Mark your calendars

am
The Lakers' schedule for the 2008-09 season has been released. (Woo!) The purple and gold will open things up at home Oct. 28 against Portland -- an ESPN game, no less -- before hitting "the road" for a game the next night against the Clippers. That one will be on TNT. Those are just two of the 25 nationally televised games the Lakers will play this season.
Other highlights:
- The Shaq/Kobe Christmas has been replaced with the Paul Pierce/Kobe Christmas. Celtics vs. Lakers, in L.A. on Santa Day.
- A home heavy schedule in which 11 of their first 15 games are played at Staples.
- Nov. 10 marks the first visit for Shaq's Suns to L.A.
- Sunday, Dec. 28, vs. Golden State. "Say Hi to Ronny" Night!
- March will be a tough month. Five home games versus 10 on the road, including visits in Phoenix, Portland, Houston and San Antonio, along with potentially tough games in Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta and Charlotte (shouldn't be, but always is).
- The April schedule is reasonably friendly. Three roadies, two against Milwaukee and Sacramento. The Lakers finish the regular season with back-to-back home games against the Grizzlies and Jazz.
(UPDATE: ESPN did a "notable dates" rundown for the entire NBA, if you're interested)

Since we can't ban the Troll.
We've got to Starve the Troll.
LakerNation, as a collective group our discipline has been ABYSMAL. Just awful.
Pig/Rollo/Stranger in the Night/Everybody,
Guys, we've got to do a better job in Starving this Troll, because we aren't even feeding him, we're stuffing him. AK has made it clear that he's not going to ban him. So we have to take matters into our own hands.
Identify the Troll (check)
Wound the Troll (quadruple check)
Starve the Troll (hell no!)
We really need to keep at each other and remind fellow LakerNation citizens that Trolls only go away when they've got nothing left to eat.
It's our only reasonable course of action.
And it could take months, but it's the only thing that works.
Starve the Troll and we can return to a reasonable course of discussion.

Many of you here are excited about the up-coming season.
I, like Rick Fox (he of 3 championship rings) still burn over the lost in the finals (and especially against Boston!).
Like Rick Fox, I have questions about this team that has yet to be answered.
Are they truly committed to winning a championship?
Are they working out in the gym?
And-like Rick-my number one concern:
ARE THEY MENTALLY TOUGH?
Games 4 (a 24 point lead) and 6 (and 39 point blow-out) will forever stain my brain.
Yes, Kobe/Andrew/Sasha/Trevor/D-Fish are committed.
However:
Pau is mentally weak (and too thin to play the 4).
Lamar is mentally weak period.
Luke/Vladimir at a combined 60 million has to be the worst signings in Lakers (and probably NBA) history (especially when you throw in Lamar's 14 million this year).
I'm sorry, but this Lakers' team reminds me of Sacramention of the early 21st century and the Jazz who lost to the Bulls twice in the NBA Finals: talented but no heart.
And I don't care what any of you say about me:
The Lakers will never win a championship with 4 weak links (Pau/Lamar/Luke/Vladimir).
You are only as strong as your weakest link.
Kobe/Andrew/Sasha/Trevor/D-Fish can not over come the weak Pau/Lamar/Luke/Vladimir (and I have not mentioned Chris Mims playing with a re-built ankle).
If the Lakers want to prove me wrong, then do what the Celtics did last year:
Start the season 29-3.
To quote Doc Rivers:
To win the NBA championship we need to be a great defensive team, not a good defensive team (translation: when we have an off shooting night and score only 92, we should win: 92 to 88).
For the past 3 seasons, the Lakers have been inconsistent (win 3 on the road against Denver, Utah and San Antonio then come home and lose to Charlotte and Memphis).
The Lakers play 11 of their first 15 at home.
If they are serious about winning a championship (and regaining their self-respect after the embarassment against the Cs), I want a 11-0 home record and 3-1 road record.
Boston won their first 12 home games (which set the tone to a 29-3 start and a championship).
The Lakers need to do the same to change my thinking of this team as being pysically and mentally weak.
If they start the season off 5-0 and then go 3-2 against weak opponents (I don't know their schedule; I'm just typing an example off the top of my head), then I know they are not mentally strong (if having your heart snatched from your chest-and on national tv no less-by the hated Cs do not motivate you to play focus for the start of the season to set a tone, then I know for sure the Lakers are not mentally tough and will never win a ring).
Until the above happens: I am not convince this team will do anything except fold under pressure (like Utah did against the Bulls and Sacramento did against the 99-01 Lakers).
Don't believe the hype.
Peace.

You can only speculate.
We all know that Frankenstein and his the Whiniest player in history colluded to bring a title to Beantown. Just like the Pats cheated their way to titles, so have the Celtics. The Sox, well, they're always gonna be a bunch of losers, no matter how many titles they win.

SonnyB,
When you're talking about the 'class' of the NFL, it's all about the Chargers. We're on a mission this year. Super Bowl or bust. The city of San Diego is hungry for a championship. This is our year.
And I do not understand why people take the words of Rick Fox so seriously. This is a player who was not mentally tough. I can't remember how many times he choked in the clutch, but it was a lot. That is not mental toughness.
For him to be laying it so thick on the Lakers about mental toughness is about as hypocritical as it gets. He thinks he's all tough because he played Peja pretty good. Big deal! This is a guy who got beat up by Doug Christie.
And he's a choker. Who was in the game when it was winning time? It certainly wasn't Rick Fox, it was Robert Horry. Now Horry is mentally tough, not Rick Fox.
This Laker team is just getting started and I guarantee anyone that the Lakers will make him eat his words.
Go Lakers!

Let's go C's,
>>>Can someone tell me why Mr. I Can Get Off At Anytime
>>>is averagin 13 points per game
Let's see... the player who is taking the fourth most shots per
game is making the fourth most points for the team. Big
surprise there.
I'm absolutely positive if Kobe was taking the most shots for
Team USA, you'd be calling him a ball hog.
>>>averaging the lowest FG% for Team USA?
>>>Can someone say forcing shots?
50% shooting not good enough for you, huh?
For starters, it ain't the lowest... That would be Tayshaun
Prince at 45%.
And if you account for the fact that almost half of Kobe's
shots are 3-pointers, and the fact that he gets fouled a lot,
his effective shooting percentage is much higher, more
like 60%.
That as opposed to guys shooting poorly on 3-pointers
(e.g. Carmelo - 25%, Deron Williams - 16%, Prince - 25%)
or guys shooting poorly on free throws (LeBron 55%,
Dwight Howard 33%, Deron Williams 50%). In both of those
cases, those guys effective shooting percentage will be
lower.
But it's all good. When only one person on your team is
shooting below 50% you can't complain.
By the way, your hero Paul Pierce only managed to shoot
44% in the finals last season. So if you're wondering why
he's not on the Olympic team, that's why. Oh yeah, and
the fact that he led the team to a 6th place finish.

My how good you are about ignoring reality.
Like the reality that the crowd in BOSTON season before last

in the NBA last season, and in every game played in China
so far.
So you know, there are a few boozy bean-eaters in Boston
who think Paul Pierce is the best in the world, but in the
concensus of world opinion, it ain't even close... Kobe is
the man.

Let's be reasonable. They'll only average 100 points per game
over that stretch...
so they'll average 140 ppg over another stretch to make it average
out. It's just simple math. :-)

No. The way to banish all Trolls is to win the Championship. We have extremely little (and some could reasonably argue absolutely no) role in that.
Until then it is healthy to engage in a Troll management program of harm minimization by not provoking Trolls to distract us from our present course of discussion.

Posted by: Edwin Gueco | August 06, 2008 at 03:50 PM
Hey, I didn't know that Nick Fazekas was a free agent.
THAT is who the Lakers should sign for the deep backup
PF position.
The guy averaged 20 & 10 his last two years in college and
20 and 9 as a freshman. He didn't play a lot of minutes for Dallas,
playing behind Dirk Nowitzki, but he did get 11 minutes a
game for the Clips and had a PER of 19.65.
For a roster that has some injury question marks wrt two of
their 5 front court players, adding a 6'11" guy who can score
a little and rebound well coming off the bench, he'd be a
pretty good gamble. His per-48 rebound number (15.9) is
better than anyone but Bynum (16.9) on the Lakers. He's
way better than Ronny (10.1) was in that respect.
