Lakers vs. Houston: A preview podcast with ClutchFans.net

Lamar_odom_hou_2 The Rockets, with their formidable Big Three (T-Mac, Yao, Ron-Ron), and Fort Knox D, represent a legitimate threat in the Western Conference, and LA's best test of the early season.  That said, despite a 4-2 start things haven't really coalesced in the early going for Houston, especially on the offensive end, as the motion, read-and-react offense favored by Rick Adelman hasn't been operating at peak efficiency.

Getting Shane Battier back from injury will help- don't think that's happening tonight- but for the time being, the Rockets are working through the kinks.  Still, they'll provide a great early test.  To get a better handle on Houston, I spoke yesterday with Dave Hardisty, host of ClutchFans, one of the longest running independent hoops websites around, old school and rock solid like the Sugarhill Gang

We covered Ron Artest's acclimation to life in Texas, what the Rockets want to do offensively, and how Houston's lack of length could hurt them tonight, among other things.  Use it as a primer for tonight's action.

Mamba & Utzworld,

What no prayer? No roll call?

I'm having withdrawls.

Lakers Today... Lakers Tomorrow... Lakers Forever.

GO LAKERS!

i would like to see how LO plays today.. with all the trade speculation in the summer about swapping him for artest.. and i think he ll see a lot of mins today bcoz i dont think vlad rad will be effective against T-Mac.. so i hope LO plays better than artest!!

GO LAKERS!!

LAKER GURU

Clippers are up at half.

It seems the lack of Tim Thomas is helping.

Go Clippers!

GO LAKERS!

Rockets will employ a man to man defense. Rick's teams in both Sacramento, Portland, and so far in Houston has employed man to man defense. He had Clyde Drexler in Portland, Doug Christie in Sacremento, and now Shane Battier and Ron Artest in Houston as perimeter defenders. If we can execute our offense this team more efficiently and keep up our defense (force Artest and primarily McGrady to shoot long 3 point shots, zone defense will help with this) then we should beat Houston with no problem.

Hey Laker Nation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's Game Day .......Finally!

That was way too long to wait for a Laker game... at least tonight we will actually watch what should be a game. I still call Lakers by 15 tonight.

Bynum is going to bring his A-game against Yao... I see a carreer high tonight.

All we need to do is keep our defense... I really am impressed with how we have been running up and down the court.. defending.

Only 5 more hours!

Its time to drink a beer and watch the Lakers, get the whiskey out for the good old game and jump and cheer and root for the only team that can do it this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LAKERS!!!!!!!
PURPLE AND GOLD!!!!!!!!!!

ROAD TO THE RING HAS BEGUN!!!!!!!
82-0

Simi Laker Girl

Top 4 teams in the WC:

LA Lakers

New Orleans Hornets

Houston Rockets

Utah Jazz

Teams that were supposed to be good but is hanging between "good" and "bad"

Dallas Mavericks

Phoenix Suns

Denver Nuggets

San Antonio Spurs (when they are all healthy they are good but that is when they are healthy, not when 2/3 of their big 3 is injured)

Portland Trailblazers

Wwwwwuhoh!

NY beat Utah! I wouldn't say they are "good" just yet but they certainly aren't the pushovers they used to be...

If they pick up a few more pieces then you would have to make them the front runner in the Lebron sweepstakes. It just seems to me that if you had the choice between NY or New Jersey, it would be NY hands down. It's like choosing between the Lakers or the Clippers, you would pick the Lakers hands down.

I hope that bynum can have have a more consistent game tonight. I don't really care if he only has 4 point if it on 2 for 2 or 1 for 1 and two freebies as long as he is also getting blocks and rebounds. I just think that he as to get his percentage up, which would mean hes taking shots which have good looks..

Clippers finally pulled one out against Mark Cuban's hated Mavericks. Good. I was getting tired waiting for this team to gel.

Number one reason for the victory? Tim Thomas was hurt. That guy is a rock tied to the neck of that franchise. Ship him out for a bag of Cheetos as far as I'm concerned.

Now that the Clippers have won, the Lakers are going to have earn a win tonight. What? You think they're going to allow the Clippers to get a win, but not get one themselves?

No way.

Go Clippers!

GO LAKERS!

What channel is this on? Is it only like KCAL 9 or FSN West? Mann I hope the local bar has NBA Leage Pass because I live in Texas and I'm not sure they be showing it. Might have to watch it online, which would suck.

K-bros -

Nice podcast. One thing has me scratching my head though... no mention of Von Wafer? Is the man/the myth still on the Rockets roster? If so, would this not be the time for unleash the dauntless bomber... on the team that cast him out?

mamba 24, i've been a blog reader since 2005. It's just recently i decided to join the discussion. Will u please include me in your roll call?

Edwin,

>>>>>The Lakers swarming defense will be tested tomorrow.

Nice job as usual, Edwin. I really liked your use of “swarming” to describe the Lakers new defense. The Swarm. LOL. Would also be a good name for the second unit. Further, the Swarm was a 1978 movie about killer bees, like in Bryant, Bynum, and Mbenga.

>>>>>What is my Lakers wish? I wish Walton will be playing in the last minutes of 4th Q,
>>>>>it means game is in the refrigerator. If Luke plays more than 20 minutes, it means
>>>>>Lakers are in great trouble. LOL!

Great suggestion. Luke entering the game could become the Lakers’ version of Red Auerbach lighting up his victory cigar. What a pompous ahole that guy was. Luke as our victory cigar! I love it. They could play some of his old man’s Grateful Dead when he enters the game and the Staples audience could do the wave. LOL.

I would like to see the Lakers announcers honor Chick by declaring victory by reciting Chick’s famous refrigerator pronouncement. It should be a Lakers’ tradition. We may never have another Chick but that does not mean we can’t still continue to enjoy the original in all of his glory, especially in a season that I am sure would have been Chicks’ favorite of all time. I wonder if Andrew Bynum has ever heard Chick call a game.

Of course, all of this is only my not so humble opinion. JMNSHO. LOL.

Tom

Trudell from lakers.com chatted with Jason Friedman from rockets.com and one thing they discussed that stuck out to me was Jason talking about T-Mac's poor defense. He said that basically whoever T-Mac is guarding has a big night. Tonight, that guy is Vlad b/c Artest will more than likely be on Kobe.

I said it on the previous thread - I think the big opportunity tonight is Gasol on Scola. And when Houston players help, Pau's teammates need to be in the right places ready to make them pay.

ex,

>>>>>As big a factor is the time it takes getting a team to the title;
>>>>>this was a very young team last year, which had MAJOR personnel
>>>>>changes in the middle of the season. There is a limited amount of time
>>>>>available for a coaching staff, in particular when working with a
>>>>>young team. They are now getting to build on what was an
>>>>>amazing job last season.

Well said, ex. No way a team could implement a radical defensive change like we have done this year in the middle of the season. We have often talked about how you need to view Phil’s job as a coach through a telescope rather than a microscope. Well, to really see the job he is doing, you need to look at him through a telescope of years. He is the ultimate championship team builder as a coach and is proving it to everybody right now.

Tom

Jon,

>>>>>I think I've figured out Famar's nickname. THE ZOHAN!

LMAO. I love it, Jon. It is absolutely perfect. Mamba needs to start a Jordan Farmar as Zohan Bandwagon. LOL. You don’t mess with the Zohan.

Tom

like Sasha said last year:

"When we play as a group and shot fall we can win anybody"

The read-and-react offense was a thing of beauty to watch when the Kings were running it. Vlade and C-Webb were probably the best passing big men in the league. Houston doesn't seem to have that level of passing skills from the high post.

On a side note, I think the Lakers should hire Gus Johnson as their announcer. I was watching the Chargers game today, and was pleasantly surprised to find that Gus was the announcer. The guy can make every play sound exciting.

well? it's almost 5:00, I guess I'll say a prayer my post appears before the game starts? I don't even remember what I said... LOL!

A STATISTICAL LOOK AT THE LAKERS, GOING BEYOND TRADITIONAL NUMBERS
by Brett Pollakoff for nbclosangeles.com

http://tinyurl.com/6py5xe

Excellent article about Lakers shooting woes and tonight’s game against the Rockets. Here are some excerpts:

>>>>>

In today's L.A. Times, it's pointed out that the Lakers might be undefeated, but (uh-oh!) they're not shooting the ball particularly well. And on the surface, that might be true. As a team, the Lakers are shooting just 43.5% from the field, good enough to be ranked merely 21st in a league of 30 teams. But most observers see this Lakers' team as playing extremely solid team basketball through their first four games, so where's the disconnect? There are other statistical categories besides the basics which give us a clearer look at what's going on.

While the Lakers' team field goal percentage is low, they lead the league in points scored per game, averaging over 105 per contest. So is their shooting really just 21st in the league? Not if you account for three-pointers and free throws, which a metric known as True Shooting Percentage (TS) includes in the equation. And as you might expect, when you look at all types of shots taken (not just combined field goals), the Lakers' number improves quite a bit. Their TS% is actually 53.9, good enough for 11th in the league.

>>>>>

The Houston Rockets come to town with a record of 4-2, but they've struggled recently. After beginning the season 3-0, they dropped consecutive games before beating the Clippers the other night at Staples Center. The team's offseason addition of Ron Artest should make things interesting. With Artest around to guard Kobe Bryant and Yao Ming defending the middle, Houston appears to match up well defensively. But the Lakers are no slouches on defense themselves, and Tracy McGrady doesn't appear to be right, having scored just two points in 26 minutes against the Clippers. The Lakers come into this one well-rested, as it's just their second game in the last eight days. But last season, the Lakers did drop two out of three meetings to the Rockets, so this should be a good early season test for them.

Hey Laker Nation!!!!!!

1 hour to game time - FINALLY!!!!! This has been a crazy long wait - I hope what the team worked on pays off tonight in a great big fat W!

Too much talk about Yao - the great wall of China. I think AB's going to be pumped for this game. All I want him to do is push him away from the hole, block some shots & get some rebounds. But Socks has passion so maybe we'll see a lot more than that - here's hoping!

That said, any takers on my wager that the game will not end without Trevor giving Yao a facial?

GO LAKERS!

I'm on board and super excited to see our team face perhaps the best squad in the league.

We're usually rusty after long layoffs... so hopefully we'll see a crisp team.

No Shane Battier means Kobe can score (LOL) tonight.

There is only one announcer who would be a worthy successor to Chick, and that is the former Sonic broadcaster
Kevin Calabro, absolutely the best
"Flying Chickens in the Barnyard"

Tim 4 Show,

There's still Ron Artest LOL! And Artest is a way better defender than Battier.

-blitz

Happy game day Lakernation!
Hope you're all enjoying your Sunday as I struggle through my Monday in sunny Sydney...
Looking forward to the Rockets, hopefully we've spent some time on free throws in the last few days!
Go Lakers!
Anna

hey guys anyone got any links for tonights game? i took a shift at work before i realized what tonight was =[

Great quote from Kareem in the pre-game show, talking about how the Lakers need to have heart and determination to win a championship this year:

"They've got to go out there & do it. It's time to come off the court bleeding. If you want that victory, you've got to be willing to do that".

Classic.

Laker Tom - I agree on your comment about how Lakers should continue Chick's tradition of calling the game when it's in the 'fridge. Maybe they could use a recording of Chick's voice doing it. That way a true Laker tradition isn't lost, and the next generation will know Chick too.

I'm really tired of Stu calling it O-V-E-R. That's just lame.

THIS IS TIMELESS... THIS IS JUST PURE HEART.... PURE PURE HEART...

Justanothermambafan,

That's not the worst of it. At least with Chick you always knew he was a Laker through and through. He can be critical but respectful. Stu? He's just plain sarcastic a lot of the time, often BEFORE the play actually happens. It's like he wants us to lose.

Between him and Joel, Chick is truly missed.

Faith - yah, unfortunately for Laker Nation it seems like we'll be stuck with them for awhile. Stu is one of those guys that always has to one-up you. In the words of Jon K - urgh. I would rather have Billy Mac back - or even Paul Sunderland - over Joel. Too bad Stu is a fixture...

is there a link of the game somewhere?

The lakers are rusty... too slow to the ball...

this should be corrected before the 2nd quarter is over...

Go lakers...

Why are people speaking of DEAD persons... just concentrate on the game at hand...

note: I'm a Rockets Fan.

I'd just like to say, I'm excited for the Rox/Lakers game. You guys will be a great test for us. The Rockets, while losing to Celtics and POrotland, put up a great fight, and Houston's 2 losses could have easily been wins.

This game against the lakers will be very tough. You guys have a very strong team, and I expect an incredibly close match. Ron guarding Kobe will be a great match up,

Dakeem,

I'm glad that the Lakers were such a great test for the Rockets...LOL!

Ken

Great idea but to improve on a good idea is try another suggestion.

How about an original Chick refridgerator call recorded
and played back (blasted from sound system) at the right time.
