Kupchak watches Drew with his own eyes
Not content to rely on a game of telephone for his info, Mitch Kupchak hopped a flight to Atlanta for a closer look at Andrew Bynum's workout regimen, which includes running, weights and roundball drills. The bird's-eye view has left the Lakers GM with no worries over Bynum's readiness come camp's opening or lingering problems from the surgery needed to smooth out rough spots from the knee dislocation. Instead, Kupchak is talking up Bynum at 100% strength when the preseason officially kicks off, citing visible improvements in areas such as conditioning, mobility and the kid's body in general. Obviously, we'll know nada for certain until he's on the court in October, but it's certainly a positive report, one in line with previous ones of a full recovery expected.
Also, Eric Pincus of Hoopsworld has been a busy beaver, cranking out two Laker-centric pieces. In his rundown of the P&G roster, Pincus relays the Miami Herald's info on free agent DJ Mbenga's status (The Heat might make a slightly bigger offer than the vet minimum deal apparently on the table from L.A.) and Josh Powell's two-year contract, which Pincus heard is either partially or non-guaranteed. I figured it was fully guaranteed, so that's a bit of a surprise to me. He also doesn't think the Lakers will pursue Clipper free agents Shaun Livingston or Quinton Ross, which in no way surprises me.
His other piece offers his take in a "Who's better: Kobe or LeBron?" debate, a topic otherwise shamefully neglected by the media. Pincus takes the Mamba's side, fellow Hoopsworlder Travis Health the King's.

Andrew Olowokandi is going to have a great season.
13 ppg and 9.9 rpg enroute to a Laker 7 seed and first round knockout by the New Orleans Hornets.
If yoos are lucky, he'll play 25 games.

Who's better: Lebron or Kobe?
Dumb question.
Faker fans will drool over Kobe's individual abilities.
Basketball fans will drool over Lebron's ability to dominate individually AND bring the team together.
Easy answer: Lebron by a mile.

LGC's
Didn't Boston draft Gerald Green with their first round pick a few years ago. Is he even in the NBA anymore? Talk about a selfish player. All flash, no class.
And have fun with over weight baby Shaq. Sad thing is, old, has-been shaq is still better than your baby.
Oh yea, and Rondo really showed us how good of a shooter is these finals. He couldn't hit a 15 footer to save his life.
My point: Can't call Drew a flop cause I'm pretty sure the last Celtic draft pick to pan out was PP, and he's close to retirement, thats a lot of worthless draft picks in between. Have fun watching Drew DOMINATE the NBA for the next 10 years.

why is there a cavs fan on the lakers blog?

Thanks guys for the AB update.
This is the best news a Laker Fan can ask for. Sure we all get excited about trade rumors but from a Laker standpoint AB is the KEY to winning it all. As we all saw from the Boston series it sure does suck not to have an inside presence down low in the box. This and only this is the reason why the Lakers didn't win it all.
Let's be clear....we don't need a big trade.. All we need is Andrew to be the BEAST he is down low.
I see no reason why this team can't win it all if AB is healthy and playing like he can. I will not forget his last 3 games before he got hurt. I saw GREATNESS in those 3 games. What a shame right before he was starting to dominate the injury cut him down. If he stays healthy the Lakers have something special.

great news! well done Bynum...
hey lets go C's -he brought the team together so well they had the 4th seed in the east and started losing games at the end of the season...unlike the lakers who made a late push for the TOP seed in the tougher west and made the finals...and oh Kobe wont the MVP which is clearly not an award for individual talent
brilliant logic as always - dont you ever get bored of yourself?...probably not a?
no prizes for guessing what the 'C' stand for mate and it aint celtics....

Hey lets go C's did you see Scoop Jacksons article saying the USA gold medal has an asterix beside it becasue Ginobli then caulderon sat out?
well I guess we could say the same thing about the celtics title - without Bynum and Ariza...
Better luck next year maybe you can win one legitimately...but do you hear lakers fans saying we would have won had we been at full strength...no we generously let you believe in your title while confidently looking towards next season.
why? Because lakers fans have class...I know you are only here to try to learn from us and we appreciate the sentiment....but your not doing a very good job.

Great post, BD! You have to wonder how any Lakers fan who watched Drew play could NOT see the greatness in his game. It doesn’t take a basketball genius or visionary to see what was obvious. After Howard shoddy showing in the Olympics, Drew is ready to move on and become the best young center in the NBA next year. He probably won’t win the All-Star game vote until Yao retires, but he will for sure be the first pick by coaches to add to the team.

Mr. Barney,
The C's draft picks landed KG and Ray Allen.
Oh, not to mention an NBA title last season OVER YOUR LOS ANGELES FAKERS.
Oh wait, didn't the C's draft Paul Pierce? Pierce only won the Finals MVP honors.
Those terrible Celtics.
ahahahaahahah
Oh yeah, Lakers didn't even draft Mr. Selfish himself. Charlette drafted the Starlet.
Big baby is much better than the other big baby (Shack).
Oh yeah, what is up with Faker fans turning on each other? All I hear on this blog is how "Shack sucks" or "Shack's out of shape". Your "big baby" was the last guy to lead your loser team to the finals.

{From CBS Sports}
"The Big Goofball doesn't seem so funny right now.
Shaquille O'Neal is 7 feet, 325 pounds of Teflon. He's untouchable. Impermeable. Truth is, I'm writing these words as fast as possible because at any second my computer could explode rather than be complicit in a critical column about O'Neal.
See, the machines probably are in on this conspiracy as well.
Lord knows enough people are.
O'Neal can do no wrong. Even when he does wrong. Over the years he has been a Hollywood scab, a racist, a cheap-shot artist and a whiny little baby. In recent months he has picked up steam, rapping like a moron about Kobe Bryant and being the subject of a restraining order after allegedly threatening to have a woman killed.
Read those last few words again.
... allegedly threatening to have a woman killed.
That's The Big Aristotle, your lovable Shaq-Fu. Kazaam. That's him.
Allegedly.
And I know you. You're going to cling to the word "allegedly" like a baby clings to its bottle, not because you believe in innocent-until-proven-guilty, but because you believe in Shaquille O'Neal. And I get why.
While other athletes were getting busted for DUI or domestic violence or even more vile bits of violence, O'Neal stayed above the fray. He wasn't on the crime blotter like Michael Vick or Brett Myers. He wasn't starting little Shaquille franchises all over the place like Shawn Kemp or Travis Henry. He was funny and approachable in his uniquely glowering, lumbering, enormous way. He was safe.
Only now, he seems a little dangerous.
O'Neal is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 4 in Atlanta, where a judge issued a restraining order against him last week after Georgia rapper Maryjane said he threatened her when she broke up with him earlier this summer.
Maryjane also is scheduled to appear Sept. 4. To get the restraining order, she filed court documents that reportedly accused O'Neal of breathing heavily over the phone, of threatening to blackball her career by paying off any musician tempted to work with her, of sending her "an unsolicited vulgar and offensive illustration of a man physically restraining a woman while forcing her to engage in sexual intercourse with him."
Maryjane's court filings also detail one piece of potentially damaging evidence, an electronic message she says came from O'Neal that said the following:
"I dnt no who the (expletive) u think u dealin wit u will neva be heard from one phone call is I gotta make now try me. Sho me."
If you don't understand idiot electro-speak, let me translate the key part:
You will never be heard from ... one phone call is all I have to make. Try me.
If that's true, that's bad. That's awful.
If it's true.
I'm not saying I believe it, not yet anyway. But I'm sure you don't. That's my point. Shaquille O'Neal has been accused of threatening to have a former lover eliminated, in addition to the rape imagery of that alleged "illustration," yet he remains untouchable. Impermeable. It's like Shaq Diesel always has a fresh coat of wax. Nothing sticks.
You've always seen the best in Shaq, even when he showed his ugly side, like when he pulled out the Asian-American version of blackface by saying the following about NBA rookie Yao Ming in 2002: "You tell Yao Ming, 'Ching chong yang, wah, ah so.'" Or when he clubbed Brad Miller in the back. Or when he crossed a 2000 Screen Actors Guild picket line to act in a commercial. Or when Kobe Bryant accused O'Neal of paying off former lovers to make them go away. Or when Shaq called Steve Nash's two MVP awards "tainted," or when Shaq wrote in his book that, "If you get dunked on by a white boy, you got to come home to your friends and hear it."
All of that was explained away by Shaq, by you, by friends in the media. The Yao Ming stuff was a joke, and when did we get so sensitive? Miller had it coming to him. Nobody cares about Hollywood. Kobe's a liar. Everyone knows white men can't jump. And as for the "tainted" comment, well, that's just Shaq being delightfully blunt.
People mostly laughed earlier this summer when O'Neal tore into Kobe while rapping at a New York nightclub, mocking Bryant for being unable to win the 2008 NBA Finals and reminding him that he is ring-less without Shaq: "Kobe, tell me how my ass taste."
Through it all, we love Shaq. Or at least, you do. Me, I'm not so sure anymore. Me, I'm waiting for that Sept. 4 court date, and for whatever comes next in the legal system.
If an Atlanta rapper named Maryjane can prove O'Neal sent her an electronic message saying "u will neva be heard from" and "one phone call is (all) I gotta make," Shaq won't be Shaq to me. He'll be The Big Homicidal."
Hmmmm....
I think if I was a tiny little girl like Maryjane is (I've seen photos, she's hot) and Shaquille O'Neal sent me photos of a woman being raped, it would probably really freak me out.
Is Shaq on drugs or something? Didn't he used to want to be a sheriff? What the hell is going on?
The author of this article makes some good points.
Shaq's not only threatening to kill some girl who dumped him, but he's stupid enough to do it via text so she has a legally admissable record of it.
Wow.
Shaq should retire now. This is going to get UGLY.
No way the Suns are making the playoffs next year. No way. The Big MIstake is in meltdown mode.

Didn't Shaq learn about the dangers of committing a crime via text message? Didn't he listen when he was in the academy, or little boot-camp, or whatever it was he took?
Even threatening to kill her career is still pretty bad. It also makes that Sheriff look good for dropping his butt, doesn't it?
Shaq is lucky he isn't facing jail time right now.

It's good to see Kupchak doing his due diligence. Or really, it'd be extremely bad if he didn't go see what 'drew was up to and do his due diligence.
All pieces of good news related to Drew make me feel better, but it doesn't matter much until the regular season and even then it only matters if he can stay healthy through the end of the playoffs.
Jon K.,
Nice little post there on Shaq. I think perhaps Shaq's ego just eclipsed his body which as well all know is not something that happens easily.
Shaq may be correct that Nash's MVPs were tainted. He obviously didn't say it very nicely. Of course his dissing of Eric Dampier and many former teammates and (the people I simply don't know about) kind of fits it into a pattern.
Shaq might also be correct in saying if you get dunked on by a white guy, you get a hard time from friends and family. That's a statement about racism in basketball, though Shaq's inclination to tell people about it suggests perhaps he feels the same way.
Since Shaq left the Lakers while I still appreciated his efforts on our behalf, I no longer felt the need to stick up for him. The rosey glasses were removed. I've found him consistently unfunny and self-absorbed.
He has given us gems like:
The Queens (great b/c they were a flopper and a bunch of whiners are the time)
"One good shot deserves another" (perfect description)
"When Kobe comes at me it's going to be like a Corvette running into a brick wall"
which Kobe thought made sense, he just changed Corvette to Lamborghini.
While there are a few things I appreciate about Shaq like the 3 titles he was instrumental in helping us get, like his observant one-liners, and his incredible physical talent, at this point it seems clear that he's the awkward, reluctant has-been in the twilight of his career. It's really too bad.

The Case for Kobe
Eric Pincus
Is there really a wrong answer? Both Kobe Bryant and LeBron James are tremendous basketball players. They're of the elite few who will be in the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) discussion - a credit to what they've both accomplished at such young ages. Because they're at different stages of their respective careers, it's difficult to objectively pick one over the other. For now, the scales tip Bryant's way with three rings in five NBA Finals appearances.
(may I add that his argument for Kobe was a slight bit shorter..but by saying "The scales tips Bryants way" I guess is his way of choosing Kobe slightly over lebron)
Comparing two incredible players in the middle of their careers is like writing a book review before the writer finishes the novel. A player like Michael Jordan has long since retired and is a known commodity. It's easy to remember his many accomplishments (six rings speak volumes) which far overshadow his flaws and failures.
Bryant and James aren't afforded that luxury. They're elevated by every success and diminished by every failure. LeBron took his Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA Finals only to be swept out unceremoniously by the San Antonio Spurs. Bryant's Los Angeles Lakers took the Boston Celtics to six games but were embarrassed in the closer - leading some to declare definitively Bryant is no Jordan.
No, he's not, but just being Kobe Bryant may one day prove to be something on par or even greater. Bryant has the three rings but gets less credit than perhaps he should after playing second fiddle to center Shaquille O'Neal. In the court of public opinion, Bryant needs to win at least one (if not three) rings post-Shaq to be considered in the same breath as Jordan.
Equally, LeBron is behind Kobe because of Bryant's championship pedigree. James is both an incredible individual talent and a willing team player, but until he wins a title, he's a cut below. That may not be fair since basketball is a team game - and even the best individuals may retire ring-less - but that's the standard.
James raw strength and physicality enables him to overpower opponents in ways Bryant will never master. LeBron has improved a lot as a defender. Playing under Coach Mike Brown has helped James overcome what was once perceived as a major weakness. He's also improved as a clutch scorer - another flaw from earlier in his career.
Bryant remains the better defender, with a history of shutting down players like Allen Iverson and Tracy McGrady. He's also the more established end-game player, the greater closer (although that's an area James may be catching up on as well).
Watching the Olympics, Kobe's efforts defensively (at times at the cost of his own offense) set the tone for Team USA throughout the entire tournament. While the group lost focus defensively in the gold medal game against the Spanish team (spurred on by foul trouble), Bryant was the star of stars. When the team looked must vulnerable, Bryant led the way to gold while his teammates (including LeBron) deferred.
Both James and Bryant are special players. Looking back at the end of their journeys will provide a more accurate comparison but even then the debate may rage for decades to come.
(but yet he compared them anyway..atleast till it was time to pitch his claim for Kobe. This topic has been beaten to death yes I know..but it seemd the only way Kobe get the edge is by playing the "He's older and a more accomplished player than Lebon..but Lebron will surpass Kobe when the time comes..so for now ill go with Kobe" card!! LAME!!!!!
Question??...How could someone with such an enourmous resume' and accomplishments be given such a short explaination on why he a better player than a 5yr player with 1..count'em (1) Finals appearance. Amazing)

I loved Elvis. He was my very first musical hero back in grade school. And my first date in 6th grade was with Sally to see a new Elvis movie. I was not old enough to see fans swoon over Sinatra but Elvis and the Beatles were phenoms you had to see to believe. I mean girls literally fainting when they came on stage.
As for downers, they never appealed to me. I prefer to be up all of the time. Who needs to sleep? However, if I were stuck in Cleveland, I would probably have a different attitude. Fortunately, I live in the most beautiful county in the world – Marin County.

Seriously, if it is not a lot of trouble, I would love to have Bio-Chrono reading for myself. What information do you need? You can email the Kbros and they will forward it to me. Some of your former readings seemed to be right on once you exclude the vague Oracle-like generalities that would apply in any situation. Would be fun to see what your reading said about me. Thanks.
