Its another Lakers-Clippers Wednesday!
Programming Note: Join us for Purple, Gold, and Blue at 11 am, where our guest will be FSN's Patrick O'Neal. Just watch on the blog, or hit the chat board by clicking here.
Since that's apparently how the NBA schedule makers roll, this being the second consecutive hump day to feature the Staples Center roomies squaring off (7:30 pm PT, FSW). The opening act ended in a 117-79 romp. Does that mean the Lakers are expecting another walk through the lilies? Nope. Last week's contest featured a Clips squad that suffered through an injury-riddled training camp with chemistry impossible to create. Granted, the seven days following haven't produced as much jelling as losses (their record is now 0-4), but practice occasionally makes perfect and Marcus Camby is back, so perhaps the Clips can buck a recent Laker-centric trend.
Then again, between the long layoff and some exceptional, occasionally complex depth, the Lakers are definitely the better-rested party. And it would have been considerably easier for the red, white and blue were Kobe one of their players, a scenario he flirted with back in '04 and no longer wants to discuss.
Other Notes
- George Karl is happy about getting Chauncey Billups, but praises AI on the way out.
- Spurs F-C Fabricio Oberto is back in action after missing time with an irregular heartbeat.
- Everyone should root for Greg Oden to have a great career (it's just good for the league), but for the Bill Simmons haters among our readers, here's some extra incentive.
- One week into the season is a little early to start analyzing award front runners, but that won't stop ESPN.
- Whole lotta sports dudes (including Suns legend Kevin Johnson) getting elected into office.
- If Dice gets bought out by Denver and isn't dead set on a Day-twah return, Boston is interested in making him a younger version of P.J. Brown.
- Starbury is going through a rough time in Knick Land, but at least he hasn't lost his sense of humor.
- All-NBA good guy Eric Snow begins the next phase of his roundball life.

Hey, I'm going to the game tonight and was wondering if anyone knew of a good place to grab a bite to eat in Staples vicinity? I've gotten a few e-mails saying the traffic is going to be extra bad due to something at Nokia so I figured I would just go downtown early and just hang out.
Thanks guys...

LIFE AND BASKETBALL
Out with the old in with the new, If Obama can do it The Lakers can too.
No more can Impossible be said, This year Lakers stomp Celtics dead
Exhelodrvr be proud of the race that your guy ran
At the end McCain proved to be one Elle of a man
Life is like basketball, basketball is like life
Both full of drudgery and toil and tension and strife
But then every so often something wonderful comes your way
Like a man named Barack and a player named Kobe
Like a player named Magic who added excitement to the game
Like a cool feisty grandpa, straight-up Maverick John McCain
Some people like the Triangle, others like the run and gun
No mater the choice, they both get the job done
In the decades to come 2009 will hold 2 great memories
The start of a new Laker era and an Obama Presidency
The year that a nation closed ranks and faced adversity as one
The year a team named the Lakers played defense & a title won
Life and basketball are both the same
It’s not the winning that counts it’s how you played the game
McCain was like the old Pistons he did whatever to get a win
Obama was like The Lakers who won with class, again & again
But at the end of the day when the race was done & thru
They both showed class & grace that touched the hearts of me & you
So Barack Obama today we salute you for an outstanding Victory
In the future you will take the reins of an entire country
John McCain we salute you to, for you played with one hand tied
But you’re a soldier and a Patriot and at your concession speech I almost cried
Much Like the Lakers who shook Bostons hand even though in pain
You gave a classy speech cause you’re a classy man Senator John McCain
And so The Lakers played the role of John McCain Last year
This time they are Barack Obama NBA do I see fear.
Like Jeet Kune Do that adapts to whatever the opponent tries to do
The Lakers can play all styles so opponents it’s up to you
Do you want your but kicked fast or do you want it kicked slow
Does not matter cause it will get kicked didn’t your mama tell you so
So the election now is over and a Laker Dynasty now begins
Laker Blog it’s back to Blogin & counting the titles the Lakers win
*
No stirring speeches, for God’s sakes we’re playing our little brothers

Okay, so the Lakers are +21.7 while the Clippers are -21.5 in their games so far. What's the math on that? I think I might need Hollinger's help but knowing him, he'll come up with an equation that says the Jazz win the game. The Accuscore projection on espn says the Lakers win this match-up 93% of the time. So what will probably happen is the Lakers win a nailbiter. I won't be there. I donated my tix to the Salvation Army.
Boston looked good last night against Houston. It was a game of runs with both teams finding ways to disrupt each other's offenses but Boston's disruption of Houston was more consistent. Plus Boston showed better ball movement on offense. They had much better looks. So, since the Lakers don't play Boston until Christmas, the next best thing will be to see how they fare against a common opponent when they take on Houston this Sunday.

I know, I know, I promised I wouldn't post but when someone calls Kareem "a ninny" ... well, I have to express my frustration.
I usually enjoy Bill Simmons' columns but he has got to be a nincompoop if he thinks Cap's a ninny, and dares to say it out loud.
Simmons' been wrong before, but he's never been this wrong ever.
Posted by: Glenn | November 05, 2008 at 09:59 AM
AK/BK,
As a Bill Simmons hater, I found myself hesitating while reading his article. He made sense and what I've seen echoes what Bill Simmons concluded.
I like Greg Oden (for a Trailblazer) but there is plenty of reason for concern regarding his future as a player.

From the Daily News: "Bynum was injured when he tried to block teammate Chris Mihm's dunk attempt during Monday's practice. The pair collided and Bynum got the worst of it."
Translation: Chris Mihm posterized Andrew Bynum, throwing down on the young multi-millionaire.

What a great day in America.
Simmons' opinions are often hard to swallow but, man, that guy is a very good writer. I hope he's wrong too. Greg is a cool dude.

I'd like to read more articles like Bill Simmons' on Greg Oden.
More articles that address the real personality issues of a player and make it clear how those issues affect the way journalists report their stories.
It's a lot easier to root for or against players and teams when you feel you really know them as people.

AK/BK,
I will assume it was an "accident", but what happened to two of my posts from last night on our "political" thread. They were not vulgar or profane or over the top in any way, they just dealt with taxes. Did I miss something in the rules or was it just an oversight on your part. I really, really hope you weren't censoring one civil opinion and not the other.
Please let me know.

"No stirring speeches, for God’s sakes we’re playing our little brothers"
Clippers = Lakers' little brothers.
Sure, you still beat up on your little brother and sit on his chest and make him punch himself while asking, "Why are you punching yourself? Huh? Why are you punching yourself?"
But he's still your little brother.
Go Clippers!

Mamba24, that was as inspirational as Obama's speech last night. Though in a totally different context lol.
Lakers today, Lakers tomorrow, Lakers forever!
Meanwhile, don't overlook the lowly Kings tonight y'all. They're coming off a major defeat. For some that means it's war. Though I suspect for the Clippers, it's a work day as usual lol.

PSLakerfan,
No, it wasn't by accident. As I already explained in the previous thread, we're back to not allowing politically-centric comments through. The deleting had nothing to do with the content or which side it favored. It was a matter of "starting Wednesday," no more. Nothing personal, it was applied evenhandedly and hope you understand.

I just had an image of the Lakers winning the NBA Championship going to the White House afterwards to meet President Obama.
Then afterwards the Lakers play a pickup game in which Obama glides past Sun Yue for a layup and then is schooled by Derek Fisher.
Derek Fisher and Obama form a quick friendship. Discuss politics.
Then...
2016 = Derek Fisher for Mayor of Los Angeles.
It's just the beginning.

Charles and King Kwamelo - well, I have fully investigated Pizarro/Corte's rumor of "Pau to New York" and can now report that yes, it is indeed true - the Lakers will be in New York next month to play the Knicks and it seems that Pau will accompany the team on their trip east... and will even play!
Here's a couple more tidbits that I've been able to confirm. D'Antoni will be coaching the Knicks and will yell at some people. Starbury will be on the bench and will glower toward the cameras. Phil Jackson will be coaching the Lakers.
You heard it here first.

PSLakerfan,
No, the cut off wasn't 12:01 am this morning. It was 7:30 am, when I woke up. If the political comments hadn't gone through by then, they didn't go through. Again, nothing personal and nothing to do with party lines. Sentiments leaning left and right were deleted.

Regarding eating Downtown...
If it were me, I'd either get Chinese food on Spring Street in Chinatown...
Or go to Phillipe's near Chinatown and get me one hell of a French dip sandwich with lamb...
Or I'd go to The Original Pantry near the south end of Downtown.
I wouldn't eat too much though. You should expect free tacos tonight.

If there is no more political speech, why have I seen OBAMA posted 10-20 times today?
You agree with the posts so they are OK?
Posted by: Eric M. | November 05, 2008 at 01:31 PM
Eric M,
To the best of my knowledge, the posts that went through TODAY that mention Obama literally just say his name. There's nothing about his policies, against McCain, etc. Thus, there's nothing to "agree" with.
If you see something different, point them out and if need be, I'll delete them. But seriously, it's ridiculous to accuse BK or I of having an "agenda" of sorts in this. We let dozens of comments through yesterday arguing both sides and we did as a concession of sorts to our readers. People complaining about it is exactly why we've been reluctant to ever make an exception in the first place.
AK
Posted by: Andrew Kamenetzky | November 05, 2008 at 01:34 PM
Eric M,
Fine, I'll delete that comment, despite it saying nothing about Obama other than Mamba 24 being being happy about him being elected. Will that do?
Again, this is why BK and I have made the "no-politics' rule to begin with and try to strictly enforce it. Everyone starts complaining about someone else having the "last word," reads into every comment for signs of us being "partisan" and takes it all WAY too personally. It's not worth the hassle.
AK
Posted by: Andrew Kamenetzky | November 05, 2008 at 01:44 PM
Eric M
I know from personal (recent) experience that the K bros are not displaying a pro Obama bias. (oops mentioned his name). Really I fully support the ban on politics in the blog. In fact, I believe I was one of the first to ask that it stop (I could be wrong). However, I did participate and that was probably a mistake. I'll now mention Reagan for balance and post
Posted by: giantsquid | November 05, 2008 at 01:44 PM
Mamba24,
I find todays Roll call Objectionable and a joke. You could fill a thimble with what you know about politics.
Why not stick to the Lakers?
Are you trying to make people angry? I wish you would shut your pie hole.
Posted by: Eric M. | November 05, 2008 at 01:45 PM
AK/BK
If I have to read his name, I find it painful for both myself and the county.
This is a basketball blog...yes?

That would be great! He thinks it is a great day, the other half of us think it is a time to mourn.
Posted by: Eric M. | November 05, 2008 at 01:50 PM
Eric M,
I can promise that BK and I are going to do our best to keep purely political comments from going live, but I can't promise that the name "Obama" will literally never appear again on this blog again. For that matter, I won't promise to forbid mention of our president's name under any circumstances, since that's pretty extreme and wholly unnecessary. If those parameters make this blog too emotionally volatile for you to participate, handle the situation however you see fit.
Also, if you want to discuss it further, email either of us at Kambrothers@yahoo.com.

When I hear rumors about a trade, I'll usually at least toss
something plausible into the trade machine to see if it can
work for both teams. Gasol to New York just plain can't.
Unless it's Gasol and Kobe for Zach Randolph, Eddy Curry,
and Jerome James.
Yeah. that's it. That must be the deal that Bizarro was
talking about.
