:34 PM
Also - the best part of Kobe's box score today - ZERO turnovers. If Kobe could just lower that turnover average, this team would reap great dividends from it. Just like in football, possessions are key in basketball, so I'm really happy about the bagel in that column for Kobe.
Posted by: Amazing_Happens | December 23, 2008 at 09:43 PM
Lakers can win against Hornets but loses to Wizzards, it's psychological problem. On Hornets, there is help and support to each other while onWizzards, they just coasting and turning it on when they wanted to. What counts most, is the Christmas Day win to avenge the previous embarassment during the Finals.
Well, did you know that the Chicken Little cause the win of this game, it is because of their critical remarks that players are threatened. I'm sure LO read the Hoopsworld article. When it comes to the need for trade or getting a PG help, got to be a little realistic than be an optimistic fool.

I loved the effort, intensity and especially the d in this game! They looked like they did when the season first started. Don't know what the players talked about but it seems to have taken hold.
Loved Trevor and Kobe in the back court. I think Trevor's going to end up with Jordan's spot.
I am SO ready for our showdown with Boston. I think Boston is in for a shakedown, man.
GO LAKERS!
I LOVE LA!
WE LOVE IT!

Yeah, I heard that Portland announcer talk about the refrigerator, too. They need to get off of Chick's cloud!

I thought that Faith's guy, Sasha, set the tone for the victory. Once Kobe picked up his second foul, Sasha came in and played some valuable minutes. He was a little overaggressive and picked up some fouls but I'd rather have errors of comission than errors of omission. He held the fort in the 1st Q. and allowed the Lakers to stay in the game.
Also was glad to see PJ experiment a bit. He had Kobe and Sasha in the backcourt. He used Fisher and Trevor together there and even had Lamar play some guard. Jordan's injury has Phil showing some flexibility with his rotations, which I think is a good thing.
Nice job by Fish chasing CP3 and disrupting NO's pick and roll. The man also hit some huge shots as usual. Momentum changing shots. Props to Fish.
All in all, a very game effort from The Show. Consider the events of the last week....First losing streak of the season. Losing Jordan. The continuing discourse concerning their so-called "underachievement". 4 games in 5 nights. The team definitely turned things around. Let's hope it continues.

I think the reality is that it will probably take Drew until next year to get back to playing at the dominant level he was playing in the month before he was injured. I was optimistically hoping that his great effort during the summer was a sign that would not be the case but there is no doubt that Drew is not a Beast right now. A top ten center but not a Beast. The problem is physical in my opinion: Drew just has not fully recovered from his injury.
I don’t think Drew has an attitude problem or is not trying because he has the big contract. I think he is obviously laboring physically and lacks the great quickness and hops that he showed last year and may not regain it until next year. Last year, he was grabbing boards well above everybody else. This year, it is rare that he catches a rebound without other hands also touching the ball. He may have increased his vertical by an inch in practice but in games, he is a few inches short at both ends than last year.
I also think that teams responding to his interior defense by pulling him out to the 3-point line and running high pick and rolls with him ended up in making him hesitant and prone to getting caught in between. Tonight was a good sign as I thought all of the Lakers did a great job defending the pick and roll. CP3 had a difficult time getting by the double team, especially in the first half. And the rotations were generally better.
I still think the Lakers can beat the Celtics even if Drew is not 100% by the Finals and assuming that both teams make it that far, which I think is highly likely. I am confident that Drew will slowly get better and be better by the Finals than now but the game on Christmas Day will go a long way towards showing where Drew stands now and how much better he will have to be by year’s end if the Lakers are to win the championship.
The worrisome aspect about playing the Celtics is that they match up better against the Lakers than any other team. In a way, they have our number much like I think we have the number of every other team in the West. Of course, Lakers teams have historically lost the early finals against the Celtics, been called soft, but then came back do dominate Boston.
Who wins on Christmas will be important but not as important as how Drew and Pau play. Combined, they need to outplay Perkins and Garnett. I also have a wild hunch that we just might see Ariza or Odom start at small forward rather than Walton. And I think Kobe is well overdue for a big shooting game against the Celtics. Lakers by 10 – 100 to 90.
JMNSHBO! How about them Yankees! Gotta spend it to win, Jerry Buss.

SgtRoss, it's funny, but the Lakers always seem to win when I'm not watching too, but only under certain circumstances as I will explain below. Also, If I cancel an event with a friend, wife, or kid, just to watch the game, we always lose. (If I try to get around this by recording the game, they also lose.) I've been following the Lakers for 30 years and it's always been like that. I had planned to take my kid to the zoo today so I missed the game, and I guess they played really well and won. I guess it's God saying that it's just a game after all and if I put my family, friends, and life in general before sports, my team wins. I tried deliberately not watching a game even if I didn't have anything else planned to see if that helps the Lakers win, but that doesn't seem to work, so there's nothing I can do about the Christmas game. They'll just have to win on their own. Also, if a friend guarantees or declares prematurely that the Lakers won, they lose. This happened both before Worthy threw the ball away in 1984 and again when the Lakers were up by 24 this year in the Finals.

Greetings Fellow Lakeshow Fans,
Here's a holiday recipe for a Lakers Christmas win vs Celtics:
*SPOONFUL OF ARIZA- Use him to guard and shadow Rajon Rondo EVERYWHERE and at times guard Pierce and Ray Allen (depending on the flow of the game and who's HOTat that time!)...Rondo is the key to their early sustained offense and transition...Lakers must make an individual and team effort to disrupt that portion of their strategy and SLOW him down, just as they did with CP3 TODAY...He's THAT GOOD this season...When he is not on the floor for the Celtics due to rest of foul trouble, their FEELGOOD flow is somewhat hampered. He DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE for them in that regard...
*POUND OF BENCH PLAY- Odom, Ariza (mentioned earlier), Radmanovic, Powell and Vujacic MUST match the intensity and physicality of the Boston reserves of Powe, Davis, Tony Allen and House when called upon. That means MOVING well without the ball, help defense to STOP penetration, rebound, spacing, screening, and play them STRAIGHT UP! NO FEAR!!! I have a feeling we might be seeing Powell often this game for his energy and physical nature (against Garnett to spell Gasol, who actually did a decent job on him during the Finals). Lamar playing point at times won't be bad either...
*A DASH OF MVP- If the Lakers can do the above mentioned, all KB24 needs to do is get the team involved, instill confidence on the floor and DO his thing...However, he must not take TOO MANY ILL-ADVISED jumpshots on the perimeter...TRUST ME, Boston will build the KOBE WALL as usual and INVITE that to happen 24/7...No need to revisit that aspect...He must look to penetrate more and run the action by using player screens to keep Boston HONEST either by scoring or passing to open shooters in space....Make Boston MOVE...The key is for him to not EXPEND SO MUCH ENERGY...Just play SMART TEAM BASKETBALL!
BTW, add Phil's ZEN to taste...
Merry Christmas to all...God bless and be safe. Staples will be rocking soon...

Phil's 999th victory tonight vs Hornets...Interesting...Chance for 1000th on Christmas Day vs Celtics...Intriguing...
What a victory it would be to savor ALL AROUND..
For that to HAPPEN, our Lakers must think DEFENSE (as showcased in second half against Memphis and New Orleans) and make Boston WORK on both ends...Let it snow, let it snow! Go Lakers!

I said it during the game chat but I believe that tonight's win closed a chapter of the Lakers season that began with the first game against New Orleans and PJ's comment about them "sucking the joy out of a win" which became a theme. We, as fans, got to the point where we couldn't even enjoy when the team won b/c of the poor play which also led to some unfortunate losses.
Christmas Day starts a new chapter. What happens that day will readjust the expectations and set the tone for the middle of the season.
I thought PJs comments about the next game were particularly astute. "To the victor goes the spoils. They get all the praise and accolades that go along with that". Boston is the defending champs. They (and their fans) are given the license to do whatever they want with that distinction until someone takes it away from them. We remember what that's like.
I hate Boston, the smug "new money" way they're acting this year and all the classless trolls and fans who act like idiots. But that's their prerogative just like it'll be ours when the Lakers deliver another championship.

I know this is going to be debated ad nauseum tomorrow (esp w/ no games on the schedule) but here are a couple of key things I'm looking at in the match-up:
Drew - It sounds like PJ is seeing there's a match-up to exploit against Perkins (probably also due to their lack of depth at that position if Kendrick gets in foul trouble). However, Drew has yet to respond in any situation where they've tried to force feed him early. It's repeatedly resulted in mutliple turnovers and I don't think it'd be any different against Boston. They aren't just going to sit there and allow easy post-entry passes. I think Drew should be given the task of defending the rim and taking Perkins out of his game. That's all I would put on his shoulders.
Rondo - Doc's main directive for Rondo is to push the pace and put the defense on their heels. Stopping the ball in transition is going to be key but not something the Lakers have done well. I think the idea that you can play off of him has become an obsolete way to defend him. I think we'll see a lot of Sasha and Ariza on him. If he's particularly effective, I bet Kobe will even want to try to shut him down.
Ray Allen v Pau - The reason I pair these guys up is b/c they are the players who've consistently been the most productive for their teams during the first 2/3 of the game. Ray's activity coming off screens causes a lot of scrambling. His deadly outside shooting isn't the only way he can hurt you. He's also very good off the dribble and getting a lot of short shot opportunities. The only way to properly defend him is try to contest everything. I hope that Pau is able to keep up his consistent production w/ KG defending him. It's going to be critical.
Pierce v Kobe - The crunch time (if there is a crunch time) battle will come down to these two. I'm guessing that it's not predetermined who is going to be on Pierce to finish the game. It'll depend on who is being effective out there and who is already assigned to who (ex if Ariza is guarding Rondo late). We know that Kobe's shots will be going up but will they go down? That's the big question.
Powe & the other Allen - Who is going to stop Leon "coast to coast" Powe? Craig Smith? Wait, he doesn't play for LA. Someone is going to have to muscle this guy to keep him from having an impact. My suggestion? Josh Powell. At the very least, he's going to win his fair share of rebound battles againt Powe and not try to force too much offensively other than his go to mid-range jump shot and putbacks. Tony Allen loves to drive and throw his body at the rim. That's what whoever is defending him (Sasha?) needs to remember.

If Portland wants to talk about the fridge let them do so. They know where it came from. As long as they give credit where credit is due, it should be all good. I do, however, dislike their announcers.

LakerTom,
I had previously noticed that Drew isn't lifting as much as he was last year in several previous threads. But, it seemed I'm the only one who noticed. I had predicted that it wouldn't be 'till late December or early January before he would regain that form. I had hoped I was wrong, but it looks like I might have been right.
Looking back at previous footage, Bynum used to get his elbows up to rim level. He hasn't done that at all this season. He's good, right now. Just not great.
The flip side is that last year, he would get way above the rim a couple of times a game then fizzle out by the end of the game because he had no stamina.
Now, he's not as high above the rim, but he can continue to go up over and over because his stamina is CLEARLY better this year.
Imagine him next season if he ever gets his old hops back to add to his new found lung capacity? Dominant.
Then, factor in another season of seasoning and what do we have here?
Dude is for real. Remember when it was just me and a couple of other bloggers singing Drew's praises (of whom I believe you were one)? I saw him in those Summer League games with Jordan and I just knew. His flashes of greatness back then were so great that I just knew.
I mean, let us digest this for just a moment; Drew doesn't play but 5 minutes in the first quarter, and not much of the 4th quarter, and yet we feel that he dominated the game...
The future is so bright for this kid.

I have been under the impression all year that if the Lakers were going to win that they would have to do something early to intimidate the Celtics. It's going to take Kobe or Trevor dunking on one of the Big 4 (Rondo) in order for the rest of the team to see that the stronger Celtics can be taken advantage of. Just my thoughts. Merry Christmas.

The best record in the NBA
But the Lakers would be ready
With something to say.
They finally found their game
Against the Hornets on Tuesday
They called it a warm-up
For the Big Game on Thursday.
Now their lockers are hung
With uniforms a glistening
They have a statement to make
The Lakers are determined to make sure
The Celtics are listening.
On Kobe
On Pau
On Andrew
And Fish
On Luke
On Sasha
On Trevor
Dunk strong with a swish.
The crowd at Staples
Comes for a game to watch with delight
The Lakers come determined to make them happy
On a Purple & Gold Christmas night.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I don't think we should read too much into this one game. It is good that they won, but the Lakers always seem to play NO and Denver well.
I want to see them play well against Cleveland, Detroit, Orlando, San Antonio, and obviously the Celtics before I can get any sense of how the season will go.

Pretty much what all of you said... a little surprised Sasha only played around 11 minutes but perhaps it makes more sense within the context of Phil trying different guard looks - Trevor and Lamar each taking their turn at advancing the ball and of course, Fish's continuing iron man minutes. Still, I'm hoping for more minutes for Sasha - the machine does better with extended driving hours.
Tom - I'm hearing you about Drew but I'm still hoping he hits a better stride by mid-season... that he plays into better shape, timing and confidence. JMCRABBY (just my curmudgeonly refusal to admit he won't be beast-like this year).

Best comment of the night...
EKJ - "I bet the Hornets playbook is one page"
LOL. Too true.

Finally a good game for the Lakers. Concur with all that we haven't played this well since earlier in the season. The Lakers and fans want for Christmas: Keep up this intensity and focus for the rest of the seasons.
Go Lakers, bury the Chowds on Christmas day.

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTIMAS
BEAT THE HELL OUT OF BOSTON
Historically and you can call up Magic Johnson, you have to, Lakers have to beat the team in the EAST that they potentially will face in the Finals once or twice. No better time to start than Christmas Day. The Celtics swept us last yr in the regular season and it showed in the Finals with their confidence. Cleveland swept us last yr and they went 7 with Boston. We have to beat Cleveland and Boston in the regular season to have the right MENTAL balance going into the playoffs.
A win over Boston and Cleveland is important for Lamar Odom's Laker future too. This is about Odom more than anyone.
This is secondly about Andrew Bynum who was not there last yr but supposed to be such a difference that Odom matters less.
Finally, this is about Kobe who has shot the ball veyr well against Boston once in the last 8 games. He has showed out in a Finals game twice in the last 10 Finals games. This is like a mock-Finals game that means a ton.
The Finals to some extent is on the line tomorrow. You can't tip toe around a bully, you can't hide and seek around a bully. As Jimmie Johnson once said as the Cowboys chased the 49ers, if you want to beat a GORILLA, punch him dead in the mouth!
The Laker Nation awaits the night before Xmas, we all want one thing.
