Know thy enemy: Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings, Portland Trail Blazers

October 21, 2008 |  4:21 pm

Climbingladder_2 BK kicked things off by taking you through last season's (and potentially this season's) bottom feeders.  Now it's time to move up the ladder's rung a bit and check out three more teams that missed the playoffs but at least came closer. Will any member of the trio improve their outside-looking-in viewpoint?  In my opinion, yes, but only one. And for those looking to swell with local hoops pride, my apologies. Along those lines...

Los Angeles Clippers (23-59, 12th Western Conference, fifth Pacific)

Key additions: Wow, where to start?  Baron Davis, Marcus Camby, Ricky Davis, Eric Gordon, Jason Hart, DeAndre Jordan, Brian Skinner, Steve Novak
Key Ssbtractions: Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Quinton Ross, Brevin Knight, Josh Powell, Dan Dickau (technically speaking, as he played a lot), Smush Parker (I slay me!)

You know it's been a busy Clippers off-season when they managed to both bring in and announce the retirement of Jason Williams. Personally, I think White Chocolate was a bullet dodged, but the odd turn of events involving the winningest Clipper ever underscore how frantically the Clippers worked to off-set defections expected (Corey Maggette) and head spinning (Elton Brand).  he red, white and blue are offering fans a complete overhaul of a squad that limped (literally and figuratively) to an uninspiring 2008 finish. But will they be better?

That, as they say, would be the $64,000 Question.

On paper, the Clippers aren't talent starved. Baron Davis' history includes coach clashes, injuriesBd (thankfully, no surgery for the most recent)and weight issues (but move over Valerie Bertinelli, there's a new sheriff in town).  Plus, there's a potentially worrisome future for a social butterfly and budding movie mogul's L.A. homecoming.  Head screwed on, however, he's an elite player. Still sore over a trade that made him feel like a leper, Marcus Camby will be motivated to make Denver's brass look idiotic and could combine with Chris Kaman to become one of the NBA's best frontlines.  Al Thornton needs to refine his game, but is a sick athlete and fun to watch even when playing poorly.  Ricky Buckets can score from anywhere (which works out great, since he'll fire from anywhere).  Lottery pick Eric Gordon has been compared to Ben Gordon, but with an interest in defending. The underrated Jason Hart enjoyed his best season in L.A. and is a solid "BD backup."  Cuttino Mobley's no longer an ideal starter, but he's pretty solid off any bench.  Contract years aside, Tim Thomas is nakedly content to do nothing but chuck jumpers, but they sometimes fall in bunches. With everyone healthy and on the same page, this rotation could cause fits on any given night. Unfortunately, neither condition is a given.

B.Diddy, Kaman, Thomas, Gordon and Camby have already dealt with various ouchee's and it's not even November.  Even more concerning is whether the roster's freewheeling nature can mesh with Mike Dunleavy's "hands on/short leash" coaching style, which has rubbed many players the wrong way.  He's claimed running and spontaneity will be encouraged, but seeing is believing.  Until then, I have a feeling a roster with so many players that seem the polar opposite of "Dunleavy guys" is destined to grow sick of their coach and take matters in their own hands, particularly if the season doesn't start well or Baron -- the make-or-break guy in this equation -- fancies himself the alpha male.

I consider the Clippers the equivalent of a game taken off the board by Vegas because too much info is missing. So many believable outcomes.  I could see everyone banding together and surprising the naysayers with a low playoff seed.  I could see this largely headstrong crew coming to blows in the locker room by mid-February.  I could see them being too indifferent to even butt heads by mid-January.  It's really that big of a crap shoot in my eyes.  But I've got to take a stab.  Call me a cynic, but I get the feeling Demi Moore didn't kiss these dice for luck.

PREDICTION: They'll definitely improve on last year's dismal record, but the quick meshing of a seriously reshuffled deck and continual health have been a tall order in Clippers Land.  Thus, I'll say 38 wins and 10th place in the West.

Good blog: The name's about as original as "Lakers Blog," but Kevin Arnovitz's "ClipperBlog" delivers the goods.

Sacramento Kings (38-44, 11th Western Conference, fourth Pacific)

Key additions: Bobby Jackson, Donte Green, Jason Thompson
Key subtractions: Ron Artest, Anthony Johnson, Shareef Abdur-Rahim

The way he served up waffles like a Roscoe's waiter, had the Kings waited it out another week, Ron Artest would have followed up his off-season trade request by tatting "King for Life" on his chest and publicly announcing the intention to spurn any offer that didn't include a Maloof brother's name on the contract.  But Gavin and Joe decided enough was enough, and with good reason.  After trading Mike Bibby to Atlanta for mostly expiring deals, a rebuild was clearly underway, a project that doesn't exactly scream "Ron-Ron friendly."  Nor does it scream "Entertaining for fans to watch."

Martin We'll start with the positive. Keira Knightley doppelganger Kevin Martin is a budding All-Star who slashes, connects from distance and gets to the line.  And like brother-in-skinny-baller-arms Rip Hamilton, he moves extremely well (and nonstop) without the rock, requiring his defender to run around all game like Forrest Gump.  Even first-team all-defensive Kobe Bryant admitted the "quick as a cat" K-Mart is a challenging cover.  Beyond Martin, the pickings become ironically "slim" for a typically explosive threat.  John Salmons played well in stints as a starting small forward, Beno Udrih may be worthy of the cash bestowed upon him and Francisco Garcia can hit from outside.  But these guys hardly force coaches to alter game plans, and compared to the front-court contributors, they're a three-headed monster.

By definition, any player is more threatening with a rifle than a basketball, but the degree to which avid hunter Brad Miller is growing so must be disconcerting to Sacto.  Ditto the weed habit that'll cost him five games.  From there, you've got Miller's default replacement-in-the-making (Spencer Hawes) unless lapped by a recent No. 12 pick who may pan out but was an undeniable reach (Jason Thompson), an Artest deal breaker (Kenny Thomas), a kid mostly known for dating Candace Parker (Shelden Williams), and a 7-footer so gangly Mom likened his appearance to "half a spider" (Mikki Moore).  (On a related note, with Martin, Moore, Francisco Garcia, Quincy Douby and Donte Greene, the Kings are one unusually thin team.  What's up with that?  I can't think of anything to do in Sacto but eat.  Is the Kings' meal per diem especially chintzy?  Are the local vittles that awful?  Are hunger strikes all the rage in Cali's capital?  Sonny Belfast, thoughts?)

Scoring was no problem for Sacto, but the prevention of points raises concerns.  Artest may be a loon, but he's a loon with serious lock-down talent.  With him in Houston, opponents could conceivably bump the 104.8 ppg (NBA-23rd) or 46.6 FG% (NBA-22nd) tallied against the Kings last season.  Throw in the lack of veterans to lead the way and you're looking at a season that could be more about auditioning the best co-stars for Martin than objectives involving the win column.

PREDICTION: Ooogly.  They won't be the worst in the west, but definitely the Pacific, with a win total dropping by 10 or so.

Quality blog: I've enjoyed Sactown Royalty and suspect others will too.

Portland Trail Blazers (41-41, 10th Western Conference, third Northwest division)
Key additions: Greg Oden, Rudy Fernandez, Jerryd Bayless, Iku Diogu, Nicolas Batum
Key subtractions: Jarrett Jack, James Jones

Once word spread that No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden would miss last season after micro-fracture surgery, the Blazers were pegged by the masses as a potential rich team too young to do damage in the ultra-competitive West (an assessment also made by yours truly).  The masses, it turns out, are all dumb and stuff, having underestimated the skills of Brandon Roy (a natural leader and serious all-around player), LaMarcus Aldridge (not much on D, but a demon with the ball in his hands), Travis Outlaw (absurdly long arms) and Martell Webster (good stroke from all over).  The stars were well complemented by Steve Blake, Joel Przybilla, Channing Frye, Jarrett Jack and James Jones, the latter two gone but potentially not missed with rooks Rudy Fernandez (outstanding for Spain's Olympic bunch), Jerryd Bayliss (an SPL standout) and Nicolas Batum (playing well in preseason) on board.  Sucks that Webster will miss eight to 10 weeks with a stress fracture, but that laundry list of players probably drives home that Portland is blessed with some depth.  Any way sliced, the Blazers are a team stacked for the future and ready to make a playoff run as we speak.  So what, if anything, could derail an expected leap?

The weight of expectations, whether collective or the poundage specifically on Oden's shoulders.

Gregodenswitch_3 In my eyes, the latter concern is more potentially legit.  Huge anticipation for Oden's career has led to "the next Bill Russell" talk.  Comparisons can even include Oden's beard, which is not just a beard, but a spectacular, dual-tiered beard atop a beard!  Big shoes to fill, and from the few occasions I've met Oden, he's struck me as introspective, thoughtful and earnest.  All great traits, for sure, but too much of that mix and you have a guy perhaps detrimentally concerned about excelling, as suspected by the Oregonian's Jason Quick.

Oden should cut himself a break, because Portland success doesn't require an immediate second coming of the NBA's most dominant player-coach.  If Oden is merely a solid addition (I actually think he'll be more, but for argument's sake), Portland automatically becomes that much better.  That's not to suggest Oden set his goals low, just not so high that he frustrates himself out of a good performance in search of sheer brilliance.  Coach Nate McMillan just wants Oden to have fun, an objective his teammates will hopefully prod along.  Or just bring to fruition by example, since I don't see these cats crumbling under a brighter spotlight.

I was recently at a Nike commercial shoot with Oden, Roy and Aldridge and asked about increased eyes on them.  As far as everyone was concerned, the more retinas, the merrier.  "I don't look at it as pressure," shrugged Roy.  "We've got the talent to do it.  I don't feel like I've got to shoulder a certain amount of weight.  I look over at LaMarcus, Travis.  We've got Greg.  We're so deep, I don't think we feel that pressure.  We just feel that we need to find a way to learn to play together.  I think that's going to be our biggest obstacle."

Considering they've already shown an ability to work as a unit, doesn't sound like an unrealistic goal. If anything, the pressure may be on everyone else to win a chip before these guys figure out how good they can truly be.

PREDICTION: Portland hasn't reached the playoffs since 2003, when the "Jail Blazers" were in full effect.  They've successfully erased that image and this season, the drought also ends.  I'm going six seed, with a win total about 50.

Good blog: It's not as info/analysis heavy as a fan or MSM site, but Oden's personal blog is often pretty entertaining.

Ok No more Nick names...

1. Clips -- Are the Clips - Won't make the playoffs - 9th seed. Dunleavy as GM experiment may get him fired.

2. Kings - Hooorrrrribbblle - Bill Walton style. They can always look down on the Thunder, I suppose.

3. Trail Bangers - Will have a better record than the Jazz.

12th in the Western Conference for the Clippers?!?! BK, have you gone mad?!?!

I WILL not let you forget this grevious error.

Oh, no I shall not.

Go Clippers!

GO LAKERS!

BK,

You actually think that the Trailblazers aren't going to make the playoffs? Have you been drinking crazy juice?

GO LAKERS!

Thank you Charles!

Jon K,

You're not paying attention on a couple of counts.

1) Those records listed at the top of each team were for 2008.

2) I wrote these, not BK.

AK

BK,

I'm an idiot. I've been bouncing through your write-up like a schitzophrenic ferret. So you DO expect the Trailblazers to make the playoffs and you expect the Clippers to improve.

Right.

Ummm... okay. You're not insane. I guess I'm the one with less balanced sanity today. My apologies.

GO LAKERS!

AK,

I've been staring at the computer too long today. My apologies. I need some rest.

GO LAKERS!

Jon K,

No worries. It happens.

AK

"Key Additions: Ron Artest, Anthony Johnson, Shareef Abdur-Rahim"

Addition by subtraction?

P Ang,

Nope, reversed the headers. You the man.

Thanks,

AK

Ever since the Lakers got Gasol they have frequently/consistently beaten teams by 10 or 20 points more than the odds makers predicted (forget Boston).

Now, first game against Portland, it will be interesting how the odds makers calculate the point spread, given the Lakers' success, Portland's depth, and the x-factor that Portland has had the Lakers' number lately. That first game should be a most excellent preview into the rest of the season for both teams...

???????????

One word LAME

How unoriginal can you be
LOL

Portland is going to be better than expected. Last year they were supossed to suck and they went on that winning streak. They will be better because of Oden but mostly due to being older and wiser. This is a young bunch and they gained valuable experience last year. If Oden can play decent and Aldridge and Roy get better than last year, this team could be top 4 in the West.

I'm going to opening night in a week and I can't wait to see the Lakers battle the Blazers. I think the Lakers are going to run in to a tough game. Sure, the Lakers will win but I'm gonna say that the Blazers are going to show good things in that opening game and carry it throughout the year.

Lamar = 6th man of the year

GO LAKERS

Gotta love a Forrest Gump reference.

I don't think the Blazers will make the playoffs, but I don't think they'll win 50. I think they'll probably win about 45 or 46, which will be enough to make the playoffs since the west isn't as deep this year.

Based on his performance last year, I don't think it's a stretch to say that Brandon Roy is the 2nd best two-guard in the West, right behind Kobe and slightly ahead of T-Mac. I'm looking forward to seeing Kobe v. Roy in the season opener, as well as the Gasol/Bynum and Aldridge/Oden matchup. This could be a great rivalry for the next few years.

I don't care for all the twin references, or the tree references as nicknames. What happens when LO is in the game at the same time?

Why not something simple like "Magnum Force" for all the bigs?

Or, if it's just Pau & Drew playing at the 4 & 5, ".45 Magnum". Clean, simple and unused in the NBA.

EJK,

I disagree, Roy is emerging but I wouldn't rate him above T-Mac. I would rate Kobe, T-Mac, Iverson, Ginobili, and possibly Kevin Martin to be above Brandon Roy.

-blitz

EJK,

Roy is good but the gap between him and Kobe is still pretty big.

Speaking of the Kings...

I'm watching the Laker/Kings game again, waiting for LTV to come on, and the first thing that sticks out:

PAU IS THE EFFIN MAN!!!!

It's funny because it feels like Pau has been here for years.

What a cool style he has. Not only to blend in on the floor so seamlessly, but off the court, his graceful presents resembles a good friend that you've had for years.

Watching these lakers play together is a joy to watch.

Even on the opening tip.
The very first time The Trees have ever started an NBA game together...
Bynum vs Miller...
Bynum miss-jumps and gets air with his first swipe...
Cat-like reflexes allow him another shot...
Andrew taps it to Pau...
Pau bounces passes to Vlad for an AND 1...

Assist: Pau
3 Points: Vlad

First two seconds of the game!!

Go Lakers!!

dan

If pressure on Oden to achieve is the only roadblock to winning, barring injury the Trailblazers are top 5.

I've beaten this theme to death, but they'll have more than just the Lakers number this year. Athletically, they're the best in the West. We've got Kobe and a better bench but they may have arrived early.

I really enjoy watching LO but if you are trading him, I say trade him to Charlotte for Gerald Wallace (a true beast) and Raymond Felton and his expiring contract. The shutdown defender we need and another experienced guy on point.

and
Bynum + Gasol = The Great Lakes

After pestering and asking and basically begging for the Lakers Blog Fantasy League to come back... it's back!

last year we had a good ol' trash-talking time and if anybody's interested, join along

we're doing a Yahoo! League

all you have to do is "Join a Custom League," type in your information and create your team

the league ID is 108133
and the password is "brianshaw" ...one word.

hurry, we only got a 12 spots! we draft this saturday

Xodus & Long Time,

Noooooooooooooooo way do I have the time! I learned not to debate with LTLF or blitz. They are indomitable. I will wait for news of the extension announcement, which will happen in the next two weeks. It will happen. Wait and see. Like this year’s politics, everything will be fine in the end. I trust Mitch and the Lakers front office to do the right thing. It will be interesting to watch. In the meantime, a third strong game would be nice.

Mamba,

Pre-season or not. Roll Call Rocks. Thanks,

Tom

Blitz,

Once again, I agree. Ginobili gets no respect because he doesn't start and Kevin Martin is grossly underrated.

I don't like T-Mac anymore though. He shoots low percentages now and turns the ball over.

Lakers_sth

Many many thanks for the link. You're cool.

Good pass to Drew from Bynum.

Anyone know of another link other than justintv? it keeps freezing on me. thx!

watching game...early impression:

you can just see this team...when it's on, they are heads and shoulders (pun intended) better than the opposition.

Is anyone else thinking...what is Jason Richardson doing in this team?!

Oh how he has fallen. Although the GS Warriors ain't that far up lol.

Pau is a good passing big man.

Early on, it seems like this starting unit is starting to get down the fundamentals of playing together. I like the effort defensively. Charlotte is going to be easy to defend this early in the season b/c the Larry Brown offense takes a long time to run properly.

Just like Pau helped LO raise his game last season, he's going to be instrumental in creating opportunities for Drew as well.

How about this!?!? LO, Pau and Drew on the floor at the same time for the first time. Nice.

And they say Kobe no longer has hops. That was pretty high!

Last game we gambled A LOT. And we blew it open.

There are teams where you can't gamble as much. This is such a team. They will run on you when you miss, and when you gamble, more often than not, you miss.

Need to be smarter.

Continuation at the end of the clock...sure hope we get this during the season lol.

adam morrison and robert swift are tied for having the worst hair in the NBA

I agree that Kobe is better than Brandon right now, but the gap is not as big as it appears on the surface. Brandon isn't the flashy player that Kobe is, and he'll never score as much, but he is a complete player and a natural leader. He brings all of the intangibles. And he's more of a team player right now than Kobe is. He's solid while Kobe is spectauclar. Both are winners but for much different reasons. I love Brandon's game.

Personally if I were starting a team, I'd take Brandon behind Kobe and right behind T-Mac, but by end of year, he's going to be right up there fighting for second best guard in the West. Of course, this is predicated on him remaining healthy.

I think the first game LA wins by 15 or more. If you've watched the Blazers in preseason, they show flashes of what they are going to be this year, but they haven't found themselves yet. Several of these guys are still new and everyone's still becoming aquainted. After a few games, they'll start to gel, and by end of year, Portland will be a major force in the playoffs.

Blitz,

The T-Mac of old would certainly rate above Roy. But with all of his chronic back problems, his game has declined and he has admittedly lost a step or two. No doubt he's still a great player, but I think Roy has surpassed him, at least by a little bit. As for Iverson, he's still a great scorer, but I don't like his overall game. I think Roy has a better all-around game. As for Ginobili, he's still one of my favorite players to watch, but I think Roy's skills are comparable to his.

Xodus,

You're right, the gap is still pretty big between Kobe and Roy. Roy kind of reminds me of a young Grant Hill. He has the potential to close the gap over the next few years.

The second unit needs to be better in the half court. They are fantastic in transition but we're seeing too many stale offensive possess leading to easy transition buckets for charlotte.

good game thus far. Man shasha needs a haircut!!!

Powell with a hard, hard foul...

flagrant yes...but I like it. He's not taking a layup. That's nice.

Bynum (damaged goods) can't jump and Luke a.k.a. Mr. IQ makes another mental mistake
Lamar still has that stupid look on his face when he screws up.

It's beginning to look alot like the Lakers again

Makes you think, if either Ariza or Bynum had been ready to play in the Finals, the Lakers win the title.

Don,

Must disagree with you on that. You'd pass over CP13 for Roy? After Kobe of course.

CP13 was 2nd in MVP voting for a reason. He just needs to learn to rebound lol.

Sun Yue is not good yet. He's not even close. Any commentary to the contrary is not watching him play basketball.

Can you explain to me what Phil trying to acomplish by playing this chinnese guy and Kobe together? We have 4 small forwards sitting on the bench and he playing this guy who just missed all 3 FT in addition to every jump shot he is taking? Send him to NBDL, not ready for NBA even in reserv capacity.

The Bobcats haven't won a game yet. The Lakers could care less. Recipe for a loss.

Claass Claaasss Claaassssss
Shut up, Thank you

Teacher is very disappointed with the effort put forth in this new school year.

Little PJ, as teachers aide i told you to not stray from the class subject matter, but you've already gone off into tangents that are not relevant to the course.
Just look at my former prized assisistant, Baby Larry Brown. He teaches only the topics necessary and he is very disciplined in his tutoring. His classmates have a better foundation of the course principles. Your classmate are still trying to figure out the pythagorean theorem. Remember you don't need a triangle formula for a rectangle.

So far the pre-tests have been less than satisfactory, you have one week before they really count.

PJ are you listening to me, put down that book "Cultural Relationships in a Non Conformist World in a Zen-Starved Society" and get to work.

Thank You

The bobcats want that first win so bad, and get used to this - the lesser teams will be trying to gut the lakers every time like it's the Finals.

Part of the burden being wc champs.
