A little ear candy to help y'all kill time before the game against the Nuggets tonight.
Our buddy Eric Neel from ESPN.com drops by and we dissect all things supposedly "soft," whether
you're talking the Laker roster, Pau Gasol or Brian during his pickup
games at the rec. Plus, Kobe slips to #2 on an ESPN MVP "watch" list!
Oh, the humanity... and comically premature coverage!
Give it a listen and see what you think. And let BK know if you think he was "soft" or just unwilling to be a total moron at the gym.

I think tonight may be a "trap game". I just think the Lakers might come in to tonight's game all high and mighty because they spanked the Suns last night then get their butts handed to em. The Nuggets seem pretty good this year and actually gave us a fight earlier in the year.
Lucky for us, were unstoppable this year. We have way too many weapons for Denver to handle.

GREAT WIN LAST NIGHT. THE GAME TONIGHT AGAINST THE NUGGETS WILL BE A TEST. WE NEVER HAVE ANY TROUBLE BEATING THE NUGGETS WITH AI AND MELO. DO YOU THINK WE WILL HAVE TROUBLE BEATING THE NUGGETS WITH CHAUCEY AND MELO ?

What worries my about this game is that it appears Denver got rid of their achilles heal when the brought in Billips - beating themselves. Ever since the trade, KMart has been more about production than histrionics. Melo is trying harder on the defensive end. Role players like Kleiza and Smith play much more disciplined, controlled games. Denver may have become less "explosive" with the loss of AI, but in exchange, they're now much more "efficient".
All that being said, all the Lakers need to do is match that focus and effort and they should prevail. But I doubt it will be a cake walk.

Hey K Bros,
I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy the 710 Podcasts. I'm about to listen to this one. I always liked forum blue and cold etc. etc. but I like this one even better. I can't believe we have another game tonight I completely forgot.
Thanks for the great podcasts.

Pau weighs the same as fellow 7 footer Kevin Garnett. He's got the tools and talent. He has a ton of passion for the game & has been bringing it hard to the hole consistently this season. I don't think he's soft.

Wow.
Clippers traded Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas for Zach Randolph.
The upside: Tim "The Cancer" Thomas is gone.
The downside Cuttino "The Cat" Mobley is gone. I really like Cuttino Mobley. He played with class and poise and never gave up on his team, even through hard times. He will be missed.
I don't know enough about Zach Randolph, being an Eastern Conference player and a fricken Knick, but I like his numbers.

Need a new blog - Knicks trade Zach Randolph to the Clippers for
Cat Mobley and Tim Thomas. Not. Damn. Bad.
Cat leaving frees up minutes for the rookie, Eric Gordon. Randolph
is a legitimate 20 & 10 guy. Add in Camby for Defense, and Thornton
and Kaman for a little offense and a little defense, and it works out
pretty well.
OTOH, could this be a prelude to another deal? Camby +
Kaman + Randolph & none of them is capable of playing
small forward. Maybe there was some truth to those
Charlotte deal rumors...
Think about this potential lineup:
Baron Davis
Eric Gordon
Gerald Wallace
Zach Randolph
Marcus Camby
crazy, baby.

Friday night games make me nervous. Surely someone more attentive than I has compiled a historical list of wins by day of the week in the Jackson era?
I bet in the last ten years, the Lakers have done surprisingly poorly in home games on Fridays.
All this means: Let's keep up the focus guys! Friday's talking ^&%$ about the Golden Armor! It stops tonight.

Zach Randolph looks about as smart as a sack of rocks.
I keep forgetting that Mike Dunleavy was the Jailblazers coach. Urgh.

Wow, the Clips got Randoph. I gotta say - I'm even more confused by that Clipper team now than I was before. What kind of team are they? It's as if they're building a fantasy team rather than an actual basketball team. I don't think this changes much in Clipperland. They're still gonna suck.
Posted by: puddle | November 21, 2008 at 02:31 PM
Wow, this is a very busy day for the Knicks. Could they be trying any harder to clear cap space for Lebron? And all in one day, too.
I love all the early trades this season.

puddle,
"What kind of team are they? It's as if they're building a fantasy team rather than an actual basketball team."
In the Clippers defense, they're likely the best team on NBA Live 2009 now. haha

I haven't read any of the boards so maybe somebody has addressed this, but I was watching Bynum last night and one of the things is, he's overly concerned where Gasol or Odom is on offense. So instead of going directly to a spot, he's looking to see where Gasol or Odom is and that hesitation is killer in a game of anticipation. He needs to set his high pick, then roll down towards the basket and EXPECT the ball so defenders at least have to make a decision.
The other thing is, he's not setting a target with his hands when calling for the ball down low, he's just kinda standing there, not really asking for the ball. I assume the Lakers know this and figure he has enough on his plate right now and will get to it but changing those 2 little things could have a dramatic impact on what he does on offense.

Just watched Hamblen talking about tonight's match-up. He echoed what I talked about which was their offense is much more deliberate and with a purpose instead of being wasteful. Billups makes sure the freelancing gets cut to a minimum and the team keeps running the offense. The absence of the Birdman means that the Laker bigs really need to go at Denver and get those guys in foul trouble. Frank said their mismatch is KMart trying to guard Pau and that's what they'll look to exploit.
Seems the coaching staff has their eyes wide open on this one. Hopefully the team will bring the effort.

AK/BK,
I just read an excerpt of Mark Heisler's "Madmen's Ball" and it looks fascinating. I was wondering if either of you had gotten a chance to pick it up yet. I'm thinking I'm going to order a copy tonight.

re: Cat/Thomas trade for Randolph
Clips gave up a whole lotta offense for a baby-faced big. Randolph was pretty devastating two years ago for Portland but it'll be interesting to see how Dunleavy juggles Camby Kaman and Zach. That's a lot of size.
Posted by: lakers_sth | November 21, 2008 at 03:10 PM
Kwaminus Maximus Decimus Meridius Brownicus,
Yeah, I don't know what's up with Bynum.

LOL X. True statement.
Someone mentioned a Gerald Wallace-Chris Kaman trade and I think that makes sense for both squads, although I'd be concerned if I were Charlotte that they're losing their most athletic player on a woefully underathletic team. But they need to move Okafor to the 4 already, so the move makes sense. I'd be surprised if it didn't happen actually. Otherwise, this deal makes no sense for the Clippers.
Posted by: puddle | November 21, 2008 at 03:14 PM
OMG, Zach Randolph.
Well, whatever was left of the Clippers is gone.
They just bailed out the NYKs. First they give Cassel to our Eastern rivals when they KNOW we're vying for the title.... now they bail out the Knicks so they can position themselves for Bron Bron.
Holy Smokes.
Posted by: Tim-4-Show | November 21, 2008 at 03:15 PM
If hoopshype is correct, the only players on the Knicks payroll officially for 2010 are Eddy Curry and Jared Jefferies for about $18M. Obviously there are players they could exercise options on or extend into that season but that's the ledger sheet as it appears right now. Just shows you what a smart/aggressive GM can do And DAntoni is laying the foundation with all the young and inexpensive players.
Posted by: lakers_sth | November 21, 2008 at 03:19 PM
I suspect the Knicks' recent roster diarrhea will not end well for anyone in the Tri-State area. 2010, while the Lakers bask in the afterglow of a second consecutive parade, miserable NY fans will storm the Garden bearing torches and pitchforks.
And it shall be glorious...

I liked Cuttino a lot but I still kind of like this trade for the Clips - they're getting some heft with Randolph. The guy's a bonafide rebounder... currently scoring around 20 ppg and 12.5 boards.... we played against this guy a lot when he was with Portland.
Posted by: dave m | November 21, 2008 at 03:27 PM
I don't really know why the Clippers did this though. I get why the Warriors pulled their trade, but I can't think of a good reason why the Clippers would do this.

Mike T,
>>> If you're rude when I see you, don't add me as a Facebook friend!
If you look carefully, you'll see that's the name of a group one of my friends concocted and I signed up. I'll admit it may seem snotty, but it's really nothing to get too hung up over. It is very common to get friend requests from people one's never heard of. I get them every day. By and large, my Facebook and MySpace page friends are just that -- really my friends. And since the group name doesn't apply to them, they don't care.
All the same, thanks for visiting my page.

I just looked at the numbers and it looks like the Clips will have a bunch of cap space for 2010.
Which is good for them. But when was the last time a big-time free agent signed with the Clips?

Yet another article on what's wrong with the Suns.
Don't feel sorry for them, though. Doing that has a way of coming back to haunt ye.
http://tinyurl.com/68yrgy
I don't know much about the run & gun vs. half-court offense debate, but IF I were Kerr I'd try to accomodate Nash. He looks like his friends took their ball and went home. In other words, lost on an island.
The present day Lakers and the Suns of 2-3 years ago would kill if they committed to defense.
Let's hope our Lakers figure it out before the Suns figure out that they need to pick up the pace. Because they can't outscore high-octane teams on a consistent basis.

I was thinking the same thing as I was on hoopshype.com. Donnie Walsh has done a remarkable job of clearing the crap and freeing themselves for 2010. They'll have enough cap space to throw money at TWO superstars. The only 4 players likely to be around in 2010:
1) Eddy Curry (they're dying to trade him but I can't imagine anyone biting)
2) Jared Jeffries (see above)
3) Wilson Chandler (he's turning out to be a bargain)
4) Danilo Gallinari (usually rooks are given the team option)
These 4 contracts add up to $23.5 million, leaving them what will probably be about $40 mil under the cap. At that rate, they could sign LeBron and a second star for a combined $35 million or so and still have enough money for some filler guys who want to play with Bron Bron and his new sidekick. If they can't trade Jeffries, they'll probably try to trade Gallinari because of the glut at the SF position, plus, they might resign the surprisingly effective Nate Robinson (which would allow them to go over the cap if they sign the free agents first). And, of course, it's NY so they could actually go over the cap and just not care about paying the luxury tax. All in all, for the first time in years, the Knicks have a light at the end of the tunnel and it's arriving more quickly than anticipated. I'm actually kind of excited because NBA basketball is better when the Knicks are good.
Posted by: puddle | November 21, 2008 at 03:47 PM
Xodus - did you just use the word "defense" in a sentence discussing something related to Zach Randolph? While your usage was technically correct, it just seem...wrong somehow.
I guess we'll have to see how the Clippers turn out...Applying logic here is getting me nowhere. I'm much more worried about Denver right now. They have much more focus and we need to bring our A game on both sides of the ball.
GO LAKERS!

So dissapointed with the play of Andrew Bynum in recent games. With the way he's playing he should be called Andrew Jones of the Dodgers. If an old, "has been" center named Shaq outplayed him and a "bust" center named Kwame outshines him, how will Bynum fare with the all star caliber centers like Howard, Yao, Duncan, and Bosh? Did the Lakers management made the right contract for this unproven center? Just asking....

Folks-
Being civil to each other doesn't need to be done by "blog mandate," where people make grand proclamations to do so. Just BE CIVIL to each other. If someone else isn't, well, don't be that guy. Why? It's a blog, and your man/womanhood isn't at stake. If someone isn't a "good citizen," feel free not to engage them in debate.

Zach Randolph replaces the Brand they lost.
20.5 pts and 12.5 are very impressive.
Kaman and Camby make for a very good backline defense.
BD pushing the ball, penetrating, and now dishing to an outside big will help his assist numbers.
Randolph can also create his own shots as we learned from Portland.
Good move for the Clips, not that I care. Maybe one more move coming with Kaman, but if not I think their twin tower formula could still work nicely.

The other trade thats in the works...Harrington for Crawford...That makes the Warriors even smaller....It also means that David Lee at some point may be on the block...I like him as a power forward...As for Zack Randolph....He plays as much defense as my door bell.....And he is just as bad as Thomas for team harmony ..........
Posted by: Thirty2 | November 21, 2008 at 04:10 PM
Fatty,
They can't play all 3 of those guys at once, though. Who are they going to bring off the bench? Is that guy going to be happy about coming off the bench? The Clips are already a team with chemistry problem and B-Diddy has been chucking like crazy so far this season and they added another chucker.
You never know if it's going to work, but I don't like their chances.

"I just looked at the numbers and it looks like the Clips will have a bunch of cap space for 2010. Which is good for them. But when was the last time a big-time free agent signed with the Clips?"
They'll have some, but they eliminated a fair chunk of it when they took on Randolph. Maybe they figure with so many teams vying for dudes, the odds of them landing a big fish aren't huge, so they might as well grab a 20/10 guy (albeit one with question marks)
Oh, by the way. The last time was four months ago with Baron Davis (not to be a smart ass, haha)

Their front court is below pitiful, though. Add Kaman to Okafor
and now maybe you've got at least a starting place. And they've
still got Jason Richardson on the wing. Ray Felton and DJ Augustin
are at least competent at PG. And Adam Morrison and Matt Carroll
have shown some shooting talent. Throw in a couple of no-namers
who will do whatever Larry Brown tells them, and maybe you have
a playoff team.

I wouldn't worry about it too much yet. Check this out...
Bynum averages, Nov. 2007
26.3 MPG
11.4 PPG
10.7 RPG
1.3 APG
1.5 BPG
.593 FG
.685 FT
Bynum Averages Nov. 2008
29.5 MPG
10.9 PPG
9.4 RPG
1.9 APG
2.8 BPG
.478 FG
.742 FT
Bynum is still rounding into form and getting used to Gasol, and yet his averages aren't too far off what he was doing this time last year.
It's too early to panic. He's just got to learn to take better shots (I think he's trying too hard to prove he's expanded his arsenal) and just be aggressive going to the rim.

Tim-4-Show
I do remember that and also remember, us debating did he take one in a game?
This was another site, and we voted on a poll.
The results? A tie with Fatty voting he didn't. His shot was more like a half jump hook, not pure Kareem at all.
The guy plays better I think from the left side. Last night, he got pushed way outside on the right and didn't look comfortable from the right at all.
I didn't realize how subjective a sky hook could be. I mean you do it or you don't. But you know some of us basketball purists from the pld school ways have there rules, like what the MVP has to be as well. lol

>>>I don't really know why the Clippers did this though. I
>>>get why the Warriors pulled their trade, but I can't think

Uhh.
For starters, Tim Thomas is a big turd with no value whatsoever.
Second, while Marcus Camby & Chris Kaman are both pretty good,
neither of them is anywhere near 20 & 10. The Clippers are the
4th lowest scoring team in the league, and one of the worst
rebounding teams as well. Randolph will help with both of those
problems. Baron Davis zipping a pass to Marcus Camby might get
you nothing. The same pass to Randolph will get you points
more often than not.
It hurts to lose Cat Mobley, but Third: it throws the rookie into
the deep water with the bigs. Eric Gordon, welcome to the starting
lineup.
And fourth...
The Clippers are STILL in the 2010 Free Agent market.
Summer of 2010 leaves the Clippers with Zach Randolph,
Baron Davis, Eric Gordon, Al Thornton, and a bunch of cap space.
Or maybe before then they trade Camby off for a couple of
quality younger players and rebuild around Davis-Kaman-Randolph
even sooner.

LTLF -
I agree with you. That's why I said that I think it makes sense. I was just stating that that would be my only concern if I were the Bobcats. If I were them, however, I would still do it and if I were the Clippers, I would DEFINITELY do it. Their salaries are identical so I think it'd be a great trade for both sides. I'd like to see it happen.
Posted by: puddle | November 21, 2008 at 04:49 PM
LTLF,
I already wrote that the Clips would have cap space in 2010.
So you get rid of a turd in Tim Thomas and bring in another career loser in Randolph? Sure they'll score more and look better when they lose, but they'll still lose.
Diddy is chucking like crazy this season and they just added another unefficient chucker in Randolph.
Diddy's signing slipped my mind as a recent signing, but he did sign only after the Warriors refused to give him the deal he wanted because of age and injury history. Not exactly the type of signing they're hoping to make in 2010.
