Handle the rock, Lamar

October 2, 2008 | 12:24 am

Lamar_and_pj Phil Jackson has never been afraid to tinker in the preseason.  Last year, he experimented with Kobe Bryant as a push pace facilitator in the pretend games, only to abandon the idea once the season started.  This year, he's exploring his options with Lamar Odom.  Rather than place him at the three -- which folks were expecting -- PJ has Odom running the point, initiating the offense and trying to take advantage of ball-handling abilities extremely unique for a player of his size.  In this configuration, Derek Fisher moves to the two, Bryant to the three.  How long it lasts is anyone's guess, but for now, as you'd expect, the results have been mixed.

Writes the LAT's Mike Bresnahan:

"...The concept, if it sticks, has its pros and cons.

Odom, 6 feet 10, could post up smaller point guards, though the team would lose some of his offensive rebounding if he stayed out on the perimeter.

Also, there would be a litany of switching on defense, with Odom picking up the opposing small forward, Bryant guarding the opponent's shooting guard and Fisher picking up the point guard.
.."

Given how fluid positional responsibilities can be in the triangle, there's nothing inherently wrong with the idea.  It plays to many of LO's natural tendencies as a player, particularly in ball distribution.  The biggest negative might be the time lost in camp should the experiment fail and Odom be pushed back to the three.  That ginormous front court will need time to come together, though probably less than that required to do what they're doing now.  Should it work, the Lakers will present a very unique set of matchup problems for the opposition.

In the end, the Lakers simply have too many potential combinations available to not take a few out for a test drive, and there's no time like the preseason to get it done.  It's definitely something to watch as October passes.

Jon K - love your tall trees, or as I call it, the tall fence offense, haha.

More seriously, I'd agree with Guilty that it's a shakeup move - you're not going to want L.O. initiating the offense that often. He'll already take the ball up the floor here and there and it works best when there's some element of surprise - if he gets in the right flow he can go coast-to-coast but I wouldn't want skilled point guards keying on him regularly.

Mamba24 - your bandwagon's starting to smoke again - throw me into the coal car!

lol Mamba.

I actually like this "tweak." My greatest fear of course is if the opponent makes him go right. Oh no! lol.

I'm starting to think that LO at the 3 may not be the best for the team...simply because at the 3 he would show off his tendency to shoot unwise 3s. Added to the fact that he's a better rebounder at the 4 than the 3, well it's something to think about lol. But the other side of the coin...is a knock-out lineup. Not to mention seeing LO make the small 3s pay with his length (at the paint, back to the basket nice!), playing awesome (Tayshaun like defense if he so wants) at the 3. He's certainly got the length for it.

I don't know about all this talk about LO playing point guard and finally reaching his potential.

PJ should stick to his plan of making him a 6th man. Not for scoring punch, but for adding a rebounder who can run the break and finish if Farmar will be the "Pusha." (A nod to LTLF for the nickname)

If Paul will play back up to Bynum and Lamar can play PF for the 2nd unit, that will keep him on the boards which was the only consistent thing with Lamar.

Playing time should be the concern and quality of minutes. If you're going to play 36-38 minutes, it shouldn't matter whether you start or not. Space cadet started, but did he finish the closing minutes? It's what's best for the team.

With that said, I believe they should try the Tree's line up and let Lamar prove he can play the SF. If it doesn't work, then be a part of the bench mob playing closer minutes.

it's not a question of if itll work, it's if it'll work better than the myriad other ways we can dominate.

LO driving from the perimeter is a charge waiting to happen - if for no other reason than he'll probably be mowing smaller players over - we saw it time and time again in the playoffs. Stupid offensive fouls that were momentum killers. I can also recall Hubie Brown saying over and over how LO "lays himself out" at the basket every time he drives looking for fouls instead of finishing the play.

I get it - they're trying to make it work. Let's hope they do and don't all of a sudden become focused on keeping LO happy to the detriment of the team.

Remember, PJ's plan isn't to make LO the sixth man, it's to start him. Plan B is LO coming off the bench, as it was expressed to us on Friday.

BK you said

"As it is today, I see the current "LO as sixth man" thing, whether he'll accept it or not, etc. to be putting the cart ahead of the horse, and something of an early training camp media story for a team without much else to talk about. PJ already said they'll only go that direction if what they want to do with him as a starter doesn't work. Cross that bridge when they get there".

I agree with this statement wholeheartedly...........but the question is .........Who created ths story? Who created this story on Day 1 about bringing L.O. off the bench?

Who began the "decreasing Kobe's minutes because he's "old" question?

I agree with you that all of these things are putting the cart before the horse.......these bridges should not be talked about but crossed when and if we get to them.

So my question to you is........what has been the SOURCE of all these stories thus far?

As a matter of fact who has been the source of MOST of the banter in years past?

Whether it is like last years statement of " I walked by Kobe's locker and all his stuff was cleaned out"...........or this years statement that "Vlad Rad didn't want to get hurt during pick up games"

All of these "issues" come right back to some statement by the one and only Phil Jackson

This MOFO is like a seasoned politician that makes statements to create diversions from what the real issues are..........like

What adjustments will you make in your practice schedule to include........I don't know...........DEFENSE?

What adjustments if any can you make within the triangle to exploit matchups..........since you are not accustomed to calling plays or isos from the bench?

What can you do to improve as a coach?

Why is Luke Walton on this team?

...........you know.......stuff like that!

http://tinyurl.com/3jd4f3

We can have this all year long with LO running the point.
I say make it so!!!

BK,

I pretty much agree with what you are saying. As you said, the root of all issues surrounding LO is whether or not he can play with the KGB (Kobe, Gasol, and Bynum), regardless of whether he is a starter or not.

Compounding that is the abundance of small forwards with unique and almost mutually exclusive talent sets. With the 4 other positions set, are Lamar's talents the best for the game or situation at hand? Or will Ariza's defense and slashing, Vlad's shooting, or Luke's passing be more important at that point?

Like you said, cross that bridge when we get to it, but it'll be an interesting road too it.

Brian Kamenetzky,

Thanks for the reply. I post on food and music blogs and the moderators never if not hardly reply back. I most definitely appreciate the time you take.

"With that said, I believe they should try the Tree's line up and let Lamar prove he can play the SF. If it doesn't work, then be a part of the bench mob playing closer minutes."

pfunk -

I think it's time to move on. We know you don't like Phil or his coaching methods. There are many other issues, which you're obviously intelligent enough to discuss. The One Note Samba worked for Brasil 66, but I don't think the tune suits you well.

pfunk-

To answer the parts of your post that were questions (or at least quasi-questions), regarding the LO situation, it was the media who asked PJ, and PJ who answered, and his answer was pretty clear. We're going to work with Lamar as a starter, and if that doesn't work, there are possibilities to do other things.

While I think there are many times (and here we likely agree) that PJ intentionally stirs up the pot via the media, sometimes unnecessarily, this is one where I think the scribes are doing most of the early stirring, looking for subplots on a team without a whole lot of big stuff to discuss.

The point he was trying to emphasize is that everyone is going to have to make some sacrifices on a team with this much talent, whether in minutes, role, or whatever. I don't see that as a bad message.

As for Kobe, I think you're totally overreacting to what he said. It's not like they're planning on sitting Kobe for long stretches. Paying attention to his practice time and in-game minutes and shortening them where possible is exactly what they did last season. It worked out fine, I'd say.

They'll look to buy him time during games, in practice (Kobe is often off the court during late practice scrimmages and running) and wherever they can with the idea of keeping him strong and healthy through the season. Last year, Kobe averaged nearly 39 minutes a game. With more depth this year, if they could get that figure down to 37 or so, that could make a big difference late in the year, and help keep him healthy and strong. But it's not like they're going to tank games just to hold Kobe to 25 minutes a night. I really don't see the downside. Kobe said himself that he doesn't either, calling finding ways to reduce his minutes "a goal every year."

BK

" ...a great defensive team like the celtics or SUNS..."
Have I been asleep for a decade? When exactly did the funs become a great defensive team. Hell, they're not even an average defensive team.
I think the reason butler spends so much time here is because there is NO HOPE in funs land, with The Next Lakers Dynasty hanging over them like the Sword of Damocles.
Watch and learn, butler, the Lakers will show you how to play as a favorite, how to fullfill, nay, exceed high expectations, something the funs and their WNBA point guard could never do. Understand, RESISTANCE IS FUTILE. All the hot air about great defense, shaq, stephanie nash, etc will not keep you warm this winter while THE NBA'S PREMIER FRANCHISE, YOUR LOS ANGELES LAKERS run away with the west.
But never fear. If you behave, maybe the blog will pitch in and buy you a Kobe jersey for Christmas. Become a Laker fan kid, it's not too late to save yourself. Then you can finally know what it's like to win a title.

It's training camp.

Woohoo!!! The Era of the Beast has arrived!

Go Lakers!

I feel like I'm binging with all this laker news.

Slow down AK/BK lol.

Lamar isnt good enough to be a crybaby. Dont crumble under pressure, and maybe then I'll have patiene for your attitude.

Drew is a redwood. He towers over other trees and plays where the sun always shines. Other teams unfortunately are the ones with the struggling maples and oaks, like fat Shaq.

Tom

Jesterguru,

Hell, why not make it an 98-win bandwagon – 82 + 16 in playoffs. According to Mike T. logic, we would then usurp every other bandwagon with less than 98 wins. LOL.

Tom

LakerTom,

Wow. Designing his own knee brace?

Skyhook?

Left-handed shot?

Wow.

Ummm... we're going to devastate other teams this year. Man, I'd hate to have to be the Oklahoma City Thunder and play us. Their coach is probably nervously eyed the date we play them already and thinking, "What the hell am I supposed to do? I wonder if our fans would be angry if we forfeited."

GO LAKERS!

Jon,

Better get your favorite seat at your favorite Cleveland bar reserved for the season. Somehow we managed to make it through the off season. Amazing.

I get the experimentation angle, but put me with Troll Man, Wes and others who do not like this idea of LO "initating the offense" for the following reasons:

1. Though he handles the ball reasonably well for a PF, I do not consider him a good ball handler - certainly not PG quality

2. Though his outside shot is not bad for a PF, he doesn't have a good outside shot for a SF or PG. Simply put, he is much more effective as a scorer in the paint than he is on the perimeter

3. I don't think this creates any match-up problems that don't exist playing him at the 3. Do we think the opponent will be checking LO with their PG just because he happens to be bringing the ball up the court ? No. What you're going to see is a lot of half court traps resulting in either turnovers or someone else bringing the ball up anyway. I also don't think he will get much practice against that in exhibition games. Opponents aren't going to practice that much in exhibition games, but when they count they will.

4. Lastly, though he may like distributing the ball and involving others - again, he is not good at it from the perimeter. He is a good interior passer, not someone who makes good entry passes into the post.

oooh....I knew I goofed as i wuz closin computer....not huey lewis, so had to look it up, timbuk 3.....sorry....
