Missing pieces, and an injured dude: Media Day audio and quote pulls

Andrew_bynum The Lakers, as you may have heard, played the Finals at less than full strength.  Trevor Ariza was limited coming back from foot problems, and Andrew Bynum was in a suit on the sidelines.  Both are back, both are healthy and confident in the state of their once-injured body parts, and the expectation is the two of them will make a significant difference in the Lakers' fortunes.  I happen to agree.  Bynum provides a big body inside and a shot blocking presence on the defensive end along with a handy option on the other end, while Ariza is one of the team's better wing defenders (and, he notes, spent the summer working on his shot).  Click below for some audio from both Ariza and Bynum.

One guy who isn't all the way back is Luke Walton, still recovering from offseason surgery on his right ankle.  He's working out, but thinks it could be a couple weeks before he's participating fully in practice.  It's time away Walton knows won't benefit him as the Lakers sort out the rotation on a very deep roster, but there's not much that can be done.  Last season he was never healthy, and we all saw the results. Walton has much to prove this year.

Click below for the audio and quotes.

Audio:

  • Trevor Ariza (no question, he's excited about being at full health and having a chance to play big minutes on a high quality team, something he's wanted since his career began): Download trevor_ariza_media_day.mp3
  • Andrew Bynum (interesting words about the lessons of watching, and the defensive disorganization against the Celtics that cost them- a lack of discipline that they plan to correct this season):  Download andrew_bynum_media_day.mp3

Quotes:

Luke Walton:

  • "It's about two weeks before I'll be able to do full practices."
  • On missing camp: "It sucks to miss it, because there's so much you get done in training camp, as far as getting back into NBA shape, playing with the guys, building that bond again.  That's what I'm going to miss the most.  As far as the offense, I've been here for enough years that I know that pretty well, so I don't think I'm going to miss out on that part.  But just being out there, going through the rotations, (missing) all that stuff is going to be tough."
  • On the emphasis on defense: "That's the goal of training camp.  We're going to be doing new things, working on different type of rotations.  And the best way to learn is just repetition.  I'll be on the sidelines watching, but until you get out there and start doing the drills every day, I'll be a little bit behind.  It sucks (more me, in terms of competing for PT).  We've got a deep team.  We've got guys who can play multiple positions, we've got a lot of guys who have performed in the NBA before.  It's going to be a lot of competition for playing time, so to be out early is a little disadvantage.  But hopefully they know what I can do, and once I get in shape and my ankle gets strong enough I'll be able to contribute and help this team."
  • On defensive emphasis: "The advantage this year is we have pretty much the same team.  With the triangle offense, whenever you have new guys you have to spend so much of training camp going through it, because if one guy on the court doesn't know what he's doing, it messes up the entire offense.  With everyone pretty much coming back, we can focus on other stuff such as defense.  The sooner we put it in and start working on it, you start using those philosophies in preseason games, and you get that practice at it.  That's when you really develop those skills."
  • On time spent on D: "Last year, we spent the most time on defense since I've been here.  This year, I'm assuming from what the coaches are saying that we're even going to spend more time on that.  I'm excited.  I love playing for a good defensive team. At Arizona, we used to start every practice with a good half an hour of it.  It was boring, but when the game comes, you know where your guys are going to be.  It makes a difference, and I'm excited about it."
  • On Boston's D: "We feel that's why they beat us.  They played better defense, they were more consistent on the defensive end.  We were a good defensive team.  We had enough talent and size and mobility to do a lot of things on defense, but we weren't consistent enough.  From one game to the next, we weren't stopping people.  We met Boston in the Finals, and they made it hard for us to get every bucket, and we weren't able to do the same against them."

That is indeed what training camp should be about this year: Defense.

We had already 3 years of learning the triangle offense and plus the Lakers built up CHEMISTRY with each other and got rid of a few bad and negligible pieces:

Bad Pieces Lost (and good riddance):
Brian Cook
Smush Parker
Kwa-may Brown
Aaron McKie

Negligible pieces lost (not good but not bad either):
Maurice (Mo) Evans
Devean George
Ronny Turiaf*
Javaris Crittenton
Draft rights to Marc Gasol (Would have been nice to have kept him, at least he is better than Mihm)

*ok guys I know I might get flak for this but beyond being a great team mate, energy guy, shot blocker, and dancing/cheerleader (something Ronny disliked being called), Ronny really didn't impress much with averages of 5.9ppg and especially 3.8 rpg (excluding his 05-06 year since he came in late in the season). Make no mistake we will definately miss him team mate wise but I really don't think his production will be missed too much.

The Chemistry will only help the Lakers on offense and defense even more (not to mention being healthy).

With the Lakers only need to make a few adjustments offensively like putting Bynum and Gasol together combined with reintegrating Lamar as Small Forward (he was Small Forward back in 2005-2006) not to mention find the best lineups like when to put in Sasha or when to put Lamar at PF and Pau at C. The main thing this training camp which I loved to hear from almost everyone is defense. Personally with Bynum covering the post and Pau more on one on one defending against PF (which he is better at than defending the post) plus Kobe on the perimeter the defense will be great.

Trevor from the bench will help reinforce the perimeter defense and Sasha (better have improved that LATERAL QUICKNESS!!) the perimeter is even more better off.

If Jordan can not wilt this time against the top point guards in the league and at least could get some good steals (he is good at the passing lanes) then we'll be solid there.

Defense will get us that ring.

Hope the K bros enjoyed the Media Day.

-blitz

Hey all we need to do is keep everything in front of us and stay focus. If Ariza has been working on his shot he is the missing piece we have been waiting on in that Ric Fox mold. And Odom could hold down the Toni Kukocs role of the offense coming off the bench.. i know he would not really like to do that out of and ego stand point but with Odom coming off the bench playing Gasol who he has get chemistry with and Bynum in the 2nd unit would give teams fits.

Thanks for ALL the Media Day coverage AK/BK

I haven't read through all the stuff yet but I'm looking forward to opening a beer and start my reading.

Also, don't know if anybody posted this but I saw this picture of Bynumite from today...all I can say

http://lakerforums.com/kobe-ab17.jpg
and here's a picture of him (300 pounder) back then in high school
http://lakerforums.com/young-bynum.jpg

WOW! Bynumite will be a BEAST!!!

AK/BK,

WHAT UP,

Live from Iraq, and glad to be back in the fold. Didnt think I would be able to chime, but technology is a beautiful thing.

Were Mihm and Jordan Farmar there at media day, how did they look? I have heard about Chris looking healthy from Phil, but what is the word on Jordan's summer. He worked super hard last year after we drafted Jarvis, what have you heard about the work he put in this summer. Can we expect another leap in his effectiveness? It appears to me that soon he will have to take the point from D-Fish, maybe sooner than we like, is he preparing for it?

Glad to hear the defense is the base of where we will start. I am still burning up inside about losing to Boston. The taste in my mouth is more like Sasha's. And they talked such trash all summer, even clowned us at the ESPY's in LA, I only want to see them in the Finals. Glad to be talking Finals again though. I cant wait for this camp to actually start.

You know its been great to have Luke all these years and I have always been a supporter, but I think it might be time to let him go quietly in the night when his contract ends. He stays hurt. I hate it for him, but we need bodies.

Basketball is back, all is right with the world again.

MAN...THIS IS PRETTY EXCITING TIMES FOR LA LAKERS....

THE PLAYERS ARE SO EAGER.. INFACT A LITTLE BIT MORE PUMP UP FOR COMFORT...

GO LAKERS! GO KOBE!

Has Kobe been drinking from the same cup as Laker Tom?

"We're the favorites for a reason," Bryant said. "That's one of the things I tell the guys . . . we've got all the tools here, we've got all the pieces to the puzzle, now it's on us to do the work. If we do the work, we should win it."

Welcome to the 'Glass-Half-Full-Club' Kobe.

Mamba24, I see a Bandwagon somewhere in that quote from Kobe.

Sign Fatty up and put me on the bus for that Figueroa joy ride in June. (Mamba24. I want an aisle seat if you can do it)

Fatty - Who says, "Nothing is going to stop the Lakers this year. We're going to ride that Purple and Gold bus down Figueroa and not stop till we get to Disneyland."

I thought I'd leave Los angeles to live in a city that supposedly less expensive. First of all that cost of living interpretation is overrated and a bunch of bs. Being 36 years old and being a Laker fan since age 10, I'll be moving back to CA to watch my boys win this years NBA title. Let's see what Lamar can do, we all know how talented he is but, if he can't play well against sf and doesnt want to come off the bench, then trade his a........

Lakers basketball - so close to being the start of the season I can taste it!

I went to the LAL/NOH game last April and what do I see? Trevor, out there with his broken foot, shooting. Shooting threes, over and over again. He was out there before anyone else, shooting with B Shaw. Here he talks about working on his shot again. I like it. He was showing how well he fit with this team before the injury, and now we will get to see it. Both he and Drew are hungry after sitting out last year. I can't wait to see how they will gel together as a team.

Sadly I will be moving the the waste that is AZ and having to hear about the Suns. Of course I will be getting LP and wearing my Laker gear EVERYWHERE. I even plan on getting Laker scrubs so I can rep at work. The Suns. *shudder*

For always and evermore, no matter what desert wasteland I reside in:

"I LOVE LA!!!!!"

GO LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow. We can finally begin talking about what is happening instead of what could happen. Thank God.

GO LAKERS!

Good morning Mamba24, Charles, Jon K and the rest of the morning CRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE'RE BAAAACCKKK!!!!!!!

AK/BK - thanks for the good stuff from media day. I know I'm about excited as I can get without blowing out blood vessels in my eyes!! FINALLY - Laker season has arrived!!!!

Mamba24 - make sure I'm rolling on the 60+ win bandwagon this year - I'm feelin it!

GO LAKERS!

Good Morning,

Anybody smiling in anticipation?

SHACK showed up to media day in shape and looking strong. Something tells me that isn't what laker fans were hoping to hear, or at least, it proves that everyone who warned about his conditioning were dead wrong.

LOPEZ said his role model is the Ben Wallace of the lakers-detroit Finals. That should frighten you.

Porter is changing everything about the SUNS' D. No longer will the paint belong to anyone but the SUNS..

longtime sez

"The Suns. *shudder* "

That is the reaction many laker fans will be having this season - you have reason to be afraid, very afraid.

Enjoy the limelight and premature expectations, laker fans! The SUNS will quietly be growing more powerful than anyone possibly imagined.

justanothermambafromanothamotha,

Do you reside in California?

Paul Pierce sez:

"Until somebody says that I'm the greatest ever to do it, then I've still got a long ways to go.''

You have to admire his motivation, I suppose.

>>>LOPEZ said his role model is the Ben Wallace of the
>>>lakers-detroit Finals. That should frighten you.

My role model is Thomas Jefferson. That don't mean I'm going
to become president, revolutionize agriculture, and write the
Declaration of Independence.

There's a large gap between having a role model and being
as good as that role model.

>>>Porter is changing everything about the SUNS' D. No
>>>longer will the paint belong to anyone but the SUNS..

That's nice. Could you go paint the barn? We need the gym
right now for the big kids to play basketball.

MAMBA 24,

don't forget about the 70+ win bandwagon. i'm driving that bus. there are many open seats, bandwagon should be filled up by end of season. =p

GO LAKERS

ps Bynum looks scary.

>>>Porter is changing everything about the SUNS' D.

Enjoy watching those 82 to 76 victories over Cleveland. In
the mean time, the Lakers will be whupping Boston 120 to 93.

Man, its great to see Derek Fisher smiling again and being a leader.

Derek Fisher = Future Coach of the Lakers

GO LAKERS!

Fun times. Preseason is just around the corner!

The AZCentral Funs board is a riot today.

BUTTLER is chock full of BS claims of grandeur.

BUTLER

Who have the Suns added to make you come to that conclusion.

From reviewing the videos:

1. Andrew Bynum looks HUGE!

2. To quote Trevor Ariza "I don't understand how people are going to be able to stop us." RIGHT THE FRICK ON!

3. To quote Chris Mihm "It's been six weeks since I've had to ice my ankle." If Chris is back, with Mbenga and Powell we are fricken DEEP at center. YES!

4. Kobe looks a bit antsy in his interview. I think he just wants to get at it and not be surrounded by journalists asking twenty questions.

5. To quote Kobe "Don't give me that 'Two Towers' nonsense! That's a Texas thing and I hate Texas!" Me too, brother. How about "The Tall Trees" or "The Gold Forest"?

GO LAKERS!

Vujachick sez about Turiaf:

"We're gonna miss him. It's hard to replace that, because he was Mr. Energy."

The slovenian sees trouble, and so do I. Turiaf played many, many games for the oft-injured byenumb and gasal last season, and with Turiaf gone and no real replacement, the lakers are already treading on thin ice.

Let's put it this way - SHACK has played more than byenumb on avg the past couple seasons. Both laker bigs have a history of frequently missing games...perhaps Magic can return to play center?

Have you heard what Odom said bout Phil pondering making him a 6th man:
"He must have woke up and bumped his head."

I'm personally dissapointed in Odom for saying this. He must realize that this will be an experiment that only happens if the Lakers struggle with him in the starting lineup.

Don't be a cancer Lamar!

Maybe this is too much to look into but: LO is not into the 6th man role.

http://tinyurl.com/525q3g

damn...it looks like bynum is ready for war! let's do this!

Nice aura for the Lakers. My prayers will be for the good health of all especially the players till we get the first of the coming championship trophies and the next one, and the next one and the next..........

Go go go Lakers!!!

Here's what the phx paper says about SHACK:

From the EV Trib:

"From their end, the Suns were happy to see the 36-year-old O'Neal come back for his first full season with them in good shape and, by his own estimate, at the same weight (between 330 and 335) he was at when he led the Lakers to the first of three straight championships. Shaq now says he's with a better team and a better coach than back then."

Luke said that hopefully they know what I can do! Yes sir! We know exactly what you can do! NOTHING! My fault, make ribs and shop at Sam's Club.

It's amazing that the Lakers organization is so good at rebuilding. One of the thigs that makes me proud to be a fan is that the Lakers never let themselves go too much, although I remember them missing the playoffs two times since I was a small child...
I think that Lamar Odom needs to take a good look at his talent and stop whining about coming off of the bench. He has a lot of nerve asking to start in front of players that played their hearts out during the championship, while he ran around like he was drunk or something - he played very lacidasically during the finals...

"Let's put it this way - SHACK has played more than byenumb on avg the past couple seasons."

Incorrect yet again Butler.

Shaq total games played (06-07 and 07-08, both Miami and PHX)
101 games

Andrew's total games played (06-07 and 07-08):
117 games

And average, nice hehe.

Shaq: 50.5 games
Bynum: 58.5 games

Hmm Butler I thought you were smarter than that. Are you sure you even passed 3rd grade (Division is learned in 3rd grade for public schools except perhaps earlier in Asia)

"Both laker bigs have a history of frequently missing games"

Incorrect again. Bynum's rookie year didn't count since simply Phil didn't play him much since he was a rookie and played instead Kwa-may Brown and Chris Mihm at center.

2nd Season Bynum played in All 82 games. 3rd Season only that knee injury (which was severe) made him miss games. Don't try me with Pau. Pau missed only 10 games as a Laker. Pau at the very least still played 66 last season while Shaq only played 61 games.

"Porter is changing everything about the SUNS' D. No longer will the paint belong to anyone but the SUNS.."

Haha. Not only are the Lakers are laughing but so are the Hornets, Rockets, Spurs (owns the Suns), Celtics, Pistons (Rasheed must bleed Wallace owns Amare: "There is no person in the world who can defend that shot" Amare to D'Antoni as Wallace keeps shooting over him), the Magic with the Superman of the East, not to mention Utah Jazz who doesn't have a dominating big man but has owned the Suns recently. Keep dreaming Butler-boy.

"Enjoy watching those 82 to 76 victories over Cleveland."

Long Time, they won't even win against Cleveland. There is no one to stop Lebron (Raja Bell? Lebron is too strong for him) and no way that Stevie "getting ankles broken" Nash can defend Mo Williams. Only Marion could only properly defend Lebron and with him gone, no adequate defensive stopper to stop Lebron.

-blitz

Fatty,

We need LakerTom optimism in the Wall Street than in the Lakers sidelines. Too much exhuberance on a favored team may not be clever if not mixed with hardwork. They need some challenges and trials before achieving glory. We said it all in this blog, overanalyzed each player, now it's implementation time. Preseason training and jelling are the ingredients of Lakers success, they need to improve their shooting percentages especially in the free throw line, review tapes of games and correct those flaws or bad habits of Odom's forcing through, Bynum's unnecessary fouls, Gasol indecisiveness or ackward defense, Fisher's inability to chase fast & young PG's etc. Indulging too much on Championship without preparation is akin to disaster.

PJ was right in considering Odom in the 2nd team. That was our weakness in the Finals, Odom was not fresh when he was mixed with Walton and Turiaf and others. In this scenario, Odom and Vlad slipped on the 2nd coupled by Sasha, Farmar, Mihm, I believe we have a sustaining force that either resurge or upkeep the lead established by the starters. I just hope PJ will stick to the best Laker players this year.

BUTLER,

LOL.

You call Bynum oft injured when Shaq has missed at least 9 games every season since 2000-01.

"Good Morning,

Anybody smiling in anticipation?

Posted by: Charles | September 30, 2008 at 08:21 AM"

Yes, :-)

Butler,

"The slovenian sees trouble, and so do I."

~~ The Slovenian may have the right to be worried to miss his friend and a guys he plays with often however I could not understand on your statement "so do I". I did not see Shucks & Nasty in that equation, why is Butler worried? LOL!

Me: Hey Butler, I just won $50 million in the lottery, isn"t that great?

BUTLER: Great? Great? Do you have any idea how much you will pay in taxes? And now you need an accountant, investment adviser, etc. Man I feel sorry for you.

Me: Hey Butler I got the entire Swedish Bikini Team coming over to my house later, isn't that great?

BUTLER: Great? Come on man are you serious? Have you seen the price of condoms lately? Man I feel sorry for you.

Me: Hey Butler, I saw the Suns won their season opener last night, congratulations?

BUTLER: Yeah, I just made a down payment on my finals tickets. 82-0 who would have believed it?

DELUSION, ITS NOT JUST FOR BREAKFAST ANYMORE...

'So kobe how are you feeling about turning thirty? - body ok?'

'well in the layup line in Bejing I did windmill and I dunked it and I got drug tested right after the game'

LOL classic response!

I think the real question is, did Kobe and Pau talk about the Olympics at all.

----------------------

Anyways, its good to see the attitudes coming in to training camp. I like it that Lamar isn't "cool" with going to the bench. That's the kind of confidence and a little pride we need. And lest we forget though, starting is overrated. So I'm sure PJ put that out there not as a decree from upon high, but as a feeler to see where LO is at and how to approach the subject of lineups.

The Beast looks like a monster. The one thing that I sort of didn't like from him was that he worked on a jumper of some sort. Meh. Hook shots and foot work would be more important to me. I'm sure its a non-issue, but I cringe at the fact that a center like him develops a jumper as an out. If he didn't have that option, he'd work harder at getting closer to the basket or maybe have an unblockable hook shot. But a jumper pulls a big out further...and that's a waste of height and space.

Otherwise no negatives. I'd like to see what Jordan has worked on since its his 3rd year now. I'd like to see him have develop a midrange jumper and bring back that floater, to keep teams honest. Defensively, he's likely to be a liability against thoes top tier 1s since he's fast, but not necessarily quick laterally. But the reason I mention him is because it a) time for him to show that he belongs to at least the mid-level echelon of point guards, and b) the point guard position is a position of relative defensive weakness for us.

Still, the teams defensive scheme is probably going to more important than what Jordan or Fish can give us. How the team will react to pick-and-rolls on the perimeter, especially with essentially 2 centers on the court remains to be seen.

Whew. I'm just glad the season is here. Last year, we stumbled upon the Finals. This year, the championship is ours for the taking; the Lakers WILL be ready to snatch it from whomever the East brings (it won't be the Celtics this year!!!).

Man, Bynum looks yoked. You can tell he's in better shape this season than last.

As for LO, I hope he was shooting 300 corner threes a day during the offseason if he's saying that Phil must have bumped his head.

Who gives a flying fig about Shaquille O"Neal's weight?

Something missing from the Shaq coming into camp in shape...he left AZ because he didn't want to work out in the 110 plus heat...hm........could have been in perfect shape !! I say Shaq plays 50-55 games MAX !

Jon K: We cool?

I admit that it wasn't just losing the Finals - but HOW WE LOST - that knocked me completely out of sorts and into that unnecessary beef with you.

I hope we're cool. I would like to resume my chaplain duties in peace knowing that the air is clear between us.

Good Morning Mamba24, Good Morning Charles, Jon K, Fatty, "Pig", Justa and the Morning Maniac Crue!!!!!

AK/BK - once again, thanks for all you do.......keep up the great reports.

It's officially time to get excited, folks! We're healthy, we're deep, and we're on a mission! Get the "D" down guys, we're going to have a parade this spring!

Mamba, I'm on the "We're the favorites for a reason" bandwagon..........Fatty, I got shotgun!

LET"S GO LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't make too much out of L.O.'s statements... first they seemed to carry some humor with them (talking about P.G. hitting his head on a rock) and secondly, you wouldn't exactly expect a guy who's started every game in his career to relish the idea of coming off the bench.

Whatever role L.O. takes this year, I don't expect that he'll be causing team friction - it just doesn't seem his style.

Re: Luke, I'm hoping he'll have a solid season off the bench - not playing big minutes but filling a role. This will be his 6th season here and he can certainly organize a second unit on the floor and chip in 7 or 8 pts a game.

The Blitz -

You're good to act as my fact checker, thank you.

Now let's discuss how gasal has lowered byenumb's value.
