Feeling Bullish?
Since purple and gold fanship often runs higher on enthusiasm than perspective, another 24 hours without a Day-twah loss redemption opportunity might have driven the Laker Nation to unpleasant actions. Thus, tonight's hootenanny against the Bulls serves as much public health service as "sports entertainment." Not to mention a chance to make up for the Pistons loss by improving upon certain specifics that caused it. Allen Iverson ran amok and unfettered last Friday, and it'll be up to Derek Fisher (and sometimes Jordan Farmar) to remain as aware of Derrick Rose's whereabouts as he is the atrocities in Darfur. And while MJ's former club may not meet the standards of his salad days, they exhibit enough rough and tumble to meet Kobe's definition.
OTHER NEWS
- undefined may remember certain elements of the threepeat era differently than Phil and Kobe.
- Mark Cuban may be the only NBA owner accused of insider trading (just what the league needed on the heels of Tim Donaghy, right?), but he's hardly the only one in need of a reality check.
- Does the Knicks' improved start justify the treatment of Starbury? Mercifully for all parties, a buyout may be in the cards.
- Jax extended in the Bay Area. Stack wants to be dealt outta Big D, which may work out fine, since the team could be in deck shuffling mode.
- Because what would the day be without yet another "LBJ in New York?" article?

lol @ everyone jumping onto the "sky is falling" bandwagon. i'll be at fathers office watchin the game. see you there

another thing, it sure may look like a bad omen to lose to a good team, but if you ask me i'd rather lose to a good team and give the lakers a reality check rather than lose to a bad team and have them get out thinking "eh we shoulda won, we just got lazy"
thanks.

POETIC YOU SAY
This is so poetic the first game after the streak hit the fan
To play against the team where the legend of 9Rings began
The team who once had the so called Greatest player of all
And also won the most games in a season y’all
The once mighty Chicago Bulls have come to Staples to play
So where is the poetry in all of this you may say
The Bulls Fools that they are tried to run 9Rings away
But thanks to the Force he is even greater today
He coached the so called greatest, Jordan was his name
Now he coaches the successor of the GOAT fame
You say come on Mamba do you really think they can win 73
I say yes just like another Laker team had a streak of 33.
Well maybe this possibly could come true you say.
But as God is a my witness they’ll never be another MJ
I say sorry my friend we have to disagree there.
For the past few seasons you’ve been looking at MJ’s heir
Yeah I’m talking about Kobe, now what’s your beef
Kobe even went to the Olympics and won the laurel leaf.
The Mamba even did one thing that MJ has never done
Yes in one game the mighty Mamba scored 81.
So enough with the Poetry just put the Bulls to sleep
Crush them, destroy them, make their players weep.
You got to be cold if the championship you seek
This game is for the strong and not for the weak
You have a tradition and legacy to uphold
So go out and dominate, be brave, be bold.
And at the end of your career you just might fine
You played for the greatest Laker team of all time
ROLL CALL

From what I have read, what Cuban did was only "borderline illegal," and he would have a reasonable chance were he to fight it. Where it will potentially affect him quite a bit, though, is in his attempts to purchase the Chicago Cubs. The other owners may be hesitant to let him buy the team with this type of issue hanging over him.

GAME DAY...YIPPEEEE!!!!!!
Time to ditch the loss and hop back on the hoss.
That's mid-western for horse.
Speaking of which, I know we as a blog have been flailing the "Soft" horse for awhile now, we are tired of hearing that our team is willowly, soft, lacks toughness or what-have-you. We know they aren't soft. Watching the end of the Clippers game last night, now there is a soft team. Or a lost team. No defense, when one guy makes a shot, he turns away from his team and is happy for himself (Cutino Mobley), and they don't play to anybodies strengths. they play Mike Dunleavey's crazy system. You know, that system that won him so many rings in Milwaukee, Portland and Los Angeles...both times. You guys remember the Dunleavy Dynasty years, right?
Waitaminute...there were no Dunleavey Dynasty years! he bailed after Magic got sick, stunk it up in milwaukee, Portland and now with the Clippers after silently kicking an NBA legend to the curb.
I also don't believe that Elton Brand's defection came out of nowhere, as Ralph "Bingo!" Lawler exclaimed over the air last night. Speaking of Clipper announcers, I know old Ralphie has been a Clippers announcer for some time, but he drives me NUTS! Whoever the color guy is should just stop talking. It's one thing to be a homer, but their ceaseless optimisim in the face of drudgery is just too much sometimes.\
Give me Joel Myers and Stu Lantz any day of the week over those two clowns.
Looking forward to a ressurection of our championship caliber defense tonight. Looking forward to some good shotting tonight. Want to see Luke get some minutes over Vlad? Me too! But it probably won't happen tonight.
Or will it?
Posted by: Jamie Sweet | November 18, 2008 at 09:29 AM
Look out for Rose, he is something else. He might be the closest thing we have to MJ.
And Del Negro has been doing a much better job than anticipated.
Posted by: BUTLER | November 18, 2008 at 09:33 AM
Ex,
It didn't look like they were going to let Cuban buy the Cubs anyway. And it certainly isn't fair.
Posted by: Xodus | November 18, 2008 at 09:33 AM
Tim-4-Show here, checking in for tonight's game.
The Lakers must atone for their sins. I want to see a catharsis tonight.
Regarding Mark Cuban... I've only read up a little on this, but it seems to me a bit unfair to him that he should hold equities that he knows aren't worth their current trading price. Some of the insider trader stuff that gets thrown around is a bit unfair in my estimation... but I can't speak to this situation in particular.
Besides, he's got plenty of money. I'm more concerned with the Lakers holding the Bulls to under 86pts and scoring more than 110... that would make me feel better.

GAME ON! LET US PRAY:
Dear Lord,
Open the eyes of the blind, unplug the ears of the doubtful, soften the hearts of the fearful that they may come to themselves and realize:
IT WAS JUST ONE GAME!
Yesterday, we bickered. We fought. We lost our way.
But now, we rejoice. We stand united. We walk in hope. For TODAY, IS A NEW DAY. A NEW GAME. A NEW STREAK.
One game does not define a season. One setback does not equal absolute failure. In Your eyes, a SETBACK is a SETUP for a COMEBACK!
For that, we offer You praise...
AMEN!

I just hope the lakers win today and silence the naysayers ...we are the best team in the league right now..and i dont buy into the whole we cant beat the strong EC teams bcoz i have watched most of the matches and the celts look vulnerable , the pistons are not good at all, sheed just got hot against us and they almost always win if sheed plays good , only the cavs look good for me and thats bcoz of lebron now, he is playing out of his mind now!! i dont know any1 who can stop him now.. the only reason i dont get about him is, he is so good at getting to the rim but why does he want to throw bricks from the perimeter everytime??!!

Finally another game. I was getting tired of all this nonesense over ONE loss in NOVEMBER.
Go Lakers
Posted by: TrueLakerFan | November 18, 2008 at 09:42 AM
The Cuban thing is really a non-issue here. The man didn't become a billionaire by doing all things "by the book". The bottom line is he had a leg up on the other investors and jumped before he could lose $700k. The SEC is only looking to penalize him financially so he'll most likely be ponying up the $700k he would've lost plus an additional penalty and a slap on the hand so he won't do it again. A couple million bucks is like chump change to a man worth over $2 billion. He'll be fine.
Now back to the real news...it's gameday people. Let's rip the horns out of the bulls tonight. I say we come back angry that we dropped teh ball last Friday and seriously handle our business out there. Fisher and Farmar MUST keep Rose in check although I have a feeling KB24 may want to take on that challenge during a few plays to send a message...preferably "NOT IN MY HOUSE, Mr. Rose".
On another note, we just lost another "contender" (according to pundits) in the West. T-Mac's knee went out on him at last night's game and it looks like he may finally call it quits. Now is anyone surprised? Not really. What's really crazy is that Artest and Yao also sprained their ankles in the same game. Those two probably won't miss too much, if any, time but wasn't the T-Mac injury expected? Isn't it always? I never truly considered them a threat even with the acq of Artest becausethey're so prone to injury. Here goes another 1st round exit.
Anyway, looking firward to a great PHYSICAL and STRONG game from our crew tonight. GO LAKERS! 8-1 BABY!

BUTLER,
"Look out for Rose, he is something else. He might be the closest thing we have to MJ."
How is he like MJ at all. The only thing they have in common is that they're black NBA guards.
I see Rose as a Tony ParkerV. 2.0. He's bigger, stronger and just as fast. But with a better jumper than the young Tony. I do agree that Rose is a stud.

The case against Cuban is weak. But I said the same about Martha Stewart and she saw time for being dishonest about a crime she didn't even commit.
A prosecutor, trying to make a name for themselves, could get lucky with a jury, wanting revenge for all these greedy board members.
Remember its Texas, and 'you don't mess with Texas'.
Possible sentence: Life in prison, being forced to watch replays of the Dallas loss against Golden State in the playoffs 24/7 and on Sundays, Kobe 62 pt performance..........oh wait, that Mark's ironic hell sentence.

Keys To Victory
Bynum and Pau need to dominate the boards and keep playing great help D.
Fish needs to shoot over 45%.
Kobe needs to be a facilitator in the early going.
If Vlad is going to play, he needs to PLAY! Don't just stand out at the 3 point line and expect the ball to float your way. Get some rebounds, set a screen or two, cut, cut, cut!
Ariza and Lamar just need to keep bringing it. Who would have thought that the most consistent Lakers would be Ariza and Odom. They have made big differences in every game this year. they need to keep on keepin' on.
Farmar has gone back to trying to do too much on offense and not enough on defence. This is no good. We don't need him to score a bunch of points, he's not going to take over Fish's starting job this year, so he might as well play steady and stay IN FRONT of his man. He and Fish will be tested tonight against a potential ROY and they should welcome him to the NBA with some sturdy, gritty defence.
Free Throws, get to the stripe and make 'em. Diving to the rack is a good way to get there, eh, team?
GO LAKERS!!!!!

Xodus -
"How is he like MJ at all. The only thing they have in common is that they're black NBA guards."
You mean other than he's a Bull taking over a team marked by years of mediocrity, and he possesses the overall scoring abilities that makes coaches drool?
Actually, you're right, I was just trying to offer a small jab because kobey always gets the comparison.
The TP comparison is close, but Rose can dunk like Dominique - he is athletic - and he is playing way beyond his rookie status.
If the Bulls can get their hands on a decent center, they will have all the tools to be a power team.
Posted by: BUTLER | November 18, 2008 at 10:07 AM
BUTLER,
Rose is pretty darn athletic, but I wouldn't say he dunks like 'Nique.
Rose is a better player than I envisioned him being in the early going. This is one of my problems with college hoops. Coaches are so obsessed by running their systems that they don't take full advantage of their studs. Rose ended last season strong for Memphis, but I think Calipari should have opened up the floor more for him and attack the opposing PGs.
Posted by: Xodus | November 18, 2008 at 10:14 AM
Umm, I'm pretty sure Rose is a PG and Jordan is a SG. And lets see....Jordan is arguably the GOAT while Rose is a very unproven rookie.
I'm going to say that Rose is more like Smush Parker right now then he is like MJ.
Lamar = 6th man of the year
GO LAKERS

Fatty,
"Possible sentence: Life in prison, being forced to watch replays of the Dallas loss against Golden State in the playoffs 24/7 and on Sundays, Kobe 62 pt performance"
It could be worse; he could have to watch Mamba24 in a thong.

Jesus Christ, I can't slip up and write the S word but you certainly can let the B word and any other swear up in here from everyone else. I'm good though, no worries.
GO LAKERS! Have a great season. I'll be watching. Much love everybody...keep the Laker love going. I'm out.
Posted by: EastCoastJessie | November 18, 2008 at 10:24 AM
I predict the Lakers to lose. Yeah that's right I said it. I didn't say it last game and look what happened.
Posted by: never | November 18, 2008 at 10:27 AM
Xodus - I don't much pay attention to college hoops, so I'm lost there. But I'll ask you again tomorrow about the Wilkins comparison..maybe a bit of hype, but Rose is a sky walker no doubt.
MrBarney -
"I'm going to say that Rose is more like Smush Parker right now then he is like MJ."
Didn't I rean Smushy is in the D-league now? Jeez, at least Kwame is improving..

GO LAKERS!
Posted by: Jon K. | November 18, 2008 at 10:39 AM
I posted my breakdown of the Bulls yesterday. Since there's so much Rose talk today, what I would offer is this: The only reason why Rose is posting the numbers he is, is b/c Del Negro has the offense running through him. I've watched enough Bulls games this year to know that Rose's weakness is his decision-making the same way it plagues Farmar. The Lakers can either try and frustrate Rose into trying to do too much/force the issue or they can bait him into making bad decisions and taking ill-advised shots. He'll assuredly make some spectacular plays but he will also predictably be the cause of just as many poor offensive possessions to counteract them.
Posted by: lakers_sth | November 18, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Fatty,
According to Mark Cuban, he is being used as a scapegoat of SEC honcho Cox who is also under pressure to stop the inside trading at Wall Street. Well, this case has been going on since 2004 and it's only now it gets into the news so Cuban has a point there maybe it is also a sort of trial by publicity of prosecuting high profiled individuals. However, to be fair to Cuban, other big names in the inside trading business should be prosecuted and should serve jail sentences just like any Mrs. Stewart, white collar criminals of Enron, WCI and these CEO's who benefitted from this economic meltdown. Unfortunately, it still money talks and b/s walks, they can afford lawyers to keep on appealing every bit of motions until it written off over time.
Well, Mark Cuban has energized the NBA and rescued the Mavericks organizations from going under. He is a very involved owner on details and keep on tinkering the systems like a typical IT guy with an inside trader attitude. He gets into second guessing his coaches, players, expel bloggers from his turf and expect immediate return from his investments. As of today, he is now eyeing again on Gerald Wallace and trade Stackhouse. Here is a good betting odds, which will happen first, Cuban going to jail or Dallas Mavericks wins the NBA championship?

Chick lil sez:
"He's either not going to be effective in a big guy based system or he'll be effective in a small-ball system that will never win anything. But he's not enough to dominate a game anymore."
That's quite a claim. It's early in the season so I can't buy that just yet.
...
I think it will work, and with time it will definitely improve. Nash can accept a limited role if it means gaining an overall advantage. He's not the AI type where he will not be happy if he's not the center of the O.
Posted by: BUTLER | November 18, 2008 at 09:46 AM
It is early in the season, so that's the caveat for all or us. While I agree Nash is a great player, my own personal feeling is that his talents are wasted when the players "orbiting" him are much less mobile than the 2004-2006 Suns or his Dallas teams. He thrives on movement and the proficient shooting/athleticism of his teammates to make his passing count. Suns 2008-2009 has moved further away from that. Joe Johnson, Shawn Marion, etc have been replaced with Raja, Hill, and Barnes.
Shaq is such a presence that its difficult for Nash to work around, or to be as fluid. The only way I see it working is if the Suns go with a 2-team system like the Lakers have. Nash style ball and Shaq style ball, i.e., speed and motion vs. dominant low-post presence. I think the Detroit game made that pretty apparent.
I don't disagree that there is enough talent and veteran leadership there to get them through this. It maybe more that the Western Conference is a competitive field, even when you stick guys like Nash, Amare, and Shaq together.

With regards to Fisher comments on Darfur, it is just a voice in the wilderness. I believe they can never stop atrocities there by aiding the victims. The abusers or murderers are at large. Evil triumphs when good men do nothing. Now if the NBA multi-millionaires donate a portion of their salaries and come up with 100M budget to raise an army of mercenaries in a clandestine approach netralizing the Sudan's army committing the genocide, then problems can be solved immediately. People of Darfur should have a place to live in peace and a powerful army that can protect them from marauding neighbors. If our oppulent NBA players do only the talking and wishing the problem would go away using their voice as popular basketball icon, that is just a wishful thinking..
Posted by: Edwin Gueco | November 18, 2008 at 11:16 AM
I think Xodus's Rose/Parker comparison is pretty accurate. Rose is certainly built more sturdily but most of the other qualities are there: quick as lightning, great finisher, average distributer, average outside shot.
I think Rose should eventually end up taking more free-throws by seeking contact with that thick frame of his and that he'll be a much better rebounder and 3pt shooter than Parker, but right now he's lacking that little floater and the midrange game that Parker has and isn't as creative around the rim. But he's only 20 and I'm guessing he'll develop these things in time.
It's easy to forget that Parker is still only 26 himself. He won't hit his prime for another 2-3 years!

This issue on Shaq that he is open to another LA combeack, well he wants to make peace with Dr. Buss and the Laker fans. It is for posterity reasons, the jersey on the wall of legends and without peace, no way he will get such recognition. In the hiearchy of wants, sometimes one's legacy will matter most b/c this will last for generations in the history of the Lakers. At present, there is always a footnote after Shaq's name as the engineer of the three consecutive Chamionships. Will he ever remove that footnote? Maybe, but it may take some time to heal the wounds of careless talks and remove the scars of scornful deeds. eventually, everyone will come into realization that bygones will be bygones, Lakers should move on after The Buss family, Shaq and Kobe.

Derrick Rose is no joke. The man knows how find a lacuna in the defense and get to the cup and finish. He possess refulgent handles, and his smallish stature belies his strength in driving to the basket. The comparisons to a stronger, higher-leaping Tony Parker are very accurate. An American Tony Parker. Heh.

mamba24:
I know its been a while since I posted, but that's no reason to be dropped from the roll call, is it?
Even with our loss to Detroit we seem to be distancing ourselves from the field in the west (everybody else has at least 4 losses).
I think we can handle Chicago and Phoenix should be a good game. Shaq seems to be playing better under TPorter, but he'll go down with some injury before the All-Star break.

I'm going to say that Rose is more like Smush Parker right now then he is like MJ.Posted by:

If The Lakers think like that they will lose big time. Rose is the real deal.

Fatty's prediction: Lakers win big and Mamba passes out with excitement.
Posted by: Fatty | November 18, 2008 at 09:38 AM
I think we need to add to that:
The excitement builds, and BEFORE Mamba24 passes out he raises his thong on the flagpole outside his house in victory for all to see. This creates quite a stir in the neighborhood, and while Mamba24 passes out from excitement, the neighbors fight to be the first to remove the dreaded purple & gold thong from their sight. The Laker Blog CRUE comes to the rescue of said thong, and preserve it at an undisclosed location until it is needed. Mamba24 comes to and, realizing the danger the CRUE put themselves in for his - and his thong's - sake, writes another poem - this one an epic on par with The Iliad. He wins the Nobel Prize for Literature & is able to retire and dedicate his life to the award winning LA Times Blog, for which the CRUE is ever grateful. As a result of this, the Lakers go on to win consecutive championships year after year, and the 4th Dynasty never ends.
Sounds about right to me....
