A quick thought on records

December 18, 2008 | 11:39 am

71_72_lakers With their win Thursday night in Atlanta, the Celtics have won 16 straight.  That's a historically good streak- if they take their next two (certainly a possibility, given that the C's will host the Bulls and Knicks), Boston's run will be in the top 5 on the all time list.  But the stunning thing about 16 consecutive wins is that it's still less than halfway to the all time mark of 33 set, of course, by the '71-'72 Lakers

I'm not trying to make any comparisons between the current Celtics squad and Goodrich, Chamberlain, West, McMillan, and Co., or to further elevate the importance of Christmas Day, when everyone in Lakerland hopes Boston's streak comes to an end (if it hasn't already by the time they get to Staples).  No, I'm just bowled over at the idea a team could win 33 straight freakin' games in the NBA.  Are you kidding?  It's hard to win 33 straight against the computer playing NBA Live on X Box.

Would that qualify as an unbreakable record?  Is there a better one out there?  Admittedly, I'm better steeped in baseball numbers... what basketball mark do you think will stand for all time?

The Unbreakable record - 100 points in a game. Never going to happen.

"your problem, Shelly is you have no sense of history."
quote from the film, "The Contender"
History.
One must know it to avoid mistakes.
One must know it to achieve greatness.
Magic embraced it.
Remember 1979?
I was eight.
He embraced Kareem after winning his first game.
Why the embrace?
Magic understands what it means to be a Laker.
Magic was depressed when he lost to the Cs in 1984.
Why the depression?
Magic understands Laker history.
Magic understands losing to the Cs in un-acceptable.
Shaq and Kobe did not embrace Laker history.
They were to concern with their own history.
Together they failed (they should have won 6 rings).
Farmar does not understand history.
Memo to Mitch:
Please trade Farmar/Vlad/LO for an all-star point guard.
Memo to Mich:
Please play Josh Powell in LO's spot.
Memo to Andrew:
Do not be concerned with being called "A-Train"
Instead, be concerned with Laker history.
Become that big man you are meant to be.
The Lakers are more talented than the Cs.
However, the Cs understand their Celtic history.
Garnett's sit-down with Bill Russell blew me away.
KG understands history ("Bill: teach the C's way to win").
The Cs are on a mission (16 straight wins).
The Cs understand their history.
Kobe/Shaq did not embrace Lakers history.
Andrew/Jordan do not embrace Lakers history.
And to not embrace history is to repeat history
The Lakers must embrace their history against the Cs.
If they do not: they are doomed to repeat 07-08 history.

I think you hit it on the nose, that record of 33 straight victories is not going to be beat. I believe it is unbreakable. As far as other sports, such as baseball, one record that sticks out as unbreakable is the hitting streak, which I believe is somewhere around 56 games in a row with a hit by Joe DiMaggio.

Wow - I just watched the clip again of the 1988 game between the Lakers & Knicks...

MAN - that hook shot by Cap is sweeeeeett. I would LOVE to see Socks bust that particular move out against the green weenies on Xmas day.

If THAT couldn't get the crowd at Staples rocking, then nothing can.

"Farmar joines the whine club"

"Of course, it’s all about Jordan. Isn’t this a team game? Maybe instead of floating Sasha Vujacic’s name around the trading circles, the Lakers should put Farmar on the block.

What the team doesn’t need right now is whiners and complainers. They need role players and ones who understand what the goal is — the NBA (team) championship.

If these guys want individual recognition, perhaps they should play tennis."

Source: http://tinyurl.com/4ekzx7

Sasha to be honest had done a good job at times and when his shooting is hot he has contributed so so much.

Last year he was with Kobe on the floor many times and Kobe passed it to him so much and he became a nice 6th man.

Now he has Jordan Farmar who is only thinking for himself and to some of us bloggers that is a fine thing and Sasha suffering as a result (sorry about that Faith).

Jordan is so immature and is too arrogant to find out WHY he is playing bad and instead blaming it on the coach and saying that it doesn't suite his style.

“They’re not looking for me to do anything personal — just run our offense. It affects my performance and what I do."

Is it that hard really? Just run the offense. The triangle offense is an equal opportunity offense that gives everyone the right places to give them a nice shot through passing/cuts and he has a problem with that??

Don't even go to his non-existent defense skills beyond steals.

Maybe the Lakers shouldn't have exercised that extra year in his contract........

You know why we lost that Game 4 game and blown leads Hobbitmage? Try Jordan Farmar's weak defense and you want him to play defense when he doesn't want to.....

-blitz

C'mon BK, the answer is obvious. NO ONE is EVER gonna match Wilt's 100 points. Too much parity in the league and too much political correctness for one man to pour it on like that. Even Kobe's 81 needed weak shooting teammates and a close game to happen - and that was still NINETEEN points short.

It's all about the Lakers!

Good news, Laker fans...Tickets are now on sale to see Celtic Woman perform live at The Greek Theatre on 4/25/09! These are the 5 most beautiful women on Earth, especially that cute violinist.

Poor Jerry West... he couldn`t even enjoy the 33 game streak. By then, we had already turned him into a morbidly depressed man.

Poor Phil Jackson...he`s gone from Michael Jordan to Jordan Farmar in less than 10 years!

WIlt Chamberlain's single-season records.

Records? You mean like vinyl? Cuz I hear it's making a comeback......kind of like Smush is..... That's the new record - how many teams will Smush play for who don't really want him but sign him anyways.

I think you hit it on the nose, that record of 33 straight victories is not going to be beat. I believe it is unbreakable. Wilt's 100 is the only one I can think of...

Jordan Farmer is nothing more than a Chucky Atkins but 10 years younger, a shoot first point guard who doesnt play defense

Wilt scoring 100 in a game in 1962 & Wilt averaging 50.4 PPG in in that 61-62 season. Those should stand for all time.

The time I was shooting in the driveway, and made two free throws with no time left on the clock to send the NCAA finals into overtime, followed by scoring 11 points in OT (including 2 four point plays) to win the title for UCLA, followed by a monstrous 20 point fourth quarter in game 4 of the Finals to lead a Lakers sweep of the Celtics. This all occurred in the space of 8 minutes.

Oh, and I took the trash out, too!!

Not too many basketball records are unbreakable actually. Here are a few I don't think we'll ever see broken:

Wilt's 100 points
Lakers 33 straight
Boston's 9 titles in 10 years
Wilt's 55 rebounds
Scott Skiles' 30 assists
Elmore Smith's 17 blocks
Chris Paul's new consecutive games with a steal streak

All records are made to be broken period

kobeblitz,

you wrote: You know why we lost that Game 4 game and blown leads Hobbitmage? Try Jordan Farmar's weak defense and you want him to play defense when he doesn't want to.....

my response: Let's be honest. No one person is capable
of losing a 24 pt. lead! The TEAM lost a 24 pt. lead and
that starts with Phil being out coached by Doc Rivers
and rolling down hill to the 1st unit not playing good
enough defense and the second unit being out-hustled.

Yes, I want Jordan to play defense when he doesn't
want to. Just like I want Lamar to play defense when
he doesn't want to.

You can whine about Jordan all you want to, but Jordan
worked on his game this summer and Lamar didn't. If
you're looking for people to be disappointed in, start by
looking at yourself in the mirror. After that year goes
by you can then go to Phil Jackson for his rotation/
coaching. After that week goes by, you can then go
to Mr. Inconsistent [ Lamar ]. After that DECADE goes
by, Jordan Farmar will have elevated his game and you
will have to look for another youngster to gripe about.

It is SAD and PATHETIC that you cut no slack to one of
our "youngings" who has worked on his game every
summer & is trying to do what the coach has asked of
him. What makes this worse is that we have the second
best record in the NBA. What makes it worse than that
is that you're not calling out *YOUR* man Lamar, the
slacker, Odom. Yes, I understand that he had a great
game while sick. I applaud him for that. yes, it shows heart. Where has he been for the other 19 games?

100 points in a game. Can't be touched.

--Fearless

50 point scoring average...averaging a trip-dub for a whole season (Oscar Robinson)...

It was bad enough that our 69 win record was broken by the Bulls, if the Frickin's Celtics break the 33 game record pestulence, plague, famine, and whatever else the horsemen bring would be mere child's play, but the Apocalypse would surely be upon us....

GO LAKERS !!!

Wilt Chamberlain's 20,000 women claim. That's puttin' in work!

Wilt Chamberlain 23924 Total Rebounds

Career average of 22.9 Rb/gm

Un-freaking real.

The closest active player is Shaq, and he's over 11,000 rebounds behind Wilt. Next is Duncan, and he's 13,000 behind.

The current perennial leader in rebounding is Dwight Howard. If Dwight Howard raises his per year average by another 3 reb/gm, it will still take him 16 more seasons to achieve that level.

No chance anyone catches The Stilt.

PARGO!

What I find funny about farmer is that he thinks he will be the starting pint guard when fish retires yet he cant guard 5'9 nate robinson what do u think will happen in the playoffs if the lakers come up against parker paul williams and nash.

Im glad he got yanked against the knicks in 9 minutes he took 6 frickin shots and hes supposed to be the point guard who sets up the offense.

If I was the lakers after they resign ariza I'd get him 2 improve his ball handling in the off season and turn him into a ron harper type and if they resign lamar have him at small forward.

Then the lakers starting 5 would be ariza bryant odom gasol and bynum and with the first round pick this year draft a solid small forward who could play off the bench as Josh Powell could give 15 minutes off the bench. Our 2010 first round pick goes 2 memphis as part of the gasol trade.

I dont think we can have 2 shoot first players off the bench in farmer and sasha

I second this!

Yeah, Wilt for sure. Brain fart.

As to what someone else said, records are meant to be broken. And hate to say it, and hope it doesn't come true, but the Celtics could break the Lakers 33 game winning streak at the rate they are playing. So it comes important that the Lakers beat the Celtics this Christmas day not only for redemption...but also for saving their 33 game winning streak.

But speaking of records, I want to start up a new one for those of us who participate in the chat sessions during the Laker games. Lets see how many days in a row we as fans...True Fans, can go without disowning our team and individual players just because we are having a bad game or whatever. When it comes down to it, even those people who play on the Los Angeles Lakers roster are exactly that....people! They are human and I'm sure this team is putting in their best effort night in and night out. There isn't one team in the NBA who is flawless. Every team has it's goods and bads about them and truthfully, I think this Laker team is one of the best we've had for many years. It's a more complete team than what I've seen in years and one of the best Laker teams I've seen since the 80's Lakers and the recent early millineum Lakers.

Go Lakers!

ship his A$$ out

"It is SAD and PATHETIC that you cut no slack to one of
our "youngings" who has worked on his game every
summer & is trying to do what the coach has asked of
him."

Again I don't want to win in the next 5 YEARS those years will probably be dominated by Lebron, Wade, and Dwight Howard.

Again you always "forgive" Jordan Farmar and the rest young players even when they are playing bad!

I'm hard on Lamar and not once but 7 times this season I've called him "bone headed" and lethargic.

Just like you always appear when Trevor does well and you are NO WHERE to be found when he does bad!

You said that he is a good 3 point shooter (granted not Radman/Derek) but look at him now: 28.6% from 3 point land not to mention the misses from the mid range game. As I said before his strength is near the basket but no you go out and say He worked out so much in the summer as some LAME EXCUSE!

You want so say "work out hard in the summer"? Try Kobe, Pau, and even Derek Fisher! That excuse you want to give me is so lame it's not even FUNNY!

"Yes, I want Jordan to play defense when he doesn't
want to."

Too bad he ain't listening to you! He hasn't shown ANY heart this season and had to have the 1st Unit bailing him out of supposed to be blowout wins such as Philadelphia, Washington, and Sacramento.

If there were one person who is playing at well decently off the bench it would be Trevor followed closely by Lamar. Sasha is still not consistent but it is understandable (Jordan's ball hogging).

I'm hard on Jordan just like I was on Bynum. Bynum stopped being soft and created his own offense and now he is a man! Thing can't be said of Jordan Farmar.

Jordan Farmar WILL NEVER BE THE DEFENSIVE GUY YOU IMAGINE HIM.

You can gripe all you want about "defense wins championship" crap but until Jordan plays defense, dribble penetration will always be against us at a more CONSISTENT rate than if Derek was on the floor!

What is SAD and PATHETIC you always want to give EXCUSES to the young team when the veteran Boston team who was so OLD (PJ Brown and even Sam Cassell) MANHANDLED the young Laker squad besides Kobe, Pau, and yes even Lamar.

Boston showed that with VETERAN Leadership (along with great talent) that they will win. You can give excuses about "how they worked on their game in the summer" but BOSTON won't give a damn and play down to the youth of the Lakers. Same thing with the Lakers with Kobe and Shaq. There were SO many veterans on that team like Rob Horry, AC Green, Ron Harper, Brian Shaw, and even Shaq and they along with Kobe led the team to the titles. We didn't win those games because of Mark Madsen!

Same thing with Cleveland. LBJ is young but he is surrounded by VETERANS and with a good talent such as Mo Williams that Cavs team that won 47-35 is having the 3rd best record in the NBA and unlike us is blowing out teams like Minnesota (which we couldn't even blow out at Staples Center!)

I want to win THIS YEAR and the next one as well. I don't have time for 5 YEARS when Sasha/Jordan *could* be good players and we don't even know if that is possible!

Don't believe me here's some facts for you:

2008-Boston: Majority of them veterans save for Rondo
2007-Spurs: Majority of them veterans save for Tony Parker where he stepped up and won the Finals MVP though Duncan was there to allow him to win that.
2006-Heat: With the exception of D-Wade most of the team were veterans
2005-Spurs: Majority of them except for Tony Parker were veterans and he was shut down by Chauncey Billups!
2004-Pistons: Again majority of them were veterans
2003-Spurs: They won and most of them were veterans and had an aging David Robinson. And only one young guy (Tony Parker) and a rookie sensation of Manu.

So why don't you stop with the excuses and trying to shield the youngings from their mistakes and stop trying to bring Lamar Odom into the conversation. Those young guys may win games and show us FLASH but FLASH DON"T MEAN SUBSTANCE (Winning the big one!)

In other words I'd rather have a defensive stop than a STEAL! Steal is not a great measure of good defense! It merely means you have great anticipation but heck you can have great anticipation but still be blown around! Jordan Farmar is a good stealer but he just lets guys like Beno Udrih go by him! Do you consider that great defense!?

Who was the one who got embarrassed by Deron Williams (Jordan Farmar). Who was the one who settled for jumpshots in the playoffs (Ronny Turiaf). Who was the one after having one great game suddenly couldn't find his shot in the finals (Sasha)? Trevor gets a pass here because he was rusty and coming off injury.

Who led us past the Nuggets (Pau and Kobe). Who was the one who could only handle Deron Williams (Fisher) and also shut down Boozer (Pau) and also scored a bunch against the *physical* Jazz? (Kobe). Who was the one who took advantage of the single coverage and shot 50%+ against All First Defensive Team Stalwart Bruce Bowen (Kobe Bryant)?

Oh that's right you just want to give them young ones excuses and a pat in the back and baby them like Bynum used to be until he grew out of it and became a man. The same Jordan Farmar who got schooled by Nate Robinson, TJ Ford, Andre Miller, and was responsible for BLOWING the leads on Indiana, Washington, and unable to put away teams like Minnesota and Sacramento and playing pathetic defense. Imagine what Rondo, Deron Williams and CP3 will do to him? And he's complaining?

Until then don't even try me, trying to deflect them and always bring up Lamar Odom is SAD and PATHETIC!

-blitz

when will ever Fish and spastic, frantic Farmar will have TOGETHER a double-double. is that too much to ask?!

rondo already had his first triple-double ...... and he is also 3rd in steals in NBA after Kidd and CP3. pretty good company ....

maybe he worked on his game during the summer?! or maybe he worked on his mind?!

blitz,

>>>>>J-Critt I knew had bigger potential but I knew back in 2007 that Farmar had a
>>>>>better edge than Critt because Farmar knew the offense better. Now with
>>>>>Farmar's flaws exposed and him disgruntled combined with his me-first play
>>>>>I wouldn't mind J-Critt who I think had more skill, better defense (who didn't
>>>>>gamble as much), and simply a confident but not cocky attitude than Farmar.
>>>>>Heck he's been rottting in the bench yet I haven't really heard him really complain.

With all due respect, blitz, you are rapidly becoming a “Zakee” clone with your constant and at times unfair criticism of Jordan Farmar. And now you have lost credibility completely with your suggestion to replace Jordan with J-Critt, who couldn’t even earn garbage minutes with the Grizzlies. There is a reason why he is “rotting” on the bench in Memphis. The guy will never be an NBA player. And he certainly won’t be coming back to the Lakers.

Whatever happened to the balanced and respectful blitz we have all come to love? You’ve just turned into another hater who has allowed his hatred to addle your brain and logic.

I love you, blitz, except when you have a brain fart like your love for J-Critt.

"The only streak that matters is the one in June" - Ron Harper

Kareem's All-Time scoring record will be tough to break because he played into his 40's and had an unstoppable shot. The only chance is one of the 18 year olds (Le Bron or Kobe, really) because they got the 3 year head start and they are the focal point of their respective offenses.

Wilt's 100 in a game looks pretty safe, although Kobe could have gotten close if he had played in the 4th quarter against Dallas when he was sitting on 62. I think the right guy on the right team could do it. A Dwight Howard or Andrew Bynum could do it, especially if they develop a 15 foot set shot and improve their free throw shooting.

Scott Skiles 30 assists could be taken by Chris Paul, I know it recquires teammates to hit shots, but if they made an effort to do it, I think the way that team is built and his ability to thread the needle with his passes, I think he could do it.

33 wins seems the safest to me, because the travel in the NBA is more frequent, the talent is more watered down from team to team because of expansion, and the players are not as competitive, as awhole, as they were back in the day. More guys play for pay checks (Stephion Marbury) than for pride.

33 wins is my hands down winner.

There's no fricken way that the Celtics will beat our 33 game win streak.

They have to play us on Christmas Day.

What do we play for? RINGS!!!!

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

justanothermambafan,

>>>MAN - that hook shot by Cap is sweeeeeett. I would

See, I was kinda thinkin' the same thing. It could be Sasha
or Luke or Rad. Maybe even Lamar. And I'm not talking about
taking a shot when the game is stopped, just have them watch
for a moment in the game when none of the refs are watching
and give Kevin Garnett a good swift groin punch, ala Chris Paul.

http://tinyurl.com/4pbcgr

The object isn't really to hurt KG, but just to piss him off enough
to take a swing. I'll take Sasha and KG getting ejected any time.

If that doesn't work, maybe try this move:

http://tinyurl.com/4przky

Just remember that it took two ex-Celtics to coach the Lakers to their 33 game streak and Jerry's only title as a player; (Sharman & KC Jones) look at the photo. Red could have lit another stogie for that championship as well.
