Kobe on Kimmel
September 10, 2008 | 9:52
am
For those of you who, perhaps because you have jobs or children, couldn't stay up late enough to watch, here's Kobe's appearance last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Also, tune in at 11 a.m. PDT for Purple, Gold and Blue. Fox Sports analyst Patrick O'Neal will be dropping by. Plus, we'll be performing surgery on Dwayne Mitchell's pinkie during the broadcast. You know, just so somebody gets a pinkie under the knife.

Thanks for the link Kbros!

Kobe is now relaxed, joked around and makes the right statements compared to when he came to the Lakers as 17year high school phenom. I wonder where are his parents and sisters now? They used to attend the games at the Forum but disappeared in the stand after his marriage to Vanessa or perhaps lay low and would not want to create fuss about it.
His reasons for not having a surgery is amazing being the leader of the team. However, it becomes dangerous too b/c mean players or guards would target the weakness of every player and treat it as an accident. Seemingly, you don't want an incomplete person playing there in the basketball court. There has to be a way to undergo surgery, get a shorter rehab and miss not so many games. Read the article of Mike Kahn on that pinkie.

As much as I love watching Kobe play, I don't love watching Kobe in interviews - especially sit down one-on-one exclusives like this one. This particular interview was better than most, but in general there something unnatural about the whole thing. I think he probably just tries too hard.
Maybe it's just me.
Still got love for ya though, Kob.

puddle,
I think he does try a bit too hard and he seems a bit nervous at times, but he is intelligent and with a decent sense of humor.
I enjoy watching him talk about basketball. He becomes engrossed in the subject. You can tell the guy really loves the game.

mitchell (aka LakerTruth),
"So we both agree that Kobe did a "good job" last season, as well as the threepeat years. It's Kobe's performance in the years in between that we have always disagreed upon."
i've always said, even in the "KLBeast" days, that i was a kobe fan up until about 2003 when kobe wanted to be the "man" in LA. what he's done since 2003 has been marginal given (emphasis on "given") the circumstances.
sure, kobe led a bunch of scrubs to the playoffs (2005-2007), but you have to see it from the POV that had kobe played his cards right, he'd be competing with jordan's legacy with shaq as a sidekick. i concede shaq can be a kb*iatch, but the dude was still good from 2005-2006 and could still be productive as a laker now.
you have to remember, i'm holding the kobe and shaq to magic and kareem's laker legacy.
in either case, the past is the past and let's not dwell. 2005-2007 taught kobe some lessons which was, in my most humble opinion, the reason for the "Kobe NV " in 2008.
we can agree.
btw, we had some fun (facetious) exchanges during the "KLBeast" days eh? i forgot your original sceenname.
take care bro.

puddle-
I agree with you. I enjoy watching his interviews but they always seem a bit uncomfortable. He constantly tries to make jokes and come across as this normal guy when in reality he is one of a kind and anything but normal. I do applaud him for changing his image around and being a nice guy. Can't wait until the season so the only thing out of Kobe's mouth will be Lakers.

SHACK is a much more entertaining interview, and much more comfortable in his own skin. Same with MJ. I think D-Wade or LeBrawn or Chris Paul would have made a better choice.
I just watched the replay of the Olympic Gold game. USA was lucky to escape with a gold with the mistakes kobee made in the 4th.
He did a terrible job defending Rudy Fernandez, giving Rudy the play of the olympics with that dunk over D-How. And in the next play, kobee missed a three. If it weren't for D-Wade's late-game heroics, USA woulda been sunk.
And of course, without AMARE, USA was not dominant in the game. Kudos to AMARE for making the game close. And to D'ANTONI for showing the form which enabled him to beat phil jackson "every time" and win the gold for USA.

Man, I can't wait to see what BUTLER is going to say when the Phoenix Suns are fighting for their lives to make the playoffs next season. It'll be just our luck that he'll probably stop showing up.
It's laughable to think the Suns are going to be one of the premier defensive teams in the league when 3 our of your 5 starters are terrible defenders and Raja Bell is overrated defensively.
Couple that with the fact that Shaq only respects superstar coaches and openly questioned Stan Van Gundy in Miami, when Van Gundy had experienced more success coaching than Terry Porter.
Posted by: Xodus | September 10, 2008 at 11:34 AM
LAKER TRUTH,
I think it could happen, but I think the costs of signing him for that much would outweigh the gains. Now, could I see Kobe signing in Italy for $20 million per year when he's at the tail end of his career? Absolutely. But I don't see anyone getting offered $50 million in the near future. It's purely a media fueled thing.
Posted by: Xodus | September 10, 2008 at 11:38 AM
Butler,
Perhaps, if we have the flying daggers of Suns players like Amare and Shaq. USA could have gotten a "diamond" medal instead of mere gold. LOL!

Kobe Bryant is a psychological freak who loves to play basketball.
Shaquille O'Neal is an emotional child who uses basketball to get what he wants.
Advantage as a human being: Kobe Bryant.

Well put! And well played my friend.
Seriously, SHACK is more likable and thus more popular than kobee...why? Well, SHACK is genuine, funny, and smart. He comes off as a good person.
kobee...well...he always seems to be caught up in his own mind a bit too much...and comes off as the kid who you used to resent in school because he had such a big head.
SHACK has a big head too, but he isn't trying to hide it. He revels in it. Kind of like Barkley. Or Muhammad Ali.
I like that kimmel put kobee on the spot for having the god-fest with bush in the locker room. Bush couldn't care less about basketball!

Tito Edwin,
I had Surgery (Shoulder Debriment) last December. They worked on the "Frozen Shoulder" aspect and decided that there was so much scar tissue; the cuff and labrum will just have to wait and heal on it's own.
In the process of adjusting my shoulder this year, they fractured my clavicle. I just really need to work on therapy and share Andrew Bynum's enthusiasm. For me it will be about getting back into Muay Thai and Submissions Wrestling.
I really get Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" situation. I say "no, No, NO." But I know deep inside it is good for my crumbling diabetic body.
Got Social Health Care anyone?

I'll be right here, commenting on the lakers' attempt to fulfill expectations with an injured finger, a bynumb who hasn't played in months nor with gasal, and a coach who has lost his magic touch.
The SUNS will be better than you think on D. It'll be apparent soon enough! After all, the Celts showed once again that D wins the ring. Terry Porter is going to be the second black coach and ex-PG to take a team to the top!

First off, I ain't your "Bro". And if you use cliches like "give it a rest" I may have to recommend you not comment on my board.
AMARE was on the team, and has the invitation to the 2012 team. He withdrew to rest his body and knee in order to give the NBA season everything he's got. I applaud the decision, especially since he's been playing nonstop for years.
Is that the "obvious reason" you meant? Or do you know something we don't?
kobee had a bad olympics, a bad Finals - and the finger might be the cause for such horrid shooting. Or perhaps fatigue. Either way, he better figure out how to play better quick or the Clips are gonna be taking over Staples!

BUTLER,
>>>I just watched the replay of the Olympic Gold game.
>>>USA was lucky to escape with a gold with the
>>>mistakes kobee made in the 4th.
>>>
>>>... (a bunch of other malarkey)
[WAH WAH WAH. I'm Butler and my fragile heroes were
too soft to make it through summer ball even though they
barely made the playoffs. Waaaaaaaahhhhh. I think I'll
whine about the player I hate the most. waaaaaahhhh]
Look. You can put whatever hater spin you want on it,
but everybody who watched the game knows who saved
the game in the 4th, and it wasn't DWade. Wade was
excellent in the first half which helped a lot, but when
push came to shove in the fourth, it was Kobe who took
the game in hand and put it away.
Yes, Kobe tried to steal the ball from Rudy Fernandez, but
DHoward didn't react well and got himself posterized.
Once he knew he was behind RudyF, he could have
taken him down hard before he had a chance to get the
shot off, but he tried to block him instead and he got
schooled for it. Chris Bosh outplayed DHoward by a lot
in the Olympics, and if Amare weren't so fragile that he
had to stay at home and watch, then he would have
outplayed Howard as well.
Remember, there are only two players on the 2008 U.S.
Men's Olympic Basketball team that are undefeated in
international play. Jason Kidd and Kobe. DWade, LeBron,
and Carmelo showed what they were capable of 2 years
ago in Japan and 4 years ago in Greece.

>>>Seriously, SHACK is more likable and thus more
>>>popular than kobee...why? Well, SHACK is genuine,
>>>funny, and smart. He comes off as a good person.
Shaq is a backstabber. He's backstabbed every prominent
previous teammate he's had, and soon he'll be dogging on
DWade and after he's retired, he'll be dogging on Steve Nash
and Amare Stoudemire.
Shaq is as arrogant as Paul Pierce. Pierce declares himself
the best player in basketball and every sane person in the
world laughs at his huge ego. Shaq declares himself the
"Most Dominant Ever". Though he was the best center of
his time (no longer), he's going to need to win a few more
rings, score a whole lot more points, rebounds, and blocks,
and show a more competitive attitude for the WHOLE season
before he starts comparing himself to Russell and Wilt and
Kareem.
And personally, Shaq doesn't come off as a "good person"
to me. Good people don't make racist comments, cheat on
their wives, stalk ex-girlfriends, and talk derogatorily about
all of their ex teammates.
The fact that BUTLER is slobbering all over Shaq's junk
is no surprise. The biggest and strongest guy has always
been able to sway the opinions of the small of mind.

Shum: "No one knows Kobe's finger better than Kobe does"
There's a joke in there somewhere. I know there is.
Puddle - Sounds like a number of Laker fans share your sentiment about Kobe's interviews including me. He doesn't come off as genuine. With the way players are schooled in the fine art of public perception and delivering rhetoric these days by the NBA and their own teams (John Black) it's rare to fine a player who doesn't come off as disingenuous but Kobe basically typifies it. Let's just say he's no John Salley.

BUTLER,
>>> Either way, he better figure out how to play better quick

The only time the Clips are gonna be taking over Staples
is when they're shutting down the Suns like a failed bank.

JUST CHECKING IN
I GOT A SEVERE HANG NAIL AT THE BEGINNING OF SUMMER AND THE DOCTOR TOLD ME IF I JUST IGNORED IT IT WOULD MOST LIKELY HEAL ITSELF IN A WEEK OR TWO.
WELL I WAITED 2 WEEKS AND IT STILL HURT SO I DECIDED TO GET A SECOND OPINION. THIIS DOCTOR SAID THE INJURY IS A TRICKY ONE AND HE RECOMMENDED SURGERY (BAND-AID) WITH UP TO 4 WEEKS OF RECUPERATION TIME.
MY DECISION WAS TO FOREGO THE SURGERY AND CONTINUE TO PLAY GOLF WITH MY BUDDIES EVERYDAY. AFTER ALL I'M THE BEST GOLFER OF MY GROUP AND I ENJOY TEACHING MY LESS TALENTED MATES HOW TO BE BETTER PLAYERS.
BECAUSE I KNOW WITHOUT ME, MY GOLFING BUDDIES WOULD FALL APART OR WORSE YET, FIND A PERMANENT REPLACEMENT. IF THAT HAPPENED, HOW CAN I MAKE MONEY ON THE COURSE?
SUFFICE TO SAY, I'M CURRENTLY PLAYING THROUGH THE PAIN AND SHOWING MY BUDDIES WHAT A GREAT GUY I AM (CHA CHING)
I CAN ALWAYS GET A THIRD OPINION IN THE SLOWER WINTER MONTHS.
TEE TIME, GOTTA GO
