"Adjust font size:The question has come up a million times and was discussed at some length by a Lakers source today. Are the Lakers, who have been struggling of late, looking to make a move?
It seems they are, as our source told us today that there are a couple is issues going on behind the scenes that could lead to a major roster move. Of course, there has been plenty of talk about the team moving Lamar Odom, and it makes a degree of sense to link the Lakers with the Charlotte Bobcats in this area. The Bobcats are shopping basically everyone, and Gerald Wallace could solve some problems that are currently facing the Lakers.
Let's be clear - trading Odom would have nothing to do with Lamar himself wanting to leave. In fact, he told HOOPSWORLD over the weekend that he would stay in LA for less money just to continue as a Laker. That feature is coming soon, so watch for it.
No, this is about what Phil Jackson sees his team needing to gear up for what many believe will be another showdown with the Boston Celtics . . .and Paul Pierce. Gerald Wallace is a piece who would not only help contain Pierce, but also keep him busy on the defensive end.
The other issue facing the team right now, as you can probably guess, is that a couple of the guys who signed huge contracts over the summer are trying to do too much. Andrew Bynum and Sasha Vujacic feel like they need to score a lot of points to justify their deals, but the team doesn't necessarily need that from them. Points are good, but defense and, in the case of Vujacic, facilitating the offense more is what's called for.
There is also the Farmar issue, which is looking like a long-term problem for LA. While Jackson talks about this kind of injury often being a 2-3 games out kind of thing, Farmar is telling people he won't rush back. The meniscus is an injury that can damage a player long-term if they come back too soon. Farmar told reporters recently that he understands this is a business, and he doesn't want to risk his long term employment picture by coming back too quickly this season.
It sounds like the Lakers may be in the market for a point guard, as well."
Add the OJ Mayo for Kevin Love trade to Kevin McHale's greatest hits as GM.
I wasn't that impressed with the little I saw of Mayo when he was at SC, but from what I've seen during the first half, this guy is very impressive. ROY impressive. His shooting ability may give him the edge over Derrick Rose for ROY.
If we don't get LBJ in 2010, I'll push to get Mayo whenever he becomes a free agent. I'm pretty sure he's not gonna want to stay in Memphis for his entire career, esp with his marketing ambitions.
It matters who you start...I like Luke...I really do...he tries hard, and does as much with his ability as he probably can...he cannot, however, guard any SF in the league that I can think of off the top of my head...certainly, no starting SF I can think of...that handicaps the rest of the players, and forces them into rotations that burn us...AND, you allow someone to get hot at the start, like Gay did...their whole team fed off of that, and the easy buckets we then gave up on poor rotations...
Since Phil is experimenting anyway, how about starting either LO or Trevor? Shut teams down at the start...take away their hope early? Or, at the very least, go back to Vlade...he stretches the other teams "D" in ways that Luke can't, and he's hustling out there on "D" and rebounds...
I'm old school, and I know it...I would start Kobe, Trevor LO, Pau, and Drew...I would force teams to match-up to me...not the other way around...and I wouldn't substitute in groups...at the same time...every game...instead, one at a time...situationally...let the bench guys have more minutes with your starters...you could still keep the minutes down, because I think you would be putting teams away early...
Just my two cents...

Apologies to Christopher Blake but the only Lakers blog I ever visit besides this one is Jeannie's Journal on the Lakers website. Check out this little nugget where she discusses Marbury sitting courtside for the Knicks game and the Boston Celtics:
"December 18, 2008
I have received a few inquiries today about our game last night against the New York Knicks. People wanted to know why Stephon Marbury was sitting on the floor a few seats away from Spike Lee who was sitting in Denzel Washington’s floor seats. Well, a contact of Marbury’s called our office because he wanted to buy a seat for the game. It turns out that we had one available single seat for sale (no comps!) for $2,600 and he decided to purchase it with a credit card.
What was surreal was that at halftime the New York media surrounded him and what amounted to an impromptu press conference. Thankfully the fans in LA are used to media (these were not paparazzi but they did seem a little aggressive) and their ability to crowd their subject but no one complained – just another day in LA.
The game had a playoff atmosphere which was interesting since it is December and the Lakers haven’t played New York in the playoffs since Phil Jackson wore Knicks jersey. Thankfully, after being down by 15 points the Lakers got their rhythm back and won the game. The next home game brings the Celtics in a rematch Lakers fans have been waiting six months for – will it be more of the misery of Game 6 of the Finals? I don’t think my heart can take it. Why does it seem the Celtics have gotten better? Shouldn’t there be some kind of championship hangover? You know when they think they can take it easy in the first part of the season and then turn it on for the playoffs. Isn’t that what happens to teams? How did they get hungrier? They are on pace to finish 76-6. WOW."

It sounds like the Lakers may be in the market for a point guard, as well.
"Luke couldn't start for another team in the league...and would be lucky to get off of any one's bench..."
I totally disagree, Luke could start for a lot of teams in the NBA right now. Maybe not many championship caliber teams, but never the less, he could as least contribute to almost any team from here to Toronto.
I don't think that you are giving Luke enough credit for what he brings to the table. His knowledge of the game goes beyond most of his peers on the bench. A real catalyst on offense who is always looking to feed into the post.
Luke is the man, the whiteboy just needs to get his rhythm back ya see.
Aha! BD or anyone else want to say something about my predictions?
Anyway,
I really hope we can get Gerald Wallace? If Lamar does go, can the Bobcats buy out his contract so he could return to the Lakers. I actually like Lamar but I think he is just overpaid. He should be getting half of that money. I'm sorry Lamar, but business is business. Besides, I'm sure there are as many fine clubs in Memphis as there are in Miami....
Based on the Charlotte reports, Larry Brown does not like the game of Hollins 0.975M and Morrison 4.1M (total of 9.3 for two years), Wallace 8.2M (total of 49M for 5 years).
Lakers have two players with expiring contracts like Lamar @ 11.4M and Mihm 2.5M
If this goes thru, the total salary of Charlotte would be 38.1 in 2010, they will be in the market for LBJ and other marquee players plus a low 1st round draft pick.
To be fair, Lakers has to include Walton in the deal in order to decongest the shooting forwards, anyway, he does not know how to shoot long ball. lol!
I'm telling you we can get Caron Butler or Chris Bosh. The Wizards are having a very crappy season and I'm sure they're looking to rebuild. Jettisoning Butler for Odom can facilitate the problem. We may even get Antawn Jamison and Butler for Odom and Mihm.
Toronto also seems to be rebuilding. I really believe that these trades have a legitimate chance of happening.
Also,
I think we should pursue another point guard. I don't know if Farmar's injuries means more PT for Sun Yue. I think Phil should give more minutes to Sun Yue. I remember him doing a decent job on defense during the Olympics, blocked Carmello and altered a lot of other shots.
Is Javaris still in the picture? The coaching staff really liked him as a player and Tex even said he should get more PT.
What's Smush up to anyway?
I give Luke credit for doing the most he can with what he has...but I respectfully disagree...I do hope he gets his rhythm back...thanks for reading...
Lakers becomes the dark horse due to the injury of Farmar.
Who among the four do wish to get?
Pargo, Karl, Crawford, Lue, or Watson
Any of the five as long as Lakers don't make Luke Walton or Sun Yue as a PG at this time , we'll be a dead duck. If they leave Fisher playing 35 minutes per game, by June 09 he would need a knee replacement. LOL!
I like Trevor too, lately he was lagging behind in confidence, we need all kinds of help on the long ball. Gerald Wallace is money while losing the mickey mouse money LO (sorry Mr Barneynacles). If you have Kobe, Vlad, Fish, Trevor, Wallace we become competitive against the Celtics in June but not in Dec. 25th. Why? They need to study at the University of Triangle of PJ and Tex which I see a scrabble in defense. Why are the Lakers fond of double teaming? Is mano por mano not enough? I saw Vlad and Pau mus simpatico pero loco in going around the corners chasing all kinds of players. What is this new defense of Mr. Phil Jackson? Are other teams scared of the sight of Pau, Vlad and Luke attacking PG's? Hilarious for an observer who is not a coach!
I think I'd like to start the "I think Phil Jackson is a great coach, but I don't think he's infallible" bandwagon.
Looking back, I think one of his biggest mistakes this season were his comments after the NOH game on Nov. 12th. The Lakers built up a big lead in that game, lost it, but held on to win. After the game, PJ said that the team had sucked the joy out of a good victory or something to that effect. The next game against Detroit, they suffered their first loss.
I think that Phil's comments after the NO game fed into the perception that the Lakers should blow every team out. While his motivation may have been to keep his team focused and not be satisfied with a big lead and to finish every game strong, I think the end result was that the message certain members of the team heard was that winning wasn't good enough. That they were so good that anything less than a blowout win was somehow less than acceptable. That's a lot of pressure. Certainly we see examples of this type of thinking on this blog every day, where a lot of the commenters can't understand how a team with a lesser record than The Show can possibly give our heroes a hard time.
Anyhow, I'm sure that the blog will be filled with comments lamenting the Laker's close win over the Griz. I'm more inclined to take the win and be happy with it, because Memphis played well and the Lakers were not beaten by themselves or because of a lack of effort. I thought that Sasha played some serious defense against Lowry and Conley in the 2nd half. Kobe was Kobe. Baby was only able to stay on the court for about 21 mins. while picking up 4 fouls, but managed 13 points. The team defense only allowed Memphis 39 points in the 2nd half with only 16 in the 4th quarter. According to the Griz announcers, the Lakers scored on 7 straight possessions down the gut of the ballgame. An uneven effort to be sure, but a winning effort nonetheless.
I believe that the Lakers have GOT to live in the moment and concentrate on the opponent in front of them. Pat Riley used to constantly harp on defeating the "peripheral enemies". By this he meant the press, expectations from without and any other factor that could undermine team unity or concentration. Getting back to my original premise, I think that PJ needs to foster a stonger sense of purpose and togetherness. While I'm certainly not privy to the behind the scenes interaction between coach and team, what I'm seeing on the court strongly suggests a bit of a disconnect.
EJK, you're point is well taken. Ariza has many of the attributes of Gerald Wallace and at a bargain, but that's probably going to change in a couple of years when his contract comes up. Also, we'll see how he does against Pierce in a couple of days. If he can not guard Pierce 1-1, especially in the low post, I would go after Wallace.
I think that how the Lakers do against the Celtics will determine what the Lakers do in terms of trades. Although I doubt that the Lakers will win, it is possible that this current Laker team is uniquely suited for the Celtics, and you would want to at least test that out before making major changes.

As the Lakers get set to defend their title, Lakers tickets are going to be huge all season. Dodgers tickets and Angels tickets are also in high demand with another season of MLB baseball underway.
At what point do we finally get it that defense is what we need?
I mean we're step slow already with Luke...now we're not even trying to run back?

It sounds like the Lakers may be in the market for a point guard, as well.

Sorry Wesjoenixon, you beat me. Anyway, it may be worth repeating.....it is audacity of hoping against hope~!

chris,
"Luke couldn't start for another team in the league...and would be lucky to get off of any one's bench..."

That's some good news if it's true Mr. Edwin Gueco.

To be fair, Lakers has to include Walton in the deal in order to decongest the shooting forwards, anyway, he does not know how to shoot long ball. lol!

Edwin,
Just say no to Gerald Wallace. We already have Trevor at a fraction of the cost. I don't see how Wallace improves the team in any significant way.

Guys,
I'm telling you we can get Caron Butler or Chris Bosh.
What's Smush up to anyway?

warren with(those)butterknives ...
I give Luke credit for doing the most he can with what he has...but I respectfully disagree...I do hope he gets his rhythm back...thanks for reading...

J. Pargo is hottest commodity among PG. His salary of 4.0M could rise based on bidding of following teams:
Dynamo Moscow (contract is voidable due to failure to meet payment schedules to the player)
http://tinyurl.com/9284bu
Suns are inquiring...
Boston Celtics are also mentioning J. Pargo
and lastly, his recent former team, N/O Hornets
Lakers becomes the dark horse due to the injury of Farmar.
Who among the four do wish to get?
Pargo, Karl, Crawford, Lue, or Watson
Any of the five as long as Lakers don't make Luke Walton or Sun Yue as a PG at this time , we'll be a dead duck. If they leave Fisher playing 35 minutes per game, by June 09 he would need a knee replacement. LOL!

EJK,
I like Trevor too, lately he was lagging behind in confidence, we need all kinds of help on the long ball.

Edwin,
What player/players do you hope the Lakers get?

Personally, I kind of doubt we'll do any big trade... which is what I was saying right before we stole Pau from Memphis.
Anyone notice that the Birdman got 6 blocks tonight in the Denver win?
How many think we'll bring C. Karl back for something like a six-week deal while we sort things out?

JOMO
Just One Man's Opinion.
Sorry for the long post.
