Lakers, Bynum agree on extension
The LAT's Mike Bresnahan reports that the Lakers and Andrew Bynum have reached agreement on a contract extension:
The Lakers and Andrew Bynum have agreed in principle on a four-year contract extension worth about $58 million, keeping their center of the future in the fold through the 2012-13 season, according to sources familiar with the negotiations who would not speak publicly.
Bynum, who will make $2.8 million this season, will earn close to $42 million over the first three years of his contract extension. The fourth year will be a team option for about $16 million...
Basically, management and Camp Bynum met in the middle to find some harmony - the Lakers giving more money than originally proposed, Bynum accepting a shorter deal for less than the max that mitigates the team's risk, but to his benefit could get him back on the free-agent market quicker. In the end, both sides ought to come out feeling good about the deal, Bynum especially. $42 million guaranteed is a lot of money. $58, if the option is picked up? Well, that's even more.
For the Lakers, assuming Drew is what they, and most writers and fans, think he is, this is money very well spent. There is some risk -- Bynum is yet to finish a full NBA season as a starter -- but given that they can get out of the deal in three years should things turn sour, it's a very reasonable, relatively low-risk gamble for the organization. While I always believed long term Bynum wasn't going anywhere, I'm a little surprised an agreement was reached before the Halloween deadline and thought Bynum would enter restricted free agency this off-season, but clearly once the terms and perameters were adjusted, it was easier to reach a deal.
UPDATE: More news below!!! but this is the story that will dominate conversation.

Our Lakers-Clippers video recap (player and PJ vids on the side of the page):
Those things are sweeping the nation, you know.
Overall, it's fair to say that whatever NBA scheduling official was responsible for forcing the Clippers, on the one night of the year they maybe, possibly, perhaps get to see top billing on the town's NBA marquee, to open their season against the Lakers ought to be dismissed. Apparently, the news that Lakers fans love to gobble up tix when the red, white, and blue host the purple and gold -- cheap Laker game! -- is yet to reach New York. Thus the Lakers found themselves wearing purple but playing before a very sympathetic crowd Wednesday night as they absolutely crushed the Clipper ship, 117-79.
That's two games and two wins, by a combined total of 58 points. Day-um. Just as it was in Tuesday's win over Portland, the Lakers played some very solid D, limiting the LAC to 36.7% shooting on the night -- this after the Clippers were 11-22 through the first quarter. There was also balance, with seven Lakers finishing in double figures, and the offensive load spread through all 12 guys who dressed. Again, the ball movement was crisp, as the Lakers racked up assists both fancy and pedestrian.
In short, the Lakers looked really good, and the Clippers looked like dudes who had never actually played together. Both sound about right, though Phil Jackson notes it's a little too early to be choosing a caterer for the post-parade bash.
Given their depth, back-to-backs should be less of an issue for the Lakers this season. Of course, blowing teams out on the front end takes the edge off, too.
The Lakers are off today, and will practice Friday.

LakerTom,
I humbly submit to your correctness of the timing of this signing, and will forever praise you in glory and awe.
LakerTom is the greatest.

WOO-HOO!!
I like the deal a lot. It's fair and makes sense for both sides.
With that out of the way, let's get back to our previously schedule programming of beating the hell out teams.

What better way to celebrate two blow-out wins than with a very decent extension given to our future HOF center?
This is an excellent business decision and I've gotta give Kuptchack and Buss credit on this one. He's making max money, we've got hi locked in for a decent 3 years and we're not throwing caution to the wind with a bad contract here.
Great job Lakers! No wonder he played with a little pep in his step yesterday.

Amidst all the euphoria of the first two games, I'm still inclined to pinch myself a few times to make sure this is real. The regular season still has 80 games to go, and it is a long time between now and the end of June.
Watching AB17 bounce back after a crappy first game makes me ok with his big money deal, but I sure hope the $$$ doesn't go to his head. He is still young and in many ways immature, and that's lots of dough. Even LBJ has yet to prove he's worth all his money and hype.
Seeing all three units on the floor on Wednesday night has convinced me that this edition of the Lakers has the potential to surpass any before it. Like I said, I still need to pinch myself a few times, but it is hard to deny what we are witnessing.
What's best is that if the team can keep up this level of play, both Kobe and Fish have the ability to save their legs for June, when they'll most be needed.
It's another great day to be a Lakers fan. Go Lakers!

Jon-
The basic parameters don't change. It's about how high a payroll Dr. Buss is willing to absorb, how much the Lakers are willing to offer, and how much Odom is willing to accept to stay. Any decisions they made with LO, even if it came before Drew signing next summer, would have been made with Bynum's contract factored in.
This just makes it so they can more accurately project next year's expenses.

Great news. Super.
And...news out of Cleveland has the Lakers possibly in need of clearing out some cap space. How else are we gonna we pay for LeBron?
From cnnsi:
Privately, LeBron James' circle had been telling people that they don't just expect him to leave in the summer of 2010, but in the words of one James associate to a high-ranking league official: He's gone. With the Knicks, there are two teams a source familiar with James' thinking says intrigue him: The Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks.

I don't like the new blog format during games.
It makes it hard to scroll or to see much before or after your post. I like to look back and see what people have said. Having the full screen instead of a small box is vital for that.
The inability to hit returns without accidentally sending the message is annoying too.
And it is, I guess, automatic. So lots of stuff is flying by in the tiny box and I don't have time to read it.
Finally, the send sound is annoying.
The new format does provide polling ability. But I come around more for the discussion and blogging than insta-polls. Given the choice between blogging enjoyment and polls, I'd take blogging enjoyment any day.
What do you all think??? Remember the insta-poll on the new blog was only responded to by people that hung around despite the discomfort of the new blog format. It was a very biased sample.
SORRY TO DOUBLE POST THIS, but I think it is important to have a real discussion about the format. I don't want to post it on the end of a thread that is played out. Can we have a whole forum about it?

It's always nice to hear about these types of situations coming to a compromise - rather than going to the extreme either way. Not that this had anything to do with it, but opening night should've opened Drew's eyes to just how far he has to go, while last night demonstrated to the organization just how valuable he is.
I'm glad this won't be a cloud hanging over the season at all anymore. I guess we can look forward to more videos of Drew "making it rain" at da club.

How much is the cut of LakerTom in initiating, promoting and insisting a higher figure on the blog and finally got his mark at 58M? He deserve at least 10% plus options, bonuses and privies compared to David Lee's contrarian approach. LakerTom's posts are more objective, fair and justifiable in signing the beast.

Yay, very reasonable numbers!!!
As for the win:
Lakers look good, but I hope they don't take this to heart.
and
Clippers look bad, but I hope they don't take this to heart.
Otherwise, that second team is going to feast on other second strings. It seems to have taken on Jordan's personality no matter who is on with him.

I liked what I saw from Bynum in terms of his game last night. I did not like that he seems to have caught Sashaitis. Dude, you're too good to complain after bad calls. Keep the emotion but drop the attitude. Just play, stay injury-free and you'll win 70 this season.
So glad he's locked up though.
Wow. These Lakers are very, very good and will be for a while.
Losing Turiaf, I hate to say, may have been a blessing in disguise. Love Ronny, of course, but did you get a load of Chris Mihm last night? Our third string center is better than many starters in this league. And the rest of this league...is in trouble.

Pig,
Thanks for the challenge. This is an easy one. Who would you rather have close out a game, Kobe or LBJ? LBJ has yet to prove he's a great closer. And until LBJ leads his team to a championship, even his marketing team admits that he hasn't truly arrived.
Posted by: Rick Friedman | October 30, 2008 at 10:14 AM
The tension was so thick, you could cut it with a Ginsu knife.
The Lakers blog was offering Andrew Bynum 5 years and 55 million.
Laker Tom wanted the max, 17 million for 5 years.
Something had to give or this argument would never end.
Solomon Kupchak finally said in a demanding tone, "Give me the knife." All gasped as Mitch raised the knife above his head, held it high for all to see, and then proceeded to cut the baby in two.
"OMG! A compromise", Xodus exclaimed, "Why didn't I think of that?"
Tears of joy streaming down Laker Tom's face, he sat quietly, contemplating the moment, and what it meant to the Lakers future.
Long Time Laker Fan was seen nodding his head in approval, with a quiet smile on his face. It was more than he wanted to pay, but it was the right decision.
And finally, there was Edwin. Of all the bloggers, he was the most satisfied. Cooler heads had prevailed. Blog order was restored. That's all he ever really wanted.
The real winner in the end of course is Andrew Bynum. The 21 year old wonder kid who threw dollar bills to the disco crowd on his birthday. For him, one hundred dollar bills would be no problem now.
His mind would quickly wonder with what to do with his new found wealth. And for him, it would be gaming on his new computer.
How much would M.I.T. want for their Super Computer? Bynum thought.
Oh yes, and let's not forget. Somewhere in some seedy bar, Jim Buss is buying drinks for the patrons and they don't even know who he his and what they are toasting. But Jim Buss does, and that's all that matters.

Two games in, and, all homerism honestly put aside, I can't fathom another team in this league challenging us for a GAME, much less a series.
I know, I know - we haven't really played anyone yet, it's a long season, we'll have some off nights, any given team, yadda yadda yadda. But the thing I notice is, these are the teams that have given us the most trouble over the past few years. Last year's Finals aside, we typically do well against the quality teams out there - it's the Bobcats of the world that have given us fits. For Lakers fans, there has been nothing more frustrating or mystifying than how we can shellac San Antonio at home, then turn around and lose a home game against Charlotte the same week. Watching the Purple and Gold law down the law against these speed bumps was like freaking Christmas.
What's great about playing 10 deep is that, even if someone is having an off night, that just means that another dude who is hungry for extra minutes gets his wish. It's like keeping your attack dogs slightly underfed - it makes them lean, hungry, and extra nasty. Fish having an off night? Guess what - more Farmar. Vlad Rad not getting it done? Ariza's coming for your children. Kobe needs some time off to go to Vegas? No prob - The Machine and the Bench Mob will get it done.
HOLY CRAP DO YOU REALIZE THAT IN THE SPAN OF TWO YEARS LUKE WALTON HAS GONE FROM OUR THIRD BEST PLAYER TO OUR NINTH BEST PLAYER????
Kobe keeping these guys focused and right, the FO keeping things cool with Bynum and the new contract, Lamar like a giant Fonzie coming off the bench, everyone clickin like chicken on the court - I say call me W. and BRING IT ON.

SETTING THE PACEโฆ
Thatโs what the Lakers are committed to doing this year as they set their sights on the best record in the NBA and home court advantage throughout the playoffs. You have to love how the team has come together. There is no doubt in my mind that we are going to break through and win the Championship this year. Injuries are all we really have to fear.
Phil and the coaching staff have done a marvelous job getting this team to accept their roles and the challenge to up their energy and effort, especially on defense. Seeing Tex Winter sitting next to Phil brought a smile to my face on opening night. Seeing the Lakers push the ball in transition at every opportunity also reminded me of how valuable Texโs guidance has been to Phil and the Lakers. This is not your fatherโs Triangle Offense.
But speaking of defense, this is also not your fatherโs Lakers defense. I love how the Lakers are playing aggressive pressing and trapping perimeter defense. I have been blogging for over a year that this is the style of defense that best fits the abilities and demeanor of our teamโs players. With Drew and Pau anchoring the paint and protecting the rim, the Lakers perimeter defenders can play much tighter perimeter defense, jumping the passing lanes and forcing steals and turnovers to fuel a Showtime-like transition game.
Let the Rockets and the Celtics and the rest of the boring pack-it-in collapsing defensive teams that try to turn opponents into jump shooting teams play Mike Tโs โseal the laneโ style of defense. The Lakers are going to make the talking heads on ESPN and FSN swivel in circles with their exciting, crowd inspiring, in-your-face perimeter defense anchored by the best shot blocking front line in the Association. Basketball is a game of transition and I have always believed that a defensive system that is aggressive like the pressing and trapping the Lakers are currently deploying is much easier to get players excited about than a passive sagging and collapsing defense. There is no soft in this defense โ just tough.
I also love how Kobe has reprised his Olympic Gold role of defensive stopper and offensive closer. He has continued the same aggressiveness that he displayed in leading Team USA in the Olympics. I loved how he went right after Baron Davis on defense and how when the Clippers fought back to take a 1-point lead in the first quarter last night, Kobe the closer went to work and put the Lakers comfortably back in the lead. There were a lot of doubters when I proposed that this team had enough offense that the best use of Kobe was to reprise his role from the Olympics. After watching the first two games, it should be obvious that this is the Kobe we need to win the championship. Kobe is setting the pace on defense.
While we have only played two games, there are some obviously promising signs of what we can expect going forward. First, the starting lineup has really come together. Kobe has been inspiring. Drew and Pau and starting to play together superbly. Fisher seems to be revitalized at the point. And Vlade has been playing great and providing that long range shooting threat the lineup needed. The Lakers starting lineup is probably the strongest in the league and will only get better. As many of us surmised, moving Lamar to the bench as 6th man has resulted in a better more balanced and effective starting lineup.
Second, the primary 9-player rotation that Phil is using plus the fact that there are going to be a lot of routs is going to really impact in playersโ scoring averages and playing time. We may not see a Laker player average over 20 points per game other than Kobe, who I predict will end up averaging in the low 20โs. This team is so deep that team stats may well become more important than individual stats. The big difference between this year and last year, other than the injuries, is that from top to bottom, the young players on the Lakers have taken their game to another level, especially Farmar and Ariza, our Bruins Duo.
When Lamar, Jordan, Trevor, and Sasha combine with Drew or Pau, our second unit is better than most teamโs first unit, as they proved last night when Jordan Farmar took over the game and the second unit killed the Clippers. I watched Tony Parker run rings around Shaq and the Suns in the first game and then saw Jordan Farmar do the same thing to the Clippers. I wonder if anybody else saw the great similarities in their styles. Tony is still a step quicker but Jordan has a better outside shot. I was also greatly impressed at how aggressive Jordan was staying on defense, even after being screened out.
Amazingly, this team is so deep that when Chris, Luke, and Josh get into the game, it doesnโt even seem like garbage time because they are playing so well. It is so great to see Chris Mihm playing well at last. He has been unkindly maligned by so many bloggers when all the guy has done is given his all to the Lakers. And anybody who wants to continue to call Luke by derogatory names needs to wake up. As AK said, any team with Luke as the 11th man has to have a hell of a roster.
Finally, proof positive that there is never too much good news when it comes to the Lakers, congratulations to Andrew Bynum on his new contract. As I have stated many times, I was always confident that the Lakers and Drew would come to an agreement. As I said before, there was no way that the Lakers were not going to allow Drew to even sniff free agency. And after seeing the damage we can do as a team, how could Drew โ or Kobe or Lamar down the road โ not be willing to take less to keep this team and dream intact? The 4-year deal for $58M was fair to both sides and it was good to see it not go down to the wire. We should all be grateful for the great job done by Mitch in locking Drew up.
Hopefully, the bloggers who doubted Drew or wanted to let him become a free agent or thought he was only worth $10M per year will now jump on the bandwagon. Drew is not even playing as well as he did before getting injured last year but has added great interior defense and toughness. Give him a month to get his game fully going and you will see that the Lakers got a bargain. This Lakers roster has the potential to be one of the greatest teams in the storied history of the Lakers. Bring on the rings and parades because these are not your fatherโs Lakers. Can anybody doubt now that God is a Lakers fan?
Tom

Anyone else notice that adding Farmar to the starting lineup is like adding Nitrous to a hot rod engine? You can't run on it all the time or it would blow your whole system apart, but in small increments, it shoots you past the competition.
FARMAR = NITROUS

blitz,
you wrote: Don't expect Trevor to shoot 40% shooter, that is not the strength of his game.
The lakers will win big this season that is the only certain thing.
Trevor has been shooting well make no mistake but don't think that Trevor will be shooting great all the time and be a shooter that Radman is, that is just as the same as believing Kobe will be the leading rebounder on the Lakers with Bynum and Gasol.
Or have you forgotten that Luke Walton also was shooting well in 2006-2007 but cooled down?
my response:
Long ago in a far away land, *I* TOLD you that Ariza would be working on his game during the summer. I'm
not going to get into the world of stats because as I
said before: There are lies, damn lies and statistics.
Therefore, I will make no comment about shooting 40%.
We are now in the regular season. Lamar is neither
the starting Point Forward, SG, SF or PF. He came into
camp "not in the best of shape". Ariza came in hungry.
Should Vlad do a "space cadet" routine, expect Ariza to
take his place over Lamar.
What I'm *really* saying is: You need to look at the quality
of the player vs. the ideaology of "our veterans before our youngings". So far, Ariza is out playing Lamar.
Admit it.
Go Lakers!
Go Kobe!

Off topic: Player watch on ex-Laker Ronnie Turiaf.
Warriors lost to Hornets by 5 pts. Ronnie played only 24 minutes, 4 R, 4 Blks, 4 PF and 0 pts. Corey Maggette made 27 pts on his first debut as a Warrior. They missed Baron's court leadership and Ellis who is suspended until December due to the leg injury in a non-Warrior athletic event considered as a personal activity and negligence of Mr. Ellis. The issue is very contentious and may go to Player's grievance committee. There is also a rumor that Warriors and Pistons are discussing possible trade of Prince and Stephen Jackson. Harrington wants out of GS while Nellie just signed extention of 2 more years.
Ronnie Turiaf must be having some remorseful thoughts of what a rich contract can do in form of implied pressure to be a productive player expected by the Coach, Management and Warrior fans. Had he stayed with the Lakers for less pay maybe a million less per year, he would be on the bench having a sweet time dancing, cajoling during garbage time with Mihm and Walton. Decisions, decisions, decisions, Lamar, think about that scenario.

Good for you Socks!
Now go throw the shot...
Posted by: Tim-4-Show | October 30, 2008 at 10:39 AM
Edwin-
The key sentiment there is dancing during garbage time. If he stayed, Ronny wouldn't play very much. In GS, he has a chance to establish himself with 25 minutes a night, and maybe make himself into a starter.
Due respect to the notion of "the most important thing is to play for a championship," it's hard to begrudge a guy for taking the chance to play over the chance to cheerlead for less money.
And when you talk about taking a million or so less, that's a substantial pay reduction given the terms of his contract.

REGARDING THE SALARY CAP
That will put us at apx. $90 million next year IF all things stay the same...Which they can't.
That is $30 million over the cap BEFORE we do anything about Kobe, Farmar, Ariza, LO, and Mihm.
Add AVERAGE numbers for the 5 players needing contracts, and we are at apx. $110 million a year; $50 million OVER the cap.
As Seals and Croft so ably sang, "We may never pass this way again" so Savor the season.

they give us full 4-quarter games, and sometimes more!"

Rick,
NP.
"LBJ has yet to prove he's a great closer."
According to 82games.com he is actually the best clutch performer in the NBA. They are stat geeks, but their methods are pretty sound and the guy can close. Look at the game against the Pistons in '06. Due scored 21 points in a row to end the game. They couldn't hold him.
"until LBJ leads his team to a championship, even his marketing team admits that he hasn't truly arrived"
He's been in the Finals, and although they didn't win, he got them there single handedly. Led the league in scoring last season and comes close to averaging a triple double. Dude is stud.
He deserves every penny he earns. That entire franchise rests on his back right now, and he's carried them into and through the playoffs on his own.

Man I just love my LAKERS, to see how this team has developed into their own is amazing and wonderful. When I watch the recordings of the games, sometimes 2 or 3 times a night, I make an effort to watch the fans and the opposing team players. I truly believe that you can see in their faces the feelings that runs through them about the LAKERS. They go through a rebuilding phase and 2 years later they are contenders for the championship again. LAKER are a professional franchise that knows how to take care of their players and fans. THANKS TO ALL IN THE LAKERS ORGANIZATION you have provided me with great entertainment through out the years.

BK,
I don't know what we mean by happiness? To be under pressure every night to improve and be a better player at 4M per season or a player relaxed and learn with Kobe, Pau and bynum during practice at 3M per year. Additional incentive is less spotlight from PJ and Laker fans and more time with the French night spots. As a starter role, Warriors were expecting for Ronnie to start 4th spot and or Center reliever, however the preseason games reveal that he is not ready to play longer minutes so Nellie just gave him only 24 minutes w/ Tson Chandler around. That is just one game, we will see more in the next 81 games. So far his contributions and pay is similar to Walton.

Kwame Brown plays 3 minutes in a glorious victory for Detroit last night.
Chris Mihm puts up 10 points in 9 minutes and Andrew Bynum inks a big contract after another glorious victory for the Lakers last night.
and to think... just a couple of years ago, Mihm was supposed to start with Kwame sliding up from PF to provide backup minutes at Center and Bynum was... well, he was available for mop up minutes...
Amazing how much things can change in just a few years...

ANOTHER SALARY CAP FACT:
Fish(5), Kobe(25), Walton(5), Pau(15), and Bynum(14)
A nice starting unit, but these players ALONE will put us at the cap next year.
It's gonna be a blood bath in the off-season.

I am very happy about the Bynum deal.
I have a small worry about Bynum not living up to his potential. He should know that to be great you have to work hard at it. Since he works with Lamar, "I love you but you are the poster child of unrealized potential" Odum, he should know that.
Even if he does not live up to the hype and become an all-star this season, we are SOO MUCH stronger with him. Just his presence and being a scoring option, a dependable guy, makes him totally worth paying to have around.
The deal is sealed. That makes us a closer lock to sealing the trophy deal.

Piston won tho' Kwame played only 3 mins. 0 pts. (Mike T. can't even promote his pet in the Pistons Blog.) Grizzlies lost and J-Critt did not play coach decision. Rockets won and Von Wafer DNP coach decision. Mo Evans team Magic lost and made only 8 pts. The former laker scrubs are currently jobless like Cookie, Smush, Shammond.
See what CHANGE can do? From paranoia to euphoria in 2008. Both Dan the man and Zakee are happy with the present state.

LAKER TOMโS SUMMER SCORECARD...
1. Install aggressive pressing and trapping perimeter defense. DONE!
2. Use defense to force steals and turnovers to fuel more fast breaks. DONE!
3. Have Kobe reprise his defensive role from the Olympics. DONE!
4. Turn Lamar into the 6th man and backup power forward. DONE!
5. Sign Andrew Bynum to an extension for around $15M per year. DONE!
This has been a remarkable summer, especially compared to last year. Now I can relax and wait for the country to elect a new president ๏ and for the Lakers to win their first of what will be a record setting string of championships.
Just one last comment before l let the Bynum extension issue die: The main reason that the Lakers signed Drew to this extension was to avoid the risk of him becoming a free agent. I hope that everybody finally understands this. Even those who wrongly claimed there was no risk. I think this proved for once and all that the Lakers were not going to let Drew become a free agent of any kind, restricted or unrestricted. Period!
2 down, 96 more to go. What a wonderful time to be a Lakers fan. We should all be thankful for Jerry and Jim Buss and Mitch putting up the money to keep this team together. Now letโs win out the regular season and playoffs. LOL.
Thanks for the shout outs from Pig, Jon K, Charles, Edwin, PsychedLakerGirl, Fatty, and dave (not Eric, LOL). Letโs hope my lucky streak continues for the Lakers and all Lakers Bloggers. This is going to be the greatest Lakers season ever and we get to share it.

"Pig" Miller,
"Laker Tom I humbly submit to your correctness of the timing of this signing, and will forever praise you in glory and awe."
Think we all agreed a deal could happen before the 31st, we just didn't think it'd be for the max if it was done by then. So feel free to pat LT on the back, but it wont be because he was right.
Rick F,
Dude, I'm a kobe homer till the day he retires. But it jus aint right to say the CP3 or LBJ's of this world ain't earning their pay. Those are mvp caliber players and in a league where odom can command 11mil and bynum 14 mil. Saying a bonafide superstud like King james who earned 13+ mil last season is nothing short of ridiculous.
Laker Nation,
Two wins but woah slow down on all the love fest ... since when does blowing out 2 teams that didn't make the playoffs generate this much hysteria ... I picked this team to break 72 but I'll save my excitement for when the likes of New Orleans, Houston and Boston get a beat down at our hands ... still though, moi is more than willing to admit that they've aced the easy tests the season has presented thus far ...
Posted by: Taliq | October 30, 2008 at 11:34 AM
I agree that the Lakers should make a push for LeBron in 2010. He's obviously interested in moving to a big city, so why not LA? Can you imagine a lineup featuring Kobe, LeBron, and Bynum? That could be better than the 90's Bulls. When Kobe's game starts declining in a few years, LeBron could become the main man on the team.
Of course, we would have to clear a lot of cap space. The Lakers would have to first let LO walk. Since Pau is signed beyond 2010, he would have to either be traded for an expiring contract or involved in a sign and trade with the Cavs for LeBron in 2010. This would be the kind of bold move that Jerry Buss could make.

AK,
So even though it forces bloggers into a small window during games and some of us don't like it, have "we" completely decided to stick with the new live blog box format? I'd personally like a community vote or discussion. Polling those who are using it seems like a biased sample. Some of us had checked out specifically because we did not enjoy using the new format.

Hey guys,
I was just thinking about the Bynum situation with the deadline coming up tomorrow. What a pleasant surprise. Honestly, I knew that the Lakers would do the right thing. Mitch has proven that he is the smartest and best GM in the league because of his knowledge of "player value" and his patience as most fans were going nutz for the "Kobe" years leading up to the Gasol trade.
I don't think L.O. will be back with this team next year. I thinks it going to be a bit like the Turiaf situation where they'd generally like to keep him but not at "that" price.
I must admit, its a little different for me. There is really nothing to argue about with anyone on the blog so when I read it I have nothing to post, LOL! I'm just glad we didn't trade Bynum or Kobe and that we'll get that ring after some tough years of watching teams like the Heat win.
What we have now is simply the most complete team in the league with everything it takes to win the homecourt advantage and win the championship. This is the main reason that I became a Lakers fan. The Lakers are the best franchise in sports, period.
Peace, guys!

In fairness to those who disagreed with your "Bynum max deal/close to max deal" is coming talk, you're omitting or ignoring a crucial piece of the equation.
An equally big (if not "main") reason the Lakers agreed to this deal is because it's only for three guaranteed years (with the fourth in their hands), as opposed to five. And for less money than the max dollars. What was signed ended up considerably different than what Team Bynum was reportedly insisting upon. The Lakers clearly saw the risk of locking themselves into the longest/biggest possible deal as every bit the risk of "letting Drew become a free agent." If the terms hadn't been dramatically shifted, they'd have risked a restricted FA situation.

I am not Butler. I have not mentioned anything pertaining to the Suns or any put down to the great Laker Team.
Because you like to make "Snout" comments on everybody such as your fake praise for Laker Tom.
But when someone throws it back at you, you resort to thinking I am Butler.
The funny thing is you will be the "Do not respond to Butler Troll" guy but reply to him consistently. With your logic thinking I am Butler, you are still replying.
Another Example of that: "Nevermind. I'm sure you're already lost. Starve the troll.

Johnny-
I'm not entirely sure I understand what you're asking about in reference to the "small box." Do you mean to type? If so, I'm not sure if that can be expanded or not. Regarding being forced to type in short sentences, that shouldn't be the case. Having operated on both ends of the thing, you ought to be able to comment at whatever length you want, including in multiple sentences.
As AK said, most people are indifferent or seem to like the newer format. There are some advantages for us, as well, in how it's executed. Not everyone will (not everyone likes anything) but generally speaking, when we do something that really upsets people, we get a ton of mail.

LakerTom,
"Even those who wrongly claimed there was no risk. I think this proved for once and all that the Lakers were not going to let Drew become a free agent of any kind, restricted or unrestricted. Period"
Not at all. The issue was whether or not the Lakers would feel that it was worth signing Bynum to a maximum-length, no incentives, maximum salary contract to avoid the very slight chance that Bynum would become a free agent.
While this contract does not answer that question, the very strong implication is that the answer is no, because clearly Bynum and his agent wanted the max, and clearly the Lakers did not offer them the max.
Posted by: exhelodrvr | October 30, 2008 at 12:04 PM
Kobe can make his freethrows...enough said.
This means one thing...we have to cut down on everyone else. As in goodbye Lamar. Thank you for your expiring contract.

Very good point. Isn't it funny how "Pay him the max, Pay him now, Don't hurt his feelings", turned into "I was right all along."
Regarding your comment on the salary cap:
"Dude we get it, we're loaded and we'll probably have to lose some of our talent based on the economics ..."

AK/BK
I know, I referred to the vote. It was a very biased sample. Let me explain again.
Some folks (I don't know how many) probably did not vote because they had left due to the annoyance of the new blog.
It is akin to asking people after a double feature with two admittedly similar films if they liked the second one and then saying 90% of people loved the second movie.
This conclusion is erroneous because it ignores people who did not stay for the second movie. Does that make sense?
Even within those who did stay, a percentage said they did not like it. If you add them to those who left, we do not know the results.
I only pester because this is a large decision.
I guess though, since no one is seconding my concerns that I may be in the minority. But, even if I'm in the minority, is something that seems like an improvement for some worth the cost of possibly losing some participants like myself?
One last thought. One way to check popularity is to use it during one game and not the next and compare numbers of posters. Notice you cannot compare last year and this year because the lakers are now garnering more love. This would give you a more solid indication than asking folks who use it if they prefer it.
Is it worth an experiment? I, personally like the scientific method. But if you're so sold you don't want to use it, I understand.
Thanks, and

Ex,
Exactly. No one said "don't sign Bynum by the end of the week." We said he has yet to have earned the max and considering that they didn't give him the max deal Bynum and Lee wanted, it's clear the Lakers felt the same way.
Anyway this is a good day. Bynum is re-signed and for a reasonable price that works for both parties.

OKAY,
So you guys know that I'm a certified, card-carrying, Purple-and-Gold Homer. So, I've been intentionally quite as the Lakers completely blew the doors off two WAY inferior teams. One of the two completely depleted by injuries.
I'm trying to curb my enthusiasm.
But, DAMN do they look good! However, I really want to reserve judgment until they have to swing through Texas. That will be a real test.
Portland disappointed me. I thought they would put up more of a fight. No matter what Baron says (and I LOVE Baron), the Clippers are the Clippers.
At any rate, I'm writing because I am so happy the Bynum;s deal is done. And, they finished it a whole day early - minimizing the undue drama.
Cool move. I'm happy. I'm enthusiastic. I'm happy. Way to go team!

The 6th man of the year award goes to a player that primarily comes off the bench, not necessarily the first guy off the bench.
I see Jordan being a much more worthy recipient than Lamar for that award. Heart, effort, and some positively beautiful hops will give JF his best statistical season as a pro and have the biggest impact off the bench for the best team in the association.
Talent has taken Lamar as far as he'll ever get (and wouldn't we all kill to get there?), but these are the friggin LA Lakers! There are no awards for throwing a fun party. No accolades for making a spectacular move because you are one of a handful of people on the planet capable of making it. The only thing you can count on with Lamar is that you can't count on him. As long as the Basketball Gods are kind and spare us any serious injuries, your 2008-09 Lakers will never have to.
Jordan Farmar = 6th Man of the Year
Lamar = Those also receiving votes for 6th Man of the Year and future Salary Cap Casualty

Dear copenhagen laker and all the lovely fambam,
Since copenhagen laker brought up the name, I have one poll question.
Assuming Memphis does not pick up Javaris Crittenton's option: Would you sign him for cheap if he would want to come back?
Farmar and Javaris would be great PG's as 2 & 3. And both have plus' because of their skill set. Sun can be a 2-3 guard/forward option assuming he pans out. (Big Assumption)
Best,
Posted by: Charles | October 30, 2008 at 12:28 PM
The Bynum signing is good for both sides. If Bynum proves himself out, the Lakers have shown they will pay their superstars so that's not a concern for the future. If Bynum turns out to be injury prone, the Lakers took on ALL the risk concerning this for a reasonable period of time so... much better than giving out the max.
There's 3 guys we REALLY need to keep, Farmar, Ariza and Odom so we'll see how that plays out.
also, Lebron ain't coming to the Lakers, how could he ever be "the man" with Kobe here?

THE LAKERS ARE DESPERATE,THEY KNOW THEIR FRONTLINE PACKS NO DEFENSIVE TOUGHNESS,AND THEIR BACKCOURT IS SUSPECT, WITH OLD D FISH AND YOUNG FARMAR, THEY STILL NEED A LARRY HUGHES TYPE BIG POINT GUARD TO DEAL WITH THE D.WILLIAMS.
