Kobe Bryant - Media Day talk

September 30, 2008 | 11:00 pm

Kobe What a difference 365-ish days makes.  Around this time last season, Kobe Bryant was barely masking his dissatisfaction with the Lakers front office and barely bothering to fake any enthusiasm about kicking off the season.  One year (and a blossomed Andrew Bynum/stolen Pau Gasol/solidified bench/returning Derek Fisher and a Finals appearance) later, dude's happy as a clam about life in the purple and gold lane.  There were more smiles and wit on display than any hint of trepidation, and talk of the Lakers being among the creme de elite sits just fine with him.  "We're the favorites for a reason," Bryant said. "That's one of the things I told the guys. We've got all the tools. We've got all the pieces of the puzzle. Now it's on us to do the work.  If we do the work, we should win it."

Kobe discussed topics ranging from the notion of him playing in Europe (as BK and I have both said, it's a purely media-driven, far-fetched scenario) to playing fewer minutes in America (he can handle 40-43 mpg no problem, but decreasing them is always a mutual Mamba/PJ goal) to being 30 (which, as he put it, is "the new 20").  He also provided more info about his un-surgeried pinkie, which he feels will need to endure a nearly identical hit as the one causing the original injury for him to miss time. "The scar tissue has settled.  It's pretty thick right now."  That particular nugget provided some relief for me, as I've been through a similar situation after tearing my ACL and cartilage in a skiing accident.  Originally, the doctor thought I would need separate surgeries for each ailment, but when it came time to go under the knife, my ligament had almost entirely re-scarred itself, which led to an easier rehab and quicker recovery.  Thus, playing through the condition now seems less potentially risky than I thought back in early September.

Mamba 24

I'm sticking with 70+ wins, baby.

Call me crazy.

I loved the Kevin Ding OC Register piece, normally I make a cross with my fingers and hiss at the OC Register (waaaaaaay to conservative for me) but this story was awesome. Everyone is catching Laker fever, which leads me to my topic of the day:

EXPECTATIONS

They are running higher than Bob Marley fans at reggae fest. I mean high. I worry about some of the younger guys having a drop off at the beginning and it affecting their over all psyche. I believe that is what happened to Luke last year and even when he got healthy, he never really got back into shape mentally. This is where Phil will (hopefully) do a masterful job of coaching even though nobody will mention him as a COY candidate, based on the roster. Overall, I love our chances and can't wait to see the scrubs running through some sets.

GO LAKERS!!!!

back to basketball

I, for one, am tired of all this yellow talk. When do the games start? I'm ready for the Lakers New Dynasy to slap these pretentious fools down. The Title is ours for the taking.
Like Pig, I want to ride bandwaggons. Let's see, 65 wins, Figeroa Parade, Mamba MVP II, and Beast MIP, that should do it.
Oh, and Butler? If you have the greatest point guard of all time (snicker) and the greatest center of all time (guffaw), how is it you didn't win a title last year? Eagerly awaiting your (non)response. : )

Forgive me for thinking ahead here....

My questions are:

What team is going to surprise us out of the West?
-I've got the Blazers being unpredictable given youth, the Rockets being unpredictable given injuries that are already affecting them. Wtih PHX, a full year of Shaq and a new system are also unpredictable. All 3 of those teams have fairly legit big men.

What team is going to come out of the East?
-Who can really say the Celts have a lock on it given they've lost their most valuable bench player and they had teams they were supposed to dominate take them to 6 or 7 games?

How about a "Forget about the regular season, 16-0 in the Playoffs bandwagon?"

Now as for Lamar, "he must've bumped his head." Time is up. Tick-tock. How long is it potential before it becomes "wasted potential?" Ship his a$$ out.

Lamar=Laker until we find a taker

MAMBA 24

Put me on the bandwagon! Go Lakers!

I just came up with a name for Lamar if he does come off the bench. The Sixth Sense!
You like huh?

Tee hee hee
Go Lakers!

BUTLER,

>>>Does Robin Lopez have the best teacher possible, or what?

Poor Phoenix. They finally get Robin, but there's nobody on
the team who's still good enough to be called Batman.

You know, being a Suns fan must be like being in a relationship with a hot chick who is just not very smart and is also cheating on you. She looks great (2-time MVP, former and current All-Stars) and shows a lot of potential (4th best regular season winning percentage in NBA history). You contantly convince yourself that at some point she'll stop disappointing you (two Finals appearances, zero wins) and will bring you the ultimate prize of her undying committment (the Larry O) and you both talk about how it's going to happen (BUTLER, Shaq), but deep inside both sides know it's just a lie. You stick around hoping that someday it will come true, but you've only set yourself up for the occasional and unsatisfying quickie (playoff appearances that end prematurely) that simply prolongs the agony (ZERO championships in 40 years). You'll stay together for way too long (the aforementioned 40 years) and try things that you know won't work, like therapy or counseling (Steve Kerr as GM or Shaq or firing D'Antoni), but eventually one of the two (the fans or the Suns organization) has to wise up and realize it's a pipe dream.

Being a Lakers fan is like marrying the hot chick who also happens to be smart, committed and wants to do everything to please you (14 championships, highest regular season winning percentage over course of NBA history) and it's your pleasure to return the favor (paying high ticket prices, tolerating bandwagon celebs). The relationship is sure to thrive for many years, as it has proven to do so to this point (29 conference titles, championships ranging from 1949 to 2002). Sure, there are times when it's tough (early-mid 1990s) but you always manage to work it out (trade for newly drafted Kobe + sign Shaq = dynasty). You sometimes do what hurts (trade Shaq) to make things work in the long run (2008 Finals appearance, 2009 favorites, future anchored by 20 year old center) and even when things seem to hit a low (2004-2005), neither side gives up on the other and both sides work hard to get it back on track (draft Bynum, keep Kobe, trade for Pau). The marriage is a fulfilling one for both sides and one that is sure to thrive for ever.

Man, it's great to be a Lakers fan.

#4 sez:

"What team is going to surprise us out of the West?"

Everyone's writing the SUNS off, and no one's mentioned the Clips, who'll be more potent than people expect.

The lackers have the spotlight on them, and that's fine. They still need to find an answer to Rondo and the toughness questions. Any team led by bryant is still a flawed team.

Mamba,

Since I am the driver of the 4th Dynasty BW, it only makes sense that I hitch a ride on the Championship Season Bandwagon --

I request that you roll out the "4th Dynasty Bandwagon" before the first game of the season and run over the trolls.

Kobe is the greatest.

On the other hand, Eric Piatkowski for MVP!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdJGV_bb7g8

The tall trees in California are the Sequoias.

This is the season of the Sequoias for the Lakers.

(and Mihm, Powell, and Ariza are the second sequoias.

Just a thought.

Looks like Robert Horry won't be re-signing with the Spurs
this year. If the Lakers have a roster spot open late in the
year, he might be a good guy to bring in, like Boston brought
in PJ Brown last year. He'd be well rested, he's ALWAYS
willing to play nasty defense, and he's pretty much the best
good luck charm there is for winning championships.

Puddle,

That was nothing short of inspired -- do you think they have this kind of entertainment on the Suns blog -- oh the humanity and the loneliness!!

LONGTIMELAKERFAN A D@MN GOOD THOUGHT!!

BUTLER,

"Any team led by bryant is still a flawed team."

LOL!

Guess that's why we won the season series 3-1 and beat the Spurs 4-1 in the playoffs while you guys lost 4-1.

The Delusions Continue.

I'd bring in Horry in a heartbeat. I'd like to have a guy like Fox too, in some capacity. Why not Fox the assistant coach? Probably not glamorous enough for him, what with his acting and all. But Horry as situational player / part time coach might work out well.

Another thought. I probably read this somewhere, but I think Bynum’s goal line defense in the paint is going to be the key to the Odom / Gasol / Bynum lineup. Gasol can be beat by quick PFs and Odom by quick SFs. That’s going to have to be option 1a for opposing teams this year. If Bynum can punish players who make it past Odom and Gasol, if he can make stops, then the offense will be neigh unstoppable.

But who knows.

Wes

"got to rest, he's getting old - players like kobey that rely on athleticism are the first to go.

NASH, like Stockton, relies on his wits and inner greatness to stay effective into his 40s."

BUTLER,

Dude, Kobe, easily, has ten more years in him. Four more explosive years, followed by at least six "old man Ron Harper" years. Although, Kobe will always be athletic.

Kobe's the whole package.

puddle,

>>>Being a Lakers fan is like marrying the hot chick...

nice.

I now pronounce you man and team.

MAMBA 24,

THE BANDWAGON IS FILLING UP.

May need to make it a double-decker bus

GET YA CAMCORDERS READY PEOPLE

THE SHOW IS ALMOST HERE

GO LAKERS

wesjoenixon,

Remember the Clippers draft debacle with Yaroslav Korolev? He was 18 and he was out of Russia. So it looks like Europeans younger than 21 can be drafted. The question is "Should they be?"

GO LAKERS!

Yes, I'm in - the bar will remain open all season long.

Xodus -

I guess you're satisfied with that WC banner from last season, then?

Ok,

Love,

BUTLER

Just got out of the car listening to Sonny Vaccaro talking to the Loose Cannons about LO.

Sounds like LO threw a hissy today at practice over the 6th man thing. I'll say it again, the only option LO has is to play out of his mind this year and help this team win a championship. Anything less and he's shooting himself in the foot.

If he pouts he'll be seen as a poor locker room guy. That's going to hurt his stock. If he becomes a cancer then he'll get benched or traded. If he gets traded then it'll primarily be to a team looking for cap relief - so there's little to no chance he'll get an extension with that team.

He's yet to play like someone who deserves $14M per so if he wants something in that range, he needs to prove it - make things easier for his agent. If he "attitude"s himself off the team, I hope he becomes one of those journeymen who takes a paycut late in their career just to win a ring b/c that would be ironic.

Lastly, they were talking about getting equal value back for LO. If I were Buss, I'd let him walk. There's more than enough talent left on the squad and $14M is a lot to have coming off the books, especially when you've just added Bynum's contract to it.

Given all of this, my hope is still that it becomes a non-issue, LO plays extraordinary for the Lakers and becomes an essential piece to the championship puzzle.

Please add me to the 60+ band wagon. Can't wait till next week when we get to see how all this really works.

Whatever happened to, "I want to do my part, contribute, and help my team."

But to boast, "I'm the MVP", you wouldn't be satisfied with the 'Rookie of the year', and you have NEVER even played a game!

http://tinyurl.com/4luvv4

Fatty predicts Beasly will be stuffed, (no offense Kiwi its a common American term) shut down, knocked down, and be utterly embarrassed on a daily basis.

Welcome to the NBA rook, where 'pride goeth before a fall' and newbies always pay their dues.

If kobey needs rest now, where will he be come playoff time? In a bed resting??

Hmrhed -

Thanks man. Yes, it was inspired and the Lakers are the inspiration. The team and the fans are itching to get this thing underway.

LTLF -

LOL. Good call. If I wasn't married, I'd have to consider it.

Video from today's practice is up:

http://www.nba.com/lakers/multimedia/0708video.html

Interviews with Bynum and PJ. Sasha rolled his ankle. 6 days til the first game.

How about Travis Henry? A multi-kilo coke deal while playing in the NFL? Now that's a poor use of the bye week.

Reminds one of the sad story of Darryl Henley:

http://www.darrylhenley.com/index.html

Wes

Wes

So Sasha rolled his ankle today? That can't be good.

So much for everyone being healthy...

Lamar = Laker for Life

GO LAKERS

"got to rest, he's getting old - players like kobey that rely on athleticism are the first to go.

NASH, like Stockton, relies on his wits and inner greatness to stay effective into his 40s."

Yep, Butler, it's only the slow white guys who are witty enough to change their game and stay effective until their late 30s. Cuz that athletic Michael Jordan guy SUCKED when he passed 30.

Oh crap, that's right. That's when he won all of his second set of 3-peat championships.

Fool.

The Machine rolled his ankle? Replace it with a new one. C'mon, he's the Machine after all!!!

"Get those stats outta my face, son"

Awww what's the matter boy? Crying so much that the stats proved you wrong? It's okay though, we already had one person who believed the world revolved around him (Mike T.) so another one who has that kind of view is okay still Butler boy. Lamar already lowered Marion's FG% not once but TWICE. Haha I love schooling you.

"Put the #s aside and watch the games. If Lam-Od did such a swell job vs. Boston as a "defensive stopper" then why was PJ Brown schooling Lam-Od again and again? Why was Boston controlling the paint the entire series? If Lam-Od isn't the type of playa to be effective in the paint, then why didn't PJ assign Lam-Od to cover Paul Pierce?"

PJ Brown stats in the Finals: 4.0ppg on 40 FG%. LOL!

Damn if PJ Brown was the one to be guarded by Odom then Lamar did good against PJ Brown. (Yes I have watched the games as well as painful as it was).

Why did Boston control the paint? Kevin Garnett and the weakness of Ronny Turiaf. Ronny averaged less than 0.6 rpg in the finals (another torpedo hit in the face of your weak arguments). Now not only got Bynum and not to mention Powell who is a better rebounder than Ronny ever was (Powell's rpg last season: 5.2 vs Ronny's rpg of 3.9). Now the paint is ever more strengthened haha!

Why didn't Lamar guard Paul Pierce? Simple, who would cover Perkins then? Radman? I already proved that against McDyess Perkins averaged more than 9 ppg. Against a weak defender like Radman, Perkins would have scored in double digits for the series. Now Odom can guard Pierce for all you want to. Don't try the Ronny crap on me as well. Ronny wasn't a ideal defender beyond a shot blocker. Otherwise bigs abused him.

Poor Poor Butler, I just keep sinking and sinking your boat of arguments. Your probability of ever winning over me in an argument based on previous arguments:

0.08 Probability.

lakers_sth,

Thanks for the link. Phil has kind words for Josh Powell and fairly snarky comments about everyone else.

GO LAKERS!

Mamba... I'm in!!

THE COMBINED NUMBER OF WINS FOR *
• CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON BANDWAGON *

GO LAKE SHOW!!

LIGHTS OUT!!

For Sasha's injury, at least it happened NOW instead of during the regular season. He might miss some preseason games and that might open a competition between Coby Karl and Joe Crawford over the backup shooting guard slot.

Speedy and safe recovery Sasha.

-blitz

So looks like DJ Mbenga destroyed Sasha's ankle today so he could get a better swipe at Sasha's minutes at shooting guard.

SASHA! HEY SASHA!

I also rolled my ankle today! You know what I did? I walked it off!

WALK IT OFF!

GO LAKERS!

And Dodger internet feeds?

Thanks,

Wes

Its that time of the year again. Times to play in the yearly YAHOO FANTASY BASKETBALL!! Hope we have as much fun as last year. Sign up now before its full.
