The Sun also rises?

August 7, 2008 | 10:32 pm

The Daily News is reporting that the Lakers have agreed to terms with really tall Chinese guard Sun Yue, last year's second-round pick.  Not a huge surprise, given that the team has expressed interest over the last few weeks in getting a deal done, but still some mighty intriguing news.  More to come as we learn it.  In the meantime, enjoy these clips of "The Best of Sun Yue," as opposed to messing around with "The Obscure B-Sides and Off Days of Sun Yue."

UPDATE (8:30 am): Here's the report from Elliot Teaford at the DN. Looks like a two-year deal, with everything getting ironed out in the next day or two if all goes well.  Fans, of course, can get a look at Sun during the Olympics, starting Sunday when the U.S. faces China.

Ya Vlade sucked on defense, and yes most of your analysis is correct. However we still played enough defense to win. You tend to forget what this team was buildt for. Dr. Buss wanted up tempo basketball and Mitch delivered. We averaged 109 points a game, but in 3 of the losses we scored 91, 92, and 88, still we were in 2 of them till the end. This is what LTLF is getting at. We failed to execute our offense, defense was enough. The reason we didnt make any large scale changes is Andrew shores up a lot of your points. With Pau at the PF Andrew will be able to roam the paint. As far as a defensive minded 3 we already have one of the best in Kobe. I look for him to see a lot of mintes at the 3 this year, Even in the finals with Bynum, Lamar would have been good enough to slow Pierce down a little, enough at least to win. lamars not Kobe but he is a much better defender then Vlade or Luke. The key to the whole thing will be health. If healthy we will be fine.

Wow! The Olympics opening ceremony was really impressive. With that said, how do you feel about America's invasion and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan with China's role with the Sudanese government?

human,
"but he's never talked about in the same discussions as the other all time greats..."

Yes he is, if you know anything about the players in the 60s and 70s.

Darren,

1. Afghanistan? All for it.

2. Iraq? Time for a phased withdrawl.

3. Darfur? It's genocide. The most demonic potential of humanity's dark side. China's hands are covered in blood.

GO USA!

GO LAKERS!

Darren,
Well, America freed Iraq and Afghanistan from two of the worst, most dictatorial governments in the world. China in Sudan, not so much.

exhelodrvr,

I do know the 60's and 70's, I'm just past mid-life crisis age....Rick's career was hard to pinpoint, because of playing in 2 leagues, and actually doing very well in both (I am not a fan of his because of his attitude), so his greatness is not questioned. He just always has that chip on his shoulder, but then again other players past and present do, but his just seems to bug me. In your opinion would he make...say one of the all time great teams, say 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team?...His son, Jon, who I loved as a Laker for his hustle and shooting (limited physical skills) also seems to have that anti-Laker syndrome as a tv analyst (which was referred to in either this or previous blogs). The other son, Brent, his career didn't pan out in
LA as a Clipper,...so maybe it all adds up to the anti-LA thing. What do you think drives it. Granted he and Brent are providing their opinions, but in Jon's case, he's supposed to be an analyst, which I believe should be unbiased. He may state his opinions, but he seems to make his points with an "agenda". Peace.

human,
Barry always speaks his mind; and his basketball analysis is usually pretty accurate. It is not unreasonable to think that the Lakers will not be the best team in the west this season, with Bynum still unproven, a lot of injury questions, Lamar Odom playing a new position, etc. Not my personal view, but certainly one that can be defended.

First bernie mac now isaac hayes???

damn, damn ,damn, damn

First of all, what the hell does rick ("shoot, shott, where's the ball?") know about defense. As a matter of fact, none of his kids played or plays any either!! So how does he become a proponent of defense? Ohhhhhh...I get it, he's trying to be coach material now...Funny how nobody in the NBA is buying his garbage, and neither am I.

Barry has been changing his philosophy daily on who should do what in the league. If lawrence frank, doug moe, johnny davis and whoa nellie can coach, why can't rick get a sniff?? Maybe he's just full of it and burned all his bridges with the league. He's always been selfish and now he's on the outs spewing dribble on today's popular players and teams.

I want the squad to get tougher on D also, but maybe rick can predict his chances of landing a coaching gig...even in the D-leage......ZERO! That's my prediction.

exhelodrvr,
I agree with you about Rick Barry's blunt honest opinions that he always states without hesitation. But didn't you get a sense of disdain from Jon Barry whenever he was being an analyst and making comments on the Lakers. After all, it was pretty much agreed as the playoffs progressed that the Lakers were a potential force. But Jon would just blow over them as if they did not exist. As an analyst, his job should be to critique, not to "hold a grudge", which he seemed to be doing. Like I said, I wished they had kept him for longer than one season. Peace, it isn't a good day, .....quote for the day..."Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today", from James Dean, the actor, who died very young. Basketball is a game, (for us), it's a career for the players...Have a good day and thanks for critiquing my views.

latopia,
people are sizing up Sun Yue....from the you-tube clips I have seen, he has a hunger to be a shot-blocker....in yesterdays game, he was not rattled by Kobe, instead of comparing him to Shaun Livingston, who I have never been a fan of, even though I live in LA and had seen him play many times, I did not see what people claim the "court vision"...Sun will be a role player for the Lakers, and with his athletic abilities, he may be hard for other teams to handle. I say stop comparing him to Livingston, I say he could be more of a Tayshaun Prince player for us, with better ball handling skills. There isn't much word in LA on Livingston, other than he's being outed, it's a shame, I hope he got enough on contract money to deal with "it", He was too young, and just too fragile. Sun Yue is already 217 lbs, & as a bench player for the Lakers, he will have plenty of time to work on the weights and his shooting.
