Demonstrating why rookies need this Transition Program in the first place

September 3, 2008 | 12:11 pm

Really, Mario and Darrell?  Really?

Cue the inevitable "You gotta be high to do something that dumb" joke.

IN-FRIGGIN-CREDIBLE!!!

The NBA's over-the-top policies regarding marijuana are just ridiculous. Who cares? Let 'em smoke! Better to get high than getting drunk, it doesn't affect athletes physically like alcohol does.

Morons.

GO LAKERS!

Seriously a bad choice on their part.

I echo Jon K whole heartedly.

Morons.

I'd like to see Gunner take the Shaq/Lopez tandem at center... that would be GREAT! Go take that tandem, Gunner, and when you've successfully relocated to Phoenix, give us a shout. Or don't. You seem to have really taken a liking to Butler. You two seem perfect together. Enjoy the desert.

Go Lake Show!

I cannot believe how stupid these kids are!

Didn't anyone ever tell these kids to put a wet towel on the bottom of the door to hide the weed odor?

Mayor of Kobe-Town,

Regarding your comments about the "over-the-top policies regarding marijuana" in the NBA.

You're right in that marijuana is generally less damaging to the human body than alcohol when each are used on a consistently abusive level. However, marijuana is illegal and alcohol is not. Like it or not, a lot of kids look up to these players. They make too much money to be engaging in outrageous and/or illegal activities. It simply hurts the sport.

GO LAKERS!

You know what bothers me is how our rights to privacy are being stripped to the bone and all the media does is say... GOTCHA!

"The players were caught by NBA security IN THEIR HOTEL ROOM..."

You go to the airport now and they can take ANYTHING off your person WITHOUT CAUSE and keep it indefinitely and... not a word from the media. You keep a personal diary? Guess what? Some schlub who didn't make it out of high school can now take that diary, go to another room, sit down and read through it for 3 hours and there's nothing you can do about it. Carrying sensitive data on your portable computer? Again, your computer can disappear for 3 weeks, all the data taken off the hard drive can possibly be sold to a competitor who slips a few bucks to some kid working "security". Don't think this can happen? Hello? Look around you...

But... THANK GOD we "caught" these 2 horrible human beings doing something "illegal" that nobody can clearly explain why it is illegal in the first place. I don't even smoke and think it's absurd. It's not even a perfomance "enhancer"... LOL!

SHACK-LOPEZ literally outweigh byenumb and mihm.

And there will be blood.

As for the pot smoking playas, not a good choice. But what would you do if you got paid millions at 22 years old? Right, you'd be partying it up. There's no crime here, just an antiquated set of laws that do more to encourage violence and prohibition-era gangs along the border than help the American public.

Idiots shoulda just made brownies

REPOST,

TomK,
"Your a fool Gunner if you would take Shaq Lopez over Bynum/ Mihm/Mbenga"

YOU'RE MAKING IT A SHAQ VS BYNUM.

LET ME REPEAT MYSELF, I SAID SHAQ-LOPEZ OVER BYNUM-MIHM OR MBENGA.

YOU NEED TO AVERAGE OUT BOTH THE START AND BACK UP AND NOT JUST THE STARTER.

YEAH BYNUM HAS THE POTENTIAL BUT HE HASN'T WON ANYTHING YET. AND HOW DOES THE BACKUP COMPARE?

Lopez is already potentially better than both Mihm and MBenga.

Shaq has carried this city to 3 rings.

So in that case you got to give the edge to Shaq and Lopez.

if you guys are going to talk Suns on this board too, then I'm reposting this:

http://tinyurl.com/6at3pl

Summary: Shaq, DONE, Nash on his last legs, no fun and gun D'Antoni offense means Amare = Zach Randolph!

Ahahahahaa! That's right, Zach Randolph! Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Concerning KL,

I'm not going to quote it verbatim, but a German poet once said that a person isn't who they are during the last thing they said, they are who they've been during the entire relationship....in other words, they are who they've always been. I'll leave it at that.

Mamba24,
How've you been Devildog?

Semper Fi

QUIZ TIME
How many verses does it take before realizing who we're talking about?

(Don't recall who posted this, but I'm sure it will be repeated over and over again during the season)

*************************************
I could be a better baller
If my head was only smaller
It just gets in the way
do do do do do do

I would fly through the air with ease
And dunk it with authority
If I only had a brain

I would be a better shooter
But I'd rather be at Hooters
drinking my life away
do do do do do do

I could make all my 3 point shots
but hangovers blur my vision lots
If I only had a brain

They say I could be magic
But that would be just tragic
To dribble my life away
do do do do do do

So I'll smoke and smoke the chronic
Who cares if it makes me moronic
It's only just a game

******************************
LET THE SEASON BEGIN
So we can have more fun at the expense of Lamar Odumb.

SHACK will outweigh the entire suns roster by season's end.

Oh! Oh! Did I call this one or not? Monta Ellis, Vlad Radmanovic is on the phone and he's saying MAN UP!

http://tinyurl.com/6zwgou

"Multiple league sources have told ESPN.com that Ellis had several cuts and abrasions on his leg -- atypical of an injury sustained on a basketball court -- in addition to the high ankle sprain and torn deltoid ligament he suffered on Aug. 21."

sounds like a motorcycle injury to me...

The SUNS have been growing stronger all summer long. While the lakers have chosen to stand pat and even lose depth at the already-thin frontcourt positions, the SUNS have amassed power and size in the paint.

SHACK and Lopez will bring the most power at center the SUNS have ever had.

QUESTION FOR THE BLOG:

- Who do you think would be the funnest person on the Lakers to smoke a bowl with?

My pick would be Sasha. You would think that a spaz like Sasha would calm down after taking a hit, but from my experience, I've noticed that spazzes become even more spaztic after a hit. Just one of life's many mysteries.

It's such a bunch of bull. EVERYONE knows the majority of NBA players cheat on their wives and smoke pot. It's common knowledge.

So why does Mr. Stern want to pretend that it's not true? Because it provides a better image for the league and for kids? Since when has lying to the public about something made anything better?

Just be open about it, then Parents can talk about it with their kids and they can actually learn about something instead of just sweeping it under the rug and pretending it doesn't exist.

Gunner,

"YOU NEED TO AVERAGE OUT BOTH THE START AND BACK UP AND NOT JUST THE STARTER. YEAH BYNUM HAS THE POTENTIAL BUT HE HASN'T WON ANYTHING YET. AND HOW DOES THE BACKUP COMPARE?

Not to drag myself into this nonsense, but your argument totally contradicts itself. You can't declare Shaq- despite his obvious decline- ahead of Bynum because Drew hasn't proved himself enough, but then give the nod to Lopez- who's yet to play a minute of NBA ball- over Mihm/Mbenga based on his potential. Gotta pick a side of the street and walk on it.

AK

Stay Thirsty My Friends,

"sounds like a motorcycle injury to me..."

Yep. Sure does, doesn't it?

GO LAKERS!

repost

JAMIE SWEET,
"Luke Walton is injury prone, so he gets lumped in with 65% of the rest of the NBA. If injury prone is such a big worry, than nobody should have offered Corey Maggette, Baron Davis, or Paul Pierce the amount of money they got. Injuries are a fact of life in sports.

Speed: Luke defininitely isn't greased lightning out there, but he makes up for it with positioning and anticipation. Is he as good a defending 3 as, say, Artest or Bell? No, but he's better than John Salmons, Corey Maggette, Hedo Turkoglu and bunch of other flashy 3's that haven't done squat in the league.

Shooting: Luke is a decent shooter that, when playing with confidence and health, shoots a decent percentage. He can shoot from anywhere on the floor and he actually will post up a smaller player! That takes some skill in today's NBA.

Handles: Luke has mad handles, he had a below average year last year with mental gaffes and turnovers, but i think he'll be a lot better this year as a result of sucking it up last year."

LMAO!!! ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THE SAME LUKE WALTON? HE HAS MAD HANDLES.

OH MAN, I CAN'T STOP LAUGHING!

BILL WALTON IS THAT YOU?

AK,
"Not to drag myself into this nonsense, but your argument totally contradicts itself. You can't declare Shaq- despite his obvious decline- ahead of Bynum because Drew hasn't proved himself enough."

How? I'm measuring two players together. Not one.

If you say lets compare Shaq versus Bynum. Well Bynum might and that's a big might have the edge right now.

But I'm asking you Shaq/Lopez vs Bynum/Mihm or Mbenga

So I'm asking you to compare the two together.

And definitely you have to give the edge to Shaq/Lopez

Looking at what two will make the strongest impact next year. Bynum will make a impact but you can choose both him and Mihm as a better frontline right now, than Shaq/Lopez

Gunner,

Again, you discounted Bynum against Shaq because, according to you, Bynum hasn't "proven himself," but then graded Lopez- who has yet to play a minute of NBA ball- ahead of Mihm/Mbenga based entirely, in your words, on potential. That's a completely contradictory argument and it's obvious why. You literally didn't even explain anything Lopez brought to the table outside of potential, which you said doesn't work in Bynum's favor.

LOL.

AK to Gunner, F U.

The Nets got the better Lopez

Laker Tom....Set your idiot filter to a real high level..It should block most of them out...BTW....You cant go on vacation....Under 40 days to go

Ok AK,

Well let's break it down.

Bynum - Potential
Mihm - Benchwarmer who hasn't played much minutes in 2 years.

Versus

Shaq - Double Double player with years of play offs experience and 3 rings

Lopez - Potential

So you have the Lakers with one Potential player and severe question marks at backup, and the Suns with one experience player and a backup with potential

Now who has the better front court? you have to give the edge to the Suns

No, it's not an "F-U" thing. Nothing personal. I just was chiming in, because the logic seemed way off to me.

AK

Yeah Righ!

LakerPhatgurl,
"AK to Gunner, F U."

Still eating those burger, huh?

Well gezz AK..even you have a limit to how much bs one can take...lol and I thought u were the nuetral one! Haha

AK
"No, it's not an "F-U" thing. Nothing personal. I just was chiming in, because the logic seemed way off to me."

I THINK THE LOGIC WAS OFF BECAUSE LIKE ALL BLOGGERS THEY SEE NOTHING BUT THE STARTING POSITION AND NOT THE BACKUP. MY OPINION WAS BASED ON STARTER AND BACKUP AT THE #5 POSITION.

NOT JUST THE STARTERS AT THE #5 POSITION

Jon,

>>>>>It sucks and I wish the Kamenetsky Brothers would do more to curtail these idiots who

Not really. Just apply some simple and rational rules. Laker fans only. If somebody is not a Lakers fan and is repeatedly posting the same drivel just to annoy Lakers fans, then ban them. It’s really pretty simple. And I would bet that if they tested it for just one week, they would find the quality and number of valid posts would increase dramatically.

I have stated many times how much I like and respect Andy and Brian but taking the easy way out in the name of freedom of speech or however they want to categorize their decision is just not working. Remember what a relief it was when KL was banned? Well, get ready for blog hell as he has just been reinstated so that he can join in with Gunner, GWB, and BUTtLickER disrespecting anything and everything purple and gold. LOL!

I find it ironic that I had a post held up because of a one sentence comment about Sarah Palin’s support for abstinence in lieu of teaching kids about sex education and birth control while the blog trolls just get a free ride to crap on everybody’s parade. How much would you like to bet that we will soon see an entire thread populated by only trolls – nothing but BUTtLickER and GWB and Gunner and KL doing their thing! Talk about hijacking the blog!

AK/BK, how about running a one-week trial ban of all trolls? I bet you would find a lot of support for it and I also bet once you did it for a week, you would never go back to the current laissez faire attitude. Enough is enough. The trolls are ruining the blog for everybody who counts. If you don’t believe me, take a vote. It’s time to take a stand rather than deciding not to decide. The trolls bring zero benefit to the blog. All it takes to eliminate them is for you two to take a stand. The current situation is a joke. And the only ones laughing are Gunner, GWB, BUTtLickER, and now KL. Soon they will be the only ones here. That is the truth.

Well, if you want to break it down that way, fair enough, I guess. I think you're being exceedingly generous to Shaq, considering his own injury/conditioning issues and total decline on display last season. Or playing it tougher on Bynum's obviously superior play through January, depending on how you wanna look at it. But that second breakdown at least plays the "potential" card fairly.

AK

you know the news is thin when there are posts about the Lopez bros on here... zzzzzzzzz...

LakerTom

Lets be honest here..

I agree wholeheartedly about what your. Its all about participation. Ok..look at it this way. Someone like mw don't post very often fot the same reasons you explained..on the otherhand people like the trolls you mentioned seem to take the blog in a direction you may not seem fit..but yet and still the easiest thing to do is ignore them all together. AK/BK makes a thread about...say...the Olympic..then Mike T comes in and makes one comment about Kwame..and soon the whole blog sucks right into it..and Voila!!..we now have a Kwame discussion that goes on throughout the day and all night long all the while the easiest thing to do is just simply ignore the idiot and they go away. You can't say it dosnt work..cuz how would anyone here know? Theres always one..AND I MEAN ONE poster here that's going to go back and fourth with these troll that you so want banished. Don't blame AK/BK...(dont make them choose between blo participation and a few measly trolls..haha..even I know the answer to that) but blame your precious blogging brothers and sisters for giving life to something that could have been dead along time ago. love me some Lakers..just like you and everone else here who's a fan...but unfortunately all the highly educated well spoken idiot don't have the common since to simple IGNORE someone. Nah I suppose its easier to piss moan and cry about a few troll who who in human nature wud leave when there existence is ignoed completely!

Just my 2cents!

WILL YOU PLEASE STOP CRYING AND JUST JOIN IN? DAMN, YOU GUYS ARE WORST THAN KOBE LAST SUMMER. Talking about sensitivity - Please turn down te level a little bit

PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME THE DEFINITION OF A LAKER FAN? JUST BECAUSE I SUPPORT SUNS FRONT LINE AS A BETTER DUO THAN OUR FRONT LINE, THAT MEANS I'M NOT A LAKERS FAN.

LIKE I SAID AGAIN. QUIT CRYING SO MUCH AND JOIN IN ON A DEBATE. WE ALL DON'T HAVE TO BELIEVE IN YOUR OPINION TO BE A LAKERS FAN. GET REAL DUDE

Watch out Laker bloggers!

We have Gunner on board who is very knowledgeable person. He talks so much basketball sense that even so many NBA team GM's do not have! Out of all the teams, only one GM was the smartest and he was also a rookie who got his rings by ebing punched in the face by his own team mate. Those suns are going to rock the NBA this season and all their seats have been sold out in Arizona. There is not a single seat available becos Shaq and Lopez will tear the league with maybe 82 wins and a championship.

Let us all salute this Gunner for after all he is just a GUNNER who does not know what and where he is gunning.....

All Hail to Gunner!!!! He is the best forecaster!!!

Oh and excuse the typing errors...im on a cellphone haha

I second Laker Tom, we need change, they are ruining the blog.

As for weed, I'm sure my man Lamar has the best bud in town so that's a no brainer.

Lamar = Laker for Life

GO LAKERS

AK/BK,

thank you. no more schtick.

btw, i was wrong about kob. he did a nice job this year and won mvp honors fair and square. too bad in the finals though. maybe next year.

just to warn the blog, this version of KL will not be quite as combustible. don't even try and bait me.

gunner: thx buddy. glad to see you're still here fighting the fight.

mamba24: nice to see creator of the "beast" is still here.

LakerTom,

"Just apply some simple and rational rules. Laker fans only."

I'm not sure I agree. I think we're strong enough to have an occasional Hater come in here and challenge us.

It just becomes a problem when they post 20 times a day the same thing and each time insult the group aggressively.

GO LAKERS!

Thirty2 sez:

"The Nets got the better Lopez"

Brooke was piicked higher in the first round, but reports this summer have already begun to reveal that Robin in PHX is likely to be a more successful NBA playa.

From ESPN's top 50 rookies ranking by David Thorpe:

BROOKE LOPEZ

July 22, 2008
Showed some immaturity in Utah that I didn't see in Orlando; he played with a scowl and lacked bounce. He'll soon learn that without intensity and passion in his play, he's going to be a liability to his team.

July 10, 2008
On Day 3 in Orlando, he struggled to hold his positions inside due to his weak lower body.

July 08, 2008
Hustled up and down the floor, but struggled to make plays. Also had some difficulty sealing his opponent in the post, which he'll figure out eventually.:

ROBIN LOPEZ

July 15, 2008
Lopez looked better on offense than he did at Stanford, showing some nice finishing moves. He squared up nicely at the rim, hustled and showed he will bring energy -- dunks and blocks -- every chance he gets.

July 07, 2008
An agile and aggressive big, Lopez symbolizes the new Suns, who are now more focused on defending and rebounding. Good thing for Robin. If he continues to work on his offense, he could be the new Tim Duncan.

Sorry Gunner,

Bynum's Potential far outweighs Lopez's Potential, not even close. Lopez couldn't even outplay his brother in college!! As far as Shaq goes, his numbers may be decent some games, but his free throw shooting is still gawdaful. Look at the Suns record when Shaq plays more than 30 minutes in a game, they're like 5-10!! Bynum was a more productive player and more beneficial to his team than Shaq was last season. For all I care you can put Lopez with Mihm and Mbenga, in garbage time, but I'll put my money Mbenga to outplay Lopez come October.

AK,

yes me and hobbit are talking about Smush/McKie thing. Heck I didn't bring that topic up and I don't know why Hobbit did. I guess his point was about starting youngings like Smush over the percieved "proven" veterans like McKie. Though I don't want to talk much about it, McKie was in decline after his 2000-2001 season and there was a reason why the 76ers waived him. We thought he could fill in the role of Harper/Shaw but he never materialized ans Smush was and look what happened to Smush after his 2nd year?

Out of a job and a parking attendant wanting to grill him for him beating her up all because he didn't like to pay a fee..........

AK and Gunner, the rotation will look up to be Bynum and Pau rotating over and over. Yes there is concern should either of them go down. The Suns rotation will be I believe Shaq-Amare rotation rather than going down on Lopez instantly. Should Shaq or Amare get into injury only then Lopez can back then up and for all *potential* things rookies brings, how many teams *fear* Robin Lopez? Heck Andy Varajao scares me more than Robin will in the near future.
Suns made a decent move getting Robin Lopez, I don't count on Lopez making such a big impact as a rookie.

Gunner, you may be aware of the debate between me and hobbit but let me ask you this: What can Ariza do effectively as a starter? Watching the previous year games, he never really impressed me enough to say he's a quality starter. Over Radman and Walton, hell yeah. Over Odom? I haven't been very impressed with his defense, that is not a diss towards his defense which is solid just not the type to slow down Pierce, Lebron, or even Josh Smith. And on offense? Ariza lays even worst bricks from the perimeter worst than Odom has so far. Odom is no perimeter shooter but when healthy, Odom has shown some ability to shoot (37.5% in 05-06 as Small Forward). His only game so far has only been slashing and that can be sealed up quickly. Bench wise, I don't see us going beyond more than Sasha, Jordan, Radman, and maybe Powell at some stints.

Rocky,

It's an ongoing debate, feel free to either ignore or join in.

KL,
"gunner: thx buddy. glad to see you're still here fighting the fight."

ANYTIME BROTHER. GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK.

Yeah Kob performed well last year. I want to see him push his teammates more to play harder instead of playing soft.

That beatdown in game 6 just didn't settle right in my stomach.

gunner,

i'll be the first to admit, i was wrong about kobe. the guys did a good job (except in the finals) and kobe was a good teammate for most of the year.

there were times where the old kobe=new kobe, but all things considered, it was a good step for the lakers.

i can't believe the "F-U" schtick is till going on on this blog.

Blitz,
"Gunner, you may be aware of the debate between me and hobbit but let me ask you this: What can Ariza do effectively as a starter?"

You can't look at Ariza performance during the finals because i believe he wasn't 100%.

Look at his performance before the injury. He was way more agile and defensively he was alot quicker. I think Phil mess up Ariza head by benching him all through the conference finals and then throwing him in during the finals. I kept saying he should have given him some time to get his legs under him during the conference finals. But I believe PHil did that on purpose to try and justify why he was playing Puke so much minutes.

He was getting heat for why he didn't play Ariza in the conference finals. Now at this stage, I admit Lamar is a better player than Ariza and he seems to knock down shots better than Ariza when he shoots but I feel our biggest weaknesses are on the bench and we need to plug up the hole at the #3 and #4 position when our starters go to the bench in the second quarter. You can do that by bringing Vlad and Lamar off the bench because they can both interchange at the #3 and #4 position. Which ultimately gives us a much deeper bench than before.

So is Lamar better? Yes. But do we benefit more from him being a 6th man instead of a starter. I believe so.

We don't need Ariza to be a scorer to start. We just need him to be solid on defense as a starter. Sort of similar to what Rodman brought to Phil Jackson Bulls. They was just a defensive strength to the starting lineup.
