Kobe surprises by saying no to surgery
Well, after months of waiting, speculation, and wondering, Kobe Bryant has announced the date for his pinkie surgery: A week from "Not Happening."
On his official website, Kobe provides the following explanation:
"I have always felt that I can still focus and play at a high level even through various injuries. Thatss (sic) really just part of the game. When the doctors told me recovery from a procedure could be 12 weeks, I just decided now was not the time to have surgery. What it really came down to for me is that I just didn't want to miss any time 'punching the clock' for the Lakers, given all we are trying to accomplish as a team this NBA season. I am just really excited and looking forward to being there with the guys when camp opens in a few weeks. That is a real bonding process and if I can avoid being on the sidelines for that, God willing, I will."
I must say, this particular turn of events threw me for a loop. I can't say I'm wild about the decision.
I get why Kobe doesn't want to miss any camp and I actually think it's terrific that he values so deeply that time on and off the court. But from a purely practical standpoint that recognizes an uncertain future, I'd much rather him be "on the sidelines," as he puts it, during October basketball than a stretch when the games actually count toward the 2008-2009 season. It's certainly not a stretch to worry that Kobe could take a hit to the finger that forces him to go under the knife. I voted for Kobe to have the operation back in February and as it turned out, my fears along these lines weren't realized. But I still think there's only so far you can go trying to push this particular brand of luck.
I don't question Kobe's threshold for playing through pain (a very solid argument can be made that he's the NBA's toughest player), but he's still human and fresh aggravation to the digit could be a lot to deal with. It's also in Kobe's nature to become motivated by the garden variety "It could be really tough to pull this off" challenge and if that's the case, this would be one unnecessarily met.
I appreciate the dedication to all parts of the upcoming season, but I would personally rather him take the safest possible route, even if it means missing a camp where he can still make his presence felt in a leadership capacity.
Which brings us to the Question of the Day: Do you now wish that Kobe had declined to participate with Team USA?
Had the trip to China been bypassed, Kobe would have been able to have the surgery and recuperate in plenty of time for the season. Playing for America cut down the recovery time available before camp, which prompted his surprise decision. Personally, I don't have a problem with Kobe having gone for the gold. For starters, it's a huge honor and often a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as you never know when injuries could make you unable to participate. Plus, I see the issues as separate. Kobe could have played and gotten the surgery, since I think it's wisest for him to, if need be, miss camp. But if you see it as an either/or scenario, do you think Kobe picked the wrong "either?" Or the wrong "or," depending on which side of the slash symbol you honor?

LAKER TRUTH,
The LA Galaxy is only paying a small fraction of Beckham's salary. I'm pretty sure that Adidas or some other corporate sponsor is paying the VAST majority of Beckham's deal. The only reason they put that $250 million dollar tag on it is for marketing purposes.
The only way someone is going to be getting paid 50 big ones a year to play basketball is if there is a similar deal where a shoe/apparel company is paying most of the deal, and why would they do that when they have a guy playing in the second largest media market already? It's not going to happen, these Euro teams are already barely turning profits as it is. Even with the expected rise in interest with a Kobe joining a team, there's no way they'd be able to survive paying him that much.
Now, could I see a 38 or 39 year old Kobe going over to Italy to play ball like his pop did? Yeah, but he won't be getting paid $50 million.

REPOST WITH ADDITIONS
Ah Hugo boss er KBBlitz
(yes Colorado loves the Lakers! Glad to hear from you)
"To present them as defensive specialists brought in and then ignored is way off base."
[No they were the best defensive players available at the time and just because you don't think much of them don't mean they could not have helped. And you are missing Mitch’s rational for signing them]
Same here. If they were defensive specialists why haven't they been resigned?? They are no Bruce Bowen or Marcus Camby. The logic to say Phil is a dumb coach (no you didn't say that but you are implying, a trick I learned during my debates with Hobbitmage)
[ Wordy post but I will try to get thruogh the point without all the useless banter. Really don't care what you learned from debates with Hobbitmage. But your words PJ is dumb but I definitely agree with you there. Also refrain from trying to put words in my mouth.]
just because he didn't play your boys Ira and DJ is just as weak as KL's argument about it's all Kobe's fault for the world coming to an end.
[ Let me state quite emphatically that Ira and DJ are not my boys but when they wear the purple and gold I support them even if zen man does not]
Doc Rivers is a poor coach only having KG/Ray Allen/and Paul Pierce is why he even won the finals (the Celtics had the last 2 years of losing records before). If you want to say Doc Rivers is a better coach than PJ then you have to say he's a better coach than Poppovich and even Pat Riley all proven winners. Just like I said to KL, if you want to believe Phil Jackson is the worst coach (you are implying,) in the NBA then so be it. Just don't give us other fans some really poor logic that Ira Newble is a defensive king and DJ Mbenga is some David Robinson guy.
[ Seriously you need to read my posts better. I never said Ira or DJ are defensive kings but I did say they both could have helped in spurts. I never implied PJ was the worst coach I am saying is methods are out dated and have worn off. I also detest his methods of insulting his players in the press.Andrew Bynum said it best with PJ passing out books. Bynum said he should get PJ a book How to Coach Big Men for Dummies.
Also I said Doc outcoached PJ and for that series he was the better coach. I never said a thing about Pop or Riley or any one else. For that matter DanCryatoni outcoached PJ for those Sun series. Asd I remeber Suns won those series. There is a contract offer to DJ but he is trying to get a bigger pay day from Miami. PJ would surely not want Ira back and would sit him if resirned like he did last season. Thats PJ saying FU Mitch and Jerry. Besides Ira is no longer needed, as Trevor is healthy now. As far as Doc Rivers winning because he had KG, PP and Ray Allen only supports my contention the only reason PJ has 9 rings is because he had MJ, Pip, Kobe and Shaq. ]
Oh and Phil was the only thing that made Kobe back off his trade request. (Nah uh blitz you are wrong Phil was doing other things, I hate Phil Jackson!!!).
"LOS ANGELES — Believing he had been insulted and misled, Kobe Bryant asked the Los Angles Lakers for a trade Wednesday and insisted nothing could change his mind.
Then something did. He spoke with coach Phil Jackson and backed off his request.
“I don’t want to go anywhere, this is my team,” Bryant told KLAC radio. “I love it here. I called Phil, man, he and I talked, it was an emotional conversation, but he just said, ‘You know what, Kobe? Let us try to figure this thing out.’
“Phil is a guy I lean on a lot.”"
http://tinyurl.com/6yope8
I'm sure Kobe disagrees with you pretty much.
{ Don't know about that}

[Again you ignore past posts. Kobe says what is expedient at the time and to save face gracefully. Simply put or over simply put.
Kobe -I want to be a Laker for life.
Kobe trade me, flip flopping several times depending on interview.
Kobe I want to be a Laker for life.
Kobe - I would take 40 million to play in Europe especially Italy.
Which Kobe do you want to believe?
I think Kobe is the best player in the league but what he says is not necessarily what he means.
I can give more statements but I hope you see the point.]

Laker Truth,
The power of Euro is based on many countries in Europe versus the power of dollar that is USA alone. Beckham was taken by Galaxy b/c AEG Enterprises & Mr. Anschutz, the billionaire invested much to popularize soccer in America. They own two soccer teams plus several other teams including minority owner of the Lakers and Home Depot Center plus Staples. In the Euro Basket, there is no entity that has that kind of high profile not Tau Ceramica or CSKA Moscow, so for them to pay Kobe or LBJ 50M, there has to be a consortium of teams similar to Euro dollar. Secondly, any team who invest that much on one player would surely loss revenues b/c stadiums and crowds are small compared to US stadiums. There are about 100+ games here including playoffs compared to short season in the Euro League. Besides, you can ask any of blogger in this site who resides in Europe whether any European team can afford to pay an American import 50M or 35M Euro per year. By their standards and traditions even in Great Britain, they don't spend much or consume food like the Americans. LOL!

Kobe,
Get the surgery!
Not only does it affect his shooting, we've all seen how his ball-hanlding suffers. He now looses the ball on average about twice a game due to that finger.
This is not to say that I think he should have the surgery because he would shoot better or have better handles. My point is that it is obviously bad enough to affect him, and is therefore something that shouldn't be ignored.
Plus, long term, what if he tries to compensate for those things and strains/injures something else? He is attempting to accommodate an injury over a two-year period.
That could seriously back-fire.
In this regard, we need Kobe to be just a little more selfish...
Never thought you'd hear someone say that, did ya'?

Fearless
This is a tough call. At this point I see what you are saying and it makes sense. On the other hand I hope with the return of AB and Pau at his natural position then hopefully we can use and rely less on Kobe and extend his career.
Still though tough call either way.

Let Kobe make the decision. He's so mentally tough that he can totally ignore his dangling appendage.
Just hope it's not a Shawn Merriman deal.
So, yes he should've gone to Beijing and, yes, he's making the right decision. The clock is ticking before he can opt-out. tick-tock, tick-tock.

Kobe here in the Italian championship, maybe in Milan's basketball team?
At first sight, it looks very unlikely.
But, let's consider that:
1) Kobe grew up in Italy, and he often goes back there;
2) Milan is the international capital of fashion, and the guy (and his wife, I imagine) loves to be well dressed;
3) the new owner of Milan's basketball team is Giorgio Armani.. I think everyone knows him.. He's always in search for new athlets to be testimonial of his firm;
4) Mr. Armani, even if is says the opposite, has a lot of money to spend in basketball affairs;
6) Kobe hasd turned 30, and how long would he be so brilliant as an athlet?
7) Sometimes, as Julius Ceaser said centuries ago, it's better to be the first in the smalltown than the second or the third in the big city.;
8) I remember, month ago, an article where the writer said that Kobe is mentally an "european person"...

Good or Bad news for Our Team?... only time will tell, hope things will work out well for both. Personally, I would have wanted Kobe to get the surgery and come back 100% but Kobe has made his choice. The Lakers support Kobe so I guess I do too.

LakerTom sez:
"One of the most fascinating things about last season was how many players on the team had the best years of their careers, starting with Kobe, Drew, Lamar, Sasha, Jordan, and Trevor. Taking his history into consideration, you could easily make a case for this being Pau’s best year, too."
It's all downhill from last season!
The SUNS are quietly becoming the best team in the Western Conference this summer and will feature the 2009 MVP (and Finals MVP?) at power forward: AMARE!
Yes, AMARE!
The lakers will be decent but won't have the physicality to stand up to the tougher, bigger, stronger teams in the NBA such as Cleveland, Boston, the SUNS and Blazers.
Bynumb and odum and gasol are a nice trio of offensive-minded playas, but they lack cohesion and chemistry, and where are their backups? That's a mighty thin bench in the frontcourt...
The window is closing fast and Boston demands more competitive play in the 2009 Finals - and that's where SHACK and AMARE and the SUNS come in!
Posted by: BUTLER | September 10, 2008 at 06:27 AM
Isn't this all about kobee being jealous of the attention that SHACK got?
kobee led the lakers to the Finals, but SHACK still ended up getting the attention afterwards. It's like SHACK'S big shadow is always looming over staples center...
I mean, what if SHACK had been in the lineup instead of gasal?

Unlike Shawn Merriman, the pinky isn't as bad as a knee. If it was a knee then Kobe for sure would have probably had surgery and could have possibly missed the Olympics (like he did the 2006 tournament).

BUTLER,
"I mean, what if SHACK had been in the lineup instead of gasal?"
We would have gotten swept instead of losing in six games because at this point in their careers Gasol is a much better player than Shaq.
Actually, we wouldn't have even made it to the Finals if we had Snaq.

I wonder, did kg, allen and pierce make doc rivers look like a better coach than he really is? Laker players played very well last season, but I don't believe it was because Phil was their coach. Just b/c Phil has 9 ring and sits in the position to make the calls for the Lakers doesn't make them good calls all the time. Many times last season Phil sat on the bench with a lost look in eyes while the team was getting a spurt beat down. Well, guess what if he looked lost, it was b/c he really was lost and really didn't know how to deal with situation. there's no genius plan behind the no time out Phil rule, that's just Phil hoping that Kobe and the rest of the players bail him out of the situation.
I just You Tubed the kwame getting booed video and for 8 to 9 minutes Phil just sat there with a blank look on his face and did nothing , oh ya he wanted kwame to learn from this expierenc. For Hall of Fame Week, they've been playing a lot of old vintage footage on the tube.
I saw a replay of the '95 Western Conf. Finals with Dream vs Robinson. Dream had issues and decided to kill Robinson. Using what I just learned, I decided to enbarress a friend of mine that I've been playing one-on-one with lately.
On an out of bounds play, I checked the ball in from the left sideline. Dribbling right, I ran straight for him, juked him and showed him the ball to raise his aggression. He bit. I waited for him to go for the ball, where I crossed him left and got the step. He recovered nicely and posted me up. A fake up and under "Dream Shake" going to my right got him up into the air. Using my pivot, I spun to the left baseline, where I easily layed the ball in the basket!
My friend is Paul Pierce...
Thanks Hakeem!!!!!!!!

Magia32,
The way I look at it, we were weak in the 2nd string, when two or three players takes the rest and Walton, Farmar, Sasha and Turiaf comes in as replacement, somehow we were not competitive to the defensive players of Celtics from Posey, Powe, PJ Brown, House. I don't have any statistics to back it up but somehow based on mere watching the playoffs our lead diminishes in the 2nd Q or 3rd. With the team assembled by Mitch this year, there are plenty of players that could beef up the 2nd team either lurking in the D'League , so Phil has a lot of inventories who can play good basketball.
Have anyone of you read Mike Kahn comments on Kobe?

Xodus / Edwin,
" these Euro teams are already barely turning profits as it is. Even with the expected rise in interest with a Kobe joining a team, there's no way they'd be able to survive paying him that much."
I would've said the exact same thing about Bekham and the MLS before the deal was signed, but it happened. I would also argue that Kobe is worth more to a Euro league than Bekham has been and will be to MLS.
Kobe does not have the negative label overseas that he has here in the States. In Europe, corporate sponsors would be lining up to associate themselves with the league that Kobe joins. Couple that with an explosion in league exposure WORLDWIDE, television ratings (telecasts could possibly expand to Asia, all of Europe, as well as the U.S.), ticket prices and worldwide merchandising, and the numbers could possibly work. Just think that Josh Childress will be making $7 million a year to do nothing else but play basketball. For basketball alone, Kobe is worth at least three four times that amount. But Kobe's duties would be much more than just basketball, i.e. attracting sponsors, being the ambassador of basketball in Europe, expanding the league, etc. I'm just sayin, the numbers could work.
Posted by: LAKER TRUTH | September 10, 2008 at 10:54 AM
mitchell (aka LakerTruth),
"So we both agree that Kobe did a "good job" last season, as well as the threepeat years. It's Kobe's performance in the years in between that we have always disagreed upon."
i've always said, even in the "KLBeast" days, that i was a kobe fan up until about 2003 when kobe wanted to be the "man" in LA. what he's done since 2003 has been marginal given (emphasis on "given") the circumstances.
sure, kobe led a bunch of scrubs to the playoffs (2005-2007), but you have to see it from the POV that had kobe played his cards right, he'd be competing with jordan's legacy with shaq as a sidekick. i concede shaq can be a kb*iatch, but the dude was still good from 2005-2006 and could still be productive as a laker now.
you have to remember, i'm holding the kobe and shaq to magic and kareem's laker legacy.
in either case, the past is the past and let's not dwell. 2005-2007 taught kobe some lessons which was, in my most humble opinion, the reason for the "Kobe NV " in 2008.
we can agree.
btw, we had some fun (facetious) exchanges during the "KLBeast" days eh? i forgot your original sceenname.
take care bro.

Laker Truth,
I think we have exhausted the explanations why it can't happen? Anyway, let's see whether it will happen in the future. Let the case rest for a while.
With regards to corporate or country sponsor, you know which country that could pay 50M just to promote Basketball, not a european country but it will be China or Dubai. LOL!

Mamba24,
"You forget how tight the race was until the very last
day we would not even had made it to the playoffs."
You often ignore your indefatigable efforts in your hellraising posts and bandwagon that woke up this blog. I think it was Mamba24 that pushed players and fans to the limits of their ability. Vlad made those dashing shots on the sides while Walton was dizzying opponents on where he is going and passing. If these players slept during the last weeks of the season when there was no Bynum, no Pau, then we may not have taken the #1 slot in the West. I give full credits to Mamba24 and Larry in paticular during his wakeup hours before going to work.
